So I found this song on ARTV’s best songs of 2020 video and have choked up in tears every time I’ve heard it since.

With a soft, tender introduction that builds into an apocalyptic climax wall of sound, I think it speaks to themes of loss, of things outside your control, and how you process change.

ANALYZATION MODE START-0:

never stated this anywhere but in a friendchat, but Enhypen consistently uses red/blue (coloring, and also the words in their lyrics) to strengthen their VAMPIRE-IDOLs theme.

In their 'Give-taken' MV when they took a pill, I didn't fully think about it till their B-Side boyfriend song, and that's when I was like "Wait.... why does this.....remind me of....

THE MATRIX!"

TLDR; red (red pill) is supposed to represent "the willingness to learn a potentially unsettling or life-changing truth"

While blue (blue pill) = remaining in contented ignorance

Anyways, so the song starting with 1) Shot of Jay in all blue with the blue filter, AND blue background --> then transitioning to them all dancing in a blue room, with a blue floor, wearing blue, and the very first lyric of the song being:

"Wake up, open your eyes now" Like Jay is saying 'hey, we're not in reality rn. We aren't accepting the truth. But 'Cynical' is also written uNDER HIS EYE, so perhaps Jay is starting to question this 'perfect, dream reality' they're stuck in.

Guess.... keep this in mind as I continue blogging this nonsense.

Also keep in mind that Vampires literally represent temptation; while idols represent this ideal 'dream' and 'happy wonderful life' when it actually really limits and restricts their own personal freedoms (IN REALITY)

“this time my Holy Ghost is hovering over me and I’m passed out on the floor” next is MoBo’s Holy Ghost

For me, Holy Ghost is already a hard listen but if I heard it a couple of years ago it would’ve decimated me, from the band’s past records Holy Ghost immediately sets itself apart with being (imo) more mature in dealing with loss and recovery over singing about young love

even without the context provided by the documentary (cw for suicide and death), I find Holy Ghost a musical gut punch especially with the opening track which bares the same name as the album. The strength of that punch only gets worse after watching Tripping In The Dark imo. Also, the inner sleeve of the record has “For papa” front and centre which decimates me, I lost a grandparent who meant the wolrd to me a few years ago and Jake Ewald’s lyrcism really hits home to me I consider Jake a very adapt lyricist, pretty much a writer with a guitar accomapying his words, and it find it particularly powerful that someone who can take even mundane, run-of-the-mill issues like young love and make them interesting and poetic screams the loudest he ever has on a MoBo song “what do I really want to say?” on Notes To Self is fucking gut wrenching
