obsessed with the fact that if you choose the last purple option in lucanis' romance chat before going off to tearstone island ("they MOVED the MOON!!!" still in the running for the best delivery in the whole game btw it's so ineffably hilarious to me), it's rook who flinches away just a little bit (if still warmly <3) and tries to change the topic and lucanis who's steady even though he's clearly still so afraid. 'don't tempt fate'/'*the softest fucking voice you've ever heard in your entire life* I don't intend to'. pain and suffering

lucanis looking at rook and helplessly, with a wonder that verges on despair, saying 'what would I do without you?' is soooo. especially at that point in the relationship and with what's about to happen. and for whatever reason rook can't quite stay with the fact that they do mean that much to someone, that they are so reverently and so groundingly 'I want to know what your favourite food is so I can make it for you any time you want it' everyday loved, it's too much and they have to deflect from it or the fear of losing it. can say some very interesting things about them, too.

(there is also a Pattern in that in my estimation lucanis frequently responds better to inviting humour than to earnest shows of concern -- it seems to help him be more engaged/online to be offered that more neutral space to meet you in and uh 'build' the conversation around something funny together than to be confronted with compassion head-on because that clearly mostly deer-in-the-headlights him, as we also see with some of the early flirt options haha. contrast this especially with bellara, who repeatedly gets genuinely upset if you try to make light of some pressing and painful situation she's dealing with (girl I'm so sorry I'm so jestercore and I canot change this but I'll try :'( for you). I think the times lucanis reacts negatively to the purple options are much more about you siding with other (frequently more charismatic lol) people against him or throwing him under the bus interpersonally -- like seeming to go along with illario's charm offensives, or telling teia lucanis didn't want to come help out with caterina's funeral and he'd just sit alone and brood about it if you didn't force him (???!!! hello??? unprovoked and deeply unkind out of left field???? this option is so fucking MEAN and for what fhdaskjfa you're telling me there's no way for rook to be a bit of a dick in this game?)

when it's one on one conversation he consistently seems to find it quite comforting, though... which makes a lot of sense because in many ways it's how he interacts with illario, just shorn of the resentments and hidden daggers and things they Do Not Talk About but really should beneath the levity that makes it sharp. it's gone ugly between them, but I think the affectionate instinct beneath is real and goes back a long way before all of that festered -- it's a form of play he does with people he loves. and uh. not really caterina huh. notably.)

so its absolutely no secret that a solid chunk of Saihate Station is made up of commentary on work culture and all the ways its toxic and exploitative (shitty management, overtime, bad pay, taking work home, pitting employees against each other, the list goes on), and in a previous post I said I might ramble about it a bit.

Haru is a character who is repeatedly shown to be utterly incompetent at work, and this is something others consistently look down on him for. Even when Tatsunami is still in his 'shower Haru with love and compliments' phase early on in the game, he doesn't try to play up Haru's skills at work, but tells him outright that Haru's job isn't right for him. We see via flashbacks that other characters such as the manager and their coworkers view Haru's struggles at work as an indication that he is incompetent in other aspects of his life as well and that he's just an all-around useless person (something which Haru himself believes as well).

However, we also see and hear from Haru multiple times that he takes good care of his home life and has some decent amount of domestic skill (i.e. cooking). This to me is one of the more subtle commentaries on work culture in the game: Haru has things he's good at, but they aren't the "right" skills because they all fall into household duties rather than things you'd need to do in a 9-5. For a salaryman in a patriarchal capitalist society, a man with domestic skills but no work skills may as well have no skills at all, and so Haru is still worth practically nothing to those around him despite not being as incompetent as he is perceived.

Then you have Tatsunami: master's degree, model employee, put-together appearance, works overtime and then takes work home with a smile. We know that he has far surpassed Haru at their workplace despite being there for two months less than him, and we see very clearly via flashback and exposition that Tatsunami is well-liked by their coworkers and manager. Haru goes as far as to admit that he hadn't viewed Tatsunami as human, but as "someone who's perfect at everything". And it certainly seems that way from how Tatsunami is presented. Hell, the first time he's on screen, Haru gives us a nice long and self-deprecating narration about how great Tatsunami is and how much he sucks by comparison. Until we see Tatsunami's apartment.

Probably not the place most people would picture when asked to imagine such an excellent person's home.

Tatsunami also can't cook for shit, and I promise i'm not just bringing this up be mean. It's the fact that both Haru and Tatsunami have clear strengths and weaknesses, Haru's weaknesses being in the workplace and Tatsunami's in the home, but one is held in such higher regard than the other simply because Tatsunami's skills can be exploited at their job and Haru's can't. Not every person on planet earth was put here to work a corporate 9-5, but with the way their manager and coworkers act, you'd think it was some terrible moral failing to be anything but a diligent salaryman that lets himself be exploited. Haru has internalized the notion that 'success' in life is solely measured by the job you work and this is one of the driving forces behind the deep insecurity that dominates his character.

I don't really know how to conclude this but given the terrible work culture both in Japan and elsewhere worldwide (and how its getting worse), I've been very interested in Saihate Station's messages about work culture and what makes a person "valuable" to society (as well as to other individuals, but that's a conversation for another day).

i really, really appreciate the nuance in KCD and in A Woman's Lot DLC regarding gender and class in medieval europe

like yes theresa does have to get married eventually. that's an imperative for a woman in her station of that time period. the survival and economic stability of herself and her family depend on it, and she does not necessarily get that much of a say in the ultimate decision. but she's more upset at her future husband being older (and not henry) than the concept of getting married itself. and in the days leading up to the attack on skalitz, she can drink ale and haul flour and learn how to shoot a bow and arrow and traipse around skalitz with her dog and get mud on her dress.

there are absolutely Rules that structure her life, but they are definitely Not The Same Rules that structure the life of women born into a higher station.

like even the nuance with her father arranging a marriage for her! her father does spring the idea of marriage on her, which is a bad look for him. however, it is still his responsibility to take care of such things, and economics feature heavily in that decision making process. but it's not the end of the world if it doesn't go well immediately, if theresa gets cold feet for meeting with her fiancee-to-be. there are no potential alliances to be built or broken, no lands to be fought over, no livelihoods to protect - the stakes are generally lower.

there's room in the relationship between father and daughter for discussion, for apologies, for the potential of feedback that never gets realized.

do you think curly and anya got into arguments? what do you think is the silliest thing they ever argued over?

I think they all got into arguments. Stuck in a small space with only so much to occupy you with the same like 4 people. You learn patterns, you learn habits and odd little behaviors' they have. You learn to love or loathe them but I personally think these two would keep those type of gripes to themselves.

Personally I think they would argue over game nights because Curly is very much a “I don't really care about the game or if i win or lose ill have fun either way” person and Anya is so prideful and insistent that Curly would be so bitter if he kept losing, like her. It becomes a repeated back and forth because Curly is adamant he just would not care cause it’s a game, even mentions he lets himself lose with Jimmy a lot and they have a better time for it, and Anya just grabs him like the Cosmo and Timmy meme and rants about the thrill of running someone's pockets dry when they land on your properties in monopoly. He is taking the piss out of her. Like I feel like their arguments are just a bit absurd most of the time and like two casual friends teasing each other's quirks.

Though I feel if they had a real argument it would feel less like an argument and more like the most tense discussion of "I feel" statements and dead end routes. I can only really see them "arguing" about Curly's own health. Not pertaining to the games events (I tend to answer these type of asks as if it is prior or didn't happen), Curly does just seem to neglect himself in favor of is duties routinely, subsequentially impacting those duties. It's a lot of "I feel like you should rest more." or "I feel like this is not healthy for you." from Anya that inevitably turn into "Captain, this is not a good habit to have". Curly is a lot of "I feel fine"s that turn into "Please do not worry about me, Nurse Anya." and a sort of petty professionalism they put on when the other is being stubborn about the issue. I feel like he's also just a bit of a nag since he tries really hard to not be stern so its a sort of pestering but that's not Anya's specific.

They just don't seem like the types to bicker with each other because I don't think they want to be heated with each other, like arguing or you'd have to push them to that point unless it's something silly, in which the arguments sound like "I know you are but what am I >:)".
