A Brief Guide to Yachts
This is a continuation to my cultural education segment (aka my rich bitch guide).
The yacht is an invention of the 14th century Dutch. The Dutch used small, fast boats for chasing smugglers, pirates and criminals. Rich ship owners and merchants began using these small “jaghts” to sail out to celebrate their returning merchant ships.
The first yacht club in the world, called the Cork Water Club, was established in Ireland in 1720.
Some famous clubs include:
USA:
1. Annapolis Yacht Club: Surrounding the Spa Creek Bridge in Annapolis, the Club boasts over 75 wet slips and dry dockage. The club began in 1886 as an informal canoe club, and today has 1600 regular members active in social, racing, and cruising programs
2. Chicago Yacht Club: Founded in 1875, Chicago Yacht Club is one of the oldest and most respected yacht clubs in the world. The Club is home to more than 1,400 members, including a winning America’s Cup skipper, and Olympic medalists.
Italy:
1. Circolo Canottieri Aniene
2. Circolo degli Esteri
3. Compagnia della Vela
Canada:
1. Royal Canadian Yacht Club
2. Royal Vancouver Yacht Club
Yachts are most active in the summer months (May- August in the northern hemisphere) or the winter months. many yacht owners decide to keep the maximum number of guests onboard to 12 (plus crew) for chartering.
Different types of yachts:
Sailing Yacht: a yacht mainly propelled via wind and sails
Motor Yacht: a yacht propelled via one or more motors
Gulet Yacht: a hybrid yacht with both sails and motors
Open Yacht, Cruiser, Cabin Cruiser, Express Cruiser: an otherwise uncategorized standard yacht for cruising and entertaining
Luxury Yacht: a yacht that includes high-end finishes and features and the latest in modern performance technology. The term ‘luxury’ can precede any type of yacht, i.e. “luxury motor yacht”, “luxury sailing yacht”, etc.
Sports Yacht: a yacht geared towards fishing, water sports, or cruising with a sleeker design and more powerful motor for faster cruising speeds.
Catamaran Yacht: a yacht with two hulls (pontoons) often made of fiberglass that can be used in shallow waters.
The most popular destinations:
1. Monaco
2. The French Riviera
3. Greece
4. U.S. Virgin Islands
5. Palm Beach, Florida
6. Costa Smeralda, Italy
7. St. George’s Parish, Bermuda
8. Newport, Rhode Island
9. Nantucket, Massachusetts
10. Greater Victoria, Vancouver Island

Football club owner Shahid Khan's 95 metre Lürssen Kismet was delivered in 2014. On match days, a four-metre silver statue of a jaguar, its paw resting on a football helmet, graces the bow. Elsewhere, its sizeable foredeck has enough space for Khan's beloved football team, the Jacksonville Jaguars, to stage a practice.
Tumblr media
The 70 metre Feadship superyacht Joy features a deck that's wide enough to enjoy a tandem jog around. This yacht is all about exterior living, which includes making use of these ample decks with some great sporting facilities. A basketball and badminton court is set all the way forward on the owner's deck. This is complemented by her large gym and dedicated spa. All of this adds up to make Joy an ideal choice for those interested in a yacht with ample fitness, wellness and sporting amenities.

I had a magical last day in Istanbul. Highlights:
visited the Istanbul Archaeological Museum - truly such an incredible collection. One thing I love about this museum is how it didn't just display the finished artifacts; it told the whole story and highlighted the process. The exhibits talked about how the artists processed the clay and the gold they worked with. Even better, the exhibits highlighted the extraordinary amount of work it takes archaeologists to correctly handle an excavation site and get these priceless relics to the museum -- and then find out how old they are, and the historical context in which the artifacts and the people who made and used them lived. This attention to the process, the story, really hit me that all of these amazing artifacts that we see in museums, all of these enormous (heavy!) marble statues, and these beautiful pieces of pottery, were made by hand. Possibly dozens or hundreds of hands. That seems so special, in a world where so much is mass produced by machines. It makes me so happy to know that we are able to look at and admire something that was handmade by a person in the sixth century BC. I love that their work lived on so long after they did.
had a pleasant walk through the Sirkeci neighborhood, bought a giant cup full of delicious pomegranate seeds to eat while I walked, and had lunch at a little fish restaurant by the Eminonu docks :) anchovy platter and stuffed grape leaves!! Read more of The Historian and loved it.
did a ~2 hour cruise of the Bosphorus; the sight of the sun glittering on the sea was beautiful. Every time I travel, it's somewhere where I can go look at the ocean. It's a peculiar tragedy that I love the ocean and live in a landlocked state 😂 but actually - I was thinking about it today, and my love/hate (often heavy on the hate) relationship with Minnesota is part of what motivates me to travel so much, so it's all worked out for the best.
My favorite part of the time on the sea was predictably when the 4:30 PM call to prayer came out from the mosques while we were passing through Kadikoy. I love having that to tell the time; I love that 4:30 PM one especially because it's such a fun time of day here, with many people leaving work, the city streets busy with people, the golden late afternoon/early evening sunlight.
My official Last Thing was to go to a luxury hammam experience at Cagaloglu. This was definitely much fancier than the one I went to on my first night (and priced literally double), but wow it was amazing. It was beautiful and peaceful and serene. I got time in the sauna, bathed, scrubbed, and covered in a bubble treatment of thick, delicious-smelling bubbles, massaged, and my hair washed. Afterward, I got to sit in a beautiful indoor courtyard and have tea, Turkish sherbet (sweet drink), and eat Turkish delight. I love a lagoon/hammam/sento bathhouse experience. It was so relaxing. I actually felt like a princess.
I had dinner at my favorite kebab place that plays live music, and was given free tea and baklava for dessert :)) I love that so many restaurants here (and in Greece) give free tea and/or dessert - I really appreciate the hospitality.
Leaving for the airport in two hours! I have a flight to Paris, a roughly ~3 hour layover there, and then on home to Minneapolis. :)
I'm so grateful for this city and my time here. It's a very special place - right alongside Taipei and Kyoto for my favorite cities in the world. I'm so happy I finally got to visit.

The SS America, a remarkable ocean liner and cruise ship designed by the renowned naval architect William Francis Gibbs, had a rich history spanning 54 years from its construction in 1940 until its tragic shipwreck in 1994. In October 1992, the ship was sold with ambitious plans of transforming it into a luxurious five-star hotel ship off the coast of Phuket, Thailand. The grand vessel was renamed American Star and underwent significant modifications: its propellers were removed and placed on the deck at the bow, the funnel was painted red, and ladders were welded to starboard, all in preparation for the tow. In December 1993, American Star embarked on its final journey, leaving Greece under tow by the Ukrainian tugboat Neftegaz-67. However, fate had other plans for the majestic ship. While sailing in the Atlantic, the vessel encountered a fierce thunderstorm, causing the tow-lines to snap. Desperate efforts to reattach emergency tow-lines proved unsuccessful, leaving the ship adrift. In a daring rescue operation, the crew aboard American Star was evacuated by helicopter on 17 January 1994, just before the ship went aground in the Canary Islands at 6:15 am on 18 January. Amid ongoing discussions among the ship's owners, the towing firm, and the insurance companies, the once-grand vessel was left to the mercy of nature. Within the first 48 hours of grounding, the relentless pounding surf of the Atlantic mercilessly broke the ship in two, just past the second funnel. The ship's tragic fate was sealed, and it was officially declared a total loss on 6 July 1994.

Marmaris to Rhodes
Hard yards this morning having to pack everything away after 6 blissful days of being in the same room, albeit a room that moved.
After breakfast we had to run the customs gauntlet again to now leave Turkey 🙄 Despite the painful customs process here in Marmaris, we loved our time in Turkey and Im a bit sad it’s over. I know that sounds odd having essentially been in Greece for the last 5/6 days but I think we were so excited about getting on the gulets we missed the fact that our time in Turkey was pretty much done. And of course we’ve been on a Turkish boat while cruising around the Greek islands.
The ferry to Rhodes was a bit of an eye opener. I was surprised how many English tourists were on board. It’s a pretty quick trip, about an hour.
It was again chaotic at that other end having to get ourselves, our luggage and our bikes through customs but we were on our bikes and off by about midday.
Leaving the port was as to be expected, a bit busy but we were obviously causing somewhat of a stir and I saw a few people taking photos of us as we cycled past.
Sam had a favourite bakery that we stopped at about 9km in and it didn’t disappoint. We then turned inland and the cycling was really lovely, through pine forests and not much traffic.
It seems mine aren’t the only legs suffering today, it’s been a big two weeks. We stopped for lunch at a winery. The food was delicious and we did sample some of their wines, including a dry, not sweet moscato whose grapes originated from Egypt.
The ride then to our hotel was just shy of 30km and very pleasant. I knew we were in the old town so I was waiting for the nasty cobbled end to the ride that didn’t eventuate. We’re right next to the old town.
We were very spoiled tonight, our lovely friends Jo and Tony had paid for an upgrade to a suite but weren’t using the room as they now have friends joining them on Nyla. So they asked Sam to give us their suite. I could get used to travelling like this, very nice.
We had time for a quick swim (quick because it was freezing) and a rose and then we had a catch up to talk about the logistics for the next couple of days. It was then time to shower and change and we met up with Jo and Tony and their friends, Karen and Greg and went out for a delicious dinner. It’s pretty hard to get dining wrong in this part of the world.
Now we’re back luxuriating in our suite before I shortly crash into bed 😴
