Day 6 & 7 of the @spoonie_village #loveyourselfmore2019 challenge and wow what a week! This loving yourself stuff is hard, mainly because we are all carrying a metric fuck-ton if baggage that weighs us down and tells us we are not worthy of our own love. As a therapist I never believed in the bullshit view that you had to love yourself before you could love another. Rather I preferred to talk about being open to loving yourself, caring for yourself, nurturing yourself. You can definitely love others if you don't do these things but why would you give to other people what you can't show yourself? I know I'm still not at a point where I hand on heart 100% love myself but I am in a place now where I regularly show myself love. And what I have learnt from loving myself more is the more that I do love myself, the more able I am to love those who I hold close. Shoelace Pose 💗 Speaking of.... I had 99 problems but tying my shoes with a heavy breath isn’t one of them anymore. 💙 The scar tissue I have from beating myself up is now being projected as wisdom since I have spent the last year loving myself, licking my wounds and no longer being stunted by my growth because I didn’t want to leave my comfort zone. ❤️ We all know what we are ‘good’ at and ‘not good’ at and it was solely my responsibility to work on me. I had to succumb to the realization that I was the only one that could do this and that no one else could do it for me. I could find accountability partners and cheerleaders but ultimately it was ON ME! 💛 Things I’m still good at: Being a morning person. Eating the right foods. Proofreading. Cooking. Laughing. Planning. Sharing my love for healthy things. Taking time for myself. Organizing. Crying. Letting things go. Reading. Being more present. Being a beginner. Allowing myself to be more vulnerable. Never being late. (Pet peeve) 🖤 Things I’m still not good at: Heights. June bugs. Elevators. Math. Trusting. Coordination. Keeping surprises a surprise. Breaking down my walls. Scary situations. Clutter. Using knives without cutting myself. Flying on a plane smaller than a 757. Winning anything I enter myself in. When my kids are upset. 💚 I’m working on some of these things. This year so far has been very interesting. My sister and I have bee commited to living from the heart, doing what we love, and helping people. Reiki has been a major tool in our own personal journey but reiki is just one of many tools that can be utilized to help heal and grow. There are things you can do now to start changing your life for the better. By simply paying attention to how you speak to yourself can change everything. The way you speak to yourself matters. The way you feel matters. You matter. - Take time each day to recognize how amazing you are. Tell yourself you are awesome. Tell yourself that you are beautiful. Tell yourself that you are enough. Do this everyday and you will start to recognize more to be grateful for in you and your life. The fab @Spoonie_Village are re-running there brilliant #loveyourselfmore2019 challenge this week and I have decided to take part. Today's prompt was "My best qualities are..." and I have to admit it was bloody hard to decide. It felt egotistical to say I am great at this. It felt big-headed and obnoxious to shout out my top qualities. As I struggle throughout the day working on a post about my journey to diagnosis {link in bio} I pondered two things: 1) What were my best qualities 2) Why was I struggling so hard to name them I realised as I worked that it was tied up in my own view of my self-worth, am I worthy enough, good enough to have qualities I can shout out about. Self-worth is defined by Merriam-Webster as “a feeling that you are a good person who deserves to be treated with respect”. I try to be good and worry that I am failing constantly and a lot of that is tied up in the mass of confusion my chronic illness causes me. For example I try to never stay in bed, know matter how high a pain day, or how bad my fatigue is. I try to at least get out of bed and down the stairs to the sofa as I see myself as less worthy if I have a bed-day. It's a bullshit narrative that I am working on with my counsellor, but on the rare occasions I do have a bed day, my value of myself and my view of my self-worth plummets. So back to what are my best qualities, well as I wrote my post I realised that determination definitely ranked pretty highly and then I froze. I couldn't think of anything every word that entered my brain was a synonym for determination. I asked my husband what he thought they were and as he said the words caring, emphatic, funny and also determined I knew them to be true. I wish I hadn't needed him to voice what my best qualities are but I am not going to feel any less worthy because I needed him to. My best qualities are... “I have everything I already need inside of me.” - My favorite mantra at the moment! As a wife, mom, friend and woman who ended up at the intersection of overweight and under healthy for me, I had to tell myself to put aside all the things that I was doing for everyone and everything else ... but me! At that intersection, it became a personal virtue for me to take care of myself the best way I know how. Which is I never stop teaching myself about nutrition and how to be healthy. I want to continue to educate me on what I need to be doing in an effort to be running on all 8 cylinders for when and where I’m needed or wanted. It’s also important for ME to ‘just do MY best’ and ‘to try new things’ that enable me to BE THE BEST VERSION of myself day in and day out.
