I understand why every companion decides to travel with the Doctor on a whim because I, too, if faced with the option to pay rent in London or the option to live in a police box rent-free, would choose the second one.
#this joke has probably been made a thousand times#doctor who#doctor who shitpost#the doctor#this is mostly about nuwho. back in the unit days jo grant would simply face aliens on a daily basis and then go home at the end of the day#rose tyler#martha jones#donna noble#amy pond#rory williams#after that they slowed down slightly. which is weird because rent did not get lower in the uk

How to Keep Your Outboard Lower Unit in a Safe Condition
Outboard motors are one of the most popular types of engine in use today. They provide power to a variety of watercraft, from boats and motorcycles to snowmobiles and ATVs. If you own an outboard lower unit, it’s important to keep it in good condition. This is especially true if you plan on using it regularly. Here are a few tips to help you do just that.
How to Lube an Outboard Lower Unit
There are a few key things you can do to keep your outboard lower unit in good condition and safe to operate. One important step is to keep the unit clean. Use a mild soap and water solution to remove any dirt or debris. If the unit becomes encrusted with built-up debris, take it to a mechanic for cleaning. You should also lubricate the moving parts of the lower unit every two weeks or as needed. Use a light oil that will not damage the surfaces. Make sure the lube is applied evenly throughout the unit. Finally, be sure to tighten all fasteners and adjust screws as necessary. This will help maintain system stability and prevent damage.
How to Change the Oil in an Outboard Lower Unit
If your outboard lower unit is nearing the end of its life, or if you simply want to change the oil, the process is relatively easy. Here are six steps: Remove the cover panel. There are several bolts that hold it in place; remove them all. Disable the oil pickup tube by unscrewing it from the pump body. Do not lose this piece! Remove the oil filter and drain off any old oil into a container. Replace the filter and reattach it to the pump body with screws. Pour in fresh oil until it comes up just to the top of the filter screen. Make sure there is no excess! Replace the cover panel and reattach all bolts. Be sure to reinstall the pickup tube before tightening down the bolts! Start up your engine and check for leaks (the best way to do this is to pour a little bit of water into each cylinder). If there are no leaks, you’re ready to go! If there are leaks, continue with Step 6 below...
How to Clean an Outboard Lower Unit
If you own an outboard lower unit, it’s important to keep it in a safe condition. Here are some tips on how to clean it: Before cleaning your outboard lower unit, be sure to disconnect all of the wires and connectors. This will help prevent any injuries if something falls off while you are working. Start by cleaning the areas that tend to accumulate debris the most. These include the propeller shaft, crankshaft, and engine cover. Use a cleaner designed specifically for engines and parts, or use a mild soap and water solution. Make sure to clean the surrounding area where the cleaner is being used, as this can also be contaminated with oil and grease. wipe down surfaces with a dry cloth afterwards. If there is any visible dirt or debris on the rotating components, use a carburetor cleaner designed specifically for this type of engine before proceeding to step 5. Carburetor cleaners are usually very effective at getting rid of built-up dirt and grime without damaging the carburetor or other delicate parts. Finally, use a degreaser or wax remover on stubborn messes if needed. Be careful not to over-clean the unit or you could damage it prematurely
How to Check an Outboard Lower Unit’s Battery
If your outboard engine is not starting, the first thing to check is the battery. A dead battery will cause the engine to not start. The next step would be to determine whether or not there is something preventing the engine from turning over, such as a seized flywheel. If the problem turns out to be with the battery, it is important to replace it as soon as possible in order to keep your boat safe and prevent any further issues. To check an sei lower units battery, follow these steps: Disconnect the negative cable from the battery using a wrench. Remove the cover on the engine compartment and remove any debris that may have collected inside of it. Check the acidity level of the battery by touching one end of a metal object (like a screwdriver) to one of the plates and watching how quickly it rusts. If there are no signs of corrosion, then the acidity level is acceptable and you can replace the battery without further testing. If corrosion has already set in, then replace the battery before proceeding any further. Clean all connections with rubbing alcohol and re-connect everything using a new wrench. Put everything back together in reverse order and test your outboard engine by starting it up.
How to Test an Outboard Lower Unit’s Operation
If you detect an issue with your outboard lower unit, the first thing to do is to safe-guard yourself and any bystanders. If the issue is minor, you can try to fix it yourself. If the issue is more serious, or if it’s not possible or safe to fix it yourself, you’ll need to take your outboard lower unit to a professional. Before taking your mercury lower unit to a professional: Make sure the engine is off and the battery disconnected. Disconnect all cables from the outboard lower unit. Check for loose connections at plug-in points (fuses, connectors, terminals). Tighten any that need tightening, then reconnect all cables. Make sure all hoses are connected and in good condition—replace them as needed. Check for fuel leaks, especially at seams where hoses join together (around fuel tanks, carburetors). Repair any leaks found; be especially careful around gas lines and valves (where they enter and exit the engine). Inspect propellers for damage or excessive wear; replace them if necessary. Inspect gearboxes for proper oil pressure (measured with a gauge), excessive wear or noise in gear transmissions, and properly timed gear adjustments (using a timing light).
Conclusion
A lower unit on an outboard boat can be a very dangerous and expensive piece of equipment, so it is important to take steps to keep it in good condition. Here are some tips for keeping your lower unit safe and operable: 1. Keep the unit clean and free of debris. Dirty parts will not function as well, and could cause serious damage. 2. Regularly check all bolts and screws for tightness or corrosion. Over time these parts can loosen, leading to loss of functionality or even structural failure. 3. Keep electrical cables secured so they do not become entangled in moving parts (e.g., propellers). This can lead to damaged cables or outright fire if sparks fly during operation. 4. Store the unit safely when not in use; never leave it perched on the dock or tethered to a buoy without protection from the elements or other boats nearby

The choice to put Una Chin-Reily on a Starfleet recruitment poster in the late 2370s seems a nod to the extraordinary person she is and her exemplary service, but Boimler’s enthusiasm for her as a personal hero cannot mask the fact of what Starfleet execs are really doing here: while it is Starfleet tradition to honour esteemed personnel from its centuries of history, we have to look at the poster as a product of its time: it seems clear that, shortly after the devastating death toll and the rapid militarisation of the Dominion War, putting a prominent figure of the Great Exploration Age - and notedly someone who had not served in the Klingon War - as the poster person for Starfleet is an indictment that contemporary young people of the Federation are not drawn to the service as it is in their time anymore.
Critically, Starfleet has to use somebody from a 120 years ago, a timeframe that would lap generations of even especially long lived member species like Vulcans or Denobulans, to attract new recruits. Boimler says himself that seeing Una as a representative and her motto - “Ad astra per aspera” was: “Uh, it was a really big reason why I joined.” Clearly there is a wealth of recognisable Starfleet officers from 2370 and onwards, but their entanglement in the Dominion War, or at least in the Borg threat makes them unsuitable as role models for people like Boimler who cannot help but associate these contemporaries with the horrors of war and intergalactic conflict. Thus, the retreat to a “safe” historical narrative, with Starfleet still being about peaceful exploration reflects the growing divide between the realities of a colonised galaxy, the ongoing need of new bodies to fill the posts on all those ships and space stations and the aspirations and values of young people today. In this essay I will question whether Starfleet can keep its promise of scientific integrity in the face of growing political unrest in the UFP and ask what “Number One” herself would have thought about-
#i loved what the poster meant for una but really it IS kind of weird#like maybe if there is a series of posters#but especially picard establishes this growing resentment and whispers of plexits (planet exit) political problems in the UFP#which I KNOW are bc writers write what they see#but also...cant we not have nice things in the future. like a functioning united system of government#anyway imagine little boims or tendi seeing the news of the dominion fleet coming through the worm hole?#they should explore that. more.#star trek#snw#snw spoilers#una chin riley#number one#lower decks#brad boimler#bradward boimler#ufp#starfleet#mp#strange new worlds#star trek strange new worlds#star trek snw

#I also think american exceptionalism and their bizarre cultural one-way street isolation plays a role#i think it's different if you actually see other countries as equals and see that they have female leaders and realise that it's#not going downhill it's not solving everything it's business as usual and it's just another boring fucking politician#and this makes the gender of the candidate LESS (not saying no) issue people obsess about or feel a need to discuss#(e.g. people laying into the appearance of female politicians? certainly misogyny. making jokes about cooking and shoes? definitely too#but I feel like that was more a 'gotta insult these fucking politicians' and gender being one of the targets when people want to do that)#but if you're the US and giant parts of the populace think they're the specialmost extra complicatedest country in this our planetworld#the fact that it works for so many other countries takes a much lower priority#because 'yeah sure a woman can govern a....'checks notes' Fineland and United Kingdom of England or Germanland'#but the US of freedom? we got a red button and what if she's on her period!!?! We are a REAL country!!'#not to mention how deeply entrenched the idea of the US as being CONSTANTLY under attack is and the president as the PROTECTOR#and that protector needs to be daddy of course#i also think the different attitude to leaders plays a role#because a part of misogyny is how much people love to HATE women - to sink their teeth into them and demonise them for every flaw#so any country that has some kind of weird worship of their leaders or sees them as some heroes or extra-class of person*#in my opinion might have a harder time to elect a woman because the moment a woman becomes a candidate#you just have to find the right flaw to go on and on about to make the population absolutely hate her or question her competency#meanwhile the general slack we cut men means they can do whatever but somehow still be compatible with that concept of leadership#(*not just the US ....though a lot of other countries with similar attitudes to their leaders are not standing out as democracies tbh)

Can't stop thinking about clocks apparently... 🥰
I found this while perusing models-resource for something to convert and thought it seemed fun. It's an alarm clock from a game called The Stretchers, which seems like a paramedic version of Overcooked.
This will function as an alarm clock in most ways, except your Sims can't break it as I was too lazy to model a broken state. They can still try, though! Speaking of model, this thing has 3,300 polys. That is very high for an object of this size. I didn't check until I was far enough along that I didn't want to throw it out. :( The texture sizes are really small, though!
Found in Small Electronics with the other alarm clocks and costs §70 which is quite a bit higher than the one I cloned it from, but I figured it's overpriced like any other novelty item. And it is unbreakable.
Download: SFS
Thanks to @gummilutt for helping me with BHAVs and thanks to Centrixe for extracting the resources!
#sims 2#s2cc#custom: objects#misc to ts2#for no reason at all i utilized the unit circle to map the glass perfectly............#you will not find a better mapped circle anywhere#maybe could've utilized that to lower the poly count of the fucking clock face

Summer Alt Sharena!
She's a colorless unit and the beach ball is colored for the weapons triangle. Her necklace as the Askran symbol on it and then in her hair, towards the top, is a headpiece with a flower but also horns like Askr has.
#fe heroes#sharena#my dottr whomst i love dearly and a tribute to askr because i love him and RIP to cow dad#i really like how some of the summer units have a cloak or their coat (wobin) over the shoulder#but i thought that would be too bulky for Sharena so i gave her a little skirt on the lower half of the suit for some flair

"Saturdays by Twin Shadow (feat. HAIM)" is how I've mentally started every post I've made here on a Saturday for the past however many years that song's been out.
I decided I needed bath bombs so I set out to do that and only realized my error when I saw the traffic control person as soon as I turned into the mall. On the Saturday before Christmas. lol
My upstairs neighbor moved out a month ago so I no longer hear about their sex life through my ceiling. My next door neighbor moved out last week so I no longer have to wear my active noise cancelling earplugs to muffle their snoring. It’s quieter around here, but the hot water takes longer to find my tap in the morning.
I deleted a whole chapter about that computer case. You’re welcome.
Never did end up doing Christmas cards this year. I’ve got mixed feelings about that.
I want to do a bunch of dumb end of year data analysis things, but I have to pull a bunch of data to do it, and that’ll take me like a dozen minutes, and that's like a dozen minutes that I could spend not doing that thing. You see my dilemma. Stay tuned, I guess?
I’m the only one on my team not scheduled off on Monday and I think Tuesday next week (and, actually, most of the next 2 weeks). It’s easy enough to keep Teams active and my work email open while I tinker on side quests.
The checkout person at LUSH is always like “oh, are these a gift?” as I unload 9 bath bombs from my basket, as if they don't get many solo middle aged dudes stocking up on bath bombs on Saturday afternoons.
Turns out I miscounted and have 1 too many bath bombs so I’m taking a bath about it.
#that first line was going to be the whole post 🤷♂️#I intentionally don’t schedule these 2 weeks off so that I can provide coverage while folks spend time doing family stuff#the property management company lowered the asking rent by $150/mo on the longest-vacant units and they're still not finding any takers#that dude next door S N O R E D so freaking loud#like me wearing regular ear plugs NEXT DOOR weren't enough!!#this week i learned about sleeper computers and that generic family computers from like 25 years ago are going for $200+ on ebay#i do enjoy pulling data from web apis so maybe i'll do that next week instead of whatever i should be doing for work#unrelated: i hate when the definition of a word is a different form of the word#like indulgence is the act of indulging and indulging is the past participle of indulge and i have to look up 3 words to confirm what i kno#you're a computer just figure out what i want and tell me the answer!

I've alluded to the concept a number of times, but here's my redesign for OLC Belle the Sleeping Car wildly roleswapped into a Momma/Poppa figure for Electra, as Belle the GG1. You could probably give her a better name, but Belle is passable enough since all locomotives in the US have bells, I mainly kept it to preserve the flow of her song (see below cut for her version!). Based on their status and appearance in their absolute final running days in 1984. They may look glossy and pretty (if a WILD time warp) but they were on their absolute last gasp physically at this point after running for nearly 50 years, due to a lack of suitable replacement. Her dress follows a similar logic to Greaseball's outfit in that it represents the streamlined cowl, which is why she's less mechanical than most.
Personality-wise, she's also oooooold and based on Ella Fitzgerald, even more heavily than OLC Belle since she's fits perfectly with the time/place/personality of the GG1s. Both started in the mid-30s in New York City, and were noted for being "effortless" and almost unparalleled in their field. I tend to imagine her playing more on the "cute, humble, and improvisational" side of Ella, entering the big race just to have one last good run before she retires, and forgetting lyrics and making up something that sounds natural. In my mind she wins because the tracks are rough and winding, which she's far more used to that the other Nationals, with how decrepit parts of her Northeast Corridor were in the 80s and still are now- experience is a quality that counts for a lot!
She toes the line between OC and AU since she's such a twist on the original but stays largely true to her general concept. I'll call her more of an AU and say anyone is free to use this interpretation if they want, I'm not possessive of it at all.
Realistically she'd be dead as a doornail after 1984 (GG1s will just never run in preservation, they were in such bad shape and would need so much work to function on modern systems you may as well build a new replica). But make a cheeky joke about Controls' mom "sticking the old shell on a new body and not telling the kid" and she can come back. I like to think she'd have a flirty, playful rivalry with Momma/Poppa, she'd make Light At The End Of The Tunnel a duet about how steam is great.... for power plants! The Pennsylvania Railroad just stopped getting more steam engines when it electrified lines vs axing them so she wouldn't have any historical antagonism with them.
Here's my rewrite of Belle's Song largely following the original format, but now about the real history of the GG1s
Speed and youth ain't everything
Experience is a quality that counts for a lot
The sad thing 'bout experience is
By the time you've got it
It's usually all you've got...
I'm Belle, Belle, Belle, the GG1
Had my fifty years of fun
My frame is cracked, I’m almost done
Though in my heart, I long to run
I hauled the folks, I hauled the freight
I made good time, no need to wait
Just couple up and ride with me
I’d get you where you want to be
Once I was the hope for the future, wires run from coast to coast
Service every hour, to everywhere, hauling the post!
Now it’s just tragic…
The war then came, it all fell down
Restriction made the new tech drown
Let autos win, pave over it all
Watched the railroads slowly fall
Still I was a real mainliner, they struggled to replace me
Ran commuter trains into the ground
Down by the sea…. At least it was scenic
Oh, Belle, Belle, Belle, the GG-LOST
I’m worn down, yet I’m still boss
I may not be first class, but I'm not yet worst class
I can still take you when the night is dark
I’m withered, but I ain’t lost my spark
#starlight express#stex#stex au#belle the sleeping car#well... a heavily reimagined roleswap of her#my art#and YES that song is a heavily abridged if pretty accurate summary of their irl history#honestly i think giving canon momma a variant of belles song in place of the blues would improve her a lot#it’s such a nothingburger song vs one that gives a lot of backstory. I don’t hate it musically like i am me but it just means NOTHING#also “ungodly old electric engine/multi unit” is a painfully underused thing in train media for how it’s fairly common irl#a notable number last for 50-60 years and you’ll have museum pieces just casual running commuter/lower end trains#“oh an excursion…. wait a minute this station is FULL of them those are just the regular cheaper trains in Sweden and France!”

One thing that's bugged me a bit about a lot of discourse I've seen following the assassination of the United Healthcare CEO is how people talk about coverage denials, step therapies, etc. like they were personal failings of UHC, as though the solution is "United Healthcare should be more benevolent" instead of "healthcare should not depend on corporate benevolence". Like yes, UHC denies more claims than most insurers, and that is terrible and people who choose to work for them should be ashamed of this, but also we should all want to live in a world where if you have an expensive-to-treat medical situation you aren't relying on a for-profit corporation agreeing to pay tens of thousands of dollars for it.
#socialized healthcare is the obvious solution#but even just moving away from employer-sponsored insurance would help a lot#if Americans had more freedom to choose their insurer then 'denies more claims than anyone else' would drive people away#and also lowering medical costs and training more doctors and breaking up pharma monopolies etc etc#my point is just that 'United do better' is not terribly likely and is overlooking a lot of things we could actually vote for
