Oh, this is a bad anime...

Not mentioning it specifically, because if people are liking it, they're liking it. It's not, like, openly offensive or anything, and it probably has a fairly small audience anyway, so why ruin their fun.

It's an Attack on Titan ripoff, at least partially by the aesthetics and some of the scenes I just watched, mixed with fantasy bullshit. A stat box just popped up next to a new character's head, so it seems there's a videogame thing going on as well. Based on a series of light novels, apparently.

The fact that it's based on a light novel makes me want to give it a bit of slack, actually. If an inexperienced team is trying to translate something from a text medium to a visual medium, it makes a little more sense that everything is, um, stiff. And uninspired.

There was a Lackadaisy comic from way, way back (found it) about drawing character expressions that included a criticism of certain art styles basically stapling emojis to character's faces in place of using their features to express emotion. This is the animation equivalent of that. The setting is essentially a shoebox where the camera is basically always at eye level, the lighting is always at an even, flat level of illumination, and the characters are neutrally posed cut-outs stuck to popsicle sticks moving through the scene.

On the other hand, at least some animators got some work? I know that TV animation runs on extremely tight schedules and very little money, so I imagine that can't have helped the overall quality either.
