Venetian School, c. 1750
A Regatta on the Grand Canal with a view of the Dogana and Santa Maria delle Salute
oil on canvas
The present view shows the Grand Canal with Santa Maria della Salute and the Dogana on the far quay; the foreground is bustling with the excitement of the Regatta taking place along the canal. The identity of the artist of this view is yet to be determined. Dario Succi had suggested a tentative attribution to Charles Léopold Grevenbroeck (active 1670-1730) when the painting last appeared on the market. The scene depicted recalls Luca Carlevarijs' grand regatta views (examples at The J. Paul Getty, Los Angeles and Frederiksburg).

Eyewitness Views: Making History in Eighteenth-Century Europe is at the Cleveland Museum of Art through May 20, 2018.
Eyewitness Views: Making History in Eighteenth-Century Europe is the first exhibition to exclusively examine view paintings—more or less faithful depictions of a given locale—that also depict contemporary historical events. Throughout the 1700s, rulers, princes, ambassadors, and religious dignitaries commissioned these extraordinary works to commemorate key moments in their personal and professional lives. Dramatically staged for the enjoyment of a wide range of spectators, and typically involving sumptuous costumes and elaborate temporary decorations, these events give us insight into the rituals and rare occurrences of a spectacular bygone era.

No. 435.

Everyone this is way out of our usual era but I am too excited not to share because I encountered (late) this incredible far-too-short fic: The Heart Plays On by Kaleran, a valvert reincarnation story with its origins in late 17th century Italy—and so I was, yknow, absolutely not researching clothing references from that era when I came upon Venetian study of a man in a yellow coat. Come on you know Valjean needs a yellow coat in every era! and okay this one is sliiiiiightly late but! it’s Italian! and maybe it lives on to become THE yellow coat!
