So today on the MSR (Midnight Star Review), we weill talking about the latest Country Music Special to honor the late & great Toby Keith. This tribute show took place on Wednesday August 28th, 2024 on NBC (Where I am at) and at 9pm EST (Eastern Standard Time). Here is how they honored Toby and what they played for him/us. This tribute seemed to be hosted by Jelly Roll & Priscilla Block.

And on the MSR (Midnight Star Review), I will not be giving a tribute show a review. And it was good in my opinion to give it 2 hours. It is fair to say all of those involved gave their own way to pay tribute to Toby, the best way that could think of. Thanks for taking the time to read this review. See ya all next time.

Making the Old Me music video for 5 Seconds Of Summer

'5 Seconds of Summer were really down to earth dudes. It was an absolute pleasure working with them. They made the shoot very pleasant and enjoyable.'

'...In my initial conversations with Lux-Davis, we talked about capturing a sense of nostalgia and journey through time. She showed me a lot of older photographic work from the 1980s and late 1990s. Some of it was pretty funky and looked cross-processed. There were also these iconic images of bands photographed on wide angles with the entire image circle in shot. I loved it, for some reason it reminded me of music videos from when I was growing up.

5 Seconds of Summer were really down to earth dudes. It was an absolute pleasure working with them. They made the shoot very pleasant and enjoyable. At first, I was quite nervous about working with Lux-Davis, with a portfolio like hers. She’s directed iconic videos for some of the biggest names in pop music in America like Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj and Miley Cyrus...

...I first met Lux-Davis on the location scout which was a whirlwind of a day, scouting a heap of different locations. We hit it off well. We didn’t get much pre-production time together, but she had a very clear vision and passion for the project that was infectious. Whilst mainly responding to her photographic references, I did look into Todd Phillips’ The Joker (2019, cinematography by Lawrence Sher ACS), as I loved the film’s treatment of colour. It felt in the palette of classic photographic film emulsion...

...The final shot of the video was a very special moment. It was honestly the closest feeling I’ve had to feeling like a rock star, walking out behind the band into a 70,000 crowd stadium. It was such an adrenaline rush. It was not only the best way to end the music video but also the shoot. It was such a huge buzz.

We only needed to capture one shot, but the label and the director wanted me to try and capture more. I ended up on stage for most of the performance. I was honestly waiting for security to pull me off the stage, as I was right up there with lead singer Luke Hemmings and definitely overstaying my welcome. If you look back at the live broadcast of the concert I’m running around in shot and ruining all of the coverage.

I genuinely don’t think I would change anything with the benefit of hindsight. The clip ended up getting me a nomination for the MTV Video Music Award for Best Cinematography, which is much more than I expected from this opportunity, so I must have done something right.'

After a decade in the entertainment industry, musician Greg Gould had a huge 2024.

In addition to touring, he released his debut album of original tracks, Strings Attached, which debuted at No. 4 on the ARIA Australian Albums Charts.

As well as the powerful track No More with Australian Idol winner and Young Diva Kate DeAraugo, theatre and pop superstar Adam Noviello and drag queer icon Kween Kong.

The tragic murders of Sydney couple Jesse Baird and Luke Davies sparked the song No More which became a powerful rallying cry.

Author Spotlight: Dominique Davis

We're thrilled to bring you a post by Dominique Davis, author of the club read Falling For the Mark, about being gay and doing crime. Read on to hear her thoughts on queer villains and anti-heroes!

Be gay. Do crime. It’s not just a catchphrase. It’s a lifestyle. It’s a religion. And if you understand where that reference is from, we can be friends. Okay, but in all seriousness, there has been a clear increase in queer villains and anti-heroes in pop culture. I’m sure you’re already familiar with some of these characters, like Villanelle from Killing Eve and arguably the G.O.A.T of the genre, Hannibal Lecter. But what you may not know is that these popular queer characters started in between the pages of novels. That’s right. Author Luke Jennings created Villanelle for the 2018 novel Codename Villanelle before it was quickly adapted into a TV series by Phoebe Waller-Bridge called Killing Eve. Similarly, Hannibal Lecter first appeared in the novel Red Dragon by Thomas Harris in 1981 and has since become one of the most iconic villains in pop culture. And while Hannibal’s sexuality is only ever hinted at in the novels, Villanelle’s interest in women is a central part of her character, both in the books and TV series. When it comes to the representation of queer characters, both Villanelle and Hannibal Lecter offer examples worth examining. However, it's important to consider what this all means. Why does it matter that there has been a rise in queer villains and anti-heroes in mainstream media? Well, if we look back on how queer characters were portrayed not that long ago, we’ll find that not much thought was put into them. If you saw them, they were the sidekick tending to the main character, more worried about what was going on in their lives than their own. Or if you were lucky, they were developed beyond being a stereotype only for them to be killed and buried next to the other gravesites of killed before their time queer characters. This is all to say that LGBTQIA+ characters have rarely been given the opportunity to be complex, nuanced characters with their own motivations and desires. The rise of queer villains and anti-heroes in literature, films, and shows signals a change in how queer characters are being represented. No longer are they relegated to the background or used as a prop. Queer characters are front and center in some of the biggest pop culture media out there today. HBO’s Euphoria, Netflix’s Heartstopper, adapted from the graphic novels of the same name by Alice Oseman, and even the MCU who hasn't had the best track record with representation still have characters like Loki, Valkyrie, and Phastos. To see depictions of queer people become more and more varied, where not only do we get to see them be the hero of their own story, but also the villain of someone else’s story is a step towards true representation. LGBTQIA+ members are flawed, imperfect, and nuanced people. We’re multifaceted and deserve characters who reflect that. Of course, not all representation of villainous queer characters is good. Some, in fact, can be harmful.

If handled with a lack of care, creators can fall into the trap of using queer identities as an explanation for why a character is inherently evil or villainous. This perpetuates harmful stereotypes and further marginalizes the entire queer community. There’s a line that has to be towed by writers to allow queer characters to be portrayed as complex and nuanced, all the while avoiding harmful stereotypes and tropes that affect how the wider community is viewed. My hope is that one day we’ll get to a place where we can see a LGBTQIA+ character act as a villain of a story without it having to say anything about real-life queer people. Just as heterosexual people have lived with depictions of characters of the same sexuality as serial killers and thieves without it being seen as a reflection of all heterosexuals. This current rise we’re seeing of more layered representation is thankfully just a start and not an ending. We’re getting some better nuanced representations of queer characters every day. And my novel, Falling For the Mark is no exception. The main character, Maya, is a Black pansexual con woman who falls for the daughter of her mark, Kennedy. For all intents and purposes, Maya is an anti-hero. She steals money from men without guilt and actually takes pride in it. At the same time, she is a fully rounded individual with her own wants and desires. Her sexuality doesn’t define her, nor is it used as the reasoning behind her criminal activities or deviant behavior. Maya's portrayal as a Black queer character is another important step towards better representation. Because while the rise of well-written queer villains and anti-heroes is commendable, more work needs to be done in terms of intersectional representation. Characters like Villanelle and Hannibal Lecter are great additions to the LGBTQIA+ character canon, but they are also white. We need more fully realized characters who not only defy stereotypes surrounding queer people but also challenge preconceived notions about characters of color. Representation of LGBTQIA+ people needs to be diverse and inclusive to represent us all or it only serves to represent a narrow view of our community. I hope that my novel, along with other novels and media featuring queer characters, can contribute to the shift toward true representation of LGBTQIA+ people. Queer characters should be able to be the hero and the villain of stories without falling victim to harmful tropes. We deserve to see ourselves in all kinds of stories, not just as sidekicks or punchlines, but as fully realized characters with our own agency and complexity. So go ahead, be gay, do crime, and read Falling For the Mark to see how it's done. Or don't, that’s cool too. We'll still be friends.

Favorite Literati scene?

I think it's the quasi fucked up context behind that AYITL scene that appeals to me. The lighting is so, so gorgeous and so warm and resplendent. It's such a a homey scene, but you have all these different factors. Rory, excited about her work for the first time in forever: the implication that she and Jess are talking about it offscreen: Jess, beginning to catch sexy stepcousin feels but trying to subdue them, and Luke who has never looked so paternal or so HAWT, who is maybe a little too supportive of his soon to be stepdaughter and his nephew getting it on in the near future. It's that scene that made me feel "yes, I want to see more of this circus and the implied future these two have." Hope springs eternal, I guess. It worked out in my head, at least.

Favorite reference?

I love that both Jess was obsessed with Hemingway and that Logan also regales Rory with Hemingway lore on their early dates. Rory, hon, you're always going to be stuck with that one.

The implication that Jess is a Coldplay Stan is also a nice touch. I think about that. What other cheesy and sentimental pop acts is he into? (Don't say Taylor Swift, y'all).

And of course the cultural reference that drove me crazy because how inane it is: why does Lorelai think Outlander is about teenage moms? Did ASP ever know what any of her cultural references meant?

Favorite crackship?

I am one hundred percent convinced that Jess Mariano was banging a post rescue-Natalie Scattorcio on and off during the time he was back in NYC. You cannot look at this girl and not tell me he wouldn't have been into her.

They would have been terrible for each other, but she's just the kind of girl who would have accepted him for who he was until he decided it was time to change.

Also I'm not sure how it would happen, but I'm fairly certain Slutty Philadelphia Jess and Brooke Davis from One Tree Hill would have had a nice fling. Forget about Alt Tristan for a bit, Brooke.

Other than the iron giant, what is your biggest inspiration for your art and OCs? And if you could take Kent and put him in another story, what would it be?

quite literally what i used to do for fun-- and still do, to an extent --was take kent and put him in situations (this is my obtuse way of saying i used to RP him for a good chunk of a decade). it makes it all the more difficult for me to shave off the filing numbers and make him my own oc officially, not to mention his design being as iconic as it is... my dream would be to be brought on by warner bros and just direct a bunch of shorts where he suffers for fun (like a cryptid or something fucking with him while he's trying and failing to his job) and for character development (i'm firmly of the belief that the man has no real friends).

aside from the iron giant as a massive inspiration though, hm... it can be kind of hard to say sometimes, as specific characters may be heavily influenced by very different forces! some of my characters are like funhouse mirror versions of real life historical figures, for example, whereas others have no relation (or at least currently don't) to their source. for example, my character bunny davis was inspired by the poem "the lady of shalott" by lord alfred tennyson, but as of now the narrative of the poem doesn't have any bearing on her story (though i'm trying to work it back in)! by contrast, my favorite oc rob is HEAVILY inspired by dads of the cartoon variety, most notably dexter's dad from dexter's laboratory.

i've said it before but i really try and pull from all of my influences! the iron giant is such a massive one, but to varying degrees in my life i'd say some of the other big ones would include dragon ball, the DC Animated Universe, pre-renaissance disney films, baroque art, jc leyendecker, lucky luke, lupin the third-- i could go on and on. i made an influence map once a while ago but it may need a refresher to include newer influences... but i try to let all of my experiences dictate my artistic output if they speak to me!

Reposted @pentagramdesign From the cosmologies of ancient Black civilizations to the era of slavery and the present day, African Americans have reimagined the futures and possibilities across the globe through Afrofuturism. This ever-evolving concept is explored in “Afrofuturism: A History of Black Futures,” a major exhibition on view @nmaahc in Washington, DC. #EddieOpara and team have designed the companion volume from @smithsonian_books, complete with custom typography inspired by iconic objects in the exhibition.

Three custom display typefaces reference artifacts in the show. These include Parliament Medium and Luke Cage Comic, adapted by the Pentagram designers from the logos on Parliament’s “Mothership Connection” album cover and Marvel’s Luke Cage comic book, respectively. The third typeface is VTC Du Bois, designed by Tré Seals of @vocaltype.co and based on W.E.B. Du Bois’ hand-drawn lettering. (The Pentagram team also developed a typeface inspired by zigzag lettering on the Betty Davis album “They Say I’m Different,” but it was ultimately not used.) Supporting type is set in Halyard by Joshua Darden.

He is an American actor. After pursuing an MFA degree from New York University, Ali began his career as a regular on television series Crossing Jordan (2001–02) and Threat Matrix (2003–04), before his breakthrough role as Richard Tyler in the science fiction series The 4400 (2004–07). His first major film role was in the David Fincher-directed fantasy The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008). Ali won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performances as a drug dealer in the drama Moonlight (2016) and as Don Shirley in the comedy-drama film Green Book (2018).
