Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is one of those movies that can be thoroughly analyzed. I feel like the main characters, specifically the band members, all represent a certain ideology and outlook in the time period the movie is set.

i think a lot of my writing proclivities come in part from plays 🤔 plays are made of dialogue and character interaction and a good play is about confrontation and emotional culmination of something that has been building for the entire text. at least the types of plays that i really like. i also admire the economy of language and pacing and how things all weave together. plays aren't a perfect subtle representation of humanity like movies bc the stage is a very specific medium, it's kind of like a heightened and very present version of human behavior
(plays i have read recently and liked: angels in america, a streetcar named desire, death of a salesman, fences. i also watched the boys in the band and ma raineys black bottom on netflix)

the only requirement is a (streaming film) film has to play theatrically for at least a week in one of the major us cities. Rustin releases in select theatres on nov 3rd but releases nov 17 on netflix.
Okay great! Thanks Anon 😊
So yea, that would be great if it goes far in the awards circuit! 😁
Isn't Colman also in The Color Purple 2023??
He might get nominated for that film if he doesn't watch out rofl 🤣
Wow..... from Euphoria to Rustin and The Color Purple 👍🏾😁👏🏾
I love watching folks get their comeup 😁👏🏾
He was good in "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom", and "The Butler" as well. He's usually great in everything I've seen him in!

How Did Chadwick Boseman Find Out He Had Cancer Before his Death?
After Chadwick Boseman passed away on Friday at the age of 43, it has been clear that few people, including Ryan Coogler and Spike Lee, were aware of the actor’s four-year battle with colon cancer.
Dr. Wayne A.I. Frederick, president of Howard University, stated in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that he thought the alumnus appeared “smaller” when he dined with Boseman in 2019.
Boseman was questioned by Frederick about the difficulties of losing weight, who claimed that the actor did so for a particular role.
Frederick reported that the man “gave a long, thorough answer, saying that he was a vegetarian, was working out, and was trying to take care of himself and do what he had to do.” It was a highly considered reaction that did not indicate that anything else was going on.
Boseman “was genuinely in hard-core pain” when filming one of his final parts in Netflix’s upcoming “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” according to Michael Greene, the actor’s agent, but it “was so exciting to him” to work with Denzel Washington on the August Wilson adaption.
According to Greene, she “always trained him not to have people fuss over him.” He was a very, very quiet person and believed that individuals in this industry tend to become overly emotional about things.
In a statement sent by Boseman’s family on social media on Friday, it was revealed that the actor had been battling the illness.
In the announcement, it was stated that Chadwick had battled with stage IV colon cancer for the past four years after receiving a stage III diagnosis in 2016.
“Chadwick, a true fighter, persisted despite everything and produced many of the movies you have grown to adore.
The movies “Marshall,” “Da 5 Bloods,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” and many others were all shot during and in between multiple operations and rounds of chemotherapy. King T’Challa’s portrayal in Black Panther was the greatest professional honor of his life.”
Boseman’s “Black Panther” director revealed in an emotional homage that he wasn’t “privy to the circumstances of his condition” and only became aware of it after the statement.
“I came to understand that he had been coping with his condition the entire time I knew him. He protected his associates from his sorrow since he was a provider, a leader, and a man of religion, dignity, and pride “Coogler composed.
Did the Black Actor Die of Cancer?
Yes, The actor also portrayed trailblazing characters like Thurgood Marshall, Jackie Robinson, and James Brown, making him one of the most in-demand leading men of his generation.
By Hollywood standards, Mr. Boseman was a reclusive guy who infrequently made personal information public. He became famous as an actor somewhat late; he was 35 when he played Jackie Robinson in “42.” Nevertheless, he made up for lost time with a streak of star-making appearances in important biopics.
With roles as diverse as Thurgood Marshall in “Marshall,” James Brown in “Get On Up,” and T’Challa in “Black Panther,” Mr. Boseman became one of his generation’s most in-demand leading men because of his uncomplicated flexibility and classic gravity.
The news of his passing caused shock and grief to permeate society, and many notable individuals in the arts and public life paid respect to Mr. Boseman.
The actor’s portrayals of early Black leaders, according to Martin Luther King III, a human-rights activist and the eldest son of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “brought history to life on the silver screen.”
The Democratic presidential nominee Joseph R. Biden Jr., a former vice president, tweeted that actor Chadwick Boseman has “inspired generations and reminded them they can be anything they want – even superheroes.”

And just as an addon, I know nothing about fashion but I do know a bit about cherry picking, and I don't think just a selection of images frkm a few movies to talk about industry-wise trends is a great basis. I can think of plenty of one time examples of good costuming from the past 10 or so years.
There is the other, much higher budget Cinderella (2015) made just 6 years before the 2021 Cinderella, and that dress was stunning!
There was the netflix "the Crown" drama, (2016), which yes wasn't necessarily costume design in the same vein, but the amount of money they have spent to get their jewellery realistic must be eyewatering. I couldn't find numbers but just look at these babies!
I haven't seen many new movies since 2019, but if you want examples from 2020, there's "Emma" and "Ma Raineys Black Bottom". I think both did a great job with their costuming designs!
There are a ton of examples of good and bad costuming in the past 10 or so years, and that is also true for 20+ years into the past. Personally I like both the modern and the older costuming designs.
Capitalism has definitely ruined a lot, but without harder evidence (I can't find any sources for either "movies are being stingier on their clothing" or the opposite) I think theres too little to go off of, to say either way. Im tempted to go for the more reserved opinion that styles have just changed, frills and super intense decoration don't seem to be as popular anymore outside of lingerie, from what I can tell. I dunno though I've got zero knowledge in fashion.
the decrease in costuming quality over the last 20 years has been soooo precipitous & nauseating. i’m not even talking abt marvel’s cg supersuits or anything this time, look at the fabric quality, structure, layering, character, and craftsmanship of older costumes in 102 dalmations (2000) vs cruella (2021)
ever after (1998) vs cinderella (2021)
lord of the rings (2001-2003) vs the rings of power (2022)
this trend should upset you not just because it looks cheap, but because it suggests a strong anti-art and anti-labor movement in film and tv making. don’t forget costumers are unionized

Obviously, no matter how many movies I add to the list, I know dozens of more films will be announced and released throughout the year. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is one of them. I didn’t know a thing about this flick, but it received the always interesting awards buzz, which turned it into a mandatory viewing before Christmas comes around. I went in knowing only one thing: this is Chadwick Boseman’s (Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War) last appearance after he passed away a few months ago. I really didn’t know what to expect from this Netflix’s Oscar-bait, but I was afraid that Boseman’s nomination chances were high only due to what happened in real-life instead of him truly deserving that recognition… Well, I can safely and confidently write that Boseman delivers his career-best interpretation, and it wouldn’t be unfair for him to get tons of awards posthumously. From an impeccable accent to his mind-blowing emotional range, passing through long monologues and uncut takes effortlessly, Boseman is the strong glue that holds everything in place. What seems, at first, a hangout movie (narrative without a clear central plot) turns into a character-study. Levee wants to follow his dreams, do what he does best in his own conditions and with his personal interpretation of music and soul. Boseman incorporates this character seamlessly, delivering a memorable performance that I hope will be remembered as a worthy Oscar winner if this situation ends up becoming true. Even though Boseman is the actor that shines brighter, every single one is absolutely outstanding. Viola Davis shares the main spotlight with him by representing the (real-life) iconic blues singer, Ma Rainey. To be completely honest, I didn’t know who this singer was nor how she impacted soul music. Ruben Santiago-Hudson first feature-film sc...

'Rustin' Shines A Long Overdue Spotlight On The Architect Of The March On Washington
Six decades after Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech in front of an estimated 250,000 people on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, a new Netflix film is shining a spotlight on one of the architects of the March on Washington who has largely been left out of the history books.
Directed by George C. Wolfe (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”) and written by Julian Breece and Academy Award-winner Dustin Lance Black (“Milk”), “Rustin” revisits a crucial chapter in the life of civil rights activist Bayard Rustin (played by Colman Domingo), who is best known for being a key adviser to King and organizing the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Executive produced by Michelle and Barack Obama, who posthumously awarded Rustin the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013, the buzzy biopic dramatizes the weeks leading up to the historic march and explores Rustin’s identity as an openly gay Black man torn between love and duty in the 1960s.
“I love the fact that, even the way the script is written, we don’t leave his sexuality out of it at all. It’s infused with every part of who he is,” Domingo told NBC News in a recent video interview. “He’s messy in many ways, even with his relationship dealings. He’s a real, flawed human being who’s trying to do something extraordinary, but he’s just an ordinary man. He’s trying to figure out the systems in which he lives and trying to move the needle a little bit on our humanity.”
Wolfe, an acclaimed theater director and playwright who won multiple Tony Awards for directing Tony Kushner’s “Angels in America” and his own “Bring in ’da Noise, Bring in ’da Funk” in the 1990s, has long been interested in telling stories about ordinary people who do extraordinary things. Wolfe was asked to curate an exhibit more than a decade ago at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta, where he had an opportunity to delve into the life and accomplishments of Rustin, who died in 1987. -(source: nbc news)
