I researched where they were, but still nice bc whenever I forget she kinda guides me to them. I think this could be interesting for her and her guild's dynamic bc if ANY of them remember-- she'd be really excited.

Comet 13P/Olbers, 2024-06-28
Not a paradox, Comet 13P/Olbers is returning to the inner Solar System after 68 years. The periodic, Halley-type comet will reach its next perihelion or closest approach to the Sun on June 30 and has become a target for binocular viewing low in planet Earth’s northern hemisphere night skies. But this sharp telescopic image of 13P is composed of stacked exposures made on the night of June 25. It easily reveals shifting details in the bright comet’s torn and tattered ion tail buffeted by the wind from an active Sun, along with a broad, fanned-out dust tail and slightly greenish coma. The frame spans over two degrees across a background of faint stars toward the constellation Lynx.

Jones-Emberson 1 Image Credit & Copyright: Team OURANOS, (Jean-Baptiste Auroux, Jean Claude Mario, Mathieu Guinot & Matthieu Tequi)
Explanation: Planetary nebula Jones-Emberson 1 is the death shroud of a dying Sun-like star. It lies some 1,600 light-years from Earth toward the sharp-eyed constellation Lynx. About 4 light-years across, the expanding remnant of the dying star's atmosphere was shrugged off into interstellar space, as the star's central supply of hydrogen and then helium for fusion was depleted after billions of years. Visible near the center of the planetary nebula is what remains of the stellar core, a blue-hot white dwarf star. Also known as PK 164 +31.1, the nebula is faint and very difficult to glimpse at a telescope's eyepiece. But this deep image combining over 12 hours of exposure time does show it off in exceptional detail. Stars within our own Milky Way galaxy as well as background galaxies across the universe are scattered through the clear field of view. Ephemeral on the cosmic stage, Jones-Emberson 1 will fade away over the next few thousand years. Its hot, central white dwarf star will take billions of years to cool.

The Intergalactic Wanderer, C25 // Alicia Rossiter
This globular cluster, NGC 2419, is located about 275,000 light years from the Sun in the constellation of Lynx, the Lynx. It has been nicknamed the "Intergalactic Wanderer" when it was originally thought to not be bound to the Milky Way. It has later been found to truly be bound to the Milky Way, although its orbit takes it further away from the center of the galaxy beyond the Magellanic Clouds.

There are some hints about the cultural comparisons that are being drawn, when examining the names themselves.
"Loux" is the relatively simple one - it is a German surname meaning "Lynx" with the connotation of having good eyesight. In astronomy, the Lynx constellation was named as such not necessarily because it looks like a cat, but because a person would need to be "lynx-eyed" to see it.
So already there is one connection here - before becoming "Godfrey" Hoarah Loux was someone who could clearly see the stars. Maybe he did not personally practice sorcery like the astrologers/glintstone sorcerers, but was at least somewhat aware of the influence of the stars on the Lands Between.
"Hoarah" is a trickier name to deconstruct. "Hoar" has an immediate linguistic connection to "hoarfrost" (frost deposited on branches from water vapour) and this connection is supported by the Hoarfrost Stomp skill attached to an axe - Godfrey's weapon of choice. The "Hoar" part of the word is archaic English for white or grey haired, and seems to derived from German simply meaning "hair". However, "Hoarah" has some resemblance to "Howrah" - a Bengali city (in present day India since British colonization) reportedly named for its location on a "Haor", which is a Bengali word for a seasonally flooded back-swamp where fine silts and clays are deposited. Which altogether may place the Badlands as a desert area that is seasonally flooded. And may indicate that even Hoarah Loux was an assumed name taken after gaining a reputation for being that "perceptive old white-haired warrior" - the younger Nepheli is certainly darker of hair.
"Godfrey" is an English Christian name meaning "God's peace". So the connotation of modern British colonization is not out of the question - in particular there are reasons why a name associated with a Christian nation overwriting one associated with a majority Hindu population would be consistent with the esoteric astrology themes of Elden Ring. But also the name "Godfrey" dates to the 11th Century BCE and the timeframe of a much earlier form of colonization and pillaging - the Crusades. It altogether seems to be hinting at a sequence of a population being converted to a new faith system (i.e. Roman Catholicism/Church of Marika), and subsequently being called to "take back the Holy Land" from another population that developed from the same root faith system in a different direction (I.e. Muslims/the opposition to Marika).
Nepheli gets shades of this as well, as her name seems to possibly originate from a combination of the Greek "Nephele" meaning "she from the clouds" and the Hebrew "Nephelim" meaning "the fallen ones" (or half-human half-angel hybrids). Through the intermediary of Rome, that's basically the origin of the Roman Catholic church in one name - a combination of rituals and teachings taken from the Hebrew and Greek religious belief and philosophies.
Let me start off this post with a bold statment. Godfrey is the single biggest political statement in Elden Ring.
Tumblr media
Yes, this guy. The big buff wrestler man with grey hair and lion Stand (jojo!)
Because his name isn't Godfrey, it's Hoarah Loux. But to along with his culture, he had to seperate himself from his own name. Hoarah Loux was the chieftain of a group of people whose home is only reffered to as "The Badlands" before encountering Marika. Now we don't have much on specific details of how their meeting went, but considering Marika and the Golden Order in game are responsible for either the subjugation or genocide of multiple groups, (Misbegotten, Zamor, Trolls, Fire Giants, Omen, and Albinauric.) Its not unreasonable to assume her meeting with Hoarah Loux and his people was not treated as a meeting of equals. But mutliple mentions of this group he led mention respecting power and strength, so even an unfair agreement between them could have been fostered due to Marika's power as a goddess. Hence why Hoarah Loux had to shed his "savage" name and culture to become a "proper" lord for Marika as Godfrey. Similar acts were commited by the United States to indigenous tribes of the America's and to slaves brought here from Africa. They were forced to go by "good christian names" in order to seperate them from their own cultures.
Tumblr media
In game, a starting class for the player is Hero. They are specified as having descended from the badlands chieftain. Now whether that's literal like the image of Nepheli in it's example art, or metaphorical in that they come from his tribe/cultural group isn't clear....because I can't read the original Japanese. But what I can read are context clues.
Tumblr media
All of the Hero classes equipment contain a line about how they shun excessive adornments. But in all his depictions as Godfrey, he looks very adorned, with his massive cape and fine clothing intermixed with his armor. Something he removes when entering his second phase.
Tumblr media
When you bring him down to 50% health, Godfrey tears away his spirit bound companion Serosh, his oppulent armor and clothing, and even his axe. He offers to and I quote, "fight you as Hoarah Loux, Warrior!" And his new boss title above his healthbar reflects that, no longer reading Godfrey, First Elden Lord. This means even he knows that Godfrey is not him, he is Hoarah Loux a man whose people outside of Nepheli and possibly the player...aren't shown in game. There is no location in game where they are, or historically were.
And considering prior to the games start, Hoarah Loux and a large group of people who "Lost the grace of gold" were banished from the lands between to wage war eternally outside of it...I think most of those people were the people of Hoarah Loux's culture. We learn that Marika made Hoarah Loux the Elden Lord in order for him to act as her general, and it would only make sense for his troops to be comprised of the people who came from the same warrior culture he did. That's why I think they are called the "Hero" class. Hoarah Loux's people fought at the front lines of the Golden Order's conquests, became hero's to the common folk and once their use was over, they were banished alongside their leader. This is similar to how in the United States, we call our soldiers "Hero's" but then a disproportionate number of it's soldiers come from it's territories and not it's actual states. Locations that lack government representation and aren't considered US citizens. Such as the people from the American territory of Samoa, Guam, and Peurto Rico.
Because Badlands isn't a location inside of the map we play, and it doesn't fit the way other locations are named. It's a title for a specific type of biome, like Taiga or Bayou. Hoarah Loux is the leader of a people who were subjucated, used as soldiers, seen as too savage to be allowed to keep their names and culture (in Hoarah Loux's case), and then sent away as soon as they were inconvenient to keep around. They don't even get the dignity of having the land qthey hailed from remebered as anything more than a geographical feature.
So to reiterate. The old man who power bombs your character while shirtless is the most political statement in the whole game. If you know what your looking at.

Hello! I understand that naming characters can be difficult, I also understand that when we create AU's in which a character is trans or hiding and need to create a deadname/fake name it can be a struggle. HOWEVER-
When it comes to naming Black OC's or giving characters like Sirius and Regulus genderbent/deadnames I will not take any excuses for things like "Siriana" and "Regina". That is about the only family in canon who already HAS a naming convention, and yes, I realise not all of them follow it. However most DO.
So! For your perusal, I have taken the liberty of spending two weeks of my life scrolling Wikipedia to find a list of constellations, star names and star nicknames that could be used instead! Please use them I beg of you.
As a helpful guide, any names already used in canon are starred. Any names that MIGHT be used in canon (it's been ages since I've read the actual books, forgive me if I've missed any) are double starred.
