i want to torture lynn for fun

read the first chapter of the grief complex a few days ago and i can't stop thinking about it. i love how much characterization was packed into just the first chapter-- yr usage of colors is also sooo unbelievably gorgeous. i really like cam and lynn both, i'm very interested to see more of them (i have listened to both their playlists several times and i must say.. excellent song choices. pinback!!!) does lynn make any friends at raves? what does he do for work?

Thank you! I keep seeing iterations of the "can't stop thinking about it" kind and it's so exciting that this has resonated with some people so much. The playlists were all dane, though! I only suggested two of the songs that wound up on Cam's playlist (Eels + Guided by Voices). You didn't ask, but those playlists are diegetic. Cam's was a present (he's not really the music type...) and Lynn's was self made.

Lynn considered many professions before going to college. He was talked out of most of them by both his therapist and father. These include:

Nursing: Lynn is too temperamentally sensitive for it; poor outcomes would drastically affect him in a way he'd take with him outside the workplace, and besides that... belligerent patients would hurt his feelings too much! Nursing also requires too much quick-thinking + an ability to adapt to/perform in high-stress situations. Lynn is not smart, nor is he the type of guy you should depend on in case of an emergency; he doubts himself too much. Patients would have loved him, though. He is very sweet.

Programming/SWE: while comparably more knowledgeable in computers than his peers at the time, lynn has always been very poor with language/grammar and would not do well in a job that requires writing, even if it was conceptually understood as "writing with (a lot of) math." he has been in remedial reading classes from when he finally got an IEP in elementary school through college graduation.

Joining the Clergy: lynn is not incredibly religious, but he did briefly consider being a priest. this was more of a passing thought for him. it seemed like it would be nice, helping people like that. his faith has fluctuated and changed throughout his life, largely depending on who he's spending the most time around, but he's always been fond of the social aspect of religion.

Lynn makes tons of friends at raves! He's very social online, especially for his era, and he has a little long-distance friend group that he often links up with at raves. He's also been known to DJ on occasion...he's quite good at it.

By day, though, he is a junior accountant at a local oil company. A little less "cool", possibly morally debatable, but his bills are paid and his apartment is quite nice.

I had dane answer this because i never really watched my little pony. his response and image below:

if lynn was a pony he'd be a lanky unicorn with a sine / square wave cutie mark. he'd have a really stupid name like Syntheshyzer or something like that. lynn wouldn't watch my little pony but if he did he'd think it was a cute kids show because he loves stupid crap for babies.

since you didn't ask about cam i'm going to tell you more about him as punishment. if cam was a pony he'd be a short miserable earth pony he'd live in ponyville in a secluded little horsie house near the everfree forest. he would have minor success doing freelance work as a photographer for the pony newspaper but bizarrely his cutie mark has nothing to do with this. would still kill animals in his free time. he'd be named something inherently demeaning like Tar Pit or Lost Lenscap. Lenscap Missing. he'd be a weird horse no one would like him. bronies saw him in the background and gave him a name and now they write fanfiction about him maiming the other ponies. cam would never watch my little pony.

Lynn is irritatingggg, I don't hate him but like I get the feeling he makes himself a target. He's the problem...I guess that's believable though there are lots of really emotional people out there like that.

I've got a few other messages with the same sentiment but I can't say I understand, myself. He's had a rough enough go without your help… dane thinks he's annoying, though.

not that far into the chapter yet but so far this is such a wonderful piece of work to read and look at! i'm enamored by your selections with color and how you choose to depict the characters. lynn reminds me a lot of a deer with the way his eyes and hands look and just his general demeanor...a startled baby horse of a man. would love to put him in a bear trap

the accuracy of your presumptions is on kind of a bell curve. generously, i think we could say you're a little more than half right. some of these are relatively close enough to what's coming up that I'm quite intrigued. would love to hear any more ideas you've got.

i can confirm though that lynn does not wear pajama sets...he's not a cartoon character! for the most part he just wears old T-shirts (typically large on him; many purchased in late 90s) and either pajama pants or boxers depending on the weather.

just started reading the grief complex and i will probably ramble about it later when im actually done w it (sorry) but i am SO curious about what influenced your colour choices esp for lynn. idk, your work is always extremely beautiful and dynamic but lynn always seems to stand out to me- or maybe thats confirmation bias. the colours and palletes you use for your art in this work particularly have me so so intrigued. i need to tattoo this stuff on the back of my eyelids.

When we were conceptualizing the design for lynn, both he and cam were still going to be flesh toned. at this point I was still extremely displeased with my attempts at cam (who was conceived first) so for a change of pace I shifted to try and draw Lynn for the first time. because I wanted this to be a very low-stakes and low-stress image I utilized my one secret trick I will share with you, which is that I took a very old illustration from my favorite onceler artist and adjusted the hues and crap on it to color pick and paint with for fun. And in this "for fun" drawing, he ended up being purple with orange hair. When Dane saw this I said something like yeah I'll give him human skin at a later date I just wanted to mess around blah blah. but he demanded i keep him purple so we did because I mean he looked really good purple I couldn't very well argue with that.

I then naturally decided that purple would look good with the green shade we picked for cam... purple and black are often paired up alongside green and orange for halloween. in an initial discussion we talked about how they should look a bit out of place because of this. griefcon takes place in early / mid November, so we thought they ought to look a little like halloween decorations left out past the appropriate season.

While their colors were a bit coincidental, the color of pretty much everything else is chosen deliberately. Some of these choices are symbolic and others are quite literal...the orange sky happens to be both!

Here is the aforementioned "initial" drawing of Lynn. Unlike cam who I continued to struggle with visibly until partway through the first chapter, Lynn kind of came out exactly as he was supposed to be on the first try.
