wen kexing/liu qianqiao/luo fumeng U KNOW WHY. also the other day i read two excellent fics (Incentive Program by la_dissonance with zhang chengling/zhou zishu and Into Sudden Bloom by unenuitimaginaire with zhang chengling/zhou zishu/wen kexing) that kneel deep into zhang chengling‘s relationship to his shifu that was really cool to read! and ofc gu xiang/wen kexing/zhou zishu!!!!! @tbgkaru-woh also made a little comic snippet about wen kexing and ye baiyi having post-canon sex to work through their grief over losing their loved ones, in an alternative timeline where zhou zishu dies anyway. aside from the amazing art it has this specific flavour of sex-and-grief im weak to

any variant of han ying joining the wenzhou train* . *though i will likely enjoy reading your other rarepair fic that ive been eyeing where u put hanzhou together with liu qianqiao. but otherside from that ,, its not that i loathe this pairing, it just doesnt really intrigue me. if i see a fic i find interesting ill read it and i enjoy talking about the dynamics etc analytically, but overall it just leaves me lukewarm! im sorry to all the mutuals whose OTP i just insulted TvT

Liu Qianqiao stood by the sea with someone else’s salt tears on her face and her sealskin in her hands. The sun had just set behind her, leaving the sky above the waves the washed out blue-purple of a healing bruise, and the wind that pulled her hair loose seemed to pull her closer.
Welcome home, said the sea in the gentle murmur of the surf.  Welcome home, said the gulls crying overhead.  Welcome home, said her own heartbeat, frantic with excitement, with anticipation of the rest of her life now that she was finally, finally free.

Day 4: Act
Written as part of yexie’s April Writing Prompts. Uni started so unfortunately I’m two days behind, but I’m definitely going to finish this list!
The word act immediately made me think of the scene at the Department of the Unfaithful (which is such a good name, honestly) and I couldn’t help but write about my favorite ghosts, Tragicomic Ghost and Beauty Ghost. Their relationship is so beautiful and I truly wish they weren’t written to be so attached to their respective awful boyfriends/fiancés.
Also, something something performativity. Some day I’ll write an essay about that as it’s portrayed and displayed in Word of Honor, but not today.
No one exuded as much grace and power as Luo Fumeng, the Tragicomic Ghost. Where she went, eyes followed and men trembled. Always a sight with her shock of white hair, her long nails, her gaze that pierced through even the toughest of walls.
Liu Qianqiao loved her. She would follow her anywhere, into death and beyond.
But before she could do that, she had a role to play. The doors opened and a gaggle of scared, confused men were brought into the hall. A smirk tugged at her lips. Fools, all of them. Surprised when the consequences of their own, disgusting actions hit.
Today’s game would be fun. This particular group was defiant, even as she calmly explained the rules, even when one of them was outright killed for speaking out of turn. Even as they were quiet, Liu Qianqiao saw the disdain and anger in their eyes. She let it fuel her smile, turn it into something dangerous and deadly.
The group was brought before Luo Fumeng, who announced the beginning of the first act. It was a little different today — the ghosts were starting to need some variety in their entertainment. To start, the men were split up into teams. Then, told to fight to the death. The winning team would gain a prize.
Liu Qianqiao stood far from her master, her eyes purposefully trained on the men. However, as the first hesitant punches were thrown and the ghosts began to cheer and bet on who would win, she found her self control slipping. Before she knew what had happened, her head was turned and she met the gaze of Luo Fumeng.
The Tragicomic Ghost tilted her head ever-so-slightly, a silent question. It was all Liu Qianqiao could do to keep her expression neutral. Her love for the other woman had grown exponentially, though she knew it was nothing she should act on. The issues that would come with it, the problems it could cause for Luo Fumeng to enter a relationship of any kind with her subordinate, the lowest of the Ten Devils—
Something must have shown in Liu Qianqiao’s face despite her best efforts, because Luo Fumeng’s eyebrow raised and she appeared almost… worried.
Liu Qianqiao looked away.
Eventually, one of the teams of men prevailed, panting, bloodied, looking around at what they had just done. One of them began to cry.
„Our prize,“ another demanded, glaring at Luo Fumeng as if he had the right to do so. „We were promised a prize.“
„Your prize,“ Liu Qianqiao responded, „is a chance at survival.“
The attention of the men now rested on her. „A chance?“ one of them spat.
„The second act is an individual fight. One of you may leave here alive. Who will it be, I wonder?“
The men, once teammates, now stared at each other in disbelief. How could they betray one of their own? After having just killed so many people together, to now have to kill each other…
Liu Qianqiao mentally scoffed at their shock, at their whispers to each other as they tried to somehow find a way out of this. Strangers, people they barely knew, they would not betray? When they had so easily betrayed the women they promised to love forever? Pathetic.
„How dare you!“ a man, the leader of this team of adulterers, shouted. It seemed their discussion was over. „We survived this far together, how dare you pit us against each other!“
„I will not do it!“ another announced.
„Neither will I!“
The rest of the men agreed. The ghosts surrounding the makeshift arena booed and jeered at them.
„Either one of you lives or none of you live.“ Liu Qianqiao’s voice was impactful, though she did not speak loudly. „If you all wish to die, so be it.“
„You— monster!“ The leader let out a battlecry and ran at her, fists outstretched, ready to bash in her skull.
He was barely within reaching distance of her when he stopped short. Gasped. Looked down at where his torso had been punctured, straight through the heart.
As he fell to the ground, dead, the nail that had killed him retracted.
Liu Qianqiao looked up from where she had flinched, one arm raised to protect herself.
Luo Fumeng stood in front of her throne, a glint in her eyes, an ember set ablaze, so dangerous and angry that everyone unwillingly took a step back. For a heartbeat, Liu Qianqiao saw that same worry from earlier now increased as Luo Fumeng took her in, confirmed that she was unhurt. Then, the Tragicomic Ghost turned to address the rest of the room.
„The second act shall now commence. You have until this stick of incense,“ she gestured to it, „runs out. If more than one of you is alive by then, you all will die.“ And she turned, a flurry of sleeves and fabric, to sit down once again.
Later, much later, after the surviving man was set free to carry these mental and physical scars for the rest of his life, Liu Qianqiao served her master tea.
Luo Fumeng relaxed on her seat and watched her, the Beauty Ghost, one of the best Ghost Valley had to offer. Her fingers were delicate, her movements deliberate as she poured the tea and placed the cup in front of Luo Fumeng. There were few things Luo Fumeng could fault Wen Kexing for, truly, but the way he could not see the potential in Liu Qianqiao was one of them. This beautiful creature had so much more to offer than anyone knew, and yet here she sat, eyes downcast, waiting for Luo Fumeng to take the first sip.
She did not.
„Qianqiao,“ she said instead, in a voice soft enough to surprise herself.
Liu Qianqiao looked at her and the atmosphere moved, shifted, turned into something simultaneously gentle and heavy. „Master,“ she whispered.
Luo Fumeng shook her head. „Not now. Not here. Not when it’s just the two of us.“
Of course, Qianqiao was schooled in keeping up an act, but Luo Fumeng was older and wiser and knew what the slight tremble meant, the barely visible parting of lips. Gently, carefully, she reached out to cup Qianqiao’s face, thumb stroking against where she knew the scar was.
„Qianqiao,“ she said again.
The curtains were drawn around them. This was not a performance. This was something far more raw, terrifying, and terrifyingly wonderful, as lips met lips and skin touched skin. Tomorrow would come and bring its worries, but perhaps tonight would last longer than that, perhaps tonight would last forever.

Do you know of any other characters similar to Xi'er and Fyodor Basmanov, the looks-cute-but-is-actually-evil kind (or at least does some pretty bad stuff) ?
Thank you for this ask, Anon! I've been thinking about the similarities between Xie'er and Fyodor recently, and now you gave me the nudge to write about them. x)
If we take only this looks-cute-but-is-actually-evil kind (or at least does some pretty bad stuff) criterion, then there are tons of characters who fit this description: from many anime villains and anti-heroes to, say, Damien from Omen or Tom Ripley from The Talented Mr. Ripley.
Tumblr media
However, Xie’er and Fyodor have much more in common than this, in terms of character dynamics, tropes associated with them, etc:
- Both are young men, who are utterly, fanatically devoted to their mentors - older men in the position of power and authority.
- Their relationship with their mentors has sexual undertones: quite unambiguous in case of Fyodor and Ivan (historically true, and Eisenstein’s movie reflects it as much as it was possible in the 40s in the USSR), and more like a one-sided crush in case of Xie’er. Opinions may differ but personally I believe Wang Ruolin’s words that he didn’t portray Zhao Jing’s feeling for Xie’er as sexual, and that from Zhao Jing’s side it was only parental love (in his interpretation Zhao Jing didn’t intend to kill or harm Xie’er). There are hints that smth sexual does go on between them, but in any case Zhao Jing sees Xie’er and himself as first and foremost “father and son” while Xie’er would definitely prefer “lovers”.
- Both Xie’er and Fyodor are ready to kill and to be killed for the sake of their mentors.
- Both find pleasure in killing - especially killing those who disrespect their crush idol mentor.
- Both are connected to a sinister and murderous organization: Xie’er leads “Venomous Scorpions”, Fyodor is one of the leaders of the tsar’s terror squad, the Oprichniki.
- Their personalities are shaped by their mentors, and not in a good way: pure-hearted Fyodor is corrupted by Ivan’s influence, Xie’er is groomed by Zhao Jing to be his obedient tool, his secret murder weapon.
- Both have feminine features, and both fulfill the roles of wives for their mentors:
Xie’er wears heavy makeup, his hanfu looks similar to a woman’s because of its light fabric and frilly skirt. In daily life he performs the duties of Zhao Jing’s wife: taking care of home, choosing furniture, preparing tea, etc. He also strongly identifies himself with female lovers like Liu Qianqiao and Luo Fumeng.
Fyodor serves as a replacement of Ivan’s dead wife, Anastasia, being directly offered by his father to the tsar as such. During the banquet he dances in female dress, with Anastasia‘s ryasna (a kind of traditional Slavic temporal jewelry, which she wears during the wedding) attached to his mask. (More about Anastasia and Fyodor here: https://siumerghe.tumblr.com/post/161387702250/sergei-eisensteins-ivan-the-terrible-anastasia)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Both are prone to jealousy: Xie’er is jealous to Xie Wuyang, Song Huairen, Wuchang Gui and basically to anyone who steals his yifu’s attention, Fyodor - to Vladimir.
- Their mentors are their one and only passion, the axis of their lives, but in the end this passion becomes their undoing: Xie’er continues to pursue Zhan Jing’s dream and chooses to die together with Zhao Jing, Ivan unintentionally causes Fyodor’s death in the unfinished Part III of Eisenstein’s movie. (Historically, it’s unclear what happened to Fyodor: he isn’t mentioned anywhere after his father’s execution, but his wife and children didn’t suffer exile. Most popular versions are that he was either executed together with his father or became/was forced to become a monk.)
Also I have an impression that some Zhaoxie scenes from Word of Honor are sort of inspired by Eisenstein’s Ivan the Terrible. (Although, in the modern cinematography, what isn’t inspired by Eisenstein?! The man was a genius. Too bad Stalin was an asshole, to put it mildly.)

Now, back to the original question: do I know any similar characters?
Unfortunately, I don’t. Sorry to disappoint, Anon. If anyone can help, please, do!
There is a slightly similar pairing dynamics in the Chinese tv-series Men with Sword: a general utterly devoted to his not quite good-natured king, for whom he is ready both to kill others and to sacrifice his life, but neither of them are evil, and their age difference isn’t big, so it’s a loose similarity at best.
Update: I think Littlefinger and Sansa Stark (from the books! not from the tv series!) are a bit similar. It’s unclear what are they to each other: secret lovers? Father and daughter? Mentor and pupil? Seems like everything at once. He is slowly corrupting her but at the same time she is his princess, his little treasure. And she benefits from his lessons and becomes smarter and more self-confident.
Also, perhaps, this will be of use:
