Undertale NPC Popularity Tumblr Tournament FAQ

Hello! This pinned message will be updated throughout the tournament while I realize things to put here. Also all of these questions except one aren't actually Frequently Asked, they haven't even been asked once! So I'm kinda lying about this being an FAQ heehee.

What is this?

This blog is a series of Tumblr posts, posted frequently, that feature polls to vote on pitting two characters from the game Undertale against each other in a popularity contest. The results of these polls are then used to instruct the results of a tournament bracket, which is posted after each tournament round, with the end goal of finding out who the most popular Undertale character is!

What characters are featured in this tournament?

Ideally, this tournament includes every character in the Undertale game that is "a minor NPC". Now that's kinda vague so my best approximation of a solid definition for this would be "Characters that are exclusively featured in the overworld", that mean no characters that appear in battle and no characters that are shopkeepers. For example, NPCs you fight that appear in the overworld after you complete an area are not included because they are featured in battles.

When are polls posted?

The posting schedule is 4 times a day. Every 2 hours between 2-8 PM EST.

How is this tournament set up?

This tournament features 96 characters in a double elimination format, meaning that the loser of each round is moved to a secondary bracket and must lose a second time before fully losing. 64 characters start placed in round 1, and 32 additional characters start placed in round 2, I have tried my best so that the most recognizable characters featured here are placed in this second round so that the more obscure characters are pitted against each other first.

How long is this tournament?

There will be 190 individual matches, 8 rounds in the winners bracket and 11 rounds in the losers bracket. This tournament is currently planned to last 2-3 months in total.

A small update!

Round 2 is starting soon, and to keep things moving you'll note some of the 'match' numbers will be out of order — this is intentional on my end. The generator I used has the Loser's bracket of Round 2 go first, but I'm going to be alternating it between the two brackets.

I also want to say that I recognise that a lot of the characters are 'nobodies' ppl don't care about, and in hindsight I'd have done single elim, but it's too far in to change that now. It was done like this to give everyone a chance. It's my first time running something like this, so I appreciate the patience. And please keep in mind it's just one of us actually setting up and maintaining the polls and keeping things running, and it does actually take quite a bit of time.

Guess That Ship Tournament Season 10: Submissions CLOSED!

The Concept: You describe your ship* to me, I pick out the submissions which I find most compelling and pit them against each other without revealing who they are, people vote on them, and their identities gets revealed once they’re eliminated.

Something special for this season will be a loser's bracket: the identities of the losers of Round 1 will not be revealed immediately. Instead, they will compete in their own bracket, and the winner will face against the finalists in the main bracket.

Submission Guidelines

*For the purpose of this tournament, relationships do not have to be romantic in nature. I’m sometimes going to use “ship” as a shorthand, just know I mean “relationships” in general.

Relationship can be between any number of characters.

Real people are accepted if they’ve been dead for more than 100 years.

Roleplay characters are accepted as long as the description only pertains to the characters and not the players.

OCs are accepted.

No overtly NSFW submissions. (Mentioning they have sex or are a sex worker is fine, but try to avoid anything more than that.)

Two submission per person. (I cannot enforce this on Google Forms without forcing you to log in. So just be champs and respect this rule.)

Failure to follow these guidelines may result in all of your submissions being disqualified for this season.

Summary Guidelines

Selection Process: I will read through the list of descriptions submitted without reading their names and pick the most compelling submissions. Then, I will check the name to make sure there's no repeats.

Keep it concise, but also bring something unique to the table. Make sure to describe their relationship, not just summarize the events of the story.

Previous submissions for reference. The ideal submission should be 2-3 paragraphs, but you can make it as short or long as you want. Please keep in mind the longer your submission, the less likely it is to get in.

A list of things to try to avoid can be found here.

Descriptions should be based on canon, not headcanon. (e.g. You can say “they love each other” instead of “they’re lovers” if their romantic nature is debatable.)

Avoid author commentary. (e.g. "They're canonically x," "I love them," "Play/watch/read this," etc.)

Use canonical pronouns.

Avoid identifying information or setting specific giveaways. (i.e. Ninja village, space necromancers.)

When submitting OCs, please make sure to at least put a name somewhere. (e.g. "John and Bob by anonymous" or "OCs by Joey.")

The more popular your ship is the more vague the description should be.

Exclusions

Ships that were accepted in Season 7 onwards and ships that at least reached the semifinals in Season 1-6 are not allowed. For a complete list, please look here. (No need to look through the whole list, just Ctrl+F to find the ship you want.)

Any submissions from Harry Potter will also not be included.

There should be a Tumblr poll competition about which fictional character is the biggest loser but really make sure only the losers can win so here's my proposal.

The first round every poll has two options. The loser in each poll moves onto the next bracket because anyone who wins a vote by default is disqualified as loser. Next round, the polls have three options, winners eliminated again and then new polls set up with the worst losers vs least worst but with four options per poll and it goes on like this, eliminating winners and increasing the number of choices per poll until the final round is the ten losingest losers in a single poll with the definitive loser determined by whoever has the least votes.

The ultimate loser poll, where the ultimate loser is culled from the herd of occasional winners.

there’s some somewhat recent anime episodes where there’s a lot of “I would do anything for you” “I would put my life on the line for you” and it’s just. There’s no way they’re not dating. Also they’re big scary pirates that pillage and fuck stuff up and we love that for them

They have been together committing crimes and killing people ever since childhood and they’re not about to stop any time soon

They are badass pirates who both have a huge bounty on their head. Killer's epithet is 'Massacre Soldier/Murder Mashine' (depending on the translation), so he probably got quite some blood on his hands. Kid is his captain, and has a reputation of not caring about civilian casualties and destroying more than necessary to defeat his opponent. Also, the whole crew crusified some other crew. But besides being murderous, these two care so fucking much about each other! They've been friends (lovers?) since childhood and would literally do anything for each other, including dying. Kid will destroy anyone who laughs at his partner (how he canonically calls Killer), lets himself be recaptured just after he escaped prison to save his partner, and Killer eats a faulty SMILE fruit that stops him from portraying any other emotion than laughing, makes him unable to swim, and doesn't gain him any powers, just to get a CHANCE to save his captain. When Kid saw him laugh while he obviously didn't want to, it broke his heart in many pieces (and ours with it). It's true love, your honor. True, murderous love.

For Wylan van Eck and Jesper Fahey:

Jesper is a sharpshooter that never misses a hit, Wylan is a demolitions expert, once Wylan sang a national anthem to save Jesper from some guards

So Jesper is a high profile member of this gang called the Dregs, he’s their sharpshooter. He also has a serious gambling problem and actually enjoys his job because it gives him the same adrenaline high. Wylan is brought in on this big impossible heist, officially as the demolitions expert, but really because he’s actually the runaway son of the man who is meant to pay them and so he’s insurance that they get their money. They are both incredibly talented at destruction, undermining governments and killing several people. At one point they end up with a tank. At another Wylan makes a chemical concoction that gives off the appearance of plague scars in a city with serious plague related trauma, setting off all the alarms and sending the whole place into utter anarchy. Jesper shoots a man around a corner. Also this quote exists. Jesper:‘I'm not big on killing unconscious men." Wylan:"We could wake them up." This is even funnier when you consider that Wylan is a skinny freckled ginger who’s basically a glorified chemist and possesses no social skills. I love him so much.

That quote from the book where Jesper was like "I'm not gonna kill unconscious people" about a bunch of knocked out enemies and Wylan was like "Well can't we wake them up then?"

God: “He’s incredibly considerate and nice to everyone, fellow students and school staff. Has a party to celebrate his new place and ends up setting off the smoke detector and making the whole building evacuate, but he makes sure his neighbor (who he has never met and will eventually be his boyfriend) gets out safe. He and Diew talk to each other from their own balconies and when Diew sets boundaries (talking but not seeing each other’s faces) God goes beyond to respect that, going so far as hiding his face in ridiculous ways in public. He is constantly doing tiny, unsung things to make Diew comfortable and chooses their outings accordingly. He also tells this girl to end her live stream so he can call her out for violating his privacy in a very calm and concise manner without her fans seeing. He also lets his two best friends crash at his place when those two are fighting without even questioning the whole thing.”

“God uses every moment he has with Diew to make sure Diew is comfortable, but he does it in a way that’s never overbearing. He’s warm and considerate and never pushy. Nothing he does feels like a game plan to get with Diew either. He genuinely wants the boy he loves to be happy. God’s no pushover though. The first poll theme will be: Which version of the PV is better: Mirai or Diva? Direct ports from Mirai to Future Tone are excluded from this (ex: No Logic, PIANO×FORTE×SCANDAL, 1925, etc., however, Yumeyume is exempt from this because the setting and background events differ enough between Mirai and Diva to be distinguished.) The second poll theme will be: What is the best PV in Project Diva? This will be done in a single elimination bracket style, however, 12 losers from the first round will be selected RANDOMLY to compete again in a short bonus round after round one. The songs are categorized from A-Z. Project Diva X PVs are not included, nor are songs in Future Tone without original PVs (ex: Francisca, slump, Song of Eternity, etc., however, World's End Umbrella is exempt from this because it still has Diva parts to its video and is thusly unique to the game), nor are the DLC songs from the original three Project Diva games that weren't brought to AFT, FT, or MM (ex: RIP=RELEASE, Go My Way!!, Relations, etc.). Additionally, the songs that give the "Change video" option (Electric Angel and Requiem for the Phantasma) will only have one of their PVs as an option, and it will be the more commonly recognized one whether or not that's the default. However, Project Diva F/F 2nd videos such as World's End Dance Hall and Kagerou Daze will be included, as well as songs in AFT that aren't in FT such as Kagamine Hachi Hachi Flower Fight and Saturation. The signature MM songs are also included (Alien Alien, Catch the Wave, HIBANA, ROKI, Teo, 39 Music!). And remember, do NOT take the quality of the song itself into account. This is all about the music videos. This poll will be exempt from the usual time rules because there are 244 PVs on this list and it would take ages, so each poll will instead be uploaded once every two hours. However, each poll will still last for 1 week, and the first poll of each round will be posted at the usual start time of 8:00 AM CDT. The third poll theme will be: What is the best module from the song? This poll will be full of all the songs in Project Diva Future Tone (and Arcade) with multiple modules, whether that's songs with multiple singers (ex: ACUTE, Colorful×Sexy, Erase or Zero, etc.), songs with sub outfits (ex: Pinky Swear, Fire◎Flower, Glory 3usi9, etc), songs where you can change the singer (ex: 1925, Snowman, Tricolore Airline, etc.) or songs that just have different outfits depending on the game like The World is Mine and World's End Dancehall. Songs that did not receive signature modules that have multiple (ex: Out of Eden, Knight of Light, Deep Sea City Underground, etc.) will not be included.

The fourth poll theme will be: What is the best module for each Vocaloid? This will be done in a single elimination bracket style, and will be done one Vocaloid at a time. They will be organized in the order they appear in FT/MM. Only modules in FT/MM will be included (including all the DLC song packs). Modules with alternate versions will have both versions present in the poll. Extra characters will not be included in this bracket, nor will Miku, because a "What is the best Miku module" bracket has been done on Tumblr before. So this bracket just concerns Rin, Len, Luka, KAITO, and MEIKO. This poll will be exempt from the usual time rules because there are 210 modules on this list and it would take ages, so each poll will instead be uploaded once every two hours. However, each poll will still last for 1 week, and the first poll of each round will be posted at the usual start time of 8:00 AM CDT. Additionally, a results post will be made at the end of each round, and will be made in between each Vocaloid.

The fifth poll theme will be: What is the best of the Project Diva games? This poll will be segmented in a few different parts, pitting Project Diva games in the same group (ex: Project Diva vs Project Diva 2nd vs Project Diva extend, Project Diva F vs Project Diva F 2nd, etc.), and after a best is decided among the groups, the winners of each group will be pitted against each other to determine the very best. ALL of the console Project Diva games are included in this (Spin-offs like Project Mirai, Miku Flick, etc. will not be included). The arcade Project Diva games, however, will not be included. Project Diva games that only have one in its group (ex: Project Diva X) will only be in the final poll competition.

The sixth poll theme will be: What is the best chance time event? This will be done in a single elimination bracket style. This will take all of the songs in Project Diva F and F 2nd (minus the F version of Po Pi Po) and rank their chance time events. The only song left out will be Kagerou Daze, because the chance time happens at the very beginning and changes the entire music video. Aside from that, however, all other songs in Project Diva F and F 2nd will be included, including all F 2nd DLC songs. This is SOLELY ranking how the chance time changes the video and what happens, not the entire video, nor the song itself. This poll will be exempt from the usual time rules because there are 93 songs on this list and it would take ages, so each poll will instead be uploaded once every two hours. However, each poll will still last for 1 week, and the first poll of each round will be posted at the usual start time of 8:00 AM CDT. Additionally, a results post will be made at the end of each round.

The seventh poll theme will be: Which producer would you rather see more from in Project Diva? This will go through all of the producers that have 1-3 songs across all of the Project Diva games (this will include Project Diva X, as well as all DLC locked songs; however, songs that are exclusive to Project Diva X medleys will not be considered). The way the producers will be organized is yet to be determined. In each poll, all of the songs in Project Diva by the mentioned artists will be listed (underneath the poll will be the P name and all of their songs. ex: rerulili: Knife; Holy Lance Explosion Boy). If a song was collaborated on by two producers, that song will be listed under both of them (ex: under Moja-P would be both Kagamine Hachi Hachi Flower Fight and Holy Lance Explosion Boy, even though Kagamine Hachi Hachi Flower Fight will also be under Niregiru, and Holy Lance Explosion Boy will also be under rerulili). In cases like Hitoshizuku-P and Yama∆, and Giga-P and Reol, however, they will only be listed as groups since they always collaborate together, and will not be listed separately. This is NOT a bracket, however, all of the winners will later be put into large polls (number per each is TBA, it will likely be 4 or 5), and will then compete once again to determine the ultimate winners.

The eighth poll theme will be: Which form of the module is best? This will go through all of the Project Diva modules in AFT/FT that have alternate versions (ex: have "alt"s like "Pink Pops" and "Nagisa Replica", have modified colors in an alternate form like "Rei-no-Sakura" and "Star Vocalist", are the Miku P-Style modules, etc. This does not include related modules like Snow Mikus [Snow Miku 2013 and 2018, however, will be judged, because they have alternate versions], Racing Mikus, Space Channel Mikus, etc.). Each poll will only be between the original form and the alternate form. It will cover every Vocaloid, and will go one Vocaloid at a time.

The ninth poll theme will be: What is the best song in Project Diva? This will be done in a single elimination bracket style. Songs from ALL Project Diva games will be in the bracket, including Project Diva X. However, DLC locked songs that didn't come back in any other game or form (ex: Butchigiri ni Shite Ageru, Relations, Sharing the World, etc.) will not be included (songs that are not DLC that don't return in other games like Kagerou Daze will show up, however). Duplicates/alternate forms of songs (ex: Sakura no Ame standard edit, F version of Po Pi Po, X version of The First Sound, Senbonzakura, etc.) will also not be included (Cantarella ~Grace Edition~ will be included, however, because it's decently different from the original version). The Project Diva X medleys will also not be included, nor will the songs in them be, unless the full length version of them is in another Project Diva game. Spin-off games like Project Mirai will also not be taken into account in this bracket. This poll will be exempt from the usual time rules because there are 250+ songs on this list and it would take ages, so each poll will instead be uploaded once every two hours. However, each poll will still last for 1 week, and the first poll of each round will be posted at the usual start time of 8:00 AM CDT. Additionally, a results post will be made at the end of each round.

Remember, this is the losers bracket. We are matching up the winners of round L7. The winners will move on to round L9, and the losers will be revealed and eliminated.

Character 201: they're an android they're very smart and very kind they have a switch that makes them crack bad jokes and laugh they used to have amnesia and didn't know they're an android at first as a result they have a pet falcon they're the weird one in their group, but the others accepted them after a while

Character 87: Exiled from her village after being falsely accused of murdering the head of her village, she found her way to the main setting of the story and joined a dance troupe. She attracted the attention of a pair of red-haired twins who loved her and was set for a good life until she was kidnapped and forced to have the main antagonist child, after which she was thrown away into an asylum. She escaped from there with the twins, and began a life long quest to protect her daughter, knowing that her father wanted to use her to establish an iron grip over his country. She and her daughter are virtually identical, both being very petite with long blonde hair. She later uses this to her advantage to take her daughter's place so she can escape her father's grasp once and for all. She causes a riot and goes out in a blaze of glory, not only thwarting all of the antagonist's plans, but also taking his life. She can dual-wield knives and is incredibly smart. Also since the setting of the story is during World War Two, and the main antagonist allies himself with the Nazis, she does in fact, kill a Nazi. Good for her!

"Two Sides of the Same Coin"- Two things that are regarded as part of the same thing. Even if they're very different, they have at least one common thread that helps them fit into this trope.

as for similarities, they were both innocent children set up to have a good and upright life, but experienced a loss that set them on a path that lead both of them to become the leaders of two of the worst/most evil organizations in the world. their martial arts abilities are equal to each other. and they're canonically soulmates and say that they're the only ones who can truly understand each other."

"Josuke Higashikata is a high-school boy with a large pompadour living in the town of Morioh. He lives alone with his mother, as his father wasn't in the picture. His ability, Crazy Diamond, allows him to repair or heal anything he touches with it. Because his grandfather was murdered before he could use his power to save him, Josuke vowed to carry on his legacy by protecting the town. Yoshikage Kira is a 33-year-old office worker who just wants to live a quiet life. He's also a serial killer who kills women discretely and goes on 'dates' with their severed hands. His ability, Killer Queen, assists in his murders by allowing him to silently "explode" anything he touches, leaving almost no evidence.

Naturally, there are many parallels and contrasts between Josuke and Kira. Both want to live a "quiet life", but while Josuke cannot live quietly because he feels he must protect his town from supernatural threats, Kira can't live quietly because his murdering habits put him in danger of discovery.

Josuke is often seen as a delinquent but has a clear heart of gold, and Kira puts on an incredibly rehearsed act of being an ordinary office worker but is far from an upstanding member of society in private. Kira's powers allow him to annihilate things and is born from wanting to indulge his urges with no repercussions. It's also one of the more strangely adaptable abilities, fitting his shrewd and evasive nature — he has several different "bomb" types that emerge over the course of the story.

Meanwhile, Crazy Diamond allows Josuke to repair things (even things that Kira has almost completely destroyed). The power was developed when Josuke was inspired by another person's kindness as a child. It's an altruistic ability, and literally selfless — Josuke cannot use his ability to heal himself. And while Crazy Diamond never "evolves", Josuke uses its base power in increasingly clever ways.

And of course, one last contrast between the two is friendship. Josuke befriends many of the people he comes to blows with, and even the people who don't like him often develop a begrudging respect for him.

Kira, however, has no close friends, as he tries his best to be perfectly average and middling. The only reason he has protection against Josuke and the others is because his father actively finds new enemies to fight Josuke — most of whom have no real allegiance towards Kira personally."

Submitted problematic elements: the protagonist spends spends a good chunk of time considering whether to kill the titular mermaid and sell her meat, before settling on becoming a serial killer. Also she technically owns a sentient being so there's that.

Submitted content warnings: General violence, blood, and light gore. Anti-cannibalism propaganda.

Submitted propaganda: It's a cute and short story about beauty and sacrifice. The setting has its own funky logic, but it engrosses you right away with the glib and fucked up protag. Sort of a modern day Gift of the Magi innit.

thank you for voting, everyone!! well done for campaigning for your characters and getting them through round one. some characters put up very tough fights, and others.....maybe weren't as evenly matched as they maybe could have been, haha.

before the main brackets continue, heres an extra chance to get two of the eliminated characters back in the running! yeah, two! ..but it might be a little confusing, so bear with me!

there will be larger polls for the loser rounds. the characters from the left who have been eliminated; Rachel Gardner, Niko, Goldia, and Aki Narukami. the characters from the right who have been eliminated; Russell Seager, Sunny, Noel Cerquetti, and Aya Drevis.

these characters will be put into two 4-option polls. one for the left side, one for the right side. for now, i'm just using the left side as an example.

this is the chance to get one of these characters back in the game if you think they didn't get justice! for the first part of the revival polls, simply vote who you want to see get a second chance, and the one with the most votes can be revived. but there's a catch. whoever is brought back will be replacing one of the characters who already survived, from their respective side.

focusing on the left side, lets say aki is gets the most votes for the character who will be given another chance...then, the next poll is to decide which of the survivors from the left side will get eliminated for her sake.

one of the characters who survived the first round will have to be eliminated to make space for the revived character! in this poll, it will clearly state that the person who gets the most votes here will be eliminated. so unlike the other polls, you'll want to avoid voting for the characters you want to win! i understand thats maybe a bit confusing - but if a poll doesnt have that added statement, its safe to assume that all other polls are just for voting the character you want to succeed. just make sure to read carefully during the revival round! vote for characters you actively dislike, ones you like the least out of the options, ones youve never heard of….just dont vote for the character youre rooting for when it says "you are voting for a character to be eliminated" .and dont get mad at me if you click wrong, im trying to make it as clear as i can.....

if claire elford got voted the most in this example, then aki and claire would simply swap places - claire would get eliminated, and aki would be back in the brackets up against madotsuki in the next main round. of course, im just using aki and claire as...... examples.
