Felicity Season 3 really has the dumbest fucking theme song I've ever heard on a tv show in my entire life. That sucks too, because the OG theme from the first two seasons is a whole ass mood. JJ Abrams really thought he could write a better song than the soulful acoustic stylings of the first opening. They put MONTAGES OF THE CHARACTERS LAUGHING in the opening instead of the black and white still photography. We should have known at the beginning, that JJ likes to fuck with proven successes.

sorry i left this so long! i don't think i've posted about them before so idk if you mean someone specific or just generally but anywayy. (all of these are at least 1/4 self-insert. i love that because it's like all these little people who are all me in some way)

my main one is daisy, i draw her the most because she's the easiest to draw. she's she/her panromantic ace, she has adhd and a younger (trans) sister called lilium. she loves radiohead and boygenius and big theif and ethel cain, and her favourite songs are masterpiece, no surprises, chinese satellite, voyager, american teenager and videotape. she also likes fish, books, pinterest, activism and badge making. she doesn't like climate change, change, ableism or quinoa. she's chaotic good.

pippa/pip is the second one i made. they're autistic and her special interests are jellyfish, space and the tv show everything sucks!. she's a they/she lawful good lesbian. they love tori amos, taylor swift, gracie abrams, comfy cardigans and science, and doesn't like carrots or conflict. she plays piano and violin and bass guitar, her favourite songs are pretty good year, amelie, long story short, that's so true and paper bag. she is not a morning person, and she has a cat called liesl.

avery is just a lil guy. they like that one lemony snicket poem (ikyk) gilmore girls, poppies, beetles and astronomy. they're nonbinary and trans, use they/them pronouns and are also bisexual. their twitter/threads is @/lavenderhatchets and is also a semi-well known phoebe bridgers stan account and also generally chaos. they love lucy dacus, the cranberries, phoebe bridgers and conan gray. i didn't give them an alignment but i think they're probably chaotic neutral.

lilium is (the aforementioned) sister of daisy and she's like only 7. she likes minecraft and anything purple. she doesn't like shellfish or mean people. her favourite song is lover by taylor swift and she listens to taylor with her sister's friend pip a lot. she's true good.

felix (felicity) (also felix/felicity was a castoff from when i was renaming myself) is the one that's the most like me. she/they sapphic ace, they describe themselves as the #1 boygenius obsessor. they have pink streaked hair (fun fact, i drew their hair ages ago and am only realising now that we've had the same hair for a few months) and green eyes. her favourite songs are me & my dog, cool about it and lovesong by beabadoobee. they like coconut water, peanut m&m's, the colour yellow and also pomegranate (symbolism and arizona iced tea). they play guitar and sing. no alignment yet but i'd say lawful neutral in a chaotic way or chaotic good.

Alex is a he/him unlabled sexuality trans guy. he really likes cavetown and wooly sweaters. he (unfortunately) has chronic fatigue, so he has 'tired lil guy' in every bio on everything he has. he loves musicals and drawing, and he's broken a lot of bones. his favourite songs are juno, cut your bangs by girlpool and casual by chappell roan. his favourite movies are mean girls 2024, but i'm a cheerleader and i saw the tv glow. he is lawful neutral and very kind.

thanks for asking! this really helped me think about their charachters because a lot of their traits and stuff i had stopped thinking about and now they feel a lot more rounded to me.

So i absolutely agree that we have absolutely not talked enough about Wilhelm’s snowglobe so I’m doing that now. Bear with me. 

We talked before about how the frog snowglobe represents how Wilhelm is confined in the role of prince, even more so as Crown Prince, and i think having the snowglobe shatter in ep2 is beautiful and poetic and very very necessary in telling the story. 

Following the metaphor, this is the moment when Wilhelm begins to break free from everything. To this point, we’ve already seen a few things that hint at it (ignoring his mother, his plans against August) but this is a very big turning point for Wilhelm’s story. This is the moment he sees that there are limits even he can break, where the crown will truly turn against him. He’s been burnt by the royal court before, but those moments paled in comparison. Really, sending him to Hillerska was one of the only things the royal court ever truly made him do and there was nothing physical in it. The denial, while not what he had wanted, was still technically something he was coerced into giving, not forced. 

This is the first time real force is being used against Wilhelm. 

It’s this shattering of how he had seen the world around him. Disillusionment. The walls that are holding him back are fragile. Small things are huge threats. He had threatened abdication, but aside from ignoring his mother’s call the next morning we don’t see Wilhelm actually moving to make it reality. He was having a breakdown, I don’t think Wilhelm even truly believed in his own threats. But he’s seeing now how serious it is to the royal court, that they would take these steps to try and prevent something he hadn’t actually meant. 

[Side note: the one time Wilhelm does consider actually abdicating is for Simon.]

It’s in this moment that Wilhelm agrees to go to therapy, something that we know has a huge effect on him by the end of the season. From here, we see him improving. He starts to step back, assess what’s happening around him, and slowly he starts seeing the bigger picture. We see his growth after this moment as he begins to learn to see other people’s perspectives (Felice’s, after their kiss, when he takes a moment to think about what she said, about how she felt. Simon’s, as he tries to understand where Simon is coming from, and he strives to give Simon options and to let him in and let him know what’s happening.) 

It comes together in the end, when he yells at his mother. “It’s not enough! Can’t you see that?” And she can’t. Kristina still clutches to the visage of the crown. But Wilhelm has seen it broken, has finally come to understand that what’s underneath that is what’s important.

2023: Bryon Rides Anxiety’s Peaks and Valleys

This year really tossed us all around like a gigantic blender, swirling everything together into a writhing mass of fine particles. It’s been quite the ride. Thankfully amidst the chaos, there was music. The vast cornucopia of exhilarating sounds wound itself around the many genres, and the dozens of releases spread across these twelve months. It provided the healing salve to combat the bedlam lying in the realm beyond our ears.

For me, live music in 2023 was about quality over quantity. The two shows that affected me most this past year were aligned along the theme of reunion. I’ve been a fan of Yo La Tengo since high school but had strayed from the band’s past few releases. This Stupid World brought me back into their universe. I jumped at the chance to see them in Toronto; it had been decades since I last saw them play live. They played two sets, one soft and one loud, and they didn’t disappoint. As an added bonus, I got to meet fellow Dusted writer Ian Mathers at the show. Toronto post-rockers Do Make Say Think played their first show in six years in March, around my birthday. I wasn’t going to miss it. They unleashed an enticing set of music, playing material from across their entire catalog with intense energy. It was hypnotic and exhilarating. They were also jovial, joking about the current career prospects of the band members. It was a fun night.

Many perennial favorite groups and artists released excellent albums this year. Yo La Tengo returned to their early Matador form with This Stupid World, while The Clientele expanded into new, lush and uncanny territory on I’m Not There Anymore. Califone’s Villagers pushed the band’s adventurous, bluesy roots-rock into an experimental wonderland. Bill Orcutt released Jump On It, revealing his softer side. The Live in Brooklyn 2011 set from Sonic Youth found the group trying out songs they rarely played live, as they wound down their decades-long existence. Joshua Abrams’ Natural Information Society showed that they’re not done unleashing mesmerizing sonic salvos with Since Time is Gravity. Finally, Daniel Bachman continued to push his singular brand of Americana toward the outer limits with When the Roses Come Again, and Intercepted Message found Osees covering Cisco Systems’ telephone hold music. It was a good year for long-beloved institutions.

New to me this year was the band Famous Mammals and their polyglot post-punk album Instant Pop Expressionism Now! I returned to it time and time again; it was the soundtrack to my late summer and my autumn. Digging deeper into the San Francisco band’s origins, I discovered a previously hidden world of Bay Area post-punk, populated by a tight-knit scene that originated with The World, which would fracture into Famous Mammals, Non Plus Temps, Blues Lawyer, Children Maybe Later and others. The LP in question blends elements of Swell Maps, Young Marble Giants and Television Personalities, aligning with those outfits’ brashness, naivete, and wry sense of humor. It was at the top of my list in 2023 and led me to explore the SF underground further. That digging led me to Will York’s encyclopedic tome Who Cares Anyway? York gives an in-depth perspective to the goings on in the Bay Area from the post-hippie origins of its punk scene to the self-destructive chaos of Flipper and the visionary artistry behind acts such as Mr. Bungle, Caroliner, Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, et cetera. He also investigates the unique personalities that comprised the scene such as Brandon Kearney, Gregg Turkington, Seymour Glass, Barbara Manning, and Joe Pop-o-Pie. The book is worth exploring if you’re at all interested in any of the names I mentioned.

I always highlight at least one Canadian release, and this year I really got into the self-titled debut from Toronto duo You Can Can. The pairing of sound artist Andrew Zukerman and vocalist Felicity Williams is the perfect comingling of the familiar and the otherworldly. Alien soundscapes intercept beautifully crafted song forms, with synth squiggles and abstract patterns writhing alongside folk music signifiers. Let’s hope that You Can Can have more music in store for us in 2024 and beyond.

here is the thing about me and j.j. abrams. i never watched lost. i do not care about star wars or star trek or whatever nerd shit he’s up to now. tbh i don’t like sci-fi that much. but you know when you’re a girl in high school and you have no friends and you’re obsessed with a tv show but you don’t have anyone to talk to about it and it’s the early 2000s and you don’t even have livejournal??? well imagine if you had a baby sister who thought you were the absolute coolest person in the world and would do anything to hang out with you and watch your show with you and hear your endless thoughts about it. well, america, that girl was my big sister and that baby sister was me and that tv show was alias. i was raised on alias. and so basically alias is the reason i am who i am today and watching felicity is insane. deeply resonating with the very core of my being. i am spiritually connected to keri russell’s hair.
