It´s more of a questionnaire than interview and it´s under the cut :-)
Penelope Wilton: ‘I was dyslexic. People thought I was stupid’
The actress on flower power, the Beatles and her star turn in Downton Abbey
First film I saw at the cinema
My mother used the cinema as her nanny. She had an arrangement with the usherette where she would go shopping and leave my sister and me at the cinema. When she had finished shopping she would come down the aisle and wave a white hanky — that was our sign to leave. Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot was the first film I remember seeing. Jacques Tati was such a great clown.
First time I cried at the cinema
I don’t tend to cry over films. Usually I cry in front of paintings or at concerts. I did, however, sob through the film Brief Encounter. It’s so terribly touching. I still get a lump in my throat every time I watch it.
First time I performed on a stage
My first job was at 20, as Tammy the tightrope walker in a Christmas show at the Nottingham Playhouse. Theatre is always anxious-making and it gets worse when you’re older. There have been some funny things happening while I’ve been on stage, though. One audience member heckled Ralph Richardson and me over bad language during the play West of Suez when we performed in Brighton. Another acclaimed actor, who will remain nameless, was embarrassingly drunk on the stage once, forcing me to say his lines and mine. It was madness.
First TV show I watched
We didn’t have a television for a long time while I was a child. I think we had one for the coronation but then it seemed to go. It wasn’t until I was a bit older that I became aware of television, and even now I don’t seem to have much time to watch things, mainly because I’m busy acting in plays and TV shows like Downton Abbey, which was a wonderful experience. It was a surprise to us all, including the writer Julian Fellowes, that it was so successful here and everywhere. It was particularly lovely to work with Maggie Smith because she was one of the actors I had always admired. I would be very keen to come back to the show if it were to return. I can hardly leave it now.
First book I loved
I was dyslexic as a child, at a time when dyslexia wasn’t diagnosed. You didn’t get much help — people just thought you were stupid. My dyslexia seems to have got better with age, but when I was younger I was read to by my mother and my older sister rather than reading myself. The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame was a favourite.
First album I bought
Please Please Me by the Beatles. Growing up I listened to romantic music like Dionne Warwick on the radiogram in our sitting room. Nowadays I listen to more classical music, but I still have a soft spot for the Beatles. Sadly I lost that LP when we moved houses.
First concert I attended
The 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky at the Royal Albert Hall when I was about ten. They had real cannons that went off. I only started going to concerts when I was older. My late husband, the [Roads to Freedom] actor Daniel Massey, was a great classical music fan. He taught me a lot about music, in particular jazz and Erroll Garner.
First pop-inspired fashion trends I adopted
Hotpants and thigh-length boots in bright pink suede. Once you went to drama school, you didn’t have any money and could do what you wanted looks-wise. It was all flower power then, so we would walk around with no shoes on, throwing flowers at each other. It was alternative but lovely.
First actor I admired
Michael Redgrave. I saw him give the most tremendous performance in Uncle Vanya at Chichester in 1963 when I was 17. Laurence Olivier was the Doctor. Together they were funny and heartbreaking. Redgrave was a wonderful actor and, more importantly, a wonderful man.
First moment I realised I wanted to be an actress
I went to a pantomime once and there was a whoosh and the curtain went up. There was this bright light and warm air came out. I thought, “I don’t know why I’m sitting in the dark here. I’d like to be up there.”
First famous person I met
Jonathan Miller when he came to Nottingham Playhouse to direct King Lear. I was a bit starstruck then, but meeting the royal family is the only time I get truly anxious.
First moment I realised I’d made it
Even at my age I don’t think I have. If you started, you wouldn’t be very good. So I will continue to try.

what lps do you think c!niki would be
hi anon this is a really good question. there's something wrong with me so i scrolled through gens1-3 on lpsmerch to highlight which one had the most c!niki vibes and narrowed it down to a few finalists from each gen
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
#64 has a very classic c!niki colour scheme with the cream and pink which gets an automatic inclusion from me. i like #79 but i think i'm just very attached to the spaniel molds and when i was little the spaniel lpses were always the sweet helpful ones also. i like #114 as a l'manberg era c!niki even if the mold is a kitten because those eyes look so hopeful she really doesn't know what's about to hit her
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
#515 i can't really explain. just has the vibes. and i like that its fuzzy. i know raccoons are tommy's thing but she needs little hands for baking and i liked the colours so i included #953. #521 is niki in her birthday party stream obviously she even has eyeliner
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
#1304 is another rabbit with a very c!niki colour scheme so points there. #1812 because i also have a soft spot for fox c!niki matching with c!fundy. alternatively #2409 but i think i just like to sneak some dog motif in there ('fox and the hound' yk). especially bc niki refers to herself and fundy as being treated like "little dogs" at peoples' heels before doomsday. very fun. #2141 wolf also very cute for the same reasons but i think this is where people start saying Okay kai you just made this motif up. and they're not wrong but
maybe it's time to. you get it. vote now on your phones

Digital recordings.
Too much discussion of sound today is about bits. I expect almost no one taking a hard stand either side really understands what a bit is. CD "red book" is 16 bits and 44 khz sampling rate. Oh that is so much worse than streaming, blah blah blah.
Those TELARC discs I like are CD red book, but were recorded at 20 and even 24 bits and 50 khz. Every additional bit doubles the dynamic range available. 20 bits is 4 doublings over 16. Telarc knew how to work it.
My TELARC CDs are full on audiophile quality.
See this.
Note they are talking about TELARC LPs. You can buy these new LPs. I am happy with the CDs. There are plenty of TELARC CDs on Discogs. Oh and forgive me if I link TAS as I often slag them for being out of touch with reality. But they carry a lot of weight in the biz.
It is kinda fun that CDs are now the obsolete tech. They may even make a comeback!
It has nothing to do with quality this streaming thing. I know from direct experience that high quality streams I get from Apple lossless with plenty of bits do not sound as good as my LPs of the same music, and CDs when I have them. Streaming is about convenience. It is about big music labels making lots of money with minimal capital investment. LP and CD factories are expensive to run.
High end CD players all use microchips made by people in bunny suits. Those are a commodity. The fancy high end parts (including tubes) are there to voice the sound to some personal preference.
Lots of bits are only really good for the recording and mixing process. 16 bits is plenty for playback if properly mixed and mastered. TELARCs are such.
Oh and after not much thought I ordered another TELARC CD. The 1812 overture. And yup they have real artillery. Yes that is juvenile, but this is supposed to be fun right?
Oh do not take this to mean I think less of vinyl. I still prefer it. I have several albums with both CD and LP copies. In about every case I prefer the LP rendition. Oh and some of those are originally digitally recorded.
IMPEX who make really exotic LPs for eye watering cost (like Getz / Gilberto) also make an "analog" repress of Jennifer Warnes Famous Blue Raincoat for stupid money. That was recorded in the studio digitally. My ordinary copy is a fabulous recording. Digital is only worse when done poorly.

ARTUR RODZIŃSKI & THE CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA
Tumblr media
THE COMPLETE COLUMBIA ALBUM COLLECTION

who was your first favourite artist? Legião Urbana first but my first obsession was 30 Seconds to Mars
who are your current favourite? Pink Floyd, My Chemical Romance, ELP, The Who, The Cure, David Bowie and Nick Drake
are you into musicals? which ones/why not? I love musicals, some of my favorites are The Rocky Horror Show, Sweeney Todd, Les Miserables, Natasha Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812, A Chorus Line, Tanz der Vampire and yes.... Phantom of the Opera
are there songs you consider so special you only listen to them very rarely? No, I love ruining great songs for myself, nothing is sacred
what’s your preferred way of listening to music?  (time of day, medium, situation) I prefer to listen to music in LPs at home or on my ipod when outside, any time I can, really.
what would you say is the most niche music you listen to? Maybe horror movie soundtracks?
what’s your favourite music related movie/tv show that’s not a musical? I have been listening so much to Last Night in Soho's soundtrack, but for original score let's say The Burning by Rick Wakeman.
albums or playlists? Albums
favourite albums? The Wall, Tommy, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, Clockwork Angels, Brain Salad Surgery, Bryter Layter, In the Court of the Crimson King, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, say when
is there an artist you’re trying to get into? Sparks, blame Edgar Wright
whose music do you find overhyped? I'm not gonna say it, because I am 30 years old and my music taste is twice my age, it's inevitable that I'm gonna think everything playing on the radio is garbage
what’s an underrated song? Giulia's answer influenced mine, I'm also gonna put a Camel song, Lady Fantasy
what’s a thing a bunch of songs do that you love every time? Again, Giulia is right, there is never too much synth and organ, but also when there is a very good transition of one song to another, like Brain Damage to Eclipse in Dark Side of the Moon, I get chills every time
what song is better acoustic? None, bring back the synth
what’s the worst song of all time? See my answer to the overhyped music
do you put individual songs on repeat? if so, for how long and how often? Yeah, believe it or not I did put that No Children by The Mountain Goats on repeat for a few weeks in my most desperate time
do you make your own playlists? if so, what’s your most entertaining playlist title? My two best playlists are called: "Apocalyptic Pandemic Dance Party" and "Songs for Pirates and Sailors"
headphones or earbuds? WIRED earbuds
do you always sing the lead vocal or do you harmonize sometimes? if you harmonize, do you ever invent your own harmony? I almost always harmonize, but inventing my own harmonies, which is to say the wrong ones, because I know nothing about music
a musical confession: What can I possibly say that is more damning that I listened to No Children on repeat for weeks?
Tag, but don't feel like you have to: @alicedraws-kostyalevin @alfredsnightmare @enjolris

Pan-Amerikan Native Front — Little Turtle’s War (Self-released)
Tumblr media
Little Turtle's War by Pan-Amerikan Native Front
The names for things matter, and frequently what you call a historical event really matters. The decade-long conflict, from 1784 to -95, between the nascent social formation calling itself the United States and a confederacy of Native American tribal nations (Miami, Council of Three Fires, Shawnee, Lenape, Wyandot and others) has a number of names: the Ohio War and the Northwest Indian War are prominent in traditional histories (all of them authored by white folks). Those phrases take some things for granted: the existence of a place called Ohio, a kind of person labeled “Indian.” Another name for the conflict gives this new LP by Pan-Amerikan Native Front its title: Little Turtle’s War. Using that name foregrounds the role of Little Turtle, a Sagamore (or chief) of the Miami Nation who led the Western Confederacy of Native Americans through a series of battles with US military under the command of General Josiah Harmar in October of 1790. With Little Turtle’s leadership, the Confederacy decisively defeated Harmar’s forces, causing them to retreat to Fort Washington, now known as Cincinnati. Little Turtle’s War narrates those events and intervenes in the way we might understand a seldom-told event in our history. It’s also a terrific black metal record.
Pan-Amerikan Native Front is a one-man black metal project based in Chicago; Kurator of War plays all the instruments and writes all the songs. Names matter, and Kurator of War is the sort of moniker that lots of guys playing black metal gravitate toward, often for goofy shock value or for an ostensibly “ritual” significance. Kurator of War really means it: his records document Native Americans’ armed conflicts with the US. His previous LP Tecumseh’s War (2016) concerns the hostilities between Tecumseh’s Confederacy (including Shawnee, Winnebago, Kickapoo and numerous other Nations) and the US. That conflict is conventionally subsumed into the War of 1812, even though Tecumseh’s War both precedes the War of 1812 and has a trajectory at least somewhat independent of it. Like Tecumseh’s War, this new record narrates history from a Native American perspective, emphasizing Native American peoples, their wartime practices, religious beliefs and longstanding political grievances with the US.
So why black metal? Especially given the superficially nihilistic nature of the blackened subgenre that calls itself “war metal,” the choice seems fairly loaded. But Kurator of War’s sensibility is nowhere near nihilistic, and his songs are as rigorously shaped as his historical and cultural knowledge is deep. “The Battle of Wabash” begins with a sort of overture, working a crackling guitar through a slightly more melodic version of the song’s signature riff. Ambient tones, with the quality of field recordings, fade into the mix; the sound of marching feet clarifies and displaces the music. There’s a breath’s space of silence. Then a musket shot. The song comes crashing and roaring back, its riffs filled out with rough-hewn drama. When Kurator of War begins growling and howling, jackhammer drums underscore the intensity of his voice. He sings, “Blood of the invaders soak the ground / Soon the night ushers a void in sound / Michikiniqua and Weyahpiersenwah / Mark the greatest victory in history!”
Indeed, the Battle of Wabash marked Little Turtle’s most significant defeat of Harmar’s forces; and in that way, it was “the greatest victory” of a particular history. The songs communicate the intensity of that fact, the violence and the exhaustion and the wild thrill of seeing an oppressor undone. But there are numerous histories at work in Little Turtle’s War, one of which moves deep into the 19th century and its policies of population control and so-called “Indian Removal,” genocide spoken with a cynical linguistic evasion worthy of Frank Luntz. Pan-Amerikan Native Front wants us see all the violence for what it was, and for what it continues to be. The project’s driving, sometimes explosive, frequently nearly beautiful music is an effective means, an instructive tool and an aesthetically compelling end in itself.

Tumblr media
System Center Configuration Manager current branch 1810 KB4486457 available.
Issues that are fixed
First wave issues Synchronization of Office 365 updates may fail after you update to Configuration Manager current branch, version 1810. Errors messages that resemble one of the following are recorded in the WSyncMgr.log file: ProcessFileManifest() failed to process O365 file manifest. Caught exception: System.Net.WebException: An exception occurred during a WebClient request. ProcessFileManifest() failed to process O365 file manifest. Caught exception: System.UriFormatException: Invalid URI: The URI scheme is not valid. The distribution point upgrade process may fail. This causes a block of additional content distribution to that server. Errors messages that resemble the following are recorded in the distmgr.log file: Failed to copy D:\SRVAPPS\Microsoft Configuration Manager\bin\x64\ccmperf.dll to \\{server}\SMS_DP$\sms\bin\ccmperf.dll. GLE = 32 All superseded updates are removed and no are longer applicable on a client, even before expiration. This issue occurs even if the Do not expire a superseded software update until the software update is superseded for 3 months option is enabled. Performance improvements have been made to the Data Replication Service for device discovery data. The second and successive phases of a deployment start automatically after the success of the first phase, regardless of start conditions. Phased deployment deadline behavior settings are inconsistent between the Create Phased Deployment Wizard and the Phase Settings properties. When you run a Servicing Plan after you select a Product Category, the filter is not added correctly. The Cloud Management Gateway (CMG) content service is not created correctly when the CMG role is added after you update to Configuration Manager current branch, version 1810. The No deployment package option is selected after you change the properties of an Automatic Deployment Rule (ADR). After this update rollup is applied, affected ADRs can be re-created and their properties changes without any further issue. The Configuration Manager Message Processing Engine (MPE) may not always process Active Directory discovery data when optional attributes are added. Errors that resemble the following are recorded in the SMS_Message_Processing_Engine.log: ERROR: Got SQL exception when handle discovery message. Exception: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException (0x80131904): String or binary data would be truncated.~~ The Service Connection Tool (serviceconnection.exe) fails and you receive the following error message when you use the -connect parameter: ERROR: System.IO.Exception : The directory is not empty. A user without Full Administrator rights may be unable to create or edit Windows Defender ATP Policies, even when you add them to the Endpoint Protection Manager security role. The Prerequisite Installation Checker incorrectly gives the option to retry a site installation again. If a second retry is tried, the administrator must run the Configuration Manager Update Reset Tool (CMUpdateReset.exe) to resolve the issue. Processing of .bld files by the SMS_Notification_Manager component takes longer than expected. This leads to delays in processing data and a backlog of files in the \inboxes\bgb.box folder. After you update to Configuration Manager current branch, version 1810, remote SQL providers who use Microsoft SQL Server 2014 or an earlier version may not always query the database. Errors that resemble the following are recorded in the smsprov.log: *** User $' does not have permission to run DBCC TRACEON. The Software Updates Patch Downloader component retries updates, up to three times. These retries fail and return error code 404. Windows Server 2016 updates are displayed incorrectly as available when you schedule updates to a Windows Server 2019 operating system image. Searching for a user’s first or last name, or full name, returns no results from the Overview section of the Assets and Compliance node of the Configuration Manager console. This issue occurs even when full discovery data is available. Globally available release issues After you enable support for express installation files, content may not always download from Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) servers in the following scenarios: Configuration Manager client installation through Software Update Point Installing updates directly from WSUS Windows Feature on Demand (FOD) or Language Pack (LP) acquisition After you update to Configuration Manager current branch, version 1810, device enrollment can overwrite Windows telemetry collection values that were previously set by Group Policy. This issue can cause value toggling between full and basic, for example, when Group Policy is applied. Hardware inventory is updated to include information about add-ins for Office365 and standalone Office products. Desktop Analytics deployment plans show a larger device count in the Configuration Manager console than in the Desktop Analytics Portal. Configuration Manager client setup may fail over a metered (for example, cellular) network connection. This may occur even if client policy settings allow for those connections. An error message that resembles the following is recorded in the Ccmsetup.log file on the client: Client deployment cannot be fulfilled because use of metered network is not allowed. Client setup may fail because of SQL Server CE schema changes. Errors that resemble the following are recorded in the Ccmsetup-client.log on the client: MSI: Setup was unable to compile Sql CE script file %windir%\CCM\DDMCache.sqlce. The error code is 80040E14. If an application is in a partly compliant state, and the client sees that a dependency is installed but the main application is not and requires re-enforcement, available deployment causes the following issues: The application is displayed as required or past due even though the deployment is available and there is no supersedence relation. Clicking Install has no effect. Sign in to Azure services fails when you use the Create Workflow in the Azure Services Wizard, even when correct credentials are used. Configuration Manager setup may fail the prerequisite check during installation or an update of a site server. This issue occurs if the environment uses SQL Always On. The “Firewall exception for SQL Server” rule shows a status of failed, and errors messages that resemble the following are recorded, even if the correct firewall exceptions are configured: ERROR: Failed to access Firewall Policy Profile. ERROR: Failed to connect to WMI namespace on Firewall exception for SQL Server; Error; The Windows Firewall is enabled and does not have exceptions configured for SQL Server or the TCP ports that are required for intersite data replication. The alternative download server that is listed in the "Specify intranet Microsoft update service location" window is not propagated to the Group Policy settings on the client. The download of Office 365 updates, such as “Semi-annual Channel Version 1808 for x86 Build 10730.20264” or “Monthly Channel Version 1812 for x64 Build 11126.20196” may fail. No errors are logged in the Patchdownloader.log file. However, entries that resemble the following are logged in the AdminUI.log log: (SMS_PackageToContent.ContentID={content_ID},PackageID='{package_ID}') does not exist or its IsContentValid returns false. We will (re)download this content. Read the full article

*True fact: New ABBA songs coming in December!* Missed this one yesterday: On August 17, 1982 the first commercially produced compact discs were cranked out at a plant in Hanover, Germany, eventually causing vinyl record sales to plummet. (Bragging rights go to ABBA, whose “The Visitors” was lucky pressing #1.) Today CD sales have plummeted as digital music takes over. But sales of vinyl records are continuing their years-long resurgence because of their richer sound and retro snaps, crackles and pops. I still remember the first LP I owned, at the age of six---a record of classic symphonic works for kids that came sealed with a long red wooden "baton." I spent a lot of hours wildly stabbing at the air while leading my invisible orchestra in the living room---and nearly poking my family's eyes out. Needless to say, my career as a guest conductor has been spotty at best. But if you’re in the area, I’m leading the Squirrel Philharmonic in the 1812 Overture on the porch roof next Saturday. Tickets are just 10 cashews each. For an extra five, we’ll let you take shelter in our basement when the cannons start going off.

Stop thinking and listen.
I spun up several of my new LPs including "Kind of Blue" and "Truly". Really good sound in both. The KoB is a Jazz Wax Records DMM from Europe and has a quiet clean surface. It is a milestone Jazz album due to its art first and foremost. It is admittedly old, I mean 1958 is over 60 years. You cannot call it new anymore, but influential certainly. It is rather like Beethoven's 3rd Symphony, it changed things. New pressings are nice to have.
I have several DMM albums and I think it makes for a generally better pressing, if done with proper care. I have seen wholesale slagging of the method in several places, and just wonder why. If you don't like it don't buy it. You basically skip the step where you have to spray conductive paint over a lacquer to let the plating work. Spray paint!
To damage my Audiophile credibility further I also played several CDs. The sound was fine with many nice details and textures. So many high end CD players stick a tube in the line to "improve" the sound. I have 12 tubes between the CD and the speakers. Personally I think the mix and basic recording has more to do with the ultimate playback quality than if bits are involved or not.
The CDs were a couple of Santana works, "Supernatural, and Shaman". They were good sounding. There is no perfect system. I was just enjoying the tunes. That is as it should be.
I have a lot of CDs from back when it was the future. Several are TELARCs which was a good label. Pure digital of course and now gone like the dinosaurs. One I have is the "Grand Canyon Suite" with digitally recorded thunder on one track. They have warnings on the disk about overloading speakers. More a marketing thing than a threat to equipment. There also is an 1812 Overture with real canons, but I cannot find that one. I am sure I bought it back in the day.
Our Grandkids visited and of course asked for the usual pop tunes off of Apple Music. They got it, though I did try subliminal programming by playing some classical music during meals. Some of those POP tunes have really boosted Bass. No surprise for kids stereos and headphones or ear buds, but in a real system it is kinda heavy.
Hey I will play anything.

Various Classical Gold Vol 3. Overtures, Concertos & Symphonies 1976 Track Of Choice: 1812 Overture As Monty Python's Flying Circus use to say "Now for something completely different" Dipping into the records that are archived (because I haven't got space for them in the standard racks) I've picked out this compilation of classical classics. No less than four orchestras play 6 pieces. From the complete 1812 Overture by the London Philharmonic Orchestra as well as the finale of Beethoven's 9th Symphony to Bamberg Symphony Orchestra playing Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No 1 In B Flat Minor. Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by Nord Deutsch Symphony, Brandenburg Concerto No 4 by The South West German Chamber Orchestra and Mozart's Piano Concerto No 21 (Excerpt) by London Philharmonic Orchestra. All well known pieces even if you don't know them by name. They have been used from film to tv to advertising. Like I say. Sometimes a little bit of a change does you good. #BathTimeRecord #Vinyl #VinylPorn #VinylJunkie #VinylCollection #VinylRecords #Records #RecordCollection #RecordCollecter #AlbumArt #CoverArt #Analogue #OldSchool #33RPM #LP #LongPlayer #NowSpinning #NowPlaying #12Inch #TwelveInch #Wax #Albums #InstaVinyl #InstaMusic #Classical https://www.instagram.com/p/BzJAgovpR6M/?igshid=sbze4or78t63
