ok hear me out: AU where all the smash fighters not explicitly killed in the World of Light opening cutscene somehow survive and have to take on their post-apocalyptic world together

a comprehensive list on which smash fighters died in Galeem's initial attack:

the "not seen killed but there IS a body" tier is for characters who we don't see vaporized by galeem's light but are clearly visible in the scene with all the puppet fighters. I tried my best but that scene is REALLY dark with the only visible light being the glowing eyes so if you can point to a puppet fighter and say "that's X, you can tell because of their Y" I'll take them off the survivor tier

making this tierlist made me realize how few characters we see actually killed. not shulk? not fox? not THE MARIO BROTHERS??? (obviously mario is the one who we see puppeted but we never see his actual death and that surprised me)

and if we count the DLC fighters and Kirby that's a total of 52 survivors of Galeem's attack and that's a lot so to make it more bite-sized i split them up into groups like how you see people group up in zombie movies. they're also grouped by theme!

Have some lore for them, too! Beware my severe bias towards a few groups.

"The Survivor" - Kirby! Survived Galeem's initial attack by temporarily warping to a different dimension.

"The Littles" - Bowser Jr, the Ice Climbers, Little Mac, Pichu, Olimar and Alph, Ness, Lucas, Isabelle, and Meta Knight. These fighters are all children or physically small in some way. They all attempted to use the rocks and mountain faces as cover against the initial attack, but lost their footing and fell off the cliff as Galeem's rays destroyed it. Little Mac caught Pichu and tried to shield her with his own body as they fell.

Olimar and Alph were saved by their Winged Pikmin, Meta Knight saved himself with his wings, Isabelle caught herself with the balloons from her Up Special, and Bowser Jr. used the propeller of his Koopa Clown Car. Olimar and Alph caught Popo and Nana, Lucas grabbed Bowser Jr. with Rope Snake, Meta Knight caught Ness, and Isabelle caught Mac (and Pichu by extension).

By the time they had reached the bottom of the valley, Galeem was so distracted with trying to annihilate Kirby that he didn't notice that The Littles were still alive. They survived the universe-consuming blast by hiding out in a cave, since that blast seemingly did not affect the terrain.

"The Nobles" - Peach, Daisy, Chrom, King Dedede, Ganondorf, Corrin, King K. Rool, Lucina, Roy, and Marth. These fighters are all royalty or have noble blood flowing through their veins.

"The Perserverers" - Cloud, Ike, Ken, Simon, Richter, Ryu, Robin, Luigi, the Miis, Wario, and Shulk. Okay I'll be honest there's no theme with this one. I originally wanted Incineroar in this group and the theme to be they all had jobs that had to do with kicking people's asses but then there was Luigi and Wario and all the other guys and I just threw the theme out the window lol.

"The Non-Humans" - Incineroar, Wolf, Dark Samus, Yoshi, R.O.B, Pac-Man, Ridley, Donkey Kong, and Mr. Game & Watch. These fighters are all non-human. Game & Watch and Pac-Man survived by simply being too Flat but I'm unsure how the others would have escaped.

"The Newcomers" - Piranha Plant, Joker, Hero, Banjo and Kazooie, Terry, Byleth, Min-Min, Steve, Sephiroth, Pyra and Mythra, Kazuya, and Sora. These fighters are the DLC characters. Survived Galeem's initial attack by virtue of being in a different dimension when it happened. Pulled through time and space to the World of Light, they band together to find a way back to their home dimensions (although for some, this team-up happened very begrudgingly).

I don't know much about some of these franchises, so I'm welcome to suggestions to help me develop this AU! Seriously I am on my hands and knees BEGGING for suggestions because so far the only group that is developed is The Littles 😭

so how nerdy are we with mario kart?

okay so i have a concept for the next mario kart game:

Mario Kart X

(pronounced "mario kart cross")

X like the roman numeral because it would be the tenth mario kart game if you count tour as mainline, which i think nintendo does.

cross as in crossover because the gimmick would be the inclusion of other nintendo characters.

the roster would include:

i included the four non-mario characters we've already seen and added four more for an 8:8:8 ratio. i excluded second party franchises like kirby and pokemon for the sake of extreme plausibility. i initially had captain falcon but decided to replace him with olimar since that would've meant three of the four new characters were heavy. plus pikmin seems more relevant now and f-zero is already a racing game, which is another reason i didn't include kirby even if kirby air ride was one game twenty years ago.

but we could get dlc character packs in waves like the bcp. in that case i could see a kirby pack with kirby, meta knight, king dedede, and bandana waddle dee. i think it would also be fun to have a character pack with donkey kong jr., paratroopa, r.o.b., and honey queen.

as for the courses we could see a new triforce cup with different locations in hyrule like death mountain and gerudo valley. we could also have a shrunk down garden for pikmin, somewhere on zebes for metroid, etc.

we could also see new items like a metroid, weapons from splatoon, tools from animal crossing, etc.

ideally it would be a launch title for the switch 2.

Layers 4-6:

Layer 4

-Secret final bosses:

In the later Mario and Luigi games there exist battle arenas (The Gauntlet (BIS), Battle Ring (DT/PJ)) which house stronger variants of already beaten bosses. If the player manages to beat all of them, they're allowed to battle an extremely strong secret final boss, exclusive to the game's battle arena. These bosses are Bowser X (BIS/BISDX), Bowser Junior (DT) and Dry Bowser (PJ)

-SSS battle theme in PJ:

Before having Paper Mario join your party in Paper Jam, while facing off against enemies, a remix of Superstar Saga's "Come On!" will play instead of Paper Jam's usual enemy battle theme.

-Luigi color change:

In artworks and box art of Superstar Saga, Partners In Time and Bowser's Inside Story, Luigi is always seen wearing mint green, instead of his usual warmer colors from the mainline games. However this was changed from Dream Team onward for unknown reasons.

-Super Nut:

The Super Nut is an item found in several Mario and Luigi games, however it has become a meme outside of the community as well. People have started using a picture of Luigi consuming the item as a meme template.

-Challenge runs:

Mario and Luigi fans like to test their skills in so called challenge runs, which are additional rules added on top of a playthrough to make the game harder. They range from rather easy to frustratingly difficult and are often combined with each other. Some examples for popular challenge runs include the No Gear Run, the [Insert Stat] Only Run or the No Hit Run.

-Popple's theme in Fawful 2:

This entry is referring to how in the original version of Superstar Saga, during the second fight with Fawful, Popple's theme plays because of what I assume to be a glitch. Normally during this battle "Fawful and Cackletta" should play just like during the battle with Cackletta in Woohoo Hooniversity. This however is not an issue in the Japanese release as well as the game's remake.

-Bedsmith is gay:

Similar to Luigi acting flustered when talking to Prince Peasley, Bedsmith will blush when interacting with Prince Dreambert. Hearts will start floating around his head and he'll mention how he wants to take a nap on Dreambert. This has understandably caused players to come to the conclusion, that Bedsmith is gay.

-It is I who nuts to that:

"It is I who nuts to that" is a popular inside joke from within the M&L community. It stems from a dialogue spoken by Fawful which reads "It is I who added the nuts to that statue". If the right half of the text box is blacked out, it will read "It is I who nuts to that".

-Mario and Luigi speak gibberish:

Throughout the series, Mario and Luigi are seen speaking Italian to each other as well as to other characters, the sentences only becoming longer as the series progresses. However, the Italian they speak is total gibberish and not translatable.

-Fawful speaks differently in other languages:

For English speaking fans Fawful is known for speaking broken English in all of the games, but he has different speaking quirks in other languages. For example, in the German version of the game, Fawful stutters.

Layer 5

-Starbeans Café cameos:

In the files of Superstar Saga you can find information on how originally, several other Nintendo characters were supposed to have cameos in Starbeans Café. These characters are Link, Fox McCloud, Wario, Samus Aran and Captain Olimar as well as an Excitebike Racer.

-Japanese version differences:

The Japanese version of the original Superstar Saga differs from the European and American release in several ways. Most notably, the game now has two healing blocks which restore HP upon being hit. Cacklettas Soul also has some changes made to her. According to the Mario Wiki, she now appears a bit slimmer and only has 800 hp instead of the usual 1200. Her head lost 20 hp as well, now only having 180 instead of 200, and her arms got 10 additional HP points, now having 90 instead of 80.

-Inflation:

Throughout the entire series you can find several moments of characters (such as Mario or Bowser) getting fat for comedic purposes. The fandom however, likes to joke that this is due to Alphadream having an inflation fetish. This entry can also be interpreted as referring to the exchange rate of Mushroom Coins and Beanbean coins in Superstar Saga.

-Japanese animated commercials:

There exist several commercials from back in the day, when Superstar Saga just got released in Japan. These commercials feature animated segments and even a little bit of voice acting. They're also animated in the iconic Mario and Luigi art style. Here is the YouTube link to one of them.

-A fateful clash callback:

In the original version of Bowser's Inside Story, Dark Fawful didn't have his own battle theme. This was changed with the remake, his new theme, called "A Fateful Clash", now being a very slow and eery sounding callback to Superstar Saga's "Fawful And Cackletta". Many fans have used this to back up their headcanons about the two characters.

-Fawful hides in DT:

In the beginning of Dream Team, one of the people in Zeekeeper costumes the player can speak to, will say the line "I have excitement", mimicking Fawfuls iconic way of speaking. People have interpreted this as Fawful still being alive and hiding under the costume, while others think it's just supposed to be a reference to his character.

-Cackletta had to die two times:

During the battle in Woohoo Hooniversity, Cackletta collapses to the floor after losing the battle against Mario and Luigi, with Fawful saving her life by absorbing her soul and later putting it into Bowser's body. The fact that he had to resort to taking her soul, means that Cackletta's body was dead/would have died seconds later. After the player defeats the final boss, Bowletta collapses to the floor yet again, this time dying due to her soul no longer existing. This means that Cackletta had to die two times, the first time in Woohoo Hooniversity, where Fawful was able to save her, and for the second time in Bowser's castle.

-Kylie Koopa doesn't age:

The protagonists first meet Kylie Koopa in Partners In Time's past, a time where Mario and Luigi are still babies. When they meet her again as adults in Dream Team, Kylie hasn't changed a single bit, seemingly not aging. This has also become somewhat of an insider for M&L fans.

-Every final boss is a variation of Bowser:

Every final boss in Mario and Luigi is linked to Bowser in some way or another. For Superstar Saga it's the final battle's first stage in Bowletta, who is Cackletta possessing Bowser's body. In Inside Story it's Dark Bowser, who is the Dark Star copying Bowser. Dream Team has Dreamy Bowser, who is a stronger form of the regular Bowser after consuming the Dream Stone, and Paper Jam has Shiny RoboBowser, who is a fusion between the regular Bowser and Paper Bowser. Partners In Time's final boss isn't linked to Bowser, however the game's last fight before the credits is Bowser possessed by Elder Shroob.

-Immortal fool:

Immortal fool, sometimes called My immortal fool, is a webcomic written and illustrated by @cammiluna, featuring Fawful as the main protagonist, after the events of Superstar Saga. The comic has left a lasting impact on the community.

Layer 6

-Shroobs frozen in Bowser's castle:

In Bowser's Inside Story, the player can enter a secret area with Mario and Luigi in Bowser's castle. Upon solving a puzzle, the player is greeted with the image of several shroobs frozen in a giant chamber. Three of them manage to escape, leading to a secret boss battle. It is unknown how Bowser managed to capture and freeze the Shroobs, or what would happen if more of them were to escape.

-Pipes inside Bowser:

In Bowser's Inside Story, after consuming the Vacuum Shroom, Bowser not only inhales several people, but parts of his environment as well. Due to him inhaling parts of the pipes spread around the Mushroom Kingdom, Bowser now has pipes leading in and out of his body. People have speculated about what would happen if Bowser were to find one of the pipes' other halfs' and enter his own body.

-Cloaked Beanish:

Searching through the files of Superstar Saga, one is able to find code for an unused beanish character, wearing a black cloak and a long red scarf. It is unknown which role this character would've played in the story. Here is the post with a link to the source.

-Moving backgrounds in SSS:

Originally all battle backgrounds in Superstar Saga were supposed to be moving during combat. In the finished game, the only background moving is the one used during the fight against Cackletta's Soul. You can see it move forward after Mario and Luigi regain their consciousness.

-Gameboy Player:

The Gameboy Player was a device that made it possible to play Gameboy, Gameboy Color as well as Gameboy Advance on the Gamecube. Superstar Saga was one of the games this was possible with.

-Peasley on PIT posters:

In Partners In Time, if you look closely, you are able to spot a poster with Prince Peasley depicted on it in item shops throughout the game. The player is unable to interact with the posters, and they're most likely just supposed to be a reference.

-Cut PIT enemy:

In the files of Partners In Time, you're able to find a cut enemy, going by the name of "Scoot Bloop". When battled, the game will crash upon Scoot Bloop using one of its attacks. Here is the Tumblr post.

-Fawful committed suicide:

Unlike every other villain from the Mario and Luigi series, Fawful does not die after getting beaten by the protagonists in battle. After his defeat during the final boss battle, he returns to Mario, Luigi and Starlow. After a short conversation with the latter, Fawful commits suicide by blowing himself up in an effort to take Mario and Luigi out with him.

-Midbus froze to death:

In the beginning of the second battle with Midbus (not counting the tutorial battle), Fawful shoots Midbus with an ice gun, turning him into Blizzard Midbus. After that, he and Bowser start fighting each other, a battle that Midbus ultimately loses. But instead of collapsing like other antagonists from the series, Midbus steps back and starts getting encased by a block of ice. This might be due to his artificial ice powers malfunctioning. It is assumed that Midbus dies during that scene, as he is never heard from again in later games.

-Beanish cameo in Paper Mario TTYD:

In the game Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, while exploring Rogueport, the player might encounter a Beanish called Podley. He acts as a reference to the Mario and Luigi RPGs.

I'm HONORED you'd consider making a video about my chart! However, I had some problems with answering this as Tumblr would frequently delete all of my progress. I assume this is because of the answer simply being to long, which is why I'll try to tackle three layers at a time. I will add more parts of the explanation with every reblog. I'm truly sorry but this is the only option.

Just as a little refresher, here's the full chart! Explanations are under the cut because this is gonna be long >:)

Alright let's get into this!

Layers 1 - 3:

Layer 1

-Seven games:

In total there's seven games in the Mario and Luigi series, five original titles (Superstar Saga, Partners In Time, Bowser's Inside Story, Dream Team, Paper Jam) and two remakes (Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Junior's Journey)

-Striped socks:

On the original artworks for the Mario and Luigi games, Luigi is seen wearing striped socks, something unique to this series. However, the socks haven't shown up in official artwork since Dream Team.

-Luigi running gag:

In the Mario and Luigi games there exists a common running gag that consist of Luigi being underestimated or completely forgotten by other characters. They'll often praise Mario while then either insulting or downplaying Luigi.

-Giant battles:

In Bowser's Inside Story and Dream Team there exists a form of battles known as "giant battles", during which Bowser (in BIS) and Luigi (in DT) turn massive to face off against giant enemies. The player has to flip their DS/3DS horizontally and dodge/fire off attacks by tapping the touch screen. In Paper Jam, there's also a form of battles called "papercraft battles" in which the player controls a giant paper figurine, depicting one of the game's characters.

-Superstar Saga on Switch:

On February 8th 2023, Nintendo announced the port of several GBA games to Nintendo Switch Online, with Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga being one of them. Superstar Saga is currently the only title to be playable on Switch.

Layer 2

-Fawful in PIT:

In PIT there exists an optional area right underneath Peach's castle, in which you can observe a mysterious hooded figure. If you follow them with Baby Mario and Baby Luigi, the person reveals himself to be Fawful, who quickly starts telling the babies about his plan for revenge. He starts getting more and more emotional during his speech, but tells the babies that there's no need to worry about him. The player can then pay Fawful with beans in exchange for rare badges. This scene foreshadowes the entirety of Bowser's Inside Story, in which Fawful takes over the Mushroom kingdom, making his plan reality.

-The blorbs:

The blorbs are an illness that plagues the Mushroom Kingdom during the events of Bowser's Inside Story. If a Toad consumes a so called "Blorb Mushroom" they will get infected with the disease, causing their bodies to grow large and round, immobilizing them. The blorbs play an important role in the plot, as the illness is an important part of Fawfuls plan to take over the Mushroom Kingdom. During the end of the game, Dr. Toadley manages to defeat the blorbs, using the Miracle Cure.

-Luisley:

Luisley is the name of a popular ship in the M&L community. It is based on the idea of Luigi and Prince Peasley being in a romantic relationship. The game itself seems to heavily support this idea, as Peasley is often seen paying special attention to Luigi, and Luigi blushing when meeting the prince. This Tumblr post explains it in more detail.

-Gold beanie:

In Superstar Saga and Dream Team you can encounter enemies called Beanies. They're basically just green beans with and evil grin and tiny feet, and they're pretty easy to take down. However there exists a rare golden variant of these enemies, which have a high chance of fleeing every turn. Upon beating one, the playing receives a high amount of experience points as a reward.

-Alphadream filing for bankruptcy:

On October 1st, 2019, Alphadream, primarily known for their work on the Mario and Luigi series, filed for bankruptcy. This was most likely due to high development costs and bad revenue in return. What got the studio into that position in the first place probably were the bad sales of Superstar Saga's remake and Bowser Junior's Journey failing horrendously.

-No PIT remake:

While Superstar Saga and Bowser's Inside Story both received remakes, Partners In Time didn't get to enjoy that treatment. This was most likely due to Inside Story having better sales in comparison and Alphadream wanting to remake the most popular game in the series. However, them skipping the second installment and remaking the third game instead, still seems a bit odd.

-Shroobish:

Shroobish is the language spoken by the Shroobs in Partners In Time. It is written in a different alphabet and totally indecipherable. The game does translate some words and sentences for the player, most notably the word destroy.

-Beanish and beanies are related species:

This is a popular theory created by fans that isn't mentioned in the game itself. The theory is based on the fact that Beanish and beanies share a lot of similarities, for example wide grins and green skin tone. The theory states that Beanish used to look similar to beanies, but evolved over time into what we know them as today.

Layer 3

-Cover art style change:

Superstar Saga as well as Partners in Time both have very detailed designs for their box art, while from Bowser's Inside Story onward the design is kept much simpler, just having a white background with the characters placed on top of it. It is important to note that the American version of Superstar Saga's remake uses the modern style, while the European version is a direct callback to the original's box art.

-Paper Jam hate:

Paper Jam is easy the least popular game in the series. This is due to the game's lack of original characters and story telling, which makes it stand out negatively when compared to the rest of the series. It had big potential, being a crossover with the Paper Mario series, but barley incorporated any of its elements, ending up as a rather boring M&L title, with Paper Mario as a playable character.

-Carrot minigame:

The carrot minigame is one of the many minigames present in Bowser's Inside Story and it's remake. Due to it's precise touch screen controls it is notoriously frustrating and difficult to beat, especially for younger players, slowly making it gain kind of a meme status amongst the community.

-Cacklebean:

Much like Luisley, Cacklebean is another popular ship in the M&L community, this time pairing Cackletta with Queen Bean. The idea is often backed up with Cackletta seemingly having a lot of knowledge about Beanbean Castle and its secrets, such as the security system surrounding the Beanstar. Queen Bean and the residents of the Beanbean Kingdom also never seem to mention Cackletta in any negative light whatsoever, often just insulting Fawful instead of her.

-Yoko Shimomura:

Yoko Shimomura is a Japanese composer primarily known for her work in video games, including the Mario and Luigi series. She also composed for games such as Super Mario RPG: Legend Of The Seven Starts and Kingdom Hearts.

-Headcanons:

This is a more community focused entry. Fans of the Mario and Luigi series often have a lot of different headcanons, some just adding more depth to certain characters while others change the story in its entirety. Since everyone's headcanons are different, everyone perceives the games differently and every fan stands out in their own unique and special way. Some popular headcanons include Cackletta being Fawfuls adoptive mother, Popple and Fawful being brothers or Peasley being gay.

-SSS difficulty spike:

The original version of Superstar Saga is kind of notorious for having a really weird difficulty spike with the game being pretty easy over all but then suddenly raising the difficulty out of nowhere before having it decrease again. Some examples of this are Wiggler and Trunkle going down in just a few hits while having much harder battles before and after them, Cackletta in Woohoo Hooniversity being a pretty tough challenge for this point of the game all while having the difficulty decrease again seconds later, and of course the final boss being absurdly hard and coming out of nowhere with the game refusing to prepare you for it at all.

-Popple is suffering from memory loss:

When encountering Popple in Dream Team, he will not recognize Mario and luigi at all, despite mentioning how he had trouble with people looking extremely similar back when he was still in the Beanbean Kingdom.

-Geno in the Fungitown arcade:

In Little Fungitown, the player will encounter Geno from Super Mario RPG while playing the Star 'Stache Smash minigame, where he will moderate the game and explain the rules. Geno is absent from the remake due to him not being owned by Nintendo.

I'm curious what games that have (playable) characters in Smash you've played. Have you considered having a list in your carrd for that?

I do keep lists for my own personal use but I haven't thought about adding a page to the carrd. I'm starting to consider it now that you've suggested it to me, but I haven't decided for certain.

But I can give you a summary of the list I made for myself.

Mario: I've played the series extensively enough to know most of the characters like the back of my hand (I don't know the Koopalings as well as the others); the specific list of which Mario games I've played is long enough that it would clutter this post so it might be better to just ask for that specifically.

Donkey Kong: Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2 (I haven't gotten around to playing 3 yet and I don't have DK64 or any of the newer DKC games)

Zelda: Of the games with the playable Links, I've played Ocarina of Time 3D, Majora's Mask 3D, Twilight Princess, Phantom Hourglass, and Breath of the Wild. I'm currently playing through Wind Waker (I've just entered the Wind Temple), and I've also played Skyward Sword. I have not played either Hyrule Warriors game.

Yoshi: Yoshi's Island is the only one I've finished, but I've played a bit of Yoshi's Story (a childhood fav despite never beating it) and a small bit of Wooly World

Kirby : I've layed Kirby's Dream Land 1-3, Kirby's Adventure, Super Star Ultra, Canvas Curse, Epic Yarn, Return to Dreamland, Triple Deluxe. I've watched a playthrough of Kirby and the Amazing Mirror and Kirby Fighters 2 but not played them; aside from the rest of the main platformers I'm drawing a blank on what else I need to play because almost all of the sub-games/"au" games are all interconnected somehow but I don't know which ones are skippable.

Star Fox: I've played Star Fox 64 3D and since I don't have a Wii U I just watched a playthrough of Star Fox Zero; not ideal but better than nothing

Pokemon: At least one version of the mainline games from gen 4 onwards (Diamond, Platinum (my first), HeartGold, Black, White 2, X & Y, Omega Ruby, Sun, Ultra Sun, Shield, and I'm currently playing through Brilliant Diamond), I've played a few of the side/spinoff games but not very many (PMD Explorers of Time (only partly), Pokemon Ranger Guardian Signs (I own all 3 but I've only played GS), PokePark Pikachu's Adventure, the original Pokemon Rumble, and Battle Revolution (a fav but I've never beaten it)). I haven't played either of Red/Leaf's games, though (I haven't decided whether I wanna buy RBY for my 2ds or emulate FRLG).

Fire Emblem: I've played Awakening and am partway through a second playthrough, and I'm currently working on Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light

Game & Watch: Game & Watch Gallery 1-3, couldn't find anything on 4 that was neither included in the other 3 or relevant to Mr. Game & Watch

Kid Icarus: I've played Uprising and I've played a little bit of the original

Wario: I've played a little bit of Wario Land: Shake It (I think anyways) and I played WarioWare when I was little

Metal Gear Solid: I watched a friend play MGS2 and he's currently playing through MGS3; ironically I only got a brief glimpse of MGS1 (i.e. the game that the actual Solid Snake is the main character of)

Pikmin series: I played Pikmin 3 Deluxe (including the two Olimar side games) and I've watched the TRG playthrough of Pikmin 1 and part of chuggaaconroy's playthrough of 2

Mii/Wii series: Wii Fit, Wii Sports, Wii Play, Nintendo Land, and I've played a tiny bit of the demo for Miitopia (I made Luigi in the game and I've seen the intro)

Pac-Man: A little bit of the original Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man

1 game only: I've played Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed, Metroid NES, a small bit of F-Zero SNES, Ice Climber, part of Mega Man 1 on the legacy collection (got past yellow devil and then dropped it), Little League of Punch-Out NES, Banjo-Kazooie, one low-level classic mode run of Arms, Minecraft, and I have vague memories of one of the Kingdom Hearts games. Right now I'm playing through Earthbound, Final Fantasy 7, and Dragon Quest 11 S.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Which fighters are more anime?

You know, people often accuse certain fighters of being “too anime“. But does being Japanese-styled simply make a character “anime“, even if they’re not in any anime material? “Anime“ itself refers to the grand majority of Japanese cartoons, after all - it’s primarily in the animation. You wouldn’t call manga alone “anime“ because it’s not animated - it’s printed stills. In fact, why the H don’t people use the term “manga“ for these Japanese-styles?

Well, I say that’s not good enough. Plenty of “anime“-looking characters don’t even get their own anime stuff. So here’s what I’m gonna do. I’ll sort the fighters based on what anime material they’ve appeared in.

Higher-up tiers will take priority over lower tiers, so some fighters in the Anime (Series) tier may also be in anime movies, or anime-style commercials. I’ll give some mention to those if I can.

-= ANIME (SERIES) =- - This tier is for series of anime episodes (at least 3) - each episode would of course need to be fairly long, like 15+ minutes. - Amada Anime Series: Super Mario Bros.: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Koopalings - Kirby: Right Back At Ya!: Kirby, Meta Knight, King Dedede - Pokémon (anime): Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Pichu, Mewtwo, Squirtle, Ivysaur, Charizard, Lucario, Greninja, Incineroar - Pokémon Origins: Pokémon Trainer (plus Charizard, Mewtwo, and others) - F-Zero: GP Legend: Captain Falcon - Sonic X: Sonic

-= ANIME (MOVIES) =- - Next tier down is for fighters that appeared in anime-style movies or OVAs. I’ll mention some movies that above characters appeared in, of course. - Super Mario Bros. Ahem...so there you have it! Iggy is more anime than Shulk. Wario is more anime than Lucina. And Piranha Plant is more anime than three of the playable Heroes!

...But if you REALLY don’t want any more “anime” in Smash, then you better kiss Dante, Viewtiful Joe, KOS-MOS, Lloyd Irving, and Heihachi (and probably others) goodbye.

104th SSBU Mains

In the midst of playing Super Smash Bros Ultimate and the trailer for the second half of SNK’s third season, this heap of crap came out of nowhere and now it’s the only thing I can think about

I don’t know a lot about some of these series so please excuse me for any mistakes or inaccuracies!

Eren: Roy. He got into Fire Emblem when he first played SSB:Melee, and he fell in love with that red-haired boy. When he plays Ultimate, Eren is less likely to stick to one character (his argument is that “everyone is good and I love all of them DON’T MAKE ME CHOOSE”), but when he has to, he knows his boy Roy is there for him. Alternatives are Ryu, Mega Man, and Zelda, which, in his mind, if you’re going to play anyone, they’re the best options.

Fun fact: half of the reason he plays Ryu is to bug Armin to be Ken since “they’re best friends and we’re best friends and you look like Ken.” Same for Simon and Richter.

Mikasa: Young Link. LOZ is her favorite video game series by far (Majora’s Mask is her favorite hmu about Mikasa headcanons I love her) and when she heard he was coming back to Smash, she was sold on him before the game was out. She likes any Link, but Young Link has a charm and holds a lot of nostalgia for her. And she likes how he's the only one of the Link trio to have fire arrows. Alternatives are Yoshi (somewhat for the IRS meme but mostly for her fave green dinosaur), Mewtwo for the Pokemon representation, and Samus. Nothing beats an “I’m strong” catchphrase than the first female video game protag.

Armin: Mega Man. Of the video game series he’s gotten into, Legend of Zelda and Mega Man are the ones he’s most loyal too. For Ultimate, he’s more into the mini easter eggs that Mega Man’s moves give to other characters in the franchise than winning the game, and will probably play the single player modes the most, but he doesn’t mind fighting his friends. Alternatives include Pit, Pikachu and Falco; he doesn’t know much about Falco or Pit, except what he’s heard from everyone else, but it’s better than giving into Eren’s whim to play as Simon or Ken.

Jean: Ike. He grew up on that good old GameCube system, so of course he’d go to Ike, whose first game was for GC. He won’t admit it out loud, because he’s a Cool Guy™, but RPGs are near and dear to this boy’s heart. And what better way to share that love than with a blue-haired boy with a big ass sword? Also, he’s pretty good at Smash? So whatever smack talk he has is actually backed by some type of skill and experience. Alternative mains are Zelda, Young Link, and Pichu, all which took a very deep study of each character to develop. It was a serious decision.

Marco: Link. Like Armin, he has limited experience in videogame knowledge, and he’s just here to play with some characters and sass his friends. Link is the one he knows best, and the BOTW design is really pleasing to him. He’s really not here to win or show off how good he is cough cough Erejean. He just wants to have fun! And will do so in ways that make everyone regret handing him the controller, but he doesn’t know that. (Ridley just came out how the hell has he already mastered him?) Alternatives are Ness for the baseball references, Kirby for the deceit, and Marth for a cute blue-haired boy.

Fun fact: it’s a running joke among the 104th nerds that Ness’s design was inspired by Marco, and just to play into the joke, Marco has learned how to imitate Ness’s voice perfectly. For shits and giggles, he’ll spam the “okay” taunt if he’s doing better.

Sasha: Kirby. A classic, in her opinion, and the most versatile character since he can get the move of any player he inhales. There’s nothing more terrifying than a smiling pink glob hitting you with a hammer and nothing will change her mind. She put in so many hours to Kirby’s GBA and DS games when she was a kid that she can’t not play as him. Alternatives are Toon Link and Luigi for the GameCube nods, and Daisy. She makes up for losses by whispering “hi I’m Daisy” under her breath. It has a 95% chance of making them laugh.

Fun fact: the 104th buds have enforced a ban on Sasha’s Luigi when they’re playing together. He is too strong for mortal minds to comprehend.

Connie: Diddy Kong. The peanut gun really sold it for him, and he loves that Donkey Kong being the big goof that he is has a tiny sidekick like Diddy. He’s not here to win or compete seriously—he just wants to have fun. And that fun requires shooting peanuts and slapping opponents with his tail, but he’s not keeping track. Alternatives are Snake for laughs, Villager for the Look Of Death from that one skin (you know which one), and Peach. If he and Sasha are on a team, it’s a nightmare of hip bumps and golf clubs. If they’re facing off, No One Is Safe.

Reiner: Samus. As a kid, his mom wanted him to get into video games that were “safe for the kids” and so there was a bit of a limit to what he could play. But Metroid was something she okayed, and the series now has a special place in his heart. Samus is amazing to him? A bounty hunter in space who fights a giant dinosaur and is also a woman? He’s proud of that. Alternatives include Donkey Kong (more to play with Connie than anything else, really), Mario, and Olimar. Pikmin was another series he was able to play; if he had to choose, the white Pikmin are his favorite.

Bertholdt: Olimar. Sorta like Reiner, his video game knowledge is limited, but more by choice than anything. His knowledge stems from friends and his brothers playing DS games. (Their favorite is Spirit Tracks hmu about Bert headcanons I love him.) He chose Olimar, who he recognizes thanks to Reiner, but also because he looks like he is waaay out of his element. Which is how Bert feels 98% of the time. Alternatives are Marth, Shulk, and Pit; he didn’t choose them until he played at least some of their main games. (Which he did end up doing and enjoyed them all.)

Annie: Incineroar. She’s a Pokemon girl when no one’s watching, and that asshole cat pulling a clothesline on stage is exactly why she’s playing the game. She didn’t choose Litten when she played Sun/Moon (Rowlet is her dear round boy), but by god if she’s not going to take her chance. She was skeptical of Incineroar at his release but once she played him, she was a fan. The stone-like facade she wears playing him doesn’t help either—it’s win or death. Alternatives are King K. Rool, Zelda, and Ridley. She makes heavy characters look easy and the 104th does not appreciate it.

Ymir: Little Mac. A 5′7″ boxer from the Bronx is squaring up to fight a fire-breathing dragon, an anthropomorphic hedgehog, and a pink blob that wants to put her to sleep. It doesn’t matter—he’s here to beat everyone up and he won’t stop until he wins. She may be biased (modern au headcanon that she’s from the Bronx what up) which some will allege is her reason for picking Little Mac, but that’s just slander to her. Alternatives include Mega Man (after so many years of not having that iconic blue boy), Chrom (“that’s an ugly ass tattoo put some sleeves on”), and Sheik.

Fun fact: it takes every bit of her lesbian heart to not choose the girls because the 104th knows her attraction to long blonde hair and is waiting for her to do it. And sometimes, you need Peach to shut them up.

Historia: Marth. He’s a royal blue boy! Look at how pretty! Soft headcanon that Historia likes fighting games and RPGs because hello punching bad guys and using sword to battle evil? Yes please she wants that. She’ll distract everyone with praises of her character and “how beautiful” they are while attacking the 104th with every chance she gets. She’s here to win, and when she will, she just smiles and says “don’t worry we’re all winners.” But everyone knows who the One True Winner is. Alternatives are Ryu, Zero Suit Samus, and Pichu. When she chooses Pichu, the 104th buds know the game is over.

It’s a mess and I forgot some ships lol.

Link is shipped with 11 people, down 1 from last time. Peach with 8, one up from last time. Samus ties with her once again. Lucina's up to 7. Pit got 6 again and Marth’s tied with him. Obviously, Piranha plant is the most shipped since it’s shipped with everyone.

List and useless explanations:

OTP: Roy x Marth, they're my mains lol... But like, there's kind of an unintended story line with them. Roy was short in Melee but then he left in Brawl. Then he came back and was taller and different from Marth in 4. Now he's definitely taller in Ultimate and he's looking to be one of the best swordfighters in the game, it's kinda like Roy's proving himself to Marth. And now Marth's side taunt is "I won't lose!" just like Roy's. It's goes from Roy trying to be like Marth and looking up to him to him becoming Marth's equal. It was the first SSB ship I got into because of the "if you were gay" animation. And it's like the hottest ship in Smash Bros since Roy's really hot. Love: Mario x Pauline, I fucking forgot to put it. Mario x Peach, no explanation needed. Link x Zelda/Sheik, the fact that they're from different time lines made the ship more interesting. Link x Peach, I love it, it's cute and I love the idea of Peach having a crush on him. Link x Marth, it's hot, it's cute, you can have them love each other, hate each other. Underrated af. Link x Pit, I love rival ships. They're really cute together. Link x Ike, yeah, I love shipping Ike with short people. They're hot together. Kirby x Jigglypuff, they're both pink puffs. Kirby x Meta Knight, it's so cute. I headcanon Kirby as pretending to be a baby so that Sakurai treats him nicely when he's actually pretty mature and has fucked your mom. Ignore the last part. Luigi x Daisy, they need to get laid. Ness x Lucas, they're so cute together and they've got powers in common. Marth x Caeda, the only woman for Marth's heart. Lucina x Inigo, I always put them together in Awakening. Lucina x Shulk, futuuuuuuurrrrreeeeeeee!!!!!! Lucina x Samus, it's hot. Roy x Lilina, sometimes I forget that it's not canon. I headcanon that Roy's got a thing for blue hair and blue eyes. Chrom x Robin, they're perfect together. I can't play Awakening without having them get married. It makes the game so much better. Even the devs ship it. I'm so glad Robin can fight alongside her husband in Ultimate. Ike x Pit, now that PoR!Ike is back, it's better. They're really cute together. I think their personalities work great together. Ike x Soren, why isn't it canon? It's better than all the canon fe ships. If there's a RD remake, I hope it's possible to make them canon. Samus x Snake, it's a great ship. It doesn't feel as childish as Samus x Little Mac/Captain Falcon. Love it! Samus x Bayonetta, I really started shipping it when Bayo came out since they're both the most mature ladies in Smash. Samus x Palutena, hot. Bayonetta x Palutena, they adopted Kirby and Joker and now I ship them. Palutena x Lucina, the screenshot lol. Wii Fit x Little Mac, they're both fit. Cloud x Sephiroth, foe yay... Cloud x Tifa, Tifa's best girl. Diddy x Dixie, why is my girl not in smash? Like: Mario x Daisy, it's cute for when I want a break of the usual ships. Link x Corrin, anything with Link is cute. Link x Cloud, two hot blonds, add in some rivalry and you've got a hot ship. Link x Shulk, Link x anyone is cute. Link x Roy, I prefer them both with Marth but they're still cute together. Link x Lucina, I really ship Link with a shit ton of people. Fox x Falco, they have ho yay. Fox x Wolf, they have foe yay. Pikachu x Jigglypuff, kawaii. Luigi x Peach, look at Mario x Daisy. Pit x Dark Pit, it's cute but I wish Dark Pit looked less like Pit but then it wouldn't really be dark Pit... Pit x Viridi, she's lying about her crush on Link, Cloud, Roy... I know you like him, Viridi! Samus x Captain Falcon, CF loves her. Samus x Little Mac, cute height difference. Samus x Wii Fit, hot.
