Still stuck in Cloud Recesses, Huaisang feels the need to do something. He has to find out more. There has to be evidence. Something he can do. The idea about what came to him later on, when Wangji had visited him the first time and commented about how he looked like a corpse. Very rude of him, even if accurate.

Remembering some of the things Wei Wuxian had told him, Huaisang began experimenting. Experimenting in using birds for far-viewing. Although he didn't have his spiritual mynas here, birds have always liked him and he got daily visits by the local wild life.

Of course, he didn't tell anyone about this. The technique isn't exactly conventional, but that didn't stop him from using it daily and he gradually grew better at it. With that, he could control the bird for longer periods. It was all going really well. Until it didn't.

It wasn't just one thing, but a mix of Huaisang doing his bird-sighting too often and the poor bird getting into a too strong air current and crashing into a tree. Stunned, but otherwise unharmed, Huaisang's soul got jostled around. Once back in his own body, he coughed up more blood than he'd like. Actually, any blood is more than he like, but it wasn't the first time his training had left him doing so. However, it was the first time the amount of blood was enough to make him wonder if it would be noticed, despite him cleaning it up.

Of course, Lan Wangji had to visit right after this, a bit earlier than usual. Observant as ever, he notices that something is wrong.

"Pale? I see. I'm just a little tired, that is all." It's not all, but if Wangji finds out what he's doing, he might stop him and Huaisang doesn't want that.

I've been looking for a specific cannon divergent fic. I remember everything mostly going the same up until the end of the Sunshot campaign.

For some reason, the wens aren't killed off. A new original character is put in charge. Either NHS, WWX or JZX thinks something is up with the new wen clan leader an sect leader Jin.

For some reason WWX ends up in cloud recesses. Marriage or healing?

There are also two memorable sect conferences in the story where JGS uses demonic cultivation (either WWX's work or help from the new wen sect) to control people. The first one is used to upset the sect leader's and get them angry. WWX finds out about this one and tells people. For the most part it backfires, and JGS tries to blame it on him then uses someone else as a scapegoat. JYL is pregnant with JL, and the array makes her feel sick and leave. I don't think NMJ was affected though.

The second time, an array is hidden in JGS bedroom and is like some kind of aphrodisiac/compulsion array for JGS to assault some young woman.

In the end, JGS next victim kills him publicly and the Jin and Wen sects are exposed. Wen Qing is the next Wen leader and the Jin sect has a lot of restructuring to do. @hopesteapot-blog

Lan Wangji’s dislike of Jiang Wanyin

So, I dived back into the world of fanfiction and was quickly reminded of all the fanon things I hate. Starting with Lan Wangji’s unreasonable dislike of Jiang Cheng. In order to promote "Wei Wuxian's little brother Jiang Cheng", Lan Wangji's very good reasons to hate Jiang Cheng are reduced to some petty, stupid bs like "He [LWJ] didn't like how often Jiang Cheng hit Wei Wuxian." And later on we get this gem: "After some time LWJ understood that violence is JC's way of showing affection." Like, wtf? If my younger sibling (and I have one) showed their affection through violence, I wouldn't see it as love, but as abuse, 'cause that's what it is. And I'm not talking about the normal sibling fighting because that's not what Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng's relationship is. I mean, just reread the Cloud Recesses Study arc. The only thing Jiang Cheng seems to know is how to belittle and criticise Wei Wuxian. I'm not gonna lie, I found some of the remarks quite funny (I'm a passive aggressive bitch myself), but when that's the only thing that comes out of Jiang Cheng's mouth, it really starts to eat at you. I deeply respect Wei Wuxian's ability to not take it seriously. And when Lan Wangji’s actual grievances with Jiang Cheng are stated, we get the "but he [JC] still loved his brother" nonsense. Lan Wangji’s real reasons to dislike Jiang Cheng are as follows: abandoning Wei Wuxian, being the prime reason and catalyst of Wei Wuxian's death, spreading hateful rumours about Wei Wuxian (who else could have been the source of "WWX is responsible for Jiang Clan's massacre" if not the only surviver, besides Wei Wuxian, of the said massacre?), and hunting down the so-called demonic cultivators because "what if that's actually Wei Wuxian." I commend Lan Wangji’s restraint, because if it had been me, I would have long since punched that guy in the nose. And I absolutely love Lan Wangji’s attitude of "I won't look at you; I won't speak to you. Sizhui, you may speak on my behave."

Please tell me I'm not the only one who gets toothache whenever I read this. When I came across it for the first time, I didn’t think much of it. Like, at first, I thought it was cute, but then it started grinding on my nerves. Why? Because it diminishes Lan Wangji’s love, trust and devotion to Wei Wuxian to a mere fate thing that is beyond your control. He is already being reduced to some block of ice (by the mob in mdzs and the fandom), and now you also simplify such an important part to his character. Like, where did this even come from? Yes, we have the famous Lan "I will leave this world, because my love is no longer in it" An and Lan Wangji, but that's it when it comes to die-hard romantics in the Lan Clan. The story of Qingheng-jun and Madam Lan is not really romantic (I'm not gonna speculate on what there was and wasn't between them because Lan Xichen telling Wei Wuxian about his parents had a different purpose, namely, to esteblish Lan Wangji as someone who doesn't just listen to what his elders have to say, but as someone who seeks to understand and then judge the reasoning by his own moral beliefs). And that's it. So where is "Lans only love once" coming from??

So why did I write all of this? Well, I'm just tired of seeing this over and over again. Aren't we all so creative? Come up with new head-canons (so that I have more things to criticise /jk) or stick to canon characteristics. Please.

Just seen fanart for some awful, absolute bs ship which I won't even dignify with a ship name. But WWX is and always will be only for LWJ. Even MXTX said please don't split them up and some of you put him with JC?! And call it an intense pairing?! Lmfao! The word you are looking for is toxic...

Or how about would never happen... WWX has better taste for a start. JC is homophobia and an ass hat... WWX would never, ever pick JC. They have absolutely nothing in common and he never felt anything like that for him.

After the brothel incident, WWX settles into a comfortable home life with LWJ now that Jin Ziyan is no longer a problem. Surprisingly Duke Jin Guangshan does not speak up for his nephew. In fact, he is secretly mad at Jin Ziyan for going against Wei Wuxian. Jin Guangshan is in league with Wen Ruohan and plots to betray Gusu. He knows Wei Wuxian is Wen Ruohan's man and does not wish Wei Wuxian to leave Hanguang Manor.

Without Jin Ziyan, Jiang Yanli is elevated into the rank of ce-wangfei (deputy consort) and given the right to manage the princely household. Everyone says if she gives birth to a boy then she will for sure become princess consort. Wei Wuxian is very happy for his foster sister, even though Lan Wangji feels guilty that the most likely scenario now is that he will only be permitted to install Wei Ying as his deputy consort if Jiang Yanli is princess consort, but Wei Ying laughs it off and says he genuinely does not care. He's a servant, being a deputy consort is already way above his station and way too much work.

Months later, Jiang Yanli gives birth to a healthy boy, which Lan Wangji names Lan Yuan.

In the interim, Wei Wuxian discovers information about Yiling City's defenses through Lan Wangji and steals it for Wen Ruohan. This information is delivered via Xue Yang. Yiling has been a city of contention between Gusu and Qishan for many generations. In the last dispute, Gusu had won Yiling from Qishan, which they now want to retake.

At the same time, Lan Qiren quietly conducts his own investigation into Wei Wuxian since becoming suspicious of him after the brothel incident. The pastry shop which has been a front for Wen spies is called into question. The store owner is arrested; Xue Yang disappears, and Wei Wuxian is summoned into the palace for questioning. Lan Wangji does not understand why Wei Ying would be summoned so suddenly for questioning when things have been smooth for many months now.

Wei Wuxian is on his way to Lan Qiren when suddenly, urgent missive from the borderland is delivered into the palace and causes great upset. Wen Ruohan has finally launched his attack. His campaign comes without warning and is brutal and swift. Within half a day, the city of Yiling is ransacked and occupied. No longer the most pressing matter, Wei Ying is sent back to Hanguang-fu without interrogation. On his way back to the princely manor, he sees out the carriage window that the pastry shop he frequents has been seized and closed by the magistrate. He realizes immediately that his cover is at risk and that Lan Qiren may have summoned him to the palace for interrogation. Such being the case, it must mean they don't have enough proof. Still, his position has become precarious.

Wei Wuxian by now understands that he alone had given Wen Ruohan the means to overtake Yiling so quickly and therefore responsible for the hundreds and thousands of deaths that happened. At the entrance of the manor, Wei Wuxian is stopped by the sight of a beggar huddled by the side of the road. The beggar is disheveled but is wearing a ragged hat that has an almost unnoticeable plum blossom stitched along the edge. Pretending to offer the beggar money, Wei Wuxian crouches by the man, allowing a secret message to be passed between them. The beggar thanks him for his generosity and limps off into the busy streets of the capital. The missive contains very specific instructions that chill Wei Wuxian to the bone: your old reporting station is discovered, end all communications; the war is nigh; terminate Lan Wangji posthaste and return to Nevernight.

WWX returns to Hanguang-fu feeling numb, only to find that Lan Wangji has entered the palace after being summoned urgently. The rest of the manor is confused as to what could be the reason since they were not told what has happened. Wei Wuxian realizes that news of the war has not been publicized and does not reveal what he knows to others in the harem. He asks Jiang Yanli to help him prepare dinner for Lan Wangji when he returns, as he will likely to be hungry, and that Wei Wuxian himself would like to prepare most of the meal.

Wei Wuxian knows that in a head on fight, Lan Wangji and himself are evenly matched. To kill him, he needs to catch Lan Wangji off guard. The food is laced with a mild sedative that will put Lan Wangji to sleep. After dark, Wei Wuxian will take his life.

Lan Wangji arrives home with the grave new of Qishan's attack. Everyone is shocked and horrified, including Wei Wuxian who puts on an admirable act. Understandably, Lan Wangji is more sullen than usual, and after plying him with some tea and congee, Wei Wuxian suggests that Lan Wangji rests for the night. Lan Wangji falls a sleep in his arms and Wei Wuxian makes up his mind:

I should kill him now, nice and swift, so he may never know how much I have lied to him. How much I will still betray him.

WWX holds his dagger over LWJ's throat and he just... Do it, you fucking coward! Kill him! ... can't.

All along, Xue Yang was right and Wei Wuxian has just been lying to himself.

- All jokes aside, shixiong, be careful. You're falling for your mark. - I am not falling for my mark. - Oh really? So it's all manipulation? You're not making sweet love to your darling prince every night?

As if taking Lan Wangji to bed was the start of his problem...Wei Wuxian had fallen for him long before that.

So, because there is no way out, Wei Wuxian gets up, puts on his black robes, picks up Suibian and leaves.

He can't complete his mission - he's failed Wen Ruohan. He can't stay to face his mistakes or correct the wrongs - he's betrayed Lan Wangji. He is both ashamed of himself for the destruction he's caused and frustrated that he doesn't have the guts to see it through. The night is dark and curfew has long since passed. The streets of the capital are empty and still, and he is a swift lonesome figure. Suddenly, he feels the wind shift behind him, and a voice calls out, "Leaving so soon?"

Wei Wuxian spins around, sword drawn.

"Lian... Lianfang-jun?"

Meng Yao stands before him dressed in a smart, narrowed-sleeved outfit, all pretenses from his day-time garbs gone. "We've been watching you for a while now, Wei Wuxian. You did not disappoint."

"We?"

"Heya."

Wei Wuxian turns back the other way and exclaims in utter disbelief: "Xue Yang?? You work for Gusu?!"

Xue Yang scoffs, "Bitch please, I don't work for anyone. I was just sick and tired of Wen Ruohan's bullshit."

Meng Yao lays it out plainly for him. "For years now Wen Ruohan has been sending spies amongst our ranks. I've been steadily investigating and keeping tracks. If we are to uproot them, we must be thorough. I discovered your identities some times ago, but I kept quiet. Xue Yang may be a rat bastard " - hey! - "but you, you're different."

Wei Wuxian stands his ground. "You're right. I am different. I am not Xue Yang, and I won't work for Gusu. Qishan took me in and raised me. I owe Wen Ruohan my life. If you won't let me leave, you'll have to let me die."

Meng Yao chuckles, "Yes, Qishan did take you in. But do you remember Dafan Mountain, Wei Wuxian? It's greenery, its waters, its people?"

Wei Wuxian frowns. "What of it?"

Meng Yao tsks, "What? The honourable man forgetting who truly saved his life?"

"He was a child," a third voice joins in. "It's not strange that he does not remember."

And from the shadows comes forth a figure shrouded in a heavy cloak. The voice belies a woman, and as she turns, the light of the moon casts serendipitously onto her stoic face. It is not a face that Wei Wuxian immediately recognizes, but those eyes, always too serious for her delicate features… he remembers those eyes.

"Wen Qing…"

It turns out Wei Wuxian has been under suspicion for longer than he ever anticipated, and it turns out Meng Yao is more of a mastermind than anyone ever gave him credit for. He has his motives, and Wen Qing has her own. She is her father's ambassador to Gusu and together the goal is to dispose of Wen Ruohan and instigate peaceful reign under Wen Qing's father. Even Xue Yang jumps in at some point, casually throwing out: c'mon, shixiong, even you have to admit, Wen Ruohan is crazy.

Shut up Xue Yang, as you if you can talk. How many people have you killed? Does your daozhang know?

Xiao Xingchen has nothing to do with this and you will keep him out of it!

Wei Wuxian, "I will help stop the war, but you have to promise me, you won't take Wen Ruohan's life. I owe him everything I am today."

Wen Qing, "He is my family. My father will treat him with kindness. There are more people in court against this war than you know. Wen Ruohan holds all the military power, so few dare to speak against him. However, once it is clear that his victory is not assured, it will be easier to call his fitness to rule into question."

Wei Wuxian clutches Suibian anxiously. "What will you have me do?"

Meng Yao gives him a half smile, wary. "I’m afraid you're not going to like my answer. Come with me."

Meng Yao leads Wei Wuxian to a secluded residence. It looks like a normal city home. There is candlelight still burning despite the late hours.

Wei Wuxian enters it trepidatiously, wondering if Meng Yao is leading him into a trap.

"Jiang-shushu?! Taishi?!"

Inside, Jiang Fengmian and Lan Qiren sit together sipping on midnight tea.

Lan Qiren nods at Meng Yao approvingly. "A-Yao."

Meng Yao bows, "Huangshu."

Wei Wuxian falls to his knees. "Jiang-shushu, I swear I never thought to harm the Jiang family -"

Jiang Fengmian sighs, "All of that is inconsequential now. What is important is the actions you take to correct your mistakes."

Wei Wuxian shakes his head. "I will not kill Wen Ruohan."

"And we're not asking you to. We do, however, need a man closest to him." Lan Qiren interjects. "A-Yao has spies but none of them have been able to get to the nucleus of his power."

Wei Wuxian's stomach drops. No... "You want me to spy for you?"

"Well it is what you're trained for, isn't it? You're rather good at it." Meng Yao tilts his head.

"Wen Ruohan will never believe me if I just return to QIshan like this."

"No naturally not. Your 'cover' will be revealed. Tomorrow, I will lead soldiers to Hanguang-fu for your arrest. You'll fight your way out. Those men will not know this is a ruse, they will give you a real fight, and in turn, you will kill anyone who stands in your way."

Wei Wuxian hesitates. "Those are Gusu's men, Gusu's soldiers. You would..."

"I would." Meng Yao's voice is hard. "Desperate times calls for desperate measures. Their families will be cared for and generously compensated, but their sacrifice will allow all of Gusu to survive. This is why when the war is over, you must disappear. Wei Wuxian will cease to exist. Your actions today and from this day forth will leave no traces in the history books. No one shall ever know of Dafan Wen and Gusu's alliance. For there to be peace, Dafan-fanwang's claim to Qishan's throne must not be tainted by usurpation nor collusion with outside forces. Similarly, I do not want Xichen's rule to be besmirched by the things I am forced to do to protect his throne."

"So I'm just...the scapegoat?"

"Not if you disappear. Before Nevernight is seized, I will send you a warning, and you must extract yourself from the city in a timely manner. If you do not, you will certainly be executed for your crimes."

Wei Wuxian sits back onto his heels, like a thousand stones in his heart weighing him down. "And... Lan Zhan?"

Lan Qiren twitches at his nephew's name.

But Meng Yao's sharp, fox-like eyes soften incrementally. "For this plan to work, the less people that know of your real mission the better. Eventually... I will tell him the truth, but to tell him the truth would be the whole truth."

"I understand. I never expected him to forgive me anyway."

Wei Wuxian returns to Hangung-fu and get back in bed to an obliviously drugged Lan Wangji. He holds him tight, kisses his hair, and cries the rest of the night.

The next day, right at the scheduled time, Wei Wuxian is sitting in the garden with Lan Wangji, Jiang Yanli and A-Yuan when the officers of the magistrate and the imperial guards come to arrest Wei Wuxian. [Detailed snippet here]

Wei Wuxian wounds and kills many of the officers and imperial guards and flees from Hanguang-fu with Lan Wangji hot on his tail. As planned, Wei Wuxian fires an arrow which directly hits Lan Wangji in the chest, throwing him off his horse. It is not a lethal wound, but looks hella nasty.

At the same time, Jiang Fengmian informs his son Jiang Cheng that "Wei Wuxian is a Qishan spy." Furious and hurt Jiang Cheng joins in the chase party. This all culminates in a show down where Wei Wuxian is seen "tossing" Jiang Cheng down the side of a cliff before escaping. A mangled corpse is found in Jiang Cheng's clothing and the young general is declared dead. The royal court sighs: it seems Wei Wuxian had deceived all of them, from the Jiangs who took him in, and to the prince who loved him. What an atrocious monster this Wei Wuxian is indeed.

"I don't believe it," confesses Jiang Yanli to Qin Su and Luo Qingyang as the three of them stand by Lan Wangji's sick bed.

Mianmian has taken to wearing armour on the daily now, since Lan Wangji has been incapacitated. Someone has to protect us, and I'm not leaving it to chance. Indeed her Jingyi and Qin Su's Kaisong are three years old, and A-Yuan no more than a month.

"Yanli, I know he and you had been close as brother and sister, but that Wei Wuxian was a spy! He did...heavens knows what he did, but look at our husband now. Dianxia would not be like so if it weren't for him." Qin Su tries to reason with her.

Jiang Yanli merely shakes her head. "Wangye is alive, that is enough proof for me."

Mianmian catches on quickly. "You mean..."

"I do. Spy or not, A-Xian loves our dianxia, because if he doesn't, that arrow would have been through the head."

Wei Wuxian returns to Qishan and his story is believed. Though his attempted assassination was unsuccess, Wen Ruohan does not punishment him due to the many successes his spying had helped Qishan to have. To test his loyalty however, Wen Ruohan requests Wei Wuxian "serve" him the way he "served" Lan Wangji [detailed snippet here]. Wei Wuxian, trained and hardened, plays his part to perfection. If initially it is meant to be a test, then perhaps the emperor of Qishan discovers some unexpected sadistic satisfaction through the process, for he keeps the young man in his bed for the rest of the night. The next morning, Wei Wuxian extracts himself from his new mark's slumbering form to call for some water and towels. A maid with a bowed head approaches him and whispers: "A-Qing greets Wei-gongzi. Is Chenqing well?"

Chenqing is Wei Wuxian's code name that Meng Yao has set up for him. Wei Wuxian realizes immediately that this A-Qing is one of Meng Yao's little spies. "Chenqing is well," Wei Wuxian whispers back. Then in a louder voice, he orders, "Prepare water and towels, bixia and myself require baths." A-Qing becomes Wei Wuxian's primary line of communication to Gusu.

Meanwhile, Jiang Cheng wakes up in an unfamiliar place and is greeted by Nie Huaisang - Jiang-xiong is awake! - Meng Yao, and to his utter shock a blind Nie Mingjue.

Meng Yao is only a little apologetic. "I suppose your father should have warned you, but we wanted the act to be believable, and frankly, Jiang-xiao-jiangjun, you are not an accomplished liar."

"What the hell are you talking about?"

"What I'm talking about, Jiang-xiao-jiangjun, is we better catch you up to speed. Welcome to the Sunshot Campaign.

Also I pointed out this new trend earlier where ppl will literally be like: "I think I read an interview where MXTX said -" to try & legitimize the biggest fucking lies and then when they get called out on it being bs, they're like: "I SaiD i ThinK noT thAt i wAs sUre >:-/". They're out there writing "metas" like: "MXTX came to me in a dream and told me jc publicly called WWX the enemy of the entire cultivation world bc he was trying to use reverse psychology on everyone and restore WWX's reputation. He strategized and led the siege because he was running a special rescue mission for WWX & the Wen Refugees. He was going to prevent them from getting killed by the other cultivators by killing them first 🥺. At the end of the book WWX broke up with LWJ bc LWJ disrespected his brOthEr. He lives in Lotus Pier serving jc forever. jc is not a h0mophobe, he's pregnant with Lan Xichen's child :D ".

I can't help but dislike lan xichen because he called wei wuxian a mistake. I know he's a good character and he had ever reason to be upset, but something about that conversation just bothers me. I don't know why it does.

​Hm, I get you. I think this is a clear example of a character's actions having a different impact on the reader than on the plot.

Plot-wise, Xichen's reaction is 100% justified. He a worried older brother. He knows LWJ loves WWX and has been rejected by him. He is concerned that LWJ would get his heart broken again. It is an understandable concern. When you look at everything objectively, we have no reason to be angry at LXC for his reaction.

But the readers have just gone through 100 chapters of people just having a go at WWX for every fucking thing, whether it is his fault or not, with not a single apology in sight.

That's why we see many people so unreasonably pissed at LXC.

It is just another thing that WWX has to silently accept. When he was kid, he was called a bastard and abused. That abuse goes unacknowledged. The fall of LP is laid at his feet, he has to deal with it. He pays off his debt and goes through horrifying trauma, that goes unacknowledged too. He faces a lot of injustice and accusations (a lot of times those accusations are baseless and spiteful), he has to accept and brush it aside. He does this again and again. Not a single person acknowledges that it was wrong to put a man through this.

LXC then comes along to say WWX is LWJ's only mistake. WWX again brushes it aside and focuses on important matters. But it has to hurt. WWX loves LWJ at this point. He just as to accept that the entire Lan clan probably thinks the same (with good reason in their eyes but that doesn't change the fact that it will hurt) Then we have LQR at CR post canon asking everyone to stay away from WWX. He brushes it aside. Look, WWX understood that the juniors turned and walked away from him because of LQR's rule and they would meet anyways. But it was still another injustice. Remember this point for me, I will come back to it.

Everything, he just has to deal with and forget. Not one time does anyone acknowledge the shit people just carelessly hurl at WWX and forget about it.

WWX being WWX, he doesn't care and will probably continue to live happily. But he has taken a lot of hits with no resolution from everyone. By this stage, readers have reached saturation point with the amount of BS WWX has to put up with and forgive.

LWJ loves WWX and that is the only saving grace in this entire situation.

LXC is like the last straw off the camel's back, so to speak. This is another careless, hurtful comment flung at WWX in anger and WWX is just made to bear it.

It is natural to be a little pissed at LXC, even if it is unreasonable. After all, LWJ is the only person WWX has in his corner (aside from WN). By calling WWX LWJ's mistake, LXC essentially said WWX didn't deserve even that bit of happiness.

But that is a reader's emotional response to the story. It isn't actually LXC's character at fault. He is being perfectly reasonable given how much information he has.

The fact is, readers are invested in WWX by this point and we're being told -yeah people just fling accusations and abuses at the character we want you to love, no one apologizes for it, even the kind older brother thinks he's trash, but the guy we made you love is just gonna shrug it all off and be happy because that's just him. And you can't be a little bit mad about it.

Lmao, that's a bit of excellent writing but it is also immensely irritating.

Now, onto a more serious observation. WWX is essentially alone and socially isolated at this point. Before his death, he had WQ, WN, and the remnants with him.

Post canon, he only has LWJ and WN and even WN rightfully chooses to live his own life.

We love and trust LWJ but that man has a rock solid support system. A brother, an uncle, a sect, society's respect, status, and wealth.

WWX has none of that. As attached readers, we're asked to trust a beloved character into a family where - one important member thinks WWX is a mistake and the other actively tries to keep him away from other sect members.

Then we're asked to trust that LWJ is all WWX will ever need. I can tell you- in marriage, you need a few people other than your spouse to stay in your corner if there's conflict. Even if the conflict is minor. The situation here is - WWX lacks a support system outside of LWJ. LWJ's family and the society as a whole will consider it ABSOLUTELY HIS FAULT if things go even a little sideways.

That, nonny, is something that people may realize and feel very uncomfortable about. That may be one of the reasons why LXC words hit a little harder. Because of course, the sect leader and brother's first concern is gonna be LWJ if there's an event where LWJ needs protecting from WWX.

But who protects WWX if he, in an unlikely event, needs protecting from LWJ?

(I want to make it clear that I don't consider WWX weak or vulnerable. He can take care of himself even if the entire world turns again him. and he certainly won't face any issues with lwj by his side. But it is a situation that can be a tad troubling if you look too deeply. )

Lan Wangji; Expressions

Let’s look at two contrasting scenarios.

Scenario 1:

When WWX first woke up after barely surviving without food, water, a fever, injuries and being stuck in a cave with an ancient monster; Madam Ew Yu barges in, rages against a dead woman, spews toxic bs and demands JC to come over to stand by her.

What does JC do? He complies without question.

Scenario 2:

When WWX is standing before the cultivation world a second time; when thousands of people are demanding for his head a second time over crimes that were never his fault to begin with, LQR calls LWJ to stand by him.

What does LWJ do? He stands by WWX unflinchingly.

Ppl say WWX is ‘oblivious’, as if he’s solely to blame. But I disagree! You know why? Well, let’s look at one of the things that makes us love LWJ.

His character development.

One of the biggest most heart-touching parts of his character development is him learning. He learns from his mistakes and even when life is cruel to him, he learns from it too.

Since young, the novel has alrdy explicitly stated that he’s stoic, taciturn, unreadable. Whenever I think about how the novel compares his looks to ‘jade’, I don’t see that as a description for perfection, I see it as the opposite. Comparing LWJ to ‘jade’ is imperfect in the most humane way possible: he struggles to express himself, particularly to WWX, someone who gradually became one of the most treasured person in his life.

WWX is shown numerous times approaching LWJ with friendship & affection, and LWJ, who again is already notorious for being unreadable, keeps denying them. So, can you rlly blame WWX for misunderstanding his intentions afterwards?

There’s a distinct line between reader knowledge & character knowledge. Put yourself in WWX’s shoes with only the latter. Wouldn’t you have reacted the same way, if not possibly worse?

And this continues throughout WWX’s first life. LWJ continues to struggle with expressing himself to WWX. And expressing oneself involves taking action. LWJ hesitated in doing as such and it costed him a back full of scars + 13 years of mourning.

BUT! Come post-13 years and what’s the first thing he does when WWX returns?

He takes action.

When JC tried to whip WWX, he stood in front of him and deflected Zidian. When WWX is being chased by dogs, he protects him from them. When WWX is hurt and cornered in Jinlintai, he doesn’t hesitate to fight out of there and carry him to safety. When the second BM siege happened, as stated above, he didn’t waver as he chose to stand by WWX and aid him in leading the corpses away.

He went from struggling to express himself to proving he’s reliable & earning WWX’s trust through actions. He actively asserts that he not only trusts WWX but will also stand by him through his actions and words.

Looking at LWJ, who learns from his mistakes and shortcomings by taking action; in a world like MDZS where so many of its problems could’ve been solved sooner had someone done something instead of sit on their asses, too caught up in their own issues & only caring when shit inevitably hit the fan and blew up in their faces; that, that is what allows his character & it’s development to have so much impact.

Time and again, whenever WWX is in strife, he doesn’t hesitate to take action.

So yes, at first, LWJ was a treasured jade. Kept smooth, flawless, cold and unreadable behind glass.

But now? Now he’s a jade that’s imperfect, he might even have a few cracks but he’s finally found himself treasured & cared for in the warm hands of someone else.

I hate it when JC is such a presence in a fic even when he isn't a character. like, he never appears, the only characters who appear are LWJ and WWX, and still for some reason every third sentence of WWX's thoughts is about JC and it's always like "JC would be annoyed by me doing this thing" "JC would hate to see me do this". WWX thinks more about JC in one chapter than he does in all of canon and it's always JC's judgy BS. the whole time I just wanna go "shut the fuck up about the grape"

It's also weird to me because like... do the authors not grasp that if WWX is constantly obsessing over how angry or annoyed JC would be that WWX is doing a thing that makes him happy that's a really fucking bad sign...? Like, if JC's constant insults and hatred of anything that makes WWX happy have gotten so deep into WWX's head that WWX keeps thinking about them even when JC isn't there and comes up with his own to kill his enjoyment of what he's doing, that's bad! That's a problem! That tells me that JC fucked up WWX's head, it's not cute or affectionate or whatever the fuck the author thinks it is! This is not what a healthy relationship looks like! If a person can't fully enjoy what they're doing because they keep thinking about how someone else thinks it's dumb or annoying or whatever, that is what we call a problem.

Let me start with the easiest thing to answer. V and Jk are two members from BTS whose relationship is shockingly real to me. I avoided writing their names or their cp name out cuz I didn't want my pinned post to show up in those searches. Unlike with ggdd, I never got the impression they'd be okay with speculations about them, though. So I don't ever feel the need to analyze or discuss about them. I just quietly believe in and support them.

You got xfx and mtjj right. Xfx is the official fan name for XZ's solo fans. Mtjj is not an official fan name, though, i.e. Yibo or his company never made it official, as far as I know. It stands for motojiejie which means motorcycle sisters, there's also mtgg = motorcycle brothers but you'll mostly see mtjj. Bxg is what ggdd's cp fans are called. It stands for BoXiaoGirls/Guys. It can also stand for baixiangguo which means "passion fruit". And there's a third meaning which I don't know but has something to do with turtles and which is why you're likely to see bxg refer to themselves as turtles. Bjyx is ggdd's main, fanmade cp name. It was coined back in April 2018, after XZ and WYB only just got confirmed as the actors who get to play WWX and LWJ. One of the rules in the bjyx supertopic on weibo is that you can't switch their "roles". And those were solely based on wang/xian but I suppose once fans realized that ggdd is actually real and their dynamic is vastly different from wang/xian, they came up with different cp names for different dynamics. There's also zsww and lsfy. (Sidenote; if I remember correctly, bjyx means “to make your special someone smile”. Zsww means “lord over a district/castle” and lsfy means “chain reaction”) And as far as I know, zsww fans are called little bandits and lsfy fans are called baby lotus. I apologize if me explaining this makes you feel weird in any way (cuz this fandom separation is dumb af) - I just wanna give you any info I have cuz you might come across some of this, at least. Anyway, the most common abbreviations you'll see; bxg = ggdd cp fans and bjyx = ggdd's cp name. There's also bjyxszd 博君一肖是真的 which means "bjyx is real" or bjyxszd 并肩于学山之巅 which means "side by side atop the snowy summit" and is a phrase that bxg use to hide the first phrase in plain sight, so to say.

I don't know what it's called but there's actually also a supertopic on weibo for XZ and WYB solo fans who believe that ggdd is real but are still only solo fans. So truthfully, you can't really generalize that. Some solo fans do believe in ggdd and are supportive but not necessarily openly. I (like to) think most solo fans are just dedicated to their idol and don't care about anything or anyone else and that's it. The rest, though... yeah, those are the obnoxious ones. Who made up ridiculous conspiracy theories about how Yibo and his company are responsible for what happened last February to gg. Or who make up theories about how XZ only got as successful as he is because he copied Yibo. They really want to believe that ggdd aren’t special to each other or that they even hate one another. So they come up with the dumbest bs to e.g. vilify XZ. Like, about a year ago, mtjj got mad at gg cuz they thought he, as dd's boyfriend, must have forced dd to sell one of his motorcycles. When Yibo uses kadian, they think he just does it to bait cp fans. But when XZ uses kadian, he's being the worst, most careless boyfriend and how tf could he put Yibo in danger like that. And yes, I've seen the same hateful mtjj spout such contradictory nonsense. It can be quite hilarious, ngl. I only follow decent solo stans so I truthfully don't know what the newest sh-t is that antis/solos have come up with.

When it comes to bxg... yes, there are a lot of supporters but also way too many who seem to be unable to separate ggdd from novel!wang/xian. They so badly want only bjyx - that dynamic - to be real that they constantly feel the need to "change reality" to make it happen by e.g. misgendering gg, drawing him smaller than dd and/or more feminine, making assumptions about him and his character that are simply untrue but fit their preferred dynamic so they keep spreading those assumptions. They way they view XZ is wrong and beyond disrespectful and yet, they call themselves fans. I genuinely hope you'll never even have to see any thing of the sort. I don't actually know anything about bxg, wanting to combine the solo fandoms xD I guess, ideally that would be desirable but I wonder if that's even possible.

About recs, I could recommend you some twt accounts or on here, gif makers and fanartists that I like and follow but I don't follow any ggdd blogs that make a lot of text posts. And just to be clear, I don't make many text posts myself either. I stay away from rumors (unless they become more than that) and from stalker info and from all the reaching, too. You might find it interesting, I don't know, but me, I see no point, mulling over any and every minute connection between ggdd that may or may not even be real. It gets too invasive or ridiculous imo. I actually also stay away from all that recent behind the scenes footage of ggdd because I highly disapprove of the way it was acquired. I only comment on things about them that I consider reasonable and possibly noteworthy and that preferably come from the men themselves. And occasionally, I gush about how cute and perfect they are together. Sorry I can't be more helpful with this last question >.<

what if the events from the books where narrated from Su She’s perspective tho?

I mean, he’s average and skittish, being constantly told meritocracy is real even when its not true and so on. as far as stories go... he’s starting off the plot as a forgettable character (mostly bc -I think- the story is told for the most part from wwx’s POV, but still)... but aren’t we all?

I’m talking those who aren’t geniuses or breathtakingly gorgeous... we’re just average. can he be relatable if we were to get to know him since the beginning, as a 15-16 year old? would we grow envious and jealous like him when constantly compared to other, more talented people who happen to be more charismatic than us?

many books start with a similar premise and main character and not all of them are framed/narrated in a way that makes them the villain. if you, as a reader, where to be placed in Su She’s shoes, would you sympathize with his point of view or not? he did terrible things, of course, I’m not here to argue against that, but I would be curious to see how he came to be the person he ended up becoming all the same!

I’m just curious! meta is interesting and character analysis is always fun!

okay! tma au time!

so i’m gonna start off by saying jgs is elias in this au. i dont care what you say about elias’ sexy voice or charisma or whatever, they’re both slimy and evil. also gertrude, so to speak, is wen chao. (bear with me pls)

most other people are assistants. i think? i mean lwj, wwx, jzx and a few others are?

(my brain says it would be funny to have lwj as sasha and su she as not!sasha but lwj deserves better than that)

i’m not really gonna follow the plot of tma bc rip

anyway!

the assistants are just kind of vibing in the archives when they discover that wrh, who’s like the chief of police and is an avatar of the slaughter, is actively killing people for the fears bc acab

does he have a deal with jgs and that’s why wen chao is the archivist? yeah probably. wen chao is the archivist bc daddy had connections. wrh put jgs in charge and sent wen chao to make sure everything was running how wrh wanted it to be

yeah, wrh wants to have control over all the fears or something idk

so wen chao is the archivist. but unlike gertrude who purposefully made things really messy and a nightmare he’s just really incompetent. wen zhuliu is the avatar of the distortion and theyre tight bc zhuliu owes wrh or whatever.

so the wrh stuff comes out and a bunch of people band together to try and bring justice to him and thus we have the sunshot campaign

maybe all the families have their own fears? the lans are the lonely and the nies are the hunt. jfm and yzy are avatars of the bad parenting idk. 

anyway, before they took any action, wwx had already started investigating bc wen chao is a lil bitch and very suspicious

while investigating wwx gets sucked into the archivist stuff and ends up being thrown into the tunnels under the institute with wen zhuliu who then proceeds to do distortion fuckery for three months

he finally escapes and kills wen zhuliu using the powers he’d begun to develop in the tunnels (it’s so strange that he stumbled across a tape recorder which he’d named chenqing and after that he kept finding statements,,, so strange)

he’s killed wen zhuliu so he goes off and kills wen chao and now he’s the archivist whoo

he joins up with the others and they go kill wrh, sweet it’s all dealt with but jgs starts spreading shit about how all the wens are terrible and must be killed (including wen qing’s family who are like paramedics who work ed with the police, so not cops but forced to work w/ them)

while jgs is touting that bs jgy is in the background slowly manipulating wwx into getting all the different marks (idk what they were called) from the different fears

he gets kidnapped by xue yang who is nikola and spends a month getting moisturised by him and told that wow he’s so impressive killing the other avatars,, im gonna follow in your footsteps (let’s say that avatars have a truce not to kill each other in this world. like they’re all equals and pretty much the same strength so there’s no real point in killing each other or trying to kill each other)

wwx escapes and im kinda annoyed we dont have enough bad guys for wwx to properly get his marks but whatever

he goes back to the archives and they come up with a plan to kill xue yang and they go off and do it

imma let you pick what happens here. does jzx die? do we let xxc and sl have the spotlight and this is where their story comes into play?

whatever happens, wwx goes into a coma for thirteen months and enter extremely hot avatar of the end who helps him wake up (mo xuanyu?? mo xuanyu.)

he goes back to the archives and lwj has been taken by the lonely while he was gone so he’s working with his uncle again (the lans are the lukases and i take no criticism)

side note: in this au wwx gets two phobias! (gee wwx! how come you get to have two phobias?)

so mr spider was definitely a thing and so were the dogs

while wwx was on the streets he found this book and he’d just started learning how to read so he decided to practise but then some other kid stole it from him and he ended up watching him get eaten by a giant spider also the dogs attacked him bc no rest for wwx

does wwx pretend not to be aware?? i’d say yes. if not bc of trauma then bc it’s super obvious and the look on lwj’s face when the jane prentiss equivalent attacks and wwx says wow those worms were a lil weird huh? is so funny to him

anyway lwj was in the know the whole time and he probably moved out of his family home and joined the archives so he could investigate jgs but then wwx dies and hes like aight yeah imma feel real lonely right now

so wwx comes back and jc, who had been the host of ghost hunt CW (cultivation world) and was attacked by an evil ghost, tries to kill him

after their fight and subsequent freedom from the slaughter and the eye (sans eye removing bc fuck that) jc moves in with jyl

im sorry that what the girlfriends isnt a thing here but i love the idea of a jyl who just isnt scared of anything because she’s seen death and just can’t get scared anymore

she still dates an archives employee though. it’s jzx, who is kinda like tim in this au i guess? did he die in that explosion? (i want to say no so jyl would be happy but if he dies and she’s mourning him and jc and wwx fought,, well now wwx is alone for bad decision times)

one day wen qing comes up and is like pls help my brother, he’s been taken by the buried so wwx runs off and finds breekon and hope (su she and jin zixun), kill jin zixun and steals the coffin

the rest of the wens are in hiding atm so he doesnt have to like monkey chain all the wens out of the coffin 

so wwx goes inside the coffin and rescues wen ning (bc jon and daisy’s relationship was super sweet)

they get out and immediately run away with wen qing and the rest of the wens

where do they go? wen qing’s cute cottage in scotland (or cultivation world equivalent)

so they’re living as farmers and wwx is getting sick bc he can’t get statements from here but he has to protect them bc the jins keep attacking (what are the jins working for?? idk. the vast? the dark? who knows, not me)

anyway lwj comes and is like you have to come back to gusu/the archives and wwx is like no! bc he has to protect the wens

so lwj is like fuck ive gotta move my timeline up and find a way to off jgs

jgy ends up doing it and lwj is like /: my revenge,,

everyone is happy! jgs is dead, wrh is dead! but then jgy starts stirring up rumours about wwx and lwj is honestly so tired of this shit

and bc people keep attacking the wens, wwx manages to collect the rest of the marks from the other fears

jgy sends his letter: dear wwx sorry for the deception yada yada yada

but wwx is aware of that shit and just kills himself before he can finish reading it

whoo apocalypse averted but lwj comes to help with the wens just in time for his burial so not whoo?

anyway we know wwx isn’t dead and he’s just vibing in another coma or something equivalent (why does he die twice in this au? bc idk how s5 will end but it’s a tragedy horror podcast and i want them to be happy so he gets to die twice)

anyway, the avatar of the web, mister manipulation and secrets extraordinaire nie huaisang is very pissed after jgy manipulated his brother into becoming an avatar of the slaughter and decides to just expose the dude

lxc kills him bc he deserves to kill jgy tbh,,, manipulative toad

nhs also restores wwx’s rep bc they were besties in uni and i refuse to accept anything else

he rocks up to the cottage/farm and is like hey guys i helped clear wwx’s name and wen qing is like hes fucking dead what help were you? and nhs is like ?? he’s not dead

so they unbury him and lwj wakes him up through the power of love and all that jazz

anyway, wwx manages to do *insert super cool thing here* and gets rid of all the fears and they get a happy ending bc i really want them to have a happy ending

do they stay living on the farm/cottage with the wens?? no but they buy a cottage nearby and happily live there together raising rabbits and growing idk pumpkins

modern mdzs au where wei wuxian is a big name celebrity who gets cancelled due to his complicated relationship with the law (maybe he advocates for minority rights, like LGBT stuff, and the government isn’t cool with that?)

this got way longer than i intended it to be the rest will be under the cut

so instead of dealing with the pr nightmare he fucks off to some farm town where the only ones who know who he is are his two best friends from college, Wen Qing and Wen Ning. The Wen siblings had to move back home after college to help with their grandparents’ farm and Wen Qing decided to open a small clinic there while Wen Ning helps with the actual farm stuff.

So Wei Wuxian becomes a farmer in a town with a population of like 200 people.

but like, before going ghost he tweets something cryptic like “thank you for all the good times and sorry i wasn’t enough...” and so after a year or so of hearing nothing from or about wwx everyone assumes he died and it was covered up

wwx would still go visit his family during the holidays and important events like jin ling’s birthday but he would always make sure not to be seen

he thinks the sns posts that claim he’s dead are kinda funny (mostly due to inaccuracy of facts/assupmtions) he also has a folder full of memes about his death/disappearance that he sends to jiang cheng whenever jc gets mad at him

so after 13 years of being out of the spotlight he decides he wants to be closer to his family and move back, he assumes he’s changed enough in the 13 years to be mostly unrecognizable and as a precaution uses a fake name in public (Mo Xuanyu)

at some point, Mo Xuanyu, is introduced to Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji and he assume they don’t recognize him because they don’t react to meeting him. but it does seem like lwj is very interested in getting to know mo xuanyu.

which kinda pisses wwx off, he tried so hard in high school to get lwj to notice him and be his friend, and now he’s suddenly friendly. did lwj really hate him that much?

so after a few strictly platonic one-on-one outings with lwj (they platonically hold hands at the beach so neither gets pulled away by the waves) wwx is getting a little frustrated that lwj seems to refuse to call him by name, it’s always “you” or nothing

until the day that lwj drank some wine at family dinner, lwj obviously passes out and wwx offers to take him to the guest room so he can sleep it off

cue yanli commenting about how good of a boyfriend a-xian is being (and jc making a noise in loving disgust)

yanli’s comment plays over and over again in wwx as he’s carrying lwj upstairs. all he can think about is how much lwj would probably hate him if he found out that he had lied about who he was and was actually lwj’s annoying friend from high school

so he lays lwj down and tucks him in and, in a moment of weakness, he kisses lwj. lwj’s eyes flutter open and wwx is immediately ready for lwj to get mad at him and to say sorry

but instead drunken lwj pulls wwx in to cuddle and wwx is ready to assume this is because lwj’s drunk but figures he should enjoy it while he can

after awhile wwx moves to stand up and leave lwj to sleep but lwj pulls him closer and says the most shocking thing wwx has ever heard

“Wei Ying, stay.”

and so, wwx cuddles up to lwj with his heart bursting, lwj knew and still wanted to be close to him

cue post-drunken sleep shenanigans where wwx and lwj play like just dance or mario party with the fam (jyl, jzx, jl, jc, and lxc (because this is a xicheng au)) 

after that wwx offers to walk lwj home to make sure he gets there safe but after he’s tucked lwj in, lwj won’t let him leave. so wwx tells himself he’ll stay until lwj falls asleep and then leave but lwj is warm and his bed is soft. before wwx realizes it he jolted awake when lwj practically jumps out of bed when he wakes up in the morning.

cue that scene from the novel where wwx teases lwj by implying they drunken banged

and although they don’t talk about what happened that night they grow closer regardless

they go on a couple more definitely not-dates and then wei wuxian gets noticed by a fan, then a couple fans, and then suddenly #weiwuxianisntdead is trending on twitter, and then he doesn’t hear from lwj for days...

normally, it wouldn’t worry wwx too much, lwj didn’t really use his phone, but then he doesn’t come to family dinner. and when wwx ask lxc about it he says “lwj just thought you need sometime alone”

and now wwx is confused, he thought lwj already knew but maybe he didn’t actually? maybe lwj just mistook mxy for wwx while drunk but didn’t do that while sober?

when in reality lwj meant that he thought wwx would want time to sort out being thrust back into the limelight without dealing with his not-boyfriend

they end up spending more time apart than either expected since both were waiting for the other to be ready to come to them

but eventually jiang cheng is done with his brother’s emotional bs because not only does he hate watching wwx be so forlorn but he also has to deal with lwj as well (everytime jc wants to hang out with his bf lxc suggests they invite lwj along because “he needs to leave the house” and jc begrudgingly can’t say no)

so jc and lxc set up lunch with both wwx and lwj but don’t say the other is going to be there and then they bail as soon as they know lwj and wwx aren’t going to run away

insert sappy conversation where they admit all of their feelings and laugh at how stupid they’ve been then they hold hands and kiss and stuff 

and they lived happily ever after. the end. :D
