Numerous organizations worldwide are significantly lagging behind in the process of updating their Microsoft Exchange email servers, thereby exposing their entities to substantial risks associated with malware, data breaches, ransomware attacks, and various other cyber threats. According to a recent report from The ShadowServer Foundation, nearly 20,000 internet-connected servers are operating on software versions that have reached their end-of-life (EoL), consequently no longer receiving critical security updates. These servers are predominantly situated in Europe (comprising over half of the total), the United States (approximately 6,000), and various Asian countries (approximately 2,200). However, security researcher Yutaka Sejiyama, affiliated with Macnica, suggests that the issue may be even more extensive than initially identified. Conducting a scan on Shodan to identify vulnerable Exchange servers, Sejiyama and the team discovered over 30,000 endpoints. As of late November 2023, they observed more than 26,000 instances of Exchange Server 2013, over 4,000 instances of Server 2010, and 275 instances of Exchange Server 2007. These findings indicate a concerning lack of progress in upgrading these servers, as the number of vulnerable servers has only increased by 18% since April of the same year, which Sejiyama deems a sluggish upgrade rate. Consequently, the persistence of vulnerabilities and their exploitation by cyber threat actors continues to pose a significant concern. Microsoft Exchange email servers are particularly attractive targets for cybercriminals due to the ease of access they provide to the target network. Moreover, these servers frequently store sensitive information, including login credentials, crucial communications, and vital files. As an example, earlier in the year, The ShadowServer Foundation issued a warning regarding the delayed patching of servers against ProxyNotShell, a vulnerability that enabled threat actors to execute malicious code remotely. To mitigate the risks associated with ProxyNotShell and other potential threats targeting Exchange servers, it is imperative to employ the latest software version and ensure that it remains consistently updated.
