Asked and Answered: Kathryn Morgan
*To be honest I don’t really want to talk about this topic anymore after this. There are people who agree with me and people who don’t. That’s fine! So unless another ask is bringing up something substantially different from what’s already been said down here, I’m not answering any additional asks on this precise situation. As always, hate mail with abusive language is automatically deleted.*
Kathryn Morgan is like the American version of the Joy Womack story😂 Idk what really happened; if what she said is true then I feel for her. But the fact that she didn’t go to company class much after getting pulled from Firebird (pretty early in the season) and neglected to mention it UNTIL MCB dancers called her out, just LOL. If you want roles so bad, why wouldn’t you go to class? It just makes you look lazy and indifferent to your work, no bloody wonder they didn’t cast her anymore. pt2 of KM ask: I’m pretty sure not going to class would get you demoted or fired in other companies. “I knew I wasn’t coming back next season, so I didn’t want to go to class”. So You decide not to go to class after not being given one or two roles (which happen all the time) and THEN complain about not getting roles afterwards? And saying she got applauded every time she went on stage on her opening night and wanting to go on tour “Kathryn Morgan and Friends” lmao, doesn’t sit with me right
I didn’t even know about the company class aspect; I only watched her video about it. That makes it even worse. Yes, her ‘justification’ for why she kept deserving roles is what rubbed me the wrong way as well.
I’m impressed you made a critical analysis of Kathryn Morgan’s behavior/attitude. There is no denying she’s had a sh** time with illness and a toxic environment at MCB, but she has always had a very entitled attitude and I’ve never seen her take ownership for anything. The least she could do is say she hadn’t fully considered the reality of re-joining a company after a long break with her illness and she had unrealistic expectations.
Thanks for this. I totally agree, I don’t think there is really anything wrong with calling out MCB for being s***** and dishonest with her. But she also always seems to have the attitude of she deserves it because of her fame, which is the main thing that I take issue with.
I’m a little confused on what you said about Katheryn Morgan. It’s mentioned in the video that A. She was promised roles in writing before the season began and B. It came to a point where she was being pulled out of roles she was already slated to dance. She also was only a soloist at NYCB because a serious medical problem cut her time there short.... I just don’t think it’s fair to take some things out of context when discussing her situation.
Hey! Thanks for this. I don’t really know what you think I took out of context. So I’m not denying that I don’t think MCB was not kind to her. They seem to have fostered a pretty toxic working environment for her. But at the same time, as she herself says in the video, she doesn’t like companies where they tell her at the beginning of the season what she’s going to dance because things change all the time. It’s not like it was in her contract to dance those roles, things can change. Some of the stuff was absolutely due to injury as well. And we don’t know if she was only a soloist NYCB because of the reason she had a serious medical problem. We don’t know if she would have continued her trajectory upwards or not. Regardless, sadly, she still doesn’t have any experience as a principal dancer.
i personally don't think kathryn morgan's situation is anywhere near joy womack's. i completely understand kathryn's frustration with mcb because they hired her as a soloist, told her she'd be cast in certain roles and made her learn them, then pulled her out last minute. i never heard her imply that she 'deserved' any roles. i would probably feel the same way in her situation. it seems cruel to me that miami would hire her only to not let her dance
To me, her stating that she was on the Today Show, and the cover of three dance magazines, and people clapped when she entered was her giving reasons of why she deserved roles.
I’m seriously concerned about the way people are responding to MCB regarding the Kathryn morgan situation... Management not giving out roles to certain dancers and telling them to lose weight is nothing new, been happening for decades. Now someone popular speaks up about it and all of a sudden they’re saying they want to boycott the company and not make any donations?? It will only hurt the dancers whom they’re trying to support esp in this pandemic. I really hope they think before they act.
I think this is an important thing to think about. As sad as it is, I think that absolutely every top-tier company would tell her to lose weight. That, sadly, is the ballet world right now.
Kathryn Morgan was on her way to greatness. Peter Martins told her, that is was only matter of time until she would have been promoted to soloist. I don't know if you watched her entire video, but she expected to dance these roles, because artistic promised her that she would. They rehearsed her, fitted her costumes and then pulled her out. I know that your asked was related to the issue of entitlement. Therefore I am saying it.
Yes, I did watch the whole video. And despite what Peter Martins told her or anything that happened, we cannot regard her as a seasoned principal because she never did reach that level. I never said that MCB didn’t act shadily, I said that I didn’t think her attitude was appropriate for the situation.
Her video is important. Ever since she posted her video, more dancers have come out and talked about the fucked up things that were said and done to them in order to make them lose weight. Her video is raising awarness and I hope more dancers realize that no contract is worth sacrificing any aspect of your health.
People have been talking about these issues for years. It is a sad reality of the ballet world. I also don’t believe sacrificing your health for a contract is the correct choice, and I’m glad she said that. But at the same time, her situation is different than most other dancers because she does have a serious issue that affects her dancing. Most professional dancers would not have to make that choice.
Thanks for the discussion everyone, and make sure you read my comment at the top before submitting more questions on it!

We Sold Our Souls to Instagram
September 2020 // Chapter 2
“No, I’m not going to pick you up.” I shook my head, visibly and audibly annoyed. “You know damn well that I’m not getting behind the wheel. I’m hanging up, sorry.”
Converting potential energy into kinetic, the iPhone X left my hand, skimming across the wave-front of my bed. My hands ruffled through my hair as I inhaled then sighed, absentmindedly channelling the virtues of cellular respiration.
Tired of this perpetual bullshit, my fingers slithered across the Ikea desk before me, eventually detecting the apple of my bedroom’s Eden: a lychee ice Puff Bar. My fingers honed in on the device, ensnaring it, raising it to my lips. A deep breath saved me from the agony of sobriety, the nicotine buzz lasting a moment. Then, it was lost.
Six soft, knuckled knocks rapped at the bedroom door. “It’s unlocked,” I shouted.
A creak later, the door swung open, revealing Adam. There was nobody else in the house anyway. With a global pandemic at large and wildfires blazing on deep into September, neither Ajay nor Cam had seen Dwight House since March. Just Adam and me.
“Yo, we out,” he said, pulling a reusable, black cloth mask under his chin. “Can’t see shit outside but we still drinking, dawg.” Ah, the charming vernacular of a Korean-American friend from the elite suburbs of the East Bay.
“It’s good. What’re we feeling today?” I had actually enjoyed the past six months with Adam—it had been a good bonding experience. Despite his rough tone around me and the rest of the guys, Adam was quite versatile in social settings, weaving between upper-class gentility at investment banking info sessions and middle-aged rednecks at gun ranges. With classical Berkeley-liberal ideologies and Wall Street Journal-reading, center-right-leaning, finance friends, Adam defied social realities.
Adam shrugged. “Could go for some Chimay. I’m feeling classy.”
“Not a bad idea at all, my friend,” I said. It had been awhile since I’d had a good beer like Chimay, and I was getting sick of Coors Banquets. “On the other hand, your timing just might be—a bad idea, I mean. Air looks cancerous outside.” Marmalade light cast by the wildfires of a fuming Earth engulfed Northern California, held in suspense by cool, Pacific layers of atmosphere. It was like we were on planet Arrakis, from Dune, or trapped in the world of David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust.
“The air low-key is cancerous. AQI is pushing 180’s right now,” said Adam, raising his eyebrows.
“Looks like an N95-kinda day. I’ve got a spare, you know,” I said, gesturing to a pile of three or so N95 masks by the lamp on my desk.
Adam waved it off. “Eh, I’m good. That’s some puss shit. Let’s just run over to Crafts and Grapes or some shit, shouldn’t take long.”
I shrugged. “So be it.”
Tossing on a pair of five-and-a-half inch inseam Lululemon shorts, I joined Adam as he hopped downstairs.
“Got keys?” he asked once we reached the door.
“Yer, we out,” I said, shaking my keys out from my shorts’ pocket to lock the front door.
“Fuck,” griped Adam. “It’s actually hot as shit out here.” Smoky, red air obscured him from sight as he craned his neck to see me.
“Hence the shorts.”
Adam squinted his eyes, pursed his lips, and jutted his head back and forth, mocking me. “For sure. Forgot your MCAT-lovin’-ass could predict the future. But really though—it’s the middle of September, dude. This shit is wrong. It’s hot as balls and California is on fire and the sky is red and fools are straight-up dying off this COVID shit.”
“And you’re still an idiot,” I said, flashing a cheeky smile.
“Are you qualified to diagnose me as an idiot?”
“Maddie would say so.”
“Hence the pet names.”
“Precisely.”
“We gotta do something about this, bruh. This shit pains me to see,” declared Adam.
“Let’s start by drinking these brews. We’ll recycle the bottles after.”
We walked east on Dwight toward Telegraph, dodging cars as we skipped across the one way street. Adam was quieter than usual, for the most part, looking up from his iPhone 11 Pro Max periodically to comment on something he’d read in the news, or the glum weather. He wore a khaki short sleeve button-up, Kapital raw denim jeans with smiley face patchwork on the back left pocket, and a pair of slip-on Nike Janoski sneakers. The jeans were nice—quite expensive, from the looks of it—but looked baggy on him. He didn’t seem to mind. In fact, all of his clothes wore a bit loose on him, akin to a fiery adolescent who’d picked out hand-me-downs from an older sibling. Who that older sibling might’ve been, I’d never know—with his unwavering demeanor, Adam always seemed like the eldest in the room.
Banking right onto Telegraph, we bore the full brunt of the veiled sun, which, though hidden behind dense clouds of smoke, now revealed its penetrating UV rays. We ducked under corrugated foam polycarbonate sheets, which lined the rooftops of mom-and-pop Telegraph shops, fending off the sun’s cancerous radiation. The insanity of the world mingled with the smoky, copper air, making me delirious. I imagined I was Mel Gibson or Tom Hardy in Mad Max, feigning off flashbacks in the Wasteland. At the corner of Telegraph and Blake street, Adam pushed and held open the door to Crafts and Grapes. Nodding my head at him in small thanks, I entered, squinting my eyes as the light shifted from hazy red to bright white inside. It was a tiny store, with two aisles directly ahead lined with candy, nuts, and other inconsequential (unless you ate too many) snacks, followed by two refrigerators: one in the back, the other on the far right. Cool, wispy air emanated from the cold storage, contrasting with the late summer atmosphere only meters behind us. A bell rang as the door squeaked to a halt, prompting the middle-eastern cashier, directly to our right, to rise from his stool and greet us. We nodded back silently, all three of us clad in masks.
Per usual, Adam took the lead, striding toward the fridge directly back. He popped open one of the see-through doors with his left hand, mapping his way through its items with his right pointer finger. Finding my eyes, Adam shook his head, indicating a lack of Chimay.
“Blue moons?” I suggested. “Mango wheats?”
Adam screwed up his face. “Fuck that. Let’s go with Lags.”
“Sure, why not.”
Adam kneeled and looped his hand through the cardboard handle of a Lagunitas StereoHopic IPA six-pack. We walked over to the register where Adam made small talk with the cashier. Eventually, he tapped his iPhone 11 to an Ingenico payment terminal, finalizing our transaction. Drinks acquired.
The bell jingled as the door shut behind us once more. We hurried home, eager to crack open our drinks, intent on droning out the blistered yonder. Adam tried to explain his enthusiasm for hoppy beers while I pretended to listen. He was distracting me, though; we both knew I couldn’t care less.
Arriving home, my keys found their way to the door, and we found our ways to the couch. A tenor beep resounded through our living room as Adam’s iPhone connected to an old speaker via bluetooth. “Street Lights” by Kanye West filled the air, followed by carbon dioxide bubbles freed by an unlikely liberator—the bottle opener.
Let me know
Do I still got time to grow?
Things ain’t always set in stone
That be known let me know
I found myself back in the hand-me-down BMW 330i, with her, the white wire packed into the lightning port of my iPhone, transmitting cosine waves that replicated the robotic voice I was listening to in my living room.
“Stop!” she cried, thrusting herself back against beige, leather seats. She wanted me to press the brakes. I had to stop the car, right, stop the car. Where were the brakes?
She was beautiful, of course.
Dark, brown hair fell over eyes of the same color, guarded by double-lids that I wish she hadn’t paid for.
Hardly anyone would notice the difference, but I did, and it hurt to know that she didn’t love them.
I loved them, unconditionally, but she loved the brakes.
Needed to find them.
We’d shared a large bowl of Marafuku’s acclaimed Hakata Tonkotsu DX ramen. I’d let her eat most of it, sneaking my chopsticks in for bites at intervals.
“Pennsylvania?” I shook my head.
“What, you’ve never been?” She tilted hers. “You’ll love it. Come with me.”
“You’re crazy,” I said, smiling. “My MCAT summer is coming up.”
She rolled her eyes. “Then I’ll help you study for it. Duh.”
“I’m sure Brandon would love that.”
“Will he? All the way from San Francisco?”
“He’ll make the trip.”
“Not if you do,” she said, melting my mind.
I was dizzy, sleepy, lost, a newborn. Vulnerable. And I couldn’t seem to find them.
I’m just not there in the streets
I’m just not there
Life’s just not fair
Life’s just not fair
Sonorant chimes reverberated in my ears as Adam clinked his glass bottle to mine. “Cheers,” he said with a nod.
“Cheers,” I echoed. Leaning my head back, I swallowed, allowing the cool liquid down my esophagus and into my gut.
“You good?” he prodded.
“Yeah,” I replied, my voice cracking a little. I cleared my throat.
“Pretty hoppy, huh?”
I took another sip, licking my lips after. “Quite. I suppose we knew what we were getting ourselves into. You know, given the ‘StereoHopic’.”
“You right.”
“Yeah.”
“Yo,” said Adam. “On another note—might be going in on an addy deal with Grace if you’re tryna hop in.”
I scratched my head. While I wouldn’t have any major exams in the near future (although midterms for my biochem course [MCB 102, for my fellow pre-med students at Cal] were slated for October sixteenth), I certainly had errands that might be eased by a twenty milligram dose of extended-release Adderall. There’s nothing like a thorough room-cleaning session when you’re high on stimulant drugs.
The first time I ever tried Adderall must’ve been during my freshman year, back in 2017. Midterm season was approaching—come to think of it, that was around this time that year—and our generous friend, Grace, was kind enough to grant me a ten milligram pill of instant-release Adderall. Grace and I, along with Adam and perhaps Ajay, too, were partaking in a midnight study session at Moffitt Library, which was open twenty-four-seven—prior to the pandemic. I popped the pill, chased it down with a Javiva drink from Peet’s, and got to work.
Twenty minutes later I began to feel its effects as the amphetamine altered monoamines in my brain, releasing surplus dopamine into my many synaptic clefts. Optimism filled me to the brim and my vision bent inward. I saw nothing but the iPad in front of me, my mind enamored by golgi apparatuses and various protein structures. The stimulant saturated me with a profound appreciation for all thoughts that meandered into my head; a giddiness originated in my heart, spreading down my arms, my legs, and outward across my skull, contracting then expanding once more. It was artificial love.
Eventually, I was distracted. Grace’s dilated pupils stared into mine as she chattered away about Lin-Manuel Mir-something and a hurricane in Puerto Rico. After a second or two, my attention snapped away from cell membranes, landing instead on her words. The words of a girl from Colorado with a soft spot for the snow. I’d met Grace via Adam during Orientation Week and she’d quickly become one of my favorite people.
Gingerbread specks stippled her face like a George Seurat painting, fractal constellations arising as my eyes outlined her cheekbones. Gaps between long, chocolate locks revealed sepia collarbones, lined with descendants of the freckles on her face. A white Nike Alex Morgan soccer jersey overlaid the loose sweatpants that hung from her hips, held up by drawstrings I almost hoped would fail, concealing proportions that emulated golden ratios. Stained, white, laceless Vans hugged unpainted toes that tapped together when she spoke. Lips that scorned the artificially enlarged mouths of Instagram influencers communicated messages I was only barely beginning to listen to. She was the love interest of a nineties’ coming-of-age motion picture. But she wasn’t mine.
You know, I thought Adam might’ve loved her, but it was hard to tell when he was cycling through hookups with three different girls at a time. Come to think of it, I didn’t know if Adam loved anyone. A talker, yes; a charmer, certainly; but a romantic, I really didn’t think so.
He spent a lot of his time with her, no doubt. And she cared for him—anyone could see it. But she knew as well as I did that his head wasn’t in it. He wasn’t looking for love. He wanted to graduate, make money—to be someone. Sex seemed like nothing more than a physical need to him. I don’t think anyone would’ve described Adam as an emotionally vulnerable guy, and I don’t think anyone thought that emotion was what he kept those girls around for.
But at the same time, anyone could’ve seen what I saw in the way he bounced when she was around. Anyone could’ve heard the way he spoke about her. She meant something to him. But when you asked him about it, he’d brush it off; she wasn’t his type, or he had commitment issues (jokingly—but hey, grain of truth in everything).
Maybe she was his distraction from ambition—his distraction from latex-wrapped, emotionally removed nights and Wall Street Journal mornings, just as she was my distraction from cell structures.
For a good hour-and-a-half, Grace entertained me with conversation regarding natural disasters across the West; Broadway musical comparisons between Hamilton and Sunday in the Park with George; and the latest updates on Cal’s women’s soccer team, of which she was a huge fan. The Adderall certainly kept me focused, although not necessarily on my coursework.
“Let me know,” said Adam, tipping the bottle into the corner of his mouth. “I’m boutta text her back.”
I looked up from my lap at Adam. Right, I thought. “Sure, I could be down. Why not. Think you can pick me up two? I have some errands to run.”
“Twenty milligram XR work?” he asked as he tapped along the screen of his iPhone.
“That’ll do.”
The room went quiet for twenty to twenty five seconds as I was confirmed as an accomplice in the drug deal.
“What’s she been up to?” I asked.
“Hm?” he noised, raising his eyebrows without looking up.
“Grace,” I said. “Haven’t seen her much.”
He shrugged. “Not much, I guess. Drinking a solid amount though, from what I’ve seen.”
“Makes three of us.”
“Yeah,” he said, feigning a smile. “What about yours?”
“Maddie?”
“Yeah.”
I took a deep breath—inhaling, holding to the count of four, exhaling. “Not much of a difference, to be honest.”
“It’s not her fault, you know.”
“I know,” I breathed.
“Then talk to her.”
“It’s not like that,” I mumbled.
Adam paused.
I stared at my feet. “I’m sorry, Adam.”
He squinted. “The fuck you sorry for?”
“You know.”
He waved his hand aside, brushing it off. “I’m not tripping. Talk to her. Before I do it myself.”
I forced a smile. “Maybe it’s better off that way.”
“Here,” he said, handing me a two-foot-tall bong and lighter from under the coffee table. “Take it.”
Couldn’t stay away. My fingers gripped the paraphernalia as he withdrew. My heart quickened as the impending drug interaction approached. When it reached my lips, I lit, then inhaled, holding to the count of four, and then some. Blurry feelings rushed my mind as states of sufferance gave way to sedated nebulas, teaching me forgetfulness.

🐭 • So while I love talking about my muses and plotting stuff with others, it is also true that I have a bit of a wishlist going on in my head. So, to make things easier for everyone here, I’ll just post some stuff I have in mind to ease up future interactions!
General Plot Ideas.
Scott getting the chance of doing things during the SoT game outside of watching over Kupa Keep’s shop (i.e. joining the New Kid or some other kid’s party for a quest).
Scott butting heads with bigger kids that try to bully him because he won’t let others try to intimidate him or other kids (and maybe becoming friends with the bully).
Scott meeting other kid superheroes and working with them/taking notes from them!!
Bradley breaking into random places just out of curiosity and to annoy others (but especially out of curiosity because he’s an alien from outer space).
Space adventures with Bradley!! Him interacting with other alien muses or just humans traveling through space and being unlucky enough to come across the cereal superhero.
Pip playing dodgeball again, whether because eomeone else pushed him into playing or because he is discovered to be a dodgeball champion.
Pip softening up on muses that try bullying him but he treats like equals instead of like bad people.
Pip just... making friends man, give him a chance.
Character-Specific Plot Ideas.
Pip paying the local graveyard a visit because he likes taking care of the gravestones (and copy with his sheer loneliness like he used to do back in England) and encountering Kenny (who he will ask if what happened during the dodgeball championship had really happened) or the Goth Kids there.
Scott actually becoming friends with Craig because he looks up to him greatly.
Captain Diabetes and Mosquito shenanigans, yes.
Mintberry Crunch getting up to date on Coon & Friends’ status from Mysterion. Just MBC getting up to speed with Mysterion in general because he’s one of the kids he still remembers.
Bradley interacting with Henrietta’s friends and being an absolute envious twerp towards them. He doesn’t like his sister’s friends much, nope.
Okay but AU in which FBW is the same but MCB gets more involved?? I’m sure the other Coon & Friends would have words to exchange with him anyways- JUST LET THEM SET THEIR DIFFERENCES BEHIND!!
#📁 • OOC.#📁 • Wishlist.#(I like specific plots; I just never get them going.)#(But; please; contact me if you're interested in any of these!.)#(I may actually update this post with any other ideas in the future.)

Week One Project: My MCBS Story Expanded
Before I started the MCBS Program, I was working full-time as a server in an Italian Restaurant and studying to get my insurance license, while also working part-time as a personal assistant. As I grew tired of this routine, I began to ponder what path I wanted to venture down next. As a creative, I have many interests and paths to choose from. I had always thought that I wanted to sign up for Art Institute’s Fashion Program, but the amount of debt that would result from this decision was frightening. I knew that I wanted to continue my education, but wasn’t sure what program would be best, as most of my interests didn’t require a degree.
But then, I bought my own sewing machine and decided to design from home, while still putting most of my energy into my unfulfilling “regular jobs.” Because of this new venture, I began to grow my Social Media following on various platforms. In order to open an online store, it was imperative that I grow my following. Because of this, I also began to familiarize myself with the process and techniques involved in growing a following organically, and joining different online communities. By learning these skills and gaining experience, I discovered that I was able to help others grow their Social Media accounts as well.
I was pregnant with my first and already knew that I wanted to build an income from home rather than returning to the unsatisfying jobs and allowing my baby to spend most of his time with alternative caregivers and because of this, I began researching different work-from-home possibilities. I was already familiar with Social Media management, as I have a couple of friends who do this on a professional level. Upon researching different Social Media positions, I realized that I had most of the skills and qualifications. What I didn’t have was the portfolio to back up my skill set. Finally, after looking into multiple Social Media Management positions, Full Sail University’s MCBS Program was displayed at the very top of my Google search results.
Ever since I decided to pursue my passion for media, I have discovered more about myself and have begun to build my Social Media Management business from home while spending time with my son.
In Stacey William’s Lynda.com session, we learn that “storytelling is a basic human function and is important to us on a cognitive level. Stories are how we understand the world.” This helped me shape my story because at times, I get caught up in trying to perfect every detail. Stories aren’t perfect. Unlike essays, stories allow us to express ourselves more creatively and freely. Once we understand that seeking and telling stories is part of our nature, we gain a better understanding of how to connect with the audience on an emotional level.

Air Canada Extends Status of All Altitude FFP Members
Air Canada has confirmed plans to extend the current status of its Altitude frequent flyer programme members until the end of 2021. The airline will also allow members to share any status achieved in 2020 with a loved one, and is creating new opportunities to qualify for Altitude status and earn Aeroplan Miles from home. "Loyalty is a two-way street – certainly in good times, but especially so in hard times," said Mark Nasr, Vice President, Loyalty and eCommerce at Air Canada. "Altitude members have shown outstanding commitment to Air Canada, and to provide some certainty during these uncertain times, we are extending members' current Altitude status to the end of 2021. We're also making it easier to share status with a loved one, and earn both status and Aeroplan miles from home. The entire Air Canada team is looking forward to welcoming all customers back in the skies when the time is right."
Changes to the Air Canada Altitude programme include: - All Altitude status for 2020 will automatically be extended through to the end of 2021. Should a member reach a higher status before the end of this year, they will enjoy it upon qualification, and maintain it through 2021 as well. - Since Altitude status is secure through 2021, if a member has already achieved status for next year, or does so by the end of 2020, they can gift it to a friend or family member. - While at home, a member can still earn Aeroplan Miles, progress towards Altitude status and make a difference with their miles. From now until 30 April, for every five Aeroplan Miles a member donates to a charity engaged in fighting the COVID19 crisis, they will receive one Altitude Qualifying Mile – up to a maximum of 25,000 AQM – all of which count towards 2021 status for the member, and a loved one. These improvements are in addition to other recent Aeroplan changes: - Until 30 April, all members can cancel any Flight Reward free of charge and receive all of their Aeroplan Miles back in their account, plus a full refund of any associated taxes, fees and surcharges on the unused value of their travel. This is available for flight itineraries departing any date in the future. - Air Canada has paused expiry of Aeroplan Miles until 14 May 2020, meaning that between now and 14 May, any Aeroplan Miles which would have expired will not. Effective 15 May, Air Canada's normal expiration policy will once again apply, meaning that miles will expire if an eligible transaction has not been completed prior to this date. Douglas Webster: Artist. Choreographer. Director.
Posted by Team IDC | Sep 26, 2019
by Anne Calder | Photos by Daphne Backman
Douglas Webster created Ice Dance International in 2014 and is the Executive Artistic Director. IDI showcases and promotes ice dancing as an internationally recognized performing art untethered by the technical rules of competitive ice dance.
Douglas Webster has choreographed for many major skating companies including Disney on Ice, Holiday on Ice, Stars on Ice, and the Sun Valley Ice Show. His choreography has been in television shows all over the world including Disson Skating, Winter Solstice on Ice, Skating with the Stars for ABC TV, and Sterren Dansen of Het Ijs [Dancing on Ice] in the Netherlands.
He recently shared his thoughts about ice dance and skating in general with IDC.
Growing up in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, what was it like skating outdoors on ponds? My family would go skating together on lakes and ponds around North Conway, New Hampshire. Though not a pond per se, I did skate on an outdoor rink in front of the old train station. It was a makeshift type rink with a hose and scraper for an ice cleaner. My time at that early rink has become a key to building our Get Out and Skate programs with the New Hampshire and Maine public schools with the hope to inspire everyone to enjoy skating outdoors in the winter.
It’s a gift to skate outdoors breathing fresh air with the natural world flying by. It’s a feeling that still resonates with me today. There’s a little pond down the street from where I live now in Kittery, ME that I like to skate on in winter. It’s so nice to walk down the street and hop on the ice for a spin.
Tell us how your early skating experiences eventually led to becoming a professional? I began skating in the 70’s. When I became a more devoted skater at the “old” age of 12-13, every couple of weeks my dad would take me to the Skating Club of Boston for one lesson. [A five-hour round trip drive]. In the summer we went to Lake Placid, New York, and Augusta, Maine, where John Millier & Amy Webster introduced me to ice dancing.
When my family moved to Fairfax, Virginia I met Audrey Weisiger and a wonderful team who guided me through my tests at a rapid rate. I competed in Novice at the 1985 US Nationals and in Junior Men at Easterns the following year. After that, I quit skating and went to college. At the end of my sophomore year, I got a soloist job at a Willy Bietak ice show at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Virginia, which introduced me to the awesome world of professional skating.
Who were some of your fellow performers in your early days of show skating? My best friends in the ice shows remain my best friends today. Cindy Stuart and Jamie Isley were my closest friends in the early days, and we share a unique bond today. In 1988/89 we performed together in Willy Bietak’s Festival on Ice and the first rendition of Broadway on Ice in Miami with John Curry and then at Harrah’s in Lake Tahoe with Scott Hamilton. Judy Blumberg & Michael Seibert, Tai Babilonia & Randy Gardner also performed. [He also did Carmen on Ice in Spain before returning to college.]
Share some of your memories of John Curry. It was a gift to not only know John and work with him in the 80’s, but I saw his John Curry Skating Company in 1985 at the Kennedy Center when I was a senior in high school. I was lucky that my family took me to the theatre and ballet; John’s company added wonderful skating to the combination. Seeing John’s company has inspired every bit of my life and career…and Ice Dance International.
Tell us about working with the Ice Theatre of New York. (ITNY) Share some memories. I arrived in New York City in January 1991 just after graduating from William and Mary College. Valerie Levine, who had also done Carmen on Ice, encouraged me to skate with the Ice Theatre of New York. I stayed on with ITNY until October 2014 as a performer, choreographer, ensemble director, associate artistic director and finally as artistic director.
I have many fond memories of my time with Ice Theatre of New York.
Skating and performing with Judy Blumberg in Appalachia Waltz.
Choreographing Departures for ITNY as a tribute to those lost at the World Trade Center.
Choreographing Unforgettable, a repertory piece created for Richard Dwyer as an homage to the classic era of ice show.
What were your greatest challenges when you began choreographing? Back in the day with no Facebook, Instagram or even personal computers, things were just a little different. There were so few opportunities for choreographers in production skating – and there aren’t that many today, which is why social media is such a wonderful gift to not only young choreographers, but for anyone who wants to share their passion for movement on ice.
Getting paid is another thing – and outside having your work seen – is the next major obstacle for a new choreographer or videographer like Jordan Cowan / On Ice Perspectives. For years, getting paid was secondary to creating…and then understanding ownership of your work.
I basically did everything and anything I could for experience. I asked Brian Wright, one of skating’s great choreographers, who passed from AIDS in 2003, how to become a working choreographer. He said, “Just show up to everything.” And I did.
I think my whole life as a skating choreographer has been a struggle between the creation of the work, getting it seen, and then feeling confident to find value in the work.
What has been the most memorable choreography you created and for whom? It’s difficult to imagine one that is most memorable as there have been so many different types of choreographic opportunities between productions, competitive skating and the decades throughout.
Competitive skaters: Choreographing Lucinda Ruh’s Chopin piece for the World Pro and Keegan Messing’s “Always Look at the Bright Side of Life”; Elena Leonova & Andrei Khvalko’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”
Production: I’m so glad I got to choreograph and direct the Wizard of Oz at the Autostadt in Germany, work on High School Musical for Disney, and, of course, Shall We Dance on Ice with Disson Skating.
ITNY: Dare Greatly, Departures, and Roots
IDI: After the Rain and Into the Light!
I can fall into a video hole watching opening numbers I created from Sterrne Dansen op Het Ijs. Each one brings a memory and a smile.
If you were asked to choreograph a competitive ice-dance program for a current couple, whom would you choose and why? I would ask to choreograph the entire Montreal School in one ice ballet. The Montreal School should have a professional company for the skaters to mature into.
Every ice dance school should have its company school…like SAB [School of American Ballet]…and they should be creating work together. These pieces would be non-competitive, but company pieces of repertory building to the professional company. These companies could co-exist and help build all the current competitive programming and help provide alternatives to one competitive path that ice dancers thrive on. This would be an hour a day, along with a company edge class.
Is there any retired ice dance team that you didn’t choreograph, but wish you did? What kind of program would you give them? The Duchesnays! They were so unique and interesting. I would love to collaborate with them at their prime. Also, Rahkamo and Kokko. All are influencers in our art.
Again, I would love for these folks to take part in an ice dance company – one that takes these couples out of the traditional partnership and places them in an ensemble dance that utilizes their individual skills to full effect to create company works.
Your Shall We Dance on Ice in 2014 brought Anissina & Peizerat and Dubreuil & Lauzon out of retirement plus added other Olympic ice dancers and Dancing with the Stars cast members. Tell us how you chose that format and how it all blended together so successfully. I had already been thinking of creating a dance company with a trained company of ice dancers as its core. Meryl and Charlie had just won the Olympics and were on Dancing with the Stars at the time we thought about doing the show. Finding a vehicle for them was key to Steve Disson (the producer) and me.
I was working with Edward Villella, the founder of the Miami City Ballet [MCB]. He had just created The Three Smokers men’s trio. He and I were discussing a piece that was a segment from an MCB dance called Neighborhood Ballroom, and how it went through different eras of dance. I think all these swirling conversations got us to Shall We Dance on Ice. Then I created the idea of the ballroom segments and genres [danced by couples in small groups].
Regarding the dancers coming out of retirement…I think everyone saw the rise of ice dance at the time. To be part of a large-scale production that celebrated the joy of it all was exciting. It was an incredible cast…wow! [Marie-France Dubreuil & Patrice Lauzon, Marina Anissina & Gwendal Peizerat, Tanith Belbin & Ben Agosto, Naomi Lang & Peter Tchernyshev, Kim Navarro & Brent Bommente, Isabelle Tobias & Ilya Tkachenko, Sinead & John Kerr, Meryl Davis & Charlie White + Dancing with the Stars cast members + TV Hosts Ryan Bradley and Kristi Yamaguchi.]
What could our current competitors learn from skaters you worked with in the past? Sustained edges and a commitment to glide.
Is Ice dance a sport or should it be dropped from the Olympic? Ice dance is an extreme athletic endeavor, but fares poorly in criteria alongside any sport where getting a goal or going the distance is the base for a win. My personal feeling is ice dance is the best thing to watch in the Olympics, so I’d hate for it to be stripped from the world stage, but I also see it as glorious entertainment.
IDI strives to build a bridge from sport to art and develop the awareness of ice dancing as a performing art form.
Tell us about your two specials and cast that are currently showing on PBS. I created The World of Ice Dance International and Flight: The Art of Ice Dance International to showcase the company and document some of the history of dance on ice as an art form. The specials provide a platform to promote a unique way of creating dance on ice with the top ice dance talent in the world.
I’ve been developing the cast for eight years. Pasquale Camerlengo has been important in the belief of IDI and encouraging some of his skaters to take part if possible along with top choreographers with ice dance backgrounds like Benoit Richard whose work is featured in Flight, the second special.
We’ve been fortunate to have top ice dancers like Naomi Lang, Kim Navarro, Brent Bommente, Todd Gilles, Joel Dear, Beata Handra, Anastasia Olson, Ian Lorello, Jordan Cowan, Carly Donowick, Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker along with other terrific skaters like Ryan Bradley, Erin Reed, Adam Kaplan, Mauro Bruni, Lauren Farr, Natalia Zaitseva, Jonathan Hunt and Neill Shelton.
You have seen many changes in ice dancing over the years. What do you like the best and the least? Twizzles…the worst…not so much for competitive skating, but how they’ve found their way into performance skating – like watching the ice dancers in Stars on Ice…I think the fear of screwing up a side-by-side twizzle is more difficult than the feat itself. Then the theatrical full face and shazam moment when they’re done always makes me laugh. Side-by-side twizzles are completely uninteresting to me. The same as how competitive skaters do leveled footwork in their exhibition programs. Break free people!! Think outside of the box!
The best is the seamless interaction and use of the full body. I teach a class for US Dance Camp and our own IDI clinics called Skate 360. The class is about how to use (and discover) the full body while skating in a 360 sphere of energy…using all different levels and planes of motion. This is currently happening, and I see it in all parts of figure skating, singles, pairs, etc. To me, the dance of skating is the full use of the body while staying in the push. Gabriella [Papadakis] & Guillaume [Cizeron], the French World Champions, totally get it.
The other thing they get is the loss of the self in their skating. Their expression is inherent in the skating and the dance…not forced. Expression comes through the whole body…not just the face. This is a big step away from ballroom and pushes skating into a deep artful place…the loss of ego in the dance. Doing that in competitive skating gets big bonus points.
What lessons did you learn from the many famous people you have collaborated with over the years? I think I learned the most from my partnership with [choreographer] Cindy Stuart. She is so thorough in her preparations and understanding of how to build a large-scale production, which led to saving time and lots of money – to great effect.
The most important lesson I have learned is life doesn’t get any easier when you’re famous. Often, it’s just more complicated. Otherwise, I’ve learned to trust my instincts and follow my heart. The best creative energies come from your core and not by trying to imitate others.

I’ve been trying to go to bed for the past couple of hours but it’s so goddamn hot I’ve just been tossing and turning... (Kate, if you’re reading this: IN THE DARK OF THE NIGHT I WAS TOSSING AND TURNING). But hm I guess I decided to get up for a while and post some updates in my life, seeing how I haven’t blogged in a while.
In terms of my dating life, I’ve been having a lot of fun recently. He talks to me everyday, he looks forward to listening to me talk about my day, and he plans our dates during the weekends. I told him that I liked adventures and that I never get to travel, so he tries to surprise me and takes me to places that I’ve never been to. On our third date (after Emeryville), he took me to Pier 45 to this retro arcade (because I said I liked arcades) and he took me to Land’s End (because I said I liked the ocean) and Twin Peaks (because I said I like scenic views). Honestly, it was great because I could see the effort he put into planning this date and I thought it really showed how much he cared. On our fourth date, he took me to the vivarium (because I said I liked snakes) and we walked around Fourth Street looking at furniture LOL, then he took me to the Marina. It was funny because that was the date where we finally shared food/drinks because he’s an extreme germaphobe and the next day he got a full-blown fever and hives. I felt pretty bad because I felt perfectly fine lolol. I really like him.
School is fuckin hard as usual. MCB 102 is pretty goddamn difficult, but I’m glad I have Shivani and Nao in my class to study with because we can explain concepts to each other. I really don’t understand why we have to memorize all of these cycles when we’re just going to forget them in a couple of days anyways, but I guess it’s useful in the long run... I’m hoping. The final is next week and I’m honestly burnt out af. But I’ll try. Developmental psych is super interesting! I actually love the professor since she’s so chill and she is welcome to discussions and questions from her students. She gives out interesting parenting techniques as well.
Friend-wise, I’ve been spending time with Kate, Spencer (since we live a block away from each other), Jane, and my freshman year floor mates often. I feel bad because I’m too busy to see my friends as often as I would like to, but I still try to set aside time. I’m kind of sad about the friends who aren’t in Berkeley right now, because I’d love to spend time with them as well. But I know they’re having fun wherever they are. :’) (P.S. Don’t come back to Berkeley it’s hell)
Lab... lab is fun and interesting. Ever since I’ve been assistant lab manager, I’ve honestly been bonding with Anisha and Steph, and I have a lot of fun just sharing cool stories with each other or just troubleshooting problems in the lab together. It’s kind of scary sometimes because the PI is crazy intimidating and I feel like he could just snap and yell at us for screwing something up at any minute... he even gave Anisha and I a lecture. It was confusing because I felt like he was trying to praise/thank us but it ended up becoming a lecture. I think he meant well. I finally e-mailed him and the grad student to get started on my honors thesis AND HE APPROVED, so I’m pretty excited to get the ball rolling on that! I haven’t thought of a concrete topic yet, but I hope my meeting with the grad student next week can give me some more insight of what I can research for this next year. I’m a bit worried worried but uber stoked.
Aand finally the club that Antony and I are founding: we realized that we didn’t have our shit together yet so we’ve decided to move our launch date to Spring 2018 instead. So that took a lot off my chest.
Otherwise... I feel like I’m perpetually tired and exhausted, but I feel pretty satisfied with my life as of now. I look forward to weekends now more so than ever and I (somewhat) enjoy what I’m learning (although I die studying).
I def miss my cats more than anything.

I’m exhausted still but I don’t think I can fall asleep :(

10 life skills that teenagers can learn during the lockdown - Times of India

10 life skills that teenagers can learn during the lockdown - Times of India
The country is effectively at a standstill since the lockdown was announced. Now when the lockdown has been extended for 19 more days, we have more time on our hands. As opposed to the times, when teenagers were busy with, school and friends and their hobbies, they now have a lot of free time on their hands. Every parent is struggling with the idea of their child not being able to spend their time constructively during the lockdown. Enrolling them into an online class or making sure they workout , when they get time, are a few ways to make sure they do, however, parents can also take this time together to make sure their teens learn a few skills that they would invariably need when they grow up.
How to read for fun The one thing schooling might be missing is inculcating self-driven reading in children. Teenagers often only pick up a book if it a part of a course or they require to read it for an assignment. However, reading is a huge part of adolescent development. They need to learn to guide their own reading, choose books that they would like to read and then discuss ideas that they form while they read. It is advisable for parents to make sure that they encourage their teenager to set aside time to read every day.
How to manage time Children have a strict schedule at school. However, they do not have a set timetable to follow when they are at home. In school, where every second if their day is accounted for, it is not the same when children graduate to college and work. Therefore, this is the perfect time for teens to learn how to prioritize and manage their time. Parents should let their kids make their own schedule for when they are at home. A review can help them understand what they can change to make the day more productive.
How to plan meals Planning their house is the most important thing that a child will have to do when they grow up. It is easy to know how to cook, however, there are a lot of other steps involved in running a household. They must know how much do essentials cost and whether they can afford them or not. It is a good idea to let your child manage the meals for the family for a week. let them budget themselves and encourage them to take decisions on the number of groceries required.
How to handle disappointment Disappointments are at a high during times like these. With plans being cancelled and the uncertainty of life ahead, teens might tend to take a lot of things to heart. However, this is when parents can intervene and help them handle disappointment in a more positive manner. Get them to make a list of things they’d rather be doing. Teach them that almost every time alternatives to their disappointments are available at an arm’s length, only if they look for them with an open mind.
How to take care of a car Very soon teenagers will grow up to be independent and the one thing they will have to be comfortable with is driving and caring for the car. Teens should know what to do is they get a flat tire and the ways in which you care for a vehicle. They should also know how to spot potential problems that can occur when they begin driving. With you at home, they have the perfect teacher to help them discover. How to manage money Managing money is undoubtedly one of the most important skills your teen will need when they start learning. They should know how to budget themselves and also know the average costs of essential expenditures like electricity, rent and maintenance. They should also be aware of their academic performance can get them a college and job that will be able to support their dream job.
How to organize The biggest complaint every parent has with their teenager is their messy room. Now is a great time to get them to clear out their room. Maybe separate out clothes that can be donated and separate out stuff they do not really need anymore. It is also a good time for them to clear out their study area properly as the lockdown has forced them to study from homes through virtual classrooms. A clutter-free space increases focus and concentration.
How to manage chores Very soon, when your teenagers go to college or have a home of their own, they will have to manage cleaning and upkeep of their homes on their own. They should help you with chores like laundry, cooking and cleaning. It is a good idea to set up a schedule and delegate a different responsibility every day. Teach them to be accountable if that chore is not completed.
How to file taxes Taxes are probably the most daunting task of adulthood. it becomes more difficult if children are not introduced to it at a relatively early age. Make them sit with you and help them understand the way taxes are filed, and how much amount of your monthly salary goes as tax. How to handle small emergencies Your child should be able to handle small emergencies within the household, like know where the water main is and how to turn it off, or how to find the MCB box and react during electrical emergencies. They will need to handle these crises on their own when they get their own place. Spend a day with them pointing at these essentials and giving them a demo on how to use them.

Game 360: Quest for Power (1981)
Problem #1: Nothing Arthur or Galahad did was done “for power.”
Quest for Power
United States
Crystalware (developer and original publisher); Epyx (later publisher)
Released in 1981 for Atari 800 and Apple II. Rereleased in 1982 as King Arthur’s Heir
Date Started: 5 March 2019
Date Finished: 5 March 2019
Total Hours: 1
Difficulty: Very Easy (1/5)
Final Rating: (to come later)
Ranking at time of posting: (to come later)
Quest for Power is another insulting game from Crystalware, a company that was either knowingly scamming its customers or so clueless about what made a good game that they must have never played one. I admit that their titles at least sound interesting–I was sucked in by the backstory of House of Usher (1980), for instance–but if anything they’ve gotten progressively worse as time passed, losing core elements that made them, if not “good,” at least memorable. A commenter named Tronix recently posted some background on the company, and while we can’t take an anonymous Internet comment as gospel, what he says makes sense given the quality of the games. I’m particularly disturbed about the party where they “skipped town” while still owing money to a lot of developers. I hope the developer of this game, Marc Benioff, managed to recover.
There isn’t much to say about Quest for Power. Like the other Benioff/Crystalware collaboration, The Forgotten Island (1981), it’s a short adventure with a few light RPG elements, recalling in structure the old Adventure for the Atari 2600 (1979). It takes about as long to play and win the game as to read the manual, and the lengths that Epyx went through to puff up the manual for the re-release (as King Arthur’s Heir) are particularly absurd given the paucity of actual gameplay.
You have to have several artifacts before you enter Canterbury.
The backstory casts you as Sir Galahad, son of Arthur’s “good friend” Lancelot, who Arthur designates as his heir to the English throne if he can find and return the Scroll of Truth, which Merlin has hidden somewhere on the island. Good lord, that sentence alone manages to mangle the Arthurian legends in about a dozen different ways. The whole point of Galahad’s story–in the few sources where he actually appears–is that he’s too pure for the mortal world, and he is taken bodily into heaven at the end of the Grail Quest. Arthur and Lancelot are hardly “friends” by the end of Arthur’s reign; Merlin should be long gone; and the realm wouldn’t be known as “England” for over 400 years.
There are several places to buy necessities. This particular list makes it look like I’m about to murder someone and then dump the body off-shore.
Your little icon sets out from Camelot to explore the land, which I guess is roughly shaped like Britain except that for some reason it’s surrounded by a wall. Your journey will take you to the Caves of Somerset, Hastings Mountain, Sunderland, Essex, the Castle of Skenfrith, the Black Forest, the Eagle Stone, Canterbury, Hillsborough by the Sea, and Leeds. (Of these, only Canterbury has any authentic Arthurian history. “Hastings Mountain” doesn’t even exist.) The manual makes it sound like these are all exotic and interesting places to explore, but really they’re just names written across the screen with maybe one NPC and a treasure item.
This would have made World War II a lot easier.
To win the game, you have to defeat a series of enemies (The Devil of Skenfrith Castle, the Black Wizard, Gogmagog–none of them appear in actual Arthuriana) and acquire a series of treasures. For instance, you explore the Caves of Somerset to find the key to Essex, where you find Moses’s Rod (where’s Kenny when you need him?), and so forth. The enemies named in those parentheses, plus a couple of dragons, are the only fights in the game.
Canonically, Galahad could probably do this.
Combat is a matter of random rolls. Each round, each fighter does 1-9 points of base damage against the enemy but each round, one of the two combatants gets 10 added to his roll. For instance, you might take 7 damage while doing 19 in the first round, but in the second the Black Wizard gets the bonus and does 15 damage to you versus your 3 damage to him.
Looks like I got lucky this round.
As you start off with only 3 hit points, the first combat–whoever you fight it with–is a risk. But if you can win, you’ll gain enough power and extra hit points that further combats become much easier. After your second or third combat, you’re basically invincible.
In battle against Gogmagog.
Gold chests pop up randomly as you explore, and there are a few places where you can spend your gold on an axe, a rope, and a boat. There are three NPCs (Ambrosius, Amadas, and some random guy in Essex Castle) who give you spectacularly unnecessary hints, and one of them must be bribed over 1,000 gold for his.
I’m sure I would have found it on my own anyway.
Once you’ve found enough artifacts and have built up enough power from killing enemies, the guard Oberion (facepalm) will let you into Canterbury. There, you find the Ark of the Covenant. If you open it without the three major artifacts (Anselm’s Staff, Solomon’s Ring, and Moses’s Rod), you’ll be melted in the manner of the Nazis in Raiders of the Lost Ark. With the three artifacts, you find the Scroll of Truth.
Completing my quest.
Granted, I had the emulator speed cranked up to 250%, but it still only took me about 20 minutes to run around the map and do what I needed to do. The game minimizes its control scheme; the manual actually brags about this. All action is mapped to the joystick except for the (T)rade command. If you have certain items (torch, boat, rope), you’re assumed to use them when the situation calls for it.
Returning the Scroll of Truth to Camelot wins the game. You get a picture of the throne room at Camelot and your score is displayed.
You can tell it’s Camelot by the “C” on the banners.
But of course it doesn’t end there. As with half of Crystalware’s titles, there’s supposedly a Great Mystery lurking beneath the surface, with players encouraged to solve it and send their solutions to the company, with promises of a $250 cash prize. (The Epyx re-release removes any mention of such a puzzle.) As usual, I not only didn’t solve it, I don’t even know what they’re talking about. Is it something you’re supposed to find in the game? A hidden message? Is it simply winning the game?
Can anyone identify the source of the image Crystalware used? Reverse image searches were no help.
The manual says that to solve the mystery, you must a) read the entire manual, b) “go to each of the magical places and talk to all of the magical people.” “It is then,” the manual says, “you may understand the very neurotic mystery.” Did the author not know what “neurotic” means, or is that a clue?
I wonder if they paid anyone.
The only three people to talk with in the game are Ambrosius, Amadas, and the guy at Essex. Amadas, at Hastings Mountain, says that “you must have Solomon’s Ring and Anselm’s Staff and Gogmagog to make it past Oberion!” (Once you defeat Gogmagog, his power “fuses” with you or something.) Ambrosius is hanging out by something called the Eagle Stone, and he says, “Ah, son of Arthur [???], the staff is in the caves.” Essex says, “The Ring of Solomon is in the Skenfrith Castle.” I’ve looked for anagrams, initialisms, and other wordplay and can’t find anything. Thus, I’ll give a reward of $50 to whoever can solve the mystery, which is five times the value of the GIMLET I gave to Quest for Power. It’s the first game so far with 1s straight across the board.
*****
Let’s talk about how we got so far down the list:
1. I’m having trouble with Planet’s Edge (1991). The introductory application starts up okay, but every time I hit ESC to move on, DOSBox crashes with a “corrupt MCB chain” error. I’ve tried multiple versions. I’ve tried running INSTALL and configuring video and sound different ways. I’ve tried running it with LOADFIX. I have not tried another computer with a different configuration of DOSBox, which I will next week after I move.
2. Minotaur: Labyrinths of Crete (1992) turns out to be a two-player game. (You’re supposed to connect over AppleTalk.) There’s a “single-player mode,” but it just lets you explore the dungeon, pick up items, and test them, not play in any meaningful way. It moves to the rejection list.
Wandering the Minotaur dungeon.
3. I thought I had a working copy of OrbQuest from reader Lance M., but I lost it or never downloaded it or something. I had to ask him for it again. He came through, but I had already half-drafted this entry by then. It’ll be soon.
4. I’m moving this week, so I didn’t have time to approach a game as complicated as Ultima VII.
Anyway, this means I need two more games to add to the “upcoming” list, replacing both Quest for Power and Minotaur. The earliest game on my list that I haven’t played is Sands of Mars (1981), another Crystalware title. We have three more, in fact, and I think I’m going to try to cover them all in one entry, but we’ll leave it as Sands of Mars for now. After that comes a random roll! It lands on Moraff’s Dungeons of the Unforgiven (1993). For those worried that I’m going to get too far away from 1992 before playing Might and Magic IV/V, don’t worry–we’re going to have a discussion next week about designating “landmark” games that I should prioritize in a given year.

I’m still figuring out this being famous gig.
Not that I’m famous in the everyone-knows-my-name way, but famous enough to have my bad-hair picture splashed across the centerfold of the New York Post, my book mentioned in People Magazine, a live interview with the “most listened to pet talk radio show in the country” and lots of dear family and friends turning out for my book launch.
It’s exciting and overwhelming and humbling.
I don’t know how to say thank you enough, and truth be told, I feel a bit guilty. I know of SO MANY amazing people at OPH and its partner shelters who are doing so much more than me and my little foster home. But I’m grateful that I can do what I do, knowing that it’s only because of so many other people, not the least of which is my husband Nick and my three kids who have suffered through the poop and the plunder. Just this morning Grits destroyed one of Brady’s socks and Billie Jean got the other.
Before I give you the reality of my past week, I have to say one thing – I AM NOT COMPLAINING.
I’m not.
Seriously, I’m beyond thrilled.
But while it might have looked great online, there were plenty of moments when I was well aware that I’m really not that important! The dogs helped out a bit in hammering home that point.
Let’s start with the launch party at Gunpowder Falls Brewing Company. There was fabulous food provided by my amazing bookclub (you ladies ROCK – Thank you, thank you, thank you. I owe you all big time.)
OPH was out in force with lots of foster dogs and volunteers and plenty of support. We even had one of the dogs get adopted that night – which I take as a GREAT omen for this book.
Maybe one of the coolest surprises was that Sadie (aka Harriet Beecher Stowe), the cover girl showed up!
As well as a few other stars of the book: (Okieriette, Fannie, Snapdragon, and Edith)
Everything went great, although Billie Jean was very stressed whenever she didn’t have me or Nick in her sights.
About midway through, a passing rainstorm hit and we had to huddle together under the tents, while avoiding the steady drips as the tops of the tents filled up with water. It didn’t last long and most everyone stayed dry and we resumed out party, but in the chaos of the storm I completely forgot that I’d planned to bring out the gorgeous cake at the midway mark and when we were cleaning up later I discovered it behind the bar still in its box. Still, it was a super-duper night.
The next day I said goodbye to Biscuit and Muffin who took off for their forever homes.
These little hounds have been a joy – surprising me with their very un-houndlike neatness. Despite a serious battle to rid them of worms that involved cooking a lot of rice and chicken, I’ve loved having them here. They are seriously lovable pups. Grits is still here, but no doubt his family will come for him this week. Frankie and Billie Jean are keeping him from missing his sissies too much.
If you’d like to meet him in person, join us at the Black Flag Brewing book event, where he will decidedly steal the show!
Friday night found me at Aaron’s Books in Lititz, one of my favorite little towns. I’ve been a patron at Aaron’s for years and always valued the excellent selection, the staff notes, and the excellent recommendations. Edith and Nancy made the trip with me. By the end of the night, Edith was a pro at signing books.
Tink (aka Summer Shandy) also made a brief appearance with Deb and Scott but the stress of the busy bookstore proved too much and she made an early exit.
Several generous patrons gave donations for the shelter tour which I was able to combine with a few other donations from the book launch to purchase a large aluminum Karunda bed for one of our shelters. Instead of dragging it along with us in the van, I had it shipped directly to the shelter. Best of all, I talked with at least two families who were seriously interested in fostering!
Saturday’s adventures took me to Monument City Brewing in Baltimore where the brewer is a two-time adopter from OPH. Angelica Church (now Milly) and Violet Beauregard (now Hildie) are growing up as brewery brats at MCB. Both girls, along with two more Hamilton pups, and my very FIRST FOSTER, Galina, joined me for the book event.
Snoopy’s family came to MCB to adopt him, which was super cool. Before they arrived, though, we pimped him out collecting donations for OPH.
Huge thanks to Lisa, Pam, and Mary Beth for helping me start to finish and to Steve for taking lots of pictures. The event was so much fun it ran a few minutes over, so I was pressed for time as I headed into beltway traffic. I was scheduled to do a live radio interview with Talkin’ Pets at 5:10pm.
At 5:03, I’d just crossed the state line to PA and I had a serious dilemma.
I had to pee.
There was not enough time to make it home before the interview, so I swung into the PA Welcome Center and prayed my phone wouldn’t ring while I was in the crowded bathroom. I’d just returned to my car when the host’s assistant called, so I sat in the rest area watching parents wrestle with children, truckers smoke cigarettes, and dogs do their business as I was interviewed on live on national radio.
The next day the New York Post article came out and I could only shake my head when I saw the picture that actually made the paper. It was one of the last one’s the photographer snapped when I’d sweated off my makeup and my hair was plastered to my head. So much for looking good for my national debut! My arms are full of puppies though, so likely that’s all anyone saw.
This week promises to be more of the same. Lucky for me I still have Grits and Billie Jean here to keep me humble. In fact, Grits managed to sneak off with my copy of People magazine yesterday. By the time I realized where all the little pieces of paper scattered through the front hall were coming from, he’d eaten the page that had the People’s Picks on it.
On Sunday, we had my parents and all the kids for a celebratory dinner and I’d saved the part of the cake that featured the book cover for our dessert. But while we were having a nice meal on the porch, Billie Jean managed to get the cake off the counter and eat the entire thing! (note to her future adopters – she has a stomach of steel and had absolutely no ill effects!)
Here’s the complete schedule –
I’d love to see some of you at any of the upcoming events. I’ve got frisbees (400 of them because the manufacturer accidentally doubled my order and when I reported the mistake, they told me to keep them!), treat bags for pups, and at many of the events, a few stars from the book ready to sign/paw with me!
At non-bookstore events, I’ll also be selling these super cool mugs with all the proceeds going to OPH!
Thanks for reading!

Week 1 Project: My Full Sail Story
Before I started the MCBS program, I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted to do with my life. Growing up, I was always fascinated by films, music, actors, and artists. I had always thought I wanted to create art or make movies. And yet, every time I would try and pursue one dream, I would find my mind wandering off to another. But then I realized that I had too many passions and interests to just pick one. Because of that I started my search. But where to begin? Because of that I looked online, followed through with friends, and even tried a few new jobs, hoping they would change my mind. While each opportunity taught me something, nothing was truly sticking. I felt like I was still waiting for something to click. Because of that I kept my eyes open. I searched online, I asked friends for advice, hoping that maybe someone had the answer I was looking for. Until finally, I stumbled upon the Media Communications Program through Full Sail University through an advertisement on Pandora Radio. Everything clicked! I could create, inspire, design, write, and pursue my many passions through one online degree program. And ever since I decided to pursue my passion for media, I have become more inspired and excited about my future.
