Btw , jay seems to have kept his new hair in the chinese ver unlike the korean ver which changed him back to his og version for some reason. I've seen so many differences in the chinese ver atp i think they're experiencing somewhat of a different story compared to us.

You can even notice the little piece of hair they forgot to remove on his left in the kr version in the bottom comparison lol.

Jay Hong is a wasted character

exempting the fact that i am an avid fan of jay, he wouldve easily been one of the most indispensable character of lookism if only PTJ just knows how to write him, or actually has the balls to write him a bit more properly. he would've been a great queer representation and he would've had a bit more depth as a character if the author just wasn't half-assing his character so much. from the earliest up to the recent chapter (532) it's just sooo apparent that he's a moneygrab fanservice slop, and as someone who have loved him for so many years i want to put this out here. it's just sad that such a great character is used just as a mere plot device that is leveraged by the MC.

i understand the political climate in south korea and how the general public might perceive queer characters but for something as progressive as lookism, who had integrated so much real societal issues in its material, it is just sad that his "arc" (if i can even call it that) was so vaguely implied. outside of the ships his character would have been more meaningful to more audiences if he was even a tiny bit more well-written. i know everyone is always on the edge of their seats thinking he might have a chance for an end game, but it is so impossible, and it is fine but i just hope he wont just be wasted away like this. its been a decade and i expect only growth and progress for the author and the fandom.

I read a webtoon entitled Lookism (you can read it in bahasa http://m.webtoons.com/id/drama/lookism/list?title_no=532 I dont know they have the english version or not) In some parts when the character gets a bully, it is an awfulness LIKE SERIOUSLY I THOUGHT THAT THIS WORLD IS A COMFY-PRETTY PLACE WITH NICE PEOPLE IN IT. I cant even imagine how cruel this world is. The webtoon is based in Korea (maybe, Im not really sure) Do those things (on the webtoon) really happen in Korea?

i feel like now is the perfect time to talk about how Daniel and Dugene are foils of each other.

Eugene is a genuine, albeit tragic, villain that runs unethical businesses and is generally uncaring towards the people he hurts. I'd like to clarify that a large part of South Korean culture is their "pretty privilege" system. In very brief terms, good-looking people get away with crimes/bullying/being rude/acting haughty, whereas people less conventionally attractive are made to believe they do not have the "right" or "permission" to act out of line. Everyone must act within their category of attractiveness to put it simply. What makes Eugene such a good villain, is the fact that he is not "getting away" with anything because he is pretty (he is canonically "unattractive"). He gets away with things because of his skills in dealing with people and running his gang. It speaks to how powerful he truly is. He doesn't need attractiveness or physical strength to be powerful.

Another thing about Eugene is that he fully embraces his position as a villain. He knows he commits serious crimes. From a young age, he has been prepared for death. He is ready to be beat up and made to suffer is necessary.

Daniel, on the other hand, started out as a dorky high schooler and happened to end up in dangerous situations. His first rival was Zack, who probably has some degree of pretty privilege. It makes sense his first rival was a school bully because they would get away being mean if they were good looking. As Daniel explores life as a pretty person, he realizes it's not all it's cracked up to be and discovers the lookism. The problem with Daniel (that's not really his fault) is that he is slowly becoming the kind of person he sought to get rid of. He has to become a fighter and start a gang to beat the other ones. He has to be violent even though he knows it's not right. He has not fully come to terms with the fact that he IS a gangster and has committed crimes, even if they were not as bad as other people's.

Eugene accepts the fact that he is a criminal while abandoning his old life as a victim, while Daniel is still in denial, is mentally unprepared for gang life even after everything he has been through, and subconsciously clings to his old life. They were both ordinary students who changed their lives, but one was on purpose. They are foils yah~ :)
