But on that note I was wondering - in Spain is this as heavily frowned upon as it is in (for example) the UK and USA? Not in a condescending way I just noticed that for example in Greece (where I'm from) its not as diverse so many people don't really know any better (not necessarily an excuse) compared to the UK (where I live now) where the communities are very mixed and people are more aware of the nuances... I don't know if that makes any sense I might just be rambling...

hi anon! happy new year to you too! 🫶 no, unfortunately, spain is far behind the uk and usa when it comes to even acknowledging cultural appropriation. and there are still many things that we do in the year 2025 that are super racist, like i'm sure you all have heard about racist chants and slurs still being used at football matches in spain. 🥴

but at least we are starting to bring more attention to the issues of racism, cultural appropriation and macro and micro aggressions in spain, and we need to continue to push hard on this topic. a few examples:

blackface - yes, in spain we still do blackface. 🤦‍♀️ so every three kings' day, there are parades all over spain called "cabalgata de reyes magos" and one of the kings, baltasar, is traditionally portrayed by a white man in blackface. there is more attention being paid to how this is wrong, and some parade organisers are stopping this, but unfortunately, it still happens!

chinos/pakis - did you know that in spain the small convenience or corner shops where you can buy alcohol and other things are called "chinos" or "pakis" (in addition to other names referring directly to an ethnic group)? and if you couldn't guess, that translates directly to chinese and pakistani in spanish, and is an example of a micro aggression that 'others' immigrants in this country. there are grassroots movements in places like barcelona to change this habit (hashtag #tengonombre), but you still hear it quite commonly (even alexia has said it 😬). i have tried to make a conscious effort to not say this myself as it has become a mainstream word in spanish society. 🙏

Ableism but make it leftist

Maybe I'll think of a catchier title later but rn I need to talk about this before I boil away with rage.

Context: someone in my local queer community FB group asked for volunteer opportunities. They expressed particular interest in working with the elderly or "people who need the most help". There were only a couple suggestions when I saw the post so I added mine, that there's several underserved young (younger than elderly anyway) queer people in our community who are severely disabled and housebound. I'm one of them though I didn't mention it but the Leftist Bully knows this.

Another disabled group member I've interacted with before thanked me for bringing this up and I felt good about it until a couple days later when I got a new notification. LB, as I'll call them, was smugly concerned that we (me and my Disabled Acquaintance) were taking resources from queer elders.

Point #1. We weren't using any resources, we were just expressing a community need to someone who asked who in the community has needs...

LB continued that there are "so many" resources we could be using instead which is news to me! They then made a point to tag both me and DA and tell us that "if we're so lonely why don't we just meet up with seniors". I considered going over point by point why they were being ignorant at best but I decided to save my energy and politely asked them not to speak so condescendingly about topics they aren't familiar with. Cue the laugh react. So we're not even pretending to care anymore, great.

They respond with a lengthy paragraph about how they are qualified to determine who gets resources or not because of all the organizing they do. They insisted again that there are other resources, and pay attention to this, "for young queers". Dude... There sure are resources for young queers but

Point #2. THAT'S NOT WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT YOU CHUCKLEFUCK. We were specifically talking about housebound queer people who aren't old enough for social security resources.

Point #3. You can't cry tone policing when you were the one who butted into a conversation to "correct" someone over what was allegedly a resource management dispute. I mean apparently you can and they did but it's pretty ridiculous

Re: citing their community organizing record and heavily implied that DA and I are not contributing to the same degree

Point #4a. DA and I are both very active in disability organizing. We both run pages/groups for raising awareness and connecting people to resources as well as one on one assisting people.

4b. We're both severely disabled and housebound, that kind of gets in the way of a lot of activism. I used to do a lot more when my health was better.

4c. Leftists like to talk big, "your productivity doesn't define your worth" until someone isn't able to do whatever type of labor that supposedly makes people respectable.

Point #5. Concern trolling. If they really cared they would have kindly directed me to some concrete resources instead of lecturing me to shut up

Point #6. They didn't have a problem with the person who brought up volunteering at the animal shelter.

Point #7. LB requests rides from the community on a weekly basis. The community rallied around them when they lost their home to a fire last year. They are absolutely in their right to do this! It's just telling how it's ok for them to ask for help. And to top it off I've been consistently signal boosting them and recommending their freelance services, expending my limited resources to help them. I thought we were becoming friends.

in !!!‼️MY EXPERIENCE‼️!!! as a black queer person, working with all straight white men vs all straight white women is literally so different. both of them make my anxiety fly through the roof and i’m always waiting for the other shoe to drop (which it usually does) but at least the women are slightly less likely to call you a slur to your face. they still will, in my experience, but it’s usually where you can’t hear it. i love pennsylvania. the prison that keeps imprisoning poc/queer people alike. i

can’t escape bc im not making enough money. and i can’t find another job, i’ve tried and sent in apps, went to interviews. i have a bachelor’s in psych and will literally work anywhere that pays more than $17/hr. where are all these jobs people are complaining that no one wants??? give them to me, now!!

also, when working with people with disabilities. it does not matter, the highest on the work hierarchy will be saying the r slur every other word. aides, supervisors, nurses. like, seriously? you work with people that have had that word used against them their entire lives to make them feel and seen as less than human, but you use it around and towards them like it’s nothing. fuck off with that shit. this is why you don’t make friends with people you work with bc it’s so easy for them to be a piece of shit.

and like, it’s not like i can actually report anyone for it. one day i was gonna report a fellow aide to the super for calling an individual the r slur but he came into our unit and had a whole conversation with one of the individuals about how he’s ’r-slur’ but not as much as the others since he can hold a conversation so that makes him better than the others. these conversations have happened infront of management. how is this place allowed to run? bc all of management are a bunch of old white people who do nothing but push paper all day.

the way a lot of older people just don’t care about learning about different cultures. they just spout shit out. someone i work with (unfortunately) just said that ramadan is a disgusting holiday and that they break their fasts like animals. and he’s one of the ‘all muslims are terrorists’ blah blah bullshit people. it is so tiring being 1 of 4 non white people in the entire building. and saying anything against them is a death sentence bc everyone else (all 🤚🏻 people, by the way) fucking agrees with the shit. i’ve tried before and it just gets you shamed into shutting up.
