June Fic Recs

It's been a while since I put one of these together! Under the cut are a selection of great spirk, mckirk, spones, and mcspirk fics I've read in the past few months with a brief description of what I liked about them. Enjoy!

SPIRK

Tomorrow’s Circus by Borealisblue. TOS. Explicit, 56,084 words (as of 6/20/24). Work in progress. Circus au, 1930s, everyone’s human. The friends-to-lovers and pining in this is SO GOOD and I really think that everyone needs to be reading this fic. I haven’t been this invested in a fic in a long time; getting that subscription email letting me know this fic has updated can literally fix me when I’m having a bad day. Cannot rec this fic enough if you’re in the mood for a slowburn, plus the art in it is phenomenal.

A Perfect Fit by ThereBeWhalesHere. TOS. Teen and Up Audiences, 7,097 words. Role swap: Captain Spock and First Officer Kirk. Spock’s POV, admittance of feelings, first kiss. This fic is so lovely, I love a fic where I get to just watch these two get to know each other and fall in love.

Time After Time by spaceisgay (ChancellorGriffin). SNW and Disco. Explicit, 138,921 words. I loved this fic. The pining and sexual tension is so good, and this fic has a good balance of humorous fluffy scenes and angst and incredibly hot smut. It’s a spirk fic, yes, but it really dives into sibling dynamics as it explores the Kirk brothers’ relationship as Spock continues to process the Michael-shaped hole in his life. I love this take on this era’s Spock, there’s so much he doesn’t know about himself yet. I also really adore how this fic writes all the characters—you really get a sense of everyone’s personalities in this fic, the entire crew feels so ALIVE. Just fantastic characterizations of everyone!

Big Me (But It's You I Fell Into) by waketosleep. AOS. Mature, 38,728 words. This is the fic that got me to care about golf. I wish I was kidding—now I join my in-laws when they’re watching it on the TV. This fic has a scene between McCoy and Kirk during Kirk’s first tournament with him that had me laughing my ass off. Never not thinking about this fic; the dangerous part about reading a sports au is suddenly you care about that sport. Don’t think it can happen to you? Give this fic a try. 

Consume by the_moonmoth. AOS. Explicit, 1,139 words. Must be logged in to read. Very hot smut. Dirty talk, mind melds, Bottom!Kirk and Top!Spock. This fic just hits.

You Could Call It Love by lurikko. TOS. Mature, 45,791 words. Fake marriage, slowburn, getting together. This fic is SO good, just a whole bunch of tropes that I adore.

SPONES

That Which Lingers by stanzas. TOS Movies. Teen and Up Audiences, 1,008 words. Takes place after The Search for Spock. Established relationship with some very sweet moments as they deal with the lingering side effects of the fal-tor-pan. This fic is just everything to me, it absolutely melted my heart.

So Hold Me Close and Say Three Words by Rusoe. TOS. Mature, 1,103 words. Omegaverse. Nesting, Omega!McCoy and Alpha!Spock. I absolutely wasn’t expecting this fic to dive into insecurities about aging when I clicked on it. Loved this!

Stop Making Sense by therev. TOS. General Audiences, 13,775 words. Spock is severely injured as a result of a decision McCoy had to make in order to save the lives of others. McCoy carries a lot of guilt over his actions, even as Spock recovers from his injuries. Very good.

it’s all downhill from here by strangenewwords. AOS. Teen and Up Audiences, 2,082 words. McCoy takes Joanna sledding. Joanna gets overtired, and McCoy gets overwhelmed and panicky. Love this fic’s take on Dad!McCoy, and the spones in this is so damn sweet.

MCKIRK

and i can lend you broken parts that might fit (like this) by jeyhawk. AOS. Explicit, 17,461 words. Academy era, first they hookup, then get to know each other, and then their relationship grows from there. I’m a sucker for fics with this setup. 

Resistless is your charm by fangirlandiknowit. AOS. Explicit, 6,031 words. After hearing about Uhura’s awful first date with Kirk, McCoy decides to text him. Includes some mini-golfing and a very good car hookup scene. Loved this.

MCSPIRK

Tex-Mex Eggrolls and Spinach Dip by Ncc1701ohno. TOS. Explicit, 3,746 words. Smut, light bondage. The setup for this fic is that Spock, McCoy, and Kirk find themselves stuck in the 21st century and work at the Cheesecake Factory in order to make ends meet. I desperately want this fic to become a multi-part series, because the concept is endlessly amusing to me (which is pretty obvious since I partially inspired the idea). A very funny and very hot fic.

Everything That Disappears by sagesiren. AOS. Mature, 19,748 words. Academy era, kid fic, Trans!McCoy, fluff and emotional hurt/comfort. Absolutely loved this, McCoy being a single dad is everything to me. A very entertaining get-together fic for the three of them while exploring parenthood and being trans.

Approximation by liadan14. AOS. Explicit, 15,167 words. Mutual pining, hot smut, and a really interesting plot told non-chronologically. I especially enjoyed Spock’s characterization in this fic, but I love how all three of them are written!

Season 4 Fix-It/Post-Canon Fic Recs!

The thing everyone told me when I first joined this fandom was that I was going to need a lot of fix-it fics to cope with the trauma of Season 4. And it's true. So I compiled a list of some of my favorite fix-its and post-canon fics, basically anything that fixed my mood after Season 4, for any newcomers who might need it. Or anyone really, I love all of these fics and would recommend them to any BBC Sherlock fan.

Anyway, there are some smutty ones and some purely fluffy ones. I am asexual so I either don't read super explicit stuff (it ruins the mood for me tbh) or I just skim those parts lol. There is a lot of parentlock because that's my fav. Anyway, enjoy!

Nocturne - by Atiki may be my favorite Johnlock fic of all time. literally perfect in every way. A series of late-night conversations between John and Sherlock post-season 4. A lot of parentlock fluff and some smut at the end!

WHISPER TO ME - chrysanthemumsies Sherlock learns to play the guitar. lots of fluffy parentlock. lots of pining.

Silhouettes - by allonsys_girl This one really covers all the bases, it's fluffy, it's angsty, and it even gets a little smutty at the end.

For Love - by lurikko Post-Reichenbach but Mary doesn't exist and Seasons 3 & 4 never happened. They get married "for a case", but it obviously doesn't stay that way.

Unglamorous - yaycoffee super cute domestic parentlock fluff. the eye contact and the flirting finally lead them to confessions.

Wednesday (the best day of all) - by UnrelentingHost Rosie starts calling Sherlock 'Daddy,' and he doesn't know how to react or how to tell John. It has to be one of my favorite tropes.

About Sleep and Coffee and the Existence of Fate - by Atiki They want to get married but they're John and Sherlock so it takes them 6 chapters to actually get engaged. Super cute and fluffy and a little smutty.

Im after basically any fic with a vampire Sirius (I actually saw some vampire Sirius and cowboy Remus art so if that exists I’d like to know). I also have a vague memory of a fic with vamp Sirius as Remus’ roommate?

I Don't Bite by @mooncat457writing Halloween was Sirius Black’s favorite holiday. He loved every part, from planning the perfect costume to throwing the kick-ass party that everyone would talk about for weeks to come. Okay, and sure, maybe the irresistible curly-haired, green-eyed cutie dressed as a werewolf that just walked through his front door didn’t hurt either.

A Taste of Your Love by starsnsoul the one where Sirius is a vampire and Remus a cowboy and they fall in love: “It’s dangerous out here at night,” Remus wet his lips, suddenly aware of how dry they were, “and we’re quite far from the nearest town.” The man in front of him continued to gaze up at him, eyes twinkling with a dangerous look, seeming to dare him to ask risky questions, to probe and let curiosity kill the cat. “What’s your name?” he asked, feigning ignorance to Remus’ concern. “Remus.” He answered without a second thought to who he was telling this to, something about the other man made him want to lay himself out bare, secret’s spilling out into the night air, all the good and the ugly. Something about the other man was dangerous but Remus felt the blood in his veins ignite at the thought. “Remus,” the man with eyes like the moon whispered, “I’m Sirius.”

FLATMATES (part 2)

Two years ago today I made my flatmates rec list, which is my favourite list ever. I never get tired of this trope. So, since it is once again my birthday, here are some lovely additions!

losing my mind, thinking about you, by drowsyanddazed (16k)

The black kohl along his water line is smudged, black flecks of it dusting his cheekbone. His hair is still flying everywhere, whipping across his face. He’s a mess. He’s the blurred edges of a photograph. He’s a heartbeat and stinging lungs. He’s the rattling behind Remus’ ribcage. And Sirius grins at him, tongue between teeth —illecebrous and tantalising and all things beautiful and dangerous— and all the air rushes out of Remus’ lungs in one fell swoop. He’s lightheaded and dizzy and burning.

An absolute gem, this one. In which the first wizarding war is on the rise, but the boys are flatmates and they go grocery shopping!! The jealousy and pining is perfect.

Heat the Winter Floods + A Little Sincerity Is a Dangerous Thing, by daphnaea (6k)

(Two parts)

It was funny, Sirius thought, the things you could fail to learn about your best mate despite sharing a dormitory for seven years.

A story of pining for you flatmate, in two parts. Set during the first war, it’s slightly angsty but oh so lovely and well-written.

Seeing Other People, by swings_and_roundabouts (21k)

Where Sirius is hopelessly in love with Remus Lupin who is always just a little out of reach. But their friends with benefits situation isn't sustainable, Remus is so close yet so far away and Sirius doesn't know if he can take it anymore.

Once again, they live together and are friends with benefits. Lots of pining, jealousy and idiocy follows, as well as a sort of “break-up”. This is quite angsty, very much a “requited unrequited love” kind of fic (which I LOVE).

That didn’t stop him from glancing over the top of the paper to where he stood at the edge of the hallway. He was frozen in the way you froze just before you kicked off the ground on your broom. Right before a runner pushed off the block. Right before you dove off a cliff into the sea. Frozen with the promise of movement about to burst forth.

Sirius watched him, holding his breath.

“You’re lying.”

Short and sweet, less angst and more fluff!

Remus is nineteen and tired, now. And he knows that if he and Sirius were ever going to become anything—if Sirius loved Remus the way Remus loves, and will probably always love, him—it already would’ve happened.

Another fic that proves that this trope is the absolute best. In which Remus is a stubborn prick (we love him) who refuses to move in with Sirius — but in the end he has no choice. There’s arguing, hurt feelings, and a stupid amount of pining. And, let’s now forget, the writing is out of this world lovely. Ridi’s characterisation of Remus is to die for. A must read!

Don't Make Me Beg For You (Because I'll Beg For You), by CuriousMay (14k)

This fic was so much fun! In which Remus thinks that everyone, including Sirius, knows that he’s in love with him. Turns out: Sirius didn’t know. Some big realisations, pining and lots of sexual tension ensue.

Regulus needs a place to stay, Remus needs to get over Sirius. It’s August 1979 and things are getting out of hands.

In which Remus lives on Sirius’ sofa. That is, until Regulus shows up. Slow burn and beautiful pining in a First War setting. Lovely!

Weehee this gives me another chance to talk about Merry Men, one of my favourite wolfstar fics! These are not in order tho

(FYI - some of these are WIPs but I am a 100% believer in reading WIPs, yeah sometimes you have to wait for a chapter but that's part of the joy, screaming at the author all your love and encouragement.)

Merry Men - @copper-dust

It's gorgeously written, I mean every second sentence is poetry, and several I've had to put it down just to think about the masterpiece of a paragraph I've just read. Military AU, with a brutally honest view of the Vietnam war - we've got soft wolfstar amidst gunfire and grief, and sweet new cadet James, and all the incredibly 4D minor characters you could ask for. Deserves so so much more kudos and attention, it's currently <50 kudos and it's absolutely criminal.

When A Star Fell To Earth - EmRoseJori

Sci-fi AU. This was an absolute blast beginning to end. This is like watching a thrilling space-fi movie but with Wolfstar. And Remus is Welsh!!! It pretty much all takes place on earth, but in a futuristic post-apocalyptic setting. 430 kudos isn't minor but I think it deserves a hell of a lot more.

Made of Magic - lurikko

Short and sweet. Somehow combines cute and unnerving, menacing haunting vibes. Remus is hired to essentially exorcise Mr Black's house and there's something strange about the magic in the house. It's spooky and charming - recommend with a blanket and a tea on an overcast day.

The Space Between - @emeryhall

This fic made me laugh and cry (I finished a tissue box). It's a get-together fic where Remus follows Sirius through the veil. So so fresh and creative.

We Of Dust & Shadow - @eurhythmix

A stars crossed, soul mate adjacent AU. Difficult to describe without spoiling the fun, but it was thrilling and emotional and beautiful beginning to end. If you liked the themes of The Fall (minus the rom com), I think you'll like this short fic.
