I cannot resist this one, as I know where it is and a little something about it. This was originally the Golden Gate Theater, located on Whittier Blvd. in East Los Angeles. Built in 1927, there was originally a retail building -- the Vega Building -- surrounding it. Built in the Spanish Churrigueresque style, it was a picture palace and a fixture of the neighborhood for many years.
By the time of the Whittier Narrows Earthquake, it had ceased showing films and hosted a church. When the building was deemed too damaged to be occupied, the church and the business in the Vega Building had to vacate. The Vega building was demolished in 1992, and the Golden Gate narrowly escaped destruction itself. The building sat vacant until 2011, when it was announced CVS would move into the space. It’s not what the preservationists wanted, but it’s a new lease on life for the building and if you walk inside, it’s not the usual chain store look. The proscenium has been restored and houses the pharmacy, the ceiling is intact, not covered with drop panels and photos of the original in its glory days are near the cashier stations.
But, yeah, I could see Lucifer making a cold medicine run.
something evil is afoot in East LA
