I heard you all enjoy robot dinosaurs...
Might I also interest you in the real creatures who walked Aloy's homeland long before the time of the Old Ones?
Tumblr media
NORA SACRED LAND
DINOSAUR RIDGE, NEAR DENVER
(Devil's Grief), COLORADO, USA
Fifteen miles west of Denver is a natural wonderland called DINOSAUR RIDGE!
Did we know what that was before we went? No. We let curiosity lead us.
I feel like that's very much in keeping with the spirit of Horizon Zero Dawn.
Post 1 of 6 from Dinosaur Ridge
See Part 2 here: Dinosaur Ridge: Bones, Tracks, and Even Ripple Marks from an Ancient Sea Make This a Very Special Place
I don't have great pictures of Denver for you, because I spent most of my Denver time outside the city. I think you'll agree, I made the cool (read: nerdy) choice.

The illness hit my brain again and I will ramble about why I like the Ota tribe. Again. Yes. Again.
I mean, look
Tumblr media
Soooooooo badass, right?!
The 5 characters in the photo come from Ota City, where polluted by industry, and has become a slum filled with crime. That's why they are Ota Tribe.
When they first appeared in the anime, I didn't even see the art above, what I saw was a group of people wrapped in robes and looking like beggars asking for money. When Haru (one of the main characters) gave them a piece of candy, it was enough to make them happy and I was like "Aww they do look a bit weird but it's cute somehow"
no shit. they fucking blew up the mansion after taking the gold with them. But still...cute? (sorry the mansion owner, you have too many girls with you, I'm jealous). In short, that's enough for me to have a basic opinion about these characters.
They steal, but they are also not picky with what they get. They are chaotic, but they have their own rule.
I look at the cast of characters in the anime and it's funny, not counting the NPCs that look like they're copied and pasted, the main cast is like this
Tumblr media
I swear the air and water in Ota are polluted from the dye factory or something that's giving them that edgy emo make-up aesthetic look (Oh don't worry Saigo you look great, and Yukigaya you look adorable)
I looked at this team and the only thing that popped into my head was that they were all picked up from the trash can and taken to a garbage dump (effortlessly) by Sonoda.
Sonoda is the ermmm pretty boy with the mask in the center. Yeah I know he looks normal and you can find a bunch of white-haired anime guys like him or whatever. That's right, why are you wearing a shirt, tie and bow-tie shoes in this city? Are you a lost high school student or are you trying to look more mature with that style? (It's suit you <3) and I still love this photo of you.
Tumblr media
Even though he's an asshole, I have to admit that his looks are so deceiving. His eyes are very sad, he drags out the last syllable, he apologizes when people tell him he's not allowed to do that (still does), and he likes to bring food home to share with everyone ( even though it contains explosives). He beats and kills people because he likes it, oh what an atrocity. Best boy ever. We should throw him down the drain.
He already lives in such a stinky place? whoops
Haneda Kiyoshiro. yeah that baby face boy. yeah. He is obsessed with his leader. In a best-worst way that makes you back and forth between "he has a crush on Sonoda" and "He wants to crush Sonoda". It's very complicated but I wrote a fic on ao3 about him so you can check it out-
anw I was a bit surprised because I thought they had dumb luck when it came to making this and that machine but honestly, they're pretty good, aren't they? Especially Haneda's birthday fact, he used paper to write down and analyze Sonoda's behavior. I thought that the Ota tribe was completely illiterate, they couldn't read and never had a book or something ToT (It's all because the battle with Minato was so impressive)
Yukigaya, girl, so cute I want to adopt her. She's always hungry and eats cakes all the time, but she's still 44kg?? girl u okay???
Asahikawa, the joker gremlin. He is. everything. I'm sorry for calling you joker. You are funny, always happy and smiling but your taste in music is...urg...
Saigo. Everyone needs a big man in their team. He looks the most normal but I don't know? He is on good terms with all the members. But is there really a normal person in Ota?

FANTASTICS Hori Natsuki, thanks to Kimura Keito I can do my best, "I really love him"; The family-like relationship between "KetoNatsu"
- Since this is a pair interview, I want to hear about your relationship. Hori-san claims he is someone who keeps a large personal space but you seem very close with Kimura-san Hori: Because he broke into it… (laugh) Keito: I broke through (laugh) - (laugh) Within the group, what kind of relationship do you have? Hori: How can I say this, I seriously think it’s like I’ve given him an exemption. Because he’ll always say irritating things as if it’s normal. Stuff you wouldn’t usually say to others right? So in that sense, it really does feel like we're family.  Keito: That’s right. He’s like my older brother. We’re only two years apart… No, there’s even a two year difference between us… (laughs) Hori: He says I’m like an older brother, but sometimes he teases me and calls me “Nacchan” (laugh) Keito: (laugh)

Moon Tribe headcanons nobody asked for because I went digging through my old blog for my 10-year-old posts and I can't stop thinking about them!!
First, I think they are related to the Celestials at least by a common ancestor. Their relationship is never explained, but it doesn't seem like coincidence that both of them have gold hair and pointy ears and live in space.
Personally I like to think that the Moon Tribe are the descendants of Celestials who were exiled ages ago. This plays on the exile of Tsukuyomi to the night and of Wu Gang/Katsuura Otoko to the moon as a punishment in their respective legends. I also think a lot how "A Resolute Person", one of Waka's themes, is also a dark, tense version of the Celestials' Theme...
Since then, distanced from Takamagahara, they lost much of their divine power, but maintained their longevity and some magic. They became obsessed with developing mechanical technology, and missing their lush homeland, used it to reform the barren Moon into something more habitable. Then they turned their gaze to the earth/Nippon.
AFAIK the timelime on anything the Moon Tribe did was never established. But here's how I imagine it. Before the calamity, the Moon Tribe came to Nippon and birthed the civilization we now see the ruins of. They learned how to harness lightning, built things like Tsuta Ruins and the Daidarabotchi. The aesthetic of the dogu and Clay Dolls is consistent with other stuff we see from the moon--and also the missiles Yami launches in its fourth phase.
Which brings me to the next part: the Moon Tribe at least partly created Yami and other bosses/demons. The art book describes the interior of the Ark of Yamato as a sort of lab where these beings were being raised. To what end? To wage war, perhaps--against the Celestials, either as an act of revenge, or for some reason that resulted in their exile to begin with--or perhaps against the faction down in Nippon. The demons were either created or found, and then augmented with the Moon Tribe's technology. Eventually war broke out. Yami, bound to the Ark, and the augmented demons take over the machines and wipe everyone out. The Moon Tribe can't stand up to their own creations. Orochi escapes in the chaos. Only the four known Lunarians survived--Sugawara had already been sent to Nippon in exile by a corrupted lunar government. Baby Kaguya was sent away Superman-style to save her. Kurow is... doing something. And Waka (unknowingly, somehow?) escapes on the Ark. Orochi, grown stronger, finds the Celestial Plain via the pull of the Ark and the power it shares with the demons.
Whatever was done to create Yami was brutal. It resents the Moon Tribe, the gods, those who can create, for it cannot. It only knows destruction, death with no divine respite. With all others dead, it knows Waka escaped, and its priority is the extinction of the Moon Tribe.
When Kaguya returns to the Moon, she finds a desolate waste, littered with strange metal and stone. The machines that helped maintain life on the Moon are broken, the silver gardens turned to dust. Only her rocket still glows. Sugawara never had a chance to meet her, to tell her what she is and what she would find. But in the ruins, an unimaginable story reveals itself to her. Maybe she finds her new life as its keeper and chronicler.

seeing talks abt tf religions n brain goes buckwild into the fusion churches on the rez and the whole rabbithole that comes with them but also it'd be a really good exploration of characters when thinking abt these sorts of things and the damage/potential to still somewhat find ways to practice and integrate culture without it being forcibly engrained into the community

"...So why are the machines getting so upset?"
A young Fusataro stares at the machine that's sitting in the back of their caravan, being pulled by a pair of old Striders.
The human-like machine had recognized them as old enough to have not been affected by the breakdown of command. Blinders on their optics kept them from spooking at the sight of the humans, and cords tied to the wires on the sides of their faces acted like brindles. They were this travelling clans' pack mules, essentially. This caravan made out of the carcass of a train of some kind, combined with pieces of different machines.
He tilts his chin up, humming under his breath, "We're not sure, any of us." Rage tapped his fingers on the edge of the caravan's floor, "My birds were never supposed to be seen by humans, we were supposed to stay way up in the sky. Something's gone wrong."
Fusataro frowned at him, but fell silent. The only sound remaining is the steps of the tribe and the rolling rattle of the caravan wheels.
Rage sighs and looks away, towards the setting sun. He's not lying. He just can't say the whole truth. The distress signal Gaia had sent out, a silent warning to the douji, followed by deathly silence. He's spoken with others, but no one was told, not even Paresse, who once had a direct line to Gaia.
Just a scream. And then silence.
He'd gone there, to Gaia Prime, when he'd gotten the distress signal. He'd seen the great crater. But it was too hot for even him to approach. Orghullo has been considering going, given he and Eater are meant to tread into the places where stone rolls molten out of the earth. But the two have their own tribes to look after.
He'd never really spoken much with the humans. Not until the Stormbirds began to swoop. To stay near the ground.
In the past few years, this small tribe had graduated from hunting the smaller birds--like Longlegs, Glinthawks, Skydrifters, Waterwings, and Sunwings--on to the Dreadwings and the great Stormbirds. Members of the clan all had some piece of a machine's wing on their armor, fanning out in displays bot decorative and defensive. Overlapping light metal over light-colored clothing. They'd once been more attuned to the machines, able to approach Glinthawks by offering them pieces of other machines to occupy them. Some had learned to watch how Dreadwings use their cloaking and the technology was applied to some of their hunters' armor. But now they were in dire straits. The birds had become far more aggressive. And Rage had followed the Stormbirds down, trying to figure out why they were going down. He'd witnessed the travelling tribe cleverly tie down and dispatch the giant machine, then celebrate and camp in its carcass.
He'd approached as he saw them beginning to dig into it, not to strip it bare, but to look into its head and body, like they were investigating it.
That was a mere eleven hours ago. And they'd called him a god. He knew many of the other douji had been called as such, and many reveled in the role. But he corrected them. He was just a machine, but one with a mind like a human. Many of the tribe insisted on calling him a god, but not this young woman and her four friends. The daughter of the head hunter and the boys who made up her hunting party. They were given him as their charge, to guard until they arrived at one of their repeat stomping grounds. He tilted his head towards the north, to the back of the caravan. Away from the Sufa and Higani lands. They were heading towards the Idesh for trading, carrying supplies from the swampy northern lands.
"Why are you staying?"
He looks back at Fusataro and her sparse facial hair, brown eyes intense under her braided hair, only a small few fragments of Sunwing panels decorating them.
He shrugs, "I like you all. And without the Stormbirds in the sky, it gets lonely."
"A machine? Lonely?" One of the other four laughs, but is jabbed by the butt end of anothers' spear. Rage smiles in amusement, reminded of Avaro and Eater's antics before they were released from their own cauldrons.
"Yeah. A Grazer wants a herd, a Scrapper wants a pack, and I appreciate a flock. Is that so bad?" He smiles.
