For the Future Reaction

I actually watched the episode on the day it released (thank you vpn!), but other things have distracted me from writing. Here is my second-to-last Owl House reaction!

Before the special

I have no self-control when it comes to spoilers so I spend the first day the special was leaked looking thru spoilers before promising myself to start avoiding spoilers. this turned out to be surprisingly easy for me. I don't use Tiktok or Twitter, and Youtube was very obliging in not recommending spoilerific videos (in fact, I suspect that Youtube just straight-up forgot that TOH was an interest of mine). the only difficulty was making sure to ban the right Tumblr tags

anyway, I learned that Boscha and Kiki were surprisingly the main antagonists, and that Luz's palismen wAS A CAT-SNAKE I KNEW IT! YES! I mean, the cat was unexpected, but I have been rooting for either bat or snake since the beginning, so this was nice

From the teasers, I learn that the people of the Boiling Isles were turned into puppets, so that explains what happened to them. the Collector is playing dolls with them I presume

Predictions for the next special

the next special needs to fulfill two requirements imo: the final climax that solves all the problems and completes the main themes; and a satisfying epilogue so we can say goodbye to all the characters. the problem is that these two requirements conflict with each other. if the epilogue is too long, the special would seem weirdly off-balance, with large chunks of the runtime having little to no conflict. but if the epilogue is too short, how are we supposed to process the show's ending? I guess the showrunners can try another montage...

anyway, predictions. first thing first, no major character is going to die, dear god, this is a children's show. At most, someone is going to sacrifice themselves and come back

I think that the Collector would be talked down at the climax, probably by Luz relating to them, really connecting to a troubled kid one last time

Belos would probably be defeated after the Collector. Luz going "eat this suckers" to Belos would be fun

then I guess Luz has a discussion where she finally accepts that she belongs to the Boiling Isles? or she could realize this in the lead-up to the Collector. I imagine that she would build a new portal and commute between realms (remember she mentioned in "yesterday's lies" that building the portal is easy once you know what to do, you just need a power source. like a certain star child...)

let's see, anything else... oh right! that in-between guy! they will probably be important to Luz's development (considering she's the only one they want to contact) but damned if I know how. maybe they are a lost titan who will reveal the secret Titan/Collector lore that will give clues on how to deal with the Collector?

I am guessing that Luz will meet up with Eda fairly quickly, for that early burst of heartwarming. I would love to see Camila and Eda interacting and bonding over Luz

I wonder how rigged the "new game" that the Collector want will be, and what will be the stakes. who will be King's best friend forever? control of the Isles? their lives? actually, judging by the misconception of King's intentions that made the Collector believe Belos, it might be over whether the Collector will go back to the in-between or not. it could tie into the loneliness themes

speaking of themes, this season is going to be about grief apparently. maybe they will show the Collector being sad over being the only collector? maybe even survivor's guilt? many possibilities

Fixes the plothole of Luz not being able to use glyphs in the human realm even when King was with her. They weren't his glyphs, they were the island's.

Hunter relaxes slightly with everyone else at the beginning of For the Future when Luz says she's okay after coming out of the portal. He's relieved she's okay, even wrapped up in his own head as he is

Belos lights up the Titan's opposite eye from the one the Titan has lit. The Titan has a functioning left eye but a dim right one, and Belos lit the right one. King has a crack on the left side of his skull, Eda has a grey left eye, Luz has a scar over her left eyebrow. All of the Flapjack tattoos are on the left side except for Hunter's, which is where his sigil was (or is, if they had just started developing that technology and hadn't removed it yet)

The palistrom shortage was not only from Belos taking palismen, but also using the wood to make grimwalkers

Oh no did he ask Hunter to kill the Selkidomus because he expected this grimwalker to be the last and he wasn't giving himself room for failure. He needed to complete his mission, and failure wasn't an option if he couldn't make more grimwalkers. Because he had to have Caleb in the picture.

The fact that the show itself says point-blank that Belos is genuinely delusional and his goals are self-serving (through the Titan talking with Luz)

King never saw the room full of Titan skulls in Edge of the World, so he's seeing it for the first time in Watching and Dreaming

Luz's scene of standing and watching Belos melt while he tries to talk to her perfectly mirrors the scene of ghost Caleb standing and watching Belos melt while Belos tries to talk to him. They have the same expressions, angles, shots. And it's flipped. The scene is flipped. It's literally mirrored. And she has a similar hair thing going on. A fluffy hair noodle.

Clearly a Noceda because of Thanks to Them, clearly a Deamonne from Watching and Dreaming, which also makes him a Blight, and he also gets Eberwolf with Darius because of course. If you include being a clone of Eda & Lilith's great-something grandfather AND being Luz's sister AND the fact that there may be a shared guardianship of Luz between Camila and Eda, which also includes Raine, he gets to be a Clawthorne, which also means he gets to be a Whispers. And let's not forget how he's obviously also a Park. If desired, for good measure, you can cite brotherly relation and tack on Porter as well. And don't forget the actual canon where he is adopted by the entire school as the resident cryptid

Hunter is literally a cryptid and I have been thinking about this for a very long time. I wish they got to talk about that more but they didn't, which means it's free real estate

The sheer amount of love and care baked into the finale. It's splendid. The hugs and kisses and words and actions and feelings

Eda and King both got mega evolutions. Then Luz did too

Making a stand against Belos at the site of the DOU. Paralleling prior shots, like looking over the Isles and talking about destiny, the parallels between Luz's Titan mega evolution vs Hunter's possession (there's quite a lot)

How they avoided the feeling of powercreep by keeping a lot of the actions very readable and down-to-earth. Even when they were fighting kaiju puritan with decay laser, there weren't world-shattering mega-powers. Everything was built on what we already understood. We got glyphs, we got Harpy mode and Beast mode and King's powers were heightened but they were still the same powers, we got Luz with her staff and Belos with his usual strategy, Raine fighting back in ways we already understood but also ways which meant more (like breaking their instrument). The archives collapsing and the Collector holding them up with ribbons while standing on the shooting star, we understand those powers because we saw them earlier, it made sense

While the archives start falling, Hunter zips toward Willow before stopping short when they stop falling. Hmmm now where have we seen something like that before. For reference I am talking about COTH

Amity using vines, Willow using fire. That's the reversal of their usual things. Amity used the fire spell in Adventures in the Elements, that was tough for her. Willow's got plants down. Hunter using ice. Gus flying around and levitating

King's own friend group/Like the idea and concept? What are your ideas?

I had this idea of an AU/Headcanon. We know Luz has her friend group, her own crew (Gus, Willow, Amity, Emira, Edric, Viney, Jerbo, Hunter, Barcus)

This gave me an idea. I had an idea of King having his own group of friends with kids his own age.

I had this idea for some sort of AU of King attending Hexide with Luz in a grade level with kids his own age. Maybe kids like Braxas or Usurper could be a part of King's friend group. I even had ideas of some OCs that could also be friends with. I decided to create young sibling OCs for some of the canon characters of the Owl House. For Cat...one of Boscha's posse members. I already created OCs that are Cat's younger siblings Drex and Nikki. Here is a link of a past reddit post of it. Amity DOES care about other people

        And again, to disprove the misconception that Amity never cared about others besides Luz;

        She literally quit Grudgby, a beloved hobby of hers that she was successful at, because she felt bad about hurting Boscha and Amelia, of all people; She doesn’t even like them as actual friends! These injuries were by accident, in a move that ultimately DID win them the championship- And this being Boscha, she seems like the intense kind of person who’d happily accept injury if it meant winning. But clearly, Amity doesn’t think that success justifies the means here, even if her teammates are okay with it.

        Amity did the right thing in freeing Luz from her Everlasting Oath in Covention. At this point, Amity definitely doesn’t like Luz, and isn’t doing anything to impress her- But she does this anyway, because it’s the right thing to do, and she recognizes that Luz, for all of her ‘cheating’, doesn’t deserve to lose magic over that. 

        We see Amity’s genuine patience and kindness with kids younger than her, such as Braxas- Because clearly she’s providing to them what SHE wished she could’ve had! Amity’s giving these kids a loving mentor and when a kid steals her hair tie, she happily negotiates with her instead of getting mad about it? Again, there’s nobody for her to impress here, especially not during Lost in Language, at a point where she still didn’t like Luz.

        Then there’s Amity extending an olive branch to Hunter, recognizing their solidarity as abused kids. At this point, Amity has confirmed her relationship with Luz and it is assured, she knows she doesn’t need to do anything to ‘earn’ it, so her helping Hunter is purely of her own kindness and altruism here. 

        Amity clearly has a very strong sense of right and wrong, of justice, that compels her to do what is right- She’s studious and principled, considers herself responsible for a lot of things, and is focused on morality. Of course, this is an ideal that is easy for people like Odalia and Alador to corrupt, as they turn Amity into a desperate stickler for the rules, who is unnecessarily cruel towards ‘cheaters’ and people who don’t perform well in the system, because she’s been taught to think it’s somehow their fault for not ‘trying hard enough’.

        But while this corrupted morality does cause Amity to pick a fight with Luz, Willow, and her siblings, who are harmlessly minding their own business and just trying to get by- She DOES learn and mature and grow, because believe it or not, Amity is an intentionally flawed and nuanced character who ultimately develops. Amity can let her feelings get in the way, but she DOES come around in the end- Amity doesn’t want to enter Willow’s mind to respect her privacy, but then recognizes that she has to in order to save Willow’s mind, and takes responsibility for damaging it in the first place.

        Amity is flustered and trying to avoid being around Luz, her crush- But she looks past the complicated feelings of her crush to help Willow and Luz. It’s true that without Luz, Amity might not have become the strong person we see today- But that’s because Luz is the catalyst for her growth, as someone who supports it, not Amity’s sole defining motivation. 

        We see that there’s a compassion to Amity that compels her to be kind, even before the presence of Luz; She feels guilt, and she does try to help in her own ways, like saving Willow from becoming their professor’s scapegoat in their debut. Obviously Amity is still capable of toxicity if she feels like her position is threatened, but that’s because she’s legitimately terrified of how her mother here. Amity is scared of what will happen when she isn’t the best (just like Hunter), especially when that position is revoked because of the arbitrary whims of her teachers.

        We see that Odalia can speak into Amity’s mind since her and Willow were friends, mind you- Even before the birthday incident! And Odalia is someone who can and WILL kill people for being ‘distracting’ friends to Amity, she straight-up tries to murder Luz for this, even after Luz has tried to be helpful and negotiate, and make good use of Odalia’s time. Odalia is a warmonger with actual blood on her hands, and so is Alador. 

        Amity’s fear for both herself AND her friends is completely valid here, because Odalia ultimately does deliver through on her threats, after Amity chooses to stand up to and challenge her! And even if Amity was wrong about how serious Odalia was… She’s an abused child, any of her fears are completely valid, and it’s disingenuous to blame her for that. Especially when Amity specifically buckled into her parents’ demands when they started threatening Willow’s future here.

        Amity is SUCH a compelling and fascinating character, as someone who is in recovery, as someone who’s anxious over her own future, and trying to figure that out for herself, as well her own identity and how to express it. And yet some of y’all have the nerve to simplify and reduce Amity’s entire character, development, and motivation down to her crush on Luz- But at least the shippers don’t make it worse by demonizing Amity over this.

        She is our canonical lesbian rep, an overworked child and trauma and abuse survivor who even flinches when Luz approaches her at one point… Give Amity some slack, and stop villainizing her for not going above and beyond to be the most perfect, shining moral example of exactly what to do, at all times; Odalia and Alador already do that.

This isn’t shipping related but all my Owl House peeps are in this section of tumblr so I'm posting this here anyway, I don't think I've ever really mentioned how much I love Braxas, he's such a little cutie pie and I just want to hug him, I love that "Yay!" is his catchphrase and he's so polite, like he has this deep menacing voice but he's just the sweetest little bean
