(Fingers crossed this comes at a time of peace & love across the galaxy surrounding Planet Britpop.) Anyone here a Trainspotting fan? I've got some fun little propaganda bits that are, er... relevant to a Brit in the competition... who can say which one...
From the Cannes premiere, 1996: "Once inside, my first encounter was Damon Albarn, who appeared to be wearing lipgloss. He was more than happy to stop and chat about himself before we got onto more interesting topics, such as brown, manila, and windowed envelopes. Nearby Irvine Welsh was hugging and kissing anything that crossed his path: people, plants, pillars…"
"The author (Irvine Welsh) has been kissing the popstar (Damon Albarn) all night. (...) Lips, tongues, throats, saliva, the works. lt is only around midnight, but as the party have been drinking since two o'clock in the afternoon, everyone is — as they say round these parts — gubbed, blootered, plastered and pished. The author has the popstar in a bearhug. Another one, there is much slurring and slavering. "I love you, man. Mucho respect, like..."
Big fan of this photo of the two of them:
The story goes that Irvine was singing Oasis to him, but that's almost too cheeky a caption to believe. They are good mates though, they've done interviews together and when Damon flips the switch between being a dumb bitch and a booktube girly he includes Trainspotting in his favourites.
That photo is everything 😭 Oh, to be a British celebrity in the 90s...

Hell Hath No Fury - Chapter 2
Chapter 2: Pescador de Hombres
"Good morning, Lieutenant," John said as Rita walked through the door and stopped at his desk for her messages.
"Good morning, John," Rita Ortiz answered as John handed her three slips of paper.
John Irvin had a habit of organizing her messages so that the topmost was the most important, so she was not surprised when she saw Chief of D's office and the familiar phone number written in John's beautiful cursive handwriting.
"One of those days, it looks like."
"No rest for the wicked, Lieutenant."
I wish I had the spare time to be wicked, she thought as she walked to her office.
She had barely reached her desk when the phone rang.
Jesus, can I at least get a cup of coffee?
She had not had time to close the door to her office, and most of the detectives working the 8 AM to 4 PM day shift had not arrived yet, so John had no trouble hearing her words.
"15th squad, Lt. Ortiz. No, I got it - like five seconds ago. You were my first call if you had given me another sixty seconds."
John heard the irritation in her voice. He leaned back in his chair to get a better view of his Lieutenant as she listened and wrote.
"OK, I'll get someone over there," she said and hung up the phone before looking out the window of her office to see her PAA sitting straight at his desk and looking straight ahead at the two detectives entering the squad room.
"Good morning, detectives," John said to Joe Slovak and Ray Quinn.
"Morning, John," each said.
"Perfect timing," Rita said as she handed a slip of paper to Detective Joe Slovak, "there was another one last night."
"Jesus, three nights in a row?" Quinn asked.
"Four," Slovak corrected him as he read the address written in the chicken scrawl that passes for Rita's handwriting.
"Is that a three or a five?" he asked her.
Rita opened her mouth before closing it again as she took the paper from his hand and looked at what she had written.
"Three," she said as she handed it back.
"Four nights in a row," said Ray Quinn, shaking his head as he took a radio from the charging station.
Rita watched them as they headed down the stairs and out of her view. Slovak was right. Four nights in a row. A total of thirteen men with an assortment of mob connections, beaten bloody, trussed up, along with whatever they had been dealing or moving or making. All where the anonymous tip, delivered as a GPS-tagged video, said they would be.
This last tip would be just as untraceable as the other three. Not the first three, God no, this last batch was only the last batch . Precincts across the city had received gifts like this for a while now. It was because some of those gifts had been transporting kidnapped women that the NYPD had any information on the source of those gifts. The gifts themselves would not utter one word on the topic.
Thirteen bad guys off the streets should have made Rita happy, but Lt. Ortiz was not. Rita did not like vigilantes, especially the kind that came with special suits and special abilities. It was her job, and her detectives, to take these assholes off the streets, not some over-privileged dickhead with too much money, too much time, and no accountability or even the most basic concept of chain of custody.
"What the fuck am I supposed to do with this?" the ADA asked her after the second batch of gifts, "how long between when you received the tip and when your men showed up? How do we prove that it's their drugs?"
"They gave us the men, they gave us the drugs, they gave us the location. Make something out of it," she had answered, "some idiot in a yellow suit is this summer's version of Santa Clause, however much I don't like their methods."
Rita's squad was one of the best in the country. If anyone could get a suspect to roll on his employer, it was them. Plus, none of these thirteen men wanted to be back on the street and have to explain how it was that several million dollars worth of whatever had slipped through their fingers. She was sure they could follow this trail of little fish back to the bigger fish that employed them.
But how far back and how big was the head fish?

"MAJOR W. ST. PIERRE HUGHES Who Has Been Appointed Inspector of Penitentiaries in the Dominion." Kingston Daily Standard. March 8, 1913. Page 1. //// "MAJOR HUGHES MADE INSPECTOR," Kingston Daily Standard. March 8, 1913. Page 3. === Received Official Notification This Morning - Salary $4,000. ---- COL. IRVINE APPOINTED ---- Stony Mountain Official Will Come to Portsmouth Penitentiary as Warden - Sketch of Career. ---- Major W. St. Pierre Hughes received official notification this morning that he had been appointed inspector of penitentiaries in Canada at a salary of $4,000, his duties to commence immediately. The appointment which by no means comes as a surprise, is a most popular one as Major Hughes has proven himself to be one of the most efficient officials in the Portsmouth Institution where he has served for twenty years, entering in 1893 as warden's clerk and clerk of industries. In 1896 he was made chief keeper and clerk of industries, and in 1903 was made chief accountant and clerk of industries which position he has retained till the present.
Inspector Hughes will work in association with Inspector Stewart, now in charge of the local penitentiary, and his duties will carry him from one coast to the other. The new duties will, of course, neceessitate his removal of residence to Ottawa, which will be his headquarters. Major Hughes will go to the capital next week in connection with the appointment.
COL IRVINE WARDEN. Coincident with Major Hughes appointment to the inspectorship comes following despatch from St. Thomas:
"Capt. John C. Ponsford of St. Thomas, has been appointed by the Dominion Government as warden of Stoney Mountain Penitentiary, near Winnipeg, successor to Col. Irvine. who has been transferred to the Wardenship of Portsmouth Penitentiary Captain Ponsford was tax collector for St. Thomas, resigning to go into business in El Paso, Texas, where he remained for a few years. He has been identified with the 25th Regiment for many years. Captain Ponsford will leave in about a week to take up his new duties at Stoney Mountain."
NOTHING OFFICIAL. Although the officials at the penitentiary state that they have receiv- ed no official statement as to Col. Irvine's appointment it is neverthe less believed to be a fact. Col. Irvine has been well known as an able soldier and disciplinarian and for twelve years he was in charge of the North-West Mounted Police force, where he much distinguished himself.
COL. IRVINE'S CAREER Lt. Col. A. S. Irvine, youngest son of the late Lt. Col. I. G. Irvine, for many years Dominion A.D.C. to the Governor-General of Canada, born in Quebec, Dec. 7, 1887. was He was educated there, and for several years followed a mercantile career.
He was gazetted as Lieutenant in. the 3rd or "Eastern" Administrative Battalion for service at La Prairie under command of Colonel (now Lord) Wolseley in 1864. In 1866 he was raised and appointed captain of what was afterwards known as No. 1. Co. 55th, Megantic Light Infan try. He was promoted to the rank of Major in 887, serving in the Red River expedition of 1870 and upon the force in Manitoba being reduced the following year, was placed in command of the Provincial Battalion of Rifles, which remained there. He retired from service with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1875. On the formation of the North West Mount ed Police he became assistant Commissioner and was promoted to Commissionership in 1880. He assisted in the North West Rebellion, receiving a medal for bravery and retiring in 1886. He was appointed Warden of the Manitoba Penitentiary in Oct 18, 1892. In 1895 he was elected President of the Red River Expedition Association of England. Col. Irvine is unmarried.
It is understood that Lt. Col. Irvine will take up his new duties as soon as possible.

JESSE JET BROOKS AND ANNETTE SOYINTHISANE ARE BURGLARIZING HOTEL RATS: IRVINE POLICE
Jiminy Christmas, what they hell happened to the homecoming king and queen?
June 23, 2013
OK, we don't know if Jesse Jet Brooks or Annette Soyinthisane received scepters back in the day. We do know they began new reigns in Orange County Jail Sunday afternoon.
The Irvine Police Department received a call Sunday morning about a man checking car door handles in the underground parking garage of 2300 Dupont Drive. Officers arrived there about 8:15 a.m. to see a fellow in the process of committing a vehicle burglary, according to a statement from Irvine Police Lt. Julia Engen, the department spokeswoman.
As the cops closed in, the chap saw that he had been made and ran to another vehicle, hopped in and drove toward officers, states Engen, adding that one cop, fearing for his life, fired a handgun round at the driver but missed him.
The driver kept coming, wedging his vehicle between the police car and a block wall before driving out of the garage and onto Dupont Drive, where the chase for him was picked up by more Irvine officers in cars, Engen said.
A short but high-speed pursuit included the suspect vehicle being driven into opposing lanes of Jamboree Road before it pulled into an apartment community on Via Lucca and crashed into a wall just outside an underground parking lot that was secured by a gate, Engen said.
The driver got out of his ride and hoofed it over to a Via Lucca resident, saying he needed assistance because he'd just been in a traffic accident, according to Engen, who notes the resident allowed the stranger to use a phone in the unit.
Officers set up a perimeter, and a man identified as 29-year-old Brooks was arrested around 8:45 a.m. as he left the apartment.
Twenty minutes later, a taxi carrying 26-year-old Soyinthisane arrived at the apartment complex. Irvine detectives believe Brooks had called her to come pick him up, according to Engen. Soyinthisane was arrested on suspicion of falsely identifying herself to officers.
Further investigation revealed the pair had been staying together the past two days in a nearby hotel room, where “evidence of fraudulent activity and stolen property were located,” according to Engen, who noted detectives are now matching items with goods stolen from recent thefts in Orange and San Diego counties, including Irvine vehicle burglaries.
Brooks was booked into Orange County Jail Sunday afternoon on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest, evading officers and vehicle burglary. He also has a no bail assault warrant issued in San Diego County. Soyinthisane went to the women's side for the false I.D. allegation.

pls talk more about your scottish highlander regiment ocs…… they are so enchanting.. i love the officers
anon i hope you are prepared for a lot of rambling under the cut
hello and welcome to my twisted mind.... i'll try to condense the 10k google doc of lore into something passable here. BASICALLY all of these ww1 guys are part of a web of interconnecting stories that intersect and span before/during/after the war. the main group are the four rugby boys who live in Stirling, Scotland and are drawn into the war in 1916 following the military service act...
from left to right we've got connor, james, peter, and johnny! excuse my bad handwriting but here's the jist of their dynamics. they play rugby together before everything goes to shit (peter is captain, james is the star player, johnny is stupidly reckless, and connor keeps getting into fights) a group of good guys, if a bit rowdy. they join up with the 14th Service Battalion of the Argyll & Sutherlands and spend most of the war fighting on the western front!
two old sketches of johnny and peter..... i think these r from like spring 2022? anyway i could go into more detail about their interpersonal issues but it's a lot and i feel like that could b its own post... ultimately connor gets killed taking out a stormtrooper (another oc) and peter loses a leg about a week later. james contracts influenza and gets sent home but eventually recovers, leaving johnny to finish out the war by himself. their group is definitely not the same after the war, and peter & james in particular really struggle with ptsd in the following years.
AND THE OFFICERS. WOO. aka toxic old man yaoi aka Lt Kincaide and Lt Irvine. these two spend like three full decades being catty and hating each other before they end up getting together LOL it goes something like this: kincaide is from a wealthy family, irvine is not, they meet at school and end up going to the same military academy prewar. they rly hate each other from the beginning and would probably just be petty rivals HOWEVER. irvine is sneaking around somewhere he 1000% should not be and catches kincaide in a very compromising position w another man. irvine intends to tattle but kincaide blackmails irvine into keeping quiet- irvine is there solely on scholarship and kincaide has enough social clout to ruin his military career. basically if kincaide goes down he's taking irvine with him.
that sets the stage for a decades long contentious relationship- partially bc they just keep bumping into each other. irvine obessively tries to find ways to end kincaide's career and kincaide loooooves fucking with him. individually they're very competent people- kincaide is an especially beloved officer even if he is a bit of a romantic snob, and irvine is insanely effective if a bit rigid and cold. these guys got issues on top of issues but proximity eventually leads to a healthy rivalry that becomes something like friendship that becomes basically being married. by the end of the war they are staples in each others lives but they dont get together until a decade or so after it's all over... they each take some damage during the war and spend their later years taking care of each other :')
my beloved old men. they are so fucked up. mutsache4mustache <3
there is so much i could say about them individually and the deep lore but im such a horrendous writer. also this is like a quarter of all of their stuff minus about four characters. the ideal format for this story would be a 300 chapter webcomic/graphic novel but i have neither time nor skill nor attention span for such a sprawling story so it'll just be random illustrations and blurbs in the tags. and my google docs. if any of this has interested ppl i've made a rugby boy playlist and an officers playlist bc im insane. you can get the vibes of their stories a lot better.
and uh i think thats a super rough version of these guys. anon i hope you know that i love you and this ask was so delightful to get <3

The Malevolent Aloneness
Day 16: Hallucinations! A very sick army boi starts hallucinating feverishly when left alone. Tw: Hallucinations
Lieutenant Irvine stumbled from his room on the base. In his cloudy mind, he knew one thing: he was sick. Quite sick. He was usually one to work through a cold, but this time he feared he would collapse after taking two steps. The artillery officer leaned against the doorframe, still in his PT uniform that he slept in, trying to remember how to get to the infirmary. He massaged his aching temples as he finally was able to figure out a route. Down some stairs… across to Building C… down the hall… alright then.
As he stepped into the hall, everything seemed ‘wavy.’ The walls and floors appeared to be moving like they were water. Lt. Irvine struggled through the hall, trying not to collapse. His body was absolutely weak and exhausted. By the time he had made it to the stairwell, he felt as if he was about to throw up.
Suddenly, he heard a gunshot at the top of the stairs. Something he hadn’t been exposed to; he had never been deployed. So he was startled like the average man, and took a tumble down the stairs as he jumped and lost his balance.
In a ball at the bottom of the stairs, which was right near the mess hall, one of his artillery soldiers stood over him.
“Sir, are you alright?” she said as she kneeled next to her officer.
“Oh… Private… yeah I’m… just get me to the infirmary…”
“Right away, sir,” she said as she reached out and helped him up. He was unsteady and felt himself leaning on her as she assisted him. Outside… into Building C. Into the clinic.
“Master Corporal Stevens… Lt. Irvine is very sick, I had to help him here. Get him a bed?” she said as she entered. The medic she was addressing stood up from behind his desk.
“Oh, for sure! This way, Private.” He led the way to a bed, where Lt. Irvine was quickly laid.
“Man… I’m sorry… I don’t know what happened…” lamented the young officer as he looked up at the medic, “I can barely stand… I feel so weak…”
“That’s alright. I’ll get Captain Gerard over here. The medical officer. He’ll look you over and figure out how to help you,” MCpl. Stevens promised, “hang tight.” Lt. Irvine was then left there after the female soldier said a quick goodbye as well.
As he was left there, the walls and ceiling began making waves again. Everything was wavy, it was nauseating. He suddenly felt a deep fear creep into his chest. Something was watching him… he looked around for what it could be. He yelped in fear when the medic came back and said hello.
“Oh… sorry…” he said immediately, “I… never mind…”
“Oh! Oh… it’s ok,” replied MCpl. Stevens, not sure what happened, “I was just going to take your vitals. Hold this under your tongue…” Lt. Irvine did so. He waited patiently as the medic put on his stethoscope and took blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing rate. Then the thermometer beeped.
“104? No wonder you’re not doing well…” he said, “I’ll start an IV right away, you’re probably dehydrated too. Capt. Gerard will be here shortly.” Lt. Irvine closed his eyes as the medic swiftly started the IV with the wrap of a tourniquet and a brief pinch.
“If you need anything I’m here,” he reassured the Lieutenant, and with that remark he left him alone again. The fear came gradually creeping back. Everything seemed dark. People were out to hurt him. His hands moved toward the IV in his arm. He gasped and promptly ripped it out, then weakly attempted to get out of the bed, right when the medical officer walked in.
“Hey! Kiddo! What’s going on?” He said as he saw Lt. Irvine struggling to get out of bed, the blood dripping down his arm. He looked into his eyes and put his hand on the Lieutenant’s chest.
The grounding touch brought him back to reality. “I… I… I’m sorry…” he whimpered, “I… man… something weird happened.”
“It’s alright. Your fever’s high, it’s understandable you may have been hallucinating. Just close your eyes, son, you’re going to be alright. You’re safe.”
Those words seemed to be enough. Lt. Irvine closed his eyes and let the doctor take care of him. He just needed someone by his side. That was grounding enough.

Hell Hath No Fury - Chapter 1
Hell Hath No Fury
BrenPaidhi
Summary:
Leading a double life is complicated when one of those lives is a superhero, two double lives (and two superheros) even more so. Add a third (or is it a fifth) life in the form of an NYPD Lieutenant, and you understand what Trish Walker, Beth Kane and Lt. Rita Ortiz learned some time ago: Life in the big city can be hell.
Copyright © 2022
This work is rated Mature because of some explicit descriptions of sex in Chapters 16, 25, 42 and 44.
------------------------------------------
Notes:
What's in a name? That which we call a rose, blah, blah, blah. It turns out when you have to take fictional cities and translate them into real ones, names are important; at least the real names.
Metropolis is a no-brainer. The Big Apple. Gotham is a bit more problematic. It has been used to refer to NYC, but in the comics it seems to be in New Jersey. For this story, however, I prefer to place it in Chicago since The Windy City stands in for the home of The Dark Knight in the movies. Star City is Seattle (natch), but Central City is a bit more vague so I chose St. Louis for the home of S.T.A.R. labs and the residence of the fastest man on Earth. Other locations will be translated as the need arises. Anyone who has objections to my version of mapping, please suspend your disbelief for the time it takes you to read and, I hope, enjoy this version of reality.
One more note: You fill find several sections of dialogue that are not in English. Those sections are linked to their English translation. Those of you who are reading on a PC can simply hover your mouse over the section to see the translation. If you are reading from a mobile device just press and hold the link to see the translation.
I include song lyrics in several chapters. Those songs are important since they help convey what the characters are feeling, and some of them may be familiar to you. Where I could I have included links to the songs themselves, and I encourage any reader to click the link, listen, and enjoy.
Patricia Walker, Hellcat, Kyle Richmond and Nighthawk are the intellectual property of Marvel Comics.
Elizabeth Kane, Alice, Julia Pennyworth and Carmine Falcone are the intellectual property of DC Comics.
Rita Ortiz, John Irvine, Joe Slovak and Ray Quinn are the intellectual property of Steven Bochco Productions and 20th Century Fox Television
This is a work of non-commercial fan fiction and not intended for, or to be used for, commercial purpose.

Chapter 1: Don't look a gift horse...
Trish positioned the final ice pack on her right knee and wrapped it with an elastic bandage, just like she had the other two.
She lay back on her bed, inhaled deeply and slowly, eyes closed, and enjoyed the complete lack of motion for several seconds.
She did not open her eyes as she spoke.
"Alexa set a fifteen-minute timer."
"Fifteen minutes," the female voice replied, "starting now."
The bed was not the only piece of furniture in the one-room studio apartment. There was a chair, an end table, and a small desk. Trish could visualize the entire apartment and its contents without opening her eyes. It would take her less than a minute to list all the other contents of the small room. One place setting, one set of silverware, and two glasses, all bought from Goodwill, like the small table lamp, the Degas print of a dancer mounted on the wall just above her head, and the two framed photos of the couple that anyone who visited here would assume were the parents of Kathy Rambler, the woman who had signed the apartment lease, whose name was displayed through the cellophane windows on the envelopes that sat on a counter in the small kitchen.
If that hypothetical someone were to observe the woman, clad only in underwear and a tank top, who lay beneath the framed print of a woman dancing on pointe, the woman with ice packs on her right knee, left shoulder, and left wrist, and bruises on her right rib cage and shoulder, there would be no mistaking the figure of an elite dancer, unless they were to mistake it for the figure of an elite gymnast or an elite fighter. Any and all of those were true, even though it had been years since the woman lying still with her eyes closed had put on a pair of pointe shoes or taped her wrists to protect them during her sixty-second bar routine.
Trish's eyes opened at the sound of her timer expiring.
"Alexa, stop."
Trish knew she should get up, put the ice packs back in the freezer, clean her suit, and take a shower before leaving this small refuge for the slightly larger one three floors up. She should at least get up and close the window she had used as her entrance thirty minutes ago, but she lacked the will to move.
Fuck it, I might just sleep here tonight, she thought.
She had done it before when the aches and pains reached a certain point and only responded to bourbon and ibuprofen. For those occasions, she kept a dark wig and a pair of sunglasses in the apartment, just in case anyone saw her leave and wondered why Trish Walker was coming out of Kathy Rambler's apartment. She could always say that Kathy was her girlfriend, but that opened her up to invitations for both of them and excuses why Kathy could not attend.
Sorry, my fictional alter ego has a prior engagement kicking the living shit out of the New York underworld tomorrow night.
Trish's eyes settled on the goldenrod ( it's not yellow, dammit, how many fucking times do I have to tell you? ) ballistic hyper mesh formfitting suit which lay where she had dropped it on the floor. She knew the blood would easily wash off. But the sweat-soaked absorbent liner was already beginning to smell up the apartment with that combined vinegar and ammonia smell that told her she was eating more protein than her body could metabolize.
She was thirty-seven years old as of one week ago. Trish knew she couldn't keep acting like she was still in her twenties, but her body was very good at reminding her when she forgot. Her natural ability to heal much quicker than the average person, which had helped her through her dancing, gymnastics, and fighting phases, had slowed down but was still there, as were her natural physical abilities.
"You have a gift," Kay had said to her one day after class at SAB, "I have been doing this long enough that I know a star when I see one. You have a bright future ahead of you."
That was only days before 911, back when the world was different. Before Hellcat was even a thought in her mind.
"If you go down this road, you don't get to come back afterward," Hank had said a few months afterward when she had convinced him that she was committed to a future that Kay had not predicted for Trish.
"None of us get to go back. There's no back to go back to."
"That made almost no sense," he said.
"Fuck you."
Hank's smile was all the answer she needed.
Trish looked towards the kitchen, where she kept the bourbon and ibuprofen. The suit lay on the floor halfway in between.
"Dammit," she groaned as she rolled to her side and sat up.
