Wizard School Mysteries: Book 1 Side Characters
Ok I'm 90% sure I've shared all of these sketches before but for funsies, let's look at some of the minor characters from book 1 of Wizard School Mysteries.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We'll start with the four elemental experts of the AAAM's teaching staff. While I generally use the four humors theory as, like, a surface level detail for my students, I tried to make the four teachers who specialize in the elements really live up to it, witch each teacher sporting the personality traits associated with the humor that corresponds to their elements. Lymf Splenik is a sadsack melancholic, Sulfrous Bladgal is cantankerous as befitting a choleric, Arturiel Haemoglobe is free-spirited and sanguine, and Mewcosa Glycocet is sweet but extremely emotional, as a phlegmatic should be.
Their names, of course, play on this too. Mewcosa is a play on Mucus, Sulfrous's last name, Bladgal, is a corruption of "Gall bladder," which makes yellow bile, Artery = Arturiel and Hemoglobin = Haemoglobe, and Lymf = lymph nodes while spenik is a corruption of "spleen," which makes black bile.
Tumblr media
Professor Alys Evelina, teacher of Sorcery Studies, ends up serving as a secondary antagonist for books 1 and 2. Given how wild I went with making a lot of these side wizards explicitly monstrous, I decided to make Alys look excessively normal, even attractive, to not play into the "ugly = evil" trope. Don't read too much into the Alice in Wonderland motiff - while Alys and Alice both share a general disdain for things that are don't make sense to them, Alice Liddel is a much more likable character.
Tumblr media
We don't get to see much of Alys's rival, Broomhilda Siegfried, but I still wanted to put some effort into her design anyway. She's meant to visually contrast Alys in the ways that Conjuration contrasts to Sorcery - notably, she's a lot shorter and hides her face, to go with the fact that Conjurers are kind of looked down upon by sorcerers. She's not keen on how her magic is viewed as the "lesser" of the two main ways to be a wizard.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They might not all get named, but we do see a lot of the non-educator staff in the first two books as well. Astrae Bygonn, the bugbear who runs the AAAM's Lost and Found, plays a pretty important role for how little screen time he gets. Esmer the gargoyle is named, while Quasi and Modo go uncredited in their roles as the two gargoyles working the school dance that starts the climax of Book 1. I think Ralda might only have showed up in book 2, but what the hell let's include her here anyway. And of course the janitorial homunculi are always on the fringers, being gloppy, helpful little guys maintaining all the school's functions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though they don't feature heavily in the story, both Ambrosio Medina (the alchemy professor) and Curdletongue (the prophecy professor) have named cameos in book 1, and they'll have slightly more important roles later on. Ambrosio is specifically meant to resemble Vincent Price, as I wanted him to have that charming yet slimy quality to him that Price so often brought to his roles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wanted the school to feel full, so I had my friends in the writers workshop discord I'm in pitch loose concepts for wizard students so I could have, like, a few dozen to pick from whenever I needed a background extra. Eventually we sorted them all loosely into the minor arcana of Tarot, and then expanded it to include some of the arcana from Minchiate, a card game very similar to Tarot that might be a parody of it? We were having fun making wizard students, what can I say.
Mugre Repellus was pitched by @bugcthulhu while Bartholomew Crawson was pitched by @dragonzzilla, and both of them went the extra mile to do some concept art too, which I adapted into these designs. They were two of the earliest spare wizard students we made, and we grew a bit attached to them - and since they both had claws on their arms, they were unofficially named "the claw gang" despite only having two members. Then, because it was fun, I made Shere Statchell to be their third member, the Jessie to their Team Rocket, and the Claw Gang became a sort of quirky trio who we kept making fun side stories for while working on the rest of the Spare Wizard Kids.
The joke was fun enough to keep going, to the point where I've made them recurring background extras and cameo characters in the series. What can I say, I love the Claw Gang.
Tumblr media
Of course, another reason I needed a big ol' bucket of Spare Wizard students is that this is a mystery series, and mysteries need victims. I warned all my friends sending me pitches not to get too attached, because some of these kids were gonna die.
I'm a firm believer that a character's death should serve a purpose, though. You can kill a random one-off character for a gag, but if a character actually has, like, stuff going on, their death should have some weight to it. And book 2 needed at least one death that we felt - a side character who we liked enough to be sad to see go.
I picked Gabriev because his concept pitch - a wizard who also wants to be a chivalric knight - felt easy to make likable very quickly. Possibly a bit of personal bias - I'm a suck for knights in shining armor - but all you really need to do is make him nice and profess his desire to be a hero who goes out and does good, and suddenly that untimely death he's facing seems tragic.
Buuuut, if you do that too hurriedly, it'll be obvious he's set up to die - akin to having an old character say "I'm two days away from retirement" in a monster movie. Gabriev had to be seeded subtly, so audiences think he might have a future ahead of him.
So I put him in book 1, as a nice but not terribly prominent background extra in one of the main classes the kids attend in it, so readers might remember him and assume he's just a recurring extra like the Claw Gang. Ain't I devious?
Gabriev Zelgad's design and name is another Slayers reference. His armor is based on Gourry Gabriev (who is also obviously the source of his first name), and his last name is just another Slayers character, Zelgadis, without the "is." Like Gourry, he's a beautiful blond young man who's a bit of a ditz, and like Zelgadis, he suffers horribly tragedy.
Tumblr media
Before I started the Spare Wizard Student project, I made a handful of supporting cast wizard students based on alternative names for various Major Arcana cards. Liam O'Sullivan here is based on The Lust, which is what Aleister Crowley renamed The Strength to in his Tarot deck, because of course he would, the horny old bastard. I initially didn't want to use that as a prompt because, like, what the fuck would that character end up being, WSM's take on Mineta? But then one of my friends joked I could just make him another take of the running gag I have in my TTRPG campaigns of introducing side characters who are deeply unflattering caricatures of myself that inexplicably end up in relationships with hot, terrifying goth women, and I smiled wickedly and said, "Oh you dumb bastard, that's canon now."
Tumblr media
...which ended up being a godsend, because it gave me a way to introduce The Queen of Night, a minor character who's nonetheless important to book 1's mystery, as romancing her is the goal of the true antagonist. Sometimes torturing a specific part of your audience accidentally leads to a useful story beat.
Tumblr media
Mr. Mackers is another minor fairy character who I wanted to use to show that Midgaheim does not work on the "Seelies = good fairies and Unseelies = bad fairies" trope, and also that it doesn't follow the "all fairies are explicitly evil eldritch horrors" trope that's becoming increasingly common as a "more true to the myths" approach. The mythic Nuckelavee is explicitly evil, to be fair, but not all fairies are, and I figured taking a fairy that's popular in internet culture for being so damn creepy and monstrous and having it be a relatively nice guy was a good way to subvert the modern expectations of what fairies should be - and try and stay true to the general mythological approach to fairies, which is that fairies are complex, not just good or evil.
Tumblr media
Finally, we have good ol' Lornwig Kayjay, no relation to any children's book authors who decided to be figureheads for hategroups that specifically bully trans people. My rough concept for Lornwig was "that kid you get in at least one college class a semester who deliberately antagonizes the professor and every other student in class," because dear god you always get at least one class with a That Kid in it. The worst I ever endured was my class on Environmental Studies, because we had THREE That Kids in there. My second worst was the graduate class I took on Medieval Literature About Hell, because despite my best efforts, I was the That Kid of that class. It's a weird phenomenon.
As pre-writing chugged along and a certain children's book author became more prominently deranged, I decided Lornwig could get some theming outside of her role as a That Kid. And, you know, she's not the only That Kid I have planned. There's different flavors of That Kid, you know.
While Lornwig's role as a minor antagonist doesn't leave a lot of room for depth, I tried to give her a consistent philosophy behind her douchebaggery. She likes order and categorization, and things fitting into neat and tidy groups that you can sort into "Good" and "Bad" categories. That's a very human mindset - not a good one, but a very human one nonetheless. And she lives in a world of dangerous magical monsters, she does have some reasons to be scared and paranoid.
But mostly, she's That Kid.
Next time: minor characters of book 2!

Reblogging because this is very dear to my heart.
A few years ago our at the time 6 month old kitten suddenly stopped eating. Up until then he had been a bottomless pit so we immediately took him to the vet and had bloodwork done. The vet told us to hope for a serious bacterial infection because if it was viral it would be FIP and that was a death sentence.
In my gut I think I knew it wasn't bacterial so even though we were supposed to wait and see if the antibiotics worked, I dove into the internet. Like we feared the week of antibiotics did nothing. I syringe fed him the entire week because he wouldn't eat himself, which kept his weight up and helped save his life. Despite this he weighed less than half of what he did only a month before.
At first all sites said the same thing, FIP was a death sentence, a terrible way to die. It would be kinder to put him down now. I think at that point I kept going out of sheer desperate stubborn denial. He was only 6 months, he couldn't die yet, not that young. It wasn't fair! But then I found forums and fb groups and they linked me to research articles. They told me there was a drug. A drug that worked. I just wasn't allowed to get it to save my boy's life. Stubborn denial turned into anger and despair into determination. I REFUSED to let my baby die without a fight. I got in touch with a local group. I asked questions, read research papers, discussed pros and cons. Everyone was so helpful and supportive, urging me to just give it a chance. That afternoon I went to the vet, like I said his weight had plummeted and he now had a huge lymf lump in his groin. He looked like a used dishrag and behaved like one too. She was talking about giving us a few days to say goodbye when I interrupted her to ask about the medicine. She had never heard of it and was (understandibly) VERY sceptical. I did just tell her I wanted to use illegal black market meds from china that I learned about via facebook! But seeing as it was a choice between certain death and possible cure.. She did make us promise not to let him suffer, if it didn't work then please just put him down. We promised. She told us she wasn't allowed to help us with this so she definitely wasn't showing us how to administer a subdermal shot, if she was showing us this she would get in trouble, so she wasn't. If anyone asked, could we tell them that she didn't help us at all? We promised again.
Immediately after the vet we drove to someone who was willing to sell us a little vial and some syringes. Enough to last us a few days so we could decide whether we wanted to continue the very long and very expensive treatment. That evening we gave him his first dose. It was awful. Even after spending hours of reading up on the drug and the treatment it still broke my heart. The drug stings really badly going in, especially the first few times. After the first shot I was in tears, cradling a yowling kitten, convinced I had just killed him in the most painful way. But after a minute or two it subsided and then the miracle happened. Just two hours after the shot he started running around again. Four hours after the shot he actually ate by himself, scarfing down a whole plate of wet food. By the next morning he was playing again. It's ridiculous how fast it works. We decided to were gonna continue the treatment.
A month later we went to the vet again. The treatment lasts three months and we wanted monthly bloods done to track his progress. Our vet expected to see a cat on death's door one month after a FIP diagnosis. What we brought in was a healthy looking kitten who had gained most of his weight back, lost his lymf lump and had decidedly better bloods than last time. That's the point where she became very invested in our case, she had never seen a cat with FIP survive, never mind improve.
Giving the shots got easier and after two weeks it was such a routine thing that it was done in seconds. His bloods kept improving and so did he. After 3 months we stopped and he went into the three month observation period. He still had monthly bloods done to make sure he wasn't regressing but no more shots. He didn't have a relapse and a little more than six months after his initial diagnosis we were able to declare him officially cured. The first cat my vet had ever seen to survive FIP.
I passed on the kindness by donating my superfluous vials and syringes to someone else just starting.
These days Ilya is a very happy boy. He will always be small, probably because he was so sick in a vital growing period, but he is otherwise completely healthy.
My vet still isn't allowed to help cats with FIP, and she definitely doesn't ever at all. She won't show them how to do the shots or tell them about the fb groups.
I am ridiculously passionate about this. My cat is alive today because I got illegal chinese black market meds from facebook. I'm well aware of how that sounds haha, and I completely understand the reactions I get sometimes. It was a risk to take but it was worth taking and I have no regrets.
I will never stop being insanely furious at gilead for keeping this lifesaving drug away from the cats who need it. But if I get into that more then I'll write another novel in the reblog so I won't. Just know I will set fire to any gilead execs or whoever made these decisions and laugh while they char.
If you've read this far and have a cat with FIP and want to ask questions I am always ready to respond. Please reach out.
In conclusion: fuck gilead, FIP is not a death sentence, your cat can be cured and there's thousands if not millions of people who want to help out there.
Do y'all ever think about how wild it is that for years there's been this heartbreaking incurable disease that kills thousands of cats. And Gilead Pharmaceuticals found a drug that treats it but won't actually sell it to veterinarians because of patent bullshit? Because I do.
Anyways. I'd never advocate for acquiring drugs illegally to save your cat's life. Which is why if your cat has FIP you should check out the organization I've put in my tags. So that you remember to avoid getting GS-441524.
Capitalism is evil in general. But capitalism in medicine is cartoonishly monstrous.

Aah okay, so they look into details with the organs of other mammals that are similar in that aspect but still learn about the specifics of the human body. Got it. Only six more years? Hey, college is free for you too, right? Because otherwise I have no idea how anyone would pay for that. If they already need this long I'm not sure if they have enough free time to have a job next to university.
That sounds super interesting! I kinda want to try it. A whole day sounds like a lot of fun!
But why are you fucked when you want to look at eyes/brain/lymfe?

Maybe we should move away from the Nikolaus post but please tell me more wild uni stories. I live for that girl dissecting the rat without gloves (also: unhygienic), you have every right to be enthusiastic about it and uni is wild, so please give me more

since the rollercoaster i’ve been in for the last 2 weeks is finally slowing down a bit (atleast until the funeral at friday) i just wanna write this out to (mostly) myself, so i’ll put it under the cut and you can ignore this
2 weeks ago my grandma got sick, or well we actually found out she had been feeling really sick lately and after several tests on 2 seperate days we got the news on thursday that she got acute lymfe cancer with probably still a couple of months to live if the medicines worked and otherwise just a couple of weeks
my aunt took her into her house because living on her own was not possible anymore at that moment
on monday things took a bad turn and she had to go to the hospital twice and had to actually stay overnight too, on tuesday she was allowed to get back home again because things got better
i saw her on wednesday and thursday, she was really tired but things were still pretty ok, she had been eating well and we all watched some tv together
i went to sleep on thursday evening with the thought that i would just sleep all of friday since i had been feeling shitty because of stress and basically being absolutely exhausted and my grandma was okay and i would see her again sometime friday or saturday
friday morning (8am) i got called awake by my dad that things were really seriously bad and i had to immediately go to my aunts house, i arrived 10 minutes later
from that moment i spend the next 40 hours or so at my aunts house, except for when i got my first vaccination (yay!), things were just really bad and we let all the sisters/brothers of my grandma come to say goodbye and did the last rites
friday evening we started with taking watch, which basically meant i got like 2/3 hours of ‘sleep’ and i went back to taking watch
saturday morning another aunt and uncle would take over the watch so we could sleep, i went to bed to take a nap and got ‘woken’ up 30 minutes later that my grandma was awake and wanted to see my sister and me but she couldn’t talk anymore at that point
shit really went bad fast at that point, she got restless and really wanted to sit up, so we did
after all the shit she just kept fighting to stay alive even through her body just couldn’t anymore and i have never seen something so heartbreaking as what i saw in those hours, i mean it literally still breaks my heart thinking about it
eventually we called the doctor and he put her in sleep, the specialist came later to install the pumps that would continue the flow for the morfine and sleeping stuff
and like 2 hours later she passed away
so in 2 weeks i went from having a grandma living on her own, to a grandma that i have to say goodbye to on friday and it’s so fucking unreal, in 9 fucking days she passed away when it was supposed to be atleast a couple of weeks
and don’t get me wrong i’m glad she’s not in pain anymore because that was the worst to see when you couldn’t do anything but fuck this was so unfair
i feel so sad but i’m also numb and the last couple of days (since friday morning) have been really long ones, trying to organize everything for the funeral, without much sleep and i honestly am so beyond exhaustion that i don’t even feel that tired anymore. but i also know that reality still has to actually hit me so shit is gonna get even worse somewhere in the next couple of days

Rule of a thumb
Usually when u r not sure if the patient should be admitted
They should. Same goes for ICU.
Sometimes patients look....weird.
Example I had a young female with 10days progressive neck and right side of face PROGRESSIVE swelling.
She was walking talking eating drinking. But she got high temp in the last two days. The oedema did not look like flegmona, very slight redness on the neck where her enlagred lymf nodes were pushing on each other.
Anyhow i admitted her and good thing I did, she got TBC :D it ended up being mycobacterium Avium complex.Which is weird, in school they said it usually happen to immunicompromised patients , hiv etc. However in the last couole of years endemic cases in imunocompetend folks are starting to occure.
Anyway
She is doing fine.
Trust your gut.

We voelden ons hele bindweefsel trillen tijdens alle ritjes in Gamla stan.

Foam roller - komplet begynderguide
Tumblr media Tumblr media
