An Album That Helped Me: April Fools

Basically since 2019-2020, when anyone asked me my favorite band, I'd say The Scary Jokes. Sure, they're not as mainstream as some of my other favs like My Chemical Romance or The Beatles, but oh well. And if someone asked my fav album (either from TSJ or in general) I'd say this one; April Fools. The balance of happy sounding vocals and instrumentals with deeper messages like drug use, heartbreak, liminality, and erm... icicles, drew me in the first time I heard it. But even not talking about the vocals or messages, the songs are just catchy. I commonly find myself going back to this album, whether the OG from 2019 or the 2021 remaster. When the remaster came out, I spent the whole day listening to it and marveling over how beautiful it sounded, how crisp it was. I tend to binge the 2019 version, sit in silence for a few minutes, and then binge the remaster just to experience that joy and awe I felt the first time I ever heard it. I've even showed this album to my aunties, mum, and friends. It really is my favorite album, and my favorite songs are Catabolic Seed, Pink Smoke, A Mannequin Adrift, and Toynbee Tiles. But, unfortunately, the story of my affection for this album takes a turn for the melancholy here. I always thought my life wasn't harsh enough for me to have a comfort album. Sure, I had songs that calmed me down, like Sandy Farina's version of Strawberry Fields Forever, but never a whole album that I could use to cope. Until now. My Nani passed away today. My first instinct is to say I wasn't that close to her, so I can push away that sadness and move on, but I can't do that. I literally started learning Spanish to make her proud, since she was Panamanian. I kinda don't wanna keep learning Spanish, since it reminds me of her. But, I can't stop now. Just a few days ago, my parents went to visit her in the hospital, and even though my brother and I were left in my grandparent's house, Nani told my parents to tell me that she was so proud of me for continuing to learn Spanish. I always hoped I could have a conversation with her in Spanish one day, but now I can't. Sure, I can talk with my godfather/her husband, but it just isn't the same. He's proud of me too, but it feels different, you know? I can only end this post off with a lyric from the album; "My world has turned so cold, but I won't cry... because icicles don't soften when they die, so why should I? Why should I...?"

Oh, I have SO MANY suggestions for this bug. But, if I want to go with the most thematic one, I will go with Land of All by Woodkid.

From the perspective of Hollow, to me this song embodies its duty to Hallownest and her people. To saving it, to stopping the infection. The love it has for its people and its purpose. I will deliberately ignore the lyric about the father for this interpretation. "I will fall for you"... quite literally. It will die for Hallownest.

Catabolic Seed by the scary jokes greatly encapsulates my post-canon Hollow character arc.

It can be them speaking to a myriad of people. To Hallownest itself. It will protect you, protect Hallownest, even though Hallownest and everyone it did nothing to protect them from the cruelty their entire life and existance was.

It will continue to do that, even after failing. Even while it tries to hide from that failure. Even while it is enraged with everyone who failed it in turn. Because it loves the world. It loves Hallownest. It will protect you, even though you won't protect it.

some manner of poltergeist. she would be so annoying as a ghost... IF ghosts don't count then i guess vampire but one of those genuinely kind of freaky ones

i don't really know anything about muppets i'm afraid... i looked at the List of Muppets wikipedia article and none of them seem to fit though so i guess he is the one human

Ok so The Scary Jokes is a band (1 transgender and a dream) who describes their sound as “indie bedroom synthpop” which means nothing because genres are fake and don’t mean anything BUT the music is very good. It’s kind of beep boopy and very gay and I really love how their voice sounds in the quite minimal production of the first 3 albums.

If you want to start with them I would recommend listening to BURN PYGMALION!!!!!! A Better Guide to Romance. Listening to albums front to back is my preferred way to listen generally but even if it’s not for you I’d highly recommend front to back because OF THE REALLY GOOD MUSICAL PACING. I will die for this album this album is my religion this album is the one album I will never stop preaching about. Its sounds fuckifn incredible and has songwriting designed to maximize the desire to be a lesbian werewolf and claw and bite into someone. It’s a narrative album about the relationship between Sylvia, an up and coming movie star, and Jeanine, a journalist who has been working to boost Sylvia’s career. They are both dealing with shit from past relationships and are insane in different ways (Jeanine is obsessed) and it all goes bad. The pov of the songs switches a lot and honestly it’s probably better if you just listen for the music and the feeling the first time through but you got me on my autism and it’s not slowing down. The tracks hop from slow and kind of angsty too teeth rottingly fluffy with a distinct feeling that everything is about to go wrong to a series of knife twists that leave me feral every time. There’s so few songs that communicate the ache, the need, the kind request to be seen and heard and the terrible hunger it hides, the tired anger, the feeling of spiraling as well as the tracks on this album.

I love the album so much and to pick favorites from it is genuinely hard. Sylvia’s just a dying is incredible, it sounds like falling through an anxiety void filled with glitter and the knife twisting lyrics being punctuated with “after all I’m just a friend” HERRREGGHGFGGGV IM CRAZY IM CRAZY. Pygmalion makes me want to tear into someone more than I already do and Starstruck is the ultimate kicking my feet and giggling I’m going to explode song. Admire the Architecture is short but it sounds so good and the lyrics are very focused on the narrative and it really draws you into the characters for the consecutive series of gut punches that is the back half of the album. No Leverage/No Pleasure oh my god oh my GOD, if you listen to nothing else listen to this PLEASE. THIS SONG IS THE HUNGER, IT IS SUCH INTENSE LOVE AND DESIRE THAT YOU ARE SO CONSUMED YOU CAN DO NOTHING BUT CONSUME. Crushed Out on Soda Beach makes me cry. It’s an apology, it’s defeat, it’s beautiful and it’s only a start but it is a start and whatever brought us here is gone. And then the floating away with Bets against the void. HHHHRGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH ITS GOOD. THE LESBAINS!!!!!!

There’s also 3 OTHER ALBUMS which are also VERY GOOD. April Fools is their most popular project (you may have heard the track Icicles from it) it is not narrative and not about a specific relationship but it’s a lot of SAPPHIC AND TRANSGENDER HARD TIMES. If you listen to it I would highly recommend the 2021 version simply because of the fuller sound and slight refinements. It is full of bangers with Blood from the Concrete, Catabolic Seed, and Night at the movies being my personal favorite. I’d highly recommend this album to anyone who likes Burn Pygmalion!!!!!! A Better Guide to Romance or people who listen to both Toby Fox and Mitski.

Bad at math is their first project and much more low key and personal. All of the songs are quite hit or miss, my personal favorites are Poison Ivy and Hold Yourself Tight. Retinal Bloom is their most recent project, it sounds good but the production kid of puts the lyrics in the background in a way I like less. It’s much more soundscape focused and does that well but it’s not my personal taste.

Hmm Ive seen a few songs I think tagently fit but none that fit her perfectly (though I might just be holding them to the standard of Animal lol)

Theres a few songs I draw her alongside, Brutus by The Buttress I think works nicely with her, same with Hell’s coming with me by a Poor Man’s Poision and Animal Cannibal which I think fits if were coming from a vengence/anger angle.

The end of an Asterisk by Los Campensinos! I think fits nicely as well, I think about Amane as a footnote in god’s plan a Normal Amount. Still on the fence on Catabolic Seed by The Scary Jokes…I think it works but also fits Muu more so like…

Curses by The Crane Wives I think is nice but I think that song choice only makes sense to me so…”Make a mercy out of me” fits fantastically though.

Rain by Jack Stauber isnt a song but it fits Very Well, Today Today is a song and I think it does work (though that might be because it has teardrops in the lyrics lol.)
