Review: âA God Buys Us Cheeseburgersâ, Percy Jackson Episode 5
**Spoiler Alert for the entire book!**
I would like to start this review off on the nature of adaptations and when to go astray, given the less-than-stellar dip in quality of episode 4. Inevitably, details must change from the source material, some things are unfilmable. The source material in question here is in first person, which leaves so much of the story outside the protagonistâs head unwritten.
Had this season been given, say 10 episodes, and worked to establish the side characters we watch fight and die in the name of the gods and their friends later down the line, no one would have complained. Characters I wonât name (but iykyk) that got criminally little âscreen timeâ during Percyâs POV in the later books, only to have incredibly tragic demises were sad enough. Now imagine if, assuming the Disney show can accomplish filming all five books, we got to see these characters grow for all five seasons.
The era of TV we find ourselves in treats filler as universally bad and unacceptable. Plopping down on your couch on a weeknight to watch an off-beat episode of that cop drama you love or that addictive doctor show, or teen romance, that didnât require your full attention all the time because every scene was important to the plot doesnât happen anymore. An episode that was funny or charming or a romantic little side quest putting the characters we love in interesting circumstances is now far and few between. It still told the grand story, even if it didnât service the grand plot. Thatâs the nature of television.
The filler everyone complains about is when itâs uninteresting, contrived, and very clearly for no other reason than to pad the runtime. Taking a C-list monster and giving her an unnecessary monologue and a need to âhuntâ that wasnât in the book? Boring filler.
Cutting back to camp and really selling us on how Luke is an awesome dude looking out for all the younger kids so he can twist the knife later? Good filler! Heâs the main villain of the series (besides you know who) and we got so little of him in the books because it was limited to Percyâs POV. Build his relationships with Chiron, Beckendorf, Silena, Clarisse, the Stolls, and the other demigods he ends up turning Dark Side with him. Make him the lovable everyman because he really did love the kids. He hated how the gods treated them. Die hard book fans, if the writers really went for it and understood why his character does what he does, would have loved it.
Now onto the episode that I was hoping and praying would be more like episode 3 than 4.
So. They included the snipping of the thread. And Percy wasnât there to see it, nor was it at all as creepy and foreboding as it should have been. I kept waiting for them to flash back to Percyâs experience in the river with the naiad and they didnât. Maybe they ran out of under-water effects budget. Percyâs âmaybe my dad does love meâ tonal whiplash is disappointing since 90% of the river scene was lost (and he didnât even come out of the water dry).
Aresâ casting isnât what I pictured but it fits really well and I canât place why. His features donât really feel *godly*. Him starting Twitter wars is wonderfully petty and absolutely in-character. He just acts like an unhinged jerk, not the God of War, as funny and entertaining as it is.
It is also disappointing that Annabeth is the one that snarks to Ares and not Percy, because his attitude is what eggs on their big fight on the beach while she and Grover actively try to tame Percyâs temper. The episode, to this point, is *fine*.
Everything after⌠I was laughing at the absurdity. The absolute deadpan confusion on their faces when âWhat is Loveâ starts playing like the mixer accidentally edited in a track from their Spotify. The set designers forgetting that âWaterlandâ is a waterpark, not just an amusement park. Grover being unrecognizably sly and confident in front of Ares when he wasnât supposed to be there at all. Some of the dry attempts at humor, like Percyâs âI think I heard this at an orthodontistâ line, not in itself funny, but his dry delivery was.
Groverâs ongoing conversation trying to probe Ares is hilarious, even if thatâs not Grover on screen. Itâs not bad, itâs just⌠not Grover. Percy and Annabethâs jaunt and awkward exposition and line delivery in the Tunnel of Love is also *fine*. Them hyperfocusing on the Fatesâ string this episode is another *interesting* change and so is Percyâs second attempt to sacrifice himself in a scene thatâs way more dramatic than it needed to be. Boy is all teary-eyed convinced heâs going to die here in this trap when, in the book, he was trying to get Annabeth to move her behind because she was petrified by robotic spiders. She has her come-to-Jesus moment here, which was sorely needed for this version of her character who, up to this point, had very little depth.
And there are no robot spiders. Did they not have the budget for robot spiders? Is Percy not allowed to have the rest of his powers? Were they too afraid of giving Annabeth a phobia? Did they just desperately need to inject some angst into this scene? All of the angst, to the sound of heartbreaking violins in a score that also went way too hard. Nobody seriously thought Percy was going to bite the dust here, did they?
Overall, this is better than 4, but not as good as 3, if I had to rank them. If you pretend this isnât supposed to be the first season of at least five, Grover likely doesnât seem like a problem. His whole arc, across all five books, is gaining self-confidence and courage. He canât grow into a brave Lord of the Wild if he starts his journey back-talking the God of War.
Annabeth not having her entirely useless panic attack over the spiders and forcing Percy to have to save them was the main takeaway from the original trip to Waterland. Sheâs not perfect, but this flaw is also entirely outside of her control, itâs in her blood as a child of Athena. Itâs ridiculous that someone as smart and strong and cunning as she is can be petrified by spiders â but thatâs the point.Â
The commentary on how the gods, as a family, constantly backstab each other was interesting. Not sure that this episode was the best place for it, but itâs nice that it exists.
The changes that were made were entertainingly confusing. It was not what I ordered, but I didnât hate what I was served. Ares is easily the best part of this episode, but it is glaringly obvious that this show, whether by budget or the Powers That Be, is allergic to action scenes.
Hereâs to hoping they saved all their eggs to drop in the basket of the big climactic beach brawl, because this is still an action-adventure series, not just adventure.

Your favorite female fictional character?
This is a very hard and cruel question T.T
I chose my top3 female characters from my originals and fanfictions.
(from left to right)
1. Veronica Gyuradinovich from Tulips in the Cemetery {original}
Her surname is croation variation of my surname. She is a margravine in the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the 2370s. The story is a steampunk. She is stubborn and doesn't want to be married, but she falls in love with a grave-digger while a serial killer is killing people in Budapest. The hierarchy of rank, her injury and the killer make their lives more difficult. She inherited many traits from me: the intellectual, the emotional instability, the curiosity, the family situation, the attitude to the world. She's a rebel, but she's got morals and virtue.
2. Edahlia Sorensen from Blood of Yggdrasil {original}
She is a much-suffering character who first served the Empire, her fiancĂŠ was the Prince, then she saw the oppression and cruelty therefore committed treason. She was still needed to maintain the Empire, so she was not killed, but she was imprisoned for 10 years, where she was subjected to the most extraordinary tortures and brainwashed. As soon as she got out the King wants her to help, while the people want to see her as a rebel again, but she doesn't want to play either role. And in the meantime, his ex-fiancĂŠe shows up.
3. Natalia Szendrei from Just a drink {original}
OMG, I love her * - * She is very funny and clever and me :D She likes drinking, drawing, her job is chemist engineering which was mine too. I think she is the more open version of me.
Her story is that after a drunken night out, she suddenly starts seeing all men as women. And I love the connection between her and Robi, her staff member. (and alcohol...)
4. Scarlette Cowen from Conjuction {Twilight fanfiction}
She's been on my mind most of the time lately. I like her acceptance, her openmind, her wanting to help everyone as a doctor, she's not so naive, she's more realistic, resourceful and tenacious. She fights for herself, for her loved ones, lives in a modern world and yet she has to look back hundreds of years to become a witch. She know herself and knows what she want. I like the harmony between her and Carlisle, they complement each other.
5. Charlotte Bradwick from Legacy of the War {Peaky Blinders fanfiction}
She is a true survivor and friend, she went to the first world war after his platonic love and friend, where she lost a leg, but she was able to recover, return to home, Birmingham and enter the alcohol market in partnership with Shelby company. She lives her life and when the opportunity comes, she doesn't miss it, but she's not a pusher and manipulator however she can be cruel sometimes. She loves and wants Tommy, but knows she can't put pressure on him. She is very special.
6. Ludovica Siskovich from The devil doesn't sleep {Harry Potter fanfiction}
Ludovika was a good girl who was misunderstood, persecuted, and then captured and exploited by the Germans during the World War. Dumbledore was the only one who tried to help her, but he took her to Hogwarts but only to give her in the clutches of Tom Riddle. She was making great progress, Tom was increasingly exploiting her obscurity through his manipulations. She become a villain.
Sorry that I could't choose one :( I'd like to tell you about all my OCs in time :3
Who should I tell you about next? Ă Annabeth Outlaw - Marvel fanfiction Ă Ithya Lestrange - Harry Potter fanfiction (Golden trio era) Ă Vease Sargen - House of the Dragon fanfiction Ă Letisha Carnahan - The Mummy fanfiction Ă Nemezis - The Boys fanfiction Ă Lilith Blackburn - Wednesday Ă Wilma Hermann - D.Gray-man fanfiction Ă Ivy Lex - Now you see me fanfiction Ă Lysandra Harlowe - Game of Thrones fanfiction Ă Others in my original stories (Ă Sinthea Schmidt - Marvel fanfiction (I know, she is not an OC, but but I made a lot of changes to it compared to the comic) Ă Faith Fraser - Outlander x Poldark crossover (She is not an OC too, but she never grew up, soâŚ)

Luke Castellan
So, I have read the first 5 books of the Percy Jackson saga earlier this summer and I'm reading the next 5 right now, and I have some Thoughts about Luke Castellan.
â ď¸THIS POST MAY MENTION STUFF THAT IS UNPLEASANT TO SOME PEOPLE, READ WITH CAUTIONâ ď¸
1. Child grooming/being a pedophile
I'm sorry, what? Child grooming? Really?
From Google, the definition is:
"Child grooming is befriending and establishing an emotional connection with a child, and sometimes the family, to lower the child's inhibitions with the objective of sexual abuse."
That is not, even remotely, what Luke did! I saw some people saying he did, but?? He ran away with Luke, Thalia and Annabeth and it was never said, not once, he tried to do so with Annabeth. He was raising her, a 7 y/o running away from her family, and she liked him, not the other way around. Now, obviously, the age difference is a bit much, but really, let's see the context:
Annabeth ran away from home, at 7, she was traumatized and deprived of a normal childood, do you really blame her for mistaking admiration and friendship for love? Plus, again, Luke never reciprocated her! Thalia said that when they continued to run away after meeting his mother, he looked distraught and paranoid and Annabeth could not see it: she thought everything was like before, she was a child and innocent and couldn't see clearly the reality of things!!
Luke was never a pedophile nor a child groomer, Annabeth got a crush on him and that's all.
2. "Do you still love me?"
Now, I've seen this line threw off a lot of people. I didn't think too much about it, because right after Annabeth says "Like a brother". But, let me ask, what would you do? Luke was dying, after hosting inside him a thing worse than a demon for several years and almost destroying the world, and in front of him there were Annabeth, Percy and Grover. Percy hated him, and that was clear as day; Grover was probably very very sad for him, but they didn't have that much of a connection and then, there was Annabeth.
Annabeth, the only one that hoped he would return to the good side, the girl he protected so many years ago and swore she was his family.
It was a legit question. He didn't love her, but dying knowing that at least one person in the world doesn't hate you is better than dying knowing everyone hates you.
3. Being manipulated vs being evil
Oh boy. I've seen a lot on this, people defending him no matter what and people bashing him no matter what.
For what it's worth, I think the truth lies in the middle. He was evil, because he had a rough past and everything, and he didn't know any better than to hurt people, probably. Then he was manipulated by Kronos, and he just got worse and worse.
He died as a hero, killing himself to prevent Olympus' destruction. Many people say it doesn't make up for everything he did, but then again, how much stuff did he really do? He was manipulated and Kronos took the complete control, he probably did many bad stuff, but it's important to notice the worse was done by Kronos. I believe that if he was a minor villain, he could've had a redemption arc.
4. Being human
Now, this final point may be influenced by other pieces of media I saw and my philosophy class, but anyway.
I believe every single demigod could've been Luke. Why? Well, they all had a rough childood and good motives to hate the gods, but most importantly they are all human. Humans aren't born good or evil, it all depends on the context in which they live. And humans have one of the most important things: the possibility to choose.
We choose, everyday, to be kind or evil. Luke choose to be evil, because of the context in which he had lived and what he had seen.
Percy himself said he hated the gods; Nico even hated Camp Half Blood; and what, don't the others have good reasons to turn their back to Olympus too?
Luke was convinced by Kronos because he was full of hate, fear and anger. He was human, he failed to see that the gods weren't completely bad, and he failed to see that the Titans would've put the Earth in an era of chaos and destruction.
Idk there are my two cents on the topic, I really like Luke as a character because he is very well written in my opinion.
