That sounds like the most made up name ever
hey! i came across your blog and saw that you said pro-aba dni. i hope this is okay to ask but i was wondering if i could get your perspective on aba. if you need/want to stop reading now because the topic is upsetting/annoying/anything else, then i totally get it and you don’t need to go further or respond. i wanna start off by saying that i only know what i was taught, which is that aba is a good thing. anyways i worked as a special education teacher at an elementary school where a lot of my students had rbt’s with them for all/most of the day. in our case, a lot of those rbt’s were there to prevent students from harming themselves or others. i will say that i have certainly seen some questionable aba being done (there were several different companies providing services and their procedural differences could be glaringly frustrating). but none of my students were capable of articulating how they felt about their rbt and/or aba as a whole so i was looking to see why people are opposed to the practice. i mean i can see how making a child change their behavior as a way to fit into “normal” society (a stupid concept bc normal is bs) can be troubling, but i could also see that some good can come out of it, as far as harm reduction goes. coming from a psych background i can see how teaching kids to adjust their behavior in order to keep them safe is a good thing. but if the practice as a whole isn’t good then do you know of an alternative that is effective? (as far as reducing harm/injury goes.) i apologize if this seems extremely ignorant of me but i am genuinely curious to get an autistic kid’s point of view. especially if they have personal experience with it, but even if they don’t. since this is relevant to my career field, i don’t want to go about thinking that aba is effective if it actually is quite the opposite. i’m also not looking to glorify/make excuses for aba if it’s a bad thing. sorry for the novel of an ask. i appreciate you taking the time to read this. again, don’t feel like you have to answer if this is a stupid or pointless thing to talk about. i’m not looking to waste your time. thanks again.
(TW FOR ABA, ABUSE, TRAUMA, ETC.)
I was in ABA when I was 11 or so. The goal of the therapists was to make me suppress my emotions, and mask. I was forced into overstimulating environments and was not allowed to leave, I was yelled at, I was taught I am not allowed to say no to anything, etc.
The experience was traumatic, and I still struggle with a lot of panic attacks and nightmares related to it.
And no, I'm not quite sure of a way to reduce harmful stims. I have quite a few harmful stims too, but from my experience ABA made them a lot worse, whilst also making my mental health horrible. Sometimes finding alternatives to those stims are good. I tend to bite the insides of my mouth a really severe amount, and chewies don't fix the problem, but they are helpful for harm reduction sometimes.

Számomra a...

Friend how did you discover BTS? I dipped my toe into it through my younger sister a few years ago but didn’t fully immerse myself until quarantine.
soooo it's a little bit embarrassing, haha. my friend kayla discovered them a few years ago, and asked if i was interested in getting into them too, but i said no at the time.
(fun fact: i distinctly remember watching the dna music video when it came out, but i did Nothing about it lmao. i only remembered bits and pieces of it for AGES—there were a bunch of guys singing in Not English, tons of color, one guy saying "i LOVUSS, somethingsomething true LOVASS," a guy stepping aside to reveal Another Guy who did a hushing finger)
i actually got into them in october, because cookie run kingdom, the mobile game i've been sinking all my time into, was doing a collab with them! i managed to get all seven of them before the event ended (JUST BARELY, it was a little scary, i didn't know if i'd get hobi), and kayla has been a HUGE help as i navigate the literal mountain of content the guys have put out over the last decade 😅

TL;DR: I am glad the ABA you have seen has focused on minimizing harmful behaviors. That is worthwhile, necessary, and I completely support therapies that focus on reducing harm on a child.
The issue becomes: Who is defining what is a “harmful behavior,” and who is deciding what methods are justified to prevent those behaviors?
This is my favorite article discussing the problem with relying on people trained in ABA specifically in making these decisions:
A longer discussion below the cut.
As a serious answer to your question:
Are you familiar with “Conversion Therapy”?
People who have experienced ABA draw explicit parallels to Conversion Therapy.
And there is a reason.
One of the prominent developers of ABA, Ole Lvar Lovass
… Well, I’m going to quote the above Wiki page.
UCLA Feminine Boy Project
See also: Conversion therapy
Løvaas co-authored a study with George Rekers in 1974 where they attempted to modify the behavior of feminine male children through the use of rewards and punishment with the goal of preventing them from becoming adult transsexuals. The subject of the first of these studies, a young boy at the age of 4 at the inception of the experiment, died by suicide as an adult in 2003; his family attribute the suicide to this treatment. Despite the follow-up study (which Løvaas was not involved in) writing that the therapy successfully converted his homosexuality, his sister expressed concerns that it was overly biased as "he was conditioned to say that", and she read his journal, which described how he feared disclosing his sexual orientation due to his father spanking him as a child as punishment for engaging in feminine behavior, such as playing with dolls.
The issue with ABA does not explicitly have to do with the methods used on children, but the reason these methods are used on children, which impacts the selection of methods.
ABA is intended to create compliance in divergent children: Make them act “normal,” because the people in charge of ABA believe being “normal” means being healthy and happy.
Survivors of ABA, of which I am not one, argue that this is not true.
Being a self-dx Autistic who has studied ABA - including, incidentally, at the bachelor’s level in a USA college for a Community Psych degree - I am a fierce advocate against the philosophy that permeates the field.
People hating on ABA is so interesting to me only because that same energy is usually not carried over towards any other field of mental health, despite the fact the all fields of mental health have the potential to be abusive, even traumatic. I mean .. do you even know what a psychiatric ward is?
Anyway, I work in childcare I have seen both abas and ots, I see them all the time, and frankly I actually can't tell the difference between the ots and the abas. I've even seen kids have both an aba and an ot. What I do see is that the therapist is trying to minimize harmful behaviors and encourage better ones.
