282: Entourage Music and Theatre Ensemble // Ceremony of Dreams: Studio Sessions & Outtakes 1972–1977
Tumblr media
Ceremony of Dreams: Studio Sessions & Outtakes 1972–1977 Entourage Music and Theatre Ensemble 2018, Tompkins Square (Bandcamp)
Still wildly underknown given the transporting beauty of their compositions, there is a world next door to this one where Baltimore’s Entourage Music and Theatre Ensemble is as popular a soundtrack for meditation and study as Steve Reich or Philip Glass are in our own. Their music lies somewhere between modern chamber music and progressive folk, with a dash of jazz, and it was often used to score experimental dance and theatre productions. The band released two albums in the 1970s on Folkways before dissolving following the death of bandleader Joe Clark in 1983. Most probably their obscurity came from practicing their craft outside a major cultural centre; if anything, the 1,600 monthly listeners they command on Spotify represents wider exposure than they enjoyed in their prime.
youtube
Ceremony of Dreams, available in a three-hour digital format or an abridged ten-track vinyl, collects material that didn’t make it onto either of their Folkways records. Compared to Entourage and The Neptune Collection, these tracks are a little less playful, less overtly experimental in their production; they weren’t after all recorded specifically for release as an LP. But even in its condensed wax form, I can speak to the quality of Ceremony’s sober reveries, the lot of it grey or ghost-haloed yet coruscating, like black and white footage of waves crashing at night. Rather than a mere trove of demos, it meaningfully expands on their discography.
The Pitchfork review does a better job of namedropping comparable artists than I have the chutzpah for today (Arvo Pärt, Bert Jansch, La Monte Young, John Cale, Sandy Bull, raga like in general), but if you have a taste for open-concept acoustic music, Ceremony of Dreams is a sure shot.
(As an aside though: It's either endearing or grownworthy that the Entourage boys still have the classic doofy musician dude sense of humour that compels them to give these ethereal compositions "Lick My Lovepump"-ass names like "Sleazy Sue" and "Necrophelia.")

Robbie Proudlove Interview
Tumblr media
Robbie Proudlove is an Englishman, currently living in Toronto Canada. He writes incredibly catchy power-pop bangers, plays a mean sweeper-keeper, and hasn't missed an episode of Coronation Street since... ever? Lets see if we can find out if that is true, as we asked him a few questions leading up to his set at this year's Dreyfest.
------------------------------------------------
Austin: My sources tell me your name is Robbie Proudlove. Just hoping you can confirm this. Proudlove is your real last name? People exist that are have the last name of “Proudlove”?
Robbie: Yes, Proudlove exists because of other horny Proudlove's made babies and we're still going strong via our lovepumps.
You are from Oxfordshire England- we met when we toured with your old band Fancy Dress Party, in the UK in 2018- maybe that wasn’t your first immersive experience with Americans but if it was- did we surpass your expectations in Americanness? Were we... *provincial* enough for you? And if so, is that a good thing?
Nah you (especially Jordan) have a very English vibe I thought. As the years have gone on though, I feel like you have Americanized me with your 'hell yeah' attitudes. I'm hoping Montana will be like, 'Murica.
Your music is effectively concept music/entirely themed around the English television soap opera Coronation Street. For the folks at home that might not be familiar with Coronation Street (or Corrie, as it is affectionately known by its fans)- what the hell is it?
Coronation Street (Or 'Corrie', as you correctly state) is the longest running soap opera of all time, it's set in Manchester, UK. It started in 1960, and has over 10,000 episodes. Despite the fact it is a soap opera, it's stories have heart, and are socially representative of ordinary working class lives. They tell these stories with the care, and heart that they deserve. But, it's also fucking ridiculous, the same factory has been burnt down like, 5 times and there has been multiple serial killers.
Given your fandom/dedication to the show, upon watching it I was expecting it to be… better? At least less “soapy” than my preconceived ideas of soap operas here in the states, like General Hospital or Days of our Lives, etc. I know it’s not a bit, so I’m not even going to ask that, but I will ask this- do you *really* like Coronation Street? It’s not an ironic thing? What artistic value / merit do you think Corrie has that requires viewing?
I totally get why people think it's an ironic thing or a joke. I can honestly say though, I 100% love the show, and don't miss an episode. It's no joke. I think it's merit is it's ability to touch on really important themes that affect society, and tell the stories sensitively. It's really hard for me to explain this without talking about it, so I'm hoping the music does the talking and gets people asking questions.
Your upcoming release, which I’ve heard [insert release details here austin] absolutely rips. Is this going to be the last Corrie themed release, or are you planning on sticking with the Corrie theme indefinitely? Do you find that it makes songwriting easier, or more difficult, having restrictions around what to write? Or do you see them as guiding principles maybe, that help focus the songwriting?
This will be the last Corrie themed music I release I think. My initial plan was to write 69 songs about Corrie, as homage to the Magnetic Fields album, 69 Love Songs. When I started writing about Corrie, I was in a rut not knowing what the fuck I have to say about anything. A friend reminded me that I should write about what I know, and I know Corrie. Luckily for me, it basically writes itself. Although, it's not just a case of singing about the lore or history of Weatherfield (the fictional town of Corrie), it's about finding the universal and relatable themes within it, whilst also having a bit of an inside joke with myself. It's a show I watch because of my dad immersing me in anything Manchester related (him being from Manchester himself) and so a big part of it is me trying to honour his memory through the lenses of Coronation Street, and sharing the bits I find relevant to my own life. It's taught me a lot about songwriting, as much as I hate to say it (because I find the whole concept of songwriting so cringey). However nowadays, it feels like I haven't had a vegetable in 2 weeks, and I'm forcing out the worst poo known to mankind, which is why I feel like I should call it a day signing about it. I feel a bit of a failure for not managing to reach the magic 69 songs, but it's really made me appreciate Stephen Merritt even more.
You toured with us in the eastern seaboard in 2022 (I think? My dates are all fucked up) for a week and a half- any funny moments that come to mind that you’d want to share?
All I will say about that tour is, fuck Washington D.C. honestly, get rid of it, it's the worst place I've ever been in my life, just make it a swamp again. Oh and, god bless Ty.
You’ve recently moved to Toronto, Ontario, Canada- any initial thoughts you have on the city/folks of that fine city? How do Canadians compare to Americans, in your opinion?
I mean, it's kinda nuts and chaotic here, quite the jump from the sleepy cities of Sheffield or Oxford for me, but I'm rolling with it. There's lots of lovely people here who really go out their way to make you feel welcome, and they can really hold their own when it comes to boozing. I learnt the secret is, drinking water. They drink a lot of water here and it stops them from loosing control like us Brits. If you ordered water in a pub in the UK, the bar staff might ask if you're too drunk and need to go home, or your mates might rip into you for it. When I go home next, I'm teaching them all about water. Compared to Americans, I'm going to hold my tongue because, I don't want to cause a stir in the city I'm now living in, and I don't want to cause a stir in the city I'll be hoping to win some fans in.
What are your plans for music for the foreseeable future? The recordings are full band recordings, so I imagine you are in the process of finding a band?
Me and some friends here are gonna start a brit pop band and be the best thing since Jesus, or at least, Oasis. Other than that, I don't think the world needs more me's writing songs about anything, I just wanna rock out and kick back. If I feel the need to write a song for myself I'll do it, if I feel the need to share it I'll do it, but I'll probably go back to singing about massive tackles in the world of football.
This will be your first time in Montana, if I understand correctly. What are you expecting to find when you arrive in our beautiful state?
I'm hoping to find big hats, hot pants, and a whole lotta freedom. Apparently, you have lovely scenery as well so I wanna see that I guess but mainly, I wanna see freedom, dude. I also want to see a shit-ton of all black Dodge Rams.
Anything in particular you are excited about for this year’s fest?
I'm excited to see Billings in full festival mode, and see how it compares to other inner city festivals. I wanna see the locals doing what they love, and I'm excited to party with all me mates.
You are now the manager of the England national team, but can’t change the squad- how are you lining up for the rest of the Euros? TAA at right back? Gallagher and Rice as CDMs in a 4-5-1? Leaving Lewis Dunk at Dusseldorf International Airport?
So, at the time of writing, Luke Shaw is fit. This means the back 4 stays as is, Walker, Stones, Guehi, Shaw. The Midfield for me stays as a 4-2-3-1, with Rice and Mainoo holding, Belingham in the 10, Gordon on the left and Saka on the right. Foden can do one as far as I'm concerned. Don't care what people say, him and Bellingham clearly dont work, and Bellingham is scoring bicycle kicks to keep us in the tournament so, feels like a no brainer. Would swap Kane for Watkins or Toney though. He's had a shocker. A piece of me would love to see us play a 4-4-2 though and play Brexit football.
Fuck / Marry / Kill - Cockney accent, West Country accent (i refer to this as "The Ian Holloway accent"), Geordie accent
Fuck the Cockney, Marry Geordie, kill West Country.
Fuck / Marry / Kill - Big Star, Teenage Fanclub, The Replacements
This is really fucking tough but, obviously marry Big Star cause they're the greatest of all time, I'd fuck The Replacements and I guess I'd have to kill Teenage Fanclub but I'm not happy about it.
Fuck / Marry / Kill - Darkthrone, Emperor, Mayhem
Well I'd kill emperor cause, someone probably should kill Faust, really. I'd fuck Mayhem cause I only really like Deathcrush and a bit of the first LP, marry Darkthrone cause Fenris is like, the only wholesome guy in the black metal scene and I bet he'd be well sweet.
Fuck / Marry / Kill - Discharge, Napalm Death, GBH
Marry Discharge, Fuck GBH and kill Napalm Death. (Sorry, couldn't handle the brummy accent but they do rock)
Fuck / Marry / Kill- "North American Sports" edition- american football, baseball, NASCAR
Marry Baseball, kill American Football (Fuck that shit) and Fuck NASCAR (I'm curious)
Fuck / Marry / Kill- fish and chips, bangers and mash, chicken tikka masala
Marry bangers and mash, kill fish and chips (to quote Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys, 'too greasy') and fuck a cheeky masala.
Fuck / Marry / Kill- traditional English breakfast, sunday roast, crumpets and tea
Marry the Roast, Fuck the breakfast and kill the tea. I'd only drink tea in the office at work cause you have to brew it, meaning an extra 3 mins away from the desk. Otherwise, its actually a shit drink.

No, I'm not messing. See, I have this bullfrog & his name is Jasper McJumpster. He seemed kind of lonely, and grumpy so i thought he needed some release.. so I got him a girlfriend named Lisa Lovepump. But he won't go near her at all. You always seem so helpful to people and sweet. I thought I could ask you. Do you think I need to set the mood for them?
I think Jasper and Lisa need to have a common interest. Like get them talking about jumping and being frogs! Set them a candle-lit dinner with the fanciest bugs you can find and they’ll do the rest.
