Ink Impressions
Summary: Y/N is a hot new tattoo artist that Derek and Emily want to see more of...
Pairing: Spencer Reid x fem!reader
Category: fluff
Warnings/Includes: tattoos
Word count: 2.1k
main masterlist
Tumblr media
Derek Morgan found himself walking through a part of town he didn't visit often. His steps slowed as he passed a new shop front: Ink Impressions. The sign was sleek, with an artistic flair that caught his eye. It was new, and he’d heard a few people at the gym talk about how talented the artist was. Curious, and with a rare free afternoon on his hands, Derek decided to check it out.
The interior was a mix of industrial chic and cozy comfort. Dark wooden floors complemented exposed brick walls adorned with framed tattoo designs ranging from intricate mandalas to minimalist line art. The hum of tattoo machines filled the air, mingling with the scent of antiseptic and the quiet murmur of clients and artists in conversation.
Derek approached the front desk, where a young man with a friendly smile greeted him. "Hey, welcome to Ink Impressions. How can we help you today?"
"I'm thinking about getting a tattoo," Derek replied, his voice carrying its usual confidence. "Do you guys take drop ins?"
The young man nodded, gesturing towards the back of the shop. "You’re in luck. Our lead artist is available. Her name’s Y/N. She’s amazing. I’ll take you to her."
Derek followed, feeling a mix of excitement and anticipation. They rounded a corner, and there she was. Y/N was seated at her station, her focus intense as she worked on a client's arm. She was striking, with vibrant hair that fell around her face in waves, a few tattoos peeking out from under her sleeves. She exuded an air of confidence and artistic passion that immediately drew Derek in.
The young man cleared his throat softly. "Y/N, this is Derek. He’s stopped by for a drop in. Do you think you can fit him in before your next appointment?”
Y/N looked up, her eyes meeting Derek’s with a warmth that made his heart skip a beat. She smiled, setting down her tools and removing her gloves. "Hi, Derek. It’s nice to meet you. I’d love to help you with that. Do you have any specific ideas, or would you like me to create something unique for you?"
Derek felt his usual charm waver slightly under her gaze, but he recovered quickly. "I have some ideas, but I’d love to see your take on it."
After Y/N finished with her initial client, she sat down with Derek and discussed the concept, and Y/N sketched a design that captured the essence of strength and resilience, elements that resonated deeply with Derek. Her talent was evident in every stroke, and he was impressed not only by her skill but also by the way she listened and understood the emotions behind his request.
As she prepared her station, Derek glanced around the shop, trying to mask his growing interest in her. "So, how long have you been tattooing?"
Y/N smiled, her eyes sparkling with pride. "About seven years now. I started apprenticing right out of high school and never looked back. I opened this shop a few months ago."
"That’s impressive," Derek replied, genuinely admiring her dedication.
Y/N began the tattoo, her touch gentle yet precise. "What about you? What do you do?"
"I’m an FBI agent," Derek said, watching her work. "Behavioral Analysis Unit."
Y/N looked up, a hint of intrigue in her eyes. "Wow, that sounds intense. Do you solve a lot of mysteries?"
Internally, Y/N couldn't help but laugh. She knew exactly who Derek Morgan was. Spencer had talked about him often enough—his partner at the BAU, a close friend. She could almost hear Spencer’s voice, recounting their cases, his admiration for Derek's skills and strength.
So this is the famous Derek Morgan, she thought, amused. Small world. But she kept her face neutral, professional. She didn’t want to mix business with pleasure. The last thing she needed was for Derek to know she was dating his colleague. It would complicate things, and she prided herself on maintaining a clear boundary between her personal and professional life.
"Yeah, it can be," Derek replied, oblivious to her internal amusement. "It’s challenging, but I love it."
As the session went on, Derek found himself captivated not only by Y/N’s talent but by her presence. She was easy to talk to, and he enjoyed the way she seemed genuinely interested in his stories. There was an effortless connection, a spark that he hadn’t felt in a long time.
When she finished, Derek looked at the tattoo in the mirror, his heart swelling with emotion. "It’s perfect," he said, his voice thick with gratitude. "Thank you."
Y/N smiled, her expression warm and sincere. "I’m glad you like it, Derek. It was an honor to create this for you."
As he paid and prepared to leave, Derek couldn’t help but linger. "Maybe I’ll be back for another one," he said, his tone slightly teasing.
Y/N’s smile widened, and there was a twinkle in her eye. "I’d like that. You know where to find me."
As Derek walked out of Ink Impressions, the cool air hitting his face, he couldn’t stop thinking about Y/N. He knew he’d be back—not just for another tattoo, but to see her again.
The bullpen was bustling with the usual Monday morning activity as the team settled back into their routines. Derek Morgan entered with a confident swagger, a fresh energy emanating from him. As he passed by desks, he couldn't resist pulling up his sleeve to show off his new tattoo. It was an intricate design, beautifully done, and it immediately drew attention.
Emily Prentiss, seated at her desk, caught sight of the tattoo and her eyes widened in admiration. "Wow, Morgan! That’s incredible. When did you get that done?"
Derek grinned, obviously pleased with her reaction. "Got it on Saturday. There’s this new shop called Ink Impressions. The artist is amazing. She really knows her stuff."
Emily stood and walked over, examining the tattoo more closely. "The detail is fantastic. Who's the artist?"
Derek leaned back in his chair, a playful smile on his face. "Her name’s Y/N. She’s not just talented—she’s also incredibly sexy."
Emily raised an eyebrow, a smirk forming on her lips. "Sexy and talented, huh? Sounds like you had quite the experience."
Derek chuckled. "You could say that. She’s got this way about her—confident, passionate about her work. You should definitely check her out if you're thinking about getting some ink."
Emily's interest was piqued. "I’ve been considering a tattoo for a while now. Maybe it’s time to finally go for it."
Derek nodded enthusiastically. "You won't regret it, Prentiss. Y/N’s the real deal. Plus, the shop's vibe is great—professional but with a cool, laid-back atmosphere."
Emily looked thoughtful, already envisioning what design she might want. "Alright, I’m sold. I’ll swing by Ink Impressions this week and see if she has any openings."
As they chatted, Penelope Garcia sauntered over, having overheard part of their conversation. "What’s this about a sexy tattoo artist?" she asked, waggling her eyebrows.
Derek laughed. "Garcia, I think you’d love her. She’s got this artistic flair that’s right up your alley."
Garcia clapped her hands together. "Well, now I have to see this for myself. Maybe I’ll get something small to start with."
Emily grinned. "Looks like Y/N might have a few new clients this week."
As they shared a laugh, the phone rang, signaling the start of another case. The team quickly shifted gears, but there was a newfound buzz of excitement. Derek's tattoo had not only impressed his colleagues but also sparked a sense of camaraderie and curiosity.
Throughout the day, Derek couldn't help but think about Y/N and the connection they’d shared. He was eager to see her again, not just for her talent but for the undeniable chemistry between them. Little did he know, Emily and Garcia’s upcoming visits to Ink Impressions would bring them all a step closer to intertwining personal and professional lives in ways they hadn't anticipated.
Emily Prentiss walked into the shop, greeted by the familiar hum of tattoo machines. She was greeted warmly by the receptionist and soon found herself in front of Y/N, who looked up with a welcoming smile.
"Hi there! What can I do for you today?" Y/N asked, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.
Emily smiled, feeling instantly at ease. "Hi, I’m Emily. A friend of mine, Derek Morgan, got a tattoo here recently. I was so impressed that I decided to get one myself."
Recognition flashed in Y/N's eyes, and she chuckled inwardly, remembering the charismatic agent. "Ah, Derek! He’s a great guy. What are you thinking of getting?"
As Emily described her idea, Y/N listened intently, her mind already envisioning the design. Despite knowing Derek and his world, she kept her focus on her craft, maintaining the professional boundary she valued. But as she worked on Emily's tattoo, she couldn't help but feel a growing connection to these agents, wondering how long she could keep her secret before the lines between business and pleasure inevitably blurred.
The BAU team had decided to unwind after a long week, gathering at their favorite local bar. The place was lively, filled with the hum of conversation, clinking glasses, and the distant sound of live music. Spencer Reid had just returned from visiting his mother in Las Vegas, and he was grateful for the chance to catch up with his colleagues in a more relaxed setting.
As the team settled into their booth, drinks in hand, Emily Prentiss and Derek Morgan were excitedly discussing their recent tattoos. Emily pulled up her sleeve to show off the intricate design on her forearm, while Derek proudly displayed the tattoo on his bicep.
"You guys have to see this," Emily said, her eyes shining. "Y/N is incredible. Her artistry is on another level."
Derek nodded enthusiastically. "And she's not just talented—she’s smoking hot. I’m telling you, she’s got this whole vibe that’s hard to resist."
Emily laughed. "We were just saying, it’s almost a competition to see who’s going to ask her out first."
They both looked at each other, playfully competitive. "You think you can beat me, Prentiss?" Derek teased.
"Oh, I know I can," Emily shot back, a mischievous grin on her face.
Spencer, sitting quietly beside them, listened to their banter with a growing sense of unease. His fingers tightened around his glass as he processed their words. The name Y/N echoed in his mind. He knew exactly who they were talking about. His girlfriend, Y/N, was the talented artist they were raving about.
Trying to maintain his composure, Spencer asked, "What shop did you guys go to?"
Emily turned to him, still smiling. "It’s called Ink Impressions. It’s a new place, but it's already getting a lot of buzz."
Spencer bit his lip, a mix of emotions swirling within him. He felt a pang of jealousy but also pride knowing how highly they thought of Y/N. He took a deep breath, reminding himself to stay calm.
Just then, the bar door swung open, and Spencer’s heart skipped a beat. Y/N walked in, looking around until her eyes landed on him. She smiled warmly and started making her way over to their table.
Emily and Derek continued their playful debate, oblivious to Spencer’s internal turmoil. "I don’t know, Derek. I think I’ve got the upper hand. I mean, she seemed pretty interested when I was there," Emily said, winking.
Derek laughed. "We’ll see about that, Prentiss. I’m not backing down from this challenge."
Spencer couldn't hold it in any longer. He set his drink down and cleared his throat, catching their attention. "You might want to rethink that competition."
Emily and Derek looked at him, confused. "What do you mean?" Derek asked.
Before Spencer could answer, Y/N reached the table, her presence commanding their attention. She placed a gentle hand on Spencer’s shoulder, leaning down to kiss his cheek. "Hey, baby."
Spencer's face lit up with a smile, and he looked up at her with obvious affection. "Hey, beautiful. I’m glad you made it."
Emily and Derek’s jaws dropped simultaneously. "Wait, you two know each other?" Emily asked, incredulous.
Spencer nodded, a hint of smugness in his voice. "Yeah, you could say that."
Y/N grinned, sliding into the booth next to Spencer. "I guess the secret’s out," she said, laughing softly. “Spence here is my boyfriend.” Y/N gazed at him lovingly.
Derek shook his head in disbelief, but there was a playful glint in his eye. "Well, Reid, you’ve been holding out on us. I guess that means you win by default."
Emily chuckled, raising her glass. "To Spencer and Y/N. I guess we don’t need that competition after all."
The team raised their glasses, toasting to the unexpected revelation. As they settled back into their conversation, Spencer felt a sense of relief and happiness. He had nothing to hide anymore, and the night seemed even brighter with Y/N by his side.

༓ A gift for him ༓
Soft!Sukuna x f!reader, sfw, normal au, a part two to this fic. In a quiet act of love, she offers him a gift—her way of returning his unspoken devotion, placed gently into his guarded hands.
Tumblr media
The morning air was quiet, softened by the early hour’s stillness, a calm that filled your shared room with a sense of warmth and ease. Sukuna sat by the window, gazing down at the small, dark box wrapped neatly with a modest ribbon that you had just handed him. For a moment, he stared at it, eyes narrowing as if trying to decipher its meaning before even opening it.
"Go on," you urged softly, a faint smile tracing your lips as you watched him.
With a flick of his fingers, he undid the ribbon, and the small box fell open. Inside lay a watch, its face smooth and glassy, catching the first light of day. It was a classic design—a sleek, silver band and minimalist face, the kind of understated elegance that was unmistakably him. He raised an eyebrow, glancing up at you, a hint of curiosity in his gaze.
When his eyes met yours, you managed a quiet, “I just thought it’d suit you.” Your fingers brushed over the bracelet around your wrist almost absentmindedly—the one he’d given you just a few days ago. You shifted slightly, a little embarrassed by how carefully you’d chosen it, sifting through countless pieces until you found the one that seemed made for him. “Just because.”
A faint smile tugged at the corner of his mouth as he took the watch out of the box, the cool metal weight settling into his palm. He tilted his head slightly, running a thumb over its sleek surface, sensing there was more behind your words—that this gift held a deeper meaning than just a whim. He could tell the choice had been carefully made, from the vintage silver finish to the fine craftsmanship of the face itself. As his fingers traced the links of the band, he imagined how it would feel on his wrist—as if it had always belonged there.
You watched him as he considered the gift, a bit of anticipation building in your chest, hoping he’d sense the deeper intention behind it—that it wasn’t only “just because.” You’d chosen it because it felt like him, yes, but also because there were parts of him he didn’t realise you saw, sides of him he didn’t realise you appreciated. His presence in your life, his steady companionship, his occasional softness—all these things had shaped something in you, created a quiet fondness that was beyond the need for words. And in a way, you hoped the watch might say it for you.
"Just because, huh?" he echoed, his voice low, amused as he slipped the watch over his wrist. His fingers adjusted the band, the silver catching the morning light as he watched it settle around his wrist, the cool weight feeling like a seamless fit.
There was a pause, but you noticed how he seemed to take his time, admiring the watch almost as much as he was taking in the thoughtfulness that came with it. You could sense the weight of his gratitude as he took in the unexpected gesture. Finally, he looked up, his gaze meeting yours with a warmth that made you catch your breath, his expression softened in that subtle way he reserved only for you.
Then, without warning, he reached out and pulled you close, wrapping his arms around you in a rare, unrestrained embrace. The warmth of his chest pressed against yours, his heartbeat steady beneath the layers of fabric, rooting you in a moment that felt timeless. His familiar, musky scent enveloped you, earthy and rich, with warm notes that felt so uniquely his. You let out a soft laugh as he lifted you slightly, your hands instinctively gripping his shoulders as he held you close. His lips brushed your ear as he let you slide back down slowly, his hands lingering around you with a gentleness that few would believe him capable of.
“Thank you,” he murmured, low and warm, the words carrying more weight than they ever had. Though he said nothing more, the glint in his eye hinted at an understanding—a recognition, perhaps, that your gift was more than “just because.”
Tumblr media
A.N. In appreciation for her gift, you give him one in return. This part was a little shorter than the previous but I hope you enjoyed this little paired piece. I have another paired piece with Sukuna planned for later and I also have a Toji version coming soon too! Thank you for reading!

tw: female reader, suggestive, Hajime Iwaizumi (yes he needs a trigger warning cause have you seen that man?!), body worship (I guess?)
Tumblr media
Sweat glistened on his broad back. The vest he had been wearing long since discarded into a crumpled ball in the corner. You watched from the doorway, leaning against the frame for support whilst Iwa pulled himself into his fourth set of hanging pull ups.
You knew he was fit—he had to be—it was his job, but it still took you by surprise from time to time. Not the dedication he showed, more so the sheer power he exuded and so effortlessly. You were a lucky lucky woman.
His summer tan was at its peak, and you admired the beads of sweat that rolled down the length of his spine to catch on the waistband of his shorts. The prominent muscles bunched and shifted in their exertion, grunts pulled from the depths of his chest, and you moaned aloud. That was your downfall.
Hajime paused; his arms fully extended before dropping to the mat below with a soft thud. He knew you were there, could feel the desire of your eyes on his form and it made him smile. Without turning, he grabbed up the towel by his feet and wiped off his face. He flexed. Was he showing off? Maybe…
Your lip was caught between your teeth, fingers stroking the door in lieu of what you really wanted to touch. Anybody would know the exact direction of your thoughts if they were to look at you, but it hardly mattered when you were in the safety of your own home. Why not take what you longed for?
It was that thought that forced your feet into motion, carrying you forward across the hardwood floor and into the path of temptation. Iwa wasn’t even looking in your direction, yet the sway of your hips spoke of a dance that only a lover would indulge in, a slow roll that accentuated your body. A mating call and it was answered when he turned to fix you in place with his heavy gaze.
The adrenaline of a workout always aroused the beast that slumbered inside him. A primal desire to take what was rightly his—and that was you. Long gone were the days that he could turn you into a flustered mess with one arch of his sleek black eyebrow, but you were still a bashful girl under the right circumstances.
He loved that about you. Loved that you openly displayed your desire for him, yet you were also capable of the most intimate, heartfelt words that captivated his heart and mind as well as his body. You were perfection to Hajime, and he never let you go a day without knowing that.
You were locked in a battle of stares.
His hooded eyes slowly took you in, pausing at the stomach he loved to lay his head against and again at the meat of your thighs. He chuckled, and your eyes narrowed. Iwa wondered if the bite marks had finally faded from when he had gotten carried away the other morning. If that was the case, it would need to be remedied.
The sharp rise and fall of his muscled chest was hypnotic. A spell you would willingly fall under and to hell with the consequences. Paired with the suck of his abdomen as he sought to regulate his breathing, you were a goner and still more than ten paces away from him.
Mutual desire and attraction stormed in the small space of the home gym, thick and cloying enough that your throat ran dry. The smell of sweat mingled with the sweet allure of arousal, a unique scent you would roll around in if given the chance. You wanted to throw yourself at him, ride him to the mats below and give him a workout of your own design. One that would see you both panting and dripping from the energy expended.
Clearly, he was not oblivious to your thoughts. Iwa cocked his head, throwing the towel in his hands over his shoulder and reaching out a calloused hand covered in white chalk for you to take. The first rumbling of his voice resonated between your thighs, arousal pooling so fast you worried that simply touching him would have you losing the battle against your sanity.
“I take it you like what you see?”

Dear Vector Prime,
As I’m sure you’re aware, there are universes where the Ark and the Nemesis are Transformers themselves. Has there ever been a case of… forbidden love between the two ships?
Dear Ship Shipper,
In Maximal legend, it is said that long ago, their ancestors created an immense Ark, to carry their people to safe haven on an alien world. Their hated enemies, whose descendants would one day become the Predacons, gave chase in their own vessel, forged to be her equal, her Nemesis.
For her robot mode, they gave this Nemesis vicious talons, capable of raking through layers of hull plating, to expose the crew to the cold night. They molded her with a sleek and arrowlike profile, to be near-invisible in pursuit. They loaded her with artillery, until her every deck bristled with cannons and torpedoes, a single broadside enough to atomize any warship. And they installed a powerful tractor beam, which locked the Ark in a death grip as their warriors boarded, fighting their way to the bridge to send the vessel on a collision course with the planet below. But when this task was done, and they returned to their own ship, they found that this tractor beam would not release its hold.
For all their wicked designs, they made a single miscalculation: as to power her engines, the energy source they chose was none other than the Heart of Cybertron. From this unique and enigmatic artifact, there came the concept of a self. In giving the ship life, they had given her feeling. But was her refusal to deactivate the tractor beam borne of hatred for her creators, for all their cruelty, a desire to see them burnt up and buried? Or was it an act of love, for her counterpart, whom upon meeting, she felt she could not bear to live without?
That is the quandary the Maximals are left with: to call into question the fundamental nature of the foe, and what truly lies in their Heart. Even with my unique ability to step into history, and see the ships as they fall, as they crash, as they lie dormant, as they reawaken, and as they take to the stars once more... I have no especial insight I can offer as to how these beings, greater than any one of us, truly felt about each other.

Hello : )
What is the best dragon depiction you ever saw? Why did you like it?
honestly, it's gonna sound so typical of me, but while most of the How to Train Your Dragon designs are more about wacky aesthetics than functionality, I think the night/light fury design is just outstanding. they could use a little extra patagium, maybe, that little membrane on the upper arm. I could nitpick on the pointy-ness of the wing fingers on Toothless. but the design itself is wonderfully sleek, the wings look genuinely functional in comparison to the body size and there are functional tail fins too! which is cool!
Tumblr media
(image description: the night and light fury dragons from How to Train Your Dragon, flying together in front of a bright sky.)
I also appreciate the unique details here. like, they do have bat-like wings, but they have no wing thumb and there are six fingers instead of five. Their heads are a very aerodynamic shape and they don't suffer from excessive spikes for the sake of having extra spikes. I can truly believe that these creatures are capable of flight! look how far along the body that wing membrane stretches! the light fury especially just looks so sleek. they're good dragon designs!
I also was the sort of kid who had the dragonology book, and looking back at their designs I can easily point out some anatomical issues, but I love how in depth it goes to explain the dragons and all their different types. and I think it's the only place I've ever seen a marsupial dragon, which I adore.
Tumblr media
(image description: photo of a book page from Dragonology, showing a marsupial dragon and a few paragraphs explaining its origin and anatomy. it looks like a reptilian kangaroo with small wings. end description.)
I mean that's pretty cool. it's pretty obviously just "what if kangaroo was dragon", but you really can't get a better body plan than kangaroos when it comes to being a bipedal marsupial. and a marsupial reptile would be very cool!! I love it and I want more dragons to explore unique ideas like this.

I'm going to keep it real and say I did not buy this doll for her clothing quality. I'm genuinely shocked at how low quality the pieces are for how much I paid for her, at retail cost, and how poorly made it is.
The skirt is a kind of shapeless spandex sack attached to a sleeveless bodice with an unhemmed collar and pleather tie. I probably wouldn't have felt so aggrieved if the top and skirt were separate pieces, or if the white shirt had short sleeves attached. It's not even a matter of adding additional pieces to the sleeve, but if they had just extended the shoulder area to have attached sleeves, it probably would look okay. But without them, this outfit requires the jacket to stay on.
The jacket is just papery low quality fabric and the print on it is super fuzzy and pixelated, which makes it feels low quality to me. If the print had crisp stripes, it would help the fabric not look so low grade, but right now it's not great to look at.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also the jacket is weirdly constructed to me as it opens in the front, it requires the belt to keep it closed, but since it isn't attached to anything, the front edges don't line up well when posed. I feel like if they didn't want a fastener on the front due to bulk, the jacket should have been constructed to be like a shirt where it velcros up the back with the front attached to each other. But it just feels poorly executed to me.
The accessories are also kind of bad to me because the packback included doesn't sit well on the doll, and I can't really pose with it due to its awkward shape and size.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The shoes are also a big miss for me as it exemplifies the issue with poorly designed object heels. I really love the front of the shoes as they're chunky, gothy kind of boots with a minimalistic feel to them. Wednesday I feel like is a sleek kind of character design so they fit well in that regard. However the mismatched object heels feel so lazy to me because the cello and scorpian aren't incorporated into the shoe design, but rather haphazrdly shoved on at the back. I feel like for a good object heel, it incorporates itself with the overal shoe design. Like the scorpion tail could have wrapped itself around the boot more, or if the front had more scorpion details like claws or segmented pieces. While the Cello heel could have incorporated more music motifs around the shoe to add texture and bring it together. But instead it just feels like some really nice, yet basic, boots had the heel haphazardly lopped off and two things shoved in the back.As for why I actually got her, I love the fact she has a unique skin tone to Mattel's current range of skin tones. I often don't like Monster High dolls that are basically human dolls but Wednesday's skin tone feels unnaturally deathly, while also keeping that tanned tone to it. As someone with tanned skin, I really think it pulls off that deathly look without sacrificing her race.I also do like the facesculpt and screening for Wednesday, since these are really important aspects for a doll for me. I'm also shocked at how nice her hair is out of the box for a Mattel product. Usually I expect to deal with ratty ends or frizzy hair, but the bangs and ends are gelled really nicely and I don't feel a need to wash her hair.I also do like that Thing can grip onto Wednesday, however since I never watched Wednesday I might wipe the stitches off to make him look more like the 60s and 90s Thing. While the price and fashion quality do drag this doll down, I think the base doll is incredibly unique and I look forward to sewing her a custom outfit and maybe customising her accessories.

line up baby
wanted to make a sort of ref for everyone so i can keep track of everyone's designs, heights, etc
side hcs below cuz i wanna ramble lol
fyi any links are just for pictures to help visualize what im trying to say
also add to these with ur own i love reading hcs :]
general:
the sides work with a kind of cartoon logic (kinda like who framed Roger rabbit) which is what their shape shifting and such is, they can survive pretty much everything, dont bend to reality type thing
i also dig playing around with the idea that they just arent human, they dont need to eat, sleep, even breathe or blink if they dont wanna. They just play more human around thomas so they dont freak him out (everyone but remus at least, dude doesnt give a fuck lol) they all have their priorities regarding that kinda stuff. like logan doesnt eat or sleep almost at all (there r exceptions tho obvi (crofters))  while patton rly likes to cook and bake so why not eat the stuff you make? meanwhile remus eats literally anything he can find
they can also float if they wanna, same thing where they just dont around thomas. this came about me just imagining remus consistently floating around in the mindscape instead of walking for whatever reason? so yeah they can do that
theres a core mindscape and a ‘dark’ mindscape, that sorta works like the upside down from stranger things (as in the dark mindscape is like literally upside down and mirrors everything, like this)
everyones also got their own unique doors to their rooms. logans is very sleek and modern, pattons in more childlike and almost vintage, romans resemble castle doors while remus’ is more like a dungeons, virgils is typically angsty teenager with tons of posters and ‘keep out’ signs, and janus has tons of locks on his
design wise the core sides have straight teeth and fluffier hair while the dark sides have sharp teeth and rougher(?) hair (since changing, virgil has vampire-esque fangs)
logan:
square rimmed glasses
loves the rain
unintentionally fidgets with his clothes, always adjusting his glasses or rolling his sleeves up and down or messing with the buttons or his tie
playing more into the whole ‘sides dont have to eat thing’ he finds food kinda nasty lol, again only rly eats stuff thats very good to him (ultimate picky eater basically) patton has tried and failed many times to get logan to try and like new foods
roman was the one who got him to try crofters
watches those long ass video essays about random topics on youtube for background noise
patton:
round glasses and heart eyes
has roller blades/skates! specifically these ones that retract the wheels. good way of getting energy out (even if hes super clumsy with them)
tallest + dad bod
tons of bandages, kinda playing around with the phrase ‘broken heart’
him and janus play video games together (both of them are terrible lol)
definitely listens to dad rock/dad music
roman:
starry eyes!
crown can float on its own (same w/ remus’)
has one of these couches in his room to dramatically faint onto
him and remus dont share a room, but they have a sort of portal to each others rooms if that makes sense. a big mirror but instead of reflecting, its showing into the other room and only the twins can go thru
wants to be his own side after the split
roman and remus pierced each others ears when they were younger
virgil:
decently tall but slouches a lot which hides it (slouching hes shorter than the twins but still taller than janus) also rarely stands or sits straight at all so it kinda shocked the core sides when he showed them how tall he rly was (queue roman being mad cuz hes actually the shortest of the main four lol)
has stereotypical emo hair and still has some purple dye in it
hot topic skeleton fingerless gloves and muddy sneakers (idk why it just feels right)
tons of random bruises
draws his nails black with sharpie
listens to metal music to calm down. remus got him into a lot of numetal, screamo kinda music when virgil was still one of the others, it was one of the few times theyd hang out and virgil wasnt 100% freaked out by remus
definitely experimented with scene fashion when thomas was a teenager
drinks tons of energy drinks
janus:
shortest ha
yellow eyes
bow wrapped on his hat
long flowy cape and heeled shoes with spats (thats what theyre called right?)
uses the staff from pof as a walking cane
speaks fluent pig latin, remus and logan are the only ones who can somewhat understand what he says (remus cuz hes been around janus so long, and logan wanting to research and understand whatever the hell janus is saying) it also has always drove virgil up the wall cuz hes never been able to get it, janus will start speaking it just to annoy him
only rly relaxes when by himself, always kinda putting on a mask with the others and thomas, regardless of how trustworthy he considers them
constantly coming up with proper plans and schemes, typically wouldnt let remus near them with a 10 foot pole (affectionately)
knows how to lockpick
scared of the ocean
remus:
broken crown
eyes can go all crazy, pupils can be different sizes and such (there was a cartoon that did this where the eyes would go red and have a ton of rings around the pupils like spirals kinda? i cant find a pic of what im rly visualizing rip i hope that makes sense)
ton of rings (one of em is an eyeball ring)
is like half an inch taller than roman and will never let him live it down
enjoys all the ‘bad’ disney/pixar movies. (cars, home on the range, etc) and like unironically enjoys them. prolly started ironically to mess with roman but he genuinely find those ones the best and cant fathom why theyre disliked (totally not self-indulgent cuz some of those movies are my favorites)
comes up with random weird plans and ropes janus into them whenever possible, janus plays along best he can
somewhat wants to fuse back with roman (even if hes unsure why)
remus and virge used to make fun of roman together all the time
remus is the one who gave virge his septum and gages

The Problem with King Magnifico
King Magnifico is the best part of Disney's Wish. He's got a sleek design, the most fun animation, and Chris Pine does a fantastic job hamming it up as a classic-style Disney villain.
With that said, he's a good villain, but fails to be a great one.
At first, I thought this was mainly because of all the Member Berries; as the movie goes on he increasingly starts aping past Disney villains which kind of makes him lose his unique identity. However, I've now realized that there's a deeper reason, which lies in comparison to Dreamworks' superior Wishing Star movie, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and its villains:
Tumblr media
For some reason, the writers of Wish tried to push King Magnifico into all three categories, and it just doesn't work. It is possible for a Sympathetic Villain to develop into a Serious, Scary Villain or for an Unsympathetic Villain to develop into a Serious, Scary Villain. But it is exceedingly difficult, if not downright impossible, to blend or have a transition with a Sympathetic Villain and an Unsympathetic Villain, because that creates way too much of a dissonance. This is where Magnifico was fumbled: before his turn to a Serious, Scary Villain they try to have it both ways, setting him up as sympathetic due to his backstory, seemingly genuine desire to do right by his kingdom even if the way he does it is misguided, and the love he shares with his wife, only to also have him unsympathetic by depicting him as a petty, petulant, thick-headed narcissistic douchebag. This results in confusion in his motivation for why he is doing what he does during the first half of the movie or why he turns to the forbidden magic that drives him mad with power, and also makes it unclear whether we are supposed to see his final fate as a tragedy or a case of him getting what he deserves.
It's very obvious from The Art of Wish that King Magnifico got changed in development. The earliest drafts clearly had him as a humanized villain who starts off sympathetic but goes off the deep end into irredeemable evil; his initial altruistic goals having given way to him just wanting to play God. There's no indication that the forbidden magic was originally going to have any effect on his mental state at all; the fact that he would even use it was simply meant to be his crossing of the Moral Event Horizon, showing that he would rather destroy his kingdom than let anyone or anything other than him have control over it. But the perceived need for Member Berries took a toll on the character, and thus he ended up undercooked.
...Still better cooked than anyone else in the film, though! Go see it for him, people!

I'm a loser who both spends too much time playing gacha games and loves to hear myself talk, so here's another game review style post, this time covering my first day playing Break My Case. This time I'm not even being a little hater! I'm a lover! I'm cringe! I'm free! I love you Coly! I love you ikemen gacha games!!!!!!!
Break My Case is a new puzzle-music-adventure mobile game from Coly, the developers behind Mahoutsukai no Yakusoku and On Air. More relevant to BMC/BreMai is their game Stand My Heroes, with which it shares a writer, some gameplay elements, and of course a naming convention. Coly has developed a bit of a cult following for their unique status in the Japanese mobile gaming world: they're a company that was founded by women and hires women to make games for women. They put a lot of soul into their games. From the start, BMC is no different!
Tumblr media
"Could you have pulled a clean version of this image from the internet so it didn't have all the game junk" no. it's my tumblr and you get my screenshots.
I (with help from friends) overviewed the initial Break My Case announcement back when it dropped. You can read that here! I said in that post that I thought a "dark rhythm game" would be a really cool direction for the game… and that's more or less what we got! GO ME!!!!!
First: the game's presentation is fantastic. Super slick graphical design and just amazing atmosphere. The sound design of this game is incredible. Genuinely. Really, really, good. All the music is amazing—I'm not knowledgeable enough to say anything other than "IT SLAPS!", but it totally does slap. The illustrations for the cards are all wonderfully atmospheric in and of themselves, and are just a delight to look at on the homescreen with its chill background music. Even just navigating menus is a sleek, seamless experience. The live2d is well-done, although it clashes a tad with the art style for a bit of an uncanny look at times.
Tumblr media
The atmosphere! The atmospheeeeeeere!!!
Of course, the draw to this game is the characters and story, so let's jump into that. I'll admit right now that I read the story through a machine translation—I have aaaalmost enough Japanese knowledge to fill in the gaps, especially since the story is fully voiced, but I'm definitely not getting the full nuance of the story that someone fluent in Japanese is going to get. THAT SAID, after completing the prologue, I was definitely intrigued enough that I want to continue slogging through the MTL just to read more! There's a great setup, centered around the bar Aporia and its three modes—a daytime cafe, a nighttime members-only bar, and, secretly, a "fixer" service who'll help anyone with any problem. Our main character, a woman who was just forced to quit her job at a corrupt company, gets hired to replace Aporia's eccentric owner while he goes on a who-knows-how-long vacation. The owner also has the role of "tail"—as in, the tail a lizard sheds to avoid being eaten. If anything in the fixer service goes wrong, it's the owner who takes the fall and the blame. This hasn't come to mean much in practice yet in the (quite short) prologue, but it's a fascinating setup. The story promises to touch on themes of the threads that weave our lives together, how small meetings can lead to massive life changes, and whether any human being is truly replaceable, even in our modern corporate world where people are treated like cogs in a machine. According to a staff interview, there are a handful of references to Stand My Heroes in BreMai, but the games' settings aren't otherwise closely linked.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rough translation in alt text. The Aporia manager Ai may be the most mysterious, intimidating character, but he also beefs with a parrot the first time you meet him, so...
All the characters are staff at Aporia with various unique roles and background. The prologue just gives you a little bit of each of them, but everyone does show up, and they all have interesting dynamics with each other already. Ai, the stern manager, has some history with the MC that he refuses to divulge, and goes so far as to force psychologist Riku to agree to not look into it. The range of relationships among the staff run the gamut from the calm and mature friendship between fortune teller Kiho and art teacher Kyoya, to the unfaltering dedication of Yu to his ex-mafioso savior Tomose, to the ridiculous Takeru and Soyogu who spend their first appearance waking up after having gotten black-out drunk together the night before. My favorite dynamic of all so far is that of Kou and Mao—Kou is a playboy who insists he's not a playboy, and is introduced evading a woman by… asking the icy Mao to pretend to be his boyfriend so that she thinks he's taken and gay and leaves him alone. Which Mao exasperatedly agrees to, telling Kou that he's used up his allotment for this month which ohmygod how often does Kou do this. Kou if you're asking this guy to pretend to be your gay lover so often he gives you a monthly limit I think you might just have to admit you want him to actually be your gay lover, Kou, oh my god—
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rough TL in alt text. Kou is letting the implication do all the heavy lifting here. He technically never said he was dating Mao. Technically.

On to the gameplay. There's gameplay! Unique gameplay! Good unique gameplay! Oh my god, uncharted joseimuke territory! The main gameplay mode is a match-3 puzzle game with rhythm elements. As in other rhythm games, each song in the game is its own level, more or less. (Each character has two unique songs, and three songs shared with the other members of their unit.) You set up a team with cards you've collected from the gacha, which determine your power level and special skills. The "leader" of the team has to be the character whose level you've selected. The puzzle gameplay is a tile-swapping match 3—think bejeweled or candy crush—but the tiles you've matched are only cleared once a bar sliding across the screen hits them, clearing them in tune with the song. Everything cleared in a single swipe of the bar ups the combo counter. There's also a life system, where if the bar slides across the screen without clearing a single match, you lose a life… But the bar moves pretty slow. You're not likely to game over or even lose a single life any time soon. There are more difficult versions of the levels I've yet to unlock, so I'm sure the life meter becomes relevant then. There's also "auto" and "loop" features if you want to grind a level over and over for exp and items, but, of course, the computer can't score as high as you playing it yourself.
And, really, it's fun to play, so why would you want to!? The sound of matches clearing with the music is so satisfying and really makes you want to combo as high as possible. Once you've matched some tiles, you can't move them again, nor use them in a second match (eg, in a cross shape), so if you want to maximize your combo and make as many matches as possible with what's on the board, you have to think ahead about which matches you're going to make. The bar slowly crossing the screen adds a visual timed element that gives some urgency to putting all the matches together. It definitely feels like a game you can pick up an instinct for over time, which is super fun.
All in all, a really solid, enjoyable little puzzle game. It would be fun to play even without the promise of anime boys. Stand My Heroes is also a match-3, for the record, which is what really cements the two games as being part of the same series.
Tumblr media
Admittedly, the anime boy staring at you while you play musical candy crush is a little disconcerting.
The second gameplay mode is "Snap'n Spin", a… gameplay-lite mode that just puts chibi characters in random strange situations and lets you take pictures of them. The mode is explained to be a video game within the world of BreMai, so it's not even trying to be realistic or relevant to anything else in the game. Once you take your pokemon snaps of the boys, they get a fun little caption. You can save up to 40 pictures in your album. Other than being cute, the main way this mode interfaces with the rest of the game is that it's the primary way to unlock card stories for the cards you pulled in gacha.
This gameplay mode is... cute? I guess? It being so disconnected from the style and aesthetics of the entire rest of the game felt weird. The chibis are adorable, so it has that going for it. And I do like some of the captions you get on the photos afterwards. My favorite were the scenes you catch of a character drinking, and then the caption reveals their current favorite drink. That's a delightful detail for a game set in a bar. Mostly, though, this mode left me wondering "why?" ...And I imagine the answer is something like "because merchandisable chibi characters are a requirement for joseimuke games." This mode could've been anything so long as these cute, starry little dudes were in it.
Tumblr media
Urara here hated the drink and the caption revealed that, lately, his favorite thing is sparkling water. He's the youngest character in the cast, so I guess he hasn't grown into booze yet...
One last feature I want to mention is the jukebox. Like many games, BreMai has a music player that lets you listen to tracks from the game… But its music player is, genuinely, a fully-featured music player app with shuffle, repeat, lyric displays, and even background play that works when you're in another app or your phone is off. What! Wild! When I first learned a few days ago that BreMai had a built-in player for its BGM tracks, my first thought was "Well, what's stopping someone from downloading the game just to use the music player and never spending a cent on it? Wouldn't you rather have the songs on spotify so you at least get a pittance of ad revenue, in that case? It's more than nothing."
But having played the game now, I see what they did to prevent that, lol. You don't unlock the songs in the jukebox until you get an SS score on the song's level. Which, I mean, that's normal rhythm game stuff, of course. Can't fault that decision. But, as in other gacha rhythm games, your score in a level depends on the power of your team of cards, and the cards you get from the initial handful of pulls aren't gonna get you anywhere near an SS score without significant investment. So you're either buying in-game currency to buy upgrade items, more gacha pulls, or both. Of course, you can also put a bunch of time into grinding for upgrade items—they drop from levels. Gacha currency is harder to come by. So you're not getting songs in the player without actually playing the game lmfao. The character solo songs in particular (the ones with vocals rather than just instrumentals) also require you to build up rapport with that character—the game calls it "Nice". You build up Nice with them by playing their other songs and using their cards in levels. It takes 1000 Nice on a character to unlock their song. In my first day of playing, I was able to get one character to about 250 Nice, another to 200, and a handful more with a few points, so it builds at an okay pace. There's ways to pay to speed up the grinding for Nice and for upgrade items with things like level skip tickets. So, basically: you're not getting that music player to a useful state without investing either money or time, lmao. Is paying-or-grinding to get cool music you can listen to while not playing the game more "worth it" than the usual freemium game goals of better units, new in-game outfits, or prettier card illustrations? ...Honestly, maybe it is? It's novel, at least.
Tumblr media
All gacha rhythm games have the same card select screen, don't they. These were my cards' levels after my first day of play, and you can see they didn't quite reach a suggested score of "A", much less the maximum "SS".
But I do want to stress, the monetization is, for the most part, pretty easy to ignore. Nothing in-your-face. The button to go to the shop screen is a different color, but it's not flashing with an eternal indicator, it's not popping up at every second, it's just sitting there alongside all the other menu buttons. The game isn't shoving timers in your face at all times—there's a stamina meter, which is mildly annoying, but you get ten plays when it's full, and if you're just playing casually you're probably not going to want to play the puzzle game over and over enough to fully deplete that. I know the bar is on the damn floor here but Tokyo Debunker seriously made me realize how bad it can be with mobile game monetization. BreMai is freemium, yeah, but as far as dark patterns go, it's not egregiously bad.
So, the verdict: if you're a joseimuke game fan and aren't afraid to play a game that probably won't get an English port and doesn't even have a fan translation yet (which I realize is already counting out 99.99% of people), definitely give this one a try. See if you like the gameplay—it really is worth trying—and do check out the story if you've got the ability. Or just look at the pretty anime boys.

Dormarth - Day 105
Race: Beast
Alignment: Dark-Neutral
September 6th, 2024
Tumblr media
Many mythological dogs fall into a set of strangely similar tropes, even beyond just the idea of them having multiple heads, as observed in the Orthrus analysis. One that I find particularly interesting, though, has to be in their common connections to death. Likely stemming from how dogs were, and still are, seen as intrinsically connected to hunting, many dogs in mythology are connected to death, the spiritual realm, and many such things. We've already seen this with the Inugami analysis earlier this week, but another curious example, and a personal favorite of mine, has to be in the Celtic Wild Hunt's goodest boy, Dormarth.
While the Wild Hunt is a demon itself in SMT, its intrinsic connection to death and the afterlife makes it a very curious topic in connection to Dormarth, also known as Dormarch, a hunting hound that joins in during said hunt. Originating in Wales, Dormarth is a beast that accompanies the riders during the Welsh version of the Wild Hunt. The Wild Hunt itself is a common motif throughout many different European mythologies and cultures, with many cultures offering their own spins on the general concept. This, naturally, leads to differing figures throughout the recurring motif, and the Welsh version has its own fair share of unique ideas, with one of them being the collection of souls of warriors to join in on the hunt, and who else does that collection than Dormarth?
The games' recollections of Dormarth are somewhat inaccurate, from what I can tell- for the most part, they paint the dog as being a guardian of the Celtic version of hell, but most actual historical references of Dormarth seem to split that between many other concepts regarding death and the afterlife. In fact, we don't really know much about Dormarth, given that the dog only appears in one passage throughout old Welsh literature, being in The Black Book of Carmarthen. The name Dormarth is also rather controversial, as the original text is somewhat fragmented, missing a letter in the name that could be either Dormarch or Dormarth, both of which carrying wholly different meanings. To quote the only reference we actually have of Dormarth,
My hound is sleek and fair, The best of hounds; Dormach he is, who was with Maelgwn. Dormach rednose – why stare you so? Because I cannot comprehend Your wanderings in the firmament.
A lot of controversy has surrounded Dormarth for years, but that's beside the point. Dormarth, as a name, seems to roughly translate to mean an 'embodiment of death,' giving light to the idea of Dormarth being just that. Combine that with Dormarth's connection to the dead due to being in the Wild Hunt, a hunt made up entirely of spirits, and one can easily draw a connection between it and Cerberus or other such guard dogs of the underworld. On top of this, though, its connection to death may also be it guiding lost souls to the underworld, or even collecting dead warriors to join in on the Wild Hunt. Language is fun like that, no?
Given that its natural habitat is described as being 'among the clouds,' being associated with the Wild Hunt, it's commonly believed that Dormarth accompanies the Wild Hunt, and observations in the Black Book of Carmarthen by one John Gwenogvryn Evans in 1906 seem to also give a physical description of the hound as being a two-legged dog with swirling fish tails behind it. Its overall role is rather unclear, as I've gone over in extensive detail, but Dormarth does seem to play a rather interesting role in the Wild Hunt overall, whether it be a guardian of the gates of Annwn (the Welsh underworld) or a hunting dog that accompanies the Wild Hunt, to even one that collects new hunters for it. With all of that, though, how's it portrayed in SMT?
I love Dormarth's design, but given everything related to the dog, it's really hard to see where a lot of the elements came from. Like, come on, where's the fish tail? Where are the only two front legs? Why is she bipedal, and why is she a girl? As strange as it is for a Dormarth design, though, I do like how it looks. She is incredibly gender, and I like the spike collar- it plays well into the whole themes of death- and helmet, which ties her (though vaguely) to the Wild Hunt. Overall, a pretty good design, though not one I quite understand for the hound of the hunt.

(sources: nyt 2014, bryan ferry: 1976, 1979, maximilianmogg.de 2021, gerard way: 2005, sleek 2016, bowie: 1973, 1978, ama 2014, gerard way: 2014)
gerard way on style, authenticity, gender, british music from the 70s and 90s... and COSTUMES. that was just a primer on the topic i actually want to talk about, which is how different the outfits this past tour have been stylistically from anything gerard has PULLED FROM or DONE.
this entire run, 2022-23, the closest gerard ever got to wearing something he would've worn during the first period (01-13) was the when we were young shows. part making fun: the second night (the first was cancelled) they wore a replica of their revenge album run outfit with HEAVY old age makeup. part homage: night three, they wore something so reminiscent of colleen atwood's work that in conjunction with gerard's tour designer (marina toybina) saying atwood worked with gerard on something not specified and toybina not claiming this outfit as she usually would, led people to believe this was the work of atwood. which is significant because she designed the original black parade costumes!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(wwwy2, wwwy3, 2004, 2006)
every single other show was unique in some way. from the tshirts to loose jeans to short shorts to tight skirts to a nurse uniform to a full joan of arc get-up. this isnt to say they didnt divert from the "uniform" back in the day with other outfits -- but the new stuff either became the new regular or they were rare. they were always on theme. even beyond that, the wwwy looks are what people know them for. it's part anti-marketing -- no defintion, no statement. they just performed and people loved it. the only person to even publicize it is toybina, who just talked about the craft.
it's also part anti-glam aesthetically. for a decade, the same figures informed gerard's performance style. in evolving past The Past, he moves away from those figures. never entirely, especially not in artistic ideology. like you can see traces of ferry's idea of the authentic self interrupting expectations or bowie's evolution into softer adaptations of past selves -- but not as much as the hesitant alien look which was explicitly about that. looking at original glam rock style like bowie as ziggy stardust, there is an accentuation, drama, and single vision which defined mcr's revenge and early black parade aesthetics. those periods were gerard's biggest dedication to hair and make up until hesitant alien, which he describes as a return to glam.
looking at the tour vision today, it has none of these qualities. ive talked about how the outfits (mostly) arent highly dramatic or highly gendered, which is why i dont think calling it drag fits. esp on the drama point, that's a key aspect of glam missed. there's no makeup, no accentuation, no BIGNESS. the tour is marked by its long-range simplicity. when the drama comes, it's in the dirty and off-putting, not style. it's interesting that when way does act as a character, like the office worker or dracula, it's entirely physical like a stage actor not a singer. though those are just sparks. he doesnt "break" because it's just gerard as we know him.
one final thread to address here is the gender sphere. if gerard explicitly pulled from glam rock mcr 1.0 into hesitant alien, and he's mostly divorced from glam now... where is all this newfound gender presentation exploration coming from? from female archetypes (cheerleader, jackie-o) to theatrical gender neutrality (any of the body suits) to what wouldve been called "metrosexual" in 2006 (atlanta, nj2) to just a general feminine outfit (firefly, 8/9 of the 2023 leg) -- the artist has their source, meaning, motivation, sure. this step back from talking about anything is sooooooo genius for getting people to take what they want from the tour's artistic output. interpretation fuels discussion. people keep talking about the possible narratives of the albums. people keep talking about the constructed interpersonal narratives. people will keep talking about the mysterious narrative of this tour.
what people have taken from the looks of this tour is that they are a recontextualization of symbols gerard has always connected to -- one example is how cheerleaders went from an old failed pitch to the im not okay mv to revenge photoshoots to the blood and teenagers mvs. but unlike the wwwy outfits, he isnt using the symbols in the same way. it's entirely new that he becomes the exploited female figure he's attached to. the inspiration is the self. there's no avoidance. i think "foundations" had a lot do with the direction of the tour -- its self-reflection forming a new image, in both lyrics and sound, is exactly what the tour looks have been about. not Glam, not Post Glam... not mcr 1.0, not not mcr 1.0... making up new words for an old language to write stories not possible with just the old
