Luo Binghe is a fun, interesting character who suffers a lot from shallow readings. Which is ironic considering the main source of tension in his relationship with Shen Qingqiu, the MC - who is originally a reader of the novel in which Luo Binghe is the protagonist - is that Shen Qingqiu keeps reading him shallowly / expecting him to act according to some or other character archetype, and thus misses that Binghe is a complex person with his own rich inner world. Basically it's meta-commentary on how readers do a disservice to characters by oversimplifying them to just a few traits and/or their role in the story (SVSSS in general is super meta) but unfortunately not a few ppl read the novel and fell into those same trappings ^^"

It also doesn't help that Shen Qingqiu is an unreliable af narrator, which leads to some people insisting that Luo Binghe forced him into a relationship or is manipulating him or w/e... This is about a guy who waxes poetics about Luo Binghe's unparalleled beauty every time he lays eyes on him. Like cmon, he just has a lot of internalized homophobia and shame to work through, give him a break!! And the so-called 'manipulation' is half the time Luo Binghe looking vaguely disappointed and Shen Qingqiu going "wow! I cannot believe the most beautiful man in the world whom i love so much that i died for him twice and whom im dating is making me have sex with him! Luo Binghe sure is a master of emotional manipulation!" and other half the time Luo Binghe super obviously whining for attention which - canonically, its in the text - makes it easier for Shen Qingqiu to be honest with him.

But enough salt; reasons why Binghe is a top blorbo go:

The narrative (which btw is a real force in this world) is trying to make him into an iron-fist Ruler Of Everything but his greatest aspiration in life is to be a househusband.

Was supposed to be a protagonist of an uber-straight harem novel but threw heterosexuality out the window within 3 interactions with MC. 

His love language is cooking! It's adorable but it'll also hurt u. (Binghe kept making three meals a day for Shen Qingqiu during the five years the latter was dead :) )

A big part of his arc is about learning to be vulnerable and show his sensitive side. (In general, one of the novel's major themes is toxic masculinity and how it harms ppl; I just particularly like how its explored with Binghe.)

A Good Boy (has been going through a corruption arc for 2/3rds of the novel yet it still took a cursed sword controlling his mind for him to start acting like the OG) 

Lotsa delicious fridge horror around him being the narrative's favorite chew toy. Things only ever get worse for him and reality will warp itself to deny him a chance to heal while the story is in progress, because he has a Role and that role is ‘a villainous protagonist’.

But also u get to cry about how he was saved in the end by the power of just one reader loving him and wanting better for him. (SVSSS is also a love letter to fandom/fanworks okay :] ) 

Very powerful but also a nervous wreck. Tripped and fell flat on his face when proposing to his boyfriend.

Just in general him being clingy and whiny and a mess is mega cute (me 🤝 Shen Qingqiu) 

This makes for a great contrast with him being a super OP nigh-unkillable demon lord btw. He could drown the world in blood but he's too busy crying Ghibli tears in his man’s lap. 

Also I need to mention he's extremely funny about being nigh-unkillable too. Like, *gets injured* Shen Qingqiu: "We can have sex once u r better 😔" Luo Binghe: *popping broken limbs back into place*: "I'm better! :D" 

Has a praise kink AND a masochistic streak. Apparently when Shen Qingqiu praises him and pats his head it's exciting, but when Shen Qingqiu scolds him and hits him that's also exciting.

Mobei-Jun stood silently over the body of his lover as coagulated blood stained his boots and the hem of his white cloak. He vaguely hoped that it would permanently seep into his clothes.

"Get someone to clean it," Junshang said dismissively before striding away, his mood sour ever since he returned after days of disappearance.

Mobei-Jun said nothing, eyes still trained on the unmoving chest. Shang Qinghua laid on his side in a foetal position as if in sleep, if not for his extremely pallid features and unnatural stillness. The human was usually a restless person, even in sleep. Seeing him so still unnerved Mobei-Jun.

The ice demon leaned down and slowly, gently, pulled the cool body into his arms. Rigor mortis was already setting in and Shang Qinghua's limbs were already stiffening in death, but Mobei-Jun ignored all of that.

Returning Qinghua's body to the north where the permafrost was the thickest would preserve the body's integrity and reduce the damage done by rot.

It was the least Mobei-Jun could do now.

His uncle was the biggest threat to his position as the King of the North.

With Luo Binghe's support as his Junshang, Mobei-Jun ensured his place upon the death of his father. However, with the support from some of his father's previous vassals, Linguang-Jun continued to pose as a threat to the permanence of his ascension as king. It would only be with either of their deaths that this particular matter would be permanently settled.

Mobei-Jun knew that things would come to a head soon enough, but he had been too foolishly confident in his abilities and his Junshang's support.

When the first assassination attempt happened, Mobei-Jun was fortunately present to stop the hired hitman without cluing Shang Qinghua in. His human had thought that the assassination was aimed at Mobei-Jun, but the ice demon knew better.

His uncle had found out his weakness and was now exploiting it.

He couldn't afford to leave it be anymore.

Unfortunately for him, the rebels were making waves in the South and he couldn't leave without his Junshang's approval, so he resolved to end Linguang-Jun's attempt when he returned.

Junshang had been getting worse lately because of the accursed sword.

Because of that, the Southern Palace was constantly on edge and Qinghua's minor mistake in info gathering had them underestimating the number of the rebels and it lost them an advanced platoon.

Mobei-Jun held himself still as Junshang threatened to end his life, knowing that speaking up would only propel Junshang into a worse temper. Qinghua looked at him pleadingly but Mobei-Jun couldn't afford to be moved by his wordless plea.

There was a hidden spy in their fold and Mobei-Jun didn't know who it was. Until he was sure and could present his finding to Junshang, he couldn't afford to say anything.

He could only have patience.

The question threw him off momentarily but Mobei-Jun allowed no emotion to cross his expression. 

He couldn't tell Qinghua the truth, not when the threat was so close and Mobei-Jun was about to go into battle with Junshang. It would be better to keep a distance until everything had been taken care of. 

Until then, the red robes he had commissioned would remain hidden in the trunk in his study. 

"Why would I?" he returned as coldly as he could, letting whatever spy eavesdropping on them return to his uncle to report his findings.

 

Then, he left with Junshang to remove the rebels, telling himself that once the threat was eliminated, Linguang-Jun would be next. 

He should have looked back. 

 

But he didn't. 

He had never regretted anything more in his life.

Mobei-Jun sat at Shang Qinghua's bed side, watching as frost slowly enveloped every inch of his former lover's skin, tattooing his countenance with frost flower. 

It was pretty, especially on Qinghua. 

Qinghua had always been afraid to stay at the Northern Palace because it was so cold. Too cold for his human constitution. 

But now, it was this coldness that would ensure the integrity of his body. 

Mobei-Jun wasn't in denial. He had seen it. The extent of Qinghua's injury, which he had bled from. it was obviously self inflicted. 

Which meant that Mobei-Jun had failed to protect him in the way that mattered the most. 

 

He continued to sit there for a very long time, ignoring all that was happening in the palace and the coup that took place under his uncle's leadership. Even going so far as ignoring the summons from the Southern Palace which had devolved into complete chaos upon the discovery of the bodies of the Emperor of Three Worlds and several concubines. 

Here, in the permafrost cave of his ancestors, Mobei-Jun sat with the body of the only person who had ever touched his frozen heart with his sincerity and devotion. 

 

The single tear that fell unseen by any other soul hit the ground with a lonely clink.

I was listening to the song while writing part two of Shang Qinghua's redemption chapter and I thought that 诀爱 (Jué ài) was the perfect song for the OG couple. TT___TT so i just had to share the misery.

And A Chinese Odyssey is like my most, most favourite HK movie of all time. So I had to use the quote that struck me the hardest and reminded me so deeply of this tragic couple.

It's so difficult to decide a singular favorite thing about him asfghjkl I just love him so much. :(( There's so many things I appreciate about him. For instance, like you mentioned, his devotion! I am a sucker for devoted, well-written MLs. It's pretty rare that the ML's feel as fleshed out as LBH is. I do love his "cry baby" act and the fact he's a masochist. I also adore that he's always shown his ability to be persuasive (i.e., with Meng Mo in the dreamscape) and hard-working. I love his dynamic with SQQ. I don't care what anyone else says, I love Bingqiu. They are perfect for each other, in my opinion. And I, too, am glad he got his happily ever after. :(

Still reading SVSSS (first time reader, no spoilers please), goddamn Luo Binghe is One Moody Bitch. I’m not even talking about angry, but this boy goes from jealous, to angry, to pouting, to practically wagging his tail for His Shizun.  

But looking back, he really had a fucked up upbringing. I was just thinking about why he’s like this (because I love character analysis), and while his character seems like a mess, his actions usually make sense. MXTX does not veer off course in plot or characterization. Aside from having no acknowledgement from his birth family, the original Shen Quingqui (who was his next guardian) abused him physically and mentally. It’s obvious his relationship (at the point I’m at in the novel) with the new SQQ is not the healthiest. I mean, their entire relationship has been based on lies and misunderstandings from the very start.

When Shen Yuan shows up in SQQ’s body, it’s the first time he receives any sort of kindness or affection, and he’s 14-15 years old, those feelings quickly turn romantic towards his kind and handsome teacher, and I’m sure he’s just confused as hell at the personality change. Then Shen Yuan seemingly rebukes and abandons him and he’s sent to the demon realm. He’s terrified that he’s been abandoned by the only person who cared for him and doesn’t understand why. Then when they reunite and start to make amends, he tells Shen Yuan/SQQ to hit him and abuse him if he’s angry, so long as he doesn’t abandon him, because that’s what the original SQQ did to him, only LBH has no idea that the kind SQQ that he loves is NOT the original SQQ that abused him. He thinks hitting him will please his Shizun. Shen Yuan says he’s a masochist, and LBH basically is saying he doesn’t care if he is abused so long as he still received some kindness and recognition from his Shizun. It’s all he knows anymore, and it’s all sorts of confusing and messed up for him, so it’s not that surprising he turned out this way! The poor guy needs some therapy.

Cold light flashed in his eyes, the ghastly energy exerting immense pressure. The cutting edge of his sword was exposed and his posture was one of preparation for battle.

Luo Binghe’s self-regeneration ability was extremely strong. Even if his limbs were cut off, he could seamlessly re-attach them, and even re-grow them without a problem. Unless he deliberately chose not to heal them, there were no wounds he couldn’t completely recover without even leaving a scar.
