When I type everything out as a single run-on sentence I want you to imagine me cornering you off-guard in a crowded room, my empty brown cow eyes staring straight at you and reflecting you--nopony home here, she checked out and hopped away forever ago on the toxic chemical trains and clacking cattle cars years ago--and just, for no reason, I’m here and you’re there pocketed in the corner of a crowded room, and I’m channeling my alternate history past-self who was a preacher that got kicked out of the church for delivering sermons about the impossibility of sin and just ran off to Point Sur with my harem of distractions since I could never stop blessing my congregation saying “Go forth and know that you cannot sin, in the beautiful eyes of God and in my beautiful eyes there can be no wrong or evil” which backfired on me when they started setting fires and it all went to Hell, but I’ve won out over them because the world honored my wishes when I sighed “I should like to start again,” and so I’m here with you and you’re hear with me and I’m saying some insane shit like: “Looking back on Emily’s early works it is easy to see where her later reactionary turn comes from, because, from the start, Alfred Alfer was a story about the fear of castration, I mean, the first video was literally about Alfred getting neutered and escaping into a violent fantasy where he is loved and praised for his violence and the ‘punchline’ establishes the general theme of ‘reality by despair,’ which is to say that Alfred’s clearly dissociative episode is ‘verified’ by his destruction and it is this self-destruction that establishes ‘reality,’ like ‘pinch me i might be dreaming,’ but the pinch is violent and unfair self-destruction as hope is still ripped away, but hope remains, because it is a hope to die rather than be changed by the world, and this theme remains throughout her most famous work (the Alfred’s Playhouse trilogy which cements in canon the jokes of her previous Rise of Alfred cartoon) where Alfred is possessed by the spirits of Stalin and Hitler--a false equivalency made by the authoritarians that have passed for liberals for years--in Rise of Alfred, one would be remiss not to mention the phallic imagery in both the title and the video itself, Alfred is cut loose upon the world by the absence of a Near God or little other by the orders of a Distant God or big Other (in this video played by a droning and irrelevant corporate figure that can offer nothing more than a wall without lead paint that one can lick), and this is the essence of reactionary thought, the idea of a big Other who is totally incompetent yet all powerful and somehow worth respecting and suffering for (King Henry II saying ‘will no one rid me of this troublesome priest’ or the departed Daiymo of the 47 Ronin), the reactionary sees the big Other as a master who can only set the dogs off the chain, the police chief who needs to get out of the way so McBain or Dirty Harry or Paul Kersey (especially in Death Wish III) can do what needs to be done and purge away all the filth and make the world right again (no different than Rambo--even the first movie, which for all of it’s goods part still is reactionary propaganda bullshit pushing the fascist lies about a ‘fifth column’ that was rude to poor little meow meow war criminals--or modern day fantasies about nuking all of MENA until it glows green (fantasies delivered to raucous applause at Republican presidential conventions); the reactionary is perpetually trapped in this fantasy of destroying the world and escaping into the void of space, freed of the ground where the riff-raff are so they don’t have to negotiate life with their neighbors, and this is true, yes, even of people who spout bullshit about Fully Automated Luxury Communism who only want the right to consume as much as possible free of guilt--a condition they think is inflicting upon them by the big Other--as the Champagne of Shame Socialists of the 60s), and the righting of the world for the reactionary is just that, that the world must be Righted and the reactionary must be loved for all of their violence and because of their violence, for the reactionary finds themselves ever needing new excuses as they open new fronts in their fake, phony Culture War, and that is all they need (excuses), which is why Emily is so obsessed with justifying her edgy shit based on some Trauma (which is handy excuse to do Anything, even Things that Cannot Be Excused like war or self-harm or wanting to be seen), and so here you should already be able to hear so much madness, so many plaintive cries, all aligning around the same point (the trannies in the ‘wrong’ bathroom, the refugees in the ‘wrong’ country, the people in the ‘wrong’ neighborhood, the Jewish Question, etc), and, anyway, so in Rise of Alfred, Emily’s OC directly addresses the audience and tells them that they must love him/her--the castrated bitch desperate to be let off the leash--and in Alfred’s Playhouse she/he simultaneously affirms and denies the nature of a trauma that justifies everything (one is constantly reminded of The Act of Killing where one of the mass murderers imagines how, depending on the editing of the final film, he could be either a woobie or a war criminal) as the Trauma is simultaneously a joke--’sodomized with a popsicle!’--and the alleged real event that motivates her self-mutilation as we’re expected to believe Emily is processing something, but what is she is processing, hmmmm, isn’t that the true spice,” I rail and rave against your poor ear drums as my empty, dead cow’s eyes capture your entire body and reflect it back at you and the ice cubes in my drink pop and shatter and dissolve and as my fist clenches tighter and tighter around the glass containing them and I continue: she’s processing a fear of castration, which is shown clearly in Alfred’s Playhouse where Alfred’s “sodomy” is demonstrated by the sight of his crotch covered in blood (a scene that will be repeated in The Alfred Alfer Movie) but “what is castration,” one might ask, and one can respond “it is the removal of power by the Father,” and this is how we wrap back around to our root in the nature of Emily the Reactionary who believes herself to be deprived of the power she holds by The Bolshevik Jew that has inserted itself between her and the Father and this is the cause of the big Other’s ineffectiveness, and this is also the core of the reactionary as a whole, the reactionary doesn’t want a daddy to control them, but a Master to set them off the chain because they hate the Father who has castrated them, this is the nature of the mumbling corporate manager in Rise of Alfred, but it is also the nature of Alfred herself--and now you may ask if Emily is trans and the answer is I literally couldn’t fucking care less about any question left forever unanswered on God’s Green Earth and you shouldn’t care either--but Alfred the Castrated is also the Father/Mother of Alfred the Dictator, the murderous inner-self that is immune to consequences of the onrushing future (The Alfred Alfer Movie) but not immune to the justifications of the imagined past (Alfred’s Playhouse trilogy), and therefore free to inflict whatever violence that Emily the Reactionary desires, and it is in pursuit of this freedom that the reactionaries set off in the name of New Sincerity (two things to be noted here: (1) the Death of Irony was proclaimed at the birth of the 21st century police state and the new Forever War with all of its genocidal objectives, that is to say, 9/11, and (2) the broken necked coward who complained of American Psycho that it’s author provided no easy outs for easy survival was the one who offed himself while Bateman’s father still lives) and the Talking Cure (i miss who we used to be), and at this you should see me slugging back the whole lukewarm glass in between two syllables and continuing on without pause (as if this dog still has legs on which to receive them in any case), “Emily, like Alex Jones, is so desperate for an excuse because neither of them can accept that they have to be the one that pulls the trigger, like all liars they don’t understand that they have to define reality by action, the answer to what one might do is found in the difference between the types of irony, one type is constantly desperate for excuses (such as the broken necked coward found one day) for violence, and the other irony, the true spice, is the irony that releases from excuses into violence and energy, one must seek not to know or endure but to inflict, knowing that this inflicting was always inevitable, no searching for justifications, instead the answer is to realize that there was never a chain there connecting you to the Master or the present to the past, and the Father/Mother never had the power of castration (the past, after all, is a foreign country bombed and blasted to ruins already and better forgotten), and you can just be fucked up and terrible and do whatever amuses you right now without needing an excuse, and to the extent that anyone should, one should, because that is what fascism needs, fascism needs the need for an excuse and that is the irony of fascism--where the falling angel (the superego) meets the rising ape (the id) in an ego of ultimate violence which seeks only release from both of its creations in an instinctually and totally misunderstood caricature of dialectics--which opposes its opposite irony (the irony without fascism which is the id’s violence against purpose and reason rising free of anything else to obstruct it), and if you let go of that, if you just, ya know, if you just, you just have to cut loose and go and no one can stop you until it is too late, because there’s no Jew sitting over your shoulder to justify everything in terms of opposition or support, not even The Nazarene is real, but do you understand that you’ve always been free to just go? You’re free to go. You’ve been free to go all this time. You never needed permission for this or anything else. You’ve been free to go all this time. You’re free to go. A whole day off. Logan's backstory part 1: girl?

Lauren is only four, but deep down she knows something doesn't feel right about being... Her.

Takes place in: 1997 (just after Logan's fourth birthday, Logan is four and Virgil is three, almost four. I have no idea how to write kids that age so they probably sound older lmao)

Pairings: platonic analogical

Warnings: pre-transition character, misgendering, deadnaming, transphobia, t slur

Also, just so people know, Logan's mom is named Ashley, his dad is Reginald/Ren, and his brother is Xyler. And Virgil is the prince of the neighboring kingdom to Roman and Remus' kingdom

Lauren was a good child. She was well-behaved, cheerful, and loved her family. And her family loved her.

That's why she was so scared to tell them her secret.

Lauren laid on the carpeted floor of Virgil's room with a coloring book. Her parents were good friends to King Kai and Queen Karen, and Lauren had become inseparable to their son Virgil.

But this time, she had something important to tell him.

"Vee, can you keep a big secret for me?"

Virgil paused his coloring. "Yeah, sure. What is it?"

Lauren hesitated. "I... I think I'm a boy. I don't know how, but..."

Virgil smiled. "Mommy has a friend who used to be a boy, but she's a girl now." He went back to coloring. "So what's your name now?"

Lauren thought for a second. "Logan. My name is Logan."

"Cool name, Logan! So should I call you he now?"

Logan grinned as he heard his name for the first time. "Yeah."

Ren scowled. Xyler was confused.

"My name is Logan!" Logan looked so proud of himself as he announced his new name.

"No."

Everyone looked towards Ren. "What?"

"I said, no. I will not have a tranny in my household." Ren glared at Logan. "Your name is Lauren, and you are a girl. End of story."

Logan was crushed. It felt as if he'd been stabbed through the heart.

Ashley stood up. "Honey, let him be who he wants to be." She turned to Logan. "Sweetheart, would you like me to cut your hair?"

Logan grinned again and nodded excitedly.

"Virgil, Virgil! Look!" Logan ran towards his friend. "Do I look like a boy?"

Virgil took in the sight. Logan's hair, which was usually in pigtails, had been cut short. "Yeah, you do!"

Logan bounced and flapped his hands in glee. "Mommy cut it for me!"

"What about your daddy?"

Logan stopped bouncing. "He doesn't like it. He says I was born a girl so I should stay a girl."

"That's stupid."

Logan smiled as Virgil grabbed his hand and led him to their playroom.

He knew Virgil would always be there for him, no matter what.

I’m gonna write the big fic I have planned for mtf stevie, so I decided to explore something different than what my plan is for that one

Under the cut for some very brief transphobia and a mention of self harm/vague intonations of suicide, Billy talks about his dad (nothing is graphic, but still thought I’d warn)

Billy figured he would be the talk of the damn town he stomped out the Camaro and into the school like he owned the place.

He thought everyone would stare at the vintage muscle car, thought girls would whisper behind their hands as he walked down the hall.

And as he looked across the parking lot, he got a taste of what he wanted, saw a few curious glances to his California plates.

But then a sleek black BMW pulled into the space next to his, a beautiful brunette girl getting out of the driver’s seat.

It was like a hush fell over the lot.

Everyone stared at her as she walked into the school, head held high, shoulders back.

Billy followed her into the school, watching her closely.

Her hands trembled as she opened her locker, carefully placing textbooks inside.

He wanted to know what her deal was.

He leaned against her locker.

“You new here, too?” She looked over at him, smiling weakly.

“In a way.” He held out his hand.

“Billy Hargrove.”

“Stevie Harrington.” He took her hand in his, made sure to smirk just so.

“You think you could help me find my first period? I just moved here, and didn’t manage to get a tour before the first day.” She flushed a little.

“Um, can I see your schedule?” She scanned over it.

“Oh man, you’ve got Andrews for English. She was a nightmare. I had her two years ago.” Billy furrowed his brows.

“I thought you were new-”

“Harrington’s a fucking tranny!” Stevie’s reaction was immediate.

The second the shout came from down the hall, she slammed her locker shut, shoving Billy’s schedule at him.

“Have a good first day.” She practically ran down the hall.

Billy looked back at the group of rowdy guys, all laughing as Stevie darted down the hall.

“Hey! What the fuck?” Billy stomped up to them, shoving the one that yelled against the lockers. “Don’t fucking say that!”

“Dude, that’s fucking Alex Harrington. He like, disappeared last year. He’s a fucking tra-”

Billy didn’t let him finish the sentence.

Punched him square in the nose.

“Don’t ever fucking using that word. You’re fucking disgusting.” He glared at each of the guys in turn. “If I fucking see, or hear, or get any kinda wind of y’all fucking with her, I’m gonna break all ‘a your noses.”

He smirked as they fucking cowered.

Yeah. Bow to your new fucking King.

He found Stevie back at her locker a few minutes into the lunch period.

He leaned on the lockers next to hers again.

“This place fucking sucks.” She gave him an odd look. “Apparently y’all have to eat in the cafeteria. At my old school, I used to eat out on the football field.”

“Yeah, we don’t really have a football field.” She closed her locker quietly. She was fidgeting with her hands.

“You don’t got a lucnh?”

“I, uh, I usually buy it. But I don’t really wanna, wanna face everyone in there.” Her voice was small, and she was avoiding eye contact.

“I could bring you something. Or stand in line with you, or something.” She looked up at him, biting the inside of her cheek.

“Is this a joke?”

“No?”

“Or like, like a prank?”

“No. I’m really offering.” He tried to keep his face open, wanted her to trust him.

“Um, I guess it would be okay if you stood with me.” They set off down the hall. “But you don’t have to sit with me, or anything.”

“Why wouldn’t I?” She huffed a laugh.

“Did you hear what Tommy yelled this morning?”

“Yeah, I did. Punched him out for it.” Stevie stopped in her tracks, whirling around to look incredulously at Billy.

“You what?”

“He shouldn’t’ve said that.”

“Billy, he wasn’t lying-”

“That’s not what I meant. He shouldn’t have used that specific word, and he shouldn’t’ve fucking outed you. It’s your choice if you want to be out or not.” Her eyes were even fucking bigger than usual as she looked at him.

“I mean, I don’t really have a choice in a town this size. Especially because, because everyone knew me before.”

“Still, it was fucked up. And that wasn’t okay.” They began walking again.

“Um, thank you, Billy. I was wondering who busted Tommy’s face. He’s gotta big mouth. Gets punched a lot.” Billy laughed, and was delighted to see Stevie give him a little half smile.

The smile was gone when they reached the cafeteria.

But Billy stayed in line next to Stevie. She insisted on buying him a cookie, but he split it in half when they found a table in the back corner of the cafeteria, nudging part of it over to her.

She was tense all through lunch, waiting for something to happen.

Billy reached across the table, taking her hand.

“You’re really brave. You know that, right?” She bit her lip.

“I’m so fucking scared.”

“I know you are. And honestly, it makes sense you’re scared. But I’m here for you, and if anyone gets fresh, they can fucking catch these hands.” She laughed softly.

“Thank you. I really don’t think I could’ve made it today without you.” She took a shaky breath. “You know, I came out to my parents a few years ago. They were, it was bad. And I had to, you know stay in the closet. And at the end of last year, in like, Novemner I, I went through some stuff, and I just, I snapped. I tried to hurt myself. And I think it really opened my mom’s eyes that, that I wasn’t faking. So she talked my dad into letting me transition.” She was playing with her napkin.

“Thank you for telling me.” Billy squeezed her hand. “We moved here because my dad got arrested. And he wanted to come start fresh.”

“Do you, can I ask why he got arrested?”

“He broke my collarbone. Pushed me down the porch stairs. Our neighbors saw.”

“Billy, oh my God, I’m so sorry.”

“It’s okay. I mean, it’s not really, but I just wanted you to know. I get the shitty parent thing.” She smiled at him.

“Would you, would you want to come over? After school?” Her cheeks were a little flushed.

“I’d love to.”

Stevie had neglected to tell him that she lived in a fucking mansion.

Billy stared at it as he parked behind her.

“When the fuck were you gonna tell me you were loaded?” She blushed.

“Um, I kinda forget you’re not from here. That you don’t already know all my business.”

She led him upstairs to her bedroom. It was immaculately clean, but so very plain.

“My mom was real serious about designing our whole house. She’s in the process of redoing my room right now. I mean, I didn’t really mind, but I think she’s trying to make amends, really show me she accepts me.” Billy sat down at her desk as she made a home for herself on the bed.

“That’s pretty cool of her.”

“Yeah. She’s trying. My dad still calls me Alex most days, though.”

“Do you mind if I ask you why you picked Stevie?”

“Um, Stevie Nicks, actually. I just really respect her and I always liked the name.”

“God, my mom loved Fleetwood Mac. She had all their albums on vinyl, and we’d listen to Tusk, and just like, scream it.”

“Your mom sounds nice.” Billy smiled tightly at her.

“She was.” Stevie’s eyes went wide.

“I’m sorry.” Billy shrugged.

“My stepmom’s not too bad. And my little sister’s a hoot. She’s such a little spitfire, you two would so get along.” He sat back in the desk chair, looking at the things on her desk.

There was a jar she had written on with gold sharpie. It had a few bills and was about half full of change. Curling handwriting spelled Pussy Fund. Billy snorted when he saw it. He held it up to her.

“Pussy Fund?” She laughed.

“I was gonna call it the Coochie Collection but that felt a little crass.”

“That felt crass?” She laughed again.

“My dad’s insurance covers hormones, but nothing else, really, so I’m saving up for confirmation surgery.” Billy dug through his pocket, found three wadded bills, slapping them through the little opening in the top of the jar. “Billy, wait, you don’t have to-”

“Oh, come on. It’s three bucks. You’re my only friend in this damn town. Gonna support the garbage outta you.” She beamed at him.

He phone chimed.

“Oh, hell yeah. It’s hormone o’clock.” She pulled a black bag out of her backpack. She rifled through it, loading a syringe. “Okay, I’ll be back.” She closed the bathroom door softly behind her.

He peaked at the contents of the back. She had a few pills, needles in sterile packaging, antiseptic wipes, sanitizer and latex gloves. Billy stood up to look at the little bottle of clear liquid, estrogen.

She smiled brightly when she came out of the bathroom.

“How long have you been on hormones?” She cleaned up her little bag.

“Um, since January 6th. So just about nine months now. I was just on blockers for a while, and then they introduced the estrogen. And I though giving myself shots was gonna be a big nightmare, but I actually kinda like it.”

“I think that makes sense. It’s helping you.”

“Well, and I feel like everything changed so fast, like looking at pictures from before, I look so different. It’s like my body was just waiting to catch up to my brain.”

“I think it was. Just needed a push in the right direction.”

“Plus, I was always kind of a pretty boy. Like, once I figured out how to do my makeup, how to soften some of the edges, it was pretty easy to really feminize my face.” She stood in front of him, showing her a picture on her phone. “That was from like, last October.”

It was a nice selfie, and she looked quite similar. In the image, Stevie’s hair was shorter, but still closer to her shoulders.

But Billy thinks there was a huge difference between the Stevie in the picture, and the Stevie right in front of him.

Her cheeks were fuller now, her eyes brighter. Her hair was long, bu it was also way thicker.

She just looked so much fucking happier.

“You look a lot happier, now.”

“I am. A lot happier.” She was quiet, swiping through a few more old photos.

“I’m happy for you.” Billy reached out for her, touching her waist softly. “Would you, would you want to go on a date sometime?”

She took a step back.

“Look, you can say no, and I’ll still happily be your friend, I just, I like you a lot, Stevie.

“I um, I don’t know.” She sat heavily on her bed. “Last year, I was dating this girl. We had been together for like, a few months, and I really, I really loved her. So I came out to her, and she, she called me a freak, and disgusting, and stuff.” She was hugging herself, looking the floor.

“Is that one of the things that made you snap?”

“Yeah.”

“I’m sorry. We don’t have to date, that’s okay, Stevie. Focus on yourself. I’m still your friend.”

“I think, I think I do want to date you. You’ve been nothing but kind to me, and I mean, you already know all my baggage. And I’ve known you for like, ten hours.”

“Don’t pressure yourself into something if you’re not ready to date.”

“It’s been almost a year, Billy. And I’ve spent a lot of time in therapy in that year.” She looked up at him, her eyes bright. “Yeah, I wanna go on a date with you.”

And then she did the cutest little wiggle, moving her hips like she couldn’t contain her excitement.

“Friday night? Pick you up at eight?”

“Better make it seven. Things close early around here.”

“You honestly might be the only good thing about this fucking town.”

Here are my full and unfiltered opinions on trans people! Because some people on discord think I’m transphobic!

Trans people are great. I don’t care if you’re trans or not and you’re not special because you are trans, it’s not something you should want to be but it’s something some people are, and I support and respect that and the people but I’m not going to put them on a pedistol because they don’t need that. They need support and the truth not warship and fluffy “oh oh honey!”s.

It’s not transphobic to not want to date a trans person. The genitally (even after any surgery out there) and sometimes outward appearance of trans people doesn’t always match what people are attracted to. It’s simple fact that a biological man that has gone through puberty will have an Adam’s apple and most people who are attracted to women (excluding those attracted to both men and women) will not find that attractive. They will also not find a penis attractive. That is not transphobic that is just fact. There are a few exceptions that will be okay with dating a women with a penis. A FEW. That’s all there needs to me because there are also only a few trans people. It is not transphobic to not be apart of the minority.

You need to disclose that you’re transgender to anyone who will see you naked. I am not saying this because I hate transgender people and want them to be uncomfortable I’m saying that because I love them and want to to stay alive. You don’t know how people will react to you being transgender. The stupidest thing that’s ever been argued against any of my opinions is on this topic. The person told me “you don’t need to disclose if you’re trans if you’re mtf and have the surgery-medically made vaginas look the exact same as a real vagina” which is just a flat out lie. First of all, a penis is not where a vagina is. A vagina is father down, so, when they make the penis into a vagina, the placement of that penis does NOT just magically change. Even then, it’s made by surgeons not artists. They make a scientifically accurate vagina that will survive its purpose, they do not make a beautiful completely accurate vagina. Some people will kill you if they find out you’re trans in private. Tell me one thing, would you rather be hit in public where there are dozens of eyewitnesses who can testify on your behalf or would you rather die in a dusty motel room where no one can really prove who did it? Because that’s the shit that happens to trans people when they say that shit in private. You do it the first time you get them into a public setting and you don’t tell them your address or let them be anywhere in private with you or take your clothes off until you know they are be 1000% okay with dating/being near a trans person. It’s for your own safety.

Now the other reason for disclosing what’s in your pants to a potential sex partner is because sorry baby but some straight men/women just don’t want to sleep with someone with your genitals. It’s not transphobic to not like dick/vagina in any circumstances. Genitals are only a factor in sexuality aka they can still want to be with you for your other attributes but genitals are still a factor, to some people they’re just a bigger deal than to others. Put them first and put their comfort over yours. Think about what’s more nerve racking, telling someone you care about that you have a dick/vagina or getting into bed with someone and realizing they do not have what you think they have in their pants and then having to say you don’t want to sleep with them and possibly facing the “THATS BLANTENT TRANSPHOBIA!!!” bullshit. There’s also the inability to have children thing, but that one to me is kind of a given and I don’t really need to go into too much detail on this.

I don’t think gender fluidity is a legitimate thing because that means that it’s to some degree a personality trait/founded on stereotypes and I do not agree with that at all. But I am not genderfluid so for all I know it’s out there but I’m just not it.

Non binary to me isn’t really a gender but it’s more of a self expression tool, now this is really controversial and I’ve gone into more depth with it other places on that blog and it’s a bit different than trans to me so ima not get into that too much here.

Trans people go through tons of shit but we all do. This is just their battle, and some need to step up and take responsibility. Their struggle is acceptance; I can relate, my family is not accepting of my lack of religion and my sexuality. Their struggle is safety; I have that too, being gay and the fact that literally every other night I wake up to police lights and a new neighbor being carted off to jail for whatever reason (top hits such as: 80 pounds of cocaine under a trailer, that one guy who help 4 teenage girls hostage for 12 years, my neighbors who set their house on fire (with their kids inside how sane), the other neighbors who had actual heroine needles decording their yard, and then there’s all the times my house has been in danger with guns, drunk guys, high guys, people breaking down my door etc etc etc.) literally as I’m writing this I can see police lights out my window... And on top of all that the financial aspect of surgery and hormones; opp got one for that too i have health issues and hospital bills are hell so I’m currently unmedicated fun fun fun.

Basically people in general are good and I love them all to a degree, their opinions are just opinions and I can see that, but if I disagree I will say so and if people can’t handle that they should react with something other than “YOURE TRANSPHOBIC” because if I was, if I really really was, you’d know and I’d wear it like a crown. I am not transphobic and honestly while I’m not attracted to penises in any way and as of now wouldn’t want to date a women with a penis that doesn’t mean I’m closed off to it 100%. I haven’t been in that situation so I can’t say I would never.

The surfing scene is ripe, everyone knows it. Where I live, on the Bukit Peninsula down south, just on this tiny section of the island, there are 9 world class surf breaks. A total surf Mecca. What a lot of people don’t know though, and probably would never guess with all the pot holes, no sidewalks and cracked concrete— is that the island also has a bangin’ skate scene, with almost as many bowls and parks as there are waves.

Head to the west coast of Bali, an hour from the airport and you’ll hit Canggu. In Bahasa Indonesia, the letter C makes a Ch sound. Pronounced; chun-goo. Canggu. The Byron Bay of Bali.

Pretty Poison, positioned in the middle of the infamous shortcut (the Canggu shortcut is a road running across, right through the middle of rice paddies, with a meter drop on either side of the narrow road. The HOC park is small, as is their pool (essentially a wading pool). But, as anyone who’s seen alcohol and bodies of water combined will tell you; it’s best to keep it shallow.

The size ceases to matter though, with views like this. An evening skate with the sun dropping over the greenest of flurry green paddies, good company and some sexy people in the pool. Things could certainly be worse.

Heading a little further out of Changgu, you’ll find this glorious place; Motion Skatepark. It reminds me of the hangar level in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2— except instead of being in the made up land of Mullet Falls, like it is in the game, Motion is bang in the tourist center of Kuta. Smooth concrete with wooden ramps, funboxes, gaps, a six set and rails galore.

This indoor beast is made by Motion Skatepark Co.—the crew behind many/most of Bali’s bowls and skating facilities from here to Ubud and as far as the neighboring island of Lombok and mainland Jakarta. These guys change up the park every year, which makes the entry fee of 30.000 IDR (around $3 AUD) ridiculously cheap for all day indoor skating. A wet season go-to. Here you can expect to see some the gnarliest skaters on the island.

Also made by the Motion Skatepark Co. is Amplitude Skatepark. It looks like the result of a crazy dream a skater had. ‘First, I’ll build a 9ft deep bowl! Then I’ll put a pump track with a million humps and bumps around it! I’ll finish this bad boy off with an L-shaped street skating section! It’ll be sick.’

That’s exactly what they did, and the park turned out oh so well. It really is a thing of beauty. A giant world class pump track entirely wrapped around the deepest bowl in Bali. Though these three are my picks of the litter for places to skate in Bali, there are so many more. And me, not being a fan of secrets, will share all I know with ya! Here is a quick list of other bowls, pipes and parks in southern Bali, broken up into area.

Changgu area:

Deus ex Machina has a solid little concrete half pipe on the side of their shop. Go here to also check out handmade surfboards and motorcycles.

Konkrete store café and bar has a bowl. One of the many made by the Motion Skatepark Co. dudes. It’s nice and attracts a good crowd.

Kuta area:

Donkey skate park. An indoor wooden park with some nice rails, half pipes, ledges and kickers.

Bukit Peninsula area:

The outside corner just past Padang Padang surfbreak. They have a sweet bowl with various corner sizes and steel coping.

Balangan surf skate offers accommodation, food, beers and a skatepark. This place started with just the bowl, and things went from there.

Another bowl right near Balangan beach is the Bukit Bowl. A skatepark with a nice big bowl with pool coping and few other ramps and ledges around it. They also run a homestay here.

The Globe Bali skatepark is just after the airport as you’re coming onto the Bukit Peninsula. This park features a concrete coping bowl with a volcano shooting out of the middle, and a mini ramp with a hump. They also run a well-stocked skate shop on site.

There you have it—Bali is as nuts about skating as it is surfing. Grab your board and get down here! Though these are some of the great parks, I reckon there are some equally as rad street spots around, ripe for the skatin’. Get on the moto and have a hunt.

My Transition Part 3

A short time after the fashion show I was ask to help out at church for an Hawaiian event. They wanted me in the show but I didn’t know any of the dances, so I volunteered to Serve the drinks to the tables. Some girls would take their orders and I would hand deliver their drinks to them. I still enjoy it and watching the dancers. I was thinking about joining them but My hips were getting too bad to be dancing. So I didn’t even asked them. I do love to dance.

Then my dad’s wife called me and said he was doing real bad and I really should try to come up there and see him one last time. So I made arrangements to go and i went up there to Montana. I was a little concerned about going through utah but it is the quickest route, I did have to stop for gas in utah though.I went in and paid, then while I was putting the gas in my car, the people that ran the place got on the microphone and started yelling at me to get out of here, we’re going to call the cops and say your trying to have sex with them. and many other things. So I put the gas handle on the slowest speed. acted like I couldn’t hear a thing. Washed my windshield then when the gas was done I bent over and mooned them. Got in my car and left drive at a slow pace till I was away from them. I proceeded on to Montana. Stayed there five days then came home. I was driving My Camero, It looked like a race car.It was white with two black racing stripes over the entire car. And it also had a big hood scoop which is called an induction scoop. pretty soon a car passes me. It was another sports car. So I pass him, them soon he passes me. We kept playing tag all the way through Utah. It helped make the long boring trip more entertaining.

So now what they are doing is going to the rest homes and finding people who need full time care and get them transferred to their so called clinic. Which they don’t have, Then they take them home with them and torture them until they sigh every thing over to them, Their bank account, car, home, and anything else of value. Then they kill them and take them out in the desert and bury them. Gary figured this out and he called the cops. They cops wont do anything about it. So these neighbors keep coming after him. One time they caught him and beat him very badly. They broke his ribs, and many cuts and scrapes. He ended up in the hospital. The cops still wouldn’t do anything. So while I was there, I used to always walk two miles every morning for many years. I was still trying to do it. and one of them followed me. I had a pit bull with me so I wasn’t to worried. but he ended up pulling his pickup right in front of me. blocking my sidewalk, and he told me that the next time he see’s me out here he will kill me. So right there and then I pulled out my phone and called 911. I had noticed he didn’t have any plates on his truck and he ran it home and hide it inside the garage. When the cops got there a woman police officer got out of the car also, so I went over to her and asked her if she had any authority. She said no I’m only a rookie. So I told her to please watch this, I told her right after I tell the male officer what happened, he is going to try to arrest me. She said No, we don’t do that. and If he does I can’t do anything. I said I know but I want you to see what kind of police force you signed on too.

Ragnaring it to the beach

You may have heard of the ‘Reach The Beach’ (RTB) running relay, the 200 mile, mountain to ocean run thru New Hampshire that has occurred each of the last 19 years. This year a chance came up to join a group of fellow Medfield Soles as part of a 12 person team that was going to take on the 20th anniversary edition of the race. I’ve had RTB on my bucket list for a while, and while true that I didn’t start 2018 thinking this was the year I was going to get Reach The Beach done, when the chance came, and knowing the people going into the run, it was too good an opportunity to miss.

The Inception

Some of our regular Saturday running group had done this Reach The Beach relay before, teaming up with a group out of New York and Connecticut who ran under the team banner of ‘Fox Chase’. When young Adam Graber floated the idea of the 2018 edition as a challenge and started looking for a team of 12 from Medfield, a chance to bring us together with the New York/CT group arose. Thanks to the coordination of Heidi Lusby and Matt Parnell, we were able to form one half (6 people) of a 3rd team under the ‘Fox Chase’ banner. It was the first time the ‘Fox Chase’ folk were putting in a 3rd team, and meant that 36 people needed coordinating and communicating.

This operation is efficient. As in, military precision efficient. Matt P is a man with the right tools, and communication brilliance to collect data, plan and distribute information effortlessly and in a timely fashion. We received detailed plans on leg assignments, shopping and packing lists, timings, expectations. Every time I sent an email back to Matt I got a response immediately. Doing that across 36 people is no mean feat. The fact, as you will see, that this went off smoothly is down to the efforts of Matt and his supporting crew. ‘Fox Chase’ were the perfect guides for us entering this race and they left nothing to chance or the unknown.

The Basics

1 team. 12 runners. 2 vans. 200-ish miles (just a little bit more), 36 legs, each leg typically between 4 and 8 miles, though some are shorter, some are longer. You and your 5 fellow van mates take turns at running 6 consecutive legs. The other van waits at the end of those 6 legs and then takes over running the next 6. Lather, rinse, repeat. When you and your van are doing 6 legs, you are either running or supporting - watering, cheering, getting your runner thru their leg and readying the next runner. When you and your van are waiting for the other van to do their thing, you maybe get a meal, some sleep, some cleaning up. Time goes quickly.

Our Setup

Our 6 Medfield-ites (actually 5 current Medfielders and 1 ex-Medfielder) left the ‘052 at 6:30am on Friday to get to Bretton Woods, the starting point, and the rendezvous with the rest of the Fox Chase crowd, by 10:30am. We had a race start time of noon, and needed to ensure we had time to have our safety equipment checked, watch the Ragnar safety video, get t-shirts, numbers and vans pimped out. A quick swing off 495 to pick up our ex-Medfielder, and a stop in Tilton, NH to pick up breakfast, and we were in Bretton Woods in plenty of time.

‘Hit The Mountain George!’

There is of course an app to show you the various legs of the relay and allow you to spend hours thinking about what you are stepping off into. Our runner #1, George, knew what was in front of him when he toe’d the start line - run up the slope of Bretton Woods ski mountain before coming back down to hand off number 1. Never. Any. Doubt. Crushed it! And with that we begin the process that would define the next 26 hours.

Get to the next transition area (or ‘TA’ but now known forever in our van-speak as a ‘trannie’) or an intermediate spot on longer legs to check in with the runner and offer water or words of encouragement/harassment. All in good humor (rarely in good taste).

Every 7th trannie, get the other van started. It’s simple, it’s exciting. You are never in the van for long.

The Running Bit

OK, so this is my running experience. Everyone has their own set of stages, temperatures, challenges, sights, running ‘partners’ and goals. Those who’d done this before knew where the tough parts lay, their strategies, and what they had set out to conquer for themselves.

I was representing the ‘Clyde army’ in van 1 (I often represent the ‘Clyde army’ in the runs I do with others). The others are all stellar runners - awesome form, strong, steady. Great people to be around, learn from, and great encouragement for one another.

My first leg was leg 4, 2.9 miles. And most of that downhill. Like seriously downhill. Like brakes on the whole way down, downhill. My running app, Strava, reckons I clocked my best 1 and 2 mile runs ever; the power of gravity! I felt great, though knew all that downhill was likely to show up later in my legs. And passing a guy, whom I’d had in my sights for about a half mile, as we got to ‘trannie 4′ made me feel fabulous.

My second leg was my nighttime leg. And I had the privilege of running from Friday into Saturday, starting around 11:45pm and finishing at 12:45am. So I’d been prepping myself for this section. 6.2 miles was the distance. No problem. I knew the leg was rated ‘HARD’ which given the distance meant one thing - challenging hills. And it didn’t disappoint. Straight up right out of the start area. Climbing 400 ft over the first mile & a bit. The top of that hill was a long way away, broken by a group of neighbors partying 3/4 of the way up and handing out water. That was a real lift. Then 2 miles of steady downhill. And then another mile of a similar climb. That 2nd climb was brutal, but from that peak it was straight and downhill all the way to the finish. I loved getting to this finish line. So much so I busted out my ludicrous dance moves with some dude dressed as Prince. That is now forever enshrined on the internet. And I’m am happy for it.

My third leg, on Saturday morning was leg 28. It was also rated hard. This time 5.7 miles, so again not a massive distance. And elevation netted out from start to finish as a drop. But the trick in this leg was the rolling nature of the run. My legs at this point were garbage from the prior runs and the miles along this stretch were hard earned. Getting over the finish line, to the cheers of the guy dressed as ‘Santa’ plus those awesome teammates cheering me up that final rise, was a massive lift. Plus now I know that all the elves in Santa’s workshop will be called ‘Johnnie’ this year; Santa promised it to me.

Being done with your running is a great feeling. There is still work to do getting your friends to their own finish lines and cheering on the next runner. But the healing of your body can begin.

The In-Between Bits

Time flew. 26 hours just melts. Sure you maybe running for around 3 hours in total, but those other hours are not a time to catch up on your reading, or meditate. You’ve got work to do. Get out and rally your fellow runners, across all the teams. Get your van to the next TA. Catch up with the other van, other teams at major changeovers.

We had a couple of folks in our van with some good local area knowledge. At the end of our first set of legs, this allowed us to

Get a quality dinner & a beer at a Mexican restaurant. No one said you needed to be on an Olympian’s diet.

We got to the next major changeover (TA12) in time for some folks to rollout sleeping bags and lay under the night sky for some rest. A couple of us decamped inside the high school to sit in comfortable chairs, chat and listen to the country and the western music of the Crunchy Western Boys. Slipping into sleep would have been sooooo easy.

Now more driving - it’s the overnight legs. We were running legs 13 to 18 from 9:45pm to roughly 2:30am. This is a key part of the Ragnar experience; overnight running. Again we would ensure every runner could check in with us every couple of miles, able to get water and for safety. On my leg, it was great just to hear my teammates voices at the top of each hill. As hard as my leg felt, seeing Sarah M power thru leg 17, barefoot, which felt in the van like it was 6 miles of one long climb, was jaw dropping. Our team was crushing this course and at night when the temps were cooler and ‘Quiet Zones’ were in effect, we made sure our runners knew we were there for them every step of the way.

The handover back to van 2 at TA18, again at a HS, delivered the spectacle of runners lights & a mob of people who shouldn’t be as happy and chatty and full of encouragement at that crazy early time of the day. Everyone was buzzing. But now we motored to the next major trannie to get some rest. Again local knowledge prevailed as Jodi motored us thru the countryside to maximize our rest time before we were running again. We were the first at TA23 and took advantage to spread out on the ground and get some sleep.

Sleep of course is subjective. Some got 2-3 hours. I got maybe an hour, but just being laid out was rejuvenating. It had to be, because by 7:30 we were rolling again. Breakfast was ‘on the fly’. People grabbed from dishes prepared by locals at the TAs. Or what they had brought. We were going and the end was in sight.

The handover to van 2 at TA30 was the last major one. For us it was the end of running. And the one where the local HS had opened their locker rooms for runners to be able to shower and change. A $5 charge felt like the best $5 I’d ever spent. We’d of course been sweating and running and then ‘cleaning up’ in the van with little to no more than time to change into dry clothes between runs. The ‘Dude Shower’ wipes helped keep the ‘race funk’ down, but nothing cleans like warm, soapy water. Oh sweet, happy, funny soap and toothpaste. Such simple pleasures.

Van Life

You get the right people, van life is awesome. Van life in Fox Chase Team 3 Van 1 was awesome. From the time we loaded up in Medfield on Friday morning, to the time we unpacked back in Medfield on Saturday evening, van life was fantastic. I had gotten to know 3 of my van mates over the last couple of years (thru running). Two of the folks I barely knew. Not a problem. I can now count all 5 of them as good friends. Banter was natural. Stories shared, laughs spread throughout.

A 12 passenger van carrying 6 people and all their stuff may sound like its plenty of room for everyone. And sure, no one was on anyone else’s lap. But with sleeping bags, food, changes of clothes, towels, water, trash (be environment friendly - carry it with you), there was a lot to keep moving. Folks had to change in the van at discrete moments. Jokes, stories, van humor, van speak all develop thru this continuous experience you are putting yourself thru. Don’t think about your next leg. Share the story of those who’ve gone before you.

We joked on the way home that we should rent a van every weekend and just drive around together for 26 hours, just to repeat the laughs and stories and events that had entertained us so thoroughly. Maybe every weekend might be pushing it, but go into this experience with an open mind and readiness to be a part of a team, you’ll have no problems and nothing but laughs.

Other Thoughts

Volunteers - make this race. Throughout New Hampshire, the folks who staffed the trannies, waved flags, served food, helped at first aid stations, counted people in and out, were phenomenal. They were out for huge numbers of hours, day and night. They came to cheer, to support. They came with food, with music. They came dressed as Santa and as Prince. Every TA was well staffed. Had a full set of portapotties. This race would not function, nor be as popular or as ‘easy’ to do without these generous and warm people giving of their time so completely. Thank you NH!

Food - you need to bring your own. You’ll likely have time with your team mates to have at least one meal before the end of the race, whether dinner or breakfast. So bring portable, run friendly foods with you. But don’t overload your bags with food. Know what is good for you before a run. Know what you need post race. My teammates who’d done this before had sensible, portable options beyond cereal bars and protein drinks. Hard-boiled eggs. Fresh veggies. Nut butter. Pepperoni. Share, learn, I know I did and would pack some different options for the next time.

Water - bring lots of it.

Communication - you have to communicate not only within your van, but also with the folks in the other van. For us the other van consisted of people most of us didn’t know. They were from the core of the ‘Fox Chase’ team and among them had some veterans who shared many tips and stories between major changeovers. It would have been great to spend more time with these fine people who had extended a warm welcome to us, as well as a chance to spend the night before the race and the night after the race with them at ‘Fox Chase’ back near Sunapee. Another time we will likely take them up on their offer. Communication via text made things straight forward .... apart from when the cell coverage was poor.

Finish & Home

We’d headed to the town of Hampton Beach after leaving TA30 all showered (well most of us) & ready to celebrate. We had time for a relaxing lunch, a beer and a walk down the beach to the finish line. Now we represented one van (6 people) of one (12 people) of three teams (36 people) running under the Fox Chase banner. That is 36 people running over 200 miles over 26 hours. Just getting those folks organized before the race was an operation on the same level as organizing a major military campaign. Yet Matt Parnell from the Fox Chase group did this effortlessly. With weeks of planning he’d devised team rosters and leg assignments to get each team as close to finishing at the same time as possible. Then throw in last minute withdrawals and then in-race retirements due to injury, and surely timing was out the window and we’d see who finished when.

Not a problem. People stood up and took on extra legs. Our own George Mix picked up an extra leg and did 2 legs back to back on Saturday morning, basically banging out a half marathon after running and driving and waiting for 20 hours. Phenomenal. Others did similar. And the net result? All three teams coming down the beach to the finish line at the same time! That was an amazing sight. All the runners across all the teams getting into a group and running those last 100 yards thru the finish line, celebrating, being pictured, shaking hands, hugging all together.

We were done. Bling collected. Friendships established, plans for next year starting to come together. We departed Hampton Beach leaving the rest of Fox Chase to enjoy their annual dip in the water before heading back to their compound and celebrate the completion of another RTB relay.

We loaded back up in our van and headed south. The spirit didn’t fade. Yeah, everyone was tired, looking forward to seeing family, your own bed, and stretch out. But also with a tinge of sadness that such a great adventure and experience was done.

Done, but not to be forgotten. Pictures were exchanged. Emails, contacts, social media profiles set up. In the hours immediately after the race, texts flew back and forth. In the next few days laughs exchanged at the expense of folks and their inability to walk/run/sit down/handle stairs. The photo exchanging between us and between the wider Fox Chase group continues. It’s great to see such a wider view of the relay thru the eyes of the others.

The Big Questions

Would you do it again?

YUP ... I’d do it with the same people, in the same setup. Or bring some new friends to the experience. I’d even volunteer to do the same 3 legs. Why? I want to get the challenge of those hills down cold. Then I’ll look at other legs. I don’t know if the others feel the same, but I am all about getting those legs (16 and 28) done better, faster, stronger. That may take the entire next 12 months of hill work and leg workouts and dieting. But I’m going to get those bastards.

What I recommend it to others?

YUP .... if you are looking for this sort of challenge. Endurance. Distance. Hills. Discomfort. Close relationships. I’m no adventure seeker, but this for me was a chance to break out of suburbia and put myself out there.

Would you try another Ragnar event?

Think so. Have talked with some folks of a destination race. Maybe a Ragnar event would be the one.

So that was me and my first Ragnar experience. Hopefully you got a taste for 26 hours of running, laughing, living and traveling. Running for me is all about the challenge and all about the friendships. Ragnar Reach The Beach gets you both in greater amounts than you may find in any other experience.
