It was a Saturday afternoon and Weiss and Neptune held hands to meet his parents for the first time. It was then that the two looked at each other and blushed, smiling. "What's wrong, Snow Angel?" Asked Neptune.
Weiss ran her hand into her cheek in nervousness. Thinking of the reaction of his parents once introduced. "I don't know, Neptune. Ever since we got engaged. I am not sure how your parents would react, cause you know..." Weiss said.
Neptune figured that because she is a Schnee. She thought she would get rejected. But he knew otherwise that her personality counts and not her name. "Hey, don't worry about it. I am sure my parents would have to get to know you first. Least my brother won't be here to ruin the mood. On the bright side when I met your mom, she is actually nice, and too exciting when we told her the news."
-One month ago-
Willow gripped on Neptune's hand a bit tightly as she just got excited for their engagement. And saw some kindness in him. Unlike Weiss' father, Jacques. Weiss never saw this side of her mother before. Normally she would be more composed.
"Give me grandchildren!" She told him. Making Neptune eye-widened. Weiss is also jolted at this reaction.
"Mother!" Weiss and Whitley sighed.
-Present-
"Sorry about that. I never saw this side of my mother before. But she seemed better than before since my father is now gone." Weiss said. Even a bit shocked at her mother's reaction. She was glad that she accepted her fiancé. If her father were here, he would've went after him like a tyrant, which he already was.
"Hey, don't worry. I'm glad things gotten better since the wars." Neptune said. Recalling the events of meeting Willow. "Also, I might have to want you about my sisters." Neptune stammered. Weiss looked at him with surprise as m she did not know he has sisters.
"I don't know you have sisters." Weiss blinked. "What about them?"
"They are triplets, Vesta and Juno went to Haven together, while Ceres is a doctor, she's sweet and all, so there's nothing to worry about cause I think you might get along with her just fine. Needless to say, Juno and Vesta can be a bit of a powerhouse. It's safe to say they are overprotective of me. The last guy who picked on me got sent to the hospital after Juno and Vesta beat him up badly." Neptune rubbed the back of his head.
"Oh, I guess they couldn't help but love their little brother. Take it from my sister, she always believed I have to be on my own feet. But it doesn't stop her from helping me find my own ground." Weiss said.
Then minute they knocked the door. Weiss breathed a bit to keep calm when meeting others. Then when the door opened and Neptune's father Saturn is the first on the front door. "Son?" He greeted.
"Hey, dad. Sorry it's been too long...and..." Before he could say anything, Saturn greeted his son with a hug. "I am so happy you finally come for a visit!" He teared up. And then turned to Weiss. "Oh, who is this lovely young lady?" Weiss then introduced herself.
"Please to meet you, Mr. Vasilias. My name is Weiss Schnee, and your son is very wonderful." She smiled whole blushing at the same time seeing how sweet the reunion was between father and son. "It's a pleasure, Miss Schnee." He greets.
"Saturn, what's this all about?! I thought I heard panic, but..." His wife, Lydia covered her mouth in shock to see her son in person. She then launched herself into a hug. "My baby! Look how big you've grown!" She noticed his height almost as tall as her husband. "Great to see you too, mom."
Weiss is a bit astonished to see her fiancé's mother looking a bit younger than her husband. She must've been in good health. Lydia turned to Weiss and greeted her with a smile. "Oh my goodness. Neptune told me about you and you looked very beautiful!" Lydia squealed. As Weiss paled a bit that she never expect this kind of greeting before but did not say a word.
"Uh...thank you..." Weiss stammered. "You look also lovely as well." She told her back to ease up a bit. That's when Lydia gave her a hug, unexpectedly. The same reaction far joyful. Like Willow. "Come here!" She said. Weiss blushed, a little taken aback by the surprise. But tried to be polite. Then Lydia wrapped her arm around Weiss as she showed her the entrance. "Come on in, teriyaki and sushi can't eat themselves. Help yourselves!" She said cheerfully.
Then they all entered the house for a meeting. Later in the living room. "So I heard your sister is leading the military now, you must be very proud of her." Lydia said. Weiss nodded in agreement. "I am, she taught me in some way of gaining my own ground. Since my father is long gone, our family is free to chose our own paths."
Lydia sighed in relief for the mentioning of Jacques now deceased. "Well, I for one relieved. Ever since he framed Saturn for weaponry trafficking. I had to defend him in court. Not once he was ever locked up until now." Lydia recalled the case. This made Weiss paled a bit. But maintain her composure. "I for one, agreed. Not once did my father paid the price. I am also happy he is out of our lives."
"I am sure you don't deserve your father's treatment towards you. Your mother and I had been close at a young age. And for some reason, Jacques had been depriving her right to contact me. I couldn't help but feel bad for her. And as a result of the past, Jupiter grew to resent your sister."
"That I did not know. But once the wedding starts. You and my mother can make up for lost time." Weiss insisted. This got Saturn and Lydia surprised to hear that word. "You don't mean...?" They paused as Neptune and Weiss nodded as she showed them a silver ring that he used to propose to her. "Yep, he proposed to me." This brought joy.
Later, after the meeting. They decided to have some time to themselves. "Your parents are actually nice. Never have I thought they would be this joyful." Weiss admits. "From what I heard, your dad and your mom. They did work together on multiple cases. They seemed so happy together." Weiss said. A bit jealous that she never had parents like that.
"How so, Snow Angel?"
"The thing is, my parents were never like that. Form what I can remember, my father always kept his distance from my mother. All he did was give her a cold shoulder. For me, it was way harsher. The more I saw this, the more I thought some parents are like this, but it just wasn't right." Weiss told him.
"I get where you're coming from. Mom saw cases like that before. That's why I decided to work with law enforcement. To help others in need. When I was a kid. I used to call myself a coward. All those negative thoughts kinda blocked me from reality. I hate hurting others because of my semblance."
"Maybe that makes two of us. I'm glad you decided this yourself. I for one learned one thing. Seeing the world today, it was crazy, but it was also fun. If I were to still be an heiress, I wouldn't have met you today." Neptune took her by surprise by wrapping her arms around her in an embrace.
"You are the best one that's ever happened to me. I promised you, I'll do whatever so can for you. I don't care if you're a Schnee anyway. Your happiness is my happiness."
"Neptune, there's no need to be worked up about this! I appreciate it, really! But..."
"But I really mean it." Neptune finished. As they looked into each other's eyes.
Later, Saturn and Lydia present them the kimonos they were never familiar with. "Ta-da!" Lydia cheered. "Mom, what are these?" Neptune asked, a bit confused.
"These are what your father and I wore for our wedding! Black for the groom and white for the bride! Those are actually Mistral's traditional wear. Dont they look so beautiful?!" Asked Lydia.
Weiss and Neptune looked at each other. "Actually, they are. What do you think?" Neptune is at a loss for words. "I am not sure..."
"Come on, son. It won't hurt if you tried it on first." Saturn said. Suddenly they heard a crash from the kitchen and they ran to check it out. It was two of the triplets, Vesta and Juno. Standing above a Nevermore they killed and made a hole in the walls. "Haha! Another day, another Grimm down! Take that!" Vesta then paid attention to her parents. "Sorry, Daddy! Juno is not the type to find landing spaces." Vesta apologized while Juno is too busy celebrating another hunt completed.
"Guys, seriously?!" Neptune groaned. Then his sisters jumped off to hug him. "Our baby brother is back!" Making Neptune feeling embarrassed. "Nice to see you too! Please let me go!" Neptune pleaded while his sisters gripped on him, being overly affectionate. "Aw, come on, don't be baby! Just a few more minutes!" Juno cheered. Then eyed on Weiss. "Who is she?"
"Um...hi." Waved Weiss. Suddenly, Ceres came home from work in the hospital. "Daddy! I'm home! I heard Neptune's back and...!" Ceres paused to see her sisters and the Nevermore. The turned to Weiss. "You must me Weiss. It's nice to meet you. Sorry about my sisters. Also, I have to warn you. Don't get me wrong. I love my brother, but he is a flirt." She whispered the last thing near her ear.
"Don't worry about it, it's nice to meet you too." Ceres seems genuine, but more likely to save other girls from heartbreak. Since she seems to be gentle but strict out of the triplets. Not sure is her brother changed or not. "Ceres! I'm not that guy anymore!" Snapped Neptune.
"Don't worry, I knew you grown. I am sure your sisters are amazing too." Weiss assured. Then Lydia grasped her hand. The same reaction Willow had shown before. "Please say you'll give me grandchildren!" Pleaded Lydia. Making the rest of the Vasilias household, except Vesta and Juno, paled. "Mom!" Shouted Neptune.
"Lydia! It's too soon to ask something too personal!" Saturn joined Neptune. "Mom!" Added Ceres. As much as Saturn wanted grandchildren, he knows patience is a virtue. And Lydia did not seemed to get any older, physically. As for Vesta and Juno, they are getting too excited to have a niece or a nephew. But for Weiss and Neptune, it was getting too much. But decides to wait until things have calmed down a bit.
"Eeek! Did you hear that?!" Juno squealed.
"Yeah, just give us a niece or a nephew! I don't care!" The sisters held hands and jumped up and down. Much to the dismay of their third triplet sister, Ceres. "Vesta, Juno, not you too. Did you not see the damage you caused there." Ceres gestured at the broken walls. "Lighten up, sweet sister! Think of all the fun we can have with their kids!"
"Want my advice? Get yourselves some boyfriends." Ceres advised strictly. But they are not listening.
"So, when's the wedding?" Saturn asked. Awkwardly rubbing the back of his head. "We've been thinking a month later." Weiss replied. The couple looked at each other and smiled, knowing that it might not be a perfect wedding, but it will be a great time to spend with their families.

Shortcakes’ Wedding “Diary”
Pairing: Syo Kurusu x Jules (Kurusu) (Me)
Other Characters: Many... (Everyone from Shining Agency + Kurusu Family)
Word Count: 2500+
TW: It’s a positive rollercoaster! (Fluff)
Tag List/Special Wedding Guests: @of-comfort-and-love @minty-fresh-kicks @stars-sunglasses-and-sodapop
Info: So, today is finally our wedding day and I kinda went over board with this story, hehe... [blushes] It’s written like little vlogs (though I call them “diary entries”) from getting ready to the reception speech!
[ok to rb/p.ros.hippers dni]
April 8, 2021 at 8:00 AM
[The recording starts]
„Okay, we‘re filming!“, says Nanami with a big smile on her face. „Welcome to the first video ’diary’ entry of Syo‘s and Jules‘ wedding day! The happy bride is over here-“
[The camera swings over to Jules and Tomo]
„-getting ready for her big day! Say hello, girls!“ Jules smiles shyly at the camera and waves. „Hello…“, she says. „Hello, hello~!“, answers Tomochika and winks at the camera. She is currently doing the young brunette‘s hair. „Are you excited, Ju-chan?“, asks Nanami. Jules nods slightly to not disturb Tomo during her work on her. „I am! Nervous but very excited, hehe…“ Oh and how nervous she is. Jules is scared of messing up and it being on camera forever but at the same time she can’t wait to be married to the man of her dreams. „Just think of Syo and it‘ll be fine!“, throws Tomo in. The blue-eyed bride blushes hard, while the two redheads laugh warmly.
[The camera zooms in a little more on Jules]
Then the young composer speaks up again. „So, Jules. What’s on the schedule?“ The girl in question giggles. „Well, right now: getting ready. The wedding ceremony is at 10AM, after that the reception at 12PM and lastly the wedding party.“ Nanami nods behind the camera. „Syo‘s dad should be here soon with the dress.“, adds Jules. This time it’s Tomochika who speaks. „Your dress is so beautiful. I‘ve only seen pictures so far but it’s gorgeous.“ Jules smiles. „Yeah, it really is. Makes me wonder if I really deserve to wear such an amazing dress.“ „Oh, hush! It was custom made, by your father-in-law, for you. Of course you deserve to wear it. You’ll look like a real princess in it! Syo won’t manage to take his eyes off of you.“, exclaims Tomo with confidence. The brunette blushes again. „Thanks, girls…“ There is a light knock.
[The camera view gets lowered to the floor]
„Oh, room service! It‘d be good if you could eat something to ease your nerves.“
[The camera focuses on the two girls again]
Jules chuckles lightheartedly. „Yeah, I‘ll try. Even though I’m not hungry.” She takes a look at her phone on the table. “Hm, I wonder how Syo is doing. We spent the night apart. I hope he’s alright…” Another knock. This time it’s Syo‘s dad with the special dress in tow. „Good morning, ladies.“ „Good morning, sir!“ The middle-aged man turns to Jules. “How are you doing today, Jules?” The brunette smiles. “I’m doing well, thank you! Nervous but well.” “Heh, yeah, that’s completely normal, dear!”, answers her soon-father-in-law with a chuckle.
[The camera zooms out]
„Okay, I think we should let the bride get ready in peace now.“ It‘s Nanami‘s voice. Tomo nods at that. „Yeah, we can take pics of the finished look after. Right, Jules?“ „Yes, totally.“, Jules answers with a smile. „Alright, this is it for the first video entry! Bye!“ The three people in view smile and wave at the camera.
[The recording ends]
April 8, 2021 at 8:30 AM
[The recording starts]
„HELLO!!! My best friend is getting married today!”, screams Natsuki behind the camera. The other STARISH guys flinch at the shrill tone. „Was it a good idea to let Natsuki film for now?“, asks Otoya jokingly. „Ah, it’ll be fine!“, answers Cecil. Tokiya turns to the device. „Welcome to this first video from us, the guys‘ side.“ Everybody, except Natsuki, waves at the camera with big smiles on their faces. „Hello!“ Ren goes over to Syo, who leans against a window, and pats his shoulder. „This little man is the lucky groom today! He is excited to see his bride~!“ Syo blushes but tries to hide it with a frown. „H-hey! Don’t call me short!“
[The camera view gets very shaky]
„Aww, Syo-chan! I‘m so happy for you!!“ „Natsuki! Be careful with the camera-“
[The view is blurry before doing dark]
„Ugh. Natsuki. Can‘t...breathe...“ It‘s definitely Syo‘s voice. „Oh! Sorry!!“ There is laughter now. „Oh, the camera…“ „Don’t worry, Ittoki. I got it.“
[The camera gets picked up]
„Hello, this is Hijirikawa Masato.“, says the voice behind the device. „Welcome again to this little video entry of this special day. We‘re currently in the suite and getting ready.“
[The camera zooms to Syo]
„Kurusu, how are you feeling?“, asks Masato. The blonde smiles fondly. „Amazing! I just can’t wait to see Jules. I’m sure she looks gorgeous. I wish it‘s 10AM already, haha!“ Syo turns around and plays a little with his white suit sleeve, while looking out of the window. Cecil speaks up next. „Could it be that you‘re nervous?“ Syo takes a deep breath. „No! I mean, yeah, maybe a little. I‘m so confident and yet, today, I‘m even more nervous than during important auditions. Well, more like happy, excited, nervous, just so many emotions at once.” Syo turns to his friends again. “Is that normal?” Tokiya smiles at him. “Of course. You’re getting married today, it’s normal to feel like this.” The others nod at Tokiya’s answer.
[The camera zooms out to show the group]
“That’s why you should eat something, Syo-chan!”, exclaims Natsuki and points at the food that they ordered from room service. The young groom sits down at the table. “I’m not really hungry actually…” Otoya lays one of the sandwiches on a plate and puts it in front of Syo. “Believe us, you’re going to need every little bit of strength today.” The blonde idol smiles, nods, and starts nibbling on the sandwich. Then he moves to take his phone. “Maybe I should ask Jules if she’s doing okay…” Ren laughs and takes Syo’s phone. “Nice try, Ochibi-chan, but you guys agreed to not contact and see each other before she‘s walking down the aisle to you!” Syo blushes. “Y-yeah, I know! It’s just...weird without the usual good morning texts and all...”, he mumbles. The others let out a laugh. “These two really can’t live without each other.”, says Cecil. “It’s so adorable!!”, squeals Natsuki. The shorter blonde’s blush deepens. “H-hey now! Stop teasing, guys!” Ren puts his arm around Syo’s shoulders. “Seriously though, we’re so happy for you both. Jules and you are the definition of soulmates and we all are beyond excited to celebrate this important day with you.” Syo bashfully runs his fingers through his hair but has a big smile on his face. “Thank you, guys! I can’t imagine not having you all here with us.” All of them smile warmly. Otoya chuckles. “Man, I’m hungry.” Masato nods behind the camera. “Yeah, let’s eat before it’s time for the ceremony.” Syo waves at the camera. “Thanks for joining us. See ya later!” “See ya!”
[The recording stops]
April 8, 2021 at 9:50 AM
[The recording starts]
“Hello, again to another video ‘diary’ entry! It’s Nanami!”, says the energetic voice behind the camera. “This is the location of the ceremony!”
[The camera view goes around the venue]
There is a lot of green, it’s an outdoor wedding, a white path, and cherry blossoms all around, completing the spring wedding theme with their beauty. In the first row of the white chairs, on the other side of Nanami, sits Quartet Night.
[The camera zooms in a little more]
The four men wave at the camera with Reiji being the most enthusiastic about it. Shining is only one row behind them and looks like he’s about to cry from happiness. Beside him are Ryuya, who’s facepalming at Shining’s behavior, and Ringo who just laughs and says something to his teaching partner.
[The view swings over to the front]
There is Syo speaking with Kaoru, his Best Man. The rest of STARISH are nearby, as well.
[The camera gets closer to the blonde twins]
“Hey, Syo-kun! Are you ready for the big moment?”, asks Nanami. Syo nods. “Yeah! I got the message that she’s here! The ceremony should start pretty soon.” Syo smiles a little. “Hey, Nanami? How does Jules look in her dress?” The redhead chuckles. “I’m sorry, Syo-kun. It’s a secret.” “Not even a little hint?” “Nope!” Kaoru lets out a laugh. “Give it up, Nii-san. Besides, you’re going to see her soon!” Syo plays with his suit’s sleeve. “Yeah, yeah. You’re right.” Suddenly, Natsuki runs over to them. “Message from Jules! She’s on her way! 2 minutes!” The group nods. Everybody is taking their seats or positions. Syo takes a deep breath. “Okay, let’s do this!”, he says. „You got this, Syo-kun!“, answers Nanami.
[The view gets really shaky for a moment]
„Alright! The ceremony is about to start.“
[The recording ends]
April 8, 2021 at 10:00 AM
[The recording starts]
Shortly after the camera turns on does music start playing, signaling the arrival of the bride. It’s a very familiar song to everyone. The instrumental version of “Hatsukoi wo Mata Hajimeyou”, requested by Jules and self-proclaimed „couple song“ by the wedding pair. And there she comes. The bride in her wedding gown getting walked down the little path by her father-in-law. The dress is a kimono-inspired blush pink dress with sakura embroidery. Absolutely beautiful. Syo’s eyes start to shine as he sees Jules. His smile is bigger than anyone has ever seen. The brunette’s smile is just as bright. Both of them have tears in their eyes, which could fall any second. The young idol meets his bride and dad halfway down the path. He gives Jules a quick peck on the cheek and turns to his dad to thank him. They exchange a few words and a pat on the shoulder before his dad “gives” Jules over to him. Syo holds out his hand to her. “Shall we, my gorgeous princess?” The blue-eyed girl blushes but takes it without hesitation. „Absolutely, my handsome prince.” Now it is Syo who blushes. Both of them walk together, hand in hand, to the front where the officiant awaits.
[A little while later]
“Now it’s time for the wedding vows.”, the officiant announces. Jules, nervously, goes first.
“My Prince.”, she starts. “There is so much to say and believe me when I say that I wrote down 10 pages full of stuff I wanted to say but I keep it short. I love you. And with every single day that passes, I do more. You are the light in my life that keeps me going, even through the darkest moments. I can always count on you to make me laugh, since literally the moment we’ve met all these years ago. The day you confessed to me feels like it was just yesterday because time with you is flying by so fast. You make me so happy. This may be cliche but you are my best friend who understands me fully and where I don’t have to hide who I am. I know we can manage anything that life throws at us. I can’t wait to explore our life together beside you as your wife! I promise to always love and honor you till the day I die. I love you so much, Syo...”
Syo‘s eyes water again and he leans forward to kiss Jules‘ forehead. „I love you too.“ He squeezes her hands before starting his own vow.
„Jules. My princess. Let me start this off by saying that you’re the best thing that life has ever given me. I don’t know what I did to deserve someone as sweet and supportive as you. You’re definitely thinking now that you’re not worthy to be thought of like that but it’s true. You are everything to me. I will always protect you and remind you every day that you’re absolutely amazing. I love you with my whole being. The fact that you didn’t leave me due to my job but instead always encourage and support me through and through makes me so incredibly thankful to have you in my life. Our ‚Prince of Fighting’ marathons are also always so much fun. I treasure these moments deeply in my heart. I promise, no, I swear, as your prince, that I will always come back home to you, no matter how long we‘re apart and that I‘ll always love and adore you. I love you, princess.“
Tears are running down Jules’ cheeks, which Syo gently wipes away with his thumbs under her glasses. Then he turns his head away to wipe his own teary eyes. The wedding guests are very quiet, seemingly moved by the couple’s vows. After a short pause is it finally time. The officiant turns to Syo first.
“Do you, Syo Kurusu, take Jules Hawthorne to be your lawfully wedded wife? Do you promise to love her, honor her, respect her, and be faithful to her, through anything life may bring, for as long as you both shall live?”
“I do!”, answers Syo confidently.
“Do you, Jules Hawthorne, take Syo Kurusu to be your lawfully wedded husband? Do you promise to love him, honor him, respect him, and be faithful to him, through anything life may bring, for as long as you both shall live?”
“Yes, I do!”, answers Jules in her soft voice.
The officiant nods at the now married couple. “I hereby happily pronounce you husband and wife! You may now kiss your princess.” Syo turns to Jules with a look full of love. He softly cups her cheeks, asking for permission, which she gives through a slight nod. Then he leans in for a sweet kiss, sealing their promise for eternity. Applause is rising around them as they gently lean their foreheads against each other’s. The couple turn their heads and catch the camera’s view. They chuckle and wave, showing off their rings with excitement. Truly an adorable sight.

[The recording starts]
“Good afternoon, it’s Tokiya this time. We’re at the reception and waiting for the happy couple to arrive.” A sudden voice interrupts. It’s Cecil. “Hey, when will Syo and Jules arrive?” “Pretty soon, I’m sure.”, answers Ren instead. “I can’t wait~!”, exclaims Natsuki. “Shhh! I think they’re coming!”, says Otoya excitedly. Shining steps forward with a microphone in his hand.
[The camera zooms in on Shining]
“Hello, everyone! I have the great honor today to introduce the newly married couple! Let’s welcome them with a round of applause! Here are Mr. and Mrs. Syo and Jules Kurusu!!!” A big thunder of applause erupts. The married couple comes in, hand in hand, and just as happy as at the ceremony. Syo takes the microphone and addresses the crowd.
“Good afternoon! Thank you so much for coming and celebrating this important milestone with us. It really means a lot! This is the plan for the afternoon and evening. After the reception my wife and I have our first dance.” Jules’ shyness kicks in, which her blush gives away. The blonde gives her an encouraging smile and puts an arm around her. The blue-eyed girl smiles back at her husband. Syo turns back to the guests. “And after that, the buffet and bar are open, so eat and drink to your heart’s content. There are some surprises planned during the wedding party, as well. We really hope you continue to have a lot of fun today! Again, thank you all for coming!” Everyone raises their glasses:
“TO SYO AND JULES!”

Congratulations on your followers milestone 😊🌸 then can I request a Nobunaga for hot god... Thank you
So this kind of got out of hand haha
Warnings: Female!Reader, mild family conflict, possible inaccuracyWord count: 2,435Tagged:#hanayomeTranslations and important notes:
Tengu (lit. heavenly dog) are Japanese legendary creatures that are regarded as either youkai (supernatural beings) or kami (gods). This fic treats Tengu as the latter.
Obi, as you may already know, is the ‘belt’ of the kimono.
Shinsoku means abbot/head priest of an abbey or temple.
Miko refers to a priestess.
Geta are traditional wooden clogs that resemble flip-flops.
Oshiroi is the name of the white powder used as makeup.
Aneue is a highly formal and archaic way of addressing one’s elder sister.
FYI, Kiku means ‘chrysanthemum’.
Enjoy!
Part 2 Part 3
1.
Sounds of hurried footsteps echo through the wooden flooring of the temple, and along with them, the chatterings of people. They come for one second, allowing the listener to grasp only a few words, before ultimately becoming an auditory blur as they grow further away. You are in a room tucked away in one corner of the temple, sewing the last few stitches that would make the final adjustments to a white over-robe.
Once the moon is at her highest tonight, your little sister is to become a bride. Her procession begins in no more than two hours.
A couple other elderly priestesses are by her side, gently folding and twisting her hair up into an intricate hairstyle reserved only for those about to marry with delicate ornamental hairpins. Another is fixing up the wataboshi, the bridal hood that will hide Kiku’s face from all eyes except her groom’s.
Never have you heard silence so loud that even the hustle and bustle in the hallways feel like a great distance away. The air is cold and tense, a complete antithesis of wedding preparation. Faces are grim and eyes are tearful—if only she were wearing black, you’d think this was a funeral instead.
Young Kiku’s beautiful ebony eyes are narrowed in a mix of emotions even as one of the priestesses tucks a fan into her obi, the symbol for a happy future. Despite her general optimism, you know that she feels more like an item to be sold than a bride.
Because it truly was a transaction.
——————————
Your family is a long line of clerical servants of the god Tengu who rules over war and prosperity. (You’ve always disliked that dichotomy.) The men and women of your family devote their whole lives as priests and priestesses with the privilege to communicate with him in his dwelling—a lone temple on top of the mountain Kurama that towers over your village. Seiiki—‘sanctuary’, they call it.
It has been decreed since the days of old that once a year, each autumn solstice, on the day of the full moon, the abbot would climb the perilous steps up the mountain to speak to the god Tengu. Tonight is that of a full moon, and so your father, the abbot, made the ascent. The news he delivered was unusual, but at that time you know little of how bitter it would all turn out.
“The god Tengu demands a young virgin as his bride in exchange for the earth’s eternal yield. At sundown, a fiery arrow shall descend from the sky and pierce the roof of the house in which this virgin dwells. When night falls, she will climb up to the peak of Mount Kurama to meet her groom and dwell with him in the Seiiki forever.”
A girl for lifelong milk and honey, when each previous year the god Tengu would demand only a portion of the harvest he had already given. Of course, the atypicality wasn’t lost to the people, but they faithfully waited until sundown. The gods were never the most sympathetical beings anyway, and the people felt lucky that Tengu’s demands were not as outlandish as the others.
You were among the people at the temple grounds when the promised arrow indeed descended, appearing as a faraway white dot floating against the violet-pink sky. Before the last of the sun’s rays faded it flew towards the village, but what you didn’t expect was for those pale flames to pierce the very roof you were under.
Tied on its stem is a paper with ‘marriage’ written on it.
——————————
If she was composed during her dressing, now Kiku is anything but. In your arms she sobs, a pure white mess, smearing your miko uniform with the red face paint around her eyes. When she looks up at you, shaking her head in disdain, it looks as though she cried blood.
“I don’t want to go,” she croaks, “I don’t want to leave you.”
“And I don’t want you to leave,” you reply.
There are no tears in your eyes, for this predicament seems too fatal, too fast, like a bad dream. You wish it were a dream. You don’t tell your little sister you wish it were you—because she has her whole life ahead of her and because it is probably easier for your family to let you go.
The two of you are the abbot’s dear children, yes, but you are the eldest daughter instead of the eldest son—one that can continue his name. Even in your adulthood your father still looks at you the same way, like you’re something he didn’t ask for. It’s different for Kiku because Kiku is different. “She is the temperate lake to your forest fire.” That was what your father once said to you. Through it all, your mother is ultimately the one that loved you unconditionally, but behind her gentle smile, she hides the same sadness from your father’s disappointment for not having a son.
If you were to tell the truth, you’d rather be the god Tengu’s bride than stay here, but alas, he demands a young bride. Moreover, your father sees this as an absolute honor for Kiku to be chosen, though eventually you know he’ll grow bitter from only having your mediocrity left in his house.
The sliding door opens. It’s your father and mother.
“Procession will begin soon.”
“I need to fix her rouge,” you say without looking at him, “and then she’ll have to wear her wataboshi.” You hear a choked sound coming from your mother as she embraces Kiku. You look on somberly, but can’t stop yourself from stealing a glance at your father, who remains unmoving. You’ve never seen him look that sad before.
A shuffle of footsteps and you see the silhouette of a monk beyond the screen door—he’s considerate enough not to stand where your sister can be seen, at least.
“Shinsoku-sama, the procession is ready.”
The moon is at its biggest and brightest, looking as though she is peering down to watch the events unfolding under her soft light. You’ve moved to the edge of the temple grounds with your parents and the clerics. The procession is only to be done by the betrothed and their attendants, and with the absence of the groom, Kiku was left to walk with only two other lesser miko and four monks to carry the traditional harvest offering. The click-clack of their geta is loud against the masonry floor, it being the only sound other than the buzzing crickets. There are no more exchanged words or touches allowed in this holy rite—the only thing Kiku can spare you and your family is a meaningful look before she takes her first step beyond the red gate, lantern in hand to guide her through the dark of the night.
She makes her way up, up, following the curves of the stone steps, and not long after, all you can see is the flickering light of lanterns like gold slowly pumping through a vein. The bamboo forests surrounding the stairs sway left and right in the night wind, and it reminds you of a worried man rocking on his feet. The stairs twist and turn in a serpent-like manner, and the trees, taller and thicker, conceal their light, infrequently at first, but more and more as they venture higher before eventually they disappear out of sight.
Next to you, your mother is the first to break, letting out a long breath and a sob. You reach for her hand. When her cold fingers wrap around yours, you allow yourself to cry.
——————————
It is the fourth hour after Kiku stepped out the red gate, and the attendants who went with her haven’t returned. Rain started to pour not too long ago, and though it isn’t heavy, it’s enough to cause concern. You are in a prayer room with the other miko, joining them in their quiet chants. Your mother’s body and mind are too exhausted to participate, and it’s not like she can pray to a god that chose to take her daughter away forever.
Truth be told, you feel the same, as the prayer beads on your palm feel much heavier than they should. The chants lose their meaning, replaced only by questions only the god Tengu can answer. You realize the futility of the situation and contemplate whether you should just run up those stairs and confront him yourself.
You’re picturing it with your eyes closed. The flight of stairs might be steep and many, and it might be dangerous going up there in the rain, but you’d be fueled with enough rage to overcome them. What happens there, you’d worry about later—the holy grounds are supposed to be accessible only to the abbot. Should the sacred boundary be created by a spell, you could always try to break it. Once the barrier is broken, you’d be able to come face-to-face with the god Tengu.
You realize you don’t know what he really looks like, but it hardly matters. What then? Would you attempt to kill him for taking your sister away? No, that’s not really what you want. What do you really want?
Fatigue makes it easier for your consciousness to escape you, and unbeknownst to you, your wandering thoughts lull you into the beginnings of slumber. Your prayer beads are now stationary, and your chants are reduced into incomprehensible murmurs before they stop completely.
Mind clouded with fog, the only thing you could see in your head is the lantern light flickering as it makes its way up the stairs. Golden light, twisting and turning. The wind’s howl in your ear, deafening. The orange leaves’ crackle as they are dragged across stone floors by the gale.
…lady…
The god Tengu’s arrow floats again in your dream as if waiting for its time to strike. Your eyebrows knit in anticipation, your eyes dare not look away.
…Milady…
The flames on the arrow’s tail seem to flicker before it grows stronger, its shape becoming larger and larger. In the blink of an eye, it flies, but this time not towards the roof of the temple.
It’s coming towards you.
“Milady!”
Just as the arrow pierces through your heart, you open your eyes with a pained gasp, but the trickle of cold sweat on your nape and your feverish breath makes you feel as though you’re still trapped in a dream. Some of the elder priestesses crowd around you, one of them holding your trembling hand as she places her own against your forehead.
“You were shaking,” she says, eyes worriedly darting around to inspect your face, “Milady, you’re very warm.”
You’re still trying to gain your bearings when you hear a pair of footsteps dash towards the room. One second later, the screen doors open with a loud bang, revealing a young miko drenched from the rain—you vaguely remember her as one of Kiku’s company. Her eyes search the room before falling on you, and the look on her damp face turns into that of bewildered trepidation. She calls your name once and kneels in front of you, gently tugging at your arm to get you to stand.
“It’s Lady Kiku, she—when we got up there, we—I’m sorry, it’d be better for her to tell you in person. Please come with me. She’s downstairs, she—we need you.”
Equally, if not more confused than the miko, you force your numb legs to carry you out of the room and down the steps with her help. The cold of her clothes against your warm skin wakes you up a little. She guides you to the main hall, her footsteps leaving trails of water droplets as she goes. Once the door slides open, you’re equal parts baffled and relieved to see your little sister. The floor around her is littered with discarded hairpins and baskets of fine products, reduced into a dirty mess. She is weeping, her face buried in her hands. You unlatch yourself from the miko’s arm to rush to Kiku’s side, your arm around her.
“What happened?”
“He…” she begins, looking up at you with wet eyes. She looks like a wreck, the oshiroi powder washed out from her face and her hair in a disheveled state. “W-We went into the Seiiki and everything seems fine, but then he—”
It is then your father interrupts, his voice booming in the cold, dim room.
“It isn’t Kiku the god Tengu wants.”
“—he saw my face as we entered, it was a huge room and we weren’t even face-to-face! I don’t know how, but he saw me, and a gust of strong wind blew, he… he told me that I wasn’t the one. And then he said your name. He told me to bring you. Aneue, he… he wants you.”
Your heart sinks, and it clenches as if responding to a piercing wound. One that’s left by a flaming arrow.
Kiku then proceeds to gather her now loose hair and moved it across one shoulder, revealing her bare neck to you.
You almost can’t believe your eyes—a crimson string blooms from the side of her throat, and when you reach out to touch it with a finger, it doesn’t smear or fade, as if it’s permanently embedded within her skin. As if she was marked. Stepping closer to see it, you realize that it is alive, its two ends moving ever so slowly around her. It would be a complete circle once it meets on the other side of her neck.
“You have until sunrise to see him,” your mother finally speaks, her face a tired blank canvas. Her daughter was returned, only for the other to be taken away. “We concluded that this string will make one complete round by then. He didn’t tell Kiku what would happen if the ends meet.”
“It’s a timekeeper enchantment,” your father supplies, “to make sure you make the ascent.”
Every bit of composure in you snaps just then and you make for the door as fast as you can. Kiku captures your wrist just in time, a concerned look on her face. She gently places something into your open palm and you take it, inspecting it.
It’s a crumpled up piece of paper with the kanji ‘marriage’ on it. The look on Kiku’s face tells you not to question how that item came to her possession.
Your mouth runs dry. It seems like Kiku also has trouble speaking because her voice cracks as she says this to you:
“Aneue, he wants to see you in red.”

*black lace, kimono & cat ears*
hello, hello! is this thing still on? haha! sorry, didn't mean to copy our former (& much-missed) president, ha! it's crazy that i haven't blogged in 3 weeks, but i've been busier than usual with a lot of traveling. all fun stuff, but still pretty hectic :)
first off, i got to spend a quick weekend in denver for a wedding. i had never been to the mile-high city before, so i have to say i really enjoyed my time breathing in the fresh, cool mountain air & surrounded by the gorgeous mountain views :) i'll hopefully have up soon a separate post of just the city in general, but on to the OOTD :)
you could probably already guess by my outfit that the wedding i attended was a *little* unconventional. in fact, the bride wore red & black & it was the groom who wore all white! needless to say, amongst the witches, warlocks & other fantastical beings, i felt perfectly comfortable in all black & my black lace cat ears hardly batted an eye (of newt), haha!
instead of just wearing the cat ears the regular ol' boring way, i made little devil horn hair buns to sit behind the ears. i just wanted a little more dimension to my hairstyle. i really liked the look very much sans ears, so maybe that will be my new hairstyle for the spring/summer seasons :) i've worn this black lace dress to a wedding before & this kimono i've worn to probably *half* the weddings i've attended, haha! hey, when a look works, it works :) my new to wear items are my nude suede heels & the beautiful embroidered double crane purse that i've been waiting for *just* such an occasion to debut. it was a really fun, yet super quick weekend trip & i'm still in FL right now, but hopefully will get back on a regular blogging schedule soon :)
