Luffy vs Kizaru just started and this panel is so weird to me in a good way.
I've been a One Piece fan for almost 8 years now (from age 13 to 21). The Admirals were unimaginably strong pre-skip. Even post, our heroes could only stall them, and only then cause they weren't taking things seriously or didn't really want to hurt the Straw Hats. Even against other god-tier characters we've seen an Admiral get hurt badly exactly once (Whitebeard vs Akainu) and even then he was fine pretty quick.
The Emperors were just as strong or stronger, sure, but we never saw them fight until their own arcs. With the Admirals, it felt like Oda would never write them losing. That was for the end of the series, always at least 5 years in the future, a far-off day that would never actually come, and that's how it's been since Aokiji showed up in 2003.
Then a couple days ago Luffy catches an Admiral, not even a newbie but a true blue pre-timeskip Admiral, off-guard and hurts him against his will, and it's not a fluke. It feels so unreal but it happened. And it's gonna KEEP happening. One Piece is really gonna end someday.

So the SBS for newest volume was revealed and...
SBS corner isn't considered spoilers for me, but if it is for you, please skip this post, duh!
I just wanted to point out I was part of the camp that said it was Kizaru since the beginning, so even though it's not stated black on white (it's white on black, actually), I still think this is as close to a confirmation as we will ever get, so let me brag for a second:
Feels good, haha.
Now down to the nitpicks, so *why* did I think it was Kizaru from the start? (well, I did suspect Caribou too, but it's later revealed he was with Augur and Devon instead).
At first it was just a fight, Luffy vs Kizaru. He calls it "playing around" and Luffy declares that the same "playing around" is Luffy's job. It's important to remember that, because I think Kizaru realized he could use that for his own purposes.
Just when Saturn arrives and soon after Luffy loses G5, Kizaru's attitude changes to "this is not good". This change in situation was something he didn't consider to be desirable, despite that it tipped the scales in favour of the Marines.
Then Kizaru takes his sweet time when he realizes Luffy finally has reached his limit. I'm not saying this fight didn't take a toll on Kizaru, he was panting before at the very least, but let's not forget that if he moved now he would have to finish Luffy off. Seems like his original plan was to push Luffy beyond his limit before any other players (like Saturn) arrive.
"Someone gimme food"
Kizaru realizes the situation is rapidly escalating now and in all the wrong ways. Strawhats and the present-on-scene Vegapunks are all immobilized, Luffy run out of energy, Sentomaru got captured, Saturn is holding Bonney and giving order for Marines to shoot at her. One second of hesitation is enough for Bonney to lose her life. And all Kizaru can do now is to be worried about his dear friends and witness them dying. Or perhaps... he could help tip the scales a bit again.
And in next moment Saturn realized someone gave Luffy food. No one saw Luffy move away, no one is near him either, Strawhats are still immobilized btw (including Sanji and Franky). This thing could have been done only by Caribou or Kizaru, but Kizaru would be faster and indeed impossible to spot if he moved with his speed of light.
And we can see Kizaru also moved, he's no longer lying down but sitting instead. He doesn't say anything, but he has the "..." thought bubble that looks very distressed (the tore-up border of the bubble is betraying Kizaru's emotions in this scene). Is he perhaps thinking something like "I hope no one will figure it out" or "I think no one should have noticed"? Would be pretty fitting.
Overall it was a good plan, but Luffy didn't restore his strength in time to help Bonney. It was actually Kuma's unexpected arrival that saved her (very touching moment).
And that's Kizaru's only reaction to Kuma's arrival. His body language shows relief, but his words kinda contradict that.
Only after Kuma punches Saturn, Sanji, Franky and Vegapunk are "released" from the immobility spell, which causes Sanji to immediately collapse to the ground, apparently. This is the definitive proof that they couldn't have been the ones who helped Luffy before.
Kizaru's back to "playing around", openly declaring he just wants to test Strawhats growth. Very interesting, considering the situation worsened for the Marines. By all means he should be quick and down to business instead of playing around. Seems he made his decision of how to manage the situation: again, by stalling for time and observing how it all proceeds, while just resorting to "playing around".
Here though he declares something contradictionary to his behaviour from mere moments ago. Perhaps beause he's speaking to Saturn. He emphasized the point that too many people are around and they need to be quick. But when you're quick you might have to prioritize impact over efficiency (which leaves openings for possible escape - Kizaru wouldn't be able to guarantee every target is actually eliminated).
Kizaru probably still was hoping to avoid this result, but once he realized he can't save Vegapunk no matter what, he decides it's better if he kills him himself. At least it will be quick with his powers, you know? The least he can do for his friend is to relieve him from his suffering, make sure his death is a bit more humanitarian than slowly bleeding out. Before Saturn actually stabbed Vegapunk, Kizaru was not ready to make this decision btw, always choosing to do something else (go after Strawhats, engage in the fight with Luffy, lying down beaten up).
This scene further proves my point. Kizaru assures them this is a mercy killing that won't hurt a bit. Because he believes the only alternative would be a very painful death instead. Thankfully him betting on Luffy was a good move, because it's Luffy who stops him here. So it officially looks like Kizaru did everything he could to kill Kuma and Bonney, but the enemy stopped him, so the end result can't be blamed on Kizaru. He's doing that dance between stalling the fight and avoiding the worst case scenario for most of Egghead's arc.
"I'm in a real pickle now". Yes, he is indeed. Sanji is cute btw for offering him an easy way out, lol. Kizaru will still have to write that apology letter to Akainu anyway.
And finally Luffy sent him flying far, far away, and this time Kizaru doesn't even try to get up anymore. That's it for him. He had to kill Vegapunk with his own hands and I think he didn't expect how big of a toll it will take on him. Luffy in a way provided him another easy way out of the situation, because if Kizaru just stays here and hopes for the Strawhats to take Bonney to safety, then at least he would have saved her.
So this is what I believe Kizaru was trying to do all this time. Avoid killing Vegapunk somehow (though he knew there was a really slim chance for that, but a man can still hope, right?) and at the very least make sure Bonney won't die on Egghead. Kizaru indeed has a heart, but he also has to make sure not to lose face and he can't really disobey or ditch his responsibilities as a Marine Admiral. But he definitely wasn't lying when he said he was forced to kill his best friend, and he truly wished he wouldn't have to do that.
That being said, I wonder what's his plan from this point onward. Some people suggested he might retire after this, but I think somehow that would erase the whole point of his struggle here, it would make it lose it's meaning. But he definitely showed us a little bit of his rebellious side. Though we need to remember, he ended up being just a circumenstencial ally to Strawhats, at least at this point in time.
What's the moral of this story? NEVER TRUST A "..." THOUGHT BUBBLE. It hides secrets, every. single. time. If Oda delibaretely hides character's thoughts from us, but emphasizes it by using "..." thought bubble, then ask questions, dig deeper, there's something to discover there. Also I don't mean speech bubbles, just thought bubbles. This has been a thing in many other mangas, it's not just a One Piece visual storytelling gimmick. For example, Death Note used that device in exactly same way, pfff.

i'm caught up with end of wano, so here's some parallels from one piece that could be or don't have to be connected, but are still pretty cool.
long post ahead & wano spoilers
protecting new era:
rayleigh protecting zoro at sabaody from an attack by kizaru, ch 511
luffy protecting law from an attack by doflamingo, with same move as rayleigh above, dressrosa ch 782
at the end of wano, ch 1055, shanks telling ryokugyu a similar thing as rayleigh above ("don't pick the buds before they sprout. their era is only just the beginning"),
shanks "when the new shoots that just changed pirating history are exhausted, (..) are you that afraid of the new era?!"
---
zoro king of hell
same page as luffy protecting law - with haki clashing against doflamingo, the panels after that talking about supreme king haki - qualities of a king,. in this context for doflamingo, ch 782
at amazon lily ppl reacting to luffy using supreme king haki, while he doesn't know he just did, ch. 519. "that's the haki of the chosen ones' only one in millions has that spirit!"
vs, zoro unknowingly unleashing haki of supreme king for (possibly) the first time, ch 997
and later during his rooftop fight against kaido, (and still denies/ doesn't know what they're talking about, which is very interesting). ch 1010
then during his fight with King, unleashing haki, which makes others around fall unconscious (as mentioned above to doflamingo is a sign of supreme king haki), ch 1033
and some more chapters later, claiming the title of King of Hell (funny in this context it was told to doflamingo he was chosen by the heavens, and for zoro he became the king of hell. smth smth about the character work there).,
and as always - connected to luffy and his dreams!. ch 1036
then there's the asura figure surrounding zoro's powers,
and i find it so interesting that on wikipedia about asura (which zoro's sword and fighting styles are also based on with hindu and buddhist religions) is mentioned they're "considered enemy of the gods"
i like how it's the same phrase as we also heard in the manga before form law's flashbacks about corazon, ch 764
this is in the context of the people with the D. name, and then mostly used for law himself, and luffy and how far he's come to truly wreck the world government, as well as them being a threat to the celestial dragons.
luffy and nika:
from point above, i like how the "enemy of gods" being applied to people with the name D. is also interesting in the context of luffy awakening his devil fruit powers, which are named sun god nika. (i know that in the phrase "enemy of gods" mean gods as the celestial dragons, but it's still interesting)
which doesn't take away from luffy's character as i was a bit worried at first.
he's testing the new skills and powers, and he sees how he can reach the new limits he couldn't before. it might have been the devil fruit that chose who would eat it, but it's luffy and his dream that make the decisons., ch 1045
and ch 1049
luffy in ch 507 & 1053, his core ideals are still the same
---
not fighting someone
shanks not fighting the mountain bandits, and luffy not understanding it, ch 1
jaya arc, luffy and zoro not fighting against bellamy, and nami not understanding at first, ch 225
and ch 1054, momonosuke telling yamato not to fight the navy guy because he wants to be able to protect wano, and let yamato go to the seas as he wants to - it's just that similar energy that luffy has when he tells someone not to fight (or when to fight), without almost any explanations.
also loved this usopp moment!, - could be paralelled to his whole character arc. ch 1036.
he's so real for saying this to kin and kiku (and samurai in general). he's always scared and sometimes can be acting like a coward, but he always, always, stands up for his crew and fights to live through whatever hell luffy puts in front of them.
-- wano was so good and there are so many thoughts about one piece in my head now, about each of the characters and their development/meanings/themes! OTL
#one piece#one piece spoilers#wano spoilers#one piece parallels#one piece meta#kinda#monkey d. luffy#roronoa zoro#trafalgar law#yamato#kozuki momonosuke#red haired shanks#zolu#if you squint#gif:op manga#gif:op meta#mine#i love their canon dynamics so much!! theres always something. zoro development? flashback to their first meeting or mihawk fight#someone telling luffy his crew is in danger? dont worry about that. zoro is there. his whole crew has his back!#someone saying they thought zoro is the captain? wrong! zoro doesnt forget to mention that luffy will be the pirate king. etc etc#insane about this animanga. truly#long post

A very little detail about luffy that just came to mind (probably not important but pls excuse my tunnel vision when it comes to zolu), but zoro literally was the first strawhats that luffy shedded his tears for???
Mihawk vs Zoro. You can even see his tears falling from both eyes. From the left eye (1st pic) and right eye (2nd pic).
And not only that but i think it happened twice?
You can see rayleigh stopping kizaru from hurting zoro. Then if you look at the bottom panel, after seeing rayleigh you can spot the little snot from luffy's nose and a single tear from his left eye. Luffy was very relieved to see rayleigh, but more importantly, he was very relieved because rayleigh had just saved zoro from kizaru's attack.
Now the more i think about it, those two moments (when luffy cried(?) for zoro) were never really a grandiose one with all the big tears and ugly sobbing. But well, if you think about it, that kind of thing wouldn't be possible(?) not really... cuz at the time when those two situations occurred, zoro was in incredible danger AND with powerful foe/s around. Luffy didn't have the time to properly process his emotions. Like heck after mihawk slashed zoro, luffy even tried to attack mihawk. And with the sabaody arc one, the situation was even more chaotic..
So honestly? Im just thinking about how zoro probably was the first person outside of luffy's family and all of his loved ones from foosha village (imma include shanks and his crew just bcs) that ever made him cry. I'm talking about the 'you are important to me, i care about you, and i don't want you getting hurt/dead' kind of tears, and ughh, idk let me just excuse myself and weep for a bit
That being said, if im not wrong i think zoro and usopp are the only two strawhats who ever made their captain cry twice. (Luffy cried after the battle with usopp (usopp leaving the crew) and after usopp rejoining the crew)
#zolu#luzo#monkey d. luffy#roronoa zoro#one piece#btw i reread the manga like a LOT and cant say the same about the anime so i'd rarely talk abt the anime?? just fyi(?)#also uhh tbh luffy almost cried for usopp during the syrup village arc but keyword: almost#baratie arc#sabaody arc#BUT i'd probably talk more abt the anime if i rewatch certain eps/arcs idk

One Piece Ch. #1093 "Luffy vs Kizaru" SPOILERS
Gear 5 Luffy seems to always have the same clothes despite Luffy having been wearing something completly different, like I can assume his shorts were under the shirt/dress but are you telling me the flip flops were inside the boots
No, Atlas I like you I don't want you to get hurt again
I like that Lucci has been downgrade to a first mate problem instead of a captain one
Ok, she must be
----------------
Basically, most of the chapter are the fights, so I have not much to comment on those, but this chapter makes it really clear that Bonney is actually an infant because older man had refer always at adult young woman as "young lady" never "little girl"
