The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007)

121 minutes of violence against women and girls. And this is coming from a true crime fan. I have watched many a Homicide Hunter and People Magazine Investigates, both of which are way better than this ficticious quasi-found footage doc.
In a way, I can see where they were trying to go with this killer. The ways he was always a few steps ahead made for a smart antagonist. However, many of his victims frustrated me. Why put be alone at night when a killer is on the loose? Why pick up a hitchhiker? Why get into a stranger’s vehicle? It may have been the late 90s, but people weren’t stupid.
Anyways, I’ve yet to find a really spectacular found footage film that turns my crank. I thought this psuedo-documentary would do it, but the search continues.
Watch this if:
you are looking to mix up your true crime stint
your brain will make this scarier by filling in the gaps
found footage is your favourite horror sub-genre
Similar titles:
Don’t watch a similar title, watch something better (the true crime ones are very respectful in their retellings)
Joe Kenda: Homicide Hunter (2011-2020) (Joe is retelling about his time on the force in Colorado Springs)
People Magazine Investigates (2016-present) (often unsolved cases, US-based crimes and serial killers)
Murdoch Mysteries (2008-present) (for people that like crime dramas, but the hook for this series is that its set in 1900s Toronto)

woof. the scariest thing this can imagine a serial killer do is be a little theatrical and into BDSM. the weird, unnecessary kink-shaming is strong with this one. misunderstands BDSM even worse than 50 Shades of Gray, to be honest. frankly, stunning how much more effective this movie would be if we just didn't see any of the actual tapes, because they are honestly comical and mostly just serve to indulge in badly filmed violence against women (like genuinely bizarre how they go out of their way to mention that he also attacked non-women, but they only show us the violence he commits against women. like, that's fucking weird, brother.) than depicting what happened to them with any sort of real gravity. if you want to watch this done better, just go watch the miniseries Thirteen.

finally got around to watching The Poughkeepsie Tapes, truly fucking terrible, good lord what were they thinking. the scariest thing they can imagine a serial killer doing is being into theater and BDSM, and it's like mostly just an excuse to do violence against women on film (and it's not even well-filmed or interesting to watch, mostly just comical), even though they go out of their way to explicitly say he also hurts non-women.
anyway, here's some thoughts i had as i watched it.

Note
could you name a few yandere horror movies that have the slasher x final girl trope please
you said there's not a lot but i'm dying for reccs
SLIGHT SPOLIERS FOR THESE MOVIES but also almost all of them are like 10+ years old so--
Killer Actually In Love With Final Girl:
Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)
Valentine (2001)
The Boy (2016)
Halloween Ends (2022)
Piggy (2022)
Phantom of the Opera (2004) ((yeah maybe he's not a slasher but he does kill/attempt to kill like 10 ppl so))
Killer Obsessed With Final Girl:
Halloween (1978)
Halloween (2007) ((familial yandere, not romantic))
Friday The 13th (2009) ((also familial yandere))
Candyman (1992) ((could be argued that he's actually in love with Helen too))
Prom Night (2008)
Final Girl With Stockholm Syndrome:
The Collection (2012) ((okay technically she's not a final girl but she's still a girl who the killer liked enough))
The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007)
If You Squint Hard Enough Lmao:
Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006)
Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 (1988) ((I mean, Pinhead and Kristy to end up being together in the most recent comics soooooo))
My Bloody Valentine (1981 or 2009) ((and yes, they both actually have different plots and killers!))
Prey (2022) ((I will die on that hill about the bear scene))
Honorable Mentions (not necessarily slasher x final girl, but still a killer in love romantically or platonically):
Misery (1990)
American Mary (2012)
Megan (2022)
Child's Play (2019)
May (2002)
Sweeney Todd (2007)
Crimson Peak (2015)
