XV Beacon Hotel - Boston, MA
15 Beacon Street | Boston, MA 02108 | 617-670-1500 The very first time I had the pleasure of staying at XV Beacon was back in 2015. I described the hotel as classic movie-star handsome, which it still is. Think Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, Cary Grant, and James Stewart. XV Beacon is the type of boutique hotel where the doorman smiles big as he swings open the door welcoming you to theâŠ

Read An Ebook DayÂ
Get lost in the world of a book, whether new or an old favorite, without the hassle of lugging it around, holding it up, or damaging it. Thatâs right, read an eBook!
Years ago there was a giant push to encourage reading among youth and adults alike, and that push has entered the modern age with International read an eBook day.
No more are we tied to reading books in the old format with two covers and hundreds of pages, no more do hundreds of trees have to die each year to bring literature to people from every walk of life.
With the invention of the eBook, we have reached the point where the wonder of reading is available to anyone with the computer or portable electronic device.
Itâs become a huge industry, with devices like Kindle, Nooks, and apps available on many types of devices like cell phones and tablets.
Learn about Read An eBook Day
Read An eBook Day is a day that encourages you to do exactly that. eBooks can easily be accessed within a few seconds. You donât need to head to your local book store or a library. By the time it takes you to finish reading this page, you could have your eBook chosen and you could be getting stuck right into it! But donât dash off just yet!
eBooks give you the ability to take the authors and stories you love with you anywhere and enjoy them at any time. Whether you are 30,000 feet in the air or you are curled up on your sofa, you can tuck into a great book.
If you have never tried reading an eBook before, this is definitely the perfect day for you to read your very first one. If you are a big eBook fan already, not only is Read An eBook Day a great day for you to start a new book, but you can also use this day to raise awareness and encourage other people to start reading eBooks as well. You can post messages on social media so that your friends, family members, and followers know that it is Read An eBook Day and the importance of participating.
History of Read an eBook day
The first major celebration of International read an eBook day was in 2014, and was put together by a major eBook distributor OverDrive. This company provides eBooks through many major locations but is best known for being the biggest provider of eBooks to libraries all over the country.
Its eBooks are supplied by thousands of publishers, including the best known of Penguin Random House, HarperCollins, Harlequin, Pursues, Wiley, and others. Chances are if youâve read an eBook from a library, it was supplied by OverDrive.
How to celebrate Read an eBook day
The most obvious way to celebrate is by, you guessed it, reading an eBook. But you can go so much further than that, take a bike ride with your tablet out to your favorite place and sit in the park, on the docks, in the forest, or wherever your favorite reading hideaway is and enjoy the lightweight convenience of reading your book on an electronic device.
Thatâs just one of the joys of an eBook, you can carry dozens or even hundreds of them around on a single compact electronic mobile device, which ways less than even the smallest of paperbacks.
Get together with your friends and talk about your favorite eBooks and where you discovered them, and even talk about what your first eBook was. In todayâs modern world itâs even possible that your first book outside of school and the library was read in an electronic format.
Reading an eBook allows you options totally unlike those of reading a normal book, wherewith a physical book youâd have to bring a light and a magnifying glass if the print was too small, with the mobile device you can just increase the font size and brighten the background.
You can even read an eBook in circumstances you couldnât read a normal book like tucked away under your blankets in the dark, no flashlight required. Internation read an eBook day is a tribute to the growing future of electronics in our lives, and theyâre now serving as the foundation of supplying educational, technical, and even entertainment-oriented books in every day and every format.
Even the instruction manuals that come with many of our new devices are PDF eBooks, and most video games no longer provide a physical book, itâs all online.
Another way to celebrate Read An eBook Day is to finally publish your own eBook so that other people can read it on this day! eBook publishing can appear somewhat of a mystery for those new to online publishing. There are lots of subtle complexities to making your novel launch a success, and professional book publishers are the main way to ensure that none of these procedures is missed. It can be easy to overlook the strategies and layout elements that must be implemented to make your work a best seller.
Finishing your novel is not the end of the story â literally. Itâs only the start of a bookâs journey from manuscript to book store. Have you decided on a book cover? Have you thought about your marketing schedule? Are you aware of your audience? These are the sort of things to consider on this day to help you take your content from hobbyist to professional, from your office drawer to the highest part of the eBook best-sellers list.
If youâre an aspiring author looking for a little guidance, why not take a creative writing course on Read An eBook Day? This will help you with all facets of composing a fictional work; youâll soon learn how to master your plot and develop your characters with various tutorials. How about the final draft of your book?
You may be surprised to understand how few publications online have had professional editing skills applied to them. Having your literature carefully proofread and adapted by a team of expert editors is an amazing way to make your work stand out of the crowds. These are all the sorts of steps you can take on this date, depending on where you are right now in the process.

______________________________
Background:
She was born in Boston, Massachusetts to Edmund Prescott and Paisley Prescott (neé Barclay). Her father, Edmund is an heir to a famous hotel called 'The Hera Hotel' in Boston while her mother, Paisley is the daughter of a socialite. Both of them come from old money families and met through the connections of their own families, the two were and still are happy with each other. After Paisley gave birth to Barbara's older sister, Marsha at the age of 23, they were happier than ever because they wanted to start a family of their own and... they did. Although they spoiled Marsha so much like other rich families, they don't teach her to be rude to people who are not rich like them, who don't have the luxury as them and they did the same teaching to Barbara. 4 years later, Paisley gave birth to Barbara and they treat her the same way as they treat Marsha. Growing up, Barbara was like a normal child as if she's not from a rich family. She's not snobbish but instead treats people who're not rich with equality and ignore the fact that they're not from rich families like her, because why would she care? It's not her business to care about it and to her, it's very rude to judge what they're from and their fortunes. Other than that, Her parents sent Barbara to Bullworth Academy when she was 11 so that she could have her education there. It was her father's decision because he used to attend there and wanted her to go to a school that isn't as luxurious nor filled with rich kids (except for the preps). Barbara didn't mind it because her sister Marsha is also a student at the academy, so she's not alone. At the academy, Barbara joined the preps and the rest as people say, is history
______________________________
Personality:
She doesn't care about how people who aren't rich are different from rich people, she thinks it's ridiculous. She wants her fellow preps to treat others the same way as they treat each other but that seems to backfire because she would get scoffs and even insults from them, she would just roll her eyes and say "you all are so ridiculous". A lot of people say that she's nice for a prep, which Barbara understands why they say "for a prep", because other preps aren't so... Nice and she wishes that they (the preps) would change their attitude but she doesn't think that they would in the future, but she feels there's hope for them to change. She helps others and sometimes stands up to a person who's getting bullied, she just hates seeing people getting bullied, it makes her uncomfortable. Barbara is a fashion girlie, she LOVES it and lives for it. She doesn't over-dress too much but she doesn't dress like a person who dressed themselves in the dark, she really likes to give fashion advice to someone and talk about fashion with Gord Vendome. She's confident about the way she is and everything that is going on, she doesn't shy away from anyone and she would be honest about them in front. She's a curious girl who wants to know more about someone who she thinks are kinda interesting, she would ask questions but if it makes them uncomfortable then she would stop and let them live their wonderful (or not-so-wonderful) day. She's also impatient but not as impatient as Pinky Gauthier, Barbara doesn't like waiting for 20-30 minutes and she would call them on her phone, telling them to hurry. But if she has a date and her boyfriend was late for, like, 15-20 minutes then she would tell him on her phone that she wants to cancel it because he's late, the reason for it is because she doesn't want to waste her time and doesn't want to wait for them for an HOUR. She can be very annoyed if someone cat-calls her or insults her for no reason or even tells her what to do if she's in a bad mood, she would answer them with insults while glaring at them. She judges people very easily based on their attitude or gossips about them, she can easily believe about the gossips if it sounds legit (she gets gossips from Christy)
Overall, she's a wonderful prep and not like her fellow preps who are all classist and snobbish towards non-rich folks. But she can be a bitch sometimes
______________________________
Infos about Barbara:
--- her interest in fashion is a little inspired by Cher Horowitz from Clueless
--- her older sister Marsha is the next heiress of The Hera Hotel since Marsha was born first before Barbara, which she's actually grateful for because she doesn't know how to handle a freaking hotel
--- Marsha is three years older than Barbara
--- Marsha used to be a prep after transferring to Bullworth Academy at the age of 11 but she left the clique 2 weeks later because she can't stand their attitude
--- (not Barbara related) The Hera Hotel is inspired by Hera Palace from The Penthouse: War in Life, a K-drama
--- she doesn't like Barbie dolls :/
--- she LOVEEES light pink. If light pink was a human being, it would be her. Almost all of her clothes are light pink, seriously
--- Christy is Barbara's main source when it comes to rumors and gossip. She literally believes all of them because it sounds 'legit' and 'believable' to her ears
--- her father is of English descent while her mother is of Scottish descent
--- her role model is Audrey Hepburn
--- her favorite shoes are platform Mary Janes (the only shoes she wears other than converse)
--- her favorite type of cake is strawberry cheesecake
--- probably the only prep that has a family that is against incest
--- Barbara and Bryce are childhood friends. Their fathers have known each other since Bullworth Academy. Edmund helps Bryce and his family with their financial problems
--- she's kind of over-protective of Bryce and she's afraid that the preps would make fun of Bryce if they found out about his and his family's problems. If they actually did find out somehow then Barbara would be on full defending mode immediately
--- she's like a sister to Bryce
--- her parents visit her at the academy during the holidays
--- Barbara is a picky eater. If she sees a dish that looks 'unappetizing' to her eyes, she would not eat it but if she sees a dish that looks appetizing to her eyes, she would eat it
--- Barbara hates Lola more than the greasers. Not because she's a slut, it's because she plays with all the boys' feelings and also a cheater
--- Thad is Barbara's tutor. She failed math for the 3rd time (it's a hard subject, so it's understandable), so the teacher told Barbara that she's going to need a tutor, which she's fine with because she doesn't want to fail while Thad being surprised and a little frightened that he's going to be tutor to a prep. Thad begins to tutor her about math and keeps on going everyday and then the two slowly develop feelings for each other. Three weeks later later, they started to date
--- she's LOUD and PROUD of her dating Thad, she doesn't care about him being a nerd and him being not rich. She doesn't care and she loves his personality, and she thinks his lisps are cute. While her fellow preps are judging her for this (Bryce doesn't judge her that much because she's his childhood bestie), she would ignore them and change the subject every time but if it doesn't work then she would say "Why do you care so much?"
--- her family, especially her parents don't mind her dating the boy as long as he treated her well and good
--- Barbara and the rest of the preps (except for Bryce and Pinky) are not close due to their different views on non-rich people but they still talk to each other, hang out, and allow her to be in the clique
--- she really loves when Thad talks to her non-stop (like he's yapping at her about mostly nerdy things), it's because she loves his voice. She would be smiling at him and sometimes putting her chin on top of her hand while may or may not be listening to him (she doesn't focus on what he says sometimes but rather listens to his voice... if that makes sense đ)

SAM RIVERS, Toronto 1989
That Sam Rivers was born just over a hundred years ago is a reminder that the avant-garde tradition in jazz is an old one. The son of a gospel singer, the Oklahoma-born Rivers moved to Boston where he studied at the Conservatory, which helped build his command of music theory and composition that would make him stand out in his career. Briefly a member of Miles' Davis legendary quintet, he recorded his first album for Blue Note Records in 1964, working as a sideman on albums by Blue Note artists such as Tony Williams, Andrew Hill and Larry Young. His work would often straddle bebop and free jazz, and he would perform and record with influential artists such as Anthony Braxton, Dave Holland and Cecil Taylor. In the '70s he and his wife Beatrice opened their NYC loft to performances, and Studio Rivbea became the most famous of the venues in the city's "loft scene".
I met and photographed saxophonist and flautist Sam Rivers when he came through town with Dizzy Gillespie's Big Band - the trumpeter hadn't been part of the jazz avant-garde for many years, but he frequently hired musicians like Rivers for his band. (Latin jazz trumpet star Arturo Sandoval was also in Gillespie's band when I saw them at Berlin, a club in midtown Toronto.) The perk with playing with Gillespie is that touring conditions were more than decent, and after I talked Rivers into doing a shoot with me, he told me to meet him at the old Sutton Place, a luxury hotel downtown where I did a lot of shooting, as it was the home of the film festival and frequently used to put up big stars by the movie and record companies.
I found a decent spot for my shoot with Sam Rivers in the mezzanine lobby of the Sutton Place, where an antique couch had been placed in front of a big tapestry. (The spot would become a favorite one for shoots.) The light wasn't brilliant but I put high speed Kodak film in my camera and managed to elicit a good range of expressions from Rivers as I coaxed him through our brief but - in hindsight - very productive portrait session. My live photos of Rivers playing in Dizzy Gillespie's band weren't as successful, as the spotlights were mostly on Dizzy and Rivers stuck to his spot downstage from the bebop star. Rivers and his wife moved their Studio Rivbea performing space to Florida in the '90s, where he was able to put together a larger band, and his private recordings have been mined to produce a series of records documenting his work at Studio Rivbea. Sam Rivers died of pneumonia in Florida in December of 2011.

Sweet Like Honey - Caught In The Rain
Warnings: None Word Count: 715 Note: I wrote this at the beginning of the month with the intention of of churning out little fics all month. Evidently that didnât happen. But hereâs a little Sweet Like Honey bonus content for your entertainment. Itâs basically unedited so donât come for me and my bad punctuation. Regular chapters continue this week sheâs been a bit busy <3
-
Under normal circumstances, PDA isnât his style but he also knows that Bee loves a good romcom and if he can give her that cheesy, cliche kiss in the rain moment, heâll do his damndest to make her knees buckle.
Noah has a whole day for them planned. Itâs their one day off for the week and Beeâs time off is nearing its end, meaning that theyâll be separated again way too soon. The first half of the day goes as planned, they look at sights, have a nice little lunch, do some more sightseeing. Itâs surprisingly normal, if someone spots them they donât make contact for which Noah is more than grateful. He luxuriates in her presences, allows himself to just be Noah the boyfriend who gets dragged around Boston so that his lady can look at all the pretty things. Itâs nice enough. He takes her picture whenever she asks and even when she doesnât. He keeps the candids to himself for the most part, pretty little reminders of his girl when she goes back home.Â
Sheâs dragged him into some little shop with little handmade trinkets. He doesnât know how many of these shops theyâve already been to, but it makes her happy so he trudges along no matter how much heâd rather slip beneath the sheets of their bed right now. The twinkling in her eyes when she holds one of the little things sheâs found up to him makes it worth it.Â
By the time they leave the story heâs a good fifty bucks lighter, but Bee has that little spring in her step and so he forgets about it. Fifty dollars doesnât hurt his wallet anymore. He barely notices that the air has a significant chill now and if Bee notices it, it doesnât seem to bother her.Â
When the first drop of rain hits his forehead theyâre still a solid thirty minutes away from their hotel. Within no time one drop turns into a full on downpour that soaks them down to the bone in mere moments. He tries to shield her from the rain as best as he can while they maneouver the packed streets.
Noah pulls them under an awning, hoping that theyâll be able to wait out the worst of it. Theyâre soaked anyway so it doesnât matter too much, but he doesnât need either of them getting sick right now.Â
Beeâs hand is still wrapped firmly around his when they find a free spot between the other soaked bodies trying to escape the rain. Her fringe sticks to her forehead, droplets of rain trailing along the strands of hair and down her face. She looks gorgeous, even wet as a dog.Â
He brushes some of the wetness away from her cheek. Sometimes he still canât quite believe it. Their start had been rough, but now that theyâre through what he hopes to be the worst itâs absolute bliss. His fingers linger against her skin. Itâs awfully cold.Â
âWhatcha thinking about, pretty boy?â
The nickname forces the blood to rush up into his cheeks, it always does.Â
âWhat Iâm gonna do to you once weâre out of the rain and these clothes.â His reply comes low, whispered against her ear.Â
He bites back the rest of what he wants to say.Â
Bee squeezes his hand âFilthy.â
âGotta use what time we have, donât we?â He presses a kiss below her ear âWhat kind of boyfriend would I be if I sent you home without a souvenir of my own.â
He doesnât know if the shiver that runs through her comes from the cold or his words. He likes to imagine that itâs the latter.Â
He shifts his hand behind her neck and pulls her in for a kiss. Under normal circumstances, PDA isnât his style but he also knows that Bee loves a good romcom and if he can give her that cheesy, cliche kiss in the rain moment, heâll do his damndest to make her knees buckle. He brings a hand behind her back so that he can lean into her a little more. She lets out a little gasp when he draws his tongue against her lip. The hand that still holds his squeezes tighter still.Â
Sheâs breathless and flushed bright pink when he pulls away from her. If she wants romcom, sheâll get romcom.Â
He leans back in, once more whispering against her ear so that only she can hear him âSoaked as you are, we might as well brave the rain.â

All in the Past 2/3
This started as a request from @angelasscribbles for ONE scene. Three parts later... I decided to make this a follow-up and alternate ending to one of my favorite short, angsty AUs, Unblemished, because we needed more angst. All three parts will be posted today.
Series Summary: Tobias & Casey were friends turned lovers whose different dreams led them to become friends once again. Two years after their painful breakup, Casey has moved on. Tobias is in town to attend his friend and one-time love's wedding, with his new girlfriend on his arm. It's just the wedding of an old friend, or, is it?
Part 2 Summary: Tobias's girlfriend, Meghan, has some questions for him, and he answers honestly - or so he thinks. Sienna attempts to get displeased Casey to see the truth. Tobias finally runs into Craig, the groom-to-be, and then it all falls apart.

His eyes were wide open. Every microscopic crack and spec of dust on the ceiling above had been committed to memory. Tobias accepted that sleep wasn't going to happen about an hour ago. No, tonight, it was him, the humming sound of the air conditioner and his latest girlfriend blissfully sleeping at his side. Without waking, she snuggled closer to him, and he ran his fingers through her long, auburn hair as guilt consumed him. He genuinely liked Meghan; he cared for her. She was witty and kind. So beautiful that every head turned her way when she entered a room. He enjoyed her company, and she was good to him. Perhaps too good. He knew she deserved better than the half-truths he fed her early tonight. But were they lies if he was struggling to understand the truth himself? Any other fool would recognize what they had in Meghan. Then again, any other fool would never have let Casey go.
~~~~~
(Earlier that day)
Returning to his hotel room usually meant only one thing for him, but that's not where this was headed. Meghan, bless her, didn't seem upset. Still, Tobias couldn't shake the uneasiness that began creeping up on him during yesterday's flight and hadn't seemed to let down since. This wasn't the weekend he planned. A quick getaway to a luxury resort, a little pampering for him and his girl, some laughs with old friends, then wishing them well as they embarked on their new life together. It was supposed to be easy. Simple. But the human heart and mind can act in peculiar ways. Denial isn't always intentional, nor is it meant to be cruel. Sometimes, it's a mechanism designed to protect the individual at all costs. But there is a downside. We never know when the façade will begin to crumble, and even then, the truth isn't easy to accept. Tobias was about to learn a harsh lesson. We lie loudest when we lie to ourselves.
Meghan sat on the edge of the bed with a gentle smile. Removing her new sandals and gently rubbing her sore feet, breaking in new shoes hadn't been on her agenda. Tobias dutifully sat at her side, taking over the task so she could rest. Her head tilted back as her eyes closed, and a soothing sigh escaped her. This was nice. So nice that Meghan considered putting the rest aside. But she wasn't about to let a little comfort win over her practical mind.Â
"Tobias..." she began, gently touching his cheek. "I'm not mad, but I do want some answers."
"Sure. Ask away..."
"Why haven't you been upfront with me about you and Casey?"
"What do you mean? You know she's my ex, and we were friends before that. We decided being friends worked better for us, and that's what we've been for years. Where haven't I been upfront?"Â
"Maybe it wasn't your intention, and maybe I read it wrong, but I was under the impression she was a friend that became a brief romance until you both realized you should have never taken that step. But since we left Boston yesterday, I feel like there's more."
"Meg, Casey wasn't a fling, if that's what you're asking. We cared for each other greatly but wanted different things and decided we'd be better apart. And she's getting married tomorrow... so it's worked out well for her."
"Perhaps. But how it worked out for Casey isnât my concern... but you... I know we're relatively new... so this isn't a life or death issue... but I don't want to invest my heart anymore if you're still in love with someone else."
"In love with!" He blurted. "Meghan, we've been over for two years. Do I love her as a friend? Yeah... but I'm not in love with her anymore."
"But you were..."
"Yes, was... past tense. Are you telling me you don't have anyone you've loved in your past?"
"Of course I do. At our age, most do. But... I feel like she's the one who got away, which is fine. Many of us have that person in our past, but most don't attend their weddings."
"Youâre right. And I wouldnât attend her wedding if thatâs who she was.â
âTell me why you broke up, the real reason.â
Tobias stood and paced the floor. âHer residency ended, and she was deciding what offer to accept. Duke was a great fit, but... that led to the where are we headed discussion. She wanted to get married, have kids, a dog, and a backyard... I wanted Boston or at least another city. I donât like grass. I wasnât too sure about a pet. I didnât mind a partner, for life even... but marriage, kids... that always sounded like a trap to me, one I didnât want to fall into. We talked, and when we couldnât find a compromise, we decided to go our separate ways.â
âWas it hard?â
âThe hardest thing Iâve ever had to do.â
âThen you see my point... it wasnât easy, and sheâs still one of your best friends.â
He returned to Meghanâs side, gently touching her knee. âIâm sorry if I wasnât clear about the extent of our relationship. But itâs irrelevant... because weâre in the present. Casey and Craig are my friends... I havenât been sitting around pining for her.â
âWhat if she wasnât with Craig?â
âMeg, thatâs unfair. We canât sit in a pile of what ifs; we can only go with what is.âÂ
âYouâre right,â she sighed. âI just donât want my heart trampled on. I care about you, Tobias, and I think weâre building something good... I just want to make sure youâre all in, too. Are you?â
âI am,â he swallowed. âI wouldnât have brought you here if I didnât believe that.â
âOK,â she smiled. âThen thereâs nothing more to discuss.â
âLook, Iâve had enough wedding events to last me a lifetime. Why donât we go do some sightseeing, just the two of us? We can go wherever you want. No one will miss us until the ceremony tomorrow.â
âIâd love that,â she smiled. âBut let me change into something that matches the shoes I had on during the flight. I donât want to break anything else in until the wedding.â
âYou do that,â he smiled.Â
He grabbed a beer from the mini-fridge, waiting for the sense of relief that washes over you after a discussion like the one they just had, but it never arrived. He mindlessly pulled the curtains aside to take in the view. The upgraded room was worth every cent; the view was magnificent. Then he shook his head. Of all the things his eyes could have landed on... it had to be her. She sat poolside, eyes glued on the book in her hands, and he chuckled. He never could get her out of a bookstore. He closed his eyes and exhaled deeply. Iâm not in love with Casey anymore. He insisted. Iâm absolutely not. So why did his heart ache as much as it had on that Boston night? After all this time, why did he feel like it had never healed at all?
~~~~~
Sienna was the vision of a Northern tourist, happy to be enjoying a balmier climate as she walked alongside the pool in a bright floral swimsuit with a matching sarong, Jackie O! sunglasses, and a floppy straw hat. The look was completed with the two frosty tropical drinks in her hands. Her smile was as bright as the afternoon sun as she approached Casey.
âI know youâre supposed to be relaxing for the big day,â she grinned. âBut I would be remiss in my maid-of-honor duties if I wasnât checking to ensure youâre not getting sunburned.â
âThatâs what this lovely umbrella is for,â Casey smiled.
âYeah, but it helps if itâs opened,â Sienna chuckled as she twisted the lever.
Casey accepted the strawberry daiquiri, humming with delight as the sweet sensation enveloped her. âThis is so good. Youâre a lifesaver.â
âThatâs what best friends are for! Now, relaxation is nice, but is there anything I can do for tomorrow?â
âNope,â Casey replied confidently. âAll under control.â
âOK, what about for the rehearsal tonight?â
âUnder control, too.â
âCasey, Iâll admit, I donât have much experience with weddings, but Iâve never seen a bride this relaxed the day before her wedding!â
âItâs just a wedding,â Casey shrugged. âOur mothers are happy driving themselves crazy over the details. I just have to show up for hair and makeup, put on my white dress, and smile. Itâll work out.â Â
She turned back to her book, unaware of the concerned look her friend had fixed on her. Finally, Sienna had to speak.
âCasey, can I ask you something?â
âOf course.â
âAre you... happy?â
âHappy? Yeah... Iâm happy.â
âForgive me if I say that response isnât terribly convincing.â
âWell, one doesnât have to be gushing and oozing with delight to be happy, Si.â
âNo, but itâs the day before your wedding, and maybe everyone isnât a gushing, oozy kind of happy person, but... you always were.â
Casey closed her book and leaned back in the lounge chair. âIf you have something to say, say it.â
âYouâre right. I wouldnât be your best friend if I didnât. Do you want to get married?â
âOf course I do. Craig is a wonderful man, and heâs so good to me. Weâre happy!â
âHappy... but not gushy and oozy happy.â
Casey removed her sunglasses and sat up to face her friend. âWhoâs to say thatâs for the best? I had gushing and over-the-top happiness. I know what itâs like. But what did it get me? It got me a broken heart. That amazing high dropped me into the lowest lows of my life. Days, months when I didnât want to get out of bed...When I didnât leave my house if not for work. And who got me out of that? Craig. He helped put me back together. And we are happy. No, itâs not all fireworks and rainbows, but those things arenât real life. Iâd rather live with reality.â
âForgive me for saying this, Casey. But... I hope youâre not selling yourself short. I like Craig, I like him a lot, and I know heâs good to you, but you deserve the fireworks kind of love. And so does he. Settling isnât going to do anyone....â
âIâm not settling! I love Craig; he loves me, and Iâm not settling!â
âBut are you in love with him?â
Casey looked directly at the pool without saying a word. She knew Sienna could see right through her when she lied, so she felt it wiser to say nothing. But Sienna wasnât letting her off the hook.
âMore importantly... are you in love with someone else?â
Caseyâs neck flipped in Siennaâs direction with fire in her eyes.
âWhat are you insinuating?â
âIâm not insinuating. Iâm asking. Iâm not letting you say I do if your real answer is Iâm not sure!â
âBut I am sure!â Casey looked around to ensure no one could hear, then leaned closer to Sienna. âFine! Iâll address the 800-pound gorilla in the room! Is my relationship the stuff of fairytales? Do I have moments when my heart practically stops beating because I love him so much? No. But real life isnât a fairy tale. I had that kind of love, and I know how it feels. I was naĂŻve enough to believe that if you find that, you would both do everything you can to never let it go. But you know what? I was wrong. Because I had it in my power to save it, and Tobias had it in his power, too. And guess what? Neither of us did. So what does that tell you?â
âIt tells me you admitted you still love Tobias... but youâre not marrying him tomorrow.â
âYouâre right. Iâm not marrying him tomorrow, and I never would be.â
âSo youâre settling.â
âNO! Iâm not settling; Iâm marrying someone I love and who loves me in return. Someone who wants the same things in life. Someone that I can build with and grow with, and thatâs not a bad thing!â
âItâs not, but I feel like youâre selling me an insurance policy, not a reason to get married.â
Casey began to gather her belongings with a huff.
âYou know what, if you disapprove of me marrying Craig and donât want to stand up for me tomorrow, then donât. But Iâm marrying Craig tomorrow, and I wish it would be with my best friend by my side.â
âHey, hey, hey...â Sienna grabbed Casey by the shoulders. âIâm not backing out. Iâll always stand beside you, no matter what. I just... I want to make sure youâre following your heart.â
âIâm following my head, Si. Itâs always served me much better. Iâm following my head, and my heart will follow. Now, please, can you try to be happy for me.â
âSure,â Sienna said, pulling her into a hug. âIâll try.â
~~~~~
Sightseeing on a scorching hot day was slightly more strenuous than Tobias & Meghan bargained for, and she had the splitting headache to prove it. As she lay in the room with a cool facecloth on her forehead, Â Tobias headed to the hotelâs gift shop to pick up some more ibuprofen. He had just taken his wallet out to pay when he felt a clap on his back.
âI was wondering when Iâd finally run into you.â
âCraig,â Tobias blurted as he greeted the groom-to-be. âI was wondering where youâve been. Is the hospital going to let you attend your own wedding?â
âThey are now,â the handsome, dirty blonde man smiled. âAs of this afternoon, I told them to pretend I was already on my honeymoon in Bali because Iâm not answering my phone.â
âYeah, I know that feeling.â
Tobias liked Craig. At least he liked him as much as he could like the next man in Caseyâs life. He didnât want to. In fact, at first, he decided he wouldnât. The first time he met him, he spent his entire drive to Raleigh listing all the reasons he wouldnât like him. But Craig was so polite, friendly, welcoming... and he was good to Casey. What choice did he have?
Heâd never forget the day he learned of existence. Casey called with the words he wasnât prepared to hear. â...I didnât want you to find out from someone else.â Tobias was sure his heart had stopped. He knew the day would come... someone like Casey wouldnât remain single forever, but... this soon? Barely six months had passed... and he wasnât prepared for how profound the pain would be. He tried convincing himself it was for the best, even when his visceral reaction was to book a flight to North Carolina and beg her for a second chance, to tell her he had made a horrible mistake.
He made a horrible mistake.
For the first time since they broke up, Tobias had been honest with himself. Now, he had to let her know. As Casey kept talking, he was thinking of the best way to tell her, but then, he heard the smile in her voice. It had been gone for so long. The end of their relationship had been punctuated with painful, tear-filled conversations; then abject heartbreak followed their choice. He almost forgot what it was like to hear her... happy. It killed him that another man was the cause, but who was he to take that from her? He hurt her enough already.
He tried to console himself. Itâs just a boyfriend, a transitional one, at that. When they inevitably break up, Iâll be on the first flight to Raleigh to set this right. But a year later, Craig was on one knee, Casey was saying yes, and Tobias decided heâd have to learn to live with his heart cracked in two. He knew it would never heal, but he had to find a way to let go.Â
âCasey mentioned you wanted to shoot some hoops,â Craig's voice pulled Tobias from his thoughts. âThe only time Iâd have is tomorrow after breakfast...and it would be cutting it close.â
âYou know what. Letâs do it next time we get together. My luck, youâd end up breaking something, and Casey would never forgive me.â
âWhat a notion!â Craig laughed.
âWhat?â Tobias laughed with a raised brow. âYou breaking something?â
âNo. Casey not forgiving you. In what world? You have to know my fiance would forgive you anything. But, I appreciate sparing me the broken bones.â
âYeah, uh..â Tobias sputtered. âItâs your wedding day... hoops with me shouldnât be on the schedule.â
âNope, far more important things to tend.â
âYouâre so right,â Tobias smiled wistfully. âIâm happy for you guys.â
âThank you,â Craig said, extending his hand. âThat means a lot.â
âCasey is a wonderful woman. Be good to her.â
âYou can count on it,â Craig smiled.
To Tobiasâs relief, a gaggle of groomsmen appeared out of nowhere and pulled Craig away. Tobias slipped into a waiting elevator, never so grateful to be alone, because one by one, the boulders in his wall of self-denial began to fall. He loved her, he loved her with all his heart... and he lost her... at this time tomorrow... sheâd be another manâs wife. Life is full of mistakes; everyone makes them, but the most painful mistakes of all require us to live with a lifetime of regret. He felt the elevator walls closing in on him as his life sentence became clear; panic filled his chest, and he couldnât breathe. His legs unable to sustain him, he fell to his knees, and for the first time in a long while, he couldnât stop the tears from flowing.
And thatâs how he ended up here. Lying in bed with the ceiling, his only friend. He couldnât take anymore. He had to get out of the room, or he was sure heâd lose his mind. So he slipped out of bed and left a note for Meghan so she wouldnât worry if she woke. The hotelâs bar closed hours ago, but the 24-hour liquor store was delivering a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue. That and a lounge chair in the gardens would need to get him through the night.
He was a quarter bottle in with no idea how much time had passed. He had already bargained with God three times. Couldnât He just turn time back a couple years? Was that asking too much? Apparently, it was, and he was still sober enough to know asking a fourth time wouldnât change the outcome. Downing the rest of the bottle and sleeping for a week sounded ideal. Still, sanity won, reminding him alcohol poisoning wouldnât help. His best bet was to return to his hotel room and try to get some sleep. He stood up with a curse on his lips; he turned around and gasped when he found her standing there. He rubbed his eyes to make sure this wasnât a dream.
âHello, Tobias...â Casey whispered. âIâm glad I found you here.â
XV Beacon Hotel - Boston, MA
15 Beacon Street | Boston, MA 02108 | 617-670-1500 The very first time I had the pleasure of staying at XV Beacon was back in 2015. Moments Masterlist
2014: Sudbury
1 day after Minka-gate broke, Y/N and Chris flew home from their vacation early, feeling very tense and exhausted. Theyâd returned to the hotel immediately and Y/N was back in sweatpants within 5 minutes of crossing the threshold. Chris sat on the edge of the bed in his suit, his tie undone and his top button loosened, holding Y/N on his lap while she cried; his tears leaked into her hair. This was not how tonight shouldâve been. Sheâd stayed tucked on his lap and theyâd fallen into an uncomfortable sleep for several hours before Chris gently moved her to change for bed and returned to bed to find her awake and ready to crawl back into his arms.
3 days after Minka-gate broke, Chris begrudgingly went back to Atlanta to finish his last 5 weeks of filming. Y/N had driven him to the airport and theyâd kissed goodbye in the drop-off lane, but with nowhere near the passion they normally parted. The three days between the phone call on the rooftop and this moment were filled with tears and stressed phone calls to all the members of Chrisâs team. They all assured him with full certainty that this would not be interesting for long, to lay low, and not engage.
8 days after Minka-gate broke, Chris and Y/N got into a huge fight during one of their nightly phone calls. All their calls had been tense of late but theyâd both continued to try. The anxiety and frustration hung in the background of all their interactions came to a head after Chris continued to repeat, âI never meant for this to happen,â to which Y/N snapped and said, âI know you didnât, but what are you going to fucking do about it!â before Chris returned with his own ire.
10 days after Minka-gate broke, Y/N took a day off of work to lean into her feelings, stay home and sob watching Titanic and take a long, luxurious, wine-soaked bath in the middle of the day on a Tuesday. Now it wasnât just the tabloids but all the online gossip blogs and even a few credible media outlets had picked up the story, claiming to talk to âsources close to the coupleâ who knew that Minka and Chris had rekindled their romance months ago and were finally ready to settle down. Instead of passing, it was picking up intensity.
14 days after Minka-gate broke, Chrisâs team was still advising him that the best course of action was to ignore the press until it goes away. Minkaâs team was, according to Chrisâs team, not responding. Sheâd even been seen leaving a grocery store with a ring on her finger. Chris had thrown and shattered his coffee mug when his assistant had to tell him and then immediately called Y/N to be sure he heard it from her. Around the same time, the media outlets had started to drag out old pictures of Y/N and Chris: grocery stores, sporting events, the dog park, fan sightings⊠anything for another chance to manipulate the story with new headlines: What about Chris Evansâs mystery Boston girlfriend? Does she know about his engagement to Minka? Is he planning to keep his side piece? Will he have an LA wife and a Boston piece of ass?
17 days after Minka-gate broke, Chris called his mother, who told him she didnât understand the Hollywood ways, but she thought this was taking an awfully long time to die down. She gently, quietly wonderedâ in a way only a mother couldâ why he didnât just make a statement to protect his real relationship. In another fit of frustration, Chris snipped at his mother, âI pay these people to take care of it, so theyâre taking care of it.â Lisa sighed and responded, âbut are they?â
19 days after Minka-gate broke, Y/N was sitting in her office, updating client charts, when her office phone rang.
âHello, this is Y/N.â
âHi, Y/N, weâve never spoken, but Iâm calling about your situation with Chris.â The voice on the other end was a clipped female and there was a long pause during which Y/N expected her to continue and perhaps introduce herself. When she didnât, Y/N rolled her already tense shoulders and sighed.
âWhoâs calling?â
âOh right, this is Megan.â Y/N obviously knew who she was but as she was mostly connected to Chris via phone, email, or when he was in LA life; theyâd never met or truly spoken other than a quick wave on a FaceTime call. Obviously in the last weeks since the photo dropped, Y/N had been in the background of calls or seen emails that Chris forwarded her about the latest updates and plans, but theyâd never had a one-on-one conversation.
Her phone buzzed on her desk with Chrisâs caller ID, which was odd as he was supposed to be on a super secret closed set all day- no phones allowed. She ignored the call.
âHi Megan,â she said tentatively, âyou said you were calling about our⊠situation?â
âCorrect. Iâm reaching out on Chrisâs behalf to move forward on our next phase of sidestepping this issue.â
Y/Nâs whole body stilled at these words and her phone started to ring again. She ignored it again and a text immediately came through.
Chris: Do not answer a call from Megan. Call me, please.
Megan continued, âI know I called your work phone so I wonât keep you long, Iâll get right to it. Iâve been talking with Chris and the next best course of action is to announce your engagement. I think an exclusive with People with a shot of the ring and perhaps a few candids of you should do it. So weâd like to do that within the next week; can you get down to Atlanta by Thursday?â
Her phone was ringing again. She hit ignore again. And yet, she didnât know why she stayed on with Megan; she had a sick feeling in her stomach from the second Megan had announced herself, but she couldnât get herself to hang up.
She finally spoke to stall for time to process, âhelp me understand, why is this the best plan?â
âIf we can put your real engagement out there with a wedding date attached, we can pull focus and put this mess to bed. I already have Chris booked for several appearances and interviews after where heâll be askedâŠâ Y/N stopped listening and switched the call to speakerphone. She set the headset back in the cradle and put her head down on her desk, her mind immediately wandering to that snowy rooftopâŠ
Y/Nâs whole body was shaking with rage when she handed the phone to Chris. She couldnât believe this was happening. She didnât know what, exactly, was happening, but how sheâd ended up here on this rooftop while a picture of her boyfriend on one knee in front of another woman was circling the internet. How had she gone from an independent, strong, capable woman living on her own in DC to being entangled in a relationship with one of Hollywoodâs up-and-coming heartthrobs who everyone wanted a piece of? She knew this wasnât real but she just couldnât understand how the stars had possibly aligned to set up such a suspicious picture.
She looked up to watch him look at the picture and, in slow motion, she watched his face drained of color entirely, his head dropped into his hands and she saw his shoulders immediately start to shake.
He was crying. He was squeezing her phone in his hand so hard that his knuckles were white and his body was trembling with sobs.
After watching him for a moment, unsure what to do, she reached out tentatively and took the phone from him, setting the table in front of her, and then moved closer to him. She put her hand on his leg and used her index finger and thumb to tip his chin up to look at him.
All of the initial anger sheâd felt when seeing the photo melted away immediately. Y/N had seen Chrisâs actor cryâ this wasnât it. This was pure devastation. He was already snotty and his eyes were swollen. His lip trembled as he looked at her, trying to keep it together. He fought against the hand that held his chin, trying to dip back down to avoid her eyes.
Without a shadow of a doubt, Y/N knew that sheâd jumped to conclusions. Heâd been as blindsided as she was. She knew nothing was going on with Minka; she knew what they had and heâd been upfront from the second he knew Minka was in Atlanta. This was the press going rogue and trying to get some money however they could. Sheâd process her emotions laterâ she had a lot to think aboutâ but right now, she could see in his face how terrified he was that Y/N might be doubting him⊠them.
âI love you,â she told him quietly, still holding his chin. âI love you, and I know this wasnât your fault.â
He lunged at her, wrapping her in his arms and pulling her tightly against him. She felt his tears on her cheek as they were pressed so tightly together. âIâm so sorry, baby, Iâm so sorry. Iâll make this go away, you donât deserve this. I love you so much.â
They stayed tangled up on the patio for another 15 minutes before they both calmed down enough and realized theyâd lost their appetites. Back at the lodge, Y/N tried to keep herself together. She knew from the few whispered words between tears that Chris was distraught. Their relationship had already had so many bumps, he was so worried that they couldnât survive another one⊠that sheâd go for good.
And he hadnât acknowledged it, but heâd been planning to propose tonight. She saw the hints now that she looked back- the surprise trip, his jumpy nature, his extra focus on using the word âforeverâ in all of their conversations, the beautiful restaurant, the sexy suit, and the insistence she be equally done up.
Instead, this night had been ruined by a misunderstanding with a bunch of money-hungry strangers looking to stir the pot. They didnât care about the real people involved or what hurt they inflicted.
So, once sheâd donned sweats and washed her face, she took a deep, shaky breath to calm her nerves and walked back out towards the bed.
He sat on the edge, staring at his hands. No, not his hands, but something in his handsâŠ
She unwillingly gasped when she realized he held the open ring box with tears running down his face. Her gasp alerted him to her presence and he snapped it shut, swiping at his eyes and spinning to look at her.
Y/Nâs resolve crumbled and she let out the sob sheâd been holding. He held his arms out and she crawled across the bed and into his waiting embrace.
Quietly he asked, âdid you know?â
She shook her head and leaned back in his grasp to look at him, âI had no idea.â
He laughed bitterly, âanother part of this ruined: the element of surprise.â
âItâll be a surprise whenever you do it,â Y/N smiled softly and Chrisâs lips crashed into her, swallowing her startled noise.
When he pulled back, he said, âyou still want to marry me?â
Y/N nodded, âI wonât accept a proposal until this whole mess is settled, but of course I do. I love you.â He kissed her fiercely with both of their tears mixing, muttering âI love yousâ against her lips every time they came up for air.
A soft knock on the door and then Stacey stuck her head in. Before she could speak she saw Y/N slumped on her desk and caught Megan saying â⊠and Iâm also hoping you and I might be able to talk Chris into giving wedding photo rights to People MagazineâŠâ
Stacey physically pulled Y/N to stand, caught a glimpse of her tear-stained face, and whispered, âChris is on the phone in my office. Go. Iâll get rid of this,â she gestured to the phone where Megan was still rattling off her long-winded 18-month plan. Y/N nodded and accepted Staceyâs quick but tight hug before leaving the room.
She kept her head down as she moved through the hall and past the open lounge and slipped into Staceyâs office. Y/N saw the hold light flashing on the desk phone and took a steadying breath before rounding the desk and taking the call.
âChris?â
âOh Bunny, thank god,â she could hear his relief.
âWhat is happening Chris, why does Megan have the rest of our lives planned out?â
âItâs her job to manage my image,â she heard his sarcasm on the word image, âbut this is not how I wanted any of this to go down. We need to be on the same page first. I tried to stop it but itâs just beenââ he cut himself off and she knew that he was running his fingers through his hair. âShe has been relentless. She pitched this plan to me yesterday, and I told her it was awful and that she needed a new one. Sheâs been pushing this idea for almost 24 hours and I didnât realize sheâd called you until I got a break. I came back to my phone and sheâd blown it up telling me she was calling you to tell you âour planâ. Itâs not my plan, Y/N, I didnât back this idea.â Y/N could hear his frustration, his disappointment, and his confusion, but was feeling all of her own emotions.
âShe wants to announce our engagement and then give our wedding photos to People,â anger was boiling in Y/Nâs stomach even as her tears kept falling. âWe arenât even engaged, Chris! I donât want People magazine at our wedding! Whatâs next? Let People Magazine have the first photos of our baby? Do they get the exclusive rights to be in the delivery room with me? What the fuck, Chris, you said youâd make this go away. And Iâm all alone in our stupid house trying to wait this out by myself. All my close friends are in DC, and I have no one to talk to here, every day it seems to get worse and I wake up with more texts with screenshots from people⊠and I hate every second of this. I canât do this anymore, Chris.â Y/Nâs voice continued to rise with every sentence.
Chris was silent and then she heard movement- the rustle of fabric, a door opening, and closing, a zipper being pulled, âIâm coming home.â
âNo, donât do that. You canât just come home from this project, you remind me of that frequently.â
âIâm coming home,â he repeated more sternly.
âDonât bother, Chris. Iâll be fine. I donât want you to come home just so we can discuss our 5-year plan with your team,â she spat the last word.
âIâm not coming home to discuss our plans or anything else with my team. Iâm coming home to be with you.â She heard him pull the phone away to speak with someone. There was a back and forth and she couldn't hear all the words, but she heard Chrisâs forceful tone to whomever he was speaking to. Then after a few more minutes of rustling, there was a car door shut and the dinging of a seatbelt reminder. âIâm headed to the airfield; should I schedule a car or can you pick me up around 6?â
Before Y/N could answer, there was more muffled conversation and then she heard Chris mutter, âfuck,â before coming back on the line, âcan you pick me up?â
âWhatâs wrong now?â
âIâm still in costume. I have to change and then Iâm going to the airfield⊠as much as I know you like me as Cap.â
Y/N couldnât help herself when she snorted a quick laugh; that was her Chris, dropping a suggestive line amid a heated conversation. Heâd be smirking if she could see him, trying to gauge if it broke some of the tension. âAre you sure you can come home?â
âThere is nothing more important than getting this figured out. Theyâll manage without me.â
âChris,â guilt started to course through Y/Nâs body as her frustration level lowered, knowing that once heâd decided to come home, he would be back with her soon, âthis doesn't seem like a good idea.â
âIâve been thinking about it for a few days anyway, and have an email already drafted to suggest how we can adjust my filming to not mess everyone else up. I wonât be able to stay longer, but Iâm not coming back until this is behind us. But stop worrying about this, Y/N. Youâre right, youâve been dealing with this alone and that isnât fair to you. Iâm coming home and weâll manage it together.â
âDonât you dare propose to me. Donât use this opportunity to try to re-do, it is not the right moment.â
He laughed lightly, âwouldnât dream of it.â
âSix?â
âSix.â
âDodge and I will be there.â
âI love you, weâll get through this.â
âHey Chris,â Y/Nâs lower lip was wobbling; relief was already flooding her body knowing that Chris would be here soon to weather this storm with her.
âYes, Bunny?â
âThank you,â she twisted a piece of hair around her finger and bit her lip, waiting for him to respond.
He heaved a heavy sigh, âalways, sweethâart,â he croaked before a quick goodbye.
Stacey was waiting in Y/Nâs office when she returned and looked up, âthat woman has a lot of nerve.â
âTell me about it,â Y/N started to gather her belongings, ready to leave for the day with no more patients and too many emotions.
âShe would not shut up. She just kept running her mouth like I was your publicist or something, all the ways I could try to convince you that her idiotic plan was in Chrisâs best interest and therefore in your best interest. When you two do get married, do not invite her. I will punch her in the face for all of this.â
Y/N laughed for the first time in what felt like ages, âyouâll have to get in line, Stac. Thanks for getting rid of her; Iâve never had to deal with her and this has all just beenâŠâ she trailed off while she reached for her phone and smiled to see a picture Chris had sent in costume with a message:
Chris:
Chris: Had to leave the Farmer Cap costume, but see you soon, beautiful
Her bag packed and jacket on, she realized Stacey was still watching her and then tentatively began to speak, âIâve been afraid to pry, but are youâ how are you doing?â
Y/N shrugged while she pulled on her jacket, âIâve been better.â
âDid he reallyâŠâ Stacey trailed off, biting her lip and staring at Y/N.
âGod, no. I mean, he dated Minka years ago, but no. Heâs not cheating, heâs not living a double life. The photographers will go to major lengths to get some clicks on an article.â
Stacey nodded but continued, âand youâre positive? No doubt heâs just acting?â Y/N stilled in her preparations to leave and turned to look at her colleague⊠her friend⊠more carefully. Stacey continued, âIâm just saying, itâs his profession to fake things, would you even know?â
âI donât want to have this conversation again, Stace, and I love you, so Iâm trying to avoid snapping at you,â she sighed and slung her bag over her shoulder, âbut I know Chris, I trust Chris, and I love Chris. He isnât acting.â
Stacey threw her hands up in front of her, âIâm sorry, I just felt like I had to ask.â
âAnd you did, but please donât ever question him again. Weâve been through so much already, I need my friends to have my back.â
âWonât happen again,â she stepped towards Y/N offering a tentative hug that Y/N quickly accepted.
Y/N sat in her warm car on the tarmac waiting for Chrisâs plane to land. Music played quietly but she wasnât listening. Sheâd left her phone in the back seat so she wouldnât be tempted to scroll while she waited; instead, she was aimlessly petting Dodger with one hand and playing with the edge of her scarf with the other.
She saw the lights of the plane and watched it take its time landing and taxiing towards the hangers on either side of her waiting SUV. Her car was the only one on the tarmac, although there were a few parked in the lot at the entrance, which made sense: Chris was likely the only passenger. For once, sheâd been quite grateful for his privilege and situation to be able to get on a flight and come straight to her.
The door to the plane popped open with the stairs dropping down and displaying Chrisâs silhouette as he reached the top of the stairs. He had a duffle bag in his hand and his backpack slung on one shoulder while he descended; Y/N felt her anxiety melt away seeing him. As he got closer, she pushed the door open and started towards him over the snowy pavement. Chris dropped his bags when they met and lifted her into his arms, his face tucked into the crook of her neck and burrowing through the fluffy scarf to kiss her neck, her jaw, her cheek, and her lips while pulling her legs around his waist. He took three huge strides and she felt her ass meet the hood of her car.
Chris set her on it carefully and continued to kiss her, to rub his hands on her, while she clung to himâ it was freezing in the March air but she didnât care, all she wanted was to be close to him. She didnât realize she was crying until he swiped at her tears. A loud bark forced them apart when they noticed Dodge jumping around beside them and then untangled long enough for him to lean down and properly greet Dodger, then retrieve his bags. The drive home was quick and quiet while they listened to music and held hands on the center console. They ate dinner on the living room sofa with Y/Nâs legs draped over Chrisâs lap and Chris indulging in pizza, mozzarella sticks, and beerâ definitely not part of his Cap dietâ and didnât bother to turn on the tv. Being back in each otherâs company, Chris telling set stories, Y/N telling stories about her adventures with Dodger.
The doorbell rang and surprised both of them while Chris untangled himself and pulled the door open with a surprised, âMa!â
âChris?â Lisa sounded equally surprised as she crossed the threshold. âI thought you couldnât leave set in this super secret last stretch of filming? What are you doing here? Where is Y/N?â
Y/N round the corner and greeted Lisa with a warm hug, accepting the tote bag she offered (full of homemade cookies) before gesturing Lisa into the house and pouring her a glass of wine. âI came home to be with Y/N. Sheâs been here all alone.â
âIâm well aware, Christopher, Iâm glad you came to your senses too.â
Y/N shoved a whole cookie in her mouth instead of laughing loudly at Lisaâs directness with her oldest son. Chris shot Y/N a look and rubbed his hand on the back of his neck, âI know, I know, it took me long enough.â Taking pity on him, Y/N rounded the kitchen island and put an arm around his waist, accepting the kiss he planted in her hair.
âI heard about Meganâs plan,â Lisa took a sip of wine and her eyes bounced between the two of them.
âItâs idiotic, I know, weâre not doing it,â Chris answered immediately, his grip on Y/Nâs waist tightening when she leaned into him.
âThank God. Are you firing her too?â
Chris glanced at Y/N and then shrugged, âWe have to manage this first, then weâll talk,â he looked back at Y/N.
âWe?â
âYouâre my team. Everyone else is just people who work for me.â If she wasnât already in love with him, that line wouldâve brought her to her knees. Y/N was immediately overwhelmed by emotions (again) and tried not to cry. She tucked her head into Chrisâs shoulder and wrapped her other arm around him, âIâm sorry I didnât acknowledge that sooner.â
She nodded against him, not taking a chance to pull away and look at him, and Lisa broke the silence that followed, âso what are you going to do?â
âI have no idea. If I post something on Twitter, especially at this point, itâll seem fake. If we coordinate with a press outlet, itâll be forced and that puts Y/N too far in the spotlight.â
Lisa was quiet for a few minutes and then she looked between the two of them, âI might have an idea. How long are you home?â
â
Two nights later, Chrisâs hand fell to the small of Y/Nâs back as he guided her through the door of the Concord Youth Theater. The House was open and it was mere minutes before curtain: all exactly as planned. They stepped through the nearly empty lobby and were greeted by ushers who started to ask about their seat numbers but quickly panicked when they processed Chrisâs presence.
After a quick autograph on a spare Playbill, Chris and Y/N continued down the aisle towards the front where Lisa was, as planned, craning her neck to spot them. She stood up when she spotted them coming towards her and waved them into her row, offering huge (genuine) hugs as they took their seats. The productionâ Once Upon a Mattress, performed by the Young Adult Companyâ was heartwarming and well done, and when it was over, Chris was swarmed by all the teenage fans and siblings who had come to see people they knew in the show. Chrisâs photo was taken, he signed autographs, and he talked to fans, all while he kept some kind of physical contact with Y/N, introducing her whenever it felt natural. Y/N, with her natural ability to connect with teenagers thanks to years of counseling them, jumped into conversations easily.
They even went backstage with Lisa to greet the cast and take more photosâ many of that were quickly uploaded to various social media accounts. Afterward, Lisa took them to dinner at a local restaurant, which was packed on a Thursday evening, where Chris greeted more people and made sure to have Y/N beside him at all times.
By the time they were back at home, Chris was scrolling Twitter in the backyard while Dodger romped around and a slow smile broke on his face. Heâd done something he didnât normally do: heâd typed his name into the search bar. And there he was tonight: candid with fans in the theater holding Y/Nâs hand, posed with a whole group, including Y/N, at the restaurant, blurry and distorted but definitely identifiable from someoneâs creepy picture across the street as they left the restaurant.
When he came back in with Dodger, Y/N held out her phone for Chris to see a screenshot Lisa had sent: her Facebook page with a photo of them from tonight where Lisa had been tagged that included Lisa, Y/N, and Chris talking candidly behind the scenes. It had been posted by a parent of one of the performers, extolling the surprise visit from the sweet and engaging Chris Evans and his girlfriend, Y/N. Lisa had sent a picture of the comments; six different peopleâ both performers and family members theyâd talked with tonightâ commenting on the couple and how exciting it was to meet them.
He leaned in to kiss her, and when he pulled back he asked, âare you up for a few more outings before I fly back?â
In the final 48 hours of Chrisâs stayâ one that heâd extended from two days to four after talking with the directorsâ they made sure to be seen around town as much as possible. They went to his nieceâs basketball game, they stopped for Dunkinâ and groceries and ice cream, they went to the dog park with Dodger and Y/N went along with Lisa for her afternoon constitutional around her neighborhood. Theyâd been caught and postedâ truly candidly, although by their design and not Meganâsâ at least ten different times before it was time for Chris to head back to Atlanta.
With each post, comments continued to flow in from neighbors, from fans, on their interactions with Chris. And the more things were reposted and dragged into the fan accounts and boards, the more comments shifted to commentary on their relationship. Not all of it was positive and supportive, but much of it was and before his return flight had landed, Chris noted that the buzz about Minka was all but disappeared. The gossip blogs werenât getting much traction on it at this point, but the next thing theyâd expected happened: the media started to reach out to Chris and his people looking for Y/Nâs name and comments from her or Chris.
Megan. Was. Furious.
To her credit, her plan had been one that she would mostly be able to control and Chris and Y/Nâs rogue version was anything but controllable. But Chris didnât care. Heâd found a way to make Y/N more comfortable, to make it clear how he felt (heâd always been comfortable with PDA, and he made sure to lay it on even thicker), and to get traction moving forward from this awful misunderstanding.
In addition to his nightly call with Y/N, he now had a nightly call with someone trying to stay one step ahead. If it was Megan, it usually started with him being scolded for not listening to her⊠often a variation of âthis is why you pay me, Chrisâ and then sheâd try to push a new narrative. Then heâd hang up with her and call Y/N to pass along any valuable information and hear her daily updates. They spent the final few weeks of his Avengers filming this way until it was finally time for him to pack up from Atlanta and return home.
April 1st arrived and with it, Y/Nâs excitement: Chris would be back home tomorrow and it was her birthday. His plane got in around dinner time, so she would pick him up and go to Lisaâs, who had volunteered to host a joint birthday/welcome home dinner before they finally had some time alone. She tucked into bed with Dodger curled next to her and fell asleep quickly, only to be jolted awake hours later by Dodger pawing at the bedroom door.
âDodge,â Y/N whispered in the dark, patting the edge of the bed, âcâmon, bud.â
Instead of a whine, as heâd normally do if he needed to go out, a low growl emitted from the normally friendly dog. It made Y/Nâs hair stand on end. She groped for her phone, realizing sheâd left it charging on the kitchen counter instead of on her bedside like normal. Sheâd left it there while she cleaned up from cooking dinner and chatted with Chris on FaceTime, and by the time sheâd taken Dodger out, locked up, gotten ready for bed, and snuggled down in the covers, she realized where it was and decided she was too tired to go get it.
Dodger growled again and pawed frantically at the door. âWhat is it, dude?â
In response, he barked loudly and increased his scratching. She groped her way in the darkness to the small desk in the corner of the room, stopping to pull a sweatshirt on, and found the cordless phone that she was now so grateful Chris had insisted on keepingâ âyou should always have a landline!â heâd told her a million times when she moved in and laughed at it. Her fingers fumbled on the buttons while she tried to remember Chrisâs cell phone number as Dodger barked again.
She finally dialedâ hopefully correctlyâ and moved across the room to lock the door. âHello? Y/N?â Chrisâs croak came through the line and she looked at the clock on the bedside table: 2:37 am.
âBaby, Dodger is freaking out,â as if on cue, Dodger barked again and continued to scratch the door. She knew that there would be gouges in the wood tomorrow morning. âWhat do I do?â
âIs the security system on?â His voice was more alert and she heard him shuffling on the other end.
âYeah, of course.â
âCan you hear anything? Does it sound like someone got inside?â
Y/Nâs heart was thundering in her chest and Dodger was getting more and more frantic, âI donât think so. Chris, what do I do?â
âIâm going to call the security company and see if the alarm was triggered, Iâll call you back.â
âNO! No, donât hang up!â She yelped, sinking to the floor in the dark corner, trying to urge Dodger to come to her. âMy phone is in the kitchen, and Iâm scared.â
Chris sighed, âI donât have another way to call and check, Bunny. I promise Iâll call you right back.â
âWhat if someone did get inside, Chris? If you call the house phone itâll ring and theyâll know!â
âY/N, I promise you are safe in our house. Let me just call the security company to be sure. Just stay where you are. If you donât want me to call back, give me 5 minutes and then call me.â
âOkay,â she whispered; her whole body was shaking.
âI love you, babe, itâs going to be fine.â
âI love you too,â she muttered as she hung up and held the phone to her chest. âDodger,â she moved towards the dog and grabbed his collar gently, deciding to take him into the bathroom with her while she waited to call Chris back. He threw his head away from her, jerking wildly and barking. Y/N started to cry while she tried to pull Dodger away from the door, begging him to come with her.
The phone in her hand rang loudly, startling her, and she yelped despite herself before scurrying across the room to answer in a whisper, âChris?â
âThe call is coming from inside the house,â came his reply in his creepiest voice.
Y/N froze.
Banging came from the other side of their bedroom door before he yelled his best âhereeeeeeâs Johnny!â impression.
âFUCK. CHRISTOPHER!â She swiped at the tears on her face and moved to unlock the door, letting Dodger tumble out and greet Chris.
Chris collapsed to the ground while Dodger greeted him; he was laughing his boisterous, contagious laugh and Y/N wanted to be mad at him. The adrenaline coursing through him was going to take forever to settle down, âyouâre an asshole.â
Between laughs and kisses from Dodger, he said, âI thought I could get in without you guys noticing. This guy isnât typically so protective.â
âYeah, well, he likes me better than you so he wants to keep me safe.â
âSeems thatâs correct,â Chris gave Dodger one last rub before getting to his feet and reaching for Y/N, âIâm sorry I scared you.â
âWhy didnât you tell me it was you when I called?â
He shrugged, âsometimes I canât resist the urge to be a 12-year-old. But Iâm happy to see you.â
She sighed and uncrossed her arms, deciding not to be mad at him and accepting the hug he wrapped her in. âIâm happy youâre home, you absolute jackass.â
âTake me to your bed, gorgeous girl,â he pressed kisses to her cheeks and neck while he walked her back towards the bed.
âIf you think Iâm even spooning with you after that mean trick, youâve got another thing coming, sir.â Y/N laughed up at him, kissing him once solidly before crawling back into the bed and watching him strip off his clothes. Once heâd dumped his clothes in the hamper and brushed his teeth, he stumbled into the bed beside her and pulled her to his chest.
âPlease spoon me, I missed you too much not to have you touching me tonight.â She started to wiggle away but stilled when his bulging biceps were caging her in and his hard pecs were pressed against the thin fabric of her shirt. She sighed into his grasp, enjoying the smell of him wrapping around her.
âOnly because your Cap muscles are so good I canât resist them,â Y/N turned in his arms and snaked an arm around his waist while she looked up to kiss him.
âHappy birthday, Bun,â he whispered against her lips before he pressed another long kiss onto her lips and pulled his arm away from her, reaching her hand and interlacing their fingers. She leaned into his kiss, luxuriating in each feelingâ each comfort of having him homeâ when she felt him press his palm into hers, and something cut into the palm of her hand.
Y/N pulled back and started to pull her hand away from his, only to have him wrap his huge palm around the item and pull away from the kiss. He pushed himself up onto his elbow and looked down at her carefully, not breaking eye contact.
âI love you, Y/N, and I want to spend my whole life with you. I never want another minute where the world doesnât know weâre together.â He kissed her tenderly, his fingers once again playing with her hand, but this time, rather than their fingers intertwining, he held just her left ring finger and slid a cool metal circle down it until he reached the base. The movement was loving and sensual as he traced his fingers back up her hand, then her forearm, then the back of her arms, and around to cup her neck, deepening the kiss, pushing his tongue into her mouth and swallowing both of their moans. He finally pulled back and looked at Y/N again, âmarry me?â he whispered against her lips, his eyes dancing between hers while he waited for a response.
She nodded frantically, pulling him to her for another long, deep kiss, when they finally pulled apart, her eyes were glazed with tears but she was grinning, âyes.â
Ilya had sent that text to Hollander almost twenty minutes ago. Montreal was in town for the first game against Boston in the new season and he had impulsively booked a room in a swanky hotel only about a seven minute cab drive from where Montreal was staying.Â
It was a nice room. Luxurious. Even if Hollander didnât show up, he wouldnât mind spending the night here⊠even if it was alone.Â
ïŒïŒĄïŒ§ïŒ©ïŒźïŒ„: Breaking the Rules for Tyler Seguin *:ïŸâ§*:ïŸâ§ road wife edition â§ïœ„ïŸ: *â§ïœ„ïŸ:* Cellyâs 300 Follower Appreciation Requested by @starshine-hockey-girl
This blurb features an Original Character, Ella, who was the first Road Wife in the Road Wife Series. If I were to ever write a Road Wife Prequel series, these would be the major events. TW//Mentions of the pandemic as this would have taken place in the bubble.Â
-Ella had been fortunate to be allowed to travel with the team to Toronto, and later Edmonton for the bubbleÂ
-it was the only way for the teams to chase the Stanley Cup
-and Ella was one of the few media personnel to be allowed to come
-but it wasnât without some extra push from the Lightning
-Ella was essential to their regular season success before the pandemic consumed the world
-so they werenât going to leave Tampa without her
-Toronto had been lovely
-spending each night with a different Bolts players as they took on the east for the eastern conference championship titleÂ
-first, they tackled Columbus
-where they were forced to remember the sweep that had taken them out of the playoffs the year before
-they had won the series 4-1
-then they played the Boston Bruins
-making quick work of them as well in a 4-1 series
-it was the Islanders that gave them the most trouble as they forced a game 6
-where the bolts would win the eastern conference title before travelling to Edmonton for the Stanley Cup final
-their competition: the Dallas Stars
-they had been an unexpected competitor as they had to play Colorado and Vegas who were favourites to win the cup
-but there was no ignoring the star power of the team
-especially when Tyler Seguin was so easy on the eyes
-he had caught her attention the moment she arrived at the hotel
-the Stars had the luxury of being in the same hotel for weeks already while the Bolts would settle in
-but he had very much made himself at home
-Ella would catch sight of him when the teams were ushered into their respective halls for their meals
-or on her way to the pool or weight rooms - areas reserved for the teams and their staff during their stay
-and he very much had eyes for her too
-each time heâd see her it left him smiling
-and leaning over to say something to his teammate that she could not see as his lips were concealed by his mask
-he didnât approach her until after game 3 of the series when the bolts were up 2-1
-he had noticed something in her
-it attracted him
-but he also noticed that it attracted the bolts team
-she had a unique dynamic with all of them and it left him curiously
-Ella had been in the gym alone when he had come in shamelessly shirtless to
-and she did her best to ignore him
-but her eyes were drawn to how the sweat travelled down his body
-and she found herself changing her routine just enough to draw his attention to her body
-a seductress, she had a refined talent
-one that she had been working on for months as the road wife for the bolts
-but it always helped when she had already sparked someoneâs attention
-Ella had only meant to tease him
-a subtle and cruel punishment for catching his stareÂ
-but it was difficult for her to ignore him
-he was easily the most attractive man on the Stars, and maybe even the league
-she knew it
-he knew it
-and he flaunted it
-she quickly became the one that was staring
-it was only then she noticed just how relaxed he was in the gym
-and that his choice of exercise was focused mainly on his upper body
-âholy shit, youâre injuredâ she blurted out before she could stop herself
-ânice to meet you too,â he scoffed and she couldnât tell if he was amused or annoyed
-âIâm sorry I-â
-he brushed it off
-and the two of them made the proper introductions
-âyou must be pretty important if they let you travel with the team-â
-âthe most important only after the goaltenderâ
-âoh, youâre a cocky one, I like it. What do you do?â
-âthatâs classifiedâ
-and heâs laughing and thatâs when she realized just how close they had become throughout their conversation
-he had abandoned his equipment and seated himself on the bench across from her
-she could practically feel his knee against her own as he sat leaned in close
-and she could feel her self-control begin to dwindle
-Ella could feel his warmth
-and the scent of him was intoxicating to her senses
-worst of all any fraternization with another teamâs player was forbidden and it made him all the more tempting to her
-âi really should goâ
-Ella quickly excused herself and did her best to push all thoughts of him to the back of her mind
-which was easier said than done when she was restricted to the bubble
-where ever she went he seemed to be there
-and then came game 4Â
-there was no ignoring him there
-every time he was on the ice her eyes were on him
-and when the Stars scored, and he had a hand in it, he was looking to her
-not even Ellaâs camera could hide her from him as she looked through the lens
-he knew exactly where she was
-and when the bolts had one 5-4 in OT, he was quick to find her in the hotel lobby
-âwe almost had your boys there-â
-she met his flirtation with a smile but was quick to wave him off
-âIâm sorry, Iâve got some work to do-â
-he followed her to the elevator, his hand reaching for hers to stop her from taking it up all the while slipping a copy of his room key into her hand
-âcome and find me once all your work is doneâ
-her stomach was up in her throat as she slipped the card away and went off to her appointment with Brayden Point
-Ellaâs mind was lost on Seguin the entire time
-thinking of the key card that was hidden in the pocket of her pantsÂ
-and it wouldnât escape her
-not until she was done with her appointment and had ended up at his door
-when he answered he was wearing nothing but a pair of grey sweatpants low on his hips
-and she was quick to draw back the mask she wore and close the space between them
-initiating a kiss
-his hands were quick to find her body, guiding her back into his room and only lingered away to push the door closed
-Ella stumbled back with him
-her hands stripping off her own clothes
-and she felt the rushed air of his swearing against her lips as he left the lingerie she still had on from the appointment with Point
-and she smiled because she know heâd think he put it just for him
-but it left her wishing she had
-Ella had been the road wife since the games in Sweden
-and she had lost a lot of herself since then
-she didnât get to indulge herself in many things, having to abide by so many rules
-aside from the ones she selectively broke
-she served the men who played for the team
-but in the moment with Tylerâs hands on her body
-and his mouth on hers
-Ella felt like she had control of something for the first time in a long time
-and she wasnât going to let that moment pass without taking full advantage of it
-she let him guide her back toward the bed
-falling back on it and looking up at him breathlessly
-he was hard for her
-desperate to be fucked after spending weeks abstaining from anything but the occasional handjob
-and yet he hesitated
-his injury
-âhow bad is it?â she asked him slowly
-âthis could be my last shot at the cupâ
-his voice was broken as he spoke
-the injury could be career-ending
-and yet he fought through every gameÂ
-because thatâs what you did for the stanley cup
-âwhere?â
-âmy hipâ
-she crawled up the length of the bed and took the waist of his pants in her hands carefully
-Ella guided them down so that they pooled around his ankles
-and it didnât surprise her when she found that he was not wearing underwear beneath
-he stepped out of them carefully as her hands took hold of his hips
-she kissed along his hipbone slowly, dragging her lips along the angles before moving over to the other
-then she guided him back down onto the bed so that he was comfortable among the pillows
-silently she over to straddle him
-she was going to be as quiet as possible to assure they werenât caught
-Ella began to roll her hips slowly, careful as not to hurt him and coaxing Tyler into a further state of arousal
-arching forward she whispered in his ear, âjust relax, let me-â
-the friction was enough to soak her panties with her own arousal-
-the wetness seeping down over his stiff cock
-Tyler grit his teeth as he lay back on the mattress,
-his hands coming up to grip the swells of her hips
-she pressed up onto her knees just long enough to push her panties to the side
-then Ella teased him with her wet entrance
-gliding it from balls to tip and leaving him glimmering with her arousal
-his fingers gripped her hips tighter, trying to guide her down into his cock
-but Ella made him wait
-she kissed his neck and chest slowlyÂ
-her hand reaching down between the both of them to grasp at his cock
-she stroked it slowly, her wetness the perfect lubricant for each stroke
-Tyler cussed out under his breath as she pressed the tip of his cock to her entranceÂ
-his hips jutted up, silently begging her to take him into her core
-smirking, she obliged oh so slowly
-with her hands braced against his chest she rode him
-and kept him pinned to prevent him from exerting himself
-the last thing she needed was for him to injure himself further
-one of her hands left his shoulder to rub at her clit as she took him in as deep as she could muster
-but that wasnât enough for TylerÂ
-while he was getting closer with each rise and fall of her core around his cock he wanted her to writhe in pleasure
-strong hands lifted Ella from him before guiding her over into her hands and knees
-she opened her mouth to protest but he hushed her quicklyÂ
-then as she were on all fours in front of him he slipped his cock deep inside her
-he fucked Ella hard, his hands gripping her hips and ass tight
-the side of her face was pressed firmly into the bed and she bit her lip to fight back moans
-Tyler was hitting even deeper now, reaching her bodyâs limit as the tip of his cock kissed her limits with each thrust
-Ella wanted to cry out in pleasure but she was forced to draw in a pillow and bite down on it hard
-only did he seize his movements when he felt her walls flex around him and he came deep inside her
-Ella and Tyler were both left panting
-and as he pulled out of her, he cussed at the sight of his seed
-she had broken so many rules by going to his room
-but she didnât stop there as he lay out beside her
-and sleep took them both
-come morning Tyler awoke to the sound of her phone vibrating
-instead of waking Ella up he reached out to silence what he thought was an alarm
-only to find a series of reminders of our pregame appointments withÂ
-and heâs curious
-Ella must be the team's physiotherapist or masseuseÂ
-which meant she would have a record of their injuries
-and she knew about his so it was only fair
-so he clicked the topmost appointment
-and was shocked to find the terms and conditions of sleeping with one of the players
-âTyler?â
-her voice was dreamy as she sat up
-but it only took seconds to wake up fully when she found him looking through her phone
-âso this, this is what you do?
-Ella found herself stuttering unsure of what to say in fear of his judgment but he was quick to put her at ease
-âthis is fucking brilliant-â
-and then she pleaded with him
-âyou canât tell anyoneâ
-and he didnât
-until game 6 when McDonagh interfered with Seguin on the play
-and his emotions high, came the trash talkÂ
-he looked straight had Ryan and told him âI fucked your wifeâ
-it left Ryan stoic
-he wanted to react
-but he knew he couldnât
-not when there was already so much on the line
-this was the game they could win it all
-and they were not going to let the series become 4-3
-while he told the players on the bench when Tyler had said to him the Bolts locked it down and went on to win the game 2-0
-they would end up winning the series 4-2
-and because of her indiscretions
-Ella didnât get to enjoy a single moment of the Tampa Bay Lightning becoming Stanley Cup Champions
-upon landing in Tampa, Ella was relieved of her wifely dutiesÂ
-and after the acquisition of Carter Verhague by the Florida Panthers Ella became the inaugural road wife for the team in south Florida
Day 33 - Molinaseca to Cacabelos
It was just under 14 miles today and relatively flat, and weâve got less than 200kms to go!
After an easy night I woke to the smell of toast. We had ordered breakfast for 7 and when I checked my phone it was 5 past! I gave Jane a shake and we got downstairs pretty pronto. There was just the two of us for breakfast, it looked like most of the others had already disappeared.
We then got ourselves sorted and left our bags for pickup. We didnât leave until 8 this morning, late for us.
The main part of the day was pavement pounding, into and out of Pontferrada and through villages on the way to where we are now in Cacabelos.
The views to the mountains on the way to Pontferrada were tremendous. We opted for the straightforward route in rather than going the long way through an extra village.
The route takes you past the very early Templar castle in Ponferrada and we stopped for a coffee overlooking the huge walls.
The way out of Ponferrada was quite nice, through a park and past playing fields where kids had their Saturday football matches.
Eventually we got back into a bit of countryside where we were getting small vineyards again and poppies by the side of the path. Yesterday we made friends with Gee Gee and Caroline from Boston and Rhode Island, and we met them again today on the path. Caroline was having trouble with a swollen shin so nurse Jane came to the rescue with freezing gel and a bandage to bind things up.
We passed an old majestic ruined house that Jane reckoned she could do something withâŠ
A couple of villages in and we stopped again. Jane had a coffee and I had a fresh orange juice. The girls in the cafe were really friendly.
Carrying on we veered back to a main road and another more modern scruffy village where we stopped at a chemist for tissues (itâs amazing how many packs we have got through so far). Janeâs been effected by all the pollen too so got some hay fever stuff as well. Anyway, back on the road and this village just seemed to go on and on and on. We were both mightily relieved to get to the end!
We then had another few miles to go and finally ended back in the countryside, and it was lovely countryside with grass fields and more vineyards, before finally arriving in Cacabelos. We were both tired getting here, I think yesterdayâs downhill took a bit out of us.
We found our place ok. Itâs a hotel/hostel/restaurant. They are very friendly but this is the place I called and tried to book using my rudimentary Spanish a couple of weeks ago. Needless to say I canât have done very well as they didnât have our booking! Luckily they did have space, so weâre in a very nice room with two other women in proper beds with sheets and covers, and have towels! Luxury!
They also did a menu del dia so we dumped our stuff and ate. I had been craving a salad as we hadnât eaten any veg for a couple of days so started with an ensalada mixta, then a main dish and finally this really delicious rich chocolate cheesecake, all washed down with wine.
The place is run by a husband and wife combo and they were hilarious. They were incredibly busy but it was fun watching them shout at each other, handle everyone (arrivals, food, drink), and still keep their sense of humour.
We had a couple of hours chilling and showering then went for a wander. We popped into the church and outside the cafe next door was a traditional Spanish band playing and singing. They just looked like they were doing it for fun.
The village has a large river so we took a gander along it for a bit. On the way back there was a chap stripping out of a wetsuit so he must have been for a swim.
Nothing much was open, so weâve come back to put our feet up and chill. Tomorrowâs walk should be a bit shorter and should still be flat.
