Geishas Are Dear To My Heart

Though I do not have Japanese genes, Geishas bring very happy memories of my early childhood. I was around 4 years old, and at the movies, when I first caught a glimpse of a beautiful Geisha on the large screen. I was too young to understand what country she was from and I had never seen anyone like her before. I was fascinated by her entire appearance and all I knew was that I wanted to be her. 

 I immediately asked for a “dress” just like that... I wanted the hair, the make-up and the shoes too. My parents explained she was wearing a silk kimono and it would be hard to impossible to find a silk kimono in the area. My 4 year old mind didn’t comprehend any explanations. 

A few months later I was pleasantly surprised by my sweet parents with the full attire.  They had a close friend that was traveling to Japan and asked him for the big favor. I don’t have to tell you how happy and excited I was to see such a beautiful ensemble. I wore the attire (with hair and make-up) to my pre-kinder class and the teachers loved it. I participated, dressed as a Geisha, in several Columbus Day Parades for as long as I was able to fit in that Silk Kimono.
