"Hi."

Eddie blinked. The trailer had fallen into an empty quiet so suddenly it was jarring. He'd been re-living a memory, a peaceful one, but now Wayne and his humming were gone, the tv dark and silent.

There was a girl sitting on top of the washing machine, legs crossed at the ankles.

She was dressed like the winter version of Molly Ringwald's character in The Breakfast Club, a chunky knit sweater tucked into a brown corduroy pencil skirt, honey brown hair braided over her shoulder.

"Uh. Hey." His voice felt too loud, like they were kids at a sleepover, trying not to wake the parents.

"This is a nice place." The girl murmured, turning her head to take in more of the living area. She had a mole under one eye, more dotted down her throat like disconnected constellations.

Moths fluttered around the orange kitchen light, all sorts of novelty mugs lining every available surface, lace curtains patched up with scrap flannel covering the window next to Eddie's head.

He wanted to scoff, scratching at his jaw with a learned defensiveness. He was seated at the small card table they ate dinner at some night, back when he was younger and Wayne had wanted to give him something he'd not had before.

"Not many in this town would think that." Not many dressed like her, anyway.

She laughed, and something about the curve of her upper lip was familiar. "I suppose they wouldn't. But it's nicer than what I had, a banquet table full of empty chairs? A bunch of rooms we weren't allowed in? It was like living in a museum."

His lips twisted in thought, and he looked around again. At the water damage on the roof and the stain left by a stray pancake when Eddie was still learning how to flip them. Curtains made out of old sheets and a couch with sagging cushions where Eddie had fallen asleep with his head in his uncle's lap more than once.

"You have to hold on for a little while, okay?" She told him, kicking her legs so her heels thudded gently against the front of the washer. She was staring at him with dark eyes, and something in her expression made his chest ache. "You've still got a little bit of time."

(Later, a younger girl will walk through the door, head shaved and eyes too old for her face. She'll be confused to see them, and her voice will be soft and steady when she asks who they are.

Eddie will introduce himself, the girl on his washing machine won't.

The younger will call herself El, and tell them it's time to wake up. She'll take Eddies hand, palms warm and rougher than he'll expect, and suddenly he'll hear beeping. The murmur of voices he thought he'd lost.

El will reach for the girl on the washing machine, and she'll smile, head tilted sadly. "I'm too late for you to save, Supergirl."

She'll turn her smile on Eddie, brighter and still achingly familiar. He'll know where he's seen that smile before, and he'll have questions when he wakes up. In that moment, though, he'll feel bereft. Like he's lost a friend before he's known them.

"But he's still got plenty of fight left in him.")

Save it For a Rainy Day

He's so little. 

That's the only thought Wayne has, over and over again. He's so goddamn little. With lank, limp hair, all snarled and knotted, matted. Unkempt. Dirty. Dark circles under his sullen eyes. He's small, but at the same time he looks every bit of a hardened fifty-five, at all of seven-years-old.

He didn't look like that the last time Wayne had seen him. 

And Wayne is sick that he's deteriorated to this point, in just two years time. At five, he had been a happy, wild boy. All snips, snails and puppy dog tails. 

With a loud mouth and big, round cheeks.

Al swore he was fine, that they both were, on the rare occasions when he'd call after losing Betts and Wayne had believed him. Until the social worker was on his front steps, Eddie standing there, head bowed, so utterly serious.

"Do you want me to find someone to try and comb it out, or would you like to shave it and start over?" Wayne asks, and Eddie just shrugs. Still not talking, still buried deep within his shell.

Wayne's not going to decide for him. Thinks it should be his decision, but knows it can't stay like this either, even if he doesn't have it in him to start dragging a comb through it. He knows that'll hurt, and he can't do it to Eddie. Won't. 

"When you decide, you let me know," Wayne says, hoping he'll decide sooner rather than later.

It takes three days, but Eddie finally comes up behind Wayne on the couch, and taps him on the shoulder, and makes the motion for shaving his head.

"Okay, I'll get you an appointment," Wayne tells him, because he wants to do this right, and not leave Eddie with the memory of Wayne shaving his head in the kitchen of the trailer. Maybe that's cowardly, but he'd rather push that off on a professional. 

Eddie is sitting on the little wooden board the hairdresser placed over the arms of her chair to make him taller, the hydraulic lift hadn't even been enough to get him where she needed him, and he somehow still looks little.

She gently, oh so gently, takes the clippers to Eddie's hair, shaving off strips, as she talks him through each pass. Eddie seems fine with it, there are no tears, but no smiles either.

This was the right call. A beauty shop, not a barber. Wayne's own barber does just fine on his own hair, but wouldn't have been so delicate with Eddie, and right now, Wayne's pretty sure his boy needs a soft touch.

There's another boy in the chair next to Eddie, probably the same age, but he's so much larger, and more animated. Studying every move of her hand as she barely trims anything off his thick head of hair. He doesn't need the booster board, even if Wayne suspects he's younger than Eddie.

"Nanny Louisa, can I get my haircut like that?"

She laughs, "Steve. Your mother would have both of our hides. We all have very strict orders for your haircut and you know it." 

"Aw, man, it looks so cool," Steve whines, and if Wayne isn't mistaken, that's Richard Harrington's boy. And if that's true, there's no way he's leaving here with his head shaved, that's for damn sure.

And then, as if it were a miracle, Eddie smiles. It's small, faint, barely there. But it's a goddamn smile, aimed at the other little boy that is watching as Eddie's hair falls down all around his chair and onto the floor.

The Harrington boy doesn't win, and only gets a trim, but Eddie has straightened up on the board. Not nearly as withdrawn as he was when they entered the shop.

Maybe shedding all that damaged hair feels like a new start. Wayne sure hopes so, because they're gonna need all the help they can get.

When he's all brushed off, and the plastic cape removed, the hairdressers each hand Eddie and the Harrington boy a coupon for a free ice cream cone at the shop down on the corner. It's a perk for being good in the chair, and they both earned it today.

Eddie clutches his coupon in his little hands.

"Do you want to save that, or get it now?" Wayne asks, and Eddie looks torn. That isn't the look Wayne wants on his face, so he quickly amends his question, "Or both? You can save your coupon for a rainy day, and we can still get ice cream now," Wayne offers.

"Really?" Eddie says, looking so hopeful, and it's the most beautiful word Wayne's ever heard in his whole life.

"Really," he reassures, "you save it until you want to use it. And I'll buy, today."

"Can we go get ice cream, too, Nanny Louisa?" the Harrington boy asks, and she looks reluctant, but finally nods. She couldn't let him get his head shaved, but ice cream, that's probably a much more doable request.

Wayne sits at the table with Louisa and makes the world's most uncomfortable small talk, as the boys sit at another table together, and jabber back and forth. Well, Steve is doing most of the talking, but Eddie, his sweet Eddie, has said more in the past thirty minutes than he has in the past week, and Wayne doesn't care who has gotten those words out of him, he'll be grateful. 

When the cones are gone, both boys appear at the side of the table, "Eddie's coming over tomorrow to swim," Steve announces. 

"Oh, is he?" his nanny asks, teasing Steve, and Wayne smiles. 

"He is. His uncle will bring him," Steve says with a confidence that things will always go his way in life, and Wayne hopes that rubs off on Eddie, just a little bit.

"I will?" Wayne teases, and Eddie meets his eyes, and Wayne nods. "If it's okay with Miss Louisa, I think that could be arranged."

"I don't know how to swim," Eddie admits on the way home, and Wayne laughs.

"Maybe you shouldn't have made a swimming playdate then, kid," Wayne teases, and Eddie laughs, a small quiet laugh. But it was a laugh. Wayne heard it.

"Yeah," Eddie says, and then he's quiet for a stretch, "could you teach me?"

Wayne isn't so sure that's his area of expertise, but he supposes he could try, "Yeah, I can try."

Knowing Eddie would be far too embarrassed to go to the public pool, Wayne takes Eddie out to the swimming side of Lover's Lake.

Wayne, not sure the last time he's even been in shorts, wades out in the water in his cut-off jeans, surely blinding the boaters a mile out with his white legs, as Eddie walks in beside him.

And Wayne teaches him, always staying within an arm's reach. And Eddie swims. It might not be the fancy strokes that the Harrington boy can surely swim, in his private pool with his private swimming lessons. 

But Eddie's doing it, and Wayne feels like maybe, just maybe, he's finally done something right for the kid today.

Eddie's laughing, and splashing, a quick study, and Wayne lets him paddle around for as long as he wants, until the sun threatens to sink beyond the horizon. 

Once back on shore, Wayne wraps him up in a towel, just one from the house, and gets him back into the truck.

"I'm starving," Eddie says.

"The downside to going swimming, I'm afraid," Wayne answers, but swings by Benny's Burgers on the way home, getting them both a burger, fries and a milkshake. Ice cream twice in one day is fine, Wayne's pretty sure, since Wayne's celebrating the first good day they've had since Eddie got here.

Anything the kid wants, forever, Wayne will do his best to make happen.

In the morning, Wayne brings Eddie by Melvald's General Store, to let Eddie pick out a beach towel from the rack. Eddie combs through them, so serious as he checks out the options: Star Wars and Barbie and Huckleberry Hound.

"Garfield!" Eddie finally declares, and Wayne supposes that's the one. 

"Garfield, great choice," Wayne says, taking the towel to the counter so they can pay for it. So Eddie won't be embarrassed bringing a fraying old towel from home. So he'll have something new, and fun, that he picked out all for himself. 

Wayne probably should have washed it first, but he's not that organized, and Eddie'll live. Wayne pulls off the tag and hands it over, and Eddie hugs it to his chest.

Pulling into the circle drive at the Harrington's is weird, to say the least. He's never set foot on the property, and never imagined he ever would. But, Eddie's brought a lot of changes, and if Eddie likes this other little boy, and he's kind, Wayne will be polite and make his boy happy in any way he knows how.

That evening, when he picks Eddie up, he's tired, and a little sunburnt, but rattling off information about his new friend and all their grand plans for the summer vacation.

And as time always goes, that summer flew by too fast, and before Wayne knew it, years had passed. The boys drifted apart as fast as they became friends. As kids do. By high school, Wayne hasn't heard the name Steve Harrington from Eddie's mouth in years. 

But that summer, that first summer, Wayne will forever be grateful for him. For Steve Harrington, Garfield beach towels, and more ice cream cones than he could ever begin to count. To swimming, and fishing, and playing in the backyard. 

To the little kid that made his boy smile again.

And when Steve Harrington, now grown into a man, shows up on Wayne's doorstep, Eddie's denim vest clutched in his hands, filthy and blood-stained, Wayne lets him inside without a word. 

Wayne takes one look at him, and tells him to wait there. 

He has to dig, but he finally finds Eddie's piggy bank in a cardboard box that he'd packed from the remnants of the trailer, and pulls out the bottom plug. Change falls out, clattering onto the desk. 

But inside, there's a slip of paper. Folded to fit, and dirty from spending so much time hanging out amongst the coins.

Wayne clutches it in his hand, and when he presses it into Steve's palm, trading him for the vest, Steve looks down at it, his eyes wet and red-rimmed.

Wayne starts, "I don't know if you remember-"

"Of course I remember," Steve cuts him off. 

"Well, I thought today might be that rainy day."

Steve laughs, and sniffles a little, both at the same time.

"This ice cream shop has been closed for years," Steve says, but he's finally smiling, just a little. 

Eddie's not here to do it himself, not here to coax out that smile, so Wayne's repaid the debt for Eddie himself. 

"Yeah, well…" Wayne trails off.

"But it is, you know," Steve says, "that rainy day. So, thank you."

And months later, Eddie shows up on Wayne's doorstep again. Dirty, his hair matted, and eyes downcast. Thin, worn to the bone, and as silent and stoic as he had been at seven. Wayne asks no questions. The answers don't matter right now. Instead, he pulls on him, hugging him tight, welcoming him home.

They've done this before, and they can do it again. And Wayne's grateful to have the opportunity. He was so sure he'd never see him again.

Then, after Wayne's gotten Eddie settled, and Eddie is standing in front of the bathroom mirror, combing out his own hair, Wayne excuses himself, heading for the kitchen to call Steve Harrington.

Wayne tells him to bring ice cream.

Bathroom Confessions–Steve Harrington

Trigger Warning: Slight mention of attempted rape.

"These seats are too close!" I complained in a loud whisper.

"Dude, these seats blow!" Steve scoffed as he stuffed his face with popcorn. I reached over and grabbed a handful.

"Then don't watch the movie," Dustin sighed.

"We want to watch it," I shot back.

"Then watch it!"

"Shh!" Some guy behind us yelled. This led to the rest of us shushing him back.

"Whatever you do," Dustin said, softer this time, "don't. go. anywhere."

"Fine, Dad," Steve elongated. I giggled as I playfully punched Steve's arm. Dustin didn't think it was funny. He rolled his eyes and walked away. Steve and I calmed down and tried to watch the movie.

"I'm lost," I whispered. "What's happening?"

"I have no idea," Steve said, stuffing more popcorn into his mouth.

Ugh, Steve's mouth.

I wanted his mouth on my mouth. So badly. But, sadly, he'd never put his mouth on my mouth. He doesn't feel the same way about me as I feel about him.

I've been in love with my best friend since seventh grade after he stood up for me when Molly, Grace, and Louisa were bullying me during PE. I fell for him even more when he showed up on my doorstep after my date to the eighth-grade dance stood me up.

Sure, once we got to high school he started to pull away. He eventually came back. During sophomore year, I was staying after school to help tutor some kids.

One day, I was waiting for my mom to pick me up after a session and one of our football players tried to force himself on me. He dragged me to his car, threw me in the backseat, and tried to take advantage of me.

Steve was walking out of basketball practice and heard me screaming for help. He instantly started running toward the car. He pulled the football player off me and his anger took over. I had to pull Steve off of him before he went too far.

"Steve! Stop!" I screamed as I scrambled out of the car. My legs were shaky and I fell to my knees. Me gasping in pain made Steve stop. He got off of the football player and ran to me.

"Are you alright?" He asked gently.

I smiled when he hesitated to touch me. Instead, I tucked into his chest. He instantly wrapped his arms around me.

"I'm sorry," he whispered. "I should've left the locker room sooner. I should've. . . I'm sorry."

"It's not your fault," I whispered back. I leaned out of our embrace and looked up at him. "Besides, you got him off of me. You saved me, Steve."

He shrugged, trying to act as if it wasn't a big deal. We both knew it was.

"Can I ask for one more favor?"

"Anything," Steve said instantly. He cleared his throat, trying to recover. "What is it?"

"Will you take me home?"

After that day, things changed. Steve went back to being the Steve I knew and fell in love with. He started rushing out of practice so he would be waiting on me to get out of my tutoring sessions. Once we were both done, he could give me a ride home.

A couple of weeks later, he found out that Tommy and Carol had been spreading the rumor that I had willingly gotten with that football player. As soon as Steve found out, he walked away from them.

I gasped, thrown back into the present when Steve gently put his hand on my arm, leaned over, and whispered, "You okay, Y/N?"

"I'm gonna barf."

Steve tossed the popcorn aside, grabbed my hand, and dragged me out of the theater. My stomach did multiple flips as Steve led me to the women's restroom. We burst through the door, dropping to our knees. We emptied our stomachs into the mall bathroom. When I was pretty sure my stomach was empty, I emptied it some more.

"How you feeling over there?" Steve asked between coughs.

"Probably about as good as you are," I sighed. I sat on my butt, sliding back until I hit the wall. I leaned my head against the cold bathroom wall and took a few breaths. "Do you think that crap is out of our systems?"

"I don't know," Steve sighed. "We could test it out."

"How?" I scoffed.

"Well, it was a truth serum, right? So, ask me a question."

I thought about it, knowing the question I was dying to ask him. This was my chance.

"Have you. . . ever been in love?"

"Yep," Steve said a little faster than I wish he had. "Nancy Wheeler. First semester, senior year."

My heart sank when he mimicked a gunshot. "She is such a priss," I tried to scoff like it didn't matter.

"Turns out, not really," he sighed.

"Are you still in love with Nancy?"

I felt like he hesitated but not that long. "No," he said.

"Why not?" I asked.

"I think it's because I found someone who's a little bit better for me. It's crazy. Ever since Dustin got home, he's been saying, "You know, you gotta find your Suzie. You gotta find your Suzie."

"Wait, who's Suzie?"

"It's some girl from camp," he sighed, "I guess his girlfriend. To be honest with you, I'm not 100% sure she's even real. But that's not–that's not really the point. That doesn't matter. The point is, this girl, you know, the one that I like, it's somebody that I. . . never would have expected. And I don't even know why. Maybe cause Tommy H. would've made fun of me or. . . I wouldn't be. . . prom king. It's stupid. I mean, Dustin's right, it's all just a bunch of bullshit anyways. Because, when I think about it, I should've been hanging out with this girl the whole time. First of all, she's hilarious. She's so funny. I feel like, this summer, I have laughed harder than I have laughed in a really long time. And she's smart. Way smarter than me. You know, she can crack, like, top secret Russian codes and. . . You know? She's honestly unlike anyone I've ever even met before."

I took a shaky breath as the tears streamed down my face.

"Y/N?" Steve spoke up. I sucked in a breath when he knocked on the stall between us.

I could hear the nervousness in his voice when he said, "Y/N, did you just OD in there?"

"No," I said shakily, "I am still alive."

My breath got caught in my throat when Steve suddenly started sliding under the stall. "The floor's disgusting," I tried to warn him.

"I don't care," he said as he sat up, leaning against the stall. He wiped his hands on his pants, before reaching over and gently draping his arm around my leg.

"What's going on in that pretty little head of yours?" He asked, squeezing my calf.

"Nothing," I said under my breath, looking away from him.

"Come on," he whispered. "Talk to me, Y/N."

"That girl you were talking about," I whispered, still not looking at him, "she's lucky a guy like you is into her."

"Yeah, she is," he sighed.

I took a shaky breath before asking, "Does she know how you feel?"

"I don't think so," he said. "I keep trying to tell her, but I can barely get the courage. As soon as I get it, she walks in with her beautiful smile and her angelic voice. The minute she walks into the room, I forget what I was going to say and my courage turns into butterflies."

"Sounds like you're really in love with her," I whispered. Steve let go of my leg and wrapped his arms around his knees. He leaned forward and smiled at me.

"I am," he whispered. "I am extremely, desperately, stupidly in love with this girl."

I copied his position and leaned my chin on my knees. I tried to stop the tears but it was useless.

"She is a really lucky girl, Steve," I said, my voice breaking. "You should tell her so she knows."

"I just did."

I snapped my head up and looked at him with wide eyes. I studied him, trying to figure out what he meant. He just smiled as he watched my wheels turn. He slowly scooted closer to me as he whispered.

"How did you not know?" He teased. "I thought I made it obvious when I protected you from Grace, Molly, and Louisa. Or when I took you to our eighth-grade dance after Mikey stood you up. Or how I left Tommy and Carol to start hanging out with you more. Or when I pulled Eric off of you and beat him until I broke every bone in both of my hands. Or how every day I do whatever it takes to protect you."

I held my breath as Steve was now inches from me. He dropped his voice even lower, "How did you not know?"

Steve leaned in and pressed his lips to mine. I was too shocked to respond. I snapped out of it and instantly started kissing him back. Our lips moved in sync as we got as close to each other as we could.

Steve reached up and gently cupped my cheek in his hand as our lips moved messily in sync. I broke the kiss and leaned my forehead against his.

"I love you too, Steve," I whispered. "I am extremely, desperately, stupidly in love with you."

He let out a small chuckle as he pressed his lips back to mine. As our lips started moving faster than our first kiss, Steve grabbed my hips and brought me over to him. I straddled his lap, reached up, and began running my fingers through his hair.

Steve broke the kiss and smiled up at me. He reached over and tucked a piece of hair behind my ear, his hand lingering. He gently rubbed my cheek with his thumb.

"I don't want to forget this," I whispered.

"You won't," Steve said instantly. "And if you do, I'll remind you."

I got off his lap and sat next to him. I sighed as I leaned my head on his shoulder. I felt my stomach flip when he leaned his head on mine.

Neither one of us spoke as we sat in silence, listening to each other's breathing. We looked over when the door was roughly pushed open.

"Okay," Dustin sighed angrily. "What the hell?"

"Dustin!" I giggled.

"Henderson!" Steve yelled.

"You found us! Now you hide and we'll count. 1. . . . 2. . . 3. . . Hey! You're not hiding! That's cheating."

"Wait, what?" Dustin stuttered. "What's wrong with you guys?"

"When I say 'Dustin', you say 'Henderson'!" Steve laughed loudly.

"Can we go?!" Erica yelled. Dustin and Erica turned around and left the bathroom. I sighed as I stood up and brushed off my disgusting uniform.

"Hey," Steve grabbed my hand before we could leave the bathroom.

"Everything okay?" I asked as he pulled me into his chest. He leaned down and pressed his lips softly to mine. Before I could kiss him back, he broke away.

"It doesn't matter how much drugs those Russians gave us," Steve whispered, "I don't think I will ever forget our bathroom confessions."

Louisa Henderson was a good sister, an okay student, and a great friend. She’s been friends with her next-door neighbor Steve Harrington for as long as she can remember, and though the two of them were different they had always stuck together. Everything is the way it’s always been, until Steve starts dating Nancy Wheeler, and the distance between them grows larger than Louisa is able to bridge.

Nicole Davis has known what her life would look like since she was a little girl. She would go to Harvard, date some pretty smart boy, get married, and live the white picket fence life that her mother picked for her. It all made perfect sense to her until she met Nancy Wheeler and developed feelings that would never fit in her picture-perfect life. 

When Lou and Nick both get hired to work at the pizza place in the new Starcourt mall it seems like the break they both desperately need. That is, until they get tangled up with the employees of Scoops Ahoy, and find themselves in the bowels of the mall being tortured by evil Russians.

It sure is one hell of a summer job.

  Ethan didn’t know what to think about having kids. He was very devoted to his job, it was taking most of his time, he didn’t have time to properly date, not to mention take care of a child.

He always thought he would be alone. Just like Naveen. He saw his mentor go through his life, no wife, no kids. Just Ethan, who started treating the old man like a father.

Then Claire stepped into his life. Or, more specifically, she barged in, busting down his walls, taking over his mind and heart. He was glad that she did. At first she frustrated him. Then, she intrigued him. As time went on, he realized that he not only wanted her, he needed her, like the air he breathed.

Their work didn’t get in way of their relationship, she joined the diagnostic team and she stayed in his heart forever.

Their relationship was growing stronger, eventually he proposed and they got married. He was the happiest man alive, not quite sure why she chose him. He knew how many people saw her and wanted her, yet she chose him.

“Claire… what made you fall in love with me?” he asked her one evening, they were lying on the sofa in their living room, two glasses of wine on the table.

“What do you mean?” confusion bloomed on her face as she turned around to face him. He took her hands in his, hers, small and delicate, in his bigger ones, more damaged by years of work.

“I just… you could have anyone. Literally anyone. I saw how those two boys were looking at you back when you were an intern. It just made me wonder, why exactly did you choose me over them. I was rude to you and to others, grumpy and closed off, I’m eight years older than you…” his head fell slightly, his cheeks pink. She took his face in her hands, making him look at her.

“Ethan, you know that I only want you, right? You are brilliant, your knowledge still amazes me, you care about your patients, you care about things you love. It’s the most important thing in the world. Yes, you were rude, but I strongly believe that it was a result of those walls you put up around yourself. Yes, you are older. So what? It just means you are more experienced.” She smirked, biting her lip. She captivated him, one look at her and he forgot what he was doing, where he was going, where he was. He took her in his arms and carried her to their bedroom, passion coursing through them.

They did talk about having children. The first time was when they were testing the machine at the hospital. He told her then that he didn’t think he could have children, because he didn’t want to abandon them and leave them to themselves because of his work.

Next time they talked about it was right after he proposed. They were laying in bed, spent from their previous activities, her head on his chest, his fingers stroking the skin on her arm.

“I don’t know. I would like our children to actually know what I look like. And I don’t think it would be possible as of right now.” He said softly. She looked up at him, her face sincere.

“I know what you mean. I too think it would be difficult to manage both our work and kids if there were any. Don’t worry about it now.” She kissed his jaw softly and snuggled into him, his arms tightening around her.

As time went on, he got more and more accustomed to the idea of a child in their lives. They were married for two years when he picked up the discussion again, they decided to try, both of them excited for a new addition to their small family.

After two months of trying, she broke the news to him. Euphoria took over his emotions, he started crying, hugging her close but being mindful of her stomach.

They made sure that she stayed away from any infectious patients to minimize the risk of her falling sick.

He took good care of her, helping her with morning sickness and spoiling her with about anything she desired. He felt helpless, looking at her struggling with vomiting and fatigue, knowing there was nothing he could do to take it away from her, all he could do was be there for her. And she made sure he knew she appreciated it, knowing him and how his mind worked.

She was sleeping, her back killing her, when the tiny noise woke her up. She sat up slowly, extending with her hand to the other side of bed, trying to reach for Ethan only to find him gone. There was light coming through the bathroom door which were not closed all the way. She stood up slowly and carefully, trying not to make any noise and approached the door. What she saw in there broke her heart.

Ethan was sitting on the floor, his hands covering his face, his whole body shaking with sobs, rocking back and forth. He was crying, some sort of hysteria taking him over. She rushed to his side and placed her hand on his shoulder. He looked up to see his wife, concern on her face. He quickly wiped his tears off his face, trying to conceal the fact that just mere seconds ago he was falling apart.

“Hey, what is it? What’s the matter?” she asked, trying to kneel down gently next to him. He saw that and shook his hand. Oh no, he would not let her sit on the floor. He stopped her, stood up and gathered her into his arms, carrying her back to their bed.

“Nothing. Don’t worry about it.”

“Ethan, that was clearly not “nothing”. You were having a panic attack. Talk to me. We are supposed to talk, remember?” she smiled softly. She was sitting on the edge of the bed and he was standing before her. Suddenly it seemed as though his knees gave up under him, he fell to the ground. She caught him by his shoulders, steadying him. He leaned forward and buried his face in her stomach, kissing her belly gently. She stroked his hair with her fingers.

“I worry about not being a good father…” he mumbled into her stomach.

“What? Ethan…”

“No, just… hear me out, okay?” he interrupted her, their eyes meeting for a short moment. She nodded her head slightly before he started talking.

“I didn’t have an amazing childhood. My parents were always absent, both too preoccupied by work. I didn’t have a good father figure, until Naveen that is. He is more of a father to me than my own. I have no idea how to be a father. I don’t know what I’m supposed to be doing, how to behave, how to take care of a child… There are only a few things in this world that I’m sure of. My love for you is the biggest one. I’m also sure that you will be and exceptional mother to our child. No doubt about that in my mind. But I also know that I have the potential to be the worst father ever to exist. How can I be a father if I never had anyone to show me how it is to have a father in the first place?” He broke down again, his tears soaking her sleeping gown, his face buried against her belly again. “I don’t know if I’m good enough to be a father”. His voice cracked, arms pulling her closer to him. She leaned forward, placing her hands on the sides of his face to make him look at her.

“Ethan. Look at me, Honey. I know that you’re scared. Honestly, so am I. I don’t know if you realize, but I too never had a child.” She pinched his cheeks softly, both of them laughing at her words.

“I know that your relationship with your parents is difficult. But it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t mean that you will be a bad father. I actually think you will be an amazing father. I saw you with kids, Ethan. I saw you taking care of them at the hospital, you are the sweetest person around them. Almost as sweet as when you are alone with me.” She winked, his cheeks reddening. “You have Naveen. You know what is right and you know what is wrong. I know you, Ethan. I know that you are a perfectionist, you won’t stop until you get it right. You are going to be a father that does his best to make sure our kids want for nothing. Besides, I am here. You can count on me; you know I won’t let you be a bad father.” She teased him, tugging gently on his earlobe with her fingers. “You should also know that I won’t let you think so negatively about yourself. We’ll learn to do this, together. As always.”

He pressed his lips to hers, his hands flat against her back, pushing her closer to him, their faces on the same level due to the position they were in.

“Thank you, Love. I needed to hear it. You always know what to say.” He relaxed a little, laying her back down on their bed and wrapping himself around her, her back against his chest.

“That’s just because I know you, Ethan.” She kissed his hand, hugging it close to her heart.

Six months later Louisa Ramsey was born. Ethan has never seen a more beautiful baby, she was so strong, just like her mother. He spent as much of his time as he could with her, his incredible wife by his side through it all.

He didn’t know why he was so scared in the first place. Right now, he couldn’t imagine anything more amazing than coming home to the love of his life and their daughter, hugging them tightly, smiling widely.

He could hold his whole world in his arms.
