ITMF: Just finished ShanaStoryteller's "By Any Other Name" where resurrected WWX pretends to be a woman, and it's put me in the mood for fic where he is actually resurrected as a woman but, here's the key: he's hamstrung by the extremely patriarchal society he's in. Maybe they're obsessively in love with him and want to get rid of the competition, or maybe they hate him and want to hurt him in the worst way possible by hurting the one he loves most, or whatever. Bonus points if Wangxian assume that whoever seems to be coming after WWX is coming after him because he's the Yiling Laozu instead of because he's LWJs love, and so they make wrong assumptions and mistakes. 9. Hi mods! Can I ask for the next ITMF for some fics where WWX, JFM or even LQR are angry at Wei Changze and Cangse Sanren for not being careful enough during night hunts and leaving WWX alone? Something along the lines of why they didn't have a back up plan or why didn't they leave WY in Lotus Pier or somewhere else where he would be looked after while they were busy and risking something happening to him bc they didn't tell anyone where their child was if something happened to them. Doesn't really need to be bashing but definitely some abandonment issues and not WWX just being alright with what his parents did and wanting to do the same

Album Review: Rhiannon Giddens - You’re the One

“Way Over Yonder” is a fiddle tune with handclaps and harmonies, but it ain’t no spiritual. The penultimate track on Rhiannon Giddens’ You’re the One is instead about an illicit bar where the women are nice and the men are pretty.

That Giddens isn’t singing about the hereafter, but the here and now, on such a song isn’t the only surprise on You’re the One. The singer, multi-instrumentalist, former Carolina Chocolate Drop, opera composer and singer, author, MacArthur Genius and Pulitzer Prize winner’s fifth solo album is also her first of all-original material. Better still, it’s nearly on par with 2017’s Freedom Highway, Giddens’ high-water mark to date.

This is despite the LP’s lack of musical or lyrical cohesion as Giddens dumps her philandering man on the soulful “Too Little, Too Late, Too Bad” and the country-tinged “If You Don’t Know How Sweet it Is;” embraces her man on the playfully ribald “You Put the Sugar in My Bowl;” and rejects men writ large on the grinding funk of “Hen in the Foxhouse.”

I really don’t care how big it is as long as you keep it out of my way, Giddens sings as strings and percussion accentuate the kiss-off of the century.

She sings about America’s promise with Jason Isbell on the rollicking celebration of good that is “Yet to Be” and fronts a jazz orchestra on the torchy ballad “Who are You Dreaming Of.”

And when the album goes out on the sub-60-second “Good Ol’ Cider” and Giddens’ banjo, the listener is left to go back to the beginning to puzzle over how she makes it hang together. Several spins later, it’s clear it doesn’t matter. That she did it is the greatest surprise of all.

Q Presents: The Best of the Best 97 1998 Alternative Rock / Britpop / Big Beat

Folks, this little comp here, which was included as a freebie sampler in an early 1998 issue of British music magazine Q, really gets at something that I've been banging the drum about for years now, and it's simply that, writ large, UK music is just better than American music. And I don't know how long it's been that way, but it dates back to at least sometime in the 90s. The things that have always seemed to set us apart from each other are our relative eases of access to different types of music and the overall rigidity, or lack thereof, of our many-tentacled popular music industries. And I'm gonna simultaneously get into both of those things right now.

For one, while electronic music in the US has largely been treated as this weird and foreign sideshow, the UK has managed to fully embrace it. They had their Second Summer of Love back in 1988, which saw teenagers and twenty-somethings taken hold by the acid house phenomenon, in which large warehouses were commandeered in order to throw enormous and illegal late night raves. And outside of London, Manchester caught the bug for it especially, which then spawned an iconic scene called Madchester, with bands like The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays venturing into alternative/indie dance territory by incorporating acid house into their own respective sounds. Versatile British dance trendsetter Paul Oakenfold would co-produce the Happy Mondays' most acclaimed LP, 1990's Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches, and in addition to that, enterprising DJs were also hijacking the airwaves with pirate radio transmissions of their own too, so they could bring other underground electronic music, like jungle and breakbeat hardcore, to the masses as well.

And the prevalence of both the warehouse raves and pirate radio then seemed to engender this tradition among a significant amount of youths towards clubbing. Nightclubs would be open every night, often with some sort of theme or genre allocated for each one of those nights, and the young people would have their pick of where they wanted to go. And this time around it was all legal, except for all the drugs that you might choose to do 😅.

Now, the US, of course, has had its own clubbing history and culture too, but clubbing seems to be a far less popular activity among Americans, and you'll almost never hear our most popular radio stations showcasing the kind of electronic dance music that gets played at a club, whereas the BBC will be hip enough to air sets from some of the UK underground's greatest contemporary dance DJs.

So with nothing like a Second Summer of Love ever managing to occur in the US, despite the fact that we invented both house and techno, we still never really had a generation that electronic music successfully permeated to a comparable point of ubiquity as the UK did. And I think that's the main reason why our music isn't as good as theirs. You'll find electronic music in plenty of American pop material now, but we are so far behind what the UK has already been doing for decades. They developed their own scenes for every electronic genre under the sun and it ended up serving as this connective tissue to make the UK such a sonically vibrant and dynamic melting pot. Underworld's utterly strange techno odyssey, "Born Slippy," went to #2; drum n bass was popular enough to chart; Portishead, Massive Attack, and Tricky were all huge deals; and the big beat scene that was helmed by people like Fatboy Slim, The Chemical Brothers, and The Prodigy went simply bonkers. And the US really never had *anything* close to that, besides some of that big beat crossing over to soundtrack our futuristically-themed audiovisual media, like The Matrix, et al., and some car commercials.

And without that dimension of electronic music being able to flourish Stateside, the state of our own industry resulted in something that was a whole lot more cliquish and segregated. Little to no cross-pollination really ever occurred here and the most tangible thing we ever got out of it when it actually did happen was rap-rock and nu metal 😒. After grunge died, some of our biggest, most accessible American alt rock acts ended up being names along the lines of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Third Eye Blind, the Goo Goo Dolls, and Everclear, and over in the UK, they had Radiohead, Oasis, and Blur. And Radiohead would end up drawing inspiration from Aphex Twin and IDM, and Damon Albarn from Blur would go on to form The Gorillaz. Do you see what I mean?

So all of this is to say that while Q could produce a CD like this, comprised of fantastic music by mostly UK acts that the record-buying public over there was already familiar with, no widely read US publication would've been able to pull off the same in 1998 with a CD of mostly US acts. They might've been able to cobble together a better album with purely indie material, but then a lot of the names on that CD would've been obscure to a whole lot of folks. And while this comp from Q presents UK-made electronic music in the form of big beat from The Chemical Brothers, big beat-hip hop from The Prodigy and prolific abstract Big Apple rapper Kool Keith, and vocally soulful drum n bass from Roni Size / Reprazent, the best that the US probably could've mustered in comparison would've been something from someone like Moby, and *literally no one else.*

To be clear, America has produced plenty of great music without electronic music being popular enough to really inspire it, but the problem is really twofold: that amount of music, for the massively larger population that we have in comparison to the UK, is in nowhere near as much of an abundance, and for the great stuff that we have made, our industry, mechanisms, and apparatuses don't really do all that much in order to successfully raise its profile to a point of pervasiveness like the UK does. And I think a lack of electronic music being somewhere in the accessible ether definitely has something to do with it all.

Seeing as how this post is already long enough as it is, let me just provide one example of a song from this album that's a) very good and b) by a popular UK band that's not very well-known to Americans. I'm sure the US has had an indie group whose sound approaches that of England's Mansun before, but there's no way that what they ever made ended up amounting to anywhere near a similar amount of commercial success. Mansun's music has been available in the US, but they've only ever managed to chart once here, on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks list, with their 1996 single, "Wide Open Space," peaking at #25. And while the debut LP that that song is derived from, Attack of the Grey Lantern, didn't chart in any capacity in America, conversely, it managed to make it all the way to #1 on the UK's Albums Chart.

And the Mansun song that's on this Q comp here, "Mansun's Only Love Song," is from that same album too, and I think it's safe to say that no remotely popular American band has ever made anything quite like it. It's super catchy, melty, and silky-smoothly surging Britpop with icy synths and a distinct hip hop underbelly. And it's so good 🥰.

So, something that us music lifers always seem to be confronted with is this difficult-to-maneuver intersection between art and capital, which often leads to an axiomatic conclusion that striving for capital will always corrupt art, and sacrificing your art generates the potential to attain more capital. And while that's certainly borne out in the US to what feels like an extreme degree in more modern times, I don't feel like that conflict has ever been as dire across the pond, and this simple comp here of 15 songs that were mostly made by UK acts shows that some of those who are capable of making excellent and inventive music can also make a good chunk of change off of it as well, without having to either be a rare indie band that finds a way to strike rich, or a group of total sellouts. Whatever the UK's had in place, they've certainly managed to find that balance a whole lot more often than the US has, and one of the main reasons why they've been able to do it in the first place, in my opinion, is because the fertile ground that had been laid by acid house in the late 80s enabled electronic music, more broadly, to achieve a mix of popularity, accessibility, and inspiration that never came anywhere close to materializing in America.

I’d love to give Vinnie and penny a hug! oh and your writing is phenomenal you’ve gotten me back into watching the show!

Ok ok, so last things first, thank you thank you so much!! I'm glad you like my silly little writting, such things are really really propeling me to write for this small fandom and I'm getting proper into it. I think I might have to do a list of things I want to write out so I don't forget any ot he plots that come to me sometimes randomly sometimes not.

And I got you back into watching lps? Omg, now that's a compliment like no other! Well then, I hope you enjoy yourself ^^. Feel free to report back with anything if you want to, you know I love talking about basically anything involving lps, whether stuff that acutally happened in episodes etc or just completely made up headcanons, AUs etc.

I too want to give those two a hug, well, all of them really, but of course especially Vinnie <3. I I could I would never let him go... okay, I would, because more than wanting to hug him myself I want his friends to hug him so I could release him for that.

Now onto the questions, I'm gonna guess that you have already read it but I actually have already asked something very similar to the "how affectionate they are" question, I'll still provide a link, it's here:

However, I can still use that as an excuse to talk about them™ in the sense of that "how often they’d want cuddles" ask. It's kinda different and I'm taking advantage of that, even if this will be probably pretty short (compared to my other answers anyway >.>):

Penny/Vinnie, I'm counting those two together in the sense how often they want cuddles because for both of them the answer is "basically all the time", just, you know, Penny's rather open about it most of the time, Vinnie on the other haaaand not really. Penny is known as the affectionate one anyway and she has been doing this for years, so no one is surprised when she says she want affection. She will also often initiate it for those reasons too.

Vinnie though, well, he won't say it at all most of the time, the best you can get out of him are nonverbal cues like getting closer to you, "accidentaly" tripping and landing on someone, just standing there are staring at you with the most intense gaze ever "...What's going on?" Sunil flinched seeing Vinnie's peculiar position "Nothing, just chilling like that." "That literally does not look like chilling one bit." Honestly, he looks like he's planning to pounce on you and gouge your eyes out. One thing though! He can use his permanent coldness as an excuse if he's really desperate, he can just say that he's cold as he awkwardly tries to initiate a hug or cuddling and say that's the only reason why he's getting closer.

See why those two are so great together? She wants cuddles all the time, he wants cuddles all the time, perfect, right? That is if Penny manages to break through the tall, tall walls of tsunderesness he exhibits when it comes to physical affection, but then again I'm pretty sure she knows how it really is with him ;) everyone knows actually oop

Minka: I think she really likes cuddling but is not up for them all the time because that requires staying in one place for sometimes long time and often she's too hyper for that. Aside from that, yipee, give her cuddles :))), he's happy to initiate or join, be prepared though because she might jump on you when you least expect it

Zoe: she prefers other forms of physical affection like kisses, but that doesn't mean she never wants cuddles because she absolutely does. At the same time she might not be up for them all the time either because she's worried (I mean, rightly so) that it will mess up her hair or create wrinkles on her clothes, maybe even destroy her make up if she's not careful. Still, wants cuddles sometimes and thinks they're great

Pepper: oh she's definitely not up to admitting that she wants any sort of hugs or cuddles most of the time just like Vinnie, but at the same time she doesn't exactly crave them that super often. Will only do it if the other person initiates them and even then she will pretend that she doesn't really like it all that much (contrary to Vinnie who after initial protests and all that once cuddled will normally go quiet about it and enjoy himself)

Sunil: he mostly wants cuddles when he's scared/worried/anxious, basically feeling any sort of negative emotions because it makes him feel safe and grounds him. Besides that, he craves them sometimes too, but not quite as often as certain others, still, he won't complain one bit at being cuddled at any point. I think he likes when someone lies on top of him cause then they're like a human blanket for him and it's just nice, squishy sort of pressure

And last but not least, Russell: hmmm I think he'd want cuddles pretty often, I know we're talking about human au, but in his case I'm following the logic that he in one episode (season 4 episode :3) said that "nobody wants to hug him because of his quills" and bby was really sad about it :(. I don't know what could replace that in human au, but anyway that's how I conclude he likes cuddling. He might be kinda like Zoe sometimes in not wanting it to happen because it might wrinkle his clothes if he's supposed to be somewhere public that day, but aside from that he's definitely not opposed to them, though I think seldom he might be a bit tsundere about cuddless too

Welp, this ended up pretty long in the end, oops. Honestly I call bs on that, they all want cuddless all the time and they deserve them, let us make them all cuddle all the time with each other in a big ass pile

'Your Beautiful Self' by Land of Talk

Following 2021′s isolation-inspired Calming Night Partner, Liz Powell returns this October with her next LP, Performances, a title that addresses not just her duties as a songwriter, but the act of performance writ large: how we present ourselves to the world and the burdens of expectation, exposure and failure that comes with it.

“I needed to make a love letter to my teenage self by being more vulnerable and doing all the production myself,” she writes. “I'm performing what's in my brain but I'm tired of performing femininity for the music industry, femininity in my life, respectability, and vulnerability. I'm trying to grow out of these and break out of these roles in my life.”

The video is bookended with images of Liz looking away, as if disinterested in the gaze looking back at her. Performance is, ultimately, an act of giving. When that invariably drains you of your life force, who can we count on to give back? Dogsbody- Model/Actriz

Dance music was a prevalent force in pop music writ large throughout the course of 2022. While the indie sleeze revival more or less came and went without leaving much of an impact dance music across the board dominated 2022. The results were largely mixed, but the unifying force binding these records was the communal joy that erupted as a result of people finally being able to share these public spaces once more. The enthusiasm was palpable, and the energy undeniable. But as welcome of a shift as this was from the tepid mid-tempo bedroom pop by numbers billboard fare of the last few years I kept wondering when something truly nasty sounding might emerge from this vein. Enter Model/Actriz, a Brooklyn 4 piece with a penchant for industrial breakbeats and bad vibes. Their earliest EPs were loaded with scorched earth stompers as impenetrable as they were exhilarating, and they didn't exactly signal any impending forays into dance-punk proper. But on the band's debut LP, Dogsbody, they've successfully shed the caustic veneer of their early EPs in favor of a more full-bodied, but no less immersive experience. Dogsbody isn't an easy listen, but it's an enthralling one that never lets the urgency at its core come at the expense of the band's disarming immediacy.

Dogsbody has garnered Model/Actriz numerous comparisons to the seminal experimental aughts band Liars, which is a good place to start with them, but it does seem to sidestep the group's overt theatrical quality. To my ears, Model/Actriz stake out an idiosyncratic space that finds the sweet spot between art-damaged agitators like Liars or Special Interest, and art pop auetuers like Perfume Genius or Arca. Dogsbody is an urgent and volatile record, with shards of post-punk, noise rock, industrial, and glam rock interwoven throughout, but it isn't anywhere near as punishing of a listen as some of those tags taken together might suggest. Most of these songs are laced with propulsive grooves and anthemic hooks that are seemingly tailored for mosh pits but achieve a utility well-beyond a soundtrack to thrash to. Songs like "Mosquito " and "Amaranth" lunge for the jugular with sinister precision, their propulsion enveloping the listener like a heated blanket, while songs like "Pure Mode" and "Crossing Guard" masterfully sustain increasingly amplified tension through steady, unsettling rhythms and delicately doled out dissonance. There aren't many easy entry points on Dogsbody, but it's a deeply visceral, versatile record that keeps the listener on their toes every step of the way.

The bulk of the thematic concerns throughout Dogsbody are centered around sex. From the initial infatuation described on opener "Donkey Show" "Like when a knife is swallowed cutting water/And if it, if it hurts/I'll let him murder my/Murder my dull mind if it puts me in his eye" to the unusually uplifting finale about feeling content while being embraced by your partner "Lying on our backs, your head in my chest/Finally alone on the hillside/Silent but the sound of our breaths falling/Like petals accumulating" sex is an omnipresent, all-consuming force animating these songs. Sex is frequently portrayed as a harrowing, but insatiable compulsion not to be navigated lightly "With a body count/Higher than a mosquito", "I want to see the petals stagger onto me/See my body carried, splintering", "And then it's bleeding over/Onto my jaw/Onto my neck/Pours out of my hands", etc. But there are a few songs like the aforementioned closer, and the stunning mid-album ballad, "Divers", where the horror subsides and a disarming tenderness emerges "Braiding our arms/In the tall grass/Like laying in a palm/Held where clouds bend to breath" that helps frame the surrounding aggression. For Model/Actriz the line between agony and ecstasy in love and/or lust couldn't be any more blurry, but that doesn't make either any less worth pursuing.

No Spill Blood w/ Percolator • Whelans, March 22nd

No Spill Blood, the lauded Dublin luminaries responsible for one of the most proficient meldings of metal adjacent music and synthesiser intensity I’ve yet heard, have returned after some eight years with the impressive, oppressive ‘Eye of Night’, ten tracks spread over forty minutes of undulating heft.

Dublin krautrock shoegazers Percolator were warming up, and a band I had not yet had the pleasure of hearing. Their performance was exploratory and refreshing, an unexpected start to an excellent evening. Beautiful atonality, and an ethereal female vocal floating over arrhythmic pulsing bass and jagged, metallic guitar chords betrayed a definite SWANS influence. Their LP, ‘Sestra’ is recommended if you’re interested in groups like, NEU, Devo, My Bloody Valentine or even some later stage Einstürzende Neubaten.

A short breather. A trip to the bar. Then the band I came to see, whom I’ve come to love, took to the stage.

Much has been made of No Spill Bloods debt to Goblin, John Carpenter and horror soundtracks, but less so perhaps has been said of Big Business, the once guitarless duo that became half of Melvins, or Zombi, their pioneer brethren in bringing synths to the fore in each music.

The now ancient departure of Lar Kaye, formerly of Adebisi Shank, to focus on All Tvvins may have proven an unexpected blessing afor No SPill Blood, as they recruited Ror Conalty behind the kit, a man who has wowed me with his beat prowess since the days of Puget Sound, Verona, and even on Grafton Street beating out improvised percussion on found items.

Easily one of the most talented sticksmen the country has yet produced, his singular mark on the stellar ‘Eye of Night’ cannot be understated, underpinning the dense and oppressive sound woven by Matt Hedigan and Ruadhan O’ Meara with rhythms both primordial and progressive.

The record, excellent as it is, barely does the songs justice, I came to understand as they launched into the punishing ‘Cradle Scythe’ and the blackened hardcore of ‘Anvil Crawler’, the pairing that opens the album. Backed by sublime and abstract visuals, I assume prepared by visual artist Conalty himself, the sheer weight of the material left barely a moment to breathe, nor a head unbopped.

That something this sonically dense has been conjured by a trio is as remarkable as the compositions themselves, the brutal, thoughtful ‘Ad Unguem’ and the hypnotic ritual dance of ‘Dead Satellite’ writ large upon the dark ambience of the Whelans stage.

The track ‘Eye of Night’ itself seemed like something akin to Battles, if Battles had backbone but also were haunted by unspeakable things, a rhythmic onslaught that would see Stanier himself humbled. When I say the nuance and inventiveness of the recording does not do the songs justice, I watched awestruck as all three men demonstrated astounding technicality whilst the details lost in the claustrophobic production of the album were brought to the fore.

A set dominated, obviously by songs from ‘Eye of Night’, their new record for excellent Finland based label, Svart Records, the evening saw the songs brought to fresh, fist pumping life, a beautiful marriage of flawless execution and feverishly good songcraft, with perfect sound delivered throughout. Bone shaking low end and vast, glacial soundscapes rendered in beautiful 3D, Hedigans bestial roar echoing throughout the colossal fray underpinned by seemingly impossible percussion.

If you find yourself with an opportunity to catch them live, you would be be making a grave mistake to pass it up. One of the finest heavy bands to sprout from these shores, No Spill Blood take no prisoners, pull no punches, and leave nobody behind.

Alright, well, I know what *some* of you might be thinking here:

Hey, waitaseckin! You're tryna tell me that the 48th volume of Now came out in 2001? But my copy of Volume 6 that I hold near and dear to my heart came out that same year too! How the hell could they have released more than 40 volumes of this stuff within a single year?!

Well, you silly American, they didn't. I mean, don't you know that this whole super pervasive enterprise of repackaged contemporary hits didn't actually start in the States?? Now's original home is in the UK, and its first ever volume came out in 1983. And on top of that, while each of your American installments in the main series have only consisted of either one disc or one cassette, the UK's releases have been either double-discs, double-cassettes, or double-LPs!

So that's what we have here, folks. An early 2000s double-disc Now dispatch from the UK.

Now, I know that over the past week and change I've been really singing the praises of the UK music industry writ large when comparing it to America's, but the buck is going to have to stop right here, because despite this thing having a small, eclectic handful of flat-out y2k-era bangers on it, it's still, unfortunately, pretty freaking bad. The plurality of what's on this is pure pop music, and while the tunes that were also popular in the States, like Nelly Furtado's "I'm Like a Bird" and Britney's "Stronger" are the ones that undoubtedly go the hardest, the vast majority of the rest of them are just very flat. No flair or pizzazz in the production chops; just deeply uninspired, hollow, mass-produced dreck. I don't think I've ever heard a good solo Spice Girls single before, and that streak continues with both Emma Bunton's "What Took You So Long" and Melanie B's "Feels So Good," and even the often reliable Robbie Williams, whose singles usually satisfy with a level of charmingly catchy and classy glitz, sounds like lame Christian megachurch pop-rock here, with "Let Love Be Your Energy." Ugh!

But what always seems to make these UK versions of Now ultimately still worth a listen is the electronic music, which is something that the US versions didn't dabble in too much in the early years, besides a couple Fatboy Slim jams here and there. I got pretty deep into the nature of the UK music industry in a post last week, but to sum it up quickly here, the UK embraced electronic and dance music in the late 80s with the Second Summer of Love, which made acid house wildly popular, and ever since then the country has been far more willing to embrace many forms of electronic music, while the US simply hasn't.

So that's why there are a whole lot more dance tunes on the UK comps than the US ones, and even though they can be quite cheesy too, like Dario G's pop-trance defilement of The Cranberries' "Dreams" 😒, you're still bound to run into at least one very good song that Americans don't know anything about; and that song in this particular volume is a piece of house from Italy's Planet Funk called "Chase the Sun." As far as I can tell, Planet Funk have never charted in the US in any capacity before, but this debut single of theirs ended up proving immensely popular across the pond, netting itself a top-five spot on the UK singles chart in 2001. With a melody taken from an Ennio Morricone tune and vocals provided by Finland's Auli Kokko, this very sleek and well-layered gem really makes for a beautifully warm and nocturnal kinda vibe 😌.

But other than that, there's really not too much else here that Americans who had their radios locked onto their favorite commercial hit radio stations and their TVs tuned to MTV wouldn't know about. Usually when I sift through these UK versions of Now, I end up finding a lot more goodies that failed to make it Stateside, but nothing else on these two discs here really feels worth writing about. I still prefer the UK version of this series overall, of course, because the electronic music naturally makes it far more eclectic than the US version, but that eclecticism doesn't always translate into a better release; and such is the case here 😔.
