You are drawing near to something that marks the end of a journey or an era. You may have many accomplishments that have lined your path, but there is a strange emptiness that fills you when you look backwards upon it, as if you have all the pieces but they are not coming together. What is missing? Do you feel connected to what you're doing? Do you feel connected to others? What alienates you from feeling complete? From feeling whole?

Can I hear more about Maddox? What's his backstory like? Where does he fall on the timeline?
(if I'm sending too many asks, do forgive me!)
You’ve unleashed something in me and now I can’t shut up
To start us off, here’s my boy! This is his original character-defining spread in my sketchbook from early last year:
Here’s some more art of him, as a colour reference! And what’s this? MORE banger art of my boy????
And here’s a meme too!
Aside from this older character development challenge google doc providing a lot of his original foundations (including his original character submission sheet!), allow me. To expand on. The Lore.
I don’t think I can shut up greatly so I hope you’re ready for a big ol read under the cut!
So. Maddox is a rebel spy before and during the Rebel alliance in the Galaxy Far Far Away. Standard stuff for a 24-year-old right? WRONG
He’s actually an Australian, a Sunshine Coast local, from OUR earth in early 2023, swept up into something that took him back in time and far off into space (of course, a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away) to have adventures and stuff like that. Adventures and all are just it, right?
WRONG.
AMNESIA BLAST UPON THIS BOY. GET DUNKED ON.
Joking aside, to quote the backstory portion in his original RP submission form, and even the addition directly from the document:
Maddox genuinely has no clue how he got here.
As in, how in sweet Force he ended up a long, long time ago, in a galaxy far far away from his own. His retrograde amnesia from a recent-ish rebel spy mission (involving hijacking and detonating an Imperial ship before escaping) has receded away enough for him to remember his life on his home country of Australia on Earth (and a rough knowledge of OT canon and even rougher knowledge of PT canon from that time), but a lot of things are still fuzzy.
He’s grateful he can remember quite a lot, including: his name and age, his past life and home, muscle-memory for espionage, how to catch on to flying several starships if given enough time, and even some previous missions. But whatever his amnesia is hiding from him, he hopes that the Force can help reveal it again… and maybe help him find a way back home. In the meantime, his goals for this galaxy are to continue his sick espionage job, find a way home, make some close friends and maybe, hopefully, call the Emperor a bitch to his face before he carks it during the events of ROTJ. Not all in that order specifically, but he’ll work on that.
Maddox specifically landed in the year 9BBY, roughly before the events of Kenobi were about to happen. He was picked up by and later joined Bail Organa’s Rebel Cell, as the Alliance wouldn’t have existed yet.
His fateful mission, subsequent amnesia and initial recovery occur at the tailend of Kenobi, leading him to re-meet a young Leia Organa when recovered by Bail’s rebels. Leia sneaks in a word to her dad, and Maddox is sent away for a week or two for some ‘minding’ with help of the Force. He later recalls the word ‘therapy’ to better describe his situation and tells the therapist there (who is also initially annoyed about this whole situation happening) that ‘minding’ is a stupid term and the galaxy should really get behind ‘therapy.’
(He won’t know this till later, but his therapist Ben also gained hope and healing through it too.)
Due to Force *~shenanigans~* and the still unremembered way as to how he came to the GFFA time from 2023 on earth, Maddox doesn’t really have a way back home and is physically stuck aging at 24 years old. And despite obviously being from Earth and thus having no midichlorians of his own, he is Force-sensitive after having an encounter with it while in spy training. That being said, he has a unique relationship with it where he can feel it more ‘talking’ to him than not, and is able to use it with study, self-teaching and meditation. However, he will NOT take a kyber crystal of his own. He may be a light-sider, but he doesn’t feel he deserves the title of Jedi.
We’ll get back to that in a bit.
His amnesia is (of kriffing course) courtesy of the Empire, under a top-secret, but now defunct and destroyed experiment called Project Lethe. This experiment had been self-contained in the star destroyer Calledania, but when a Rebel spy mission to break its secrecy had gone awry, Maddox had enough time to help set charges to blow it up before his capture and subsequent retrograde memory wipe.
You can imagine the horror he’d be going through, waking up after falling out of a bacta tank and coughing it out of his lungs, knowing NOTHING about himself or what’s going on. Then only arming himself with a scalpel and maybe a doctor’s medical ID before running out onto the main bridge to see that he’s in space (he really shouldn’t be), everything is chaos and falling apart (is he in a spaceship?) and he’s certainly feeling everything falling into a nearby planet’s orbit (these stars are NOT his own).
Of course, he managed to escape and started to recover his memory with the Force, but you’d have to ask him for the fuller story. And that’s if you can convince him to tell you all the details.
In terms of timeline and character relations, aside from entering and joining the early stages of rebellion prior to Kenobi’s events in 9BBY, he’s become a cool older ‘cousin’ friend of a sort with Princess Leia, especially since she was the one who knew his later-therapist Ben (Maddox nicholasnames him ‘Benny’) first. Bail has also been a mentor figure for Maddox before and after his amnesia - in terms of the growing rebellion, high-class etiquette and manners (which mostly consist of keeping an eye on Leia at fancy guest parties and learning from her). Not to say there’s no personal platonic fondness between them, it’s just that the professionalism has been more important for Maddox to get a grasp on his new life.
He’s also grateful for meeting and befriending friendlier folks in the GFFA, such as freeman Clone Troopers Juggernaut and Jorts (OCs in the first RP server I ever entered him into), and in 7BBY, @moobrvoobl-moobmoob-oobmpoobroom’s Clone OC Strike and co-created OC Pins, a stormtrooper who ditched the Empire when the two rebels had their cell missions cross paths and escaped together after going after an asset. Maddox has quickly grown to befriend and fall in platonic love with Strike and Pins, the former particularly since she causes/caused flares in his memory of his mum.
Especially since, in his old earthen life, he was an Eshay, and a horrible person to his mother and sister.
Did I mention he’s a regretful older brother? And a regretful son?
For leaving his family behind? For not being the person he should’ve been? For being selfish and into stupid stuff when there are things in life worth more than stupid ‘friends and stupidity?
Good god he’s ashamed to admit it. But he has to admit it somehow.
It was the second memory recovery in the Force that he recalled how he used to be, getting so depressed he needed that therapy from Benny.
Okay here's a couple rapid-fire points about Maddox bc I don't have all the brainspace for backstories:
In the flight back to the base after his couple-weeks therapy from Benny, Maddox had a dream about talking to some fella named Anakin, infodumping to him about the fauna and flora of Australia the entire time. Anakin was in awe of earth's natural flora and flora.
Maddox didn't put two and two together on that 'Anakin' guy until after waking up. His memory got intact enough to connect those dots.
(He won't do the same for Benny for a long, long time).
His enamel pin is actually his sister's, and it's another Peter Pan reference with the star and text saying 'straight on till morning'. (I really hope I can defictionalise it into a real pin one day!)
The leather bag he carries was borrowed by his sister for some time before he took it with him to the GFFA, so he's got more of her belongings with him rather than his own.
He modded an iPod over quarantine days into having a new battery and 256GB SSD drive to fill with his own music, but of course - his sister got to it when he wasn't looking and filled it up with her own tastes before he could wipe it clear.
So now he has his sister's tastes in music, for the most part. Which is a good thing.
So as for Maddox right now in my personal timeline? Well, I just have fun tossing him in the years between 9BBY-4ABY, putting him in Situations and Events (mainly RPs) to see how he develops and how far his character goes. There's a couple alternate timelines and AUs he's in, including the Chrumblr RP in the big discord.
And that's not even getting into the stuff his sister gets into in AUs and timelines.

let's talk about mackenzie/claire's camp, shall we?
it's a small one, somewhere in the savage divide, near one of the small bodies of water that occur in the area.
for christmas mackenzie is stringing up decorations and finding a makeshift tree somewhere - ( even if she has to scavenge for days ) and she's got the genny's up and running to power christmas lights.
mackenzie might not know many plans, but she will absolutely craft a few plushies for claire for christmas, especially the pink and blue brahmin ones. they go on the foot of claire's bed.
they searched for days to find the right camp, ended up having to deal with blood eagles on one spot, honey beasts in another - eventually in the mountains, overlooking a cliff, they find a small pond that is free of any enemies.
their muscles are sore by the time they use junk to create a makeshift shelter, but by god, it's better than sleeping outside in the rain.
their aesthetics are very different - mackenzie likes flowers and claire is more of a rough and tumble type with the amount of arms she's gathered from enemies or looted from camps, but it's home, and it's wonderful.

i think we dont talk about the crimson isles enough, they really managed to make that place feel so alive with the little societies they sat up and the problems they gave them
like. the piglins are just normal pigs, they're given the ability to communicate via spoken language and other things like being bipedal and all that by the sulfur. if they dont eat it daily they just.. revert back to being normal pigs. they aren't really piglins at all, but that's how they've built their lives so that's what they wanna be. and then chief scorn taxes the sulfur to death to the point that no one can afford it, and when you can't afford it that's it for you. unless you can get ahold of more somehow, you're back to being a mindless pig regardless of any life you had before (work, kids, etc)
the mages were just human, but gain magic ability through the sulfur. they've shown that eating too much of it can make you go kinda insane (the mage outlaw), but other than that it just makes them show higher intelligence. before the sulfur they were just your average farming society. when the volcanoes erupted, they lost everything. so they're constantly low on food, but they can keep up their great academic pursuits in the meantime. interestingly tho, some people cant use any magic, like maddox and aatrox
idk where im going with this, there's just a lot of neat stuff here. both of their societies are really deeply involved in sulfur, but if they go even a single day without it, everything they've worked centuries for crumbles. they'll either lose their sense of self or starve. so many little details here and there aaaaa
#i wanna talk about more little lore details but nothing is coming to mind rn#there's just other random things like the fact that magma cubes are banned in dragontail. the magma boss keeps growing endlessly#and it has to be cut weekly#the piglins see the lava fish as sacred and believe that's where their souls go when they die. they leave their bodies in the volcano#the mages (possibly maddox specifically) casually invented cellphones fkjhd#the bladesoul having previously been the prince of the fortress (who is the king) but#literally no one inhabits the place. except possibly elle. and a bunch of wither skeletons n stuff. just random mobs#chat#sb#not tagging as lore just bc i've talked about all of this in separate posts#but wanted to compile it into one bc i wanna Chat rn

tell me about your s/i now or im sending more doorkeay posts to our server
Hey now I’m just a little guy on my birthday you wouldnt send doorkeay to a little guy on his birthday would you?
I will be using this ask as an excuse to infodump tho I hope you know that, so for the sake of not having a giant wall of text I’m gonna put this under a cut
So, This is Maddox Gold (all pronouns), archival assistant at The Magnus Institute, avatar of The Spiral. (I feel a little weird using a real person face claim but this old edit I made is the only image I have of her 😭 I’m planning to commission real art at some point when I have more money)
Ok, so I should should probably start at the beginning for things to make sense so, quick backstory before The Magnus Instute recap.
Once upon a time Maddox was a normal(-ish) guy. Xe starts collecting vintage technology as a young adult. Which leads to him eventually coming across and purchasing an old radio in an antique store. Unfortunately for cer, the radio is an artefact of the spiral. (Not revealing a ton here yet, because I plan to write a statement fic about this one day) This radio is Maddox’s first true undeniable interaction with the fears.
It spends the next several years slowly delving deeper into the world of the dead powers, and starting to become part of this eirself as a developing avatar of The Spiral.
By the time The Great Twisting comes around, Maddox is in deep enough to be there. But it goes wrong. And as Sannikov Land is swallowed back into non-existence, like so many of the other spiral avatars there, he’s torn out of reality as well.
That is until 2016, when Maddox manages to find xer way back to reality. The radio (now residing in artefact storage at the magnus institute through an unknown* chain of events) acting as an anchor of sorts to pull him back.
Unfortunately though, it turns out when you literally haven’t existed for years, and most records and memories of you have vanished because of said non-existence, it’s very hard to just go back to a normal life. Ei ends up convincing Elias to give her a job at The Magnus Institute (unknown to Maddox, the reason being that at this point ((mid-season 1)) Jon has not received a mark from The Spiral yet, and now a spiral avatar has conveniently dropped into Elias’s lap)
And that’s how Maddox came to work at the magnus institute and wow that’s a lot of text oops, I guess this post is going to be just backstory now

abby, having been around magic much of her long life, is surprised by very little these days. she is the 'grumpy old man' trope through and through, further exacerbated by the presence of dmitri and veronica. with the former being virtually magicless and the latter just coming into her powers, she feels like she's almost parenting them in their supernatural journeys (or lack thereof in dmitri's case). veronica's main source of magic is her sight, allowing her to see others' past / present / (some) future through touch, and generally being able to see the auras and any true forms of those around her. this has caused her to see many things she shouldn't have, including the true forms of both julian and eleira. dmitri, though proficient in sleight of hand and street magicianry, has no real magic to speak of, and it frustrates him greatly. after catching abby and veronica practicing magic once, he has been nonstop on them to teach him ever since. veronica is willing, but abigail is strongly against it -- it seems there's something she knows but won't share...

Honestly all of this. I was going to put this in the tags but its too long. But yeah, all of this. Along with the addition that aside from Minaeve, the only people we see who actually care about the tranquil or any specific tranquil are: Samson with Maddox and Harritt with Helisma, both of which are easily missed.
(Gonna shove this under a cut cause it's a long post already.)
You only know of Maddox and Samson's relationship if you read the short story or side with the mages and even then it is brief and not fully explored even after you capture Samson. I feel like even in his ambient dialogue with Dagna, this really could have been explored and discussed more. Especially with Dagna's unique relationship and perspective of circles. How often had she seen a Templar and Tranquil in a positive relationship? The motivation and inspiration Maddox had to work with red lyrium? Because red lyrium doesn't care who you are, that stuff talks. It infects. How did Maddox avoid its influence? Dagana would inadvertently pry into their relationship to answer questions about the construction of Samson's armor. This would also presumably happen while Harritt was around which would dove tail into some interesting conversations between him and Samson on the topic of tranquil because of Harritt's past and present relationship with Helisma.
Harritt and Helisma's entire relationship is dependent on you catching the conversation with the runners. Harritt knew Helisma before she was turned tranquil and he is trying very hard not only to maintain some sort of relationship but also do right by honoring her current self. You see Helisma handling his attempt at continued friendship with slight confusion but she doesn't dissuade his attention. Harritt, he's struggling with the memory of who she used to be and the type of relationship they had before (it doesn't read at all as romantic to me to be clear) but he's also working to come to terms with who she is now and isn't trying to force her in anyway to maintain, return, or accept his desire for a friendship. He still cares for her and is struggling to show her that while respecting the new boundaries.
This would have been reason enough for Harritt to ask a dying, imprisoned man like Samson how to maintain and have a good relationship with a tranquil. One that wasn't disrespectful to the tranquil. Because Samson did respect Maddox, he valued Maddox as a person. This would have also been an interesting time to talk about the reversal of the rite of tranquility, one that is common knowledge to mages, templars, and anyone who knows a mage. We could have seen what that meant to Maddox, what it might mean for Helisma, what it would mean for Harritt and the likely very painful conversation for him.
The subject of tranquility, the horror and crime it is to the mages it is forced on, the incredibly fragile hope that is the reversal of tranquility is all under explored. To the detriment of the world building honestly, and I really wish such a heavy and relevant conversation could be had with your companions. That other ambient npcs that it mattered to could have this conversation even if you didn't. That your stance on it actually mattered. I also wish you could have a conversation on how some "well meaning" mages think the reversal should be forced on tranquil because "they can't make decisions for themselves". Which is a whole level of fucked that gets glossed over in the game because it's regulated to ambient dialogue.
I wish that tranquility wasn't such a tucked away but slipped in topic in the games. That Inquisition used the "Look at this pretty world with its dark undercurrents" more than it actually does.
like i just. i just need to lay this out. becuz i need to go to bed but i will not be able to stop thinking about this otherwise. okay. so
the tranquil we see in inquisition
Avexis. who was a major player in the events of dawn of the seeker. helped save the day alongside casssandra. was honored by the divine. she's tranquil now. she's minaeve's assistant and we see her around haven but we can't speak to her
overheard dialogue between her and giselle reveals that she has been so horribly abused while tranquil that she wouldn't chose to be cured becuz she doesn't think she could handle dealing with her trauma with all her emotions intact
cassandra, who knew avexis, who tells you the story of saving the divine and mourns how she is celebrated while the mages were forgotton, has absolutely fuck all to say about any of this. if she even knows avexis is in haven
you don't know avexis's significance if you haven't watched dawn of the seeker. we don't see avexis again following in your heart shall burn
Helisma Derrington. becomes your lead of creature research upon your arrival to skyhold. presumably one of minaeve's assistants prior as she is given the position by minaeve if minaeve lives
(minaeve is the only character afaik that you can talk to about the tranquil at any kind of length and who appears to give any kind of shit about them)
you can have conversation with helisma, which i think is great, and she even gives you war table missions if you talk with her enough. it's been too long since i've played and i couldn't find a full video, but you can get SOME of her perspective on being tranquil. it isn't much. her memory doesn't appear to be very good
Clemence. you have one (1) conversation with him which is his recruitment, and that's only if you check out the mages in redcliffe and then bother to talk to ppl after your convo with alexius. his conversation is interesting but brief. i don't know if anyone has taken a fly cam for close ups on everyone wearing robes in redcliffe, but for the average player, he's the only tranquil we know to be there. we do not see him again
Maddox. a tranquil from kirkwall. he was made tranquil for passing love letters. samson was kicked out of the templars for passing them for him. the only thing cullen has to say about it is that meredith made mages tranquil for even lesser "offenses"; he doesn't appear overly bothered by this
you only get to see maddox if you side with the mages. he dies. he kills himself ostensibly to aid samson. he remains loyal to samson to the end. this is arguably the best evidence we have of a tranquil exercising autonomy
(EDIT: forgot to mention Pharamond. you only learn about him by finding an obscure note in a certain cave in the western approach. it doesn't really tell you what he was doing there and you have to intuit that he's an ex-tranquil. you don't know the significance of this unless you've read asunder)
~
the tranquil are all killed. not all of them obviously, but a lot. the majority. so many are killed that their murderers have trouble finding more to kill. they are killed by the venatori. their skulls are used to make the ocularum that allow you to find the shards. tranquil skulls specifically are needed to make them. we don't know how they find this out
a tranquil must be killed within proximity to shards for the oculara to work. no one knows where that proximity is until the tranquil is killed and the oculara is able to be made. if the oculara doesn't work, they move to a different location and try again. the tranquil must be killed exactly as a demon possesses them. if their death is off even by mere minutes, it won't work. they have to do it again
(take into account how many ocularum there are. take into account that tranquil were among the largest populations in the circles and that the majority of them were killed. remember how many ocularum there are. take into account the failures during discovery and the failures during attempts to make them. estimate a number. remember that so many tranquil were killed, the venatori struggled to find more to kill. double the number)
you only find out what happened to the tranquil, this knowledge about the ocularum, if you enter the shack near the docks in redcliffe. it requires the deft hands fine tools perk. nothing is said about them otherwise
your companions have various dialogue about this. cassandra says she'd wondered what happened to them and that she should have looked harder to find them. solas says he'd wondered what happened, he says their deaths are a waste. vivienne says she'd assumed they were with the rebels and that she shouldn't have. cole says they couldn't call for help, that if he'd heard them he'd have saved them, that he'll avenge them
once you leave, no one says anything more. you can't say anything more. you don't even get a war table mission about it. if this happens prior to promise of destruction you can't bring it up in your post-quest convo with cass. you can't bring it up when you later discuss releasing the truth of the cure with her
the ocularum stay up. you can continue to use them. nothing is mentioned about whether they are ever taken down
people didn't care about the tranquil, if they even noticed they were gone. the people who cared about them didn't look hard enough for them, or they decided someone else must have. no one mentions them to you when you're herald, when you're inquisitor; you aren't given the option to look for them
the loyal templars didn't protect them. the seekers didn't protect them. the rebel mages didn't protect them. no other mage group protected them. minaeve is the only person we know of that makes an effort to protect as many as she can
we never get to talk to any tranquil character about this. we can't tell them about the ocularum. we can't tell them about the cure
the tranquil suffer the worst cruelties the circles have to offer. and then they die. they are killed en masse. off-screen. and they are never mentioned again
no one cares about them. you aren't allowed to care about them. the bioware writers sure as fuck don't care about them
#dragon age critical#inquisition critical#tranquil#ocularum#suicide cw#avexis#minaeve#clemence#maddox#helisma#harritt#But yeah I hard agree that this is a topic that shouldn't be glossed over or treated as a hidden lore tid bit#however narratively accurate that is for dragon age given the general thought is tranquil are no more than tools#and that mages can't handle looking at them for fear and projection among other things.#I also honestly hate the game presents the reversal of tranquility as a “cure”#it's finishing the procedure that was done to them. Elective or not.#avexius really grinds my gears too. because she's so important to cassandra's story but there is no interaction.#there is no acknowledgement that this happened to her with or without cassandra's knowledge#there is no context to their relationship which while on par with inquisitions horrible implementation of additional media tie ins#long post

Hi! I would love to hear why you think Klaus and Bonnie would be a compatible or at least fascinating match :) I can tell you're going to turn me into a Klonnie shipper even though the last thing I need in my life is another doomed OTP!!
Hey :D I love a good doomed ship it makes the fandom more interesting especially in terms of creativity tbh.
Bonnie had proven herself to be just as morally corrupt as other characters as needed. Sure, it wasn’t to the extreme of others but it existed especially if her friends were threatened. That type of loyalty and strength would be what Klaus would like because of how possessive and selfish he is.
There’s Bennett-Mikaelson connections through the lore of TVD. Ayana was Esther’s mentor. Abby entombed Mikael. Then in present there’s Esther prasing Bonnie for being the one to fight Klaus. Elijah recruited Bonnie to do it. Both Bonnie and Klaus have parental struggles on both sides. Klaus is more forefront than Bonnie’s but it exists. Tagging my friends content here :).
Klaus was introduced with an affinity for witches (Gloria, Maddox, Greta..)it was just dropped after well you know ;). But in a sibling light I could see both Rebekah and Kol taking a liking to Bonnie. Rebekah wanted that normal highschool experience and Kol was formerly a witch. We got a little bit of Kennett moments in s4 but that was dropped. Bonnie is the only TVD character to never have her own side friend out the group.
Narratively TVD would’ve just had to work with their few key points to make Klonnie a slow burn ship from s2-4 tbh. Bonnie kept getting the short-stick. Season 3 she got cheated on, her mother abandoned again, she had all the reasons to distant herself from her friends and end up in someone’s darker arms. The Mikaelson Ball ep Esther is leeching off Bonnie and her bloodline yet Bonnie is no where to be found… huh… Bonnie doesn’t get enough in universe credit for her actions because she has not only nearly killed Klaus she has saved his life(and everyone else’s.)
Season 4 Bonnie was dipping into a darker side with Expression and she blindly trusted Shane just to learn magic. It would be another moment for Klaus to try and get in her good graces. Klaus would have to open up emotionally for Bonnie to sympathize with him. I think they would challenge each other. Bonnie is one of the female characters who can fight back to people who are trying to harm her in a way Elena or Caroline can’t tbh.
Bonnie wasn’t just any witch either she was a Bennett which her family is responsible for nearly everything in TVD. I don’t think Klaus would’ve suddenly became a “Disney prince” type of BF by any means but I could see the relationship working. Klaus is still an elitist bastard with years of knowledge Bonnie would want. Bonnie is willing to give that loyalty to anyone who is good to her. Cami is seen as good and she even falls for Klaus lmao.
Last point people only play morality clauses with Bonnie because the series does. By the end of TVD Bonnie considers Damon not Elena or Caroline or Matt her bestfriend. That should say enough about what Bonnie would allow but….The writers and fans will argue that Bonnie doesn’t deserve to be paired up with toxic men or women but TVD never introduced anyone that was “morally good” by our world standards. Even Enzo physically harmed Bonnie pre-relationship. The other leads are white and never held to the same standards. Elena said it was Stefan until it wasn’t. Caroline said no to Klaus until she didn’t. Hayley’s arc includes with her fucking Klaus and dating Elijah… the list could continue.
Hope I made it all clear 😁.
