until he spots you laying in between sheets of papers

Lan Jingyi is not know for helping others purely from good will

usually it has to have a good prize for him

and you are the opposite of that

helping people is basically what you're know for

and people tend to take advantage of such a person

and it annoys Jingyi to no end, because you often don't see it

but he doesn't want to straight up tell you

he's a bit afraid that he'll hurt your feelings

until the final straw

he was on a mission and even though it was only for him and the other juniors in his group

you were there as well

it didn't seem like a big deal to others, but to him it was

because he knew that you weren't that good with a sword

nor in missions

and he knows that you're solely their to help him

next thing he knows, he's yelling at you

and unintentionally hurting you

however, he's quick to stop himself and just as quick to start apologizing

the two of you have a heartfelt conversation

after that, your behavior around helping others takes a small turn

only helping out, but still letting the others do it themselves

and Jingyi can only smile at it

he's too kind to call them out for it, but he still makes sure that you don't have to say yes to them

he left for one week on a mission

you were on the verge of collapsing when you saw him again

which is the first time he also puts his foot down

he tells you, gentle but firm at the same time

like every day at dinner lxc is like "do you guys think I am too naive in seeing how perfect a-yao is?" and su she says "actually he's more perfect." and lan wangji says nothing because he's the type to defer to whatever his partner says.

MXY haunts the hell out of Wangxian/all of Cloud Recesses and won't go gentle into that good night no matter how hard they try to calm his soul. He eventually finds a kindred spirit in seclusion!LXC.

This is another one that would probably spawn into a very long fic, so it also gets a concept post.

At first, it seems like mere clumsiness on the part of the Recesses residents. Then, there are accusations of mischief, especially aimed at Wei Wuxian. But eventually, it becomes apparent that somehow, a ghost has managed to get past the barrier surrounding the sect grounds.

And it also becomes apparent that it's too feisty for even Wei Wuxian to capture.

It takes well over a dozen tries of him and Lan Wangji working in tandem, but they finally manage, through a kludged together mix of cultivation techniques, to calm it down enough to at least find out its identity.

When they get a name, Wei Wuxian almost passes out.

There are a hundred questions that Mo Xuanyu is adamantly refusing to answer. Like why he's still around, when his revenge was fulfilled. How he's still around, when the ritual should have destroyed him.

Lan Wangji effectively drags Nie Huaisang to the Cloud Recesses, thinking perhaps Mo Xuanyu's spirit is actually wanting revenge on the one who forced him into the ritual and is merely confused about where he is, but that theory is immediately shot down because the ghost is completely peaceful, even friendly to Nie Huaisang.

And yet remains in the Cloud Recesses when he leaves with a promise to visit (though neither of Wangxian are comfortable with him doing so, they have to admit that until they can get Mo Xuanyu to leave of his own accord, they'll have to allow it.)

Huaisang's visit makes Mo Xuanyu much less violent in his haunting, but Xuanyu still makes it very clear whenever he's present... Until suddenly he doesn't.

This can't be good.

While they initially hope that maybe he's cleared out and gone to stay in Qinghe after all, they have to make sure, and begin checking every building of the Recesses.

It's not until they're practically finished that they think to check Lan Xichen's home. After all, what business could a dead ghost have with a living ghost?

Still, best to be thorough.

As they reach the front door, they hear the quiet sound of a qin.

It's playing Inquiry.

But instead of the stubborn argument that had occurred when they'd tried to get answers out of the ghost, the music is...

They decide that they will let the matter lie for the night, and visit again in the morning.

Ok, I'm finally writing this, the Ezra and Huaisang connection, aka how I came to feel some kind of connection to this gremlin. I can't tell when that exact moment happened and by that time I had finished the donghua and started on both the novel and web series. In general, I tend to get attached to characters similar to myself, but me and Huaisang doesn't share that much, the biggest difference being him fine with seen as useless and frivolous, while I'm the exact opposite, terrified of being seen as useless, lazy and good-for-nothing. He's also considerably more social than I am. I also tend to rp more "hero-like" characters and although Huaisang isn't a villain, imo, he's definitely not a hero either (the first mdzs character I thought of rping was actually LXC). So what made me steer out from my comfort zone?

Well, we aren't completely different, Huaisang and I, but I'm not going to go into details about that. I'm just going to write about main things that made me love this lazy, cunning, lovable gremlin. This might end up being a bit rambling and it will be very personal. Might end up being long too. I will probably not re-read it, so if it ends up sounding weird or grammatical errors and whatnot, sorry about that. And yes, most of it will be about me since I need to explain shit for anyone to get it.

I was born during a blizzard, it was -40C at the time, this was all a rather unlucky sign since children born during storms are said to bring chaos. Therefore, my parents... ok, I'm kidding. Well, not really, I was born during those conditions and tradition says that will bring chaos, but it has nothing to do with what I'm about to write, I was just thinking about how to start and this popped up. Sorry, sorry.

Let's try again. For as long as I can remember, I've always had a love for art and beauty. I used drawings to communicate before i could properly speak (which I have no memories of). I always loved to draw, but also appreciated others' art, including crafts, sculptures and so on. As a very young child, I could randomly start crying because I found things so beautiful, which also included music and the sounds of words. During early childhood tests, my parents were always told I seemed gifted, if not particularly sociable and communicative. I was a sensitive child, who cried easily and frustrated easily. A child that was either constantly moving or could sit for hours staring, who froze in the middle of things and just daydreamed (I'm still guilty of this) or who could just flop down and take a nap whenever. My three main interest as a child was: drawing, reading (in which ancient China ended up being a favourite subject xD ) and walking around in the forest where I lived watching nature and animals, especially birds (we had several different bird houses, since both my parents are nature lovers as well). This all sounds pretty nice, doesn't it? And it was, at first.

I was repeatedly told off for being too sensitive (funny enough, I was also told off for not emoting enough, all this is still a mystery to me), for not being attentive and sociable enough, for being lazy, for being too chatty (but also too quiet, once again this weird thing where I'm still not sure where the limit goes). Hearing this and other things enough times and you start to realise you're wrong and I started to do my best to change. This was also when I realised that people prefer too little over too much, so even if I couldn't grasp what was emotional enough or chatty enough, if I kept myself stoic and quiet (even when I wanted to and could speak), that was more acceptable than me "overreacting" and "never shutting up". I was still an outsider though, something I would always be and still am. No matter how much I've tried to fit in. At least I still had my interests. For now.

As I grew older and things like job and career starting to creep into my life (around the age of 12, since that's when they start asking you about high school and by then you need to know if you want to study a theoretical or practical program and also what kind of that you want, you can't mix and match subject in the way you do in the US, for example) and I had no answers to what I wanted to do. All I know I liked, and wanted to do, was read, write and draw. I was repeatedly told that's not a career and I should stop with those fancies and not waste my intelligence on "aesthetics" (by this time, I had been in three class plays with fairly prominent roles in all three and I started in the church choir at the age of 8). Hearing this over and over, as well as being severely bullied (by both students and teachers), I basically stopped drawing and at 16, I quit the church choir too, saying I needed to focus on my studies, in reality, I had begun to develop pretty bad anxiety (this all culminated in my early twenties when I basically shut myself in in my flat, it's gotten better since, but I still struggle to talk to strangers or show anything I've created out of fear of rejection and ridicule as well as me being extremely sensitive to criticism. And yes, I do miss the acting and the singing sometimes, especially the singing, I've always loved that too). And yes, I did not choose the "art program" in high school, I went to the "social science program - focus: environment, humans and society" (a mix of science and social science). To keep things short, I eventually got my current diagnoses and began drawing again, which helped. I still don't do it as much as I should. I also still don't allow myself the rest my brain seems to need. I do allow myself to cry when needed when I'm alone now. To make it even shorter, I started to try and find my "true self" again. This included being honest about my transmasculine gender identity. And then it came again. The negativity. How I couldn't be things because "real men" aren't this and that way again. Scared of being unaccepted, I once again hardened myself. Now it also included stop wearing nail polish and getting a more traditional masculine appearance and just generally removing anything "feminine" with how I looked or acted: no emotions, no crying, no softness. Hell no. I just wanted people to believe me when I said I'm not a woman. Since that was it. I wasn't, isn't, a woman, but I'm also not a man and not until I moved her to the UK did I find out that you can be neither and still also be masculine (I'm not going to go into details about my gender identity here, feel free to ask if you want to, but to quickly specify it, I'm a transmasc agender).

Anyway, this is where Huaisang enters. Here is this fictional guy where many of my bad traits and many does dislike him for them, but he doesn't give a shit about that. He is unapologetically himself, and as much as Mingjue complains about him, I think we all know he indulged his didi, making him feel loved for who he is for most of the time. And not only is Huaisang unapologetically himself, he prides himself for his artistic interests, his sensitivity, his uselessness and laziness. My mind made a 360 at that and then... once I realised, I cried. I'm admitting that. Why did this fictional character get to be what I weren't allowed to be? He's even a (cis) male! Outrageous! Yes, I admit that too, I got angry and jealous at a fictional character. It went over quickly. Instead I started to love him and also realise that if someone could come up with a character with these traits that were loved and had friends and so on, then maybe, just maybe, I'm not completely wrong and broken?

Huaisang has partly helped me to try and start taking steps to find who I am now. I'm working on growing out my hair, I've bought nail polish again (only used black so far, but I have a lovely pale mother-of-pearl pink next to me I want to use) and I want to wear beautiful clothes again (still needs to be comfy though), even if I haven't dared checking out the women's section yet (since the men's one are boring and we all know it), but at least the will is there now. I'm trying to get back to drawing and painting more again, but that's also effort since it requires me to take things out and put it away each time. I've returned to some bird watching though.

Huaisang might not be the best fictional role-model you can have, but I think I needed him, still does, he makes his gremlin comments to me sometimes (obviously, I know this is me talking to me). He definitely drives me insane at times (I'm too much of an "Orderly Lan" to him), but it's worth it. The true charmer he is, he managed to even charm me into stepping out of my boundaries, both as myself and for the type of muses I usually portray.

Now, where can I find a real life Mingjue for myself? xD

What if Jiang Cheng knows that the Lans headband (modernised version of) is something important, but doesn't know to /which/ level it is important for them because Lan Xichen never told him (nor did lqr or any other lan). This is why he doesn't see anything wrong when lxc suggests he wear his (which is maybe more akin to a loose choker with a cloud pendant?) as a good luck charm and to help him feel calm his nerve at the next archery competition there families organised (including the llj and qgn family too).

jc is nervous to participate after a couple of years of not attending it, the pressure put on his shoulder by his mother to do better than wwx each time (and failing) being too much.

after years of not participating it is lxc who suggests he tries again, especially since now he doesn't always have his mother around to remind him to do better /all the time/.

So he accepts the suggestion of wearing lxh necklace since it has a weirdly calming effect on him, probably reminding him of lxh.

He casually arrives with lxh at his side, wearing the totally-not-a-choker very visibly around his neck. This causes various reactions from people around them.

Lwj: shoots a knowing look to his brother with a nod, probably knowing how his brother feels about jc

lqr: shocked that his nephew would let someone casually wear his "headband" like this, wondering if this is a declaration lxh is doing right here.

jfm & yzy: looking at each other, trying to check with each other if they remembered correctly what exactly this gesture /means/ from lxh sides. As jc something important to tell them?

nmj & jgy: both looking discreetly happy that their friend is /finally/ doing something and not just pining for the jc.

wwx: amused that lxh lets him wear his totally-not-a-choker the same way lwj lets him play with his headband (this probably cause lqr to nearly have a heart attack at the sudden information).

And all this time jc is clueless, stuck in a little bubble with lxh that is trying to reassure him that yes everything will be alright, they had been training together and he was doing really good when they were together. Plus they were here just to have some fun, he doesn't need to really try and compete against anyone else if he didn't want to.

It was only a couple of days after the competition (where he did pretty well for the first time in years) that nhs ask him about lxh-

necklace, finally telling him what it meant (knowing about it since lxh had explained it to him when he was younger). Pretty much that only family and their partner can touch it.

jc ends up a blushing mess, realising just now /how often/ lxh had let him touch it because he wanted to look at the cloud pattern on it or even let him /wear it/. He doesn't know what to do now that he even wore it /in front of lqr/.

of course, he's happy about it, because he may or may not be feeling more than friendship for lxh, but he still doesn't know what to do with something that sounded like a love confession, but an indirect one.

He asks him about it and only then does lxh properly confess to him, admitting he wasn't sure if he was feeling the same and that he was sorry for making jc uncomfortable about this. of course, jc has none of this apology, telling him that he isn't uncomfortable, but happy about it, confessing too at the same time.

They end up dating after this, jc being caught wearing his necklace more than once more because "it suits you and I really love seeing you wear it" managed to convince lxh a couple of times because he just loves seeing jc wearing it.

Oh, it is very microscope-worthy, my friend. You are right to say that. Very kind and brave of you to ask anyway!

Okay, so, we're all aware that LXC is doing Not Great after the events of canon and won't be for like... while. I like to imagine 2 things about this:

NHS is aware and maybe even feels a little guilt that LXC is now broken. It wasn't his intention to break him, but it was an unavoidable piece of what had to happen.

LXC isn't just doing Not Great, he may never recover, not without a lot of active effort being poured into him. His whole sense of reality is shattered and I think this could lead to seeing some really dark shit come out of LXC.

Yes, LXC has his brother and his brother's husband, but LWJ has to run like the whole world of cultivation and as much as LWJ and WWX care about LXC, I think they'd have their hands so full with other shit that they can't responsibly devote themselves to caring for LXC 24/7. In his more lucid moments, regrettably, I think LXC is also aware of this and so is reluctant to ask for help despite the fact that he's coming apart at the seams.

Under these conditions, I think it's possible that we might see some serious malcoping from LXC, some real bad and even dangerous choices as he tries to reconcile what he knew and trusted and loved with what happened. I think it could get to the point that LWJ and WWX have to make him the priority, if only to stop the byproducts and side effects of his descent into madness. It's wrenching and scary to see such a good man in such a state.

WWX and LWJ would of course start looking for solutions and at this point, I think NHS would pop back up, in that uncanny way of his. For, after all, who knows the treatment of madness better than the Unclean Realm? I think he might even make it sound like LWJ and WWX would be doing him a favor to let him take LXC and care for him there. I think it would take some convincing, after all, LWJ and WWX know now and NHS knows there's nothing he can do to make them unknow. But, on the other hand, what ulterior motive would it serve to offer to help here? Why would he betray them, and in such an obvious move, when they already have cause to be wary of him? No, for someone who thinks in spiraling patterns like NHS, this is not the move he would make if he was trying to hurt LXC, it's far too transparent. He only moves when there is perfect cover. So, this offer must be sincere.

Even though WWX and LWJ might trust NHS to really be trying to help, that doesn't mean though that LXC gets it or appreciates it. He'd be skeptical, not just of NHS' intentions, but of his own ability to even be helped. Why bother with him? The best thing he can do for anyone is just die quietly. Why would NMJ's little brother want anything to do with him now? NHS always titters and cocks his head when he asks that, like he doesn't understand the question. Of course, he wants to help. He's very incompetent and doesn't know much about healing, but he has access to all his family's meditation practices and if there is something there that can be of use, well, surely he'd like to offer it!

NHS sticks close to LXC while he stays as his guest. Mostly LXC is listless, waiting for death to finally release him. NHS is bright and bubbly and flits about, like he used to do when LXC would make regular journeys here to visit NMJ. It stirs a nostalgia in LXC that he thought long since dead. The memories are too painful; he shuts them out. But then NHS will take his hand, or draw his attention to a tapestry, or just stare at him with the widest, keenest look, like that of a puppy, with that desperate desire to help even though he clearly could never understand what is wrong and... the pain somehow abates. It slowly becomes easier to come out of the pain again. And yet, LXC has to wonder why NHS is helping, really helping. Why will he never answer when LXC asks him.

Somehow, despite everyone's misgivings and doubts, LXC starts to improve. He sleeps regularly, he even eats and begins to put on weight again. Despite himself, he's starting to look and feel better as he helps NHS with his matters of state and combing through the archives and family history for useful information. He finds that work, projects, take his mind off of everything that happened and every time he finishes a task, NHS seems to always have another problem ready and urgently requiring his assistance. At first, he'd assumed it was just NHS' natural incompetence at leadership, but eventually he begins to notice how effortlessly and unfailingly NHS has something for him to do and it cannot be mere coincidence. He's... he's not sure how he feels; can't decide if it is frightening to be so understood or comforting.

Still, the question plagues him: why is NHS bothering? Why didn't he let him die, all those long months ago with his brother and their lover? Why has he worked so hard to prevent his death? Every time LXC turns his mind towards the answer, he balks. He cannot even say why it frightens him, only that... there is something inside NHS, something in him that LXC cannot quite look at yet and the very idea of it shudders him to his core. It is only worse that, outwardly, NHS is all sweetness and affection. He dotes on LXC, gets him anything he wants, even before he knows he wants it. He spends uncountable hours out of his day with LXC alone, so many hours that LXC can't understand how the Unclean Realm continues to run with its leader so adrift in personal occupations. Every soft touch, every tender word, begins to grate on LXC with razor sharpness. It is too much to be borne.

One day, LXC finally snaps and begins screaming at NHS. He calls him every name under the sun, accuses him of terrible things. He cannot bear the idea that the man taking such good care of him is the same man who killed JGY in cold blood, who made his death happen, who knew all and saw all and wrought his judgment. He throws priceless heirlooms without thought. NHS sits amongst the chaos, a placid look on his face, saying nothing to LXC's accusations and bile. Eventually, LXC wears himself down into sobs, collapsing in a corner. As calmly as you would approach a frightened animal, NHS approaches him with his personal handkerchief and embraces LXC, pulling him into his lap and stroking his hair until the sobbing subsides. He coos and shushes and never says a word about LXC's accusations. What is there to say?

The next day, LXC awakes, groggy, but... clear-headed. Clear-headed for the first time in months. And when he comes to breakfast with NHS, the room he destroyed now clean and beautiful as if it had never seen violence, and NHS just as bubbly and cheerful as ever, he finds he can reciprocate. Instead of reluctantly accepting, NHS' overbearing energy, he can meet with it and actually smile and take part in his joy. NHS' eyebrows raise ever so slightly, but he then returns to his delighted thrills, talking at an ever more rapid pace in his enthusiasm and LXC can laugh at what he has to say.

What happened between them, LXC would struggle to put into words. All he can say, even to himself, is that he understands now. Or, he at least understands enough. There is something dark and endless in NHS, but so there is in him, and so there was in JGY and, if he’s being honest, NMJ. Everyone he’s ever loved had some terrible truth inside them. And what made him afraid of NHS was just as much his fear of himself and what he has become, maybe what he always was. But there is also gentleness and kindness and love. And while that doesn’t cancel out what happened, he thinks he begins to see why NHS has made the choices he has, why he’s working so hard to help, and it isn’t merely guilt. He’s come to understand that many things can be true at once. He may never again be the bastion of purity and good intention that he was. But that doesn’t mean he is naught but a burden to all and better off dead. Maybe there is still good he can do. Maybe he can start here.

I think that's a lot to work with there, anon. The struggle of any LXC ship post-canon is just keeping him alive. He so badly wants to stop existing because he can't handle all of it being true at once, he can't reconcile what he knows and what he knows. For my money, anyone would struggle trying to talk him down from just slipping into the dirt with his beloveds, but NHS might stand a better chance than most because he has never been pure, he has never had the luxury of innocence. He has always been a calculating and reserved creature and because of that, he has more kindness than anyone for people who are struggling with their nature. After knowing LXC so well for so many years, after knowing him as NMJ's dearest companion until JGY, I think NHS has always seen the best in LXC and would have unshakeable faith that he can come out of this if he lets himself. He would really believe that LXC can be just as good and kind and gentle as ever, knowing the blood of JGY is on his hands. Because NHS is already a monster, he has an infinite capacity for seeing and loving the monstrousness in others and understanding that being a monster does not mean you cannot do good. Very few people I think would be able to convince LXC of the same.

I also just love the psychological horror of LXC being restored to life only to fall into bed with NHS. I just think that's really, really funny.

not to say he doesn't have flaws - his naivete is disastrous for all of them and he overlooks her concerns out of a patronizing dismisiveness when he should be respecting her instincts, which helped her survive all her life on the streets. also, it's admirable of him to be nonjudgemental but xy just has odious vibes and it's a tragedy he was so charmed by him that he didn't pick up on that. sort of a xxc jgy situation except xy was fully in love with him or whatever approximates love for him and I still think jgy was mostly using lxc to survive. so another dark foil to wx just as songxiao are a lighter (but still tragic) parallel

anyway he thinks a-qing is funny and is clearly endeared by her, and she clearly likes him a lot despite lying to him. their dynamic has so much chemistry and potential for being great family, it's a shame they're not more popular to write about. this is probably one of the only reasons he's had to smile since he and SL parted ways

I think it helps that the writers have a very solid idea of what this relationship is and exactly how each character felt at every moment of it. meanwhile for wx interactions can be very inconsistent and confusing. anyway GET YOUR HANDS OFF HIM YOU FREAK

I mean, it is the central point of the novel. But even aside from that, LWJ is consistently only ever interested in WWX. I'm not saying he shouldn't be interpreted as gay, but I am saying that even if he is gay it's secondary to his actual sexual identity which is Weiyingsexual. I'm not treading any new ground here.

Personally I don't find Wangxian interesting, but I at least believe they love each other and are compatible in the sense that they are both selfish in slightly different ways that mesh well for their own private universe. Not so great for others in their orbit, but part of that is authorial fiat so I try to be fair about what I hold against them.

I don't think CQL successfully executed the changes it made to Wangxian in having them click and partner up from the beginning, but I do think it was necessary to at least attempt to rebalance the relationship. In MDZS, WWX genuinely does not reciprocate LWJ's feelings in his first life beyond a very deeply buried and not particularly inevitable spark. His first life is really centred on his relationships with JC and JYL and they are the tragic 'romance' (in the traditional sense). LWJ only gets upgraded during the second life. Kind of awkward to do your sweeping romance if it isn't a romance in the 35+ episodes of flashbacks, so I don't blame them for trying. And I do like the Colin Firth vibes WYB brought to his LWJ.

Aside from not finding the idea of LWJ with anyone else convincing, let me take the opportunity to pettily sideswipe at Chengxian and shoving LWJ in to make it what? Wangchengxian? Is that what it's called? Either way, nooooooo thank you. You can't get much more fraternal than WWX and JC's idiot bickering, and even if they weren't such classic stupid boys together, JC and LWJ loathe one another with the kind of loathing that does not give way to a rendition of I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face. (Incidentally, in the original stage version Eliza walks out on Higgins never to return, and it is awesome.)

favorite platonic/familial relationships

Obviously it's his relationship with LXC (and by extension LQR?). Just absolutely fascinating. Their rapport is very sweet, as is LXC's protectiveness and gentle trolling. LWJ is not a particularly good didi, but LXC both doesn't notice and doesn't mind.

More seriously, though he was also raised with harsh discipline, in comparative terms LWJ is the spoilt baby of the family. As is often the result when we encounter morally rigid characters in MDZS, he is also in many respects hypocritical. Clearly I have a lot of negative things to say about him as a brother to LXC, but I'm not interested in demonising him and what's really interesting about it is that by and large this uneven dynamic works for the Twin Jades. Right up until it doesn't.

When LXC really needs LWJ to come through for him, he just doesn't. I'm not even talking about LWJ's behaviour leading up to and during the Temple, which is objectionable in the sense that he refuses to give JGY the benefit of the doubt that LXC extends to WWX. No, I'm talking about the fact that he bods off for literal months after LXC has just been through the worst experience of his life and lost his closest friend and partner. And I don't want to hear it about LXC being the elder and having a responsibility to take care of LWJ. LWJ owes consideration to his big brother and clan leader, even if that consideration might take a different form.

Here's a thought experiment. After WWX's first death, when LWJ has been whipped 33 times by the discipline whip and dragged himself to rescue LSZ and branded himself in drunken grief, can you imagine LXC bodding off for three months without a word to have picnics with JGY? It's inconceivable isn't it.

I didn't intend for this section to become a hit piece on LWJ and he obviously does love his brother, but in terms of actions it is somewhat of a one way street. The fact that LXC has no other expectations doesn't protect LWJ from my croc-hatted judgement face.

Righteous LWJ. Oh, please. In MDZS, righteousness goes hand in hand with hypocrisy, and though I doubt MXTX the human being intended LWJ to be read as thoroughly selfish, the (translation of) the text she wrote is a depiction of a profoundly selfish man. And that's not a bad thing, because his selfishness coupled with the occasions when he is genuinely altruistic makes him more interesting than if he really were a moralising ice cube with a ribbon tied around it.

I'm going to be lazy and suggest X-Men AU again just because his secondary power would definitely be organic diamond form like Emma Frost. I don't think he'd also be a telepath, but the idea of that is funny because he could read WWX's mind and know for certain that WWX isn't (currently) into him. But as a serious answer, organic diamond form as a secondary power and then primary power the same as Alison Blaire. I see no reason why his mutant name wouldn't be Dazzler too.

I think he only has like one outfit. I'm sorry, I'm not cool enough to be able to distinguish between different varieties of plain white robes. In CQL I prefer first life LWJ because they put that massive ornament on second life LWJ's head to make him look older and taller but actually they created an unfortunate perspective effect where he just looks even shorter.

Thinking, and like. all previous nie sect leaders qi deviated to death, because that's how the saber cultivation worked: it gradually fucked up their qi and tempers on top of that. and jgy playing the song of turmoil didn't cause nmj's death, it just sped it up. so... what if that's what happened with wrh and nmj's father?

the facts we have (from chapter 49):

wrh called nmj's father, said his saber was quite cool indeed, patted it a couple of times and that was it.

after nmj's father went back, he Was Not Pleased, rather annoyed that wrh called him just for a second then sent him back.

however, nothing was "out of the ordinary".

during a night hunt, his saber suddenly shattered, and in result, he couldn't defend himself against the beast who then injured him heavily.

after nmj took him back to the unclean realm, he couldn't accept this/couldn't get over it/怎么也咽不下这口气/腹に据えかね、悔しさに満ちていた (he was full of anger and frustration)

and his wounds didn't heal.

half a year later, he passed away. "it wasn't clear whether the cause was rage or illness".

later, when wrh and nmj fight, there's this neat little sentence:

愤怒使他陡然之间力大无穷, or, 湧き上げる憤怒が一瞬にして彼に限りなき力を与えた (rage welled up in his chest and immediately gave him a surge of unlimited boundless power)

i don't know much about how powers work in xianxia novels, let alone xianxia-based webnovels, but this sounds to me a bit like the qinghe nie cultivation method kind of uh, fucking sucked.

saber cultivation requires resentful energy of beasts and monsters.

the blade requires more strength and an aggressive fighting style than a regular "honest" sword.

unfortunately, in the process, the sabers start demanding more sacrifice, more anger and more blood -- this is why after their owners' deaths, they still need to be contained.

the more one uses such a saber, the more their qi and temper gets out of control.

it's like an ouroboros. the saber needs 😡 to work. but using saber makes one 😡 as well. both the saber and the user get more powerful thanks to 😡, but by getting more 😡, they get more 😡 (<-- this is not good).

another two things, from chapters 49 and 50: one, nmj doesn't seem to notice that anything is out of order with his behaviour; when lxc points out his mind is in turmoil, he says "no it's not, i know what i'm doing". two: nmj still "hasn't told nhs about the saber spirit". it could mean "about the fact that sabers fuck you up, yknow, that it's a thing", or "that baxia's saber spirit in particular is being rowdy", but if nhs knew about the saber spirits being a thing, he would've done the math, i think. so, i think it's safe to assume that nhs did not know about the saber illness.

i'm talking about this because... they just don't know, huh. nmj's father must have been at least thirtysomething when he died, which means that a, even without a war going on, he's practiced rageloop turbo 3000 for more than half of his life and that probably shows, and b, his sons haven't seen his calmer, non-saberbrained self, because he must have been like 20 when he had them. the nie are just fiery-tempered! the sabers like a fiery-tempered warrior. which, okay, but could nmj tell that his father was, over the years, steadily getting quicker to anger? he has more duties, and besides, having wrh for a neighbour is stressing... no, he couldn't.

and wrh is power-thirsty and unstable, but also clever. he did work it out that the nie cultivators are strictly bonded with their sabers, so like a cat pushing something off the table, he couldn't help himself. he literally patted the blade a couple of times -- i'm assuming it wasn't just that, and that he infused his touch with something -- but it was enough to send this bond spiralling, enough for the saber to shatter. was the beast nmj's father was fighting so strong that its horn stopped his body's regeneration abilities? or was it the damage done to the saber that fucked up his qi and his body's regeneration abilities? LOTS TO THINK ABOUT.

again, my problem is that i don't really know how it all works -- but iirc, while jc doesn't have his sword, he's able to use zidian just fine, meaning that a proper, righteous cultivator's qi isn't tied to their sword. the nie cultivation seems to me like one big clan of people with targets carefully painted on their backs, of time bombs about to explode. there's no way out of this one!

and also like. something something, jgy trying to rise from his place as a sex worker's son -- he can't do it like a normal, high-born cultivator, so he has to use means other deem undignified, cheating, unfair. something something the nie sect founder trying to rise from his place as a butcher... i'm not saying they're the same, jgy honorary nie etc, but -- if you have no resources, then even if you somehow get them... jgy is paranoid, he feels he can't fully trust even the man he considers his closest friend, he's trapped in the way he's perceived by the society. meanwhile, the nie clan is trapped in their own way of cultivation that they can't abandon because you don't just abandon the way of your ancestors, even if you're literally cultivating yourself to death.

I was looking at the scene of LXC and LWJ and the bunnies—it's a memory in a dream, in the second incense burner chapter, so I suppose you could reject it but I think the most natural interpretation is that it's just how it happened. And it's really interesting!

Not long afterwards, he managed to make out the whispering voices of two boys. He walked closer, finding that one of their voices sounded quite familiar, “… Nobody had ever kept any within the bounds of the Cloud Recesses. To do such a thing is unheard of.”

After a moment of silence, the other boy answered, somewhat dejected, “I know. But… I have already made my promise. I cannot go against my word.”

Wei WuXian picked this up. He sneakily glanced over. As expected, conversing amidst a clearing of green grass was Lan XiChen and Lan WangJi.

It was a spring day vibrant with soft winds. The young brothers seemed to be two immaculate pieces of jade, reflected against each other. Both were dressed in snowy robes, their wide sleeves and forehead ribbons flapping in the wind, almost as if they were a painting. The Lan WangJi at this point in time was also just about sixteen. He frowned slightly, as though he was worried about something. What he held in his arm was a white rabbit, sniffing its pink nose, and beside his foot was another rabbit, its long ears perked up as it stood clinging to his boot, trying to climb up.

Lan XiChen, “How could the casual remarks between two boys be considered a serious promise? Is it really because of this?”

Lan WangJi looked at the ground and said nothing.

Lan XiChen smiled, “Fine. Then if by any chance Uncle asks of this, you must explain things to him properly. These days, you have been spending just a little too much time on them.”

Lan WangJi nodded solemnly, “Thank you, Brother.” With a pause, he added, “… They will not affect my studies.”

Lan XiChen, “I know, WangJi. However, you must not tell Uncle who gave these to you. Or else, out of rage, he would make you send them away no matter what.”

Hearing this, it seemed as though Lan WangJi hugged the rabbit in his arms even tighter. Lan XiChen smiled. He reached out and poked the rabbit’s pink nose with his fingertip, before leisurely walking away.

So some thoughts:

a) that bit with LXC poking the rabbit's nose is adorable, help. Has this been in any of the adaptations? Is there any fanart of this? I must see it.

b) I think this is a really interesting look at the relationship between the young Jades, specifically. In particular it's a great example of how on the one hand LXC is extremely indulgent and supportive of LWJ and how, on the other hand, they both consider LXC to have legitimate authority over LWJ, which he exercises (legitimately). I think there can be a tendency to, I suppose, understand that authority negatively, but that's not really how it's written: both LXC's authority over and correcting of LWJ, and his support and indulgence of LWJ, are presented as part of the same good relationship. They don't contradict each other; they work together.

And it is clear that LXC does correct him. He's supporting LWJ on the bunnies (and instructing him not to tell LQR the details so the bunnies don't get sent away!), even though "To [keep bunnies within CR] is unheard of", and he's also telling him that he's been spending a bit too much time on them lately. And it is entirely as a loving older brother, but I think if your understanding of their relationship doesn't include that kind of loving correction, it is missing something.

(This isn't the only time this happens, to be clear. In the lectures at CR arc, of course, but we also see it near the beginning, when LWJ drags MXY home, and LXC cancels it and tells him to treat his guests better, and also in a variety of other places but listing all of them is outside the scope of this post.)

(b ii. I do think this makes an interesting contrast with WWX and JC; one of the fault lines there was that while WWX absolutely loved JC I'm not sure he ever saw JC as having legitimate authority over him. Which was a real problem when JC was actually his sect leader.)

(b. iii And it's also interesting to consider in light of NMJ's relationship with NHS and JGY both! One of NMJ's failings is, I think, his failure to actually effectively correct NHS. Obviously this is not just on him, NHS plays a role here too, but while many of NHS' hobbies are fine his failure to develop anything beyond that really is a problem—see also how he's totally sheltered during Sunshot, while pretty much every other major figure in the major clans was a major figure in the war. And while NMJ is certainly angry with him about it, and we see him express that anger, he also indulges NHS hugely and—okay I'm extrapolating some here but from what we do see it looks like the discipline is mostly anger-based, he lashes out and punishes NHS when he's angry and lets him off when he's amused or whatever, and that's really not a good way to teach someone! And then if you consider his relationship with JGY—part of the reason he swears brotherhood with JGY is his desire to guide him, but his efforts on this front are worse than useless, and he doesn't extend him any support at all.)

c) I also think it's interesting as a look at LXC in its own right, separate from what it says about his relationship with LWJ. In particular I think it's very telling that he instructs LWJ not to tell LQR who gave the bunnies to him, lest LQR make LWJ send them away! First, it certainly shows a strong trust in his own judgement; he knows LQR would not agree with him but he knows what he's doing. Secondly, I think it's really worth noting that he's proposing something at least adjacent to deceiving LQR: he's helping conceal information from LQR that LQR would absolutely think was relevant to his decision! Indeed, he's actively suggesting the concealment. And LQR is their uncle and teacher—and LXC isn't even sect leader at this point. Now I do think it matters that it's not the same thing as lying directly to LQR; they're just avoiding giving him certain information. That's not where everyone draws a line but I do think it's one of LXC's. And I think it all suggests he has a grasp of subtleties and of subtle distinctions even this early on in the timeline.

(Interestingly we see him use pretty much exactly the same tactic in much worse circumstances later on in the timeline; after LWJ and WWX escape from Carp Tower, and LXC returns, LQR has woken but LXC "told everyone not to tell him anything unnecessary" (64).)

d) This is far from a perfect parallel but reflecting on LXC and JGY's similarities, I can't help but link this moment, with LXC backing LWJ up on the bunnies, with JGY giving JL Fairy. They're very different situations in a lot of ways, but they are both helping a beloved younger relative, with kindness and support, through animal companionship. There are a lot of differences too, of course; but I do think it speaks to some of the ways in which they're similar, which is more than people think.

Am I the only one that feels that the public underrates WWX's relationship with the Wen Renmants? Specially in comparison with the Lans and Jiangs, when the Wens where the ones that treated WWX the best (excluding LWJ, of course.)

I am not saying that the Lans are as bad as the Jiangs, but it feels like the sect itself is build on oppresive ideal, while the Jiang family was straight abusive.

The Wens at least had the decency of undertanding that WWX is a human being.

I've said this before, and I'm sure I'll say it again: the Lan sect is not built on oppressive ideals. Strict ideals? Sure. But strict and oppressive are not the same thing. Hell, you look at the actual rules we know for the Lan sect and most of them are just... variations on "don't be a dick". Don't gossip, don't lie... And then there are the ones like "no running in the Cloud Recesses" and limits on the amount of food you can eat during one meal (now, I don't know standard bowl sizes or meal portions in ancient China, but three bowls of rice sounds like plenty of rice for one meal to me) and the curfew, which... none of that sounds like anything unreasonable. Most boarding schools and other such live-in institutions would have a similar list! And the Lans do not expect anyone outside their sect to obey the rules (unless they're currently within the Cloud Recesses; the guest disciples are expected to follow at least some of the rules because they're living in the Cloud Recesses, which is not unreasonable, and they're given quite a lot of leeway even so. WWX has to break three rules simultaneously as repeat offences to get a punishment close to what he gets for sunbathing in the Jiang sect), nor do they force people to stay in the sect and obey their rules if it doesn't suit them. If you join and stay in the Lan sect you are agreeing to follow their rules. That's not oppressive; you stay in the Lan sect and you know what you're getting into. You signed up for it. Just because a strict environment with lots of clear, firm rules wouldn't be good for you doesn't mean it would be bad for everyone. With the Lan sect people just look at LWJ's mother (a situation we know fuck all about beyond what LXC tells us, which suggests that she was imprisoned for murder and that she never showed any sign that she thought her treatment was unfair or unjust, at least in front of her kids; we can't prove a single thing about the Lans' treatment of her, so I don't like using her as evidence) and LWJ getting whipped (for committing treason, and again there's nothing to suggest anyone involved thinks his punishment is unfair, not even LWJ himself or WWX) and just... decide they're bad because they're strict. If it's not for you fine, but that doesn't mean they're bad as a whole.

Anyway. That said. Yeah, definitely the fandom undervalues WWX's relationship with the Wens; they really were his family, and treated him better than anyone had in his life up to that point. An argument could be made for putting the Lans ahead of them since Gusu is where WWX eventually settles, but... there's a reason why WWX keeps WN in his life and clearly wants nothing to do with JC anymore. He keeps the remains of the Wens and is done with the remains of the Jiangs. That is deliberate.

Yo DO see these characters as one dimensional that never think about the past, never get sad about it, that barely have thoughts and feelings. Did you know that wwx not wanting jc again in his life doesn't mean he never cared about him? That he sacrificing something important for him (and that it's not just bc he's a Good Dude who only do the correct as you try hard to believe) doesn't mean that they should be friends again? It's like you can't live with the fact that one thing don't cancel the other, that wwx actually doesn't care about jc anymore but he did once and it's ok.
