Memphis design could read as madcap, illogical, even offensive. The Chicago Tribune called it “… Vibrant, bold, funny, provocative, anti-modernist, fantastic, crazy, vital, insulting, surreal, pop, punk, funk, New Wave, eccentric and bizarre … but never boring.” Other critics were more thoughtful: “Memphis startles one into asking ‘what should an object really look like? And ‘why should we want it to look the way it has always looked?’” wrote the Financial Times’ Lucia van der Post.
The palette combined pastel and acid-bright hues: pink, lavender, mint, gray, cobalt blue, bottle green, canary yellow, chartreuse, purple, orange. - these are the colours I used in my final poster

MA Fashion and Textile Practices Major Project Path - 29th August
The Bauhaus cont.
After the closure of Bauhaus Weimar, Walter Gropius was determined Bauhaus would continue, so he embarked on a promotional tour. He wanted the Bauhaus ethos to reach far and wide, and enable the general public to gain a better understanding of their ideologies. On this tour he met the woman who was to become his second wife - Ise Frank, or later to be known as ‘Frau Bauhaus’. This promotional tour got the desired effect and Gropius received many bids for a new location. He had been offered a piece of land near the Junker’s Aircraft factory in Dessau which seemed ideal, so decided to design and build the new Bauhaus here. Although Gropius was never an overtly political figure the Dessau government was Communist in its thinking, so he felt his Bauhaus ethos would be better understood this time around.

The building went well and the new Bauhaus was completed in 1926, with the new school opening in 1927. Bauhaus Masters had separate accommodation away from the main building but were still very much immersed in the school culture. Gropius employed the architect Hannes Meyer as director of the newly established building department. In April 1928 Gropius appointed Meyer the new director of Bauhaus, Dessau. This was a huge surprise for the Masters of the Bauhaus - he was its founding father, although Gropius insisted he was to be present in a consultative capacity. Meyer introduced new workshops on technology, photography, natural science and the humanities as well as dissecting the arts and sciences. In the latter part of 1928 he introduced free painting classes, which enabled the general public to attend the school.
Infiernoseguro, n.d. (2017). Hannes Meyer. [Photograph]. Retrieved from http://infiernoseguro.blogspot.com/2017/11/la-bauhaus.html.
Meyer thought that Bauhaus Weimar had lost its way somewhat, he felt they had become less focused on producing work ‘for the people’ because their products were now beyond the financial reach of the average person. Meyer’s (1928) new slogan was:
“The people’s needs instead of the need for luxury!”
Meyer’s comments became increasingly more critical of the Bauhaus ethos, causing tensions amongst the other Masters as well as Gropius himself. Meyer’s opinions on Bauhaus, along with his strong Marxist views began to filter through to the students, who began to become more political and dissident under his influence. From this his role of director came into question, Gropius, along with the Lord Mayor of Dessau and other Masters such as Wassily Kandinsky felt he should be dismissed, the reasoning being he incited ‘Communist machinations’. Although the local government at Dessau was communist in their political leanings, a director of a major art school should not be so politically biased. In August 1930 - with final say from the government - Meyer was dismissed from his post. With a personal recommendation from Gropius, Bauhaus quickly replaced Meyer with architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe as its new director.
Rohde, W. (1934). Porträt Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. [Photograph]. Retrieved from https://www.bauhaus100.com/the-bauhaus/people/directors/ludwig-mies-van-der-rohe/.
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was the third and final director of Bauhaus. Under his direction the school changed again, it became more experimental and the curriculum changed to reflect that. To avoid any political disturbances amongst the students he interviewed each one individually to uncover what politics they favoured. Any communist students - a prior fans of Meyer - were thrown out of the school in a bid to restore harmony. Harmony was only temporarily restored, a newly elected local government with a National Socialist majority began to put pressure on the school, they did not agree with Mies van der Rohes’ experimental educational methods - he was inter-nationalist not national socialist. In an attempt to comply he reluctantly committed to a more conventional curriculum, combined workshops and the preliminary course was stopped altogether. These changes however were not enough and the government stopped funding for the school entirely. In 1932 - with its financial support removed - the school was forced to close. Some of the students were arrested by Nazi forces and it was discussed that the school should be burned to the ground. Sadly, the Nazis took over the building and used it as a communications base.
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was determined that the Bauhaus should continue as a privately run school. In 1933 he opened the third incarnation of the Bauhaus in a disused telephone factory in Berlin. The Nazis again attempted a closure but was allowed to remain open on the condition they expelled all their Jewish and communist faculty members. This was the final straw for Mies van der Rohe, he decided he would rather close the school than hand over the students and school to the National Socialists. Mies van der Rohe (n.d) said of education:
“True education is concerned not only with practical goals but also with values. Our aims assure us of our material life, our values make possible our spiritual life”.
After the closure of the Bauhaus, many of its students and Masters travelled all over the world, taking with them the fundamental beliefs of the school. The Bauhaus Manifesto still holds true today with many artists, architects and designers following its basic principles, or are influenced by its ‘form follows function’ ideologies. Looking at large multi-national companies like IKEA, with their nesting tables and anglepoise inspired lighting it is hard to imagine a piece which doesn’t take the Bauhaus aesthetic into consideration.
IKEA, n.d. (2019). Forsa Lamp. [Photograph]. Retrieved from https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/forsa-work-lamp-nickel-plated-10146766/?cid=gb%7Cps%7Cpla%7C%7C%7C%7C&gclid=Cj0KCQjw753rBRCVARIsANe3o47Ba8qnofLrx8G0wKV-cTIqNwkYw3z0EQkUydK-E4jfbKIxPUBQ0p8aAuy2EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds.
So many aspects of our lives have been influenced by Bauhaus aesthetic: The ‘less is more’ attitude of fashion design has seen brands such as Cos and Monki keep there designs simple and functional, yet possibly adding clean, geometric Bauhaus inspired prints for focus. Children’s toys saw the likes of Lego and the use of simplified mechanical parts in their construction games. The way we construct our advertising and literature will ever be effected by the invention of sans-serif fonts and the way we consider layout and editorial work. Most Universities have an Art, Design and Architecture department - as we do at the University of Huddersfield, this can be attributed to Walter Gropius and his idea that combining creative disciplines under one roof can only serve as a positive attribute and aid collaboration and inspiration amongst students.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe himself moved to the USA where he developed the worlds first skyscrapers. Although Mies van der Rohes’ buildings were intended for urban living they were eventually utilised as corporate structures to promote capitalism, something he was against. It is odd that today’s politics are seemingly following the narrative that eventually saw the closure of Bauhaus. Countries like Italy, USA, Austria, Hungary and Poland are now seeing far right tendencies emerging within their own politics. These places are becoming ever increasingly intolerant of cultural institutions and deeming them less necessary for the future. Currently the UK is not far behind!

Police investigations, rehab, and new accusers: the latest in the Harvey Weinstein saga

Harvey Weinstein is pushing pause on his life as he reportedly seeks treatment for sex addiction, but the scandal surrounding him continues to blow up.
On Wednesday, the disgraced movie mogul — who has been accused of sexual misconduct by more than 20 women spanning several decades — flew by private plane bound for Arizona, according to TMZ. The website reports that he’s getting treatment in the Scottsdale area. It capped off another another eventful day for the former honcho of The Weinstein Co. Earlier, he had a dispute with his daughter Remy at her L.A. home, which drew the LAPD. He gave photographers the finger outside his attorney’s office. He also spoke out to the press via a statement to Page Six (in which he described himself as “profoundly devastated. I have lost my wife and kids, whom I love more than anything else”), as well as a TMZ videographer (he said he’s “not doing OK,” but was “hoping for a “second chance,” adding, “We all make mistakes.”
New police investigations
The news hasn’t stopped, however. On the heels of the Manhattan D.A. urging more Weinstein victims to come forward, the NYPD has launched a criminal investigation into the movie exec stemming from an assault allegation in 2004. No details were given, but the New Yorker investigative piece that came out on Wednesday — the same day Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie told the New York Times they were victims of Weinstein’s harassment — Lucia Stoller, who now goes by Lucia Evans, told the magazine that Weinstein forced her to perform oral sex in 2004. (A spokesperson for Weinstein issued a strong denial to the magazine, saying, “Any allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied by Mr. Weinstein.”)
Shortly after that, the Guardian newspaper reported that there is also an investigation into Weinstein for alleged sexual offenses in the U.K. A spokesman for London’s Metropolitan Police told Reuters: “The Metropolitan Police Service was passed an allegation of sexual assault by Merseyside Police on Wednesday, 11 October. The allegation will be assessed by officers from the Child Abuse and Sexual Offences Command.” The spokesman said police won’t identify the person involved.
New accusers coming forward
On Thursday, Kate Beckinsale came forward claiming Weinstein acted inappropriately with her when she was a teenager. It follows the same story as many of the other women: She says she had a meeting with him in a hotel, he greeted her in a bathrobe, and — despite her being 17 — he offered her alcohol. She said she left the meeting “unscathed.” Oddly, “A few years later he asked me if he had tried anything with me in that first meeting,” she recalled. “I realized he couldn’t remember if he had assaulted me or not.” Meanwhile, Bond girl Léa Seydouxalso shared her story publicly for first time of having to fight off advances of Hollywood producer in Paris hotel room. “We were talking on the sofa when he suddenly jumped on me and tried to kiss me,” she told the Guardian. “I had to defend myself. He’s big and fat, so I had to be forceful to resist him. He tried more than once. I pushed him physically. I think he respected me because I resisted him.”
Rose McGowan (briefly) silenced on social media
The actress, who has said that Weinstein sexually harassed her 20 years ago (the New York Times‘s original story noted she reached a $100,00 settlement with the studio exec), has been using social media to speak out again him, his brother (and Weinstein Co. exec) Bob Weinstein, Ben Affleck, and others. One of her tweets, which included a private phone number, led to Twitter suspending her account for 12 hours. However, by Thursday she was back in business after said tweets was deleted. Of the suspension, McGowan wrote, “THERE ARE POWERFUL FORCES AT WORK.”
TWITTER HAS SUSPENDED ME. THERE ARE POWERFUL FORCES AT WORK. BE MY VOICE. #ROSEARMY #whywomendontreport

The latest on Mrs. Weinstein
Georgina Chapman, Weinstein’s second wife and the Marchesa designer, who announced days ago that was leaving him, has reportedly reached out to Huma Abedin, the soon-to-be ex-wife of convicted sex offender Anthony Weiner, according to Page Six. Meanwhile, Weinstein told the New York Post‘s gossip column that in addition to be “profoundly devastated” over the scandal and losing his wife, “I fully support her decision. I didn’t stand in Georgina’s way when we discussed a separation, I encouraged her to do what was in her heart. I know she has to do what is best for the children, for herself and her business, she employs 130 people. I don’t want her or my children to be hurt any more than they already have. I truly love Georgina, and I hope one day we can reconcile, although right now I don’t know if that could possibly happen.”
The Ben Affleck factor
Affleck, who said he had no idea his good pal Weinstein had been acting inappropriately, has been dragged into the scandal. On Thursday, Hilarie Burton reminded everyone that the actor had groped her years ago on TRL, which he apologized for. But that opened the floodgates. An old interview he did, in which he got handsy with a Canadian reporter, started circulating, but she came to his defense, saying it was out of context. However, makeup artist Annamarie Tendler, who is the wife of comedian John Mulaney, made a new claim that Affleck groped her at a Hollywood party in 2014, saying she was seeking an apology as well.
Jason Momoa backlash
Someone not attached to Weinstein is now being dragged on the internet as well. Aquaman star Jason Momoa started trending on Twitter Thursday when an old clip of him making a really bad joke about rape, while sitting on a panel with his then-Game of Thrones co-stars, was recirculated.
tw: rape
a horrific clip of jason momoa saying he loved working on #gameofthrones bc he "got to rape beautiful women." men are trash. pic.twitter.com/K2RBmsWEt6
— elizabeth (@peeanofreek) October 12, 2017
Something else being recirculated today is an old clip of Paltrow, one of Weinstein’s many accusers, from 1998 in an interview with David Letterman on the Late Show. During the bit, she called Weinstein a “coercer.”
youtube
Sharing stories of similar misconduct
The bright spot in all this is how the Weinstein scandal has encouraged so many women — and men — to speak out about harassment they’ve endured. James Van Der Beek, of Dawson’s Creek fame, revealed that he had his “ass grabbed by older, powerful men.” Westworld star Evan Rachel Wood made a 15-minute video explaining why she cannot name the “powerful, entitled, rich, narcissistic white men” who raped her. Jamie Lee Curtis called Weinstein a “brutish thug” in a personal essay which shared her own sexual harassment story.
And we suspect these types of stories will keep coming.

2017 READING UPDATE
Wow, April. I had been hoping to post updates -- mainly on my 365 short story goal -- monthly(ish), but the last was in the beginning of February and here we are.
Well, let’s get going anyway.
With the 365 short story goal, the idea was that I’d read a variety of stories from a variety of places by a variety of writers, but that’s proving harder that I thought. I fell off the reading wagon a little in February and couldn’t muster the energy to search for new stories, so I just stuck with Lucia Berlin’s A Manual for Cleaning Women. Honestly, I cannot recommend it enough. It’s probably the best collection of stories I’ve ever read, in every way. The writing, the stories, the arrangement, even just the physical appeal of it, it’s stunning. I’ll share a few of my favourite stories a little later.
I also finally read The Embassy of Cambodia by Zadie Smith (delightful), and picked up The Vegetarian by Han Kang. I want to start reading more work in translation, although I didn’t even realize the book was Korean when I first picked it up (I can be so observant sometimes!). Most recently, I finished a book of poetry for the first time in a long time: In the Small Hours by Erin Brubacher, a wonderful little book that I read in 8 minutes at work.
March was a funny month -- primarily because February was fucking terrible. I was unbearably depressed for several weeks, and had to scale back a lot of my goals for the year just so I could stay afloat. When it finally started to pass, I decided to celebrate by doing my favourite thing: buying books. I grabbed nine books in two days at two different bookstores, and I couldn’t be happier. I just started one of them: Fra Keeler by Azareen Van Der Vliet Oloomi, and it’s perfect so far.
And now the stories! Here are my top picks since the last post:
“The Rental Heart” by Kirsty Loga, from Word-o-Mat first edition
“Jon” and “Adams” by George Saunders, both from The New Yorker. I also started reading Tenth of December, because I’m intrigued by Saunders’ writing and trying to decide if I love it or not. I’ve really enjoyed “Victory Lap,” “Sticks,” and “Puppy” from the collection so far.
“The Depressed Person” by David Foster Wallace
“I Still Don’t Even Know You” by Michelle Berry, in Taddle Creek
“Yeah Yeah Sorry Sorry” by Holly C Lam, in carte blanche 28
“Idea for a Sign,” “The Two Davises and the Rug,” and “A Story Told to Me By a Friend,” by Lydia Davis, from can’t and won’t
“Bettering Myself” from Odessa Moshfegh, from Homesick for Another World
“Getting Out” by Cedar Bowers, in Joyland
“Utero” by Rudrapriya Rathore, in Minola Review
“Becoming Carys” by Erin Klassen, from You Care Too Much
“Me and Jane” by Lulu Miller, on Catapult
And of course, as I mentioned, all of Lucia Berlin’s collection was amazing, but some standouts were “Here It Is Saturday,” “Mijito,” “Fool to Cry,” and “Dear Conchi,” among many, many others. (This isn’t even a complete selection of five-star stories.)

Finding something special
When you’ve found something special on your travels and it’s spotted by someone whose opinion definitely matters, you know you are on the right track. Last Saturday we jumped for joy when Lucia van der Post featured our Old Paper Baskets, along with some of our other lovely Chinese antiques, in How to Spend It, the glossy monthly supplement to the FT. These large paper baskets are hand-made in China from recycled ancient papers, bonded together and hand-painted with Chinese animal and plant motifs. They are all one of a kind, robust yet delicate-looking, and uncannily beautiful. Of course you can throw your rubbish into them if you want to … but we think they deserve better than that!

Monday 19th November
A huge thank you to Lucia Van Der Post for including me in her column this weekend in How To Spend It. It was a wonderful piece that talked about truly unique and bespoke presents that will be enjoyed for years to come.
When I create commissioned pieces, such as the one I designed for Annoushka Ducas that was discussed, I love the thought that future generations will sit around gossiping and playing on a game that describes their great great grandfathers life.
Thank you also to Annoushka for giving permission for photos of this commission to be published.
