The alarm buzzed quietly on my phone just a soft vibration under my pillow. I blinked blearily at the screen, barely making out the time: 6:32 AM.

I groaned softly.

“Turn it off, babe,” Chris mumbled beside me, voice low and gravelly, thick with sleep. His arm found its way around my waist, pulling me in.

“I have to,” I whispered. “It’s the big day.”

His eyes fluttered open, barely. “The cupcakes?”

I nodded.

He rolled onto his back with a sigh, rubbing his face. “Remind me again why we’re waking up at this hour to give three toddlers sugar.”

I grinned, slipping out of bed and tugging on his worn Red Sox hoodie. “Because they’re only little once. And they’ve been counting down for a week.”

Chris sat up, his hair an adorable mess. “Yeah, Teo asked me yesterday if he could have a dinosaur made of cake.”

“You told him no, right?”

“I said maybe,” he muttered sheepishly.

“Oh God,” I laughed, padding barefoot down the hallway.

The kitchen was dimly lit by the soft under-cabinet lights, and I opened the fridge slowly, as if being quiet would somehow stop the kids from sensing movement and springing to life like tiny goblins. Three cupcakes sat on the middle shelf vanilla with pastel sprinkles and single flickering candles already stuck in. I carried them carefully to Chris, who was now waiting in the hallway with his phone poised to film, barefoot in grey sweatpants and a sleepy smile.

“You ready?” I asked.

“As I’ll ever be.”

We tiptoed to the nursery the one room in the house that had never known peace after 6 AM. But this morning, it was still. Quiet. I could just make out the rise and fall of three tiny chests in their little beds, lined up side by side like an adorable toddler military operation.

Chris nudged the door open slowly with his foot, and I mouthed, “You start.”

He began softly, voice low and warm.

“ Happy birthday to you… ”

I joined in quietly.

“ Happy birthday to you… ”

Teo stirred first his wild curls sticking up in every direction as his sleepy eyes opened.

“ Happy birthday dear Giselle, Teo, and Louis… ”

Giselle’s eyes snapped open at the word birthday. Her little nose wrinkled, and she sat bolt upright.

“ Happy birthday to you… ”

Chris held the cupcakes aloft like some magical offering. The tiny flames flickered in the dark room, casting a golden glow over their sleepy faces.

“Is that cake?” Giselle asked, voice husky with sleep but suspiciously alert. She was her father’s daughter sharp, even at dawn.

Teo blinked, rubbing his eyes. “Is it my birfday?”

“It is,” I whispered, setting the tray on the toy chest near the beds. “You’re all three today.”

“Louis is still asleep,” Chris whispered, crouching near the bed.

Our smallest triplet was still sprawled out like a starfish in his dinosaur pyjamas, mouth open, soft snores filling the room. Nothing could wake that boy.

“Shall we let him sleep?” I asked.

“More cake for me,” Giselle said, already crawling toward the cupcakes.

Chris scooped her up easily, settling her on his hip. “Not until Louis wakes up. We blow the candles together, remember?”

Teo was climbing out of bed too, dragging his blanket with him like a cloak. “I want the one wif the blue sprinkles.”

“You picked that one yesterday,” I said, ruffling his curls.

Chris gently patted Louis’s tummy. “Hey, Louie Bear… it’s your birthday, buddy.”

Louis groaned, turned his face into the pillow, and muttered something that sounded suspiciously like, “No thank you.”

Giselle leaned over and poked his cheek. “Louis. Cake.”

Chris chuckled. “That might do it.”

It didn’t.

Eventually, I sat beside him on the bed and gently scratched his back the way he liked.

His little brows furrowed, and he peeked one eye open. “I was dreamin’,” he mumbled.

“About what, sweetheart?”

He yawned. “Penguins.”

“Well, the penguins will still be there later. Right now, there’s cupcakes.”

That finally did the trick.

Within a minute, all three were gathered at the toy chest, each staring at their candle like it held the secrets of the universe. Teo reached for his.

“Wait, wait,” Chris said quickly, raising his phone again. “Alright guys. On the count of three, blow out your candles.”

“Make a wish!” I added.

“Can I wish for cake?” Giselle asked.

“Sure,” I smiled.

“Alright,” Chris said, “One… two… three go!”

The candles went out Teo’s first, Giselle’s a second later, and Louis’s after an extra determined puff that nearly sent his hair flying back.

“Nice job,” Chris grinned, then turned the camera on me. “Mummy made these.”

“Thanks, Mummy,” Teo said, grabbing his.

“Love you, Mummy,” Louis added sleepily, mouth full of frosting already.

Giselle just grinned, cheeks stuffed.

I looked at them frosting-covered faces, pyjamas askew, and hearts full. The room smelled like vanilla and baby shampoo and birthday magic.

Chris wrapped an arm around my shoulders and kissed the side of my head.

“Three years,” he murmured.

“Can you believe it?”

He smiled down at them. “Not for a second. Feels like yesterday you were waking me up at 4 AM swearing something felt different.”

I laughed. “I was right.”

“You were always right,” he said, squeezing me.

The rest of the day was a blur of balloons, dinosaur hats, chaotic FaceTime calls with grandparents, and wrapping paper explosions. We had a bouncy castle in the garden, a full table of snacks, and enough sugar to power a small city.

Chris was an absolute softie. He wore a birthday crown that Giselle insisted on. Teo made him crawl on all fours pretending to be a T-Rex. Louis only wanted to sit on his lap and eat cheese puffs.

By late afternoon, I found Chris in the kitchen, cutting up fruit like a man on a mission.

“You’re doing snacks now?” I asked.

He gave me a look. “We have three toddlers. If we don’t balance the cupcakes with strawberries, we’ll pay for it at 2 AM.”

I leaned against the bench. “You’re really good at this, you know.”

He glanced at me, smile soft. “At cutting fruit?”

“At being a dad.”

His eyes lingered on mine. “You make it easy. I mean that.”

I reached out, lacing my fingers through his. “We make a good team.”

“Even when Louis peed on me mid-nappy change?”

“Especially then.”

We shared a quiet laugh, and he leaned in, pressing a slow, sweet kiss to my lips. Just for a second, it was silent. Just us. No shrieks, no juice spills, no flying building blocks.

Then

“MUUUUMMMM!”

Chris winced. “Giselle?”

“Sounded like it.”

We both moved, practically in sync, laughing as we went.

That night, after the party, after the mess, after three baths and six bedtime stories and Teo’s very specific question about whether dinosaurs had mums who tucked them in, we collapsed into bed.

Chris pulled me close, arms around my waist, chin on my shoulder.

“I don’t want them to get any older,” he said.

“Same.”

“But I also want to see who they become.”

“Also same.”

He kissed my shoulder. “Happy third birthday to our tiny gang.”

I smiled sleepily. “We should make this a tradition. Cupcakes in the morning.”

“Next year, I’ll bake them.”

I turned to look at him. “You’d bake?”

He nodded, grinning. “I might even use frosting and sprinkles.”

“Well then,” I yawned, snuggling in, “I’ll let you wake up first.”

He chuckled, kissing my forehead. “Deal.”

In defense of Charles de Bonchamps, Vendée royalist, who spared the life of 5,000 Republican soldiers

I already made a post about Bonchamps last month, talking about the exaggeratedly impressive list of his war wounds during the Vendée insurrection. He was one of those many young noblemen born in the northeastern region of France, which showed the most resistance against the Republican Levée en masse. Like La Rochejacquelin and Charette, Bonchamps was dragged into the counter-revolution by local residents who demanded that he led the insurgent troops, since under the Ancien Régime, only noblemen had access to high military office. And like La Rochejacquelin and Charrette, he died at a young age (32), fighting for a lost cause.

The difference is that no dedicated and complete biography has ever been written about him. The information I was able to compile on him comes from the Mémoires de la marquise de Bonchamps, his wife, Kléber's recollections of the Vendée war and more general works such as Dupuy's La noblesse entre l'exil et la mort.

To sum up his military career, Bonchamps joined the Régiment d'Aquitaine at the age of fifteen or sixteen, where he quickly rose through the ranks. This battalion was sent to India to fight the British armies during the American War of Independence and he almost died of the scurvy on the way back. At the start of the Revolution, like all other future leaders of the Vendée rebellion, he didn't believe at all in the idea of turning against the Republican army and winning, but the local farmers left him no choice, perhaps going so far as to threaten him with death if he didn't join their movement (this is just a supposition, as such thing already happened to Charette who was forcefully dragged from under his bed where he was hiding from the farmers). As a good commander, he managed to achieve a sufficient number of victories to maintain troop morale, most notably at the battles of Vezins, Beaupréau and Thouars. Kléber who respected him a lot said he was “the one the Rebels cherished most, and to whom the greatest talents were attributed”.

However, it is not his military exploits that remain in the modern memories, but his goodness, which showed in the most critical moments when he had the upper hand or could have shown himself cruel and vengeful.

A small example: in Fontenay, on May 25, 1793, he spared a Republican soldier who then immediately tried to kill him. This resulted in a shoulder wound that doesn't seem to have healed very well, as it reopens several times and he apparently refused to rest for too long.

But yeah. Beyond his military qualities, Bonchamps is a true Catholic, very reluctant to kill his adversary when he has the choice to spare him, and very committed to the values of forgiveness.

This brings us to the Battle of Cholet, on October 17, 1793. The Republican forces, led by several officers including Kléber, numbered 26,000 men. On the other side, the Vendéens numbered 40,000 men. Despite this advantage in numbers, they were less well-trained, less well-disciplined and less well-armed, and as you may expect, it ended with a disaster: 8,000 of them were killed (compared with 2,000 Republicans), and they fled as far as Saint-Florent-le-Vieil on the edge of the Loire river, taking 5,000 Republican prisoners with them.

General Lescure's wife recounts:

“Monsieur Cesbon d'Argognes, an old Chevalier de Saint-Louis, led them. He was a very tough man, and had nine of [the Republican prisoners] shot on the way who had tried to escape. We couldn't drag them any further, nor could we get them across the river.”

Indeed, it was impossible to cross the Loire river with 5,000 prisoners. And the Vendéens were absolutely enraged: in addition to learning that 8,000 of their men had died during a battle they lost, they received news of the deplorable state of General Bonchamps, who was seriously wounded and would soon die. The Vendéens locked the Republican prisoners in the village church, surrounded it with cannons and demanded reparations and revenge for Bonchamps' death to come. Despite their officers' reluctance, the crowd demands blood and prepares for a massacre.

Meanwhile, Bonchamps is informed of what's going on and is horrified.

Before I continue, let me remind you that this man is at the brink of death, has no more shoulder or elbow because of how much it has been wounded, and is bleeding to death through his stomach. The decision he is about to make will be his last act before dying.

To one of his officers, he immediately orders mercy for the prisoners, adding: “My friend, this is surely the last order I will give you, so give me the assurance that it will be carried out”. As if in an action movie, the men start running towards the church, shouting “Pardon! Pardon! Bonchamps orders it!”

Republican reinforcements arrive much later, at around 3 a.m., to collect their prisoners.

What happened, then?

Several articles I found online (of no scientific or historical value) mention that the Republican officers, embarrassed by this epilogue, would have urged the pardoned soldiers to lie and not talk about Bonchamps' gesture. I don't think this is true, because as soon as Kléber found them, they spontaneously told him what happened:

“He found there pieces of cannon from the boxes, a lot of grain and other edibles, finally six thousand patriot prisoners, who announced to him that they had escaped death, at the prayer of Bonchamps who, expiring as a result of his wounds, had asked for and obtained their pardon.”

Also, still from Kléber's recollection, it seems that the Republican soldiers didn't take advantage of this opportunity and let the Vendéens cross the Loire river to flee.

Bonchamps' last words were: “I served my God, my King, my country. I knew how to forgive.” He died the following day and was buried in Varades. There is now a statue of him inside the church where those events happened, to commemorate his act of mercy:

A sad rumor has it that Republican soldiers later violated his tomb to recover his head and display it as a trophy in Paris, but I've never found any concrete proof of this, and I think it's just a belated story to give the Republicans a cruel image.

Probably far too much propaganda for Antoine-Charles-Louis de Lasalle, and I sincerely apologise if it's too much, I got very carried away:

The INSANE career progression of this man. Captain at 21, Squadron Leader at 23, Colonel at 25, General de Brigade at 30, General de Division at 32. All of this despite having to resign and reenlist during the Revolution.

He joined the army at 11 basically because he was being too much of a menace to Metz, so his dad sent him off to learn to beat people up professionally.

Reenlists in 1794 after being part of (probably) the military committee of the Section des Piques. By 1795 he's already back at his pre-Revolution rank of lieutenant.

Supposedly charmed his way out of captivity:

At the end of July 1796, Lasalle, imprisoned in Brescia, was captured by Quasdanowich's army corps and taken to Wurmser's headquarters. Questioned by the old Austrian marshal about Bonaparte's age, whose reputation had suddenly become so brilliant: "The age Scipio was when he defeated Hannibal," replied the young officer with a noble pride that pleased Wurmser. Flattered to see himself indirectly compared to the Carthaginian general, he gave his prisoner the most cordial welcome, and shortly afterward sent him back on parole.

5. Went behind enemy lines to engage in ~relations~ with an Italian noblewoman who then gave him information about the enemy, escaped back to his own side, told Napoleon and was promoted on the spot.

6. Battle of Rivoli: Captures 5 standards! Forces a battalion to surrender with only 26 guys on horses! Napoleon tells him "go lie down on the flags, it is well-deserved"! Absolute menace!

7. Continues being an icon in Egypt! Drops his sword in the middle of a battle and just casually gets off his horse, picks it up, gets back on and continues fighting like nothing ever happened! Broke his sword and both of his pistols to save Davout!

8. Capture of Stettin: Icon! Turns up to Stettin with like 500 dudes on horses completely unequipped to lay siege to anything more than a hayloft, demands the surrender of the fortress (which has a garrison of between 5000-6000 men, no one can really make up their minds), they say no, he goes "yeah well I have all of Lannes' corps right over there with 30,000 men" while NOT HAVING THAT AT ALL, and they just surrender?? And then they figure it out and try to fight back and Lasalle is just like too late bitches you just got BAMBOOZLED

9. HE FUCKING RODE A HORSE INTO A BALLROOM:

In short, returning home, at nightfall, from some errand or expedition, he saw the hotel of Madame Cesarini completely lit up, and learned that this lady, a widow, still young, very beautiful, and holding the first rank in Perugia, was giving a ball. An extravagant idea seized him; unable to resist it, he had his squadron halted and, covered in dust, without dismounting, entered the vestibule; at the risk of breaking his neck a hundred times, he climbed the beautiful stone staircase leading to the first floor, pranced over the marble slabs of the landings, over the parquet floors of the salons, which he covered with scratches; he arrived at a gallop in the ballroom and, to the terror of all the dancers, launched himself into the middle of the country dance.

Soon master of the space as of the rest, he orders the orchestra to continue playing and makes his horse finish the country dance he has begun; then, after having served himself punch, having made his horse swallow lemonades and cakes, after having made him look out the window to show himself to his hussars, after having forced him to greet the mistress of the house and the whole company, he leaves without having dismounted, and, despite all that can be observed and shouted, he descends as he climbed this staircase of stone and marble, and rejoins his hussars who idolized him and receive him with acclaim.

10. When Colonel Colbert of the 7th Hussars was wounded while covering a retreat in 1807, Lasalle becomes The Funny Guy:

A little sheepish, the colonel of the 7th Hussars, goes to the ambulance where he is forced to lie on his stomach to be bandaged. This is the position in which Lasalle found him, who, having learned of the matter, came to console his friend!… […] Lasalle's real exclamation, which can be explained, moreover, by the minor nature of the injuries, was this: "Damn pig! It's not at your age that you show your ass to everyone!"

11. Wrote a song for a Polish guard regiment under his command in 1808:

Les Français étaient en Pologne,

14. While in Salamanca, forced his generals (he was a colonel) to actually have fun and do stuff:

Every two or three days, he would have the general-in-chief [Leclerc] hunt; every day, he would play music with me for two or three hours; which one day, at dinner with General Leclerc, allowed him to say: I have a singular destiny in your army, my general. I have given you a taste for hunting; I have given General Thiébault a taste for music; all that remains is for me to instill in General Monnet a taste for wit.

15. At the general review of the cavalry in 1807, and this requires no further comment:

It was this same General Lasalle who gave a very funny reply to the Emperor when His Majesty reviewed the entire cavalry on July 5. The Emperor, in this review, had been very generous with promotions and decorations. The general, however, did not seem satisfied. "What is the matter with you?" the Emperor said to him, "you do not seem pleased." "I am pleased with your kindness, Sire; but I am not yet satisfied: I hoped that Your Majesty would have set his eyes on me to command the first regiment in the world: in a word, I hoped to replace General Dahlmann, colonel of your guides." The Emperor replied: "When General Lasalle no longer swears and no longer smokes, not only will I put him at the head of a cavalry regiment of my guard, but I will make him one of my chamberlains." "General Lasalle bowed and said to the Emperor: "Sire, since I have all the qualities of a sailor, I ask Your Majesty for command of a frigate." "No, no; that would not be my choice," the Emperor replied, laughing. "You will command the twenty cavalry regiments in the absence of Prince Murat."

Yeah he did just crack a joke to fucking Napoleon.

16. His officers were welcome to dine with him with the below method:

General Lasalle, who commanded our division, had his headquarters in Elbing [in Poland]. This general, who loves food as much as battle, had devised a comical way of extending dinner invitations to the officers of his division who were traveling from the cantonments to Elbing. The general's valet, an hour before dinner, would attach a stick to the balcony on which he would place an unfurled napkin: this napkin would remain on the balcony until all twenty of the place settings the general had at his table were occupied. The officers of his division, as long as they saw the ensign flying, could go up to pay their visit to the general; they were sure to be invited to dinner by him, but if the napkin was no longer flying, there was no point in going up for dinner. The table was full.

17. When he was going to marry his wife, Napoleon gave him money. Where did it go? Well:

He [Napoleon] spoiled him to a truly incredible extent, laughing at all his pranks and never letting him pay his debts. Lasalle was about to marry the divorced lady I mentioned above, and Napoleon had given him two hundred thousand francs from his coffers. Eight days later, he met him at the Tuileries and asked him: “When will the wedding be?” “It will take place, Sire, when I have enough to buy the basket and the furniture.” “What! But I gave you two hundred thousand francs last week… What did you do with them?” “I used half of it to pay my debts, and I lost the rest gambling.” Such an admission would have ruined the career of any other general; it made the Emperor smile, who, confining himself to pulling Lasalle’s mustache rather sharply, ordered Marshal Duroc to give him another two hundred thousand francs.

18. Stole a man's mistress, was challenged to a duel by him, except this turned out to be a terrible idea:

So the only salvation for this captain was the generosity of his adversary; it was not in doubt, but there was no doubt either that he would use it for some follies; in fact, having immediately judged the disproportion of forces, he abstained from any attack and limited himself to parrying, but he tried to do it with such vigor that the poor engineer's wrist was broken; and in the moments when the unfortunate man was recovering from such severe fatigue, my La Salle would circle around him, amidst a thousand jokes, antics, and grimaces, playing with death as with love; he would strike him with a blow from the flat of his sabre on the backside and burst out laughing.

This maneuver was repeated ten times, and, despite the rage of this unfortunate officer, he ended up exhausted. When it was obvious that he could take no more, La Salle, putting an end to the fight, said to him: "If you had known me better, you would have attached less importance to the fact that injured you and, if I had known you better, I would have refrained from joining your forces. Accept this declaration and let us end this too unequal combat, but which has only better revealed to what extent you are men of honor."

19. Friends with Fournier-Sarloveze, the inspiration for Joseph Conrad's The Duel.

20. Wrote in a letter to his wife: "My heart belongs to you, my blood to the Emperor, my life to honour".

21. When asked at a dinner if he will pass through Paris on the way to his next campaign, he replied: "Yes; it's the shortest way: I'll arrive at five o'clock in the morning; I'll order a pair of boots, I'll have a child with my wife, and I'll leave."

22. At the same dinner, absolutely refuses an escort offered to him, and when told he should preserve his life for its usefulness to the war:

General Lasalle. — I have lived long enough now. Why do we want to live? To earn honor, to make our way, our fortune. Well! I am thirty-three years old; I am a divisional general (approaching me, in a low and serious voice): Do you know that the Emperor gave me, last year, 50,000 livres a year? It's immense!

Me. — The Emperor will not stop there, and your career is not over. But to enjoy all this, you must avoid unnecessary dangers and inglorious dangers; for, after all, why do you want to earn honor, make your way, your fortune? It is to enjoy them, without, however, neglecting opportunities to increase these advantages as much as possible. General Lasalle. — No, not at all; one enjoys acquiring all that; one enjoys making war. Making war is already a great enough pleasure: one is in the noise, in the smoke, in the movement; and then, when one has made a name for oneself, well! one has enjoyed the pleasure of making it. When one has made one's fortune, one is sure that one's wife and children will want for nothing: all that is enough. As for me, I could die tomorrow.

Unbothered king.

23. Speaking of the escort:

General Thiébault. —Don't talk to us about that pleasure, we who are condemned to stay here. But you only need an escort for four leagues; there are some scoundrels around here. I will command four dragoons.

General Lasalle. — I don't want to. It would be too much of a trick. It would slow down my progress. They would all want to give me the rest of the way. I would stay on the way. General Thiébault. — I want you to have four dragoons; they are well mounted; they will follow you easily. General Lasalle. — I don't want it. General Thiébault. — They'll be at the car when you leave. General Lasalle. — I will charge them.

24. Demanded a lot of his men but took care of them - secured supplies of greatcoats, candles and other supplies during winter to ensure they remained fit.

25. He's REAL, and yet he's STILL this fucking iconic.

26. Remember how he was denied a command in the Guard cavalry? yeah well later on in Spain he turns up and takes a regiment of them to charge with anyways to come save the day.

Move over George Clooney. From Paul Mescal to Jeremy Allen White, there’s a new gang of pin-ups with salt-and-pepper hair and they’re under 40

With the first wisps of silver comes wisdom, they say, but while many men of a certain age choose to turn back the clock by reaching for a box of dye, a new wave of younger men are simply refusing to colour theirs in. The truth is that grey hair has never been so cool — just look at the red carpet. “There’s a handful of relatively young actors who just don’t care if we see them with grey hair or not,” says Paul Toner, deputy editor of 10 magazine. “Look at somebody as successful as Paul Mescal: when he’s not dying his hair for a new role, he lets his grey grow through and doesn’t mind one bit.”

He’s a silver fox? “More a silver fox in training. Let’s call him a silver fox cub instead,” Toner says. At 28, the Normal People star is one of several celebrities who, according to Toner, are “reframing” what it means to be a man approaching his thirties.

“We’ve had ‘zaddies’, those older, strapping sugar daddies with wallets to match — and we all know a silver fox when we see one — but these men, up to and around that 35 mark, understand that with salt and pepper hair comes a certain authority, a sort of superpower,” he says. As one of the four horsemen of the middle-age apocalypse (see also the pierced ear, the leather blouson and a sudden interest in cycling Lycra) the first sight of grey hair is no longer considered the over-the-hill omen of old age it once was.

At 33, arguably the world’s hottest chef who’s not actually a chef, The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White has a cut that cleverly blends his greys (on the temples and at the front) with his medium-length fair and wavy hair. At 30, the Quiet Place actor Joseph Quinn isn’t afraid to let his buzz-cut greys grow out. And at 36, the actors Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton) — with his Mallen streak — and Nick Sagar (Shadowhunters) — with his all-over grey, natural curls — have cuts that emphasise rather than disguise their salt and pepper hair. A little grey — and its associated characteristics of wisdom, experience, authority and “been about a bit but you still definitely would” — represents, for these men at least, a chance to redefine themselves as they gear up for middle age.

Not that everybody is on board with grey hair. When Louis Tomlinson, of One Direction, turned up at Glastonbury (he’s 32) with — brace yourselves — more than a few wisps of white in the front and sides, social media went into meltdown. From a disapproving “[he’s] making me feel 500 years old”, to “my man is getting more SEXY!”, his natural, dye-free hair caused quite the stir.

“Louis’s hair hovers around the 20 per cent salt to about 80 per cent pepper, mark,” says Mads-Sune Lund Christensen, a colourist at Josh Wood Salon in London. “I have men, and these are successful men, who come in for a colour and ask specifically for some grey to be left in — and that’s a new thing,” he says. “In the past, clients always wanted full coverage to remove it.” So now they want to look their age? “They want the salt and the pepper to show — and its authority.”

“It’s everywhere you look,” Toner adds. “You only have to watch something as hugely popular with men as Match of the Day.” Older chaps, yes, but Alan Shearer, Roy Keane and Gary Lineker — three of the most watched and, certainly, admired men on British television — all have grey hair or grey in their beards. Keane’s salt and pepper Grizzly Adams number is an absolute belter. Forget Succession, it’s these men (see also Graeme Souness and Jamie Carragher, the list goes on) who are influencing how younger millennial males wear their hair and, indeed, how they dress.

A quick walk down the men’s aisle in Boots confirms that products for salt and pepper hair have never been so effective, or popular: Control GX Grey Reducing Shampoo (which sounds as if it should be on Top Gear), for example, maintains that all-important seasoning mix. Meanwhile, what’s surely the best bit of man-kit since the reclining chair, Just For Men Moustache & Beard Brush-In Colour Gel will tone down any of those comedy pirate beards in bingo-marker black.

It was during the Australian leg of One Direction's mammoth global tour that Zayn Malik resolved to turn his back on fame.

Back then, in 2013, he was dating fellow popstar Perrie Edwards, whose band Little Mix were also on the road, and the young lovers both found themselves in Sydney.

Having been apart for weeks, they wanted to have a 'date night', only such was Zayn's popularity that 1D fans – Directioners as they called themselves – followed him and the rest of the band everywhere they went. The only way for Zayn to see Perrie was to sneak in through her hotel's laundry room.

For the singer, who like his fellow bandmates struggled with being in the limelight, the experience contributed to his decision to quit 18 months later in March 2015 – right in the middle of another world tour. He later cited 'stress' and the desire to be a 'normal 22-year-old'.

This was not an isolated incident: Zayn, now 32, and his bandmates Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and the late Liam Payne, lived their late teens and early 20s as caged animals, unable to leave their hotel rooms to avoid a stampede of hysterical fans.

'This made them hate being in the band,' said one source who worked with them in their heyday. 'It was actually traumatic at times.'

And I'm told that it is this trauma that's behind One Direction's decision not to reunite, under any circumstances.

Not even when they were asked by the BRITs committee to come together for tonight's event at London's O2 Arena, to pay tribute to Liam, 31, who died in October after falling from a balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The answer was still a firm 'no'. It wasn't for the lack of trying, say BRITs insiders: 'Those in charge thought it would be a great moment, if ever there was a chance of getting the band to reform, it was this year.'

Instead, I'm told, there will be a 'special moment' in the show dedicated to the troubled singer who had watched Niall perform on his solo world tour just a few days before his death.

'There is no doubt that Harry, Zayn, Louis and Niall think about Liam all the time but there was no way they were going to do it,' said the source. They'd showed 'absolutely no interest' in performing in tribute to their former bandmate, the source added.

'They have happy memories, particularly of the early days, but towards the end things got pretty dreadful and they began to despise One Direction. There's no way they would get back on that stage, even Liam's death wasn't enough.

'You've got to remember that they were doing more than 120 gigs in a year at one point, flying around the world from hotel to hotel which they couldn't leave. They went on the X Factor as young solo singers not thinking in a million years that they would be as big as the Beatles.

'The attitude from Simon Cowell and the record label was that if they put the work in then they would never have to work again. The feeling among the group was that it was easy for their bosses to say.'

Since their split in January 2016, ten months after Zayn quit, the group have only been in the same room twice.

Once was at Liam's funeral, at St Mary's church in Amersham last November; the previous time was back in November 2016 when Simon Cowell issued a three line whip for them to get to the X Factor studios to support Louis, who was performing a solo set on the show following his mother's death. Harry and Liam were 'fuming', but nevertheless, they travelled from the US to the London studio.

They refused to go on stage, however. Instead it was a private meeting in Louis's dressing room.

It would, of course, have been so poignant for One Direction to come together for this year's BRITs, an event at which they were not only recipients of seven awards. It would also be a night, I think, they'd actually enjoy.

For several years I'd watched them, knocking back wine and enjoying every minute of being stars of the show. For two years in a row, I also saw them at the show's after party at Mayfair's Arts Club, working the room like children in a sweet shop with Cowell watching on like a proud dad.

After a while, however, the mogul's enthusiasm for their hard work wore thin among the band members. Moreover, there was a feeling that despite making £30 million each from their five years as the world's biggest boyband, it was damaging their lives beyond repair.

'Harry and Liam would actually comment sometimes that they would rather have been at university,' said a friend of the band. 'Instead they basically became really f***** up. Some turned to drugs. It was pretty awful at times.'

It is not just their bad memories that have prevented the band from coming together, it would also be fair to say that relations between them are still strained. Towards the end of their time together, there were rumours that such were the levels of animosity within the group, that they would fly on two separate private jets.

Today, while Louis and Zayn remain close, having been a 'bit of a trio' with Liam, there is little love lost between them and Harry.

Even at Liam's funeral last November, Harry wasn't seen with any of his former bandmates, instead choosing to arrive with his friends James Corden and television producer Ben Winston. Meanwhile Zayn and Louis were seen deep in conversation outside the church.

And as for Niall, 31, sources say that he too has 'moved on' – arguably to bigger and better things as he now runs a talent agency for golfers, particularly bringing on women into the sport, as well as performing as a solo artist.

'He saw the band for what it was and took what he could from that time and built the rest of his life,' the source told me. 'Niall has just got on with it,' I'm told, and generally 'leads a very under-the-radar, quiet life.'

Then there is Harry, the 31-year-old heart-throb who signed a huge record deal which dwarfed the others back in 2016.

After much negotiation he went with Sony label Colombia, reportedly worth an eye-watering $80 million. As well as having number one hits, such as As It Was and Watermelon Sugar, he has also tried his hand at acting, winning roles in war movie Dunkirk and psychological thriller Don't Worry Darling. At the last count, he was said to be sitting on a personal fortune of £175 million.

'He is head and shoulders above the others in terms of his success,' says a band insider.

'His life is just so different, almost unrelatable to the others these days.'

While Harry remains one of the world's most popular and lucrative popstars, today Zayn – who has a four-year-old daughter Khai from his relationship with American model Gigi Hadid – lives an almost reclusive life on a farm in Pennsylvania.

Louis, 33, meanwhile, who has also had some success as a solo artist, exists very much under the radar in London.

'Getting back together would drag up the hurt,' says one source. 'They don't see the point in doing that, certainly not at the moment and probably never.'

20th August

“Harry will you just talk to me?” I ask stood in our kitchen. I came home 4 days ago and Harry has barley said a word to me. He’s facing away from me hovering over the sink “Harry!” I shout at him feeling irritated that’s he’s ignoring me. I see his back muscles tense before turning around

“What is there to talk about?” Harry brushes past me and walks into the living room

“Maybe the reason your upset with me?”

“I’m fine”

“No your not. Your pissed at me and I don’t know why. Even the fans noticed during our concert. So tell me. Why are you angry with me? What have I done?” I sadly say feeling really confused

“Nothing” he sighs “you’ve not done anything, but I just can’t watch you and him together. He’s not right for you”

“Him? You mean Liam” i scoff crossing my arms over my chest “ and how would you know that he’s not right for me?”

“Because I know you YN. At this point I probably know you better than you know yourself!” Harry storms over to me. I drop my arms and take a deep breath. I can smell his aftershave on his skin “because I can’t see you get hurt” he softly says now standing in front of me “I’m scared that when he breaks your heart you’ll spiral”

“I love that you care for me H but this isn’t your life, it’s mine”

“I know” he sighs looking into my eyes. His right hand then cups my cheek “I just… i…” he sighs then starts leaning in, he looks like he’s about to kiss me, but I pull away making a little bit of space between us “sorry”

“We can’t. Taylor and Liam”

“Taylor’s was just a publicity stunt. You know that and anyway we ‘split up’ at the beginning of the year”

“What about Kendal? You’ve been seeing her recently”

“She’s another publicity stunt YN I promise you”

“She may be, but Liam isn’t. Even if I were to say let’s give us a go the media would catch on then you’d be a cheat and I’d be a home wrecker. I’m sorry Harry, you’ve made it clear that you don’t like him, but I do and I really want to make it work between Liam and I”

“I’m sorry” he lowers his head before pulling me into a hug “I’ll always be here for you, you know that?”

“I know. Thank you” we stand there hugging one another, swaying side to side. I feel conflicted, being here in Harry’s arms I feel at ease, safe, like this is home, but with Liam I get the butterflies in my stomach. He makes me nervous. Breaking the silence Harry and I hear Louis shouting from upstairs

“Finally! you’ve made up”

“We were never fighting” Harry replies to Louis walking down the stairs

“It bloody felt like you were. Hated seeing you two barley even say one word to each other. Even poor Cookie could tell something was up”

“Speaking of Cookie I better take her for a walk”

“I’ll come with you” Louis quickly says making me frown

“You wanna come walk Cookie with me?” Louis never comes to walk Cookie with me

“Yes”

“Ok then” I reply taking Cookies lead and harness making her go crazy

“Wanna order Chinese tonight?” Harry asks

“Sure” I give him a smile, get Cookie ready and leave the house with Louis.

We walk in silence until I finally say

“You gonna tell me the real reason why you wanted to join me on a walk?”

“You gonna tell me why you dodged Harry’s kiss” I stop dead in my tracks. I can feel all the colour drain from my face

“You… you saw…”

“Come on YN it’s been obvious from day one that you’ve both had feelings for each other”

“I don’t know what your talking about” I start walking quickly again

“I know what your doing” Louis jogs up to catch up to me

“And what might that be”

“You started dating Liam because you know if he breaks up with you it won’t hurt as much as it would if it was Harry, but I can tell you know he’s crazy about you”

“That’s not, no thats, your wrong” I stutter feeling all kinds of mixed emotions

“Are you sure about that? Just like Harry knows you, so do I. I know you little ways and you have feelings for Harry”

“We can’t” I softly say “there’s to many factors at play. 1 the band 2 Liam 3 Taylor”

“Wrong time, right person. You’ll see” Louis says putting an arm around my shoulders, giving me a little squeeze. Once again we walk in silence. Leaving me to think.

17th September

I arrive in Melbourne Australia. Liam invited me here since 1 he wants me to meet his parents and 2 it’s like a mini holiday before I have to travel to Adelaide ready to restart tour again. Do I feel like Liam and I are moving a bit quick? Sure, but at the same time if I don’t meet them now who knows when I’ll next be in Australia.

“Don’t stress they will love you” Liam says taking my hand at the airport

“Liam cameras” I say looking around and instantly seeing paparazzi

“They’re going to figure out about us sooner or later”

“I know but Liam we’ve only been dating officially for a month. You and Miley only broke up like 3 months ago.

In just over 24 hours, Louis Tomlinson passed through Buenos Aires and caused a commotion, with hundreds of fans crowding at the door of his hotel singing and shouting his name, and also occupying almost the entire block where there is a FM radio station where he went to give an interview.

The fanaticism generated with his solo career by the former singer of One Direction in Argentina is so great that in fact he will give a recital in the same stadium where he was in 2014 with the mega-boy band. It will be on May 18 in Vélez Sarsfield.

Louis Tomlinson already has two solo albums and is touring the world presenting the most recent, Faith in the Future. It came out in November 2022 and surprised with his most rocky sound, close to the Brit-pop of his beloved Oasis, and less pop. It was number one in England and three singles came out, Bigger Than Me, Out of My System and Silver Tongues.

Hurricane Louis

The visit was really fleeting with the purpose of promoting his show next month, the old-fashioned way, when the artists toured the countries to advertise albums or tours, something they currently do on Zoom or with posts on their official accounts.

Louis arrived on Friday night and spent Saturday fulfilling an intense schedule of activities, to leave early the next day.

First he went to the Vélez football field for a television interview which will be televised later by TN, and then he went to the radio station Los 40 Principales, where his fans filled the entire Gorriti street, between Ravignani and Arévalo, to witness an interview where eight listeners joined to ask him a question each.

He finally arrived at 4 p.m. at the Four Seasons hotel, where hundreds of other fans were screaming for him. There he gave a series of reports and chatted with Clarín in a room equipped as a small television set, with lights and a set with his name and the cover of the disc.

"Never, not for a second, did I think I would be going through some of the same experiences," he said, "that I was lucky enough to live in the band. I thought that was something unique. So being able to come here and feel the level of love and the incredible reaction on today's radio station, means a lot to me. When I imagined what my solo career would be like, I really didn't know what to expect.

Re-filling stadiums

At 32-years-old, Louis Tomlinson has the experience of having been part of one of the greatest pop phenomena of the last 20 years, with sales records and sold-out shows in stadiums around the world. And now he is repeating the fury alone, just as it happened just a little earlier with his ex-bandmate Harry Styles.

In Louis’ case, he first sold out the closed Movistar Arena stadium in 2022 and now he goes through a huge soccer field like Vélez.

Q: Did you think that being a soloist you had to start from below and sing in smaller places?

Louis: Yes, exactly. But it turns out that I can still play in big places, so it's great.

Q: Can we really talk about a mania of a "louistomlinson-mania"? Does it happen everywhere or is it special in Latin America?

Louis: I think that in terms of the level of similar intensity, and seeing what happened a moment ago on the radio station, that certainly doesn't happen to me everywhere. Let me put it this way: it's incredible to be so far from home and feel that level of love. I'm very excited to think about what the show will be like here.

Q: It's incredible that almost exactly ten years have passed since the last time you filled Vélez. How do you feel when you return to the same stadium?

Louis: I feel very lucky to be able to play in those places again on my own. I also feel very, very proud of myself and my fans. I feel like we have created something that is quite special and we did it together. With them as listeners, but also as facilitators. That really helped my confidence and made me feel good on stage. It's a lovely relationship and I'm very proud of it.

Q: This tour started almost a year ago, how did it evolve with respect to the first shows?

Louis: I definitely feel in a good place right now with the show. Anyway, in advance I was excited about this tour because this album was designed for the live show. So I was excited to see how the songs would work. And the energy is great. I am very excited to show Faith in the Future to Latin America.

Q: How did the idea of making a live cover of Arctic Monkeys come about?

Louis: Arctic Monkeys grew up about 20 minutes from where I live. It was something very close, very fresh in the mind and obviously huge. I was growing up and I'm also a big fan. I usually do the song 505 because it's very pretty.

Often, with the versions, I probably think more about what I would like to sing than about what I imagine that everyone else would like to hear, which may be misjudged, but I'm enjoying it.

Q: When you were a teenager you sang Oasis songs and now you have a rock band that sounds very Brit-pop, almost closing a circle.

Louis: Thank you. I am very, very fortunate to have the band I have, but they also perform sonically and visually, everything that is really important to me. They sound absolutely incredible. I don't think I would be able to do this without my band.

Q: Live you also perform songs from One Direction. Did you feel that kind of shadow at the beginning of your solo career and now you are more comfortable looking back?

Louis: I think a bit about both things. I think that at the beginning of my career I would have been a little more worried about putting too many One Direction songs in the repertoire. What I wanted most was to spread my wings and show who I was. But I think that as time went by, the nostalgic moments are really charming. So it's like a beautiful mixture of nostalgia and it's very nice to do it.

Q: This is the third time you have visited our country. If you had to describe your Argentine fans in three words, which one would you choose?

Louis: Passionate. Loyal. Affectionate. That’s okay, isn't it?

Q: The soccer player Kun Agüero said that there is a lot of talk to you through Instagram or Twitter. Have you ever met him in person?

Louis: Actually, we have never seen each other in person. Over the years we've talked a little here and there, but I never found time. I have a kind of crazy hope that he can come to the show.

Q: If you had to choose one of your songs, either from Walls or Faith in the Future, that reflects how you feel right now in your life, what would it be?

Louis: I would say that the name of the album (Faith in the future) represents where I am right now, but I think that in the future I would like to always be optimistic.

Q: And if all the One Direction discography was deleted and a song had to be saved. Which one would you save?

Louis: It's interesting... I would probably say Story Of My Life. That seemed like a real milestone. I would say it's a little more serious. And I also think it's a bit of a crazy song.

Q: You are a big soccer fan, do you have any preference for an Argentine club?

Louis: I'm very afraid to say something wrong... I'd better say that I love you all. (laughs)

Hisagi exudes a strong impression of a character who is often toyed with, so I recall being very happy because he was surprisingly cool. Nevertheless, it's because my mental image of Hisagi was just as the aforementioned, that I also remember being taken by surprise after seeing Kazeshini. There are some characters whom I think have a Zanpakutō that is different to their image, and some characters whom I think have a Zanpakutō which suit them perfectly. So, I'm curious whether sensei creates a character first and then thinks about their Zanpakutō, or if it's the other way around.

This is a question regarding Ōetsu's line, "I know the whereabouts of every Asauchi" which appears in volume 59. I considered that perhaps this so-called "whereabouts" has three components:

1. Physical location ①

2. Physical location ②

3. Psychological & spiritual location

First of all, "1. physical location ①" is the storehouse where the Asauchi are kept, which will be distributed to those who will soon enter the Shin'ō Academy and become Shinigami or members of other organizations. Even in this case, it certainly would be surprising for Ichigo, but I don't think it's something to be that boastful about. This is because it is (most likely) a teacher from the Shin'ō Academy who takes out Asauchi from the storehouse and then distributes them, so it's not Ōetsu's privilege.

Next, "2. physical location ②" means that, similar to GPS, he can perceive the current location of all Zanpakutō which have been released from their Asauchi.

Finally, "3. Psychological & spiritual location" is the key point where Shinigami who possess Asauchi liberate their Asauchi. I believe there is a standard which dictates how far a Shinigami needs to go before they are able to release it, and I wonder if Ōetsu knows what that standard is for all Shinigami. Knowing the key point for the release criterion of all Shinigami extending from Soul Society let alone to the various locations in the Human World is truly an extraordinary feat which deserves to be called 'god-like'.

It's not the best idea to base things on personal impressions, so I would appreciate your opinion or answer regarding this analysis.

Which one is it? Since Shinigami do not harbor Kishi in the first place, they only have a method of treatment for the soul, and since the Quincy are living human beings, I think it was necessary to establish a treatment method that directly affects the soul through the Kishi.
