Jan 14, 2022 Creative Multiverse presents: #Artuary2022 day 14 (The Valley) Van Nuys Drive-In was one of many Pacific drive-ins that had murals on their screen towers. It opened in 1948 and parked 891 cars. It lost its mural and original screen tower when it became a tri-plex drive-in. During its last year, it was the last drive-In located in the valley area of Los Angeles. As Pacific Theatres closed the theater, its marquee said “closed for the season”. That season never came. The Van Nuys Drive-In sat empty for a few years and was being used to store cars from a nearby dealership. “Kieran Wright has been in Los Angeles for only three years but has fallen head over heels for his adopted hometown’s landmarks. The 28-year-old from New Zealand spent this spring and summer meticulously crafting miniatures of some of his favorite L.A. places including the Tiki Ti in East Hollywood and the New Beverly Cinema in Fairfax. ‘I have this deep appreciation of Southern California’s iconic architecture,’he says. ‘I love driving around looking for old buildings.’”

The six figures represent the Greek astronomer #Hipparchus (about 125 B.C.), #NicolausCopernicus (1473-1543), #GalileoGalilei (1564-1642), #JohannesKepler (1571-1630), #IsaacNewton (1642-1727), and #JohnHerschel (1738-1822). #AlbertEinstein was considered for inclusion, but planers ultimately decided it would be inappropriate to feature someone still alive (the monument was completed in 1934; Einstein died in 1955). #ArmillarySphere - On top of the #AstronomersMonument is a 900-pound, hollow bronze armillary sphere that was installed in 1991 (replacing the original cement-cast and copper-covered sphere which had degraded). An armillary sphere is an astronomical instrument composed of rings representing celestial latitude, longitude, and the ecliptic.
