The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007)

Tumblr media
121 minutes of violence against women and girls. And this is coming from a true crime fan. I have watched many a Homicide Hunter and People Magazine Investigates, both of which are way better than this ficticious quasi-found footage doc.
In a way, I can see where they were trying to go with this killer. The ways he was always a few steps ahead made for a smart antagonist. However, many of his victims frustrated me. Why put be alone at night when a killer is on the loose? Why pick up a hitchhiker? Why get into a stranger’s vehicle? It may have been the late 90s, but people weren’t stupid.
Anyways, I’ve yet to find a really spectacular found footage film that turns my crank. I thought this psuedo-documentary would do it, but the search continues.
Watch this if:
you are looking to mix up your true crime stint
your brain will make this scarier by filling in the gaps
found footage is your favourite horror sub-genre
Similar titles:
Don’t watch a similar title, watch something better (the true crime ones are very respectful in their retellings)
Joe Kenda: Homicide Hunter (2011-2020) (Joe is retelling about his time on the force in Colorado Springs)
People Magazine Investigates (2016-present) (often unsolved cases, US-based crimes and serial killers)
Murdoch Mysteries (2008-present) (for people that like crime dramas, but the hook for this series is that its set in 1900s Toronto)

Bassist Herbie Flowers, Session Musician and Former Member of T. Rex and Sky, Dies at 86
Bassist Herbie Flowers, a former member of T. Rex and Sky who played on sessions for David Bowie, Lou Reed and others, has died at 86.
His death was confirmed by Hurst Festival, where Flowers was scheduled to play later this month. No cause or date was given.
“He was an amazing person and will be missed,” festival organizers said.
A member of T. Rex and Sky, Flowers is perhaps best known for his session work, which is said to have exceeded 500 recordings by the end of the 1970s. He played alongside Elton John, Roy Harper, Al Kooper, Bryan Ferry and every Beatle save for John Lennon, with his most-famous basslines featuring in David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” and Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side.”
Through his connection to Paul McCartney, Flowers helped set in motion the events that eventually led to Laurence Juber joining Wings, the drummer said.
“He was a great bass player, a friendly fellow and an inspiration to me as an up-and-coming session player in London,” Juber wrote on social media.
Flowers was a “bass legend,” Chris Wood said. “One of the greatest bass players of all time,” is Fernando Perdomo’s assessment. And Leland Sklar mourned the man he called, simply, “the great Herbie Flowers.”
“A true legend of the instrument,” said bassist Guy Pratt. “There was only one Herbie Flowers.”

May Worlds Beyond Number be remembered for all of its glorious story and world building...
But also the just epic number of bits it has already generated.
Everyone is COMMITTED to the 7 point scale that drives Brennan up a wall, for instance.

George’s first American visit, part 2 —
“When the trio [George, his brother Peter, and sister Lou] arrived, they were informed that Marcia [Raubach] had already gone home for the day. At the station were Art Smith, an advertising salesman, and Joe Browning, the weekend announcer. Smith remembers George Harrison as being ‘a very nice fellow,’ and Browning agreed. But Browning added, ‘I thought he needed to get a haircut.’ […] When [Marcia] arrived [back] at the station, [she] recalls, [George] was very excited about the car she was driving. It was her father’s black 1959 Oldsmobile Delta 88 with tail fins. ‘He really looked it over; he asked me if it was my car,’ she said. ‘I told him no, but he was really impressed with it. He was impressed with a lot of things.’ Marcia recalls [George] as being ‘very, very clean cut,’ wearing a white shirt, jeans and brown sandals. […] Raubach said she found the young British musician to be ‘really soft-spoken and almost hesitant to ask me questions.’” - Before He Was Fab: George Harrison’s First American Visit (2000) “George told Marcia that he was an apprentice electrician, but that the Beatles were really taking off back home. ‘He really liked my dad’s Oldsmobile Delta 88,’ Marcia recalls. On her radio show that day she played ‘From Me To You’ and ‘She Loves You,’ but it’s her recollection that the songs made little impression on her listening audience. George gave her a copy of ‘She Loves You,’ which she keeps in a safe deposit box at the bank. ‘I wish I’d have asked him to autograph it,’ she says. Marilyn Lewis, who also interviewed George, for the Echo, the Benton Community High School newspaper, says she did it ‘mainly as a favor to Louise.’ […] George told her that so many fans mobbed his band at one appearance that they had to be smuggled into the venue in a garbage truck, but Marilyn wasn’t overly impressed. Was he cute? ‘Heavens, no,’ the now-retired Ohio teacher says. ‘He looked kind of pitiful.’” - Smithsonian Magazine Please note: You can find photos taken during this vacation featured in Living In The Material World. I actually liked the way Otis and Maeve's story ended (I say this as someone who has shipped them since season 1). My only problem is that I feel like there weren't special moments between them like there used to be in season 1, or sometimes in season 2, that would have made their break up feel more impactful. I feel like Aimee and Maeve's relationship ended up outshining them, and even Isaac's small moment with Maeve this season felt like more of a connection than Otis had with her this season. I definitely loved what Maeve shared with Aimee and Isaac and would not change a thing. But, I would also add awesome Motis moments like we got when the show first came out. But I feel like the letter sort of made up for all the bullshit that went down between them and explained why she loved him. I still would have preferred if there were some season 1-like moments though.
Also, I didn't really like Ruby's last scene with Otis. I think it was a sign that she was putting herself first instead choosing to hang out with Otis when she clearly wasn't over him, which was good. But I wish the dialogue had been different. Or maybe I've completely misinterpreted the scene?
I actually quite liked this season overall for all of the characters, especially Maeve, Aimee, Ruby, Isaac, and Eric. I think Adam's arc was good too, he was just never my personal favourite.
Also, did anyone else expect that Molloy dude to steal Maeve's work? And a book from Maria Bronte's perspective sounds really interesting to me.

Insufferable Arsehole Part 2: An Encounter Visual
"You know what, just save it Matty! I don't need to hear it" she says, turning away from him. She really wants to just turn around and push him, or swipe her palm across his face. "Listen Lou-" he says, she interrupts again. Lou was her nickname and she hated that he said it casually, as if they didn't despise each other. "No you listen! I don't know how many times I need to tell you, but I'm not here to annoy you. Not everything is about you and you need to get that into your insufferable fucking head! I am here to help out a friend who asked for my help. And I don't need your stupid comments when I'm just trying to help" she rants, her voice raised. He nods as he listens to her. "You're right. Im sorry. You just... Ugh you just irk me" he says admitting what she already knows. Since the both of them remember they didn't get along, he rubbed her the wrong way and visa versa. The truth was Matty knew why she hated him, he gave her every reason to hate him. She didn't know why Matty hated her, she was nice to him in the beginning, wanting nothing more than for her best friend's best friend, to like her back, he just didn't and soon she hated him for the way he treated her.

Just binged-watched the final season in one day.
With some of the cast not returning and a few 'darker in tone' storylines; this season did struggle in certain places... but there were also some good high-points and I think it was the right possible ending for the show.

The magazine this article came from is unknown, but it was written in Feb. 1964 by Nora Ephron.
Transcript:
The Youngest Beatle
"The other day at a Beatles press conference for fan magazines, a young lady raised her hand and said, 'Mr. Starr is known for his rings, Mr. McCartney obviously for his looks, and Mr. Lennon for his wife, and then there's Mr. Harrison. What about you, Mr. Harrison?'
George Harrison looked up from his chicken sandwich, batted what have come to be known as his 'adorable eyelashes,' and said, 'As long as I get an equal share of the money, I'm willing to stay anonymous.'
Beatle George has little to worry about. If he didn't have those adorable eyelashes, and a long unbroken unibrow curving across his upper face, it would be almost impossible to distinguish him from the other three mopheads. Beatle fans have no difficulty however; a random sampling of them at the Ed Sullivan Show the other night indicated that more Beatle fans were madly in love with George than with any other Beatle. 'He's just, well, he's, well, I can't explain it,' said one young admirer of George.
Those who know the group find it easy to describe the young man. 'George likes people to be very blunt,' says disc jockey Murray the K. 'He likes them to tell it like it is. No shilly-shallying. He's very definite.'
Harrison's sister, Mrs. Louise Caldwell, agreed. 'He's very direct,' she said. 'He's very much like our mother. Be it bad for her or good for her, she's always direct.
George's bluntness is refreshingly implicit in the few things he says in public. At one press conference, the group was asked why their records had succeeded in the past few months in the U.S., when they had flopped so miserably a year earlier. 'The thing is,' George said, 'Capitol promoted the record.'
At 20, George is the youngest Beatle, and the youngest of four children. His father works for the transport company in Liverpool; his brothers are now tradesmen.
He attended a private school -- 'the best in Liverpool' -- the Liverpool Institute, where his record was spotty. 'George had a "devil-may-care" attitude towards school,' said one friend. 'He was bright, so he didn't apply himself.'
When he was 14, his mother gave him a $5 guitar for Christmas and that more or less finished any thought he might have had to become a scholar. He and Paul McCartney, who also attended the Institute, spent their free time improvising on the guitar and singing together. Occasionally, they would set off on long camping trips, hitchhiking over the countryside with knapsacks on their backs and guitars on their arms.
Midway through school, George dropped out to become an apprentice electrician. 'I had to stop trying to be an electrician because I kept blowing everything up.' he said once. In fact, he had to stop being an electrician when he became deeply involved with being a Beatle. He and Paul had met John Lennon, who attended school nearby, at a local coffee shop. The three began to play guitars together, and The Beatles began.
Why have The Beatles succeeded? 'We're different,' says George, 'and we came along when everyone was ready for a change.'
'In this business, I think you've got to broaden yourself, adapt yourself,' Harrison told the London Evening Standard's Maureen Cleave. 'If you're surrounded by a band of screaming girls, you adapt yourself to that. You don't think they're all lusting after you.'
'If we fizzle out -- well, we fizzle out. But it will all have been a lot of fun.'"
