Bonus internet points will be awarded to anyone who actually tries this exercise before voting.
Assume you need to get the spelling at least somewhat close, and if a character has multiple names, only one counts. Also, if a character doesn't have a canonical name, I'm sorry, but "that guy's wife" doesn't count.
For reference, if you can name the 9 members of the Fellowship, the eponymous Hobbit and his 13 dwarf buddies, 3 prominent women, and the guy who runs the Rivendell B&B, that's 27 characters right there. And you probably also know the name of a dragon.
For further reference, Tolkien Gateway has 637 (!!) pages dedicated to Third Age characters. (Don't click that link until you've voted, of course)
Edit: Your humble pollmaker gave this a try, and got as far as 73 before deciding she was too tired to keep trying to remember dwarf and Silm names. If you also want to share (and don't mind people being incredulous at your having forgot ____), pastebin allows you to paste text and share it for free. :)

Reading The Hobbit has a warm, cozy feeling to it, like sitting by a fireplace and downing a warm mug of hot chocolate. There are times when you want to cry, times when you want to laugh, times when you want to fight alongside Thorin’s Company. But at the end of the story, you realise that you will never experience that, because The Hobbit is fictional in reality, but so real in the heart and mind.
Reading The Lord of The Rings has a cool feeling, neither warm nor cold, but a comfortable one; it’s as if you’re sitting by a window, staring into the rain, and wishing you could go outside and relish in the rain but you can’t because it’s cold. There are times when you want to laugh, cry, dine with the Fellowship, fight with the Fellowship. But you can’t, because The Lord of The Rings is only a figment lodged in your heart, tucked away in a cozy spot.
Reading The Silmarillion has the feel of sitting in an enormous library almost abandoned, and fishing out an old, dusty book from a nook long forgotten, written about the history of the world. There are cases when you want to delve into that world and explore it, revel in it, fight it, love it, yell at the people in it. But you can never do that, because it is a history long past, existing only in the minds of very few.
Reading the old stories narrating the entire history of Arda has the feel of travelling back in time to the Library of Alexandria, reading and studying all the library can give. There are times when you want to cry, mourn, grieve, celebrate, laugh, revel in the world. But you can never, as that world, those people, are all part of your heart and mind, tucked away into the most precious part of you.
Reading the legendarium doesn’t make you want to be a part of that world because you love it. It makes you want to be a part of that world because the characters are normal people, like you, who got roped into an unlikely adventure, forever narrated in song, poems, ballads and laments.
They are simple stories, of simple people, in a simple world, where if you existed, you could have been one of those souls both fortunate and unfortunate.
Reading the legendarium makes you want to be part of it, because it makes you think you can survive it.
And certainly, if you have read this amazing mythological masterpiece, you absolutely can survive it.

Glorfindel, Lord of the House of the Golden Flower
I used the same general design I've used for him before. Lots of gold and floral motifs. I wanted a flowing sense in his clothing and I wanted to make him look like he was dancing as much as fighting.
Glorfindel felt like a nice choice for the New Year.

Ægthelion & Glorfindel; Warden of the Great Gate and Chief of the Golden Flower.
First day of not having school!! Celebrated by drawing these two creatures in armor and battle hair😌😌
One of them likes ornaments a little more than practicality, the other likes sharp objects. Both die.

Yes, yes, if I were a Gondolindrim I would be super pissed at him… But I'm not, so I can be controversial and say that I kinda love Maeglin T_T

glorfindel strikes me as the kind of guy whose love language is physical touch so a few weeks ago i did some rough sketches just to explore that and how he'd interact with all the different ppl in his life 🤔

Wanted to post my WIP of Lord Galdor of the House of the Treeeeeee
Tumblr media
He's not quite as beefy as I would like, but I have no in between when drawing beefiness. One can either be REALLY beefy or not beefy at all.
Still need to do some shading and add some glossy highlights. Also I want to use the paler yellow in the background somehow but I haven't decided what I'm doing yet.
I did use a general reference for this, but I'm not sure who the OG artist is. (Whoever you are, I enjoy your work!)
I'm so slow at digital art and also I'm not used to colouring stuff since I usually just do plain pencil on paper (I also don't usually shade 🤷🏻‍♀️)
I actually kinda like his hair without any shading??? But it will look much better with shading

Ahhh first post on Tumblr (*nervous chuckles*), a Glorthelion fan art for one of my favorite talented writers @a-tehta !
After reading the amazing fic "Sparring" on my bday (yes I'm the same birthday girl in the comment lol), I just couldn't stop imagining their first night on the ship & how great it would feel again to be able to snuggle together after centuries separation😍! So I just have to draw it down (*chuckles again*)

Eöl tries to kill Maeglin. Art by Giovanni Calore
Then Eöl looked into the eyes of King Turgon, and he was not daunted, but stood long without word or movement while a still silence fell upon the hall; and Aredhel was afraid, knowing that he was perilous. Suddenly, swift as serpent, he seized a javelin that he held hid beneath his cloak and cast it at Maeglin, crying:
'The second choice I take and for my son also! You shall not hold what is mine!'
But Aredhel sprang before the dart, and it smote her in the shoulder; and Eöl was overborne by many and set in bonds, and led away, while others tended Aredhel. But Maeglin looking upon his father was silent.

☀︎Glorfindel and Asfaloth
Tumblr media
"Glorfindel was among the mightiest Elves, and once the lord of the house of the Golden Flower in Gondolin. After a valiant death in the First Age, he was re-embodied by the Valar and returned to Middle-earth millennia afterward."
Can you all guess that I like elves or do I need to make more elf related art? In any case, do expect more of it. Anyhow, I am a day late to wish Tolkien a happy birthday, so I hope this can serve as an apology! Happy Tolkien day! Also first post of 2025, woooho
Truthfully though, this did not turn out as I wanted it to, but I still like it. I'll do better next time
