i have an idea for zayne,,,, so, as someone who is genuinely terrified of needles (like, even seeing one makes me nauseous) how would he react to that when MC/reader has to get their annual vaccinations or bloodwork ? like, bc we've only been seeing him for 6 (?) months at the beginning of the story. how would he react to finding this out ? like how would he help walk us through it and comfort us n stuff ? idk when i imagine it, it feels like it could be super fluffy and comforting

“Hey, are you alright?”

Wait — how did she get in this position again? The only sensation she feels in her legs are the trembles in her calves, and she’s almost certain that she’s starting to taste bile at the back of her throat. At any other moment, the amount of strength she’s putting into remaining calm right now would be sufficient to put down at least three wanderers. 

Yet, here she is, barely registering what Zayne is saying as she eyes the needle in his gloved hand in fear. 

She was perfectly healthy just a couple moments ago, Zayne swears. Lively as can be she always was, with the most perfect shade of crimson painting her cheeks when she kissed him hello. Sure, it had been a hectic morning for the doctor, and this is considered yet another appointment but Zayne sees this almost as a reward. He walked with a different spring in his steps today, knowing his fifth patient of the day is the same person who has cured the deepest wounds in his soul within the short couple months they’ve been together. The appointment today isn’t meant to be anything serious, just a simple vaccination - one that he’d administered about a hundred different times already (and he hasn’t even poked her with the needle yet) so it concerns him when she’s already losing the warmth in her skin. 

“You’re pale,” Zayne states as a matter of fact, a crease in between his brows as he walks from behind his desk to kneel in front of her so that he is able to take a closer look at her. He then pauses, drifts his gaze back to the needle in his hand, then back to her. He makes a calculated assumption - the way she lost the colour in her face as soon as he held up the prepped syringe, a sharp needle poking out at the end of it, all ready to prick into her skin. His girlfriend is afraid of needles.

He pauses, then decides to take a different approach – one that is usually reserved for his younger patients. “Hey,” he says again, his voice now even gentler than before as his gloved hand takes her chin so that she’d look at him, stealing her attention from the sharp object. His other hand then is hidden behind his back and out of her view completely. “Remember the new cafe that just opened a couple minutes from the hospital?” He asks, smiling kindly to her, determined to keep her mind at bay. “I managed to take a peek at the menu. Don’t worry, I didn’t try anything. Promised you we’d try it out together, didn’t we?” 

Her face is still anxiety ridden, but she affords a raised brow at his question which she then nods to. Weakly, she replies, “What do they have?” The words are forced out against the lump in her throat.

“Well, they have your usual selection of pastries. But I also saw that they make Stawberry Matcha Lattes too. Greyson would not stop talking about it, I’m quite intrigued, if I’m being honest. ” He chuckles, rubbing his free hand to massage the shoulder of her bare arm that had previously already been prepped and sanitised for the injection. 

This causes her eyes to stray from his kind and smiling face, but he simply calls for attention back. “Na-uh, look at me, pretty girl. Can you do that?” And when she does, he praises her. “Good girl. Now, can you tell me about your plans tomorrow morning? Would you be able to squeeze in a lunch with me? We can visit the cafe together, if so.” He sees her begin to think of her plan tomorrow, recalling whatever occasion she may have had tomorrow reserved for. “I do have to meet Tara tomorrow morning to return the book I’d borrowed, but I reckon I’d be done before eleven.. Captain Jenna says there might be a meeting for the reported cases of Wanderers in the other city but I think if she doesn’t confirm by today, it would be cancelled - Ow, Zayne!”

In the midst of her recalling her plans, he’d taken her distraction as an opportunity to finally administer the injection. Again, it wasn’t that thick of a needle, so he knew it would not be as painful as she had been scared it would be. Within two seconds, he has a Snowman-themed plaster bandaging the tiny wound. 

“All done, you did very well, my love.” He smiles, pressing a kiss to her temple as he finally stands up. “I even gave you a plaster from my special collection.” His grin only grows, knowing well it came from the pack of plasters she had gifted him. He thought it was overwhelmingly endearing, knowing well that he would never be scant of bandages (given his occupation and all) but she so carefully picked a pack one out for him — said the design of snowmen and flowers reminded her of him. 

“Oh,” was all that she could simply say, mouth slightly agape as she looked at her bandaged arm. “It’s done?” She asks, looking up at the standing doctor as she remains seated, finally feeling the sensation of her legs again. He chuckles, finding his heart double in size at the relief in her child-like innocent eyes. “Yes, all done.” He simply cannot resist planting another kiss on her head. “

So, I assume you’ll be able to make it to our brunch date tomorrow then?” His hands, now already rid of the gloves, cradles her face as she looks up at him. The giggle that escapes her causes his hold to tighten ever so slightly, a love struck look in his green eyes. “Anything for my favourite doctor.” She kisses the palm of his hand. “Thank you for sharing your special plasters with me, baby.”

“Anything for my favourite patient.”

NGL: Stuff like Brambleclaw being a terrible namer is like. really fun but also kinda hits with the 'he;s not some meglomaniacl villain hes just a shitty guy'. like. you could see squirrelflight finding that really endearing. IDK if this is some mastermind shit, or if i'm just reading wayyyyy to into this, but i like how you give characters that are pretty bad dudes very humanising qualities. Especially when they're silly/cute. Kinda reminds you that like. theyre like. a person. well. cat but yknow. and they chose to do bad shit, with influence from their past, rather than being inherently terrible. 👍

YEAH MAN, that's what I'm SAYING

Abusers, ideologues, and other terrible people are not masterminds. They aren't born evil. They're not inherently smart OR stupid. They can love, they can be funny and polite, they do things they believe are justified and want to be good people. They don't think of themselves as villains.

Evil isn't complex. It's really, really not. I feel like that's the #1 cause of confusion when I get a question like, "Why does this person do this malicious act, when it's bad/inconsistent/mean?" The answer is always simple;

They wanted to control someone.

They wanted something and didn't mind who they hurt.

Spite and short-sightedness.

Look for anything deeper and you will not find it. Heroics are complex, being a good person is ongoing and changes over time. We're in a constant state of growing. Malice is childishly simple; it feels good to get what you want.

With Bramblestar especially... it always goes back to what I said here, when talking about the idea of an Evil!Bramble. He's a person, and you ruin everything that's so interesting about him by stripping away that nuance. Squilf and Bramble loved each other, truly, and legitimately. He can be charming. He can be nice. He still hurts her. Reconcile with this.

He is not wiser for what he went through, as a child. His pain doesn't make him better. Man's just a jerk... that's it.
