Today I start a blog, today i’m taking 2 months off uni to keep myself from careening right away from uni and right into hospital. I recognise the spiral and now I’m documenting the differences i’m making in getting better. I don’t want to give you the exposition, but i’m gonna lay out the goals, and i’m going to keep you updated.
It’s the middle of my first semester of 2023, and i’m bailing out. I’m not accepting the 2 additional fails this semester is going to give me and the inability to catch up, after spending the last 2 weeks cleaning out my fathers dragon hoard, that’s ok, i was going to take next semester off but i’d rather stop here, refocus and rebalance myself.
My goals for the next 2 motnhs are to
- finish that hoard clearing 🐲
- Repair the relationships throwing me off my focus when i study 🏡
- Repair the thoughts that spiral out and cause me to careen into chaos 🧠
Today i had my reading from Jennie Allens Get out of your head, i’m up to chapter 9 and hoping to give it to my brother to read on the 9th of may, that’s 14 days to finish it. (Ft the book i’m keeping the notes in). I also made a delivery for my florist friend but got roped into some extra tasks as her shop is up and running.

I guess if you’re reading this, let’s find out what 2 months can do together.

a special fuck you to these four fuckwits today! the faces of genocide. arthur phillip, the one who established the colony and invaded the land, lachlan macquarie, the terrorist mass murderer (why the FUCK do we have a uni named after him??), james stirling, the leader of the pinjarra massacre, and george arthur, the man who devised the ‘black line’ and made it his personal mission to commit genocide in tasmania.
(and fun fact! every single one of them died in the uk, where they were born. every single one of them counted themselves to the bone as british. they actively chose to come to australia to commit these atrocities and then sailed on home. they are not fucking australians. australia today suffers from the consequences that they skipped out on. people whinge about, why are australians pissed off at the british government for something other australians did? because! those fuckers were not australians! they held positions of power given to them by the british government, and came from britain and returned to britain and worked with british interests in mind and they did it out of choice.)

yo yo yo just found out that australia was very recently first in the world to legalise psilocybin (magic/mushrooms) as a treatment for treatment-resistant depression! seems to be some concerns bc it skipped some late trial stages, but there ARE still ongoing studies for it and this is SO huge and i'm VERY excited

The Voice
Uncle Wayne ‘Coco’ Wharton does not think The Voice will get up. I think the referendum will be a ‘Yes’ despite places in Australia like Queensland where there may be a No vote. Ironic, because this is where there are the most blackfellas. 4PR – Voice of the People · Wayne 'Coco' Wharton on 'The Voice' This is what Wayne Wharton had to say at a panel discussion at Macquarie Uni on 26 April 2023…

so you wanna write a heartbreak high fic, but you're american (part 3)
I decided to create a separate post for the HSC, ATAR, uni and post-secondary study because our system is so completely different to American systems (and because my previous post was too long).
In Australia, tertiary study falls into two categories: higher education, and vocational education and training. This post will touch on university, as well as other forms of tertiary study and trades.
The uni part of this will be the longest because it tends to be the thing most people get wrong.
Preliminary/HSC
In NSW, year 11 (Preliminary) only goes for three terms. In term 4 of the calendar year in which you started year 11, you start the HSC course, which goes from term 4 of that year to term 3 of the following year. Midway through term 3, you do your trial exams (if you are doing music/drama/languages/anything with a performance/oral component/major work, you will have your practical exam/major work submission in the latter part of term 3). You then will have a graduation ceremony at the end of term 3, and your HSC exams will happen in October-November (term 4), while the kids in the grade below you are starting their HSC coursework. Nothing you do in year 11 counts towards the HSC (until term 4); in fact, nothing you do in any year up until you do your first HSC assessments counts towards your HSC. We don't have grade point averages here. Actually, your rankings in your individual subjects are probably more important than your actual marks (this video explains it). More academic kids might get a bit more competitive about rankings but also tend to want to work together to ensure that they all do well.
ATAR
After you do your HSC exams in year 12, depending on the combination of subjects you did and how well you did in your courses, you get an ATAR, which determines what courses you can get into at uni. This article explains somewhat how different subjects are scaled (because there are some that are perceived to be more difficult than others; this is objectively true in some cases, for example, advanced maths is called advanced for a reason so a higher mark in advanced should be seen as more meaningful than a higher mark in standard, but in other cases, it gets a bit more confusing). What it boils down to is certain subjects tend to attract more 'high achievers' than others, so get scaled higher. That being said, the prevailing advice is that everyone should choose the subjects they like and are good at, not what they think will get them into uni.
Higher education
Firstly, we call university "uni" here. We don't say "college" or "school" to talk specifically about university (if an Australian person is talking about going to school, they're either still in compulsory schooling, i.e. K-12, or they're a teacher). We do sooooort of have college here, but I'll touch on that later.
In Australia, kids apply for the course, not the university. Whether or not you get into the course you want is, for the most part, dependent on your ATAR. The exception is if you're applying for something like a creative arts course that might require an audition, or submission of a portfolio. Most unis offer early admission, particularly for kids who live in rural areas, and UNSW has a program for indigenous students for Business, Education, Law, Medicine, Social Work, or Science & Engineering. The most common universities you'll hear about in Sydney are USyd, UNSW, UTS, Western Sydney Uni and Macquarie, then there are ANU and UC in Canberra, LaTrobe in Albury/Wodonga, CSU in Dubbo/Bathurst/Wagga Wagga, UNE in Armidale and Newcastle Uni. There's also Notre Dame, which is a private, religious institution, and a bunch of other smaller schools.
USyd is the oldest university in NSW; it's referred to as a sandstone uni and tends to be the most sought after one that most people want to go to.
Most courses here are Commonwealth Supported, and domestic students are allowed to claim what's called HECS, meaning that you defer payment of your uni fees until you start earning a certain amount of money, and then it comes out of your taxes. In some cases, scholarships are offered, but those are generally more academic scholarships, or, say, for students studying to be teachers, they might get offered a scholarship to teach a certain school subject and as part of their scholarship get a guaranteed position at a hard-to-staff schooling area. As I said in part 2, we don't have anything like the NCAA here (it's not like the Sydney Uni basketball team has a mega rivalry with the UNSW basketball team like UNC vs Duke for example). Australian kids also don't have to pay exorbitant fees to apply for the courses they want. When I was applying to uni as a year 12 student, I paid something like $30 to UAC and applied for every arts/law course available in the Sydney area. I think there's a limit on how many courses you can apply for (maybe 16 or so) but it has been a while since I've applied for an undergrad uni course, so I could be wrong. That being said, a kid might be eligible for a scholarship if they excel at sport, but I believe they'd have to be already enrolled in the university and achieving academically at a certain level first.
Coming back to the "college" thing - a lot of kids tend to go to uni where they live and commute to and from there. That being said, sometimes kids come from towns where there are no universities, or kids from Sydney might end up going to uni interstate or to somewhere like Charles Sturt, which has campuses in Dubbo and Bathurst. "College" in Australia refers to the residential housing available to students living on campus (usually kids studying away from home, but some locals also choose to opt for this as well).
As for uni life, I'd suggest researching the different social clubs and societies different universities have.
Vocational education and training
Not everyone chooses to go to uni after they leave school. A lot of schools actually offer school-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SBATs) in a number of different industries, which counts towards the HSC and is professional work experience. Early childhood and automotive tend to be really popular. TAFE (Australia's largest vocational education and training provider) provides a lot of courses and opportunities for people (some of the courses are actually really cool; a friend of mine did a music course through TAFE and recorded a bunch of singles).
Work experience
This isn't really related to post-secondary schooling, but is still a pretty important aspect of the NSW school experience. Usually in year 10, kids spend a week doing work experience (there's actually a plot in the original Heartbreak High series about it that Jane and Leanne from Snarkbreak High talked about). Kids generally have to organise it themselves and it's usually related to a career they'd like to have after school. My younger brother did his at our local vet, and after that, he realised he no longer wanted to be a vet.
Other resources
Wikipedia (don't let anyone tell you not to use it - it's one of the best peer-reviewed journals ever and all the info on Australian schooling there is completely legit)
NESA
Bored of Studies forum
Snarkbreak High podcast (this is run by 2 Australian teachers; I think they're from Melbourne and they're currently only doing the original series but they have some great commentary, and they've even had Scott Major, aka Peter Rivers, aka Darren's dad as a guest)
Sydney Morning Herald (they always have a ton of articles about NSW schooling)

I used to love the vending machine chicken sandwich I would have at Sydney uni. I think Macquarie had one too.
As a kid, the concept of the vending machine amazed me. Put in money, instant cold food or hot drink. Try explaining that to the people before capitalism.
Tumblr media
I don't think it exists anymore but there was an Asian shop next to Hornsby station across the road that sold hot chicken rolls with gravy.
Very messy, but delicious on a cold winter's day.
Communists want you to forget that small business is also a part of capitalism. It's hardly homogeneous.
If I want a chicken and pineapple sandwich, toasted, I can have that with my cappuccino at the local cafe, and sit listening to music or writing Tumblr posts, and the staff will try to make me happy. Because capitalism.
They don't do that in communist countries, because the State owns the business and pays you the same regardless of how good you are at your job. Why bother making customers happy? If there were none, you would still be paid!
Tales from behind the old iron curtain are consistent. Everyone was miserable and mean. Nobody struggles for excellence. Anything you do will be taken by the State. What is the point of being creative?
Tumblr media
But under capitalism, the business competes, and the ones that make customers happy have the advantage.
They will work at the combination of price and presentation, and the more money you can spend, the better everything gets. Colours, seating, music, lighting over food, everything is thought about and maximised. If someone makes a better coffee machine for an affordable price, they will buy it.
Year after year, we have more variety of foods and drinks. And if you have more money to spend, that explodes. Not to mention...
Tumblr media
Innovation like home or office delivery! Holy cow, has that taken off! I loathe the Uber eats sound at the café but there's no denying it has worked well, and I expect drone delivery will be standard soon.
Imagine popping back in time to the 1950s, and telling them all the weird and wild types of coffee and tea, not to mention delicious freshly made rolls, they can have delivered to an office from just an ordinary cafe.
Heck, the cappuccino in Australia exists because of Italian immigration. Incredibly popular.
It pretty much came in from being exotic and rare to being the standard beverage. Growing up, everyone pretty much had tea, two sugars, milk. Now I would not be surprised to drive into some remote location and still get a decent cappuccino.
I remember the coffee we had as a kid. The sugar was there to mask the taste, and you drank it because the alternative was falling asleep, possibly while driving.
If you were well off, you could grind up and brew better than the foul instant coffee, but the common folk at work popped open their giant cans, put a teaspoon of the horrid sticky stuff in a cup, poured in literally boiling water (I have had so many mild burns over the years from the office boiler), and drank with nose pinched.
Capitalism is awesome. The free market, the competition, the rewards for innovation and good customer service, these are things those in communist countries can only dream of.
Yeltsin knew communism was doomed when he went to an American supermarket. We are surrounded by quality and quantity that they can never have.
But the Leftists never want you to compare like with like, to compare capitalism and communism.
Instead, they are frauds, comparing reality to the fantasy, free stuff in exchange for doing nothing, a state that has never seen occurred except for the infants and the elderly.
Leftists are forever trying to claw backwards, to being a baby, not even having to wipe their own arses, Mommy State just giving them everything, no work, no demands, no mind.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, the same Leftists say babies aren't really alive. Oh, sweet irony!

Even Christmas couldn’t keep the Liberals from attacking higher education. In the Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook, the government announced $2.2 billion in university funding cuts over the next two years.
The Liberals’ cuts will be disastrous for students who rely on Commonwealth supported places. Student debt has quadrupled in the last 20 years and is already predicted to rise further. These cuts will only increase the level of debt.
On top of this, the Liberals are not proposing to better regulate higher education. Their plan is the opposite – by continually lowering government funding, they intend to lay the basis to completely deregulate university fees, allowing campus administrations to charge whatever they want for a degree.
The first National Day Of Action for higher education will take place on March 21, 2018. Event: www.facebook.com/events/180945125976938/

[Day 33] Chocolate cake and a holographic bookmark! - 13/Feb/2018
My bookshelf is growing! These are all the books I have so far (note - “Room” on the far right isn’t for a module, it was free from Roehampton and my entertainment on the flight over). I need to check my Amazon order list to see if I have any still undelivered. If not, then the rest of my texts I have as online editions, although I had a bit of an epiphany, I’ve been thinking to myself “how can I read a physical book without buying it (and costing a lot to ship home)?” The library, duh! So I am going to see which books I can get from the library as reading a physical book is so much better.
I am about 120 pages into Americanah which is about 400 pages total, although it has small text so it is taking a while to get through. I am somewhat enjoying it so far, but it is cutting between present day and past experiences which can be a little confusing. It is an odd feeling for me to read a text published in 2013, it tackles many modern-day race issues but also mentions things like Facebook which I am certainly not used to when reading Victorian novels!
Tumblr media
Today I went on a little trip out, nothing much exciting. Bought a big ol’ slab of cake from Engadine Bakehouse. It was nice but I had to leave some until later - I couldn’t eat it all! I also bought another bookmark (these are becoming a collectors item for me...) This one is from the local pharmacy, it is holographic! Is that the right word? 3D? It moves when you tilt it, left to right! Koalas are cute! I am starting to get quite a collection of bookmarks as I am getting quite a few free ones with my book deliveries.
Tumblr media
Today is my last day of quiet before chaos! I am excited but also somewhat intimidated. Here is my week’s schedule:
Wednesday: “Essentials Information Evening” 5.30pm - 8.30pm
Thursday: Campus and Library tour 1pm - 2pm
Friday: “Strategies for academic success” 11am - 12.30pm followed by game afternoon and BBQ (until 2.30pm)
Saturday: Sydney Sights Walking Tour! 9am - 5pm (how will I survive??)
Sunday is a day off before “official” Orientation week begins on the 19th. I will be posting a blog for each of these events with more details of what they are as I don’t have much idea myself yet! It should be fun and informative, but I hope I have the energy to remain enthusiastic throughout it all...
